A review on lignin antioxidants: Their sources, isolations, antioxidant activities and various applications

Self-Formation of Lignin Particles Through Melt-Extrusion for Active Biodegradable Food Packaging

This study presents a method for the self-formation of lignin particles within a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix during melt-extrusion, eliminating the need for separation and drying steps typically associated with submicro-size lignin particles. This method effectively mitigates the problem of agglomeration often associated with the drying step. Softwood kraft lignin, guaiacyl lignin (GL-lignin), was dissolved in low-molecular-weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and was introduced into a twin-screw extruder using a liquid feeder. Lignin particles within a particle size range of 200-500 nm were observed in the extrudate of the PLA/PEG/GL-lignin composites. PLA/PEG/GL-lignin composite films were produced through blown film extrusion. These composite films demonstrated superior ultraviolet (UV)-barrier and antioxidant properties compared to neat PLA films, with optical and mechanical characteristics comparable to those of neat PLA. Moreover, migration values of the composite films in various food simulants were below regulatory limits, suggesting their potential for food packaging applications. This self-formation process offers a promising approach for utilizing lignin for PLA applications.

Calcium Hexacyanoferrate Nanozyme Enhances Plant Stress Resistance by Oxidative Stress Alleviation and Heavy Metal Removal

Oxidative damage, exacerbated by the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), profoundly inhibits both crop growth and yield. Herein, a biocompatible nanozyme, calcium hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles (CaHCF NPs), targeting ROS is developed, to mitigate oxidative damage and sequestrate heavy metal ions during plant growth. Uniquely, CaHCF NPs feature multifaced enzyme-like activities, involving superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), glutathione peroxidase, thiol peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase, which enable them to neutralize excessive ROS. Furthermore, CaHCF NPs promote calcium-cadmium exchange process, diminishing the uptake of heavy metals. Importantly, 120 µg mL-1 of CaHCF NPs alleviate the inhibitory effects of hydrogen peroxide and cadmium chloride on Arabidopsis and tomato. The activities of SOD, POD, and CAT increase by 46.2%, 74.4%, and 48.3%, respectively, meanwhile the glutathione level rises by 72.4% in Arabidopsis under cadmium stress. Moreover, CaHCF NPs boost the expression of genes associated with antioxidation, heavy metal detoxification, nutrient transport, and stress resistance. These findings unveil the significant potential of nanoplatforms equipped with nanozymes in alleviating oxidative stress in plants, which not only regulate crop growth but also substantially ameliorate yield and quality, heralding a new era in agricultural nanotechnology.

Preparation and Characterization of Lignin Nanoparticles from Different Plant Sources

This article presents new research on producing lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) using the antisolvent nanoprecipitation method. Acetone (90%) served as the lignin solvent and water (100%) as the antisolvent, using five types of lignins from various sources. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including NMR, GPC, FTIR, TEM, and DLS, were employed to assess both lignin and LNP properties. The antioxidant activity of the LNPs was evaluated as well. The results demonstrated the successful formation of spherical nanoparticles below 100 nm with initial lignin concentrations of 1 and 2%w/v. The study highlighted the crucial role of lignin purity in LNP formation and colloidal stability, noting that residual carbohydrates adversely affect efficiency. This method offers a straightforward, environmentally friendly approach using cost-effective solvents, applicable to diverse lignin sources. The innovation of this study lies in its demonstration of a cost-effective and eco-friendly method to produce stable, nanometric-sized spherical LNPs. These LNPs have significant potential as reinforcement materials due to their reinforcing capability, hydrophilicity, and UV absorption. This work underscores the importance of starting material purity for optimizing the process and achieving the desired nanometric dimensions, marking a pioneering advancement in lignin-based nanomaterials.

Unlocking the potential of phenolated kraft lignin as a versatile feed additive

Lignin, a renewable natural antioxidant and bacteriostat, holds promise as a versatile, cost-effective feed additive. However, traditional industrial lignin faces limitations, including low reactivity, poor uniformity, and unstable properties, necessitating chemical modification. Complex modification methods pose economic and toxicity challenges, so this study adopted a relatively simple alkali-catalyzed phenolization approach, using phenol, catechol, and pyrogallol to modify kraft lignin, and characterized the resulting products using various techniques. Subsequently, their antioxidant, antibacterial, adsorption properties for heavy metal ions and mycotoxins, growth-promoting properties, and antiviral abilities were assessed. The phenolation process led to lignin depolymerization and a notable increase in phenolic hydroxyl content, particularly in pyrogallol-phenolated lignin (Py-L), rising from 3.08 to 4.68 mmol/g. These modified lignins exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity, with over 99 % inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus, and remarkable adsorption capacities for heavy metal ions and mycotoxins. Importantly, Py-L improved the growth performance of mice and reduced influenza mortality. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations elucidated the mechanism behind the enhanced antioxidant properties. This study presents a promising avenue for developing versatile feed additives to address challenges related to animal feed antioxidant supplementation, bacterial control, and growth promotion.

Preparation of high antioxidant nanolignin and its application in cosmetics

Lignin, as a natural polyphenol, displays anti-oxidant activity by trapping and binding free radicals through its free phenolic hydroxyl groups. However, the most accessible form, industrial lignins, generally has low phenolic hydroxyl content, which severely limits their application value and scenarios. Herein, we showed that potassium-glycerate deep eutectic solvent (PG-DES) treatment can be combined with laccase oxidation to afford prepared high antioxidant lignin nanoparticles (HA-LNPs) with notably improved anti-oxidant activities benefiting from both the enhanced phenolic hydroxyl content 170.8 % and reduced average particle size (59.0 nm). At concentrations as low as 60 μg/mL, HA-LNPs showed favorable effects in promoting collagen formation. When HA-LNPs were used as an active ingredient in the anti-aging mask formulation, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity of mask samples containing 0.4 % HA-LNPs reached 37.2 %. The data suggest great promise of HA-LNPs as a natural antioxidant for formulating in anti-aging skin care products.

Improved antioxidant activity of pretreated lignin nanoparticles: Evaluation and self-assembly

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) have gained significant attention for their potential as natural antioxidants. This study investigated the effect of various pretreatment methods on the lignin structure and subsequent antioxidant activity of LNPs. Among four pretreated LNPs, hydrothermal LNPs exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, surpassing unpretreated, acid-pretreated and kraft LNPs, with an impressive efficacy of 91.6%. The relationship between LNPs' structure and antioxidant activity was revealed by 2D heteronuclear singular quantum correlation (1H13C HSQC) and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). 1H13C HSQC suggested the cleavage of β-O-4 ether bonds, as well as a decrease in ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid, which directly influenced the antioxidant activity of LNPs. 31P NMR demonstrated a positive correlation between the total hydroxyl group content and the antioxidant activity. Besides, an isothermal kinetic model for scavenging free radicals was established based on Langmuir kinetic model instead of Freundlich model. Moreover, multilayer LNPs, based on layer-by-layer self-assembly, were prepared and exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity of 95.8%. More importantly, when blended with pure cosmetic cream, the multilayer LNPs maintained antioxidant activity of 86.7%. These finding may promote the practical applications of biomolecules, e.g. lignin additives in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Separation Methods of Phenolic Compounds from Plant Extract as Antioxidant Agents Candidate

In recent years, discovering new drug candidates has become a top priority in research. Natural products have proven to be a promising source for such discoveries as many researchers have successfully isolated bioactive compounds with various activities that show potential as drug candidates. Among these compounds, phenolic compounds have been frequently isolated due to their many biological activities, including their role as antioxidants, making them candidates for treating diseases related to oxidative stress. The isolation method is essential, and researchers have sought to find effective procedures that maximize the purity and yield of bioactive compounds. This review aims to provide information on the isolation or separation methods for phenolic compounds with antioxidant activities using column chromatography, medium-pressure liquid chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, counter-current chromatography, hydrophilic interaction chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography, molecularly imprinted technologies, and high-performance thin layer chromatography. For isolation or purification, the molecularly imprinted technologies represent a more accessible and more efficient procedure because they can be applied directly to the extract to reduce the complicated isolation process. However, it still requires further development and refinement.

Phytochemical Profiling and Biological Activities of Pericarps and Seeds Reveal the Controversy on "Enucleation" or "Nucleus-Retaining" of Cornus officinalis Fruits

The fruits of Cornus officinalis are used not only as a popular health food to tonify the liver and kidney, but also as staple materials to treat dementia and other age-related diseases. The pharmacological function of C. officinalis fruits with or without seeds is controversial for treating some symptoms in a few herbal prescriptions. However, the related metabolite and pharmacological information between its pericarps and seeds are largely deficient. Here, comparative metabolomics analysis between C. officinalis pericarps and seeds were conducted using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry, and therapeutic effects were also evaluated using several in vitro bioactivity arrays (antioxidant activity, α-glucosidase and cholinesterase inhibitory activities, and cell inhibitory properties). A total of 499 secondary metabolites were identified. Thereinto, 77 metabolites were determined as key differential metabolites between C. officinalis pericarps and seeds, and the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway was identified as the most significantly different pathway. Further, 47 metabolites were determined as potential bioactive constituents. In summary, C. officinalis seeds, which demonstrated higher contents in total phenolics, stronger in vitro antioxidant activities, better α-glucosidase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities, and stronger anticancer activities, exhibited considerable potential for food and health fields. This work provided insight into the metabolites and bioactivities of C. officinalis pericarps and seeds, contributing to their precise development and utilization.

Hydrogels based on lignin extracted from cashew apple bagasse and its application in antimicrobial wound dressings

Hydrogels are versatile materials with a three-dimensional network structure that can retain water and release bioactive compounds. They have found applications in various fields, including agriculture, biomaterial synthesis, and pharmaceuticals. Incorporating natural antimicrobial compounds into hydrogels is a promising approach to developing non-toxic biomedical materials, particularly for wound healing dressings. It was evaluated the extraction and use of cashew apple bagasse lignin (CAB-Lig) due to its healing, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties for producing a hydrogel-based bandage. The extraction process involved acid and alkali treatments followed by precipitation. The antimicrobial potential of CAB-Lig was evaluated at different concentrations for formulating hydrogels. Hydrogels containing 0.1 % and 3 % lignin showed high swelling and liquid retention abilities. The 3 % lignin hydrogel exhibited effectiveness against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Incorporating CAB-Lig into the hydrogel structure improved its mechanical properties, making it more suitable for application as a bandage. Moreover, the extracted lignin showed low toxicity, indicating its safe use. A bandage was formulated by combining the CAB-Lig-based hydrogel with polyester, which possessed antimicrobial properties and demonstrated biocompatibility (L929 and HaCat cells). The results confirmed the potential of CAB-Lig for synthesizing hydrogels and dressings with antimicrobial properties, offering a sustainable solution for utilizing lignocellulosic biomass.

Development of lightweight, high-strength, and highly porous ligno-nanocellulosic foam with excellent antioxidant and insulation properties

This study reports an environmentally friendly ligno-nanocellulosic foam prepared by utilizing lignin (LGN), cellulose nanofiber (CNF), and citric acid (CA) as a green crosslinker through an easy, low-cost, and environmentally friendly process. The FTIR study and XPS analysis of the prepared LGN/CNF foams confirm the crosslinking between the components, which leads to lower shrinkage, lower density, and higher porosity than the neat CNF foam, achieving a remarkably low density of 19.59 mg/cm3 and high porosity of 98.84 % The morphology and microstructure of the foam show a uniform three-dimensional porous network built by strong cell walls. The crosslinked LGN/CNF foams indicate 182 % higher compressive modulus and 306 % higher compressive strength at 70 % strain than the neat CNF foam. Further, the addition of LGN and CA enhances the antioxidant activity of the foam. The prepared foam shows lower thermal conductivity and better sound absorption performance than the neat CNF foam, indicating a potential to be used as thermal insulation and sound-absorbing materials that can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Integrated acetic acid and deep eutectic solvent pretreatment on poplar for co-production of xylo-oligosaccharides, fermentable sugars and lignin antioxidants/adsorbents

Efficient fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass in usable forms of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin is very important for the sustainable lignocellulosic biorefinery. Herein, poplar sawdust was pretreated with an integrated process composed of acetic acid pre-hydrolysis (170 °C, 60 min) for xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) production and mild deep eutectic solvent (90-130 °C, 60 min) post-delignification for recovering lignin fractions, resulting in easily hydrolyzed cellulose fraction. Results showed that, after integrated pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis, 51 % of xylan and 92 % of glucan in raw biomass could be converted to XOS (DP 2-6) and glucose, respectively, while 71 % of the original lignin could be recovered in DES solvent. The resulting XOS were proven to ensure the growth of probiotics, Bifidobacterium adolescentis. Besides, the lignin macromolecules recovered from DES solvent showed high-purity (around 95 %), low-molecular weight (Mw around 2000), small particle size (270-170 nm) and high-PhOH (3.08 mmol/g) content, which were likely relevant to the excellent antioxidant activity (RSI = 15.16) and adsorbent activity (Pb(II) 461.89 mg/g lignin). Finally, mass balance and energy analysis revealed that the integrated pretreatment could be used as a promising approach for the production of bio-based chemicals and materials from woody biomass.

Use of lignin-based crude carbon dots as effective antioxidant for natural rubber

Rubber is widely recognized as an important material, whose irreplaceable applications range from damping materials to tires. Generally, rubber is vulnerable to oxidative degradation, leading to a deterioration in the material's performance. Therefore, antioxidants are often added to extend the service life of rubber. In this study, crude lignin-based carbon dots (CLCDs) were prepared by a simple hydrothermal treatment of lignin with H2O2 and triethylenetetramine. The thus prepared CLCDs exhibit excellent radical scavenging capability, and were incorporated into natural rubber with vinyl pyridine-styrene-butadiene terpolymer (VPR) as coupling agent. The results revealed that CLCDs could endow NR with excellent antioxidative performance. Interestingly, CLCDs even show superior antioxidant effect towards rubber compared to purified lignin-based carbon dots (PLCDs). This work provides a unique source of inspiration for the preparation of low-cost, highly effective CLCDs from plant biomass waste, most of lignin being used to produce steam and energy, with excellent antioxidant capability for rubber, which is beneficial for a green and sustainable world.

Boosting photo-induced antimicrobial activity of lignin nanoparticles with curcumin and zinc oxide

Lignin nanoparticles have gained increasing attention as a potential antimicrobial agent due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low toxicity. However, the limited ability of lignin to act as an antibacterial is a major barrier to its widespread use. Thus, it is crucial to develop novel approaches to amplify lignin's biological capabilities in order to promote its effective utilization. In this study, we modified lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) with photo-active curcumin (Cur), zinc oxide (ZnO), or a combination of both to enhance their antimicrobial properties. The successful modifications of LNPs were confirmed using comprehensive characterization techniques. The antimicrobial efficacy of the modified LNPs was assessed against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains. The results showed that the modification of LNPs with Cur and ZnO have much higher antibacterial and antibiofilm activities than unmodified LNPs. Moreover, photo illumination resulted in even higher antibacterial activity. Furthermore, atomic force microscopy revealed bacterial cells lysis and membrane damage by ZnO/Cur modified LNPs. Our research demonstrates that ZnO/Cur modified LNPs can serve as novel hybrid materials with enhanced antimicrobial capabilities. In addition, the photo-induced enhancement in antibacterial activity not only demonstrated the versatility of this hybrid material but also opened up interesting potential for bioinspired therapeutics agents.

Green and sustainable production of high-purity lignin microparticles with well-preserved substructure and enhanced anti-UV/oxidant activity using peroxide-promoted alkaline deep eutectic solvent

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as promising and eco-friendly solvents for the efficient extraction of lignin from biomass due to their low cost and environmental benefits. Nevertheless, the prevalent use of acidic DESs in lignin extraction often results in excessive depolymerization and recondensation of lignin, thereby impeding its downstream applications. In this study, we developed a range of alkaline DESs (ADESs), both pure and peroxide-containing, for the extraction of high-quality lignin from bamboo. Moreover, carbon dioxide (CO2) was employed for the precipitation and regeneration of the extracted lignin. The obtained lignin fractions were comprehensively characterized in terms of yield, purity, morphology, solubility, structural features, and anti-UV/oxidant activity. The results showed that the monoethanolamine-based ADES demonstrated superior performance among the pure ADESs. Structural analysis confirmed the well-preserved substructures of lignin fractions obtained using ADESs, with β-O-4 bond retention ranging from 49.8 % to 68.4 %. The incorporation of a suitable amount of peroxide improved lignin yield, morphology, solubility, and anti-UV/oxidant activity. Additionally, the anti-UV/oxidant activity of lignin exhibited a positive correlation with its phenolic hydroxyl content. This study provides a valuable reference for the green and sustainable production and valorization of lignin within the existing biorefinery framework.

Ductile, High-Lignin-Content Thermoset Films and Coatings

In the context of transitioning toward a more sustainable use of natural resources, the application of lignin to substitute commonly utilized petroleum-based plastics can play a key role. Although lignin is highly available at low cost and presents interesting properties, such as antioxidant and UV barrier activities, its application is limited by its low reactivity, which is a consequence of harsh conditions normally used to extract lignin from biomass. In this work, the use of glyoxylic acid lignin (GA lignin), rich in carboxylic acid groups and hence highly reactive toward epoxy cross-linkers, is presented. GA lignin, which is directly extracted from biomass via a one-step aldehyde-assisted fractionation process, allowed the preparation of thermoset films and coatings via a simple reaction with sustainable poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and glycerol diglycidyl ether cross-linkers. This allows one to prepare freestanding films containing up to 70 wt % lignin with tunable mechanical properties and covalently surface-attached coatings containing up to 90 wt % lignin with high solvent resistance. Both films and coatings display antioxidant properties and combine excellent UV barrier activity with high visible transparency, which is attractive for applications in sustainable food packaging.

Recent Advances of Lignin Functionalization for High-Performance and Advanced Functional Rubber Composites

The biomass lignin is the only large-volume renewable feedstock that is composed of aromatics but has been largely underutilized and is sought for valorization as a value-added material. Recent research has highlighted lignin as a promising alternative to traditional petrol-based reinforcements and functional additives for rubber composites. This review summarized the recent advances in the functionalization of lignin for a variety of rubber composites, as well as the compounding techniques for effectively dispersing lignin within the rubber matrix. Significant progress has been achieved in the development of high-performance and advanced functional rubber/lignin composites through carefully designing the structure of lignin-based additives and the optimization of interfacial morphologies. This Review discussed the effect of lignin on composite properties, including mechanical reinforcement, dynamic properties, antiaging performance, and oil resistance, and also the advanced stimuli-responsive performance in detail. A critical analysis for the future development of rubber/lignin composites is presented as concluding remarks.

Recent Advances in Functional Cellulose-based Films with Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Properties for Food Packaging

The packaging of food plays a crucial role in food preservation worldwide. However, traditional packaging systems are passive layers with weak efficiency in protecting the food quality. Therefore, packaged foods are gradually spoiled due to the oxidation and growth of microorganisms. Additionally, most of the commercial packaging films are made of petroleum-based materials which raise environmental concerns. Accordingly, the development of eco-friendly natural-derived active packaging systems has increased the attention of scientists. Cellulose as the most abundant polysaccharide on earth with high biocompatibility, no toxicity, and high biodegradability has extensively been applied for the fabrication of packaging films. However, neat cellulose-based films lack antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Therefore, neat cellulose-based films are passive films with weak food preservation performance. Active films have been developed by incorporating antioxidants and antimicrobial agents into the films. In this review, we have explored the latest research on the fabrication of antimicrobial/antioxidant cellulose-based active packaging films by incorporating natural extracts, natural polyphenols, nanoparticles, and microparticles into the cellulose-based film formulations. We categorized these types of packaging films into two main groups: (i) blend films which are obtained by mixing solutions of cellulose with other soluble antimicrobial/antioxidant agents such as natural extracts and polyphenols; and (ii) composite films which are fabricated by dispersing antimicrobial/antioxidant nano- or microfillers into the cellulose solution. The effect of these additives on the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films has been explained. Additionally, the changes in the other properties of the films such as hydrophilicity, water evaporation rate, and mechanical properties have also been briefly addressed.

Sugarcane Light-Colored Lignin: A Renewable Resource for Sustainable Beauty

Lignin has emerged as a promising eco-friendly multifunctional ingredient for cosmetic applications, due to its ability to protect against ultraviolet radiation and its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. However, its typical dark color and low water solubility limit its application in cosmetics. This study presents a simple process for obtaining light-colored lignin (LCLig) from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) alkaline black liquor, involving an oxidation treatment with hydrogen peroxide, followed by precipitation with sulfuric acid. The physico-chemical characterization, antioxidant and emulsifying potential of LCLig, and determination of its safety and stability in an oil-in-water emulsion were performed. A high-purity lignin (81.6%) with improved water solubility was obtained, as a result of the balance between the total aromatic phenolic units and the carboxylic acids. In addition, the antioxidant and emulsifying capacities of the obtained LCLig were demonstrated. The color reduction treatment did not compromise the safety of lignin for topical cosmetic applications. The emulsion was stable in terms of organoleptic properties (color, pH, and viscosity) and antioxidant activity over 3 months at 4, 25, and 40 °C.

Fractionation and evaluation of light-colored lignin extracted from bamboo shoot shells using hydrated deep eutectic solvents

In this study, light-colored lignin was extracted from bamboo shoot shells (BSS) using a hydrated deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment. The hydrated DES used in pretreatment consist of formic acid, benzyl triethylammonium chloride (BTEAC) and water. The pretreatment using a hydrated DES containing 30% water (H30) demonstrate efficient delignification (82.9%). Additionally, the hydrated DES protected the β-O-4 linkage from excessive cleavage and recondensation as well as keep the light-colored of lignin. Moreover, the hydrated DES extracted lignin exhibits superior antioxidant performance and tyrosinase inhibitory capacity compared to the control. Notably, incorporating 5% lignin of H30-extracted lignin into a commercial suncream led to a remarkable enhancement of the SPF value, elevating from 14.8 to 32.6. In summary, the proposed hydrated DES pretreatment method offers significant benefits for extracting light-colored lignin, thereby promoting the multifunctional application of lignin in cosmetics.

Recent advances in lignin antioxidant: Antioxidant mechanism, evaluation methods, influence factors and various applications

Lignin, a by-product of processing lignocellulosic materials, has a polyphenolic structure and can be used as an antioxidant directly or synergistically with synthetic types of antioxidants, leading to different applications. Its antioxidant mechanism is mainly related to the production of ROS, but the details need to be further investigated. The antioxidant property of lignin is mainly related to the content of phenolic hydroxyl group, but methoxy, purity will also have an effect on it. In addition, different methods to detect the antioxidant properties of lignin have different advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, the antioxidant mechanism of lignin, the methods to determine the antioxidant activity and the progress of its application in various fields are reviewed. In addition, the current research on the antioxidant properties of lignin and the hot directions are provided, and an outlook on the research into the antioxidant properties of lignin is provided to broaden its potential application areas.

Advanced NMR Characterization of Aquasolv Omni (AqSO) Biorefinery Lignins/Lignin-Carbohydrate Complexes

Our recently reported AquaSolv Omni (AqSO) process shows great potential as a parameter-controlled type of biorefinery, which allows tuning of structure and properties of the products towards their optimal use in high-value applications. Herein, a comprehensive NMR (quantitative 13 C, 31 P, and 2D heteronuclear single-quantum coherence) structural characterization of AqSO lignins is reported. The effect of the process severity (P-factor) and liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S) on the structure of the extracted lignins has been investigated and discussed. Low severity (P-factor in the range 400-600) and L/S=1 led to the isolation of less degraded lignin with a higher β-O-4 content up to 34/100 Ar. Harsher processing conditions (P-factor=1000-2500) yielded more condensed lignins with a high degree of condensation up to 66 at P-factor=2000. New types of lignin moieties, such as alkyl-aryl and alkyl-alkyl chemical bonds together with novel furan oxygenated structures have been identified and quantified for the first time. In addition, the formation of lignin carbohydrate complexes bonds has been hypothesized at low severity and L/S. Based on the obtained data we were able to formulate a possible outlook of the occurring reactions during the hydrothermal treatment. Overall, such detailed structural information bridges the gap from process engineering to sustainable product development.

A Comprehensive Mini-Review on Lignin-Based Nanomaterials for Food Applications: Systemic Advancement and Future Trends

The shift to an environmentally friendly material economy requires renewable resource exploration. This shift may depend on lignin valorization. Lignin is an aromatic polymer that makes up one-third of total lingo-cellulosic biomass and is separated into large amounts for biofuel and paper manufacture. This renewable polymer is readily available at a very low cost as nearly all the lignin that is produced each year (90-100 million tons) is simply burned as a low-value fuel. Lignin offers potential qualities for many applications, and yet it is underutilized. This Perspective highlights lignin-based material prospects and problems in food packaging, antimicrobial, and agricultural applications. The first half will discuss the present and future studies on exploiting lignin as an addition to improve food packaging's mechanical, gas, UV, bioactive molecules, polyphenols, and antioxidant qualities. Second, lignin's antibacterial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses will be discussed. In conclusion, lignin agriculture will be discussed in the food industries.

"Rigid-Flexible" Anisotropic Biomass-Derived Aerogels with Superior Mechanical Properties for Oil Recovery and Thermal Insulation

Aerogels with low density, high mechanical strength, and excellent elasticity have a wide potential for applications in wastewater treatment, thermal management, and sensors. However, the fabrication of such aerogels from biomass materials required complex preparation processes. Herein, a sustainable and facile strategy was reported to construct lignin/cellulose aerogels (LCMA) with three-dimensional interconnected structures by introducing homologous lignin with a polyphenyl propane structure as a structural enhancer through a top-down directional freezing approach, prompting a 2036% enhancement in compressive modulus and an 8-12-fold increase in oil absorption capacity. In addition, the hydrophobic aerogels with superelasticity were achieved by combining the aligned polygon-like structure and flexible silane chains, which exhibited remarkable compressional fatigue resistance and superhydrophobicity (WCA = 168°). Attributed to its unique pore design and surface morphology control, the prepared aerogel exhibited excellent performance in immiscible oil-water separation and water-in-oil emulsion separation. Due to the ultra-low density (8.3 mg·cm-3) as well as high porosity (98.87%), the obtained aerogel showed a low thermal conductivity (0.02565 ± 0.0024 W·m-1·K-1), demonstrating a potential in insulation applications. The synthetic strategy and sustainability concept presented in this work could provide guidance for the preparation of advanced biomass-based aerogels with unique properties for a wide range of applications.

Sustainable Biomass Lignin-Based Hydrogels: A Review on Properties, Formulation, and Biomedical Applications

Different techniques have been developed to overcome the recalcitrant nature of lignocellulosic biomass and extract lignin biopolymer. Lignin has gained considerable interest owing to its attractive properties. These properties may be more beneficial when including lignin in the preparation of highly desired value-added products, including hydrogels. Lignin biopolymer, as one of the three major components of lignocellulosic biomaterials, has attracted significant interest in the biomedical field due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Its valorization by developing new hydrogels has increased in recent years. Furthermore, lignin-based hydrogels have shown great potential for various biomedical applications, and their copolymerization with other polymers and biopolymers further expands their possibilities. In this regard, lignin-based hydrogels can be synthesized by a variety of methods, including but not limited to interpenetrating polymer networks and polymerization, crosslinking copolymerization, crosslinking grafted lignin and monomers, atom transfer radical polymerization, and reversible addition-fragmentation transfer polymerization. As an example, the crosslinking mechanism of lignin-chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel involves active groups of lignin such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, and sulfonic groups that can form hydrogen bonds (with groups in the chemical structures of chitosan and/or PVA) and ionic bonds (with groups in the chemical structures of chitosan and/or PVA). The aim of this review paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of lignin-based hydrogels and their applications, focusing on the preparation and properties of lignin-based hydrogels and the biomedical applications of these hydrogels. In addition, we explore their potential in wound healing, drug delivery systems, and 3D bioprinting, showcasing the unique properties of lignin-based hydrogels that enable their successful utilization in these areas. Finally, we discuss future trends in the field and draw conclusions based on the findings presented.

The antioxidant activity of polysaccharides: A structure-function relationship overview

Over the last years, polysaccharides have been linked to antioxidant effects using both in vitro chemical and biological models. The reported structures, claimed to act as antioxidants, comprise chitosan, pectic polysaccharides, glucans, mannoproteins, alginates, fucoidans, and many others of all type of biological sources. The structural features linked to the antioxidant action include the polysaccharide charge, molecular weight, and the occurrence of non-carbohydrate substituents. The establishment of structure/function relationships can be, however, biased by secondary phenomena that tailor polysaccharides behavior in antioxidant systems. In this sense, this review confronts some basic concepts of polysaccharides chemistry with the current claim of carbohydrates as antioxidants. It critically discusses how the fine structure and properties of polysaccharides can define polysaccharides as antioxidants. Polysaccharides antioxidant action is highly dependent on their solubility, sugar ring structure, molecular weight, occurrence of positive or negatively charged groups, protein moieties and covalently linked phenolic compounds. However, the occurrence of phenolic compounds and protein as contaminants leads to misleading results in methodologies often used for screening and characterization purposes, as well as in vivo models. Despite falling in the concept of antioxidants, the role of polysaccharides must be well defined according with the matrices where they are involved.

Secondary Metabolomic Analysis and In Vitro Bioactivity Evaluation of Stems Provide a Comprehensive Comparison between Dendrobium chrysotoxum and Dendrobium thyrsiflorum

The stems of Dendrobium chrysotoxum (DC) are commonly used as health-promoting foods due to their excellent biological activities. However, the stems of D. thyrsiflorum (DT) are often used to meet the scarcity of DC in production because of their highly similar morphology. However, the related metabolomic and bioactive information on the stems of DC and DT are largely deficient. Here, secondary metabolites of DC and DT stems were identified using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, and their health-promoting functions were evaluated using several in vitro arrays. A total of 490 metabolites were identified in two stems, and 274 were significantly different. We screened out 10 key metabolites to discriminate the two species, and 36 metabolites were determined as health-promoting constituents. In summary, DT stems with higher extract yield, higher total phenolics and flavonoids, and stronger in vitro antioxidant activities demonstrated considerable potential in food and health fields.

Ethanol organosolv lignin as a substitute for commercial antioxidants, focusing on the structural properties and synergistic effect with myricetin

Lignin has potential as a substitute for natural antioxidants in cosmetics and food industries due to its radical scavenging ability and price competitiveness. The antioxidant activity of lignin depends on its structural properties, and they accordingly have synergy with natural antioxidants. Based on the structural characteristics, the antioxidant activity of ethanol organosolv lignin (EOL) and synergy with myricetin were investigated. The phenolic-OH content was a predominant factor in the antioxidant activity of EOL, and EOL-H with a higher phenolic-OH content and lower IC₅₀ value (0.17 mg/mL) covered a wide synergy range of 1:32-2:1 (EOL:myricetin). The synergistic effect was verified by comparing predicted and actual values based on ESR analysis, and the phenolic-OH ratio (>0.4) of myricetin and EOL for the synergy was suggested. In this respect, the results highlight the potential of lignin with high phenolic-OH content as a substitute for commercial antioxidants with superior activity and broad synergy ranges.

Lignins as Promising Renewable Biopolymers and Bioactive Compounds for High-Performance Materials

The recycling of biomass into high-value-added materials requires important developments in research and technology to create a sustainable circular economy. Lignin, as a component of biomass, is a multipurpose aromatic polymer with a significant potential to be used as a renewable bioresource in many fields in which it acts both as promising biopolymer and bioactive compound. This comprehensive review gives brief insights into the recent research and technological trends on the potential of lignin development and utilization. It is divided into ten main sections, starting with an outlook on its diversity; main properties and possibilities to be used as a raw material for fuels, aromatic chemicals, plastics, or thermoset substitutes; and new developments in the use of lignin as a bioactive compound and in nanoparticles, hydrogels, 3D-printing-based lignin biomaterials, new sustainable biomaterials, and energy production and storage. In each section are presented recent developments in the preparation of lignin-based biomaterials, especially the green approaches to obtaining nanoparticles, hydrogels, and multifunctional materials as blends and bio(nano)composites; most suitable lignin type for each category of the envisaged products; main properties of the obtained lignin-based materials, etc. Different application categories of lignin within various sectors, which could provide completely sustainable energy conversion, such as in agriculture and environment protection, food packaging, biomedicine, and cosmetics, are also described. The medical and therapeutic potential of lignin-derived materials is evidenced in applications such as antimicrobial, antiviral, and antitumor agents; carriers for drug delivery systems with controlled/targeting drug release; tissue engineering and wound healing; and coatings, natural sunscreen, and surfactants. Lignin is mainly used for fuel, and, recently, studies highlighted more sustainable bioenergy production technologies, such as the supercapacitor electrode, photocatalysts, and photovoltaics.

3D-Printed Polylactic Acid/Lignin Films with Great Mechanical Properties and Tunable Functionalities towards Superior UV-Shielding, Haze, and Antioxidant Properties

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is regarded as a novel technique to realize the customized production of films. However, the relative lack of printable materials with excellent mechanical properties and tailored functionalities seriously restricts its wide application. Herein, a promising multifunctional 3D printing filament was fabricated by incorporating lignin into the polylactic acid (PLA) matrix and firstly applied to film production. The results indicate that lignin was an excellent mechanical reinforcement of the PLA matrix, especially for toughening. Only 0.5% lignin doping improved the toughness by 81.8%. Additionally, 3D-printed films with 0.5-5% lignin exhibited excellent ultraviolet (UV)-blocking capability of 87.4-99.9% for UVB and 65.6-99.8% for UVA, as well as remarkable antioxidant properties, ranging from 24.0% to 79.0%, and high levels of haze, ranging from 63.5% to 92.5%. Moreover, the prepared PLA/lignin (P/L) films based on 3D printing achieved the customization of film production and have potential applications in the fields of packaging, electronic products, medical care, and so forth. Overall, this work not only enriches the 3D printing composites with tailored multifunctionality but also brings the promising potential for the production of customized films.

Biosynthesis of Novel Ascorbic Acid Esters and Their Encapsulation in Lignin Nanoparticles as Carriers and Stabilizing Systems

A dual-target strategy was designed for the application of lignin nanoparticles in the lipase mediated biosynthesis of novel 3-O-ethyl-L-ascorbyl-6-ferulate and 3-O-ethyl-L-ascorbyl-6-palmitate and in their successive solvent-shift encapsulation in order to improve stability and antioxidant activity against temperature and pH-dependent degradation. The loaded lignin nanoparticles were fully characterized in terms of kinetic release, radical scavenging activity and stability under pH 3 and thermal stress (60 °C), showing improved antioxidant activity and high efficacy in the protection of ascorbic acid esters from degradation.

Physicochemical Properties, Thermal Stability, and Pyrolysis Behavior of Antioxidative Lignin from Water Chestnut Shell Obtained with Ternary Deep Eutectic Solvents

The molecular weight of lignin extracted from lignocellulosic biomass is an important factor in determining its valorization in industrial processes. Herein, this work aims to explore the extraction of high molecular weight and bioactive lignin from water chestnut shells under mild conditions. Five kinds of deep eutectic solvents were prepared and applied to isolate lignin from water chestnut shells. The extracted lignin was further characterized with element analysis, gel permeation chromatography, and Ultraviolet-visible and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The distribution of pyrolysis products was identified and quantified with thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and pyrolysis-gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. The results showed that choline chloride/ethylene glycol/p-toluenesulfonic acid (1:1.8:0.2 molar ratio) exhibited the highest fractionation efficiency for lignin (84.17% yield) at 100 °C for 2 h. Simultaneously, the lignin showed high purity (90.4%), high relative molecular weight (37,077 g/mol), and excellent uniformity. Furthermore, the aromatic ring structure of lignin remained intact, consisting mainly of p-hydroxyphenyl, syringl, and guaiacyl subunits. The lignin generated a large number of volatile organic compounds during the depolymerization process, mainly composed of ketones, phenols, syringols, guaiacols, esters, and aromatic compounds. Finally, the antioxidant activity of the lignin sample was evaluated with the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay; the lignin from water chestnut shells showed excellent antioxidant activity. These findings confirm that lignin from water chestnut shells has a broad application prospect in valuable chemicals, biofuels and bio-functional materials.

Statistical evaluation of DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and Folin-Ciocalteu assays to assess the antioxidant capacity of lignins

This research studies in detail four different assays, namely DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), FRAP (ferric ion reducing antioxidant potential) and FC (Folin-Ciocalteu), to determine the antioxidant capacity of standard substances as well as 50 organosolv lignins, and two kraft lignins. The coefficient of variation was determined for each method and was lowest for ABTS and highest for DPPH. The best correlation was found for FRAP and FC, which both rely on a single electron transfer mechanism. A good correlation between ABTS, FRAP and FC, respectively, could be observed, even though ABTS relies on a more complex reaction mechanism. The DPPH assay merely correlates with the others, implying that it reflects different antioxidative attributes due to a different reaction mechanism. Lignins obtained from paulownia and silphium have been investigated for the first time regarding their antioxidant capacity. Paulownia lignin is in the same range as beech wood lignin, while silphium lignin resembles wheat straw lignin. Miscanthus lignin is an exception from the grass lignins and possesses a significantly higher antioxidant capacity. All lignins possess a good antioxidant capacity and thus are promising candidates for various applications, e. g. as additives in food packaging or for biomedical purposes.

Lignin from sugarcane bagasse as a prebiotic additive for poultry feed

Diet is a crucial factor on health and well-being of livestock animals. Nutritional strengthening with diet formulations is essential to the livestock industry and animal perfor-mance. Searching for valuable feed additives among by-products may promote not only circular economy, but also functional diets. Lignin from sugarcane bagasse was proposed as a potential prebiotic additive for chickens and incorporated at 1 % (w/w) in commercial chicken feed, tested in two feed forms, namely, mash and pellets. Physico-chemical characterization of both feed types with and without lignin was performed. Also, the prebiotic potential for feeds with lignin was assessed by in vitro gastrointestinal model and evaluated the impact on chicken cecal Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. As for the pellet's physical quality, there was a higher cohesion of the pellets with lignin, indicating a higher resistance to breakout and lignin decreases the tendency of the pellets for microbial contamination. Regarding the prebiotic potential, mash feed with lignin showed higher promotion of Bifidobacterium in comparison with mash feed without lignin and to pellet feed with lignin. Lignin from sugarcane bagasse has prebiotic potential as additive to chicken feed when supplemented in mash feed diets, presenting itself as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to chicken feed additives supplementation.

Comparative study of acid- and alkali-catalyzed 1,4-butanediol pretreatment for co-production of fermentable sugars and value-added lignin compounds

BACKGROUND

Organosolv pretreatment is one of the most efficient methods for delignification and boosting biomass saccharification. As compared to typical ethanol organosolv pretreatments, 1,4-butanediol (BDO) organosolv pretreatment is a high-boiling-point solvent pretreatment, which can generate low pressure in the reactor during high temperature cooking that improves the operation safety. Although several studies showed that organosolv pretreatment can lead to effective delignification and enhancement in glucan hydrolysis, there has been no studies on acid- and alkali-catalyzed BDO pretreatment, as well as their comparison on promoting biomass saccharification and lignin utilization.

RESULTS

It was shown that BDO organosolv pretreatment was more effective in removing lignin from poplar as compared with typical ethanol organosolv pretreatment under the same pretreatment conditions. HCl-BDO pretreatment with 40 mM acid loading led to 82.04% of original lignin removed from biomass, as compared to the lignin removal of 59.66% in HCl-Ethanol pretreatment. Besides, acid-catalyzed BDO pretreatment was more effective in improving the enzymatic digestibility of poplar than alkali-catalyzed BDO pretreatment. As a result, HCl-BDO with acid loading of 40 mM provided a good enzymatic digestibility of cellulose (91.16%) and the maximum sugar yield of 79.41% from original woody biomass. The linear correlations between physicochemical structure (e.g., fiber swelling, cellulose crystallinity, crystallite size, surface lignin coverage and cellulose accessibility) changes of BDO pretreated poplar and enzymatic hydrolysis were plotted to figure out the main factors that influenced biomass saccharification. Moreover, acid-catalyzed BDO pretreatment mainly brought about the phenolic hydroxyl (PhOH) groups formation in lignin structure, while alkali-catalyzed BDO pretreatment mostly led to the lower molecular weight of lignin.

CONCLUSIONS

Results indicated that the acid-catalyzed BDO organosolv pretreatment could significantly improve enzymatic digestibility of the highly recalcitrant woody biomass. The great enzymatic hydrolysis of glucan resulted from increased cellulose accessibility, which mostly associated with the higher degree of delignification and hemicellulose solubilization, as well as the more increase in fiber swelling. Besides, lignin was recovered from the organic solvent, which could be used as natural antioxidants. The formation of phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignin structure and the lower molecular weight of lignin contributed to its greater radical scavenging capacity.

Improving the protective ability of lignin against vascular and neurological development in BPAF-induced zebrafish by high-pressure homogenization technology

The lack of a sufficient amount of functional groups in the lignin structure limits its bioapplication. In this work, high-pressure homogenization was performed on original kraft lignin (L-ORI) to prepare lignin nanoparticles (L-NANO), which aimed to improve its functional group contents for further vascular and neurological applications. The results showed that the prepared L-NANO possessed spherical structures with diameters of 40.3-160.4 nm and increased amount of hydroxyl groups. Compared to L-ORI, L-NANO possessed better in vivo and in vitro antioxidant capacity, which could endow it with enhanced protective effects for the vascular and neural development of bisphenol AF (BPAF)-induced zebrafish. In addition, L-NANO reduced the neurotoxicity and cardiovascular toxicity of BPAF in zebrafish by upregulating the expression levels of oxidative stress-related genes (Cu/Zn-Sod and cat), which could further significantly upregulate the expression levels of neurogenesis genes (elavl3, gap43, mbp, and syn2a) and protect the contraction of the cardinal vein (CCV) and early central nervous system development by upregulating the expression levels of vascular genes (flk1 and flt4). The excellent cardiovascular and neurodevelopmental protective ability of L-NANO indicated that high-pressure homogenization is a promising technology for improving the bioactivity of lignin.

Lignin-derived polyphenols with enhanced antioxidant activities by chemical demethylation and their structure-activity relationship

Lignin valorization to biobased polyphenols antioxidants is increasingly attractive in the modern industry due to their inherent phenolic structures. Herein, lignin-derived polyphenols with enhanced antioxidant activities were prepared from the most available technical lignin including organosolv lignin (OL), alkali lignin (AL), and enzyme lignin (EL) by iodocyclohexane (ICH) chemical demethylation. The structural evolution of lignin indicated that the C_Ar-OCH₃ group and the C_Ar-O-C_alkyl side-chain could be effectively transformed into the C_Ar-OH group, resulting in a significant increase of the phenolic-OH content and a slight decrease of the molecular weight. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH·) scavenging activity was in the order of ICHOL-24 > ICHAL-24 > ICHEL-24 ≈ FA > BHT, and the IC₅₀ value of ICHOL-24 was 0.56 times lower than that of BHT. The structure-activity relationship demonstrated the activities were quasi-linearly related to phenolic-OH contents and could be affected by molecular weights. The H/G/S proportions of lignin could be an indicator for accurate screening of efficient lignin-derived polyphenols antioxidants (LPA). It was preliminarily estimated to have economic feasibility for producing LPA from technical lignin by demethylation compared with synthetic or natural antioxidants. This work will help to develop efficient biobased antioxidants for lignin valorization.

Acidic and alkaline deep eutectic solvents (DESs) pretreatment of grapevine: Component analysis, characterization, lignin structural analysis, and antioxidant properties

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been extensively applied to pretreat lignocellulose; however, comparative research on acidic and alkaline DES pretreatment is relatively lacking. Herein, pretreatment of grapevine agricultural by-products with seven DESs were compared in terms of removal of lignin and hemicellulose and component analysis of the pretreated residues. Among the tested DESs, both acidic choline chloride-lactic (CHCl-LA), and alkaline potassium carbonate-ethylene glycol (K₂CO₃-EG) were effective in delignification. Thereafter, the CHCl-LA and K₂CO₃-EG extracted lignin was compared by analyzing their physicochemical structure changes and antioxidant properties. The results showed that the thermal stability, molecular weight, and phenol hydroxyl percentage of CHCl-LA lignin were inferior to K₂CO₃-EG lignin. It was found that the high antioxidant activity of K₂CO₃-EG lignin was mainly attributed to the abundant phenol hydroxyl, guaiacyl (G), and para-hydroxy-phenyl (H). By comparing acidic and alkaline DES pretreatments and their lignin nuances in biorefining, novel insights are derived for the scheduling and selection of DES for lignocellulosic pretreatment.

Green and sustainable extraction of lignin by deep eutectic solvent, its antioxidant activity, and applications in the food industry

Lignin, an amorphous biomacromolecule abundantly distributed in the plant kingdom, has gained considerable attention due to its intrinsic bioactivities and renewable nature. Owing to its polyphenolic structure, lignin has a variety of human health activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antitumor, and other activities. The extraction of lignin from various sources in a green and sustainable manner is critical in the food industry. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) has recently been recognized as a class of safe and environmentally friendly media capable of efficiently extracting lignin. This article comprehensively reviews the recent advances in lignin extraction using DES, discusses the influential factors on the antioxidant activity of lignin, interprets the relationship between antioxidant activity and lignin structure, and overviews the applications of lignin in the food industry. We aim to highlight the advantages of DES in lignin extraction and valorization from the nutrition and food views.

Effects of thermal and physical modification on functional properties of organosolv lignin from sugarcane bagasse and its application in cosmeceutical products

Organosolv lignin is an emerging bio-additive for creating functional properties in various products with its advantages in high-purity, sulfur-free, biocompatibility, and solubility in green solvents. In this study, effects of thermal and physical modification on alterations of functional properties and particle size distribution of isolated organosolv lignin from sugarcane bagasse (OLB) were studied. Thermal treatment of OLB at increasing temperatures from 170 to 230°C in 70%w/w aqueous ethanol led to alteration of phenolic hydroxyl content, while ultrasonication resulted in homogeneous size distribution of the modified OLB according to laser diffraction and scanning electron micrograph. The highest ultraviolet light absorbance and antioxidant activities were obtained at 190°C treatment which were correlated to the highest phenolic group content. Application of the modified OLB at 3% w/w in a base cream formulation resulted in enhancement of the anti-UV activity to exceed SPF 50 with increasing antioxidant activity in the product. The work provides basis on modification of organosolv lignin for application as a potent functional additive in cosmeceutical products.

Bio-based films with high antioxidant and improved water-resistant properties from cellulose nanofibres and lignin nanoparticles

In this study, we propose a simple route for the fabrication of bio-based composite films from cellulose nanofibres (CNF) and lignin. First, CNFs were periodate oxidised to obtain dialdehyde cellulose nanofibres (DACNF). Subsequently, lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) with diameters between 50 and 150 nm were prepared using kraft lignin and mixed with DACNF to fabricate DACNF-LNP nanocomposite films via a condensation reaction. The addition of LNPs rendered the films with high ultraviolet-shielding and antioxidant properties. The water contact angle increased for the composite films compared with that of pure CNF film, while the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) decreased. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposite films were significantly improved by the addition of LNPs. The dry tensile stress of DACNF-LNPs5 with 5 % LNPs significantly increased from 47 to 164 MPa. It was also higher than that of CNF-LNPs5 (105 MPa), in which CNFs were not periodate oxidised. After immersion in water for 1 h, the wet tensile strength of DACNF-LNPs5 was 31 MPa, 3 times higher than that of CNF-LNPs5 (7 MPa). These results indicate that the water-resistant properties of the composite films were significantly enhanced. The films prepared from green and renewable bioresources exhibited potential applications in food packaging and biomedical materials.

Organosolv pretreatment for biorefineries: Current status, perspectives, and challenges

Biorefineries integrate processes for the sustainable conversion of biomass into chemicals, materials, and bioenergy so that resources are optimized and effluents are minimized. Despite the vast potential of lignocellulosic biorefineries, their success depends heavily on effective, economically viable, and sustainable biomass fractionation. Although efficient, organosolv pretreatment still faces challenges that must be overcome for its widespread utilization, mainly related to solvent type and recycling, robustness regarding biomass type and integration of hemicellulose recovery and use. This review shows the recent advances and state-of-the-art of organosolv pretreatment, discussing the advances, such as the use of biobased solvents, whilst also shedding light on the perspectives of using the streams - cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin - to produce biofuels and products of high added value. In addition, it presents an overview of the existing industrial implementations of organosolv processes and, lastly, shows the main scientific and industrial challenges and opportunities for this process.

Structural Features of Small Molecule Antioxidants and Strategic Modifications to Improve Potential Bioactivity

This review surveys the major structural features in various groups of small molecules that are considered to be antioxidants, including natural and synthetic compounds alike. Recent advances in the strategic modification of known small molecule antioxidants are also described. The highlight is placed on changing major physicochemical parameters, including log p, bond dissociation energy, ionization potential, and others which result in improved antioxidant activity.

Integration of high-throughput omics technologies in medicinal plant research: The new era of natural drug discovery

Medicinal plants are natural sources to unravel novel bioactive compounds to satisfy human pharmacological potentials. The world's demand for herbal medicines is increasing year by year; however, large-scale production of medicinal plants and their derivatives is still limited. The rapid development of modern technology has stimulated multi-omics research in medicinal plants, leading to a series of breakthroughs on key genes, metabolites, enzymes involved in biosynthesis and regulation of active compounds. Here, we summarize the latest research progress on the molecular intricacy of medicinal plants, including the comparison of genomics to demonstrate variation and evolution among species, the application of transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics to explore dynamic changes of molecular compounds, and the utilization of potential resources for natural drug discovery. These multi-omics research provide the theoretical basis for environmental adaptation of medicinal plants and allow us to understand the chemical diversity and composition of bioactive compounds. Many medicinal herbs' phytochemical constituents and their potential health benefits are not fully explored. Given their large diversity and global distribution as well as the impacts of growth duration and environmental factors on bioactive phytochemicals in medicinal plants, it is crucial to emphasize the research needs of using multi-omics technologies to address basic and applied problems in medicinal plants to aid in developing new and improved medicinal plant resources and discovering novel medicinal ingredients.

Effective fractionation of lignocellulose components and lignin valorization by combination of deep eutectic solvent with ethanol

Introduction: A combination of deep eutectic solvent with ethanol was developed for pretreatment of Broussonetia papyrifera to effectively extract lignin and promote the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. Methods: In order to further explore the optimal conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis, a central composite design method was applied. Results and Discussion: The correlation between each factor and glucose yield was obtained, and the optimal conditions was 160°C, 60 min, the ratio of DES to E was 1/1 (mol/mol). The results showed that compared with control, the glucose yield increased by 130.67% under the optimal pretreatment conditions. Furthermore, the specific surface area of biomass was increased by 66.95%, and the content of xylan and lignin was decreased by 86.71% and 85.83%. The correlation between xylan/lignin removal and enzymatic hydrolysis showed that the removal of lignin facilitated the glucose yield more significantly than that of xylan. To further explore the lignin valorization, the structural and antioxidant analysis of recovered lignin revealed that high temperature was favorable for lignin with good antioxidant performance. This pretreatment is a promising method for separating lignin with high antioxidant activity and improving cellulose digestibility.

Stabilized Lignin Nanoparticles for Versatile Hybrid and Functional Nanomaterials

Spherical lignin nanoparticles are emerging biobased nanomaterials, but instability and dissolution in organic solvents and aqueous alkali restrict their applicability. Here, we report the synthesis of hydroxymethylated lignin nanoparticles and their hydrothermal curing to stabilize the particles by internal cross-linking reactions. These colloidally stable particles contain a high biobased content of 97% with a tunable particle size distribution and structural stability in aqueous media (pH 3 to 12) and organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol, dimethylformamide, and tetrahydrofuran. We demonstrate that the free phenolic hydroxyl groups that are preserved in the cured particles function as efficient reducing sites for silver ions, giving rise to hybrid lignin-silver nanoparticles that can be used for quick and facile sensing of hydrogen peroxide. The stabilized lignin particles can also be directly modified using base-catalyzed reactions such as the ring-opening of cationic epoxides that render the particles with pH-dependent agglomeration and redispersion properties. Combining scalable synthesis, solvent stability, and reusability, this new class of lignin nanoparticles shows potential for its use in circular biobased nanomaterials.
