Abstract
This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the risk of subsequent autoimmune disease in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Asian population. Between 2002 and 2009, we enrolled 5273 patients with PTSD and 1:4 matched controls from the National Health Insurance Database of Taiwan, and followed up the patients until December 31, 2011, or death. The investigated autoimmune diseases included thyroiditis, lupus, rheumatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, Sjogren's syndrome, dermatomyositis, and polymyositis. The Cox regression model was used to estimate the risk of developing autoimmune diseases, with adjustment for demographics and psychiatric and medical comorbidities. Furthermore, we examined the psychiatric clinics utility of patients with PTSD indicating the severity of PTSD in association with autoimmune diseases. After adjusting for confounders, patients with PTSD had a 2.26-fold higher risk of developing any autoimmune diseases (reported as hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals: 1.82-2.80) than the controls. For specific autoimmune diseases, patients with PTSD had a 2.70-fold higher risk (1.98-3.68) of thyroiditis, a 2.95-fold higher risk (1.20-7.30) of lupus, and a 6.32-fold higher risk (3.44-11.60) of Sjogren's syndrome. Moreover, the PTSD severity was associated with the risk of autoimmune diseases in a dose-dependent manner. The patient with the highest psychiatric clinics utility was associated with an 8.23-fold higher risk (6.21-10.90) of any autoimmune diseases than the controls. Patients with PTSD had an increased risk of autoimmune diseases, and such risk was associated with the severity of PTSD in a dose-dependent manner. However, the present study did not provide a direct effect between PTSD and autoimmune diseases, but rather an association. Further studies are warranted to examine the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

Abstract
Proper thyroid function is essential to the developing brain, including dopamine neuron differentiation, growth, and maintenance. Stress across the lifespan impacts thyroid hormone signaling and anxiety disorders and depression have been associated with thyroid dysfunction (both hypo- and hyper-active). However, less is known about how stress during postnatal development impacts thyroid function and related brain development. Our previous work in mice demonstrated that early-life stress (ELS) transiently impinged on expression of a transcription factor in dopamine neurons, Otx2, shown to be regulated by thyroid hormones. We hypothesized that thyroid hormone signaling may link experience of ELS with transcriptional dysregulation within the dopaminergic midbrain, and ultimately behavior. Here, we find that ELS transiently increases thyroid-stimulating hormone levels (inversely related to thyroid signaling) in both male and female mice at P21, an effect which recovers by adolescence. We next tested whether transient treatment of ELS mice with synthetic thyroid hormone (levothyroxine, LT4) could ameliorate the impact of ELS on sensitivity to future stress, and on expression of genes related to dopamine neuron development and maintenance, thyroid signaling, and plasticity within the ventral tegmental area. Among male mice, but not females, juvenile LT4 treatment prevented hypersensitivity to adult stress. We also found that rescuing developmental deficits in thyroid hormone signaling after ELS restored levels of some genes altered directly by ELS, and prevented alterations in expression of other genes sensitive to the second hit of adult stress. These findings suggest that thyroid signaling mediates the deleterious impact of ELS on VTA development, and that temporary treatment of hypothyroidism after ELS may be sufficient to prevent future stress hypersensitivity.

Abstract
Humans have lived in a dynamic environment fraught with potential dangers for thousands of years. While fear and stress were crucial for the survival of our ancestors, today, they are mostly considered harmful factors, threatening both our physical and mental health. Trauma is a highly stressful, often life-threatening event or a series of events, such as sexual assault, war, natural disasters, burns, and car accidents. Trauma can cause pathological metaplasticity, leading to long-lasting behavioral changes and impairing an individual's ability to cope with future challenges. If an individual is vulnerable, a tremendously traumatic event may result in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The hypothalamus is critical in initiating hormonal responses to stressful stimuli via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Linked to the prefrontal cortex and limbic structures, especially the amygdala and hippocampus, the hypothalamus acts as a central hub, integrating physiological aspects of the stress response. Consequently, the hypothalamic functions have been attributed to the pathophysiology of PTSD. However, apart from the well-known role of the HPA axis, the hypothalamus may also play different roles in the development of PTSD through other pathways, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes, as well as by secreting growth hormone, prolactin, dopamine, and oxytocin. This review aims to summarize the current evidence regarding the neuroendocrine functions of the hypothalamus, which are correlated with the development of PTSD. A better understanding of the role of the hypothalamus in PTSD could help develop better treatments for this debilitating condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Results of modern research show a relationship between emotional stress and the occurrence of autoimmune diseases as a comorbidity. The authors use EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to treat trauma disorders. They wondered whether and to what extent this treatment also affects autoimmune processes. METHOD Parallel to the trauma-focused psychotherapy with EMDR, the thyroid hormone substitution dose was documented in patients with active Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis requiring substitution. Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis had already been diagnosed by a specialist and drug treatment had been initiated before starting outpatient psychotherapy. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION So far in five cases a decrease in autoimmune activity and a stability of the results in the follow-up between six months and one year could be observed. It is now necessary to examine whether these results can be confirmed in a larger number of patients and a diversity of therapists and whether these observations can be transferred to other somatic comorbidities.

Abstract
PURPOSE This review attempts to investigate the link between subclinical thyroid dysfunction (SCH) and major depressive disorder (MDD). It has been speculated that SCH may be related to MDD through an autoimmune mechanism. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was conducted in the PubMed database for relevant research and review articles. RESULTS There appears to be an association between an autoimmune mechanism, possibly involving the thyroid gland, and depressive disorders, but the available evidence is so far inconclusive. CONCLUSION Lifetime prevalence of depression is significantly higher in patients with SCH, a finding reflecting a possible effect of SCH in lowering the threshold for the emergence of MDD. The relationship between SCH and MDD is, however, not clear, with large and well-designed studies investigating possible links between reference-range thyroid hormone levels and MDD having as yet found no relation between the two.

Abstract
Environmental variations in early life influence brain development, making individuals more vulnerable to psychiatric and metabolic disorders. Early life stress (ELS) has a strong impact on the development of eating behavior. However, eating is a complex behavior, determined by an interaction between signals of energy homeostasis, neuronal circuits involved in its regulation, and circuits related to rewarding properties of the food. Although mechanisms underlying ELS-induced altered feeding behavior are not completely understood, evidence suggest that the effects of ELS on metabolic, mood, and emotional disorders, as well as reward system dysfunctions can contribute directly or indirectly to altered feeding behavior. The focus of this chapter is to discuss the effects of ELS on eating behavior and metabolism, considering different factors that control appetite such as energy homeostasis, hedonic properties of the food, emotional and cognitive status. After highlighting classic studies on the association between ELS and eating behavior alterations, we discuss how exposure to adversity can interact with genetics characteristics to predict variable outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis describing the association of thyroid function with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults. METHODS The authors conducted a comprehensive search from databases' inception to July 20, 2018. The meta-analysis included studies that reported mean values and standard deviation (SD) of thyroid hormone levels (thyroid-stimulating hormone [TSH], free thyroxine [FT4], free triiodothyronine [FT3], total T4 [TT4], and total T3 [TT3]) in patients with PTSD compared with controls. Five reviewers worked independently, in duplicate, to determine study inclusion, extract data, and assess risk of bias. The mean value and SD of the thyroid function tests were used to calculate the mean difference for each variable. Random-effects models for meta-analyses were applied. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 10 observational studies at low-to-moderate risk of bias. Studies included 674 adults (373 PTSD, 301 controls). The meta-analytic estimates showed higher levels of FT3 (+0.28 pg/mL; P = .001) and TT3 (+18.90 ng/dL; P = .005) in patients with PTSD compared to controls. There were no differences in TSH, FT4, or TT4 levels between groups. In the subgroup analysis, patients with combat-related PTSD still had higher FT3 (+0.36 pg/mL; P = .0004) and higher TT3 (+31.62 ng/dL; P<.00001) compared with controls. Conversely, patients with non-combat-related PTSD did not have differences in FT3 or TT3 levels compared with controls. CONCLUSION There is scarce evidence regarding the association of thyroid disorders with PTSD. These findings add to the growing literature suggesting that thyroid function changes may be associated with PTSD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abnormal thyroid function is prevalent among women and has been linked to increased risk of chronic disease. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to thyroid dysfunction in some studies; however, the results have been inconsistent. Thus, we evaluated trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms in relation to incident thyroid dysfunction in a large longitudinal cohort of civilian women. METHODS We used data from 45 992 women from the ongoing Nurses' Health Study II, a longitudinal US cohort study that began in 1989. In 2008, history of trauma and PTSD were assessed with the Short Screening Scale for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, PTSD, and incident thyroid dysfunction was determined by participants' self-report in biennial questionnaires of physician-diagnosed hypothyroidism and Graves' hyperthyroidism. The study period was from 1989 to 2013. Proportional hazard models were used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident hypothyroidism and Graves' hyperthyroidism. RESULTS In multivariable-adjusted models, we found significant associations for PTSD only with hypothyroidism [p-trend <0.001; trauma with no PTSD symptoms, 1.08 (95% CI 1.02-1.15); 1-3 PTSD symptoms, 1.12 (95% CI 1.04-1.21); 4-5 PTSD symptoms, 1.23 (95% CI 1.13-1.34); and 6-7 PTSD symptoms, 1.26 (95% CI 1.14-1.40)]. PTSD was not associated with risk of Graves' hyperthyroidism (p-trend = 0.34). Associations were similar in sensitivity analyses restricted to outcomes with onset after 2008, when PTSD was assessed. CONCLUSIONS PTSD was associated with higher risk of hypothyroidism in a dose-dependent fashion. Highlighted awareness for thyroid dysfunction may be especially important in women with PTSD.

Abstract
Neonatal stress contributes to the development of obesity and has long-lasting effects on elements of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. Given the importance of thyroid hormones in metabolic regulation, we studied the effects of maternal separation and a high-fat/high-carbohydrate diet (HFC), offered from puberty or adulthood, on HPT axis activity of adult male and female Wistar rats. Pups were non-handled (NH) or maternally separated (MS) 3 h/day at postnatal days (Pd) 2-21. In a first experiment, at Pd60, rats had access to chow or an HFC diet (cookies, peanuts, chow) for 1 month. Male and female NH and MS rats that consumed the HFC diet increased their caloric intake, body weight, and serum insulin levels; fat weight increased in all groups except in MS males, and serum leptin concentration increased only in females. Mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) Pomc expression increased in NH-HFC females and Npy decreased in NH-HFC males. MS males showed insulinemia and hypercortisolemia that was attenuated by the HFC diet. The HPT axis activity response to an HFC diet was sex-specific; expression of MBH thyrotropin-releasing hormone-degrading ectoenzyme (Trhde) increased in NH and MS males; serum TSH concentration decreased in NH males, and T4 increased in NH females. In a second experiment, rats were fed chow or an HFC diet from Pd30 or 60 until Pd160 and exposed to 1 h restraint before sacrifice. Regardless of neonatal stress, age of diet exposition, or sex, the HFC diet increased body and fat weight and serum leptin concentration; it induced insulinemia in males, but in females only in Pd30 rats. The HFC diet's capacity to curtail the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis response to restraint was impaired in MS males. In restrained rats, expression of Trh in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, Dio2 and Trhde in MBH, and serum thyroid hormone concentration were altered differently depending on sex, age of diet exposition, and neonatal stress. In conclusion, metabolic alterations associated to an HFC-diet-induced obesity are affected by sex or time of exposition, while various parameters of the HPT axis activity are additionally altered by MS, pointing to the complex interplay that these developmental influences exert on HPT axis activity in adult rats.

Abstract
Children whose mothers experienced childhood abuse are more likely to suffer various neurodevelopmental deficits. Whether an association exists specifically for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is unknown. We examined the association of maternal experience of childhood abuse with ADHD in offspring, assessed by maternal report of diagnosis and validated with the ADHD Rating Scale-IV in a subsample, in the Nurses' Health Study II (n = 49,497 mothers; n = 7,607 case offspring; n = 102,151 control offspring). We examined whether 10 adverse perinatal circumstances (e.g., prematurity, smoking) or socioeconomic factors accounted for a possible association. Exposure to abuse was associated with greater prevalence of ADHD in offspring (8.7% of offspring of women exposed to severe abuse vs. 5.5% of offspring of women not abused, P = 0.0001) and with greater risk for ADHD when the model was adjusted for demographic factors (male offspring, risk ratio (RR) = 1.6, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.3, 1.9; female offspring, RR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.7, 3.0). After adjustment for perinatal factors, the association of maternal childhood abuse with ADHD in offspring was slightly attenuated (male offspring, RR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.2, 1.8; female offspring, RR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.6, 2.8). We identified an association between maternal experience of childhood abuse and risk for ADHD in offspring, which was not explained by several important perinatal risk factors or socioeconomic status.

Abstract
Objective: Fatigue is a core feature of functional somatic syndromes (FSS). Fatigue is also prominent in patients with thyroid diseases, which is unsurprising given the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in regulating physiological energy demands. Research in healthy women has shown that early life adversity is linked with alterations in the HPT axis. In view of the substantial prevalence of early life adversity in patients with FSS, our aim was to investigate whether HPT functioning is related to (a) fatigue, and (b) early life adversity in these patients. Methods:N = 33 female patients with FSS and n = 30 age-matched controls were recruited. Fasting morning blood samples were taken to determine thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (fT3), and thyroxine (fT4). General, physical, and mental fatigue were measured via the multidimensional fatigue inventory (MFI). Early life adversity was measured using the childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ). Results: Patients with FSS did not differ from controls in any thyroid parameters (all p > 0.672). However, the lower the patients' TSH and the higher their fT4, the greater was their general (β = -0.32, p = 0.064; β = 0.35, p = 0.038) and physical (β = -0.47, p = 0.007; β = 0.32, p = 0.077) fatigue. In addition, emotional neglect (β = -0.32, p = 0.057), physical neglect (β = -0.60, p = 0.001), physical abuse (β = -0.47, p = 0.015), and sexual abuse (β = -0.40, p = 0.026) were linked with lower TSH. Conclusion: The lower TSH and the higher fT4, the more fatigue was reported by patients with FSS. In addition, lower TSH was linked with more early life adversity. Larger, prospective studies are warranted to determine whether HPT functioning may be a mediating pathway between early life adversity and fatigue in FSS.

Abstract
Pregnancy and postpartum are periods of high susceptibility to major depression (MD) and other mood disorders. The peripartum period is also a time of considerable changes in the levels of hormones, including cortisol, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), prolactin, gonadotropins, and gonadal steroids. To investigate the relationship between mood and hormonal changes during and after pregnancy, we reviewed published reports of hormonal measures during this time frame, searched via PubMed and Web of Science. Studies were included if women in the antepartum or postpartum periods were clinically diagnosed with MD, and if there were repeated measures of cortisol, TSH, or prolactin. For these three hormones, the numbers of human studies that met these criteria were 15, 7, and 3, respectively. Convergent findings suggest that morning cortisol is reduced in pregnant and postpartum women with MD. Evidence did not support changes in TSH as a marker of MD during the peripartum period, and evidence for changes in prolactin in peripartum MD was equivocal. Aside from reduced morning cortisol in peripartum women with MD, definitive evidence for an association between specific hormonal fluctuations and mood disorders in the peripartum period remains elusive.

Abstract
This study evaluates the feasibility of enrolling and retaining perinatal immigrant and U.S.-born Latinas in a laboratory-based study that includes the collection of biomarkers implicated in the development of postpartum depression. This prospective study followed Latinas from third trimester of pregnancy to 12 weeks postpartum. Women were enrolled during pregnancy and interviewed at 4, 8 and 12 weeks postpartum. Demographic information, depression status and breastfeeding practices were ascertained using validated Spanish- and English-measures. Blood samples were collected at the 8-week postpartum laboratory visit during infant feeding and pain testing. Feasibility was demonstrated with 85 % retention of the original 34 prenatal women enrolled in the study. The majority (88 %) of women enrolled attended the 8-week laboratory visit regardless of depression status. This is the first study to demonstrate feasibility of enrolling and retaining depressed and nondepressed perinatal immigrant and U.S.-born Latinas in biomedical research.

Abstract
The critical importance of thyroid hormones for fetal development is well established. The developing fetus is dependent on the mother for adequate thyroid hormone supply, and maternal thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy may result in suboptimal fetal development. Because exposure to childhood maltreatment (CM) has been associated with thyroid dysfunction in the non-pregnant state, we sought to test the hypothesis that exposure to CM may represent a risk factor for the development of maternal hypothyroidism in pregnancy. The study was conducted in a healthy cohort of 102 pregnant mothers who were followed across the entire course of pregnancy. At each trimester thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) were measured in maternal serum. Experience of CM was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. After adjusting for potentially confounding variables, CM exposure was associated with increased TSH concentrations across pregnancy (F1,94.6=11.52, p=0.001) and with a 4- to 7-fold increased risk of TSH levels above the trimester-specific clinical cut-off values. Women with clinically elevated TSH concentrations did not differ in fT4 concentrations from women with normal TSH concentrations (p>0.1), suggesting subclinical hypothyroidism. Our findings suggest that there is a substantial and clinically relevant increased risk for thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy among women exposed to abuse or neglect in their childhood. This could potentially have adverse consequences for fetal brain development. Thus, these findings highlight the critical importance of considering CM exposure as a potential risk factor for (subclinical) hypothyroidism in pregnancy.

Abstract
Despite the increasing amount of evidence suggesting a relationship between depression and subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH), the exact mechanism underlying this relationship remains unclear. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the roles of plasma Nesfatin-1 levels and dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes in the comorbidity of depression and SCH. Dysfunctions of the HPA and HPT axes were detected by measuring plasma corticosterone and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations, respectively. Subjects in the patient group were selected from patients hospitalized at the Anhui Mental Health Center, and subjects in the control group were recruited from healthy volunteers. Healthy control subjects were matched to the patients in terms of weight and body mass index. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale was administered to both the groups. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method was used to measure plasma Nesfatin-1, corticosterone, and TSH levels. A radioimmunoassay kit was used for the measurement of the plasma-free triiodothyronine and plasma-free thyroxine. The results showed that the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores and average Nesfatin-1, corticosterone, and TSH levels were significantly higher in depressed patients with SCH than in the control group. Moreover, positive relationships were observed between Nesfatin-1 levels and the concentrations of corticosterone (r=0.626, P<0.001) and TSH (r=0.229, P=0.036) in depressed patients with SCH. These findings indicate that Nesfatin-1 is involved in the comorbidity of depression and SCH, and the mechanism underlying this involvement might be related to the dysfunction of the HPA and HPT axes.

Abstract
Hypo- and hyperthyroid states, as well as functional abnormalities in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis have been associated with psychiatric conditions like anxiety and depression. However, the nature of this relationship is poorly understood since it is difficult to ascertain the thyroid status of the brain in humans. Data from animal models indicate that the brain exhibits efficient homeostatic mechanisms that maintain local levels of the active thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine (T3) within a narrow range. To better understand the consequences of peripheral and central thyroid status for mood-related behaviors, we used a mouse model of type 3 deiodinase (DIO3) deficiency (Dio3 -/- mouse). This enzyme inactivates thyroid hormone and is highly expressed in the adult central nervous system. Adult Dio3 -/- mice exhibit elevated levels of T3-dependent gene expression in the brain, despite peripheral hypothyroidism as indicated by low circulating levels of thyroxine and T3. Dio3 -/- mice of both sexes exhibit hyperactivity and significantly decreased anxiety-like behavior, as measured by longer time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus maze and in the light area of the light/dark box. During the tail suspension, they stayed immobile for a significantly shorter time than their wild-type littermates, suggesting decreased depression-like behavior. These results indicate that increased thyroid hormone in the brain, not necessarily in peripheral tissues, correlates with hyperactivity and with decreases in anxiety and depression-like behaviors. Our results also underscore the importance of DIO3 as a determinant of behavior by locally regulating the brain levels of thyroid hormone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postpartum depression represents an increasingly recognized psychiatric condition in new mothers, and even more so in recent years as its detection has improved. AIMS This study aimed to reveal those maternal and perinatal parameters that are significantly associated with increased likelihood of postpartum depression in delivering mothers from our region. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 163 women between 6 and 8 weeks after delivery. Postnatal depression was assessed by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) using a cut-off of >12. RESULTS Postnatal depression was detected in 39 (23.93%) new mothers. The preterm delivery [odds ratio (OR) 7.233; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.631-32.078; p = 0.009], presence of complications during pregnancy (OR 4.579; 95% CI 1.314-15.953; p = 0.017) and being primiparous (OR 3.388; 95% CI 1.430-8.025; p = 0.006) have been associated with an increased likelihood of subsequent postpartum depression. Anxiety traits of personality were the most represented in depressive mothers. CONCLUSIONS Postpartum depression is a frequent psychiatric condition in new mothers from our region. These results outline the critical role of mother's profile of personality which in a particular context of perinatal events could result in an increased likelihood of postpartum depression requiring a multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract
Perinatal mental illness has a significant implication on maternal health, birth outcomes, and the offspring's development. Prevalence estimates of perinatal psychiatric illnesses range widely, with substantial heterogeneity in different population studies, with a lower prevalence rate in high- rather than low- or middle-income countries. Because of the potential negative impact on maternal and child outcomes and the potential lability of these disorders, the perinatal period is a critical time to identify psychiatric illnesses. Thus, obstetricians and midwives play a crucial role in assessing women's mental health needs and to refer identified women promptly for multidisciplinary specialist assessment. However, there is still limited evidence on best practice assessment and management policies during pregnancy and postpartum. This review focuses on the prevalence of common perinatal mental disorders and antenatal screening policies to identify women at risk. The effect of these conditions and their management on pregnancy, fetal outcomes, and child development are discussed.

Abstract
Childhood abuse is a powerful risk factor for developing postpartum depression in adulthood, and recently it has been associated to thyroid dysfunction in postpartum depressive women. The purpose of this study was to investigated the effects of childhood abuse on thyroid status and depressive symptomatology in two hundred and thirty-six (n=236) postpartum women 24-48h after delivery. The Early-Trauma-Inventory Self-Report was used to assess the presence of childhood abuse and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) to evaluate depressive symptomatology (EPDS≥11). Free thyroxin (fT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were measured. Thyroid dysfunction (TD) was defined as altered TSH or TSH and fT4. Socio-demographic, reproductive, and psychopathological variables were also collected. Multivariate analysis shows that childhood physical abuse increases by four times the risk for TD (OR: 3.95, 95% CI: 1.23-12.71) and five times the risk for depressive symptomatology (OR: 5.45, 95% CI: 2.17-13.66) in the earlier postpartum. Our findings suggest that women with history of childhood physical abuse are particularly at-risk for thyroid dysfunction and depressive symptomatology 24-48h after delivery. The assessment of childhood abuse in the perinatal period is important to identify women at-risk for physical and mental health problems in this period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal depression during the peripartum period has an incidence of about 13%. Individuals with specific genetic predispositions are more vulnerable to stressful life events suggesting that exploration of gene-environmental pathways might facilitate the identification of risk factors for peripartum depression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of stressful life events in combination with the serotonin transporter gene 5-HTTLPR polymorphism on peripartum depressive symptoms. METHODS In a non-psychiatric cohort of 419 Caucasians, the severity of depression was assessed prospectively during pregnancy (3rd trimester) and the postpartum period (2-3 days and 6-8 months) using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Satisfaction with the partner and exposure to negative life events were evaluated using self-report questionnaires and the genotype of the 5-HTTLPR was assessed. Repeated measures generalized linear models were used to investigate the gene-environment interaction on depressive symptoms across late pregnancy and the postpartum period. RESULTS The 5-HTTLPR S-allele carrier status predicted late postpartum depressive symptom severity only in the presence of negative life events. This interaction was not observed for depressive symptoms during the 3rd trimester or the early postpartum. In addition, S-allele carrier status increased the negative effects of dissatisfaction with the current partner on depressive symptoms in the late postpartum period. CONCLUSIONS In this non-psychiatric cohort, the 5-HTTLPR interacts with both lifetime and current stressors to influence depressive symptoms in the late post partum period. These findings could have clinical implications by allowing identification of women at higher risk for developing postpartum depressive symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Personality and childhood trauma may affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, evidence for an association with metabolic risk factors for CVD is limited and ambiguous. Moreover, despite their interrelatedness, personality and childhood trauma were not yet studied simultaneously. Therefore, we aimed to explore whether personality and childhood trauma are correlates of metabolic risk factors. METHODS Among 2755 participants of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), we investigated through linear regression models whether Big Five personality traits (i.e., extraversion, openness, agreeableness, neuroticism and conscientiousness) and childhood trauma type (i.e., emotional neglect, and psychological, physical and sexual abuse) were correlates of metabolic risk factors (i.e., lipids, waist circumference (WC), glucose and blood pressure). Basic covariates (i.e., age, sex and income level), lifestyle, severity of depressive symptoms and years of education were taken into account. RESULTS Openness was the most robust favorable correlate, and sexual abuse was the most robust unfavorable correlate of lipids and WC, and of overall metabolic risk (β=-.070; p<.001 and β=.035; p=.04, respectively). CONCLUSIONS People with a low openness trait and those who experienced childhood sexual abuse are at higher risk of dyslipidemia and abdominal obesity.

Abstract
The aims were to study the validity and test-retest reliability of the Early Trauma Inventory-Self Report (ETI-SR) and its short-form (ETI-SF), which retrospectively assess different childhood trauma, in a sample of Spanish postpartum women. A total of 227 healthy postpartum women completed the ETI-SR and ETI-SF. The longitudinal, expert, all data procedure was used as the external criterion for the assessment of childhood trauma. The ETI-SR and ETI-SF were also administered to a sample of 102 postpartum depressive women (DSM-IV) and the results were compared with those of the healthy postpartum sample. The area under the curve values of the ETI-SR and ETI-SF were 0.77 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.71-0.84) and 0.78 (95% CI, 0.72-0.85), the internal consistencies of the 2 scales were 0.79 and 0.72, and the intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.92 (95% CI, 0.80-0.97) and 0.91 (95% CI, 0.78-0.96), all respectively. The ETI-SR and ETI-SF had higher test-retest reliability on all subscales. The ETI-SR and ETI-SF are shown to be valid and reliable instruments for assessing childhood trauma in postpartum women.
