Abstract
Background Improved bone health during adolescence can have lifelong implications, reducing the risk of bone fragility. Objective This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an e-book in increasing knowledge about and promoting healthy practices related to bone health among Malay adolescents in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Methods A total of 72 adolescents (female: n=51, 71%; age: mean 15, SD 0.74 y) were recruited from selected secondary schools. The participants answered a pretest web-based questionnaire on sociodemographic data, knowledge about osteoporosis, and physical activity. A video call was conducted to assess dietary calcium intake. Participants were provided with a link to an e-book on bone health and instructed to read it within 2 weeks. Postintervention assessments included those for knowledge, physical activity, dietary calcium intake, and acceptance of the e-book. Results There was a significant increase in the median knowledge score, which was 40.6% (IQR 31.3%-46.9%) during the pretest and 71.9% (IQR 53.9%-81.3%) during the posttest (P<.001). However, no changes were observed in dietary calcium intake or physical activity levels. Most participants did not meet the recommended calcium requirements (61/62, 98%) and exhibited sedentary behavior (pretest: 51/62, 82%; posttest: 48/62, 77%). The e-book, however, was well accepted, with the majority reporting that they understood the contents (70/72, 97%), liked the graphics (71/72, 99%), and approved of the layout (60/72, 83%) and font size (66/72, 92%) used. Conclusions The developed e-book effectively increases knowledge levels related to bone health and is well accepted among participants. However, this educational material did not improve bone health practices. Additional strategies are necessary to bridge the gap between knowledge and behavior change.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Providing adequate care for the person with a fragility fracture is essential to prevent recurrences. A key strategy involves training by improving nursing care in the fields of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. However, in Portugal, there is no report on the level of knowledge of nurses, nor experimental studies on how to improve it. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to assess the knowledge of Rehabilitation Nurses in Portugal on osteoporosis and fragility fractures. Additionally, it sought to evaluate the impact of a specific educational programme on nurses' knowledge. METHODS In Phase I, a cross-sectional study involved 452 participants, utilizing a 26-question knowledge test. In Phase II, a quasi-experimental study included 42 nurses from 28 hospitals, subjected to a 30-h hybrid educational programme. The program comprised 9 online (2 h 30 min each) and 2 live sessions, covering assessment, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment, monitoring, project planning, consultations, and outcome indicators measurement. A before-and-after programme knowledge test was administered. RESULTS Phase I revealed an average knowledge score of 69.6%. In Phase II, there was a significant improvement with programme (70.4% vs. 85.8%, p < 0.01). Specialized nurses performed better than non-specialized nurses (80% vs. 75%, p = 0.011), and those from orthopaedic services showed the greatest improvement (92% vs. 83%, p = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS Rehabilitation Nurses in Portugal have room to improve their knowledge of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. The hybrid educational programme proved effective in improving nurses' knowledge, especially among specialist and orthopaedic service nurses. We hope that this knowledge can be translated into continuous improvement in healthcare provision.

Abstract
This study assessed osteoporosis knowledge and awareness among multiple sclerosis patients. The findings reveal a concerning lack of knowledge and awareness regarding osteoporosis, emphasizing the necessity for educational interventions to enhance early detection and mitigate complications within this particular patient group. AIM To assess the knowledge and awareness of osteoporosis in Turkish multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. MATERIAL-METHODS Three hundred twenty-five patients were asked to fill out the osteoporosis awareness scale (OAS), which has a scoring range of 31-124, and the revised osteoporosis knowledge test (R-OKT), which has a score range of 0-32. Fall risk assessment for patients was conducted using the timed up-and-go test (high risk: > 30, moderate risk: 29-20, low risk: 14-19, and no risk: < 13 s). RESULTS An average score of 59.42 ± 19.63(31%) on the OAS and 14.99 ± 5.39 (47%) on the R-OKT was detected. No difference was found in R-OKT scores between genders, education levels, and patients with different fall risks and between genders and education levels in OAS scores. Patients with low, medium, and high fall risks exhibited higher OAS scores compared to those without any fall risk (p = 0.006, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively). No correlation was found between gender and education level with OAS and R-OKT scores and between the R-OKT scores and the risk of falls. There was a weak correlation between the OAS scores and an increased risk of falls (r = 0.269, p < 0.001). No differences between the age groups regarding OAS and R-OKT scores were observed. CONCLUSIONS Turkish MS patients have inadequate knowledge and low awareness of OP compared to the healthy population. Urgent action is warranted to educate and support individuals with MS, implementing targeted interventions and awareness campaigns to improve early detection and prevent osteoporosis-related complications. Abstract
Lifelong efforts to maintain bone health are beneficial for preventing osteoporosis, and public health professionals play an important role in that. The current study aimed to assess the knowledge of osteoporosis among public health professionals in a Japanese municipal office and explored associated factors. A questionnaire was distributed to 124 eligible public health professionals in a municipal office in S City, Japan; in total, 89 individuals who returned it were analyzed. Their knowledge of osteoporosis was assessed using the revised Osteoporosis Knowledge Test, its two subscales, and the Facts on Osteoporosis Quiz, translated into Japanese. To compare the level of knowledge between categories of selected factors, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test or the Kruskal–Wallis test was applied. The mean of correct answers ranged from 70 to 79%, depending on the scale. The knowledge level was significantly higher among registered dietitians than among public health nurses. Higher scores were significantly associated with past learning experience in off-the-job training, with having a family history of osteoporosis, and with having had a past osteoporosis test. Japanese public health professionals were likely to have moderate knowledge of osteoporosis. Several factors were implied to be associated with the knowledge level of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease characterized by low bone density and poor bone quality that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures. Serious consequences of fractures include disability, loss of independence, and death. Despite the availability of clinical tools to evaluate fracture risk and medications to reduce fracture risk, many or most patients at risk, even those with a recent fracture, are not being treated. This represents a large osteoporosis treatment gap that has reached a crisis level. Importantly, the treatment gap is not evenly distributed among populations of different race/ethnicity. Black women are less likely to have bone density testing when indicated, are less likely to be treated, and have worse outcomes after a fracture than White women. This is a review and update of race-based disparities and inequalities, with suggestions for interventions to optimize patient care.

Abstract
Introduction Osteoporosis is a chronic and progressive disease associated with gradual bone loss and elevated risk of fracture. Role of health care professional especially nurses in lowering burden of osteoporosis via patients and public education is critical. Current study conducted to evaluate knowledge and attitude regarding osteoporosis among the nurses in orthopedic wards and their experience with national clinical osteoporosis guideline. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from August to December 2016 among all nurses in orthopedic ward of hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. The 23- item self-administered scale consisted of knowledge and attitude questions were used. Moreover, data regarding participation in osteoporosis training courses and awareness of the national osteoporosis clinical guideline were collected as a measure of nurses’ experience with guideline. The gathered data were analyzed using SPSS (V. 16), student t-test was used to compare total knowledge and attitude scores between categorical demographic and professional data. Pearson test was used to calculate the correlation between total knowledge and attitude scores and years of practice. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results From total of 160 nurses, 143 of them completed the questionnaire (response rate: 89.3%). The total mean ± SD knowledge and attitude scores were 11.60 ± 3.10 and 3.47 ± 0.92 respectively. Six nurses (4.2%) had participated in osteoporosis training courses after graduation, and 39 (27.3%) had been aware of the national osteoporosis clinical guideline. Knowledge and attitude scores among nurses who practice in private hospitals was higher than those practices in the teaching hospitals. These differences were statistically significant based on student t-test. According to Pearson correlation coefficient, there was positive and significant correlation between nurses’ knowledge and attitude score (Correlation coefficient: 0.199, p-value = 0.037). Conclusion Our findings reveal that nurses’ knowledge and attitude regarding osteoporosis was not satisfactory. Most of them were not aware of national osteoporosis clinical guideline and had not participated in osteoporosis training courses after their graduation. We need more empowered nurses to lowering burden of osteoporosis and its consequences in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess knowledge of osteoporosis and its risk factors and to explore associations between knowledge and various sociodemographic factors in Indian adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. The Revised Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (OKT) was used to assess knowledge of osteoporosis. Four scores (OKT-total, range 0-32; OKT-exercise, range 0-20; OKT-nutrition, range 0-26; OKT-risk factors, range 0-14) were generated by giving 1 point to every correct answer and 0 points for incorrect or 'not known' answers. SETTING Tertiary-care hospital in Pune city, India.ParticipantsAdults aged 40-75 years (n 477; 234 males) enrolled through voluntary routine health checks and health camps. RESULTS Mean age of the study population was 54·6 (sd 9·5) years. Half the participants were aware of osteoporosis and could correctly define it. Women showed significantly higher median OKT-total and OKT-nutrition scores than men (P0·1). CONCLUSIONS Understanding about osteoporosis and its risk factors is low in the present cohort of Indian men and women. There is need to create awareness programmes aimed at both men and women especially targeting those with lower education, lower socio-economic status and no previous exposure to osteoporosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent yet preventable disease. Nurses can play a major role in the prevention of osteoporosis and preventive treatment of patients who have had an osteoporotic fracture. PURPOSE This study explored whether New Zealand orthopaedic nurses have the knowledge to provide osteoporosis prevention education, and also examined these nurses' perceptions of their role in the diagnosis and prevention of osteoporosis. METHODS A questionnaire assessing osteoporosis knowledge was sent to a convenience sample of orthopaedic nurses. Data were analyzed quantitatively for the knowledge component, and qualitatively for the nurses' perception of their role, perceived barriers, and educational preferences. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Findings reveal that New Zealand orthopaedic nurses have inadequate osteoporosis knowledge and this is a barrier to educating patients regarding osteoporosis. Adherence to published recommendations for the management of osteoporosis has been inconsistent. Confusion about who should lead osteoporosis prevention is evident and it seems that nurses play a passive role.

Abstract
A previous systematic review on osteoporosis knowledge published showed that only several studies investigated osteoporosis knowledge in health professionals, and it found that their knowledge was not as adequate and sufficient as it should be. Since then, studies published on osteoporosis knowledge among health professionals have also assessed and found that they still do not have adequate and sufficient osteoporosis knowledge. To increase and improve osteoporosis knowledge among health professionals, recommendations in osteoporosis education in the health professions, including the application of the cognitive load theory, online learning, problem-based learning, practical learning, simulation-based learning, interactive learning, and feedback are covered in order to ensure health professionals can have adequate and sufficient osteoporosis knowledge to best prevent and treat individuals with the disease.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Underdiagnosis of osteoporosis is common. This study investigated Swedish district nurses' perceptions of osteoporosis management. They perceived the condition as having low priority, and the consequences of this perception were insufficient awareness of the condition and perceptions of bone-specific medication as unsafe. They perceived, though, competency when working with fall prevention. INTRODUCTION Undertreatment of patients with osteoporosis is common. Sweden's medical care strategy dictates prioritisation of various conditions; while guidelines exist, osteoporosis is not prioritised. The aim of this study was to investigate district nurses' perceptions of osteoporosis management within Sweden's primary health care system. METHODS Four semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 13 female district nurses. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS The overall theme was perceiving osteoporosis management as ambiguous. The themes were perceiving barriers and perceiving opportunities. These subthemes were linked to perceiving barriers: (i) insufficient procedures, lack of time and not aware of the condition; (ii) insufficient knowledge about diagnosis and about fracture risk assessment tools; (iii) low priority condition and unclear responsibility for osteoporosis management; and (iv) bone-specific medication was sometimes perceived to be unsafe. These subthemes were linked to perceiving opportunities: (i) professional competency when discussing fall prevention in home visit programs, (ii) willingness to learn more about osteoporosis management, (iii) collaboration with other professionals and (iv) willingness to identify individuals at high risk of fracture. CONCLUSIONS Osteoporosis was reported, by the district nurses, to be a low-priority condition with consequences being unawareness of the condition, insufficient knowledge about bone-specific medications, fracture risk assessment tools and procedures. These may be some of the explanations for the undertreatment of osteoporosis. At the same time, the district nurses described competency performing the home visits, which emerged as an optimal opportunity to discuss fall prevention and to introduce FRAX with the aim to identify individuals at high risk of fracture.

Abstract
This study assessed a targeted continuing osteoporosis educational program and investigated awareness and prevention of osteoporosis in Chinese female pre-internship nurse students. A quasi-experimental study was conducted. The program was presented to 256 nurse students. The baseline knowledge score of the nurse students was low (9.78 ± 3.13). They had inadequate osteoporosis health beliefs, self-efficacy and related behaviors. The educational program significantly augmented osteoporosis knowledge (Student's paired t = -13.42, P < 0.001), total osteoporosis health beliefs (Student's paired t = -4.46, P < 0.001), and the subscale (P < 0.001) except for the perceived barriers to exercising and calcium intake. Participants showed a significant increase in self-efficacy (Student's paired t = -6.45, P < 0.001) post intervention. Those who completed the program were better prepared to prevent and manage osteoporosis. Additionally, nurse students became more concerned about bone health of family members, subjects and themselves because of attending the program. Results of this study reinforce the need for osteoporosis-related continuing education in nurse students before clinical internship.
