Chitosan-derived hydrothermally carbonized materials and its applications: A review of recent literature

Recent advancements and perspectives on processable natural biopolymers: Cellulose, chitosan, eggshell membrane, and silk fibroin

With the rapid development of the global economy and the continuous consumption of fossil resources, sustainable and biodegradable natural biomass has garnered extensive attention as a promising substitute for synthetic polymers. Due to their hierarchical and nanoscale structures, natural biopolymers exhibit remarkable mechanical properties, along with excellent innate biocompatibility and biodegradability, demonstrating significant potential in various application scenarios. Among these biopolymers, proteins and polysaccharides are the most commonly studied due to their low cost, abundance, and ease of use. However, the direct processing/conversion of proteins and polysaccharides into their final products has been a long-standing challenge due to their natural morphology and compositions. In this review, we emphasize the importance of processing natural biopolymers into high-value-added products through sustainable and cost-effective methods. We begin with the extraction of four types of natural biopolymers: cellulose, chitosan, eggshell membrane, and silk fibroin. The processing and post-functionalization strategies for these natural biopolymers are then highlighted. Alongside their unique structures, the versatile potential applications of these processable natural biopolymers in biomedical engineering, biosensors, environmental engineering, and energy applications are illustrated. Finally, we provide a summary and future outlook on processable natural biopolymers, underscoring the significance of converting natural biopolymers into valuable biomaterial platforms.

Effective removal of Rhodamine B using the hydrothermal carbonization and citric acid modification of furfural industrial processing waste

In this study, the removal of RhB from water by furfural residue (FR) biochar was prepared by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and citric acid (CA) modification and named this biochar as CHFR (C refers to citric acid, H refers to hydrothermal carbonization and FR is furfural residue). The CHFR were characterized by SEM, FT-IR and XPS, and CHFR was investigated by the effects of initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, and contact time on the removal of RhB, and the experimental data were analyzed using the adsorption isotherm models, the adsorption kinetic models and thermodynamics, et al. The results showed that CHFR has strong adsorption performance, and the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of RhB was 39.46 mg·g-1 under the reaction conditions of pH3, the dosage of 1.5 g·L-1, and 120 min contact time, with a removal efficiency close to 100%. the adsorption of RhB by CHFR is spontaneous and endothermic, which is consistent with the Freundlich adsorption, and the isotherm model fits well with the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption rate could still be as high as 92.74% after five regenerations, therefore, CHFR is an environmentally friendly and efficient adsorbent with excellent adsorption regeneration performance.

A green, efficient and stable platform based on hyperbranched quaternized hydrothermal magnetic chitosan nanospheres integrated cytomembranes for screening drug candidates from natural products

Compared with traditional tedious organic solvent-assisted separation process in natural medicinal chemistry, cytomembrane (CM) fishing technique became a more appealing and greener choice for screening bioactive components from natural products. However, its large-scale practical value was greatly weakened by the easy fall-off of CMs from magnetic supports, rooted in the instability of common Fe3O4 particles and their insufficient interaction with CMs. In this research, a new green biostable platform was developed for drug screening through the integration of hyperbranched quaternized hydrothermal magnetic carbon spheres (HQ-HMCSs) and CMs. The positive-charged HQ-HMCSs were constructed by chitosan-based hydrothermal carbonization onto Fe3O4 nanospheres and subsequent aqueous hyperbranching quaternization with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether and methylamine. The strong interaction between HQ-HMCSs and CMs was formed via electrostatic attraction of HQ-HMCSs to negative-charged CMs and covalent linkage derived from the epoxy-amine addition reactions. The chemically stable HMCSs and its integration with CMs contributed to dramatically higher stability and recyclability of bionic nanocomposites. With the fishing of osteoblast CMs integrated HQ-HMCSs, two novel potential anti-osteoporosis compounds, narcissoside and beta-ionone, were discovered from Hippophae rhamnoides L. Enhanced osteoblast proliferation, alkaline phosphatase, and mineralization levels proved their positive osteogenesis effects. Preliminary pharmacological investigation demonstrated their potential action on membrane proteins of estrogen receptor alpha and insulin-like growth factor 1. Furthermore, beta-ionone showed apparent therapeutic effects on osteogenic lesions in zebrafish. These results provide a green, stable, cost-efficient, and reliable access to rapid discovery of drug leads, which verifiably benefits the design of nanocarbon-based biocomposites with increasingly advanced functionality.

Fabrication of Ru loaded MgB2 with guar gum hybrid for photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet

Today, dyes/pigment-based materials are confronting a serious issue in harming marine ecology. Annihilate these serious water pollutants using photoactive 2D nanohybrid catalysts showed promising comparativeness over available photocatalysts. In the present work, a facile route to decorate Ruthenium (Ru) on 2D MgB2 flower-like nanostructures was developed via ecofriendly guar gum biopolymer substantial template (MgB2/GG@Ru NFS) and its photocatalytic performance was reported. Synthesis of MgB2@Ru, MgB2/GG@Ru NFS and commercial MgB2, was studied by FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, AFM, TEM, UV-vis spectra, and XPS analysis. From the results, the MgB2/GG@Ru NFS exhibited a superior photocatalytic performance (99.7 %) than its precursors MgB2@Ru (79.7 %), and MgB2 (53.7 %), with the degradation efficiency of the crystal violet (CV) within 100 min under visible light irradiation. The proposed photo-catalyst MgB2/GG@Ru NFS showed negligible loss of photocatalytic activity even after five successive cycles, revealing its reusability and enhanced stability due to the network structure. The photocatalytic mechanism for MgB2/GG@Ru NFS was evaluated by trapping experiment of active species, verifying that superoxide (O2-) and electron (e-) contributed significant role in the dye degradation.

Preparation of carbon-rich material from Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide in deep eutectic system

A carbon-rich material (DESysChar) was prepared from polysaccharide within a deep eutectic system (DESys) containing oxalic acid, and systematically characterized using various analytical techniques. The investigation of reaction mechanism revealed concurrent dehydration and etherification processes. This study commenced with the extraction of plant polysaccharide using the DESys-based mechanochemical extraction method from Dendrobium officinale. Subsequently, the DESys method was used to carbonize the extracted Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide and produce DESysChar. DESysChar was then used for the adsorption and determination of pollutants in water. This study represents a significant advancement in eco-friendly material synthesis, enabling the low-temperature (120 °C) carbonization of plant-derived polysaccharides, thereby reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. The effective adsorption of methylene blue by DESysChar underscores its potential in environmental remediation. This study presents a more responsible and efficient approach to polysaccharide extraction and carbonization, addressing environmental concerns. Embracing the 4S workflow (involving Sustainable raw materials converted into Sustainable degradable products, by using Sustainable technology throughout the process to create a Sustainable environment) promotes sustainability in material development, laying the foundation for future eco-friendly practices in various industries. In summary, this study propels sustainable polysaccharide development for widespread use.

Nitrogen-Doped Magnetic-Dielectric-Carbon Aerogel for High-Efficiency Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Carbon-based aerogels derived from biomass chitosan are encountering a flourishing moment in electromagnetic protection on account of lightweight, controllable fabrication and versatility. Nevertheless, developing a facile construction method of component design with carbon-based aerogels for high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) materials with a broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) and strong absorption yet hits some snags. Herein, the nitrogen-doped magnetic-dielectric-carbon aerogel was obtained via ice template method followed by carbonization treatment, homogeneous and abundant nickel (Ni) and manganese oxide (MnO) particles in situ grew on the carbon aerogels. Thanks to the optimization of impedance matching of dielectric/magnetic components to carbon aerogels, the nitrogen-doped magnetic-dielectric-carbon aerogel (Ni/MnO-CA) suggests a praiseworthy EWA performance, with an ultra-wide EAB of 7.36 GHz and a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of - 64.09 dB, while achieving a specific reflection loss of - 253.32 dB mm-1. Furthermore, the aerogel reveals excellent radar stealth, infrared stealth, and thermal management capabilities. Hence, the high-performance, easy fabricated and multifunctional nickel/manganese oxide/carbon aerogels have broad application aspects for electromagnetic protection, electronic devices and aerospace.

High Mass-Loading Biomass-Based Porous Carbon Electrodes for Supercapacitors: Review and Perspectives

Biomass-based porous carbon (BPC) with renewability and flexible nano/microstructure tunability has attracted increasing attention as efficient and cheap electrode materials for supercapacitors. To meet commercial needs, high mass-loading electrodes with high areal capacitance are preferred when designing supercapacitors. The increased mass percentage of active materials can effectively improve the energy density of supercapacitors. However, as the thickness of the electrode increases, it will face the following challenges including severely blocked ion transport channels, poor charging dynamics, poor electrode structural stability, and complex preparation processes. A bridge between theoretical research and practical applications of BPC electrodes for supercapacitors needs to be established. In this review, the advances of high mass-loading BPC electrodes for supercapacitors are summarized based on different biomass precursors. The key performance evaluation parameters of the high mass-loading electrodes are analyzed, and the performance influencing factors are systematically discussed, including specific surface area, pore structure, electrical conductivity, and surface functional groups. Subsequently, the promising optimization strategies for high mass-loading electrodes are summarized, including the structure regulation of electrode materials and the optimization of other supercapacitor components. Finally, the major challenges and opportunities of high mass-loading BPC electrodes in the future are discussed and outlined.

TiO2-Modified Montmorillonite-Supported Porous Carbon-Immobilized Pd Species Nanocomposite as an Efficient Catalyst for Sonogashira Reactions

In this study, a combination of the porous carbon (PCN), montmorillonite (MMT), and TiO₂ was synthesized into a composite immobilized Pd metal catalyst (TiO₂-MMT/PCN@Pd) with effective synergism improvements in catalytic performance. The successful TiO₂-pillaring modification for MMT, derivation of carbon from the biopolymer of chitosan, and immobilization of Pd species for the prepared TiO₂-MMT/PCN@Pd⁰ nanocomposites were confirmed using a combined characterization with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, high-resolution transition electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that the combination of PCN, MMT, and TiO₂ as a composite support for the stabilization of the Pd catalysts could synergistically improve the adsorption and catalytic properties. The resultant TiO₂-MMT₈₀/PCN₂₀@Pd⁰ showed a high surface area of 108.9 m²/g. Furthermore, it exhibited moderate to excellent activity (59-99% yield) and high stability (recyclable 19 times) in the liquid-solid catalytic reactions, such as the Sonogashira reactions of aryl halides (I, Br) with terminal alkynes in organic solutions. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) characterization sensitively detected the development of sub-nanoscale microdefects in the catalyst after long-term recycling service. This study provided direct evidence for the formation of some larger-sized microdefects during sequential recycling, which would act as leaching channels for loaded molecules, including active Pd species.

Chitosan-Based Carbon Dots with Applied Aspects: New Frontiers of International Interest in a Material of Marine Origin

Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted significant research attention worldwide due to their unique properties and advantageous attributes, such as superior optical properties, biocompatibility, easy surface functionalization, and more. Moreover, biomass-derived CDs have attracted much attention because of their additional advantages related to more environmentally friendly and lower-cost synthesis. In this respect, chitosan has been recently explored for the preparation of CDs, which in comparison to other natural precursors exhibited additional advantages. Beyond the benefits related to the eco-friendly and abundant nature of chitosan, using it as a nanomaterial precursor offers additional benefits in terms of structure, morphology, and dopant elements. Furthermore, the high content of nitrogen in chitosan allows it to be used as a single carbon and nitrogen precursor for the preparation of N-doped CDs, significantly improving their fluorescent properties and, therefore, their performances. This review addresses the most recent advances in chitosan-based CDs with a special focus on synthesis methods, enhanced properties, and their applications in different fields, including biomedicine, the environment, and food packaging. Finally, this work also addresses the key challenges to be overcome to propose future perspectives and research to unlock their great potential for practical applications.

Carbonized π-conjugated polymer-coated porous silica: preparation and evaluating its extraction ability for berberine

In view of the limitations of existing berberine solid-phase extraction adsorbents, this paper proposes a novel carbonized π-conjugated polymer-coated porous silica (SiO₂@C-π-CP) adsorbent with simple process and low cost for efficient extraction of berberine by multiple interactions. Characterization methods, including Brunner-Emmet-Teller measurement, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy techniques, were used to verify the successful modification of carbonized π-conjugated polymer on the surface of porous silica. The berberine was selected as target molecule, and the adsorption mechanism and process were investigated through adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and thermodynamic studies. The fitting results show that the adsorption of berberine by SiO₂@C-π-CP well conforms to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. By optimizing the main SPE parameters, the SPE method based on SiO₂@C-π-CP was developed. Excellent results were obtained, including low limit of detection (0.75 ng mL^-1) and limit of quantification (2 ng mL^-1), wide linearity (2-13,000 ng mL^-1), and satisfactory relative standard deviations (RSD) of inter-day (1.5%) and intra-day (6.2%). Finally, the SiO₂@C-π-CP also has been successfully used to the enrichment of berberine in real urine samples. This research makes clear that SiO₂@C-π-CP has outstanding potential for trace enrichment of berberine alkaloids.

Biopolymers-Derived Materials for Supercapacitors: Recent Trends, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Supercapacitors may be able to store more energy while maintaining fast charging times; however, they need low-cost and sophisticated electrode materials. Developing innovative and effective carbon-based electrode materials from naturally occurring chemical components is thus critical for supercapacitor development. In this context, biopolymer-derived porous carbon electrode materials for energy storage applications have gained considerable momentum due to their wide accessibility, high porosity, cost-effectiveness, low weight, biodegradability, and environmental friendliness. Moreover, the carbon structures derived from biopolymeric materials possess unique compositional, morphological, and electrochemical properties. This review aims to emphasize (i) the comprehensive concepts of biopolymers and supercapacitors to approach smart carbon-based materials for supercapacitors, (ii) synthesis strategies for biopolymer derived nanostructured carbons, (iii) recent advancements in biopolymer derived nanostructured carbons for supercapacitors, and (iv) challenges and future prospects from the viewpoint of green chemistry-based energy storage. This study is likely to be useful to the scientific community interested in the design of low-cost, efficient, and green electrode materials for supercapacitors as well as various types of electrocatalysis for energy production.

Porous chitosan-based nanocomposites containing gold nanoparticles. Increasing the catalytic performance through film porosity

The preparation of porous and non-porous chitosan thin-films containing gold nanoparticles was carried out, aiming to evaluate the effect of porosity on their catalytic response using the p-nitrophenol reduction as model reaction. To achieve this, both types of samples were decorated with gold nanoparticles having similar characteristics in terms of amount, size and shape, which were synthesized following a two-step adsorption-reduction process. The results demonstrated that the presence of porosity generates a considerable enhancement of the catalytic property. This behavior is reflected in higher kinetic constant and conversion values, along with a better recyclability after consecutive cycles. The inclusion of porosity in nanocomposites afforded k_obs values 7.5 times higher than the non-porous material, as well as conversion values as high as 80 % in <20 min. On the other hand, as an additional experiment, a porous sample prepared with half the amount of gold also exhibited a better performance than the non-porous catalyst, revealing that the porosity allowed to decrease the amount of catalytic metal used and still exhibiting k_obs values 5.9 times higher than the non-porous specimen. These studies demonstrate that there is an important synergistic support-nanostructure relationship, which strongly influences the performance of the nanomaterial.

PLGA Nanospheres as Delivery Platforms for Eimeria mitis 1a Protein: A Novel Strategy to Improve Specific Immunity

The infections of chicken coccidiosis impact the welfare of chickens and the economical production of poultry. Eimeria mitis is ubiquitous in chicken coccidiosis, and E. mitis infection can significantly affect the productivity of birds. Up to now, few efficient vaccines against E. mitis have been reported, whereas the recombinant subunit vaccines delivered by nanomaterials may elicit an encouraging outcome. Thus, in this study, we chose E. mitis 1a (Em1a) protein as the candidate antigen to generate Em1a preparations. The recombinant Em1a (rEm1a) protein was encapsulated with poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) and chitosan (CS) nanospheres. The physical characterization of the rEm1a-PLGA and rEm1a-CS nanospheres was investigated, and the resulting nanospheres were proven to be nontoxic. The protective efficacy of rEm1a-PLGA and rEm1a-CS preparations was evaluated in E. mitis-challenged birds in comparison with two preparations containing rEm1a antigen emulsified in commercially available adjuvants. ELISA assay, flow cytometry analysis, and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) analysis indicated that vaccination with rEm1a-loaded nanospheres significantly upregulated the secretions of antibodies and cytokines and proportions of CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ T lymphocytes. Compared with the other three preparations, rEm1a-PLGA nanosphere was more effective in improving growth performance and inhibiting oocyst output in feces, indicating that the PLGA nanosphere was associated with optimal protection against E. mitis. Collectively, our results highlighted the advantages of nanovaccine in eliciting protective immunity and may provide a new perspective for developing effective vaccines against chicken coccidiosis.

Preparation of Needleless Electrospinning Polyvinyl Alcohol/Water-Soluble Chitosan Nanofibrous Membranes: Antibacterial Property and Filter Efficiency

Electrospinning is an efficient method of producing nanofibers out of polymers that shows a great potential for the filtration territory. Featuring water-soluble chitosan (WS-CS), a low-pollution process and a self-made needleless machine, PVA/WS-CS nanofibrous membranes were prepared and evaluated for nanofiber diameter, bacteriostatic property, filtration efficiency, pressure drop, and quality factor. Test results indicate that the minimal fiber diameter was 216.58 ± 58.15 nm. Regardless of the WS-CS concentration, all of the PVA/WS-CS nanofibrous membranes attained a high porosity and a high water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), with a pore size of 12.06–22.48 nm. Moreover, the membranes also exhibit bacteriostatic efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, an optimal quality factor of 0.0825 Pa⁻¹, and a filtration efficiency as high as 97.0%, that is 72.5% higher than that of common masks.

Preparation of acylated chitosan with caffeic acid in non-enzymatic and enzymatic systems: Characterization and application in pork preservation

To further improve the performance of chitosan in food processing and preservation, this study investigated the grafting of the caffeic acid onto the chitosan in non-enzymatic and enzymatic systems. Result suggested that the caffeic acid was successfully incorporated into the chitosan in the non-enzymatic system, and the grafting ratio of modified chitosan (CA@CTS-N) was 7.49%. Moreover, lipase had a significant positive effect on the grafting reaction of the chitosan, and the modified chitosan prepared in enzymatic system (CA@CTS-E) obtained a higher grafting ratio, which was 11.82%. In both systems, the carboxyl of the caffeic acid was bonded to the amino of the chitosan and formed carbonyl ammonia. After the introduction of foreign group, many changes occurred in the functional properties of the modified chitosan. First, the water solubility of the chitosan was significantly improved from 0.00285 (native chitosan, CTS) to 0.221 (CA@CTS-N) and 0.774 g/100 mL (CA@CTS-E). The caffeoyl had a significant impact on the emulsifying properties of the chitosan. Compared with those of CTS, the modified chitosan had stronger antioxidation and antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. Finally, the pork treated with the modified chitosan exhibited longer shelf life than that treated with CTS.

Chitosan-based oxygen-doped activated carbon/graphene composite for flexible supercapacitors

Flexible supercapacitors have attracted widespread attention from many researchers as a type of portable energy storage device. As a unique carbon material, graphene has shown great potential in supercapacitor electrodes, mainly due to its large theoretical specific surface area, high conductivity and chemical stability. Therefore, reasonable design of graphene-based hydrogels with low cost, high specific surface area, and excellent mechanical properties is of great significance for flexible and wearable energy storage device applications. Oxygen-doped activated carbon/graphene composite hydrogels have been fabricated using a one-step hydrothermal method. In the hybrid hydrogel, the activated carbon derived from chitosan with high specific surface area and oxygen-containing groups which were introduced by using a facile room-temperature oxidation strategy with HNO₃ are assembled into the framework of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to effectively prevent the restacking of rGO nanosheets and result in high specific surface area and high conductivity of the composite hydrogels, thereby leading to an excellent energy storage performance. The optimal sample displayed a high specific capacitance of 375.7 F g⁻¹ in 1 M H₂SO₄ electrolyte at a current density of 1 A g⁻¹. Furthermore, the assembled flexible supercapacitor showed an ideal cycling stability of 83% after 5000 charge/discharge cycles at 10 A g⁻¹. The facile strategy developed in this work is of significance for the performance improvement of supercapacitor electrode materials.

An activated carbon/graphene hydrogel for supercapacitors was prepared by using chitosan-based activated carbon and graphene oxide via a hydrothermal process.

Mechanical and antibacterial properties of ZnO/chitosan bio-composite films

In the current study, ZnO/chitosan bio-composite films were produced via solution-casting method. Two different ZnO powders, micrometer (d50 ≅ 1.5 μm) and nanometer sized (d50 ≅ 100 nm), were used to investigate the effect of ZnO particle size and concentration (0, 2, and 8% w/w of chitosan) on the mechanical and antibacterial properties of the ZnO/chitosan bio-composite films. The incorporation of the ZnO powders into the chitosan film resulted in an increase in the tensile strength (TS) and a decrease in the elongation at break (EB) values. Mechanical test results revealed that TS and EB properties were considerably affected (p < 0.05) by the concentration and particle size of the ZnO reinforcement. Disc diffusion method demonstrated good antibacterial activities of bio-composite films containing high amount of ZnO (8% w/w of chitosan) against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Bacillus subtilis. The growth-limiting effect of the films was more pronounced for S. aureus and K. pneumoniae. Due to enhanced TS and imparted antibacterial activity of the produced ZnO/chitosan bio-composite films, these materials are promising candidates for applications such as food packaging, wound dressing, and antibacterial coatings for various surfaces.

Recent Advances in Chitin and Chitosan/Graphene-Based Bio-Nanocomposites for Energetic Applications

Herein, we report recent developments in order to explore chitin and chitosan derivatives for energy-related applications. This review summarizes an introduction to common polysaccharides such as cellulose, chitin or chitosan, and their connection with carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), such as bio-nanocomposites. Furthermore, we present their structural analysis followed by the fabrication of graphene-based nanocomposites. In addition, we demonstrate the role of these chitin- and chitosan-derived nanocomposites for energetic applications, including biosensors, batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors and solar cell systems. Finally, current limitations and future application perspectives are entailed as well. This study establishes the impact of chitin- and chitosan-generated nanomaterials for potential, unexplored industrial applications.
