Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research showed that perceived stress was strongly linked to depression, little is known about the underlying neurological mechanism of different depression subtypes with different perceived stress, and there is currently no classification of stress-based subtypes of depression. This study aimed at using fNIRS to uncover the neuromechanism of confirmed and suspected depression with different perceived stress, hence providing neurobiological evidence for the classification of stress-based depression subtypes. It is a significant target for effective depression treatment. METHOD The study included 551 young adults: 256 healthy control individuals, 62 confirmed depression patients, and 233 suspected depression participants. A 53-channel fNIRS imaging system was used to gather the average oxyhemoglobin level in the PFC during EAMT. RESULTS Compared with HC, confirmed and suspected depression group show significant lower hemodynamic activation in right frontal lobe of frame under high loss of control. Confirmed depression with high sense of tension had higher activation than with high loss of control in right dlPFC, while for suspected depression, the activation with high sense of tension was lower than with high loss of control in left broca's area (BA) and front polar cortex (FPC). CONCLUSION All perceived stresses were not equal in their impacts on different depression types. The confirmed and suspected depression were two different depression subtypes sharing distinct activation pattern under different perceived stress in PFC, which may be an important target for stress-linked psychopathology. Depression can be further classified precisely based on stress. fNIRS can provide neuroimaging evidence for classification of stress-based depression subtypes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) previous studies have found that activation differences in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during an autobiographical memory task (AMT) under the condition of different emotional valences may be neurophysiological markers of depression and different depression subtypes. Additionally, compared with non-anxious depression, anxious depression presents abnormal hemodynamic activation in the DLPFC. This study aimed to use fNIRS to investigate hemodynamic activation in the DLPFC of depression patients with and without anxiety during AMT triggered by different emotional valence stimuli. METHODS We recruited 194 patients with depression (91 with non-anxious depression, 103 with anxious depression) and 110 healthy controls from Chinese college students. A 53-channel fNIRS was used to detect cerebral hemodynamic differences in the three groups during AMT. RESULTS The results showed that: (1) the activation of oxy-Hb in the left DLPFC was significantly higher under positive emotional valence than under negative emotional valence for healthy controls and patients with non-anxious depression, while there was no significant difference between positive and negative emotional valence observed in response to anxious depression; and (2) Oxy-Hb activation under negative emotional valence was significantly higher in the anxious depression group than in the non-anxious depression group. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that the hemodynamic hyperactivation of negative emotional valence in the left DLPFC may be due to the neurophysiological differences between anxious and non-anxious patients with depression.

Abstract
Longitudinal studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) focused on adolescent internalizing psychopathology are scarce and have mostly investigated standardized treatment effects on functional connectivity (FC) of the full amygdala. The role of amygdala subregions and large resting-state networks had yet to be elucidated, and treatment is in practice often personalized. Here, longitudinal FC development of amygdala subregions and whole-brain networks are investigated in a clinically representative sample. Treatment-naïve adolescents with clinical depression and comorbid anxiety who started care-as-usual (n = 23; INT) and healthy controls (n = 24; HC) participated in rs-fMRI scans and questionnaires at baseline (before treatment) and after three months. Changes between and within groups over time in FC of the laterobasal amygdala (LBA), centromedial amygdala (CMA) and whole-brain networks derived from independent component analysis (ICA) were investigated. Groups differed significantly in FC development of the right LBA to the postcentral gyrus and the left LBA to the frontal pole. Within INT, FC to the frontal pole and postcentral gyrus changed over time while changes in FC of the right LBA were also linked to symptom change. No significant interactions were observed when considering FC from CMA bilateral seeds or within ICA-derived networks. Results in this cohort suggest divergent longitudinal development of FC from bilateral LBA subregions in adolescents with internalizing disorders compared to healthy peers, possibly reflecting nonspecific treatment effects. Moreover, associations were found with symptom change. These results highlight the importance of differentiation of amygdala subregions in neuroimaging research in adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We decided to investigate the changes of global and local connectivity in anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis patients based on eigenvector centrality (EC) and regional homogeneity (ReHo). We sought new biomarkers to identify the patients based on multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA). METHODS Functional MRI (fMRI) was performed on all participants. EC, ReHo and MVPA were used to analyze the fMRI images. The correlation between the global or local connectivity and neuropsychology tests was detected. RESULTS The MoCA scores of the patients were lower than those of the healthy controls (HCs), while the HAMD24 and HAMA scores of the patients were higher than those of the HCs. Increased EC values in the right calcarine (CAL.R) and decreased EC values in the right putamen (PUT.R) distinguished these subjects with anti-NMDAR encephalitis from HCs. The higher ReHo values in the left postcentral gyrus (PoCG.L) were detected in the patients. The correlation analysis showed that the EC values in the PUT.R were negatively correlated with HAMD24 and HAMA scores, while the ReHo values in the PoCG.L were negatively correlated with MoCA scores. Better classification performance was reached in the EC-based classifier (AUC = 0.80), while weaker classification performance was achieved in the ReHo-based classifier (AUC = 0.74) or the classifier based on EC and ReHo (AUC = 0.74). The brain areas with large weights were located in the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, cerebellum and basal ganglia. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that abnormal global and local connectivity may play an important part in the pathophysiological mechanism of neuropsychiatric symptoms in the anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients. The EC-based classifier may be better than the ReHo-based classifier in identifying anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxious depression (AD) is a common subtype of major depressive disorder (MDD). Neuroimaging studies of AD have revealed inconsistent and heterogeneous brain alterations with the use of single-model methods. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the pathogenesis of AD using multi-model imaging analyses to obtain more homogeneous and robust results. METHODS One hundred and eighty-two patients with MDD and 64 matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to estimate the gray matter volume (GMV) of all subjects. The GMV differences between the AD and non-anxious depression (NAD) participants were used as regions of interest (ROIs) for subsequent resting state functional connectivity (rs-FC) analyses. Correlation analysis was used to evaluate the associations between clinical symptoms and abnormal function in specific brain areas. RESULTS Decreased GMV in the medial frontal gyrus (MFG) and the superior frontal gyrus (SFG) was observed in the AD group compared to the NAD group. Taking the MFG and SFG as ROIs, the rs-FC analysis revealed decreased FC between the left SFG and left temporal pole and between the left SFG and right MFG in the AD group compared to the NAD group. Finally, the FC between the left SFG and left temporal pole was negatively correlated with HAMD-17 scores in the AD group. CONCLUSION By combining the GMV and rs-FC models, this study revealed that structural and functional disruption of the affective network may be an important pathophysiology underlying AD. The structural impairment may serve as the foundation of the functional impairment.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders (ADs) are a group of prevalent and destructive mental illnesses, but the current understanding of their underlying neuropathology is still unclear. Employing voxel-based morphometry (VBM), previous studies have demonstrated several common brain regions showing grey matter volume (GMV) abnormalities. However, contradictory results have been reported among these studies. Considering that different subtypes of ADs exhibit common core symptoms despite different diagnostic criteria, and previous meta-analyses have found common core GMV-altered brain regions in ADs, the present research aimed to combine the results of individual studies to identify common GMV abnormalities in ADs. Therefore, we first performed a systematic search in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science on studies investigating GMV differences between patients with ADs and healthy controls (HCs). Then, the anisotropic effect-size signed differential mapping (AES-SDM) was applied in this meta-analysis. A total of 24 studies (including 25 data sets) were included in the current study, and 906 patients with ADs and 1003 HCs were included. Compared with the HCs, the patients with ADs showed increased GMV in the left superior parietal gyrus, right angular gyrus, left precentral gyrus, and right lingual gyrus, and decreased GMV in the bilateral insula, bilateral thalamus, left caudate, and right putamen. In conclusion, the current study has identified some abnormal GMV brain regions that are related to the pathological mechanisms of anxiety disorders. These findings could contribute to a better understanding of the underlying neuropathology of ADs.

Abstract
The current study is the first meta-analysis to examine grey matter volume (GMV) changes in adolescents and across the lifespan in major depressive disorder (MDD). Seed-based d mapping-with permutation of subject images (SDM-PSI) has advantages over previous coordinate-based meta-analytical methods (CBMA), such as reducing bias (via the MetaNSUE algorithm) and including non-statistically significant unreported effects. SDM-PSI was used to analyze 105 whole-brain GMV voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies comparing 6,530 individuals with MDD versus 6,821 age-matched healthy controls (HC). A laterality effect was observed in which adults with MDD showed lower GMV than adult HC in left fronto-temporo-parietal structures (superior temporal gyrus, insula, Rolandic operculum, and inferior frontal gyrus). However, these abnormalities were not statistically significant for adolescent MDD versus adolescent HC. Instead, adolescent MDD showed lower GMV than adult MDD in right temporo-parietal structures (angular gyrus and middle temporal gyrus). These regional differences may be used as potential biomarkers to predict and monitor treatment outcomes as well as to choose the most effective treatments in adolescents versus adults. Finally, due to the paucity of youth, older adult, and longitudinal studies, future studies should attempt to replicate these GMV findings and examine whether they correlate with treatment response and illness severity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior research has demonstrated that the brains of adolescents with depression exhibit distinct structural alterations. However, preliminary studies have documented the pathophysiological changes in certain brain regions, such as the cerebellum, highlighting a need for further research to support the current understanding of this disease.
AIM To study brain changes in depressed adolescents.
METHODS This study enrolled 34 adolescents with depression and 34 age-, sex-, and education-level-matched healthy control (HC) individuals. Structural and functional alterations were identified when comparing the brains of these two participant groups through voxel-based morphometry and cerebral blood flow (CBF) analysis, respectively. Associations between identified brain alterations and the severity of depressive symptoms were explored through Pearson correlation analyses.
RESULTS The cerebellum, superior frontal gyrus, cingulate gyrus, pallidum, middle frontal gyrus, angular gyrus, thalamus, precentral gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, and supplementary motor areas of adolescents with depression showed an increase in brain volume compared to HC individuals. These patients with depression further presented with a pronounced drop in CBF in the left pallidum (group = 98, and peak t = - 4.4324), together with increased CBF in the right percental gyrus (PerCG) (group = 90, and peak t = 4.5382). In addition, 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores were significantly correlated with the increased volume in the opercular portion of the left inferior frontal gyrus (r = - 0.5231, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION The right PerCG showed structural and CBF changes, indicating that research on this part of the brain could offer insight into the pathophysiological causes of impaired cognition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gray matter morphometry studies have lent seminal insights into the etiology of mental illness. Existing research has primarily focused on adults and then, typically on a single disorder. Examining brain characteristics in late childhood, when the brain is preparing to undergo significant adolescent reorganization and various forms of serious psychopathology are just first emerging, may allow for a unique and highly important perspective of overlapping and unique pathogenesis. METHODS A total of 8645 youth were recruited as part of the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development study. Magnetic resonance imaging scans were collected, and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), depressive, and anxiety symptoms were assessed three times over a 2-year period. Cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume were used to predict baseline symptomatology and symptom progression over time. RESULTS Some features could possibly signal common vulnerability, predicting progression across forms of psychopathology (e.g. superior frontal and middle temporal regions). However, there was a specific predictive value for emerging PLEs (lateral occipital and precentral thickness), anxiety (parietal thickness/area and cingulate), and depression (e.g. parahippocampal and inferior temporal). CONCLUSION Findings indicate common and distinct patterns of vulnerability for varying forms of psychopathology are present during late childhood, before the adolescent reorganization, and have direct relevance for informing novel conceptual models along with early prevention and intervention efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gray matter volume (GMV) alterations in several emotion-related brain areas are implicated in mood disorders, but findings have been inconsistent in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 35 region-of-interest (ROI) and 18 whole-brain voxel-based morphometry (VBM) MRI studies in adolescent MDD and adolescent BD, and indirectly compared the results in the two groups. The effects of age, sex, and other demographic and clinical scale scores were explored using meta-regression analysis. RESULTS In the ROI meta-analysis, right putamen volume was decreased in adolescents with MDD, while bilateral amygdala volume was decreased in adolescents with BD compared to healthy controls (HC). In the whole-brain VBM meta-analysis, GMV was increased in right middle frontal gyrus and decreased in left caudate in adolescents with MDD compared to HC, while in adolescents with BD, GMV was increased in left superior frontal gyrus and decreased in limbic regions compared with HC. MDD vs BD comparison revealed volume alteration in the prefrontal-limbic system. LIMITATION Different clinical features limit the comparability of the samples, and small sample size and insufficient clinical details precluded subgroup analysis or meta-regression analyses of these variables. CONCLUSIONS Distinct patterns of GMV alterations in adolescent MDD and adolescent BD could help to differentiate these two populations and provide potential diagnostic biomarkers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxious depression is a serious mental disorder characterized by comorbidity of anxiety and depression, and its symptoms are similar to those of non-anxious depression. This study aimed to use functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a tool to distinguish between patients with anxious and non-anxious depression based on differences in hemodynamic changes in the right prefrontal cortex during the verbal fluency task. It is helpful to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the two disorders to further promote their therapeutic effect and prognosis. METHODS A total of 105 subjects, comprising 39 patients with anxious depression, 32 patients with non-anxious depression, and 32 healthy controls, were evaluated using 53-channel fNIRS and the Depression and Anxiety Clinical Scale. RESULTS Hemodynamic activation was significantly enhanced in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and right frontopole cortex (FPC) in the anxious depressed group compared with the non-anxious depressed and healthy groups. LIMITATIONS First, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to evaluate the scores of anxiety and depression among the three groups in our study. Different scales may result in different research results. Therefore, other scales (HAM, the Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale, or the Beck Depression Inventory) should be used for further verification. Second, although all the samples we have chosen were patients with the diagnosis of anxious depression or no-anxious depression, we did not distinguish between different severity of anxious depression or no-anxious depression. Third, pure anxiety was not included as the control condition in our study. CONCLUSIONS There are significant differences in activation patterns of the right DLPFC and right FPC areas between patients with and without anxious depression. Moreover, the right FPC area is promising as a brain region to assess the severity of anxious depression. fNIRS may be a potential tool to improve diagnostic accuracy for both disorders.

Abstract
Internalizing disorders encompass anxiety, fear and depressive disorders, which exhibit overlap at both conceptual and symptom levels. Given that a neurobiological evaluation is lacking, we conducted a Seed-based D-Mapping comparative meta-analysis including coordinates as well as original statistical maps to determine common and disorder-specific gray matter volume alterations in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), fear-related anxiety disorders (FAD, i.e., social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, panic disorder) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Results showed that GAD exhibited disorder-specific altered volumes relative to FAD including decreased volumes in left insula and lateral/medial prefrontal cortex as well as increased right putamen volume. Both GAD and MDD showed decreased prefrontal volumes compared to controls and FAD. While FAD showed less robust alterations in lingual gyrus compared to controls, this group presented intact frontal integrity. No shared structural abnormalities were found. Our study is the first to provide meta-analytic evidence for distinct neuroanatomical abnormalities underlying the pathophysiology of anxiety-, fear-related and depressive disorders. These findings may have implications for determining promising target regions for disorder-specific neuromodulation interventions (e.g. transcranial magnetic stimulation or neurofeedback).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite its morbidity and mortality, the neurobiology of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in adolescents and the impact of treatment on this neurobiology is poorly understood. METHODS Using automatic segmentation in FreeSurfer, we examined brain magnetic resonance imaging baseline volumetric differences among healthy adolescents (n = 30), adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) (n = 19), and adolescents with TRD (n = 34) based on objective antidepressant treatment rating criteria. A pooled subsample of adolescents with TRD were treated with 6 weeks of active (n = 18) or sham (n = 7) 10-Hz transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Ten of the adolescents treated with active TMS were part of an open-label trial. The other adolescents treated with active (n = 8) or sham (n = 7) were participants from a randomized controlled trial. RESULTS Adolescents with TRD and adolescents with MDD had decreased total amygdala (TRD and MDD: -5%, P = .032) and caudal anterior cingulate cortex volumes (TRD: -3%, P = .030; MDD: -.03%, P = .041) compared with healthy adolescents. Six weeks of active TMS increased total amygdala volumes (+4%, P < .001) and the volume of the stimulated left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (+.4%, P = .026) in adolescents with TRD. CONCLUSIONS Amygdala volumes were reduced in this sample of adolescents with MDD and TRD. TMS may normalize this volumetric finding, raising the possibility that TMS has neurostructural frontolimbic effects in adolescents with TRD. TMS also appears to have positive effects proximal to the site of stimulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is accompanied by alterations in grey matter volume. However, the biological processes associated with regional structural perturbations remain elusive. METHODS We applied integrative omics analysis to investigate specialized transcriptome signatures and translational determinants associated with regional grey matter variations in 2737 MDD patients relative to 3098 controls by summarizing the results from gene co-expression network analysis of Allen human brain transcriptome profiles in six donors, enrichment analysis of gene-sets and cellular structure from rodents and mediation analysis of BrainSpan proteome profile in six donors. RESULTS We found convergent alterations of grey matter volume in MDD were associated with transcriptome profiles enriched for synaptic transmission, metabolism, immune processes and transmembrane transport. Genes with abnormal expression in post-mortem tissue in MDD were also associated with transcriptome signatures. Further gene co-expression network and enrichment analysis of MDD-related genes in these signatures revealed the modules with higher neuronal expression were enriched in the medial temporal cortex and temporo-parietal junction with genes differentially associated with neuronal development and metabolism. Also, the modules with higher non-neuronal (e.g. astrocyte and oligodendrocyte) expression were concentrated in the rostral and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and were separately associated with immune response and transmembrane transport. Moreover, proteins as the gene expression products mediated the association between transcriptome signatures and brain volume changes in the visual and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. CONCLUSIONS Our multidimensional analyses offer a novel approach to detect specific biological pathways that capture regional structural variations in MDD, which suggests structural endophenotypes associated with MDD.

Abstract
Using magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging data from 45 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 41 healthy controls (HCs), network indices based on a 246-region Brainnetcome Atlas were investigated in the two groups, and in the MDD subgroups that were subgrouped based on their duration of the disease. Correlation between the network indices and the duration of illness was also examined. Differences were observed between the MDDS subgroup (short disease duration) and the HC group, but not between the MDD and HC groups. Compared with the HCs, the clustering coefficient (CC) values of MDDS were higher in precentral gyrus, and caudal lingual gyrus; the CC of MDDL subgroup (long disease duration) was higher in postcentral gyrus and dorsal granular insula in the right hemisphere. Network resilience analyses showed that the MDDS group was higher than the HC group, representing relatively more randomized networks in the diseased brains. The correlation analyses showed that the caudal lingual gyrus in the right hemisphere and the rostral lingual gyrus in the left hemisphere were particularly correlated with disease duration. The analyses showed that duration of the illness appears to have an impact on the networking patterns. Networking abnormalities in MDD patients could be blurred or hidden by the heterogeneity of the MDD clinical subgroups. Brain plasticity may introduce a recovery effect to the abnormal network patterns seen in patients with a relative short term of the illness, as the abnormalities may disappear in MDDL .

Abstract
BACKGROUND The phenomenology and neurobiology of depressive symptoms in anxious youth is poorly understood. METHODS Association networks of anxiety and depressive symptoms were developed in adolescents with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; N=52, mean age: 15.4±1.6 years) who had not yet developed major depressive disorder. Community analyses were used to create consensus clusters of depressive and anxiety symptoms and to identify "bridge" symptoms between the clusters. In a subset of this sample (n=39), correlations between cortical thickness and depressive symptom severity was examined. RESULTS Ten symptoms clustered into an anxious community, 5 clustered into a depressive community and 5 bridged the two communities: impaired schoolwork, excessive weeping, low self-esteem, disturbed appetite, and physical symptoms of depression. Patients with more depressive cluster burden had altered cortical thickness in prefrontal, inferior and medial parietal (e.g., precuneus, supramarginal) regions and had decreases in cortical thickness-age relationships in prefrontal, temporal and parietal cortices. LIMITATIONS Data are cross-sectional and observational. Limited sample size precluded secondary analysis of comorbidities and demographics. CONCLUSIONS In youth with GAD, a sub-set of symptoms not directly related to anxiety bridge anxiety and depression. Youth with greater depressive cluster burden had altered cortical thickness in cortical structures within the default mode and central executive networks. These alternations in cortical thickness may represent a distinct neurostructural fingerprint in anxious youth with early depressive symptoms. Finally, youth with GAD and high depressive symptoms had reduced age-cortical thickness correlations. The emergence of depressive symptoms in early GAD and cortical development may have bidirectional, neurobiological relationships.

Abstract
Cross-sectional studies in adults have long identified differences in cortical structure in adults with depression compared to healthy adults, with most studies identifying reductions in grey matter volume, cortical thickness, and surface area in primarily frontal cortical regions including the OFC, ACC, and variable sub-regions of the PFC. However, when, why, and for whom these neural correlates of depression emerge remains poorly understood, necessitating developmental study of associations between depression and cortical structure. We systematically reviewed studies examining these associations in child/adolescent samples, and applied a developmentally-focused diathesis-stress model to understand the impacts of depressogenic risk-factors and stressors on the development of structural neural correlates of depression. Cross-sectional findings in youth are generally similar to those found in adults, but vary in magnitude and direction of effects. Preliminary evidence suggests that age, sex, severity, and comorbidity moderate these associations. Longitudinal studies show depression prospectively predicting cortical structure and structure predicting emerging depression. Consistent with a diathesis-stress model, associations have been noted between risk-factors for depression (e.g., genetic risk, family risk) and environmental stressors (e.g., early life stress) and structural neural correlates. Further investigation of these associations across development with attention to vulnerability factors and stressors is indicated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychiatrists frequently struggle with how to sequence treatment for depressed adolescents who do not respond to an adequate trial of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). This study leveraged recent statistical and computational advances to create Bayesian hierarchal models (BHMs) of response in the treatment of SSRI-resistant depression in adolescents study to inform treatment planning. METHODS BHMs of individual treatment trajectories were developed and estimated using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo no u-turn sampling. From the Monte Carlo pseudorandom sample, 95% credible intervals, means, posterior tail probabilities, and so forth, were determined. Then, for the random effects model, posterior tail probabilities were used to create Bayesian two-tailed p values to evaluate the null hypotheses: no difference in efficacy between SSRIs and venlafaxine. The robustness of the results was examined using the fixed effects model of treatment comparisons. RESULTS In patients not receiving cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT; n = 168), SSRIs produced greater and faster improvement in depressive symptoms compared to venlafaxine (p = .015). No differences in response or trajectory of response for symptoms of anxiety were detected between SSRIs and venlafaxine (p = .168). For patients receiving CBT (n = 162), SSRIs and venlafaxine produced similar improvements in symptoms of anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS Findings from this novel computational approach suggest that a second trial of an SSRI is warranted for depressed adolescents who fail to respond to initial SSRI treatment.

Abstract
To explore the changes of brain function and conduct clinical differential diagnosis based on support vector machine (SVM) in adolescent patients with depression. A total of 24 adolescent patients with depression according to CCMD-3 and DSM-5 and 23 gender, education level, body mass index, and age matched healthy controls were assessed with 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). HAMD scores were requested from ≥17 of patients. Three−dimensional T1 and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired from all participants. The data were analyzed using SPM 12 and REST1.8. Two-sample t-test was conducted to compare regional homogeneity (ReHo) values among the groups of participants. Finally, based on SVM classification, clinical differential diagnosis of the patients was carried out. The receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve were used to confirm the performance of the SVM model. An increase ReHo values were observed in the lingual gyrus, middle occipital gyrus, postcentral gyrus, and precentral gyrus, whereas a decrease in ReHo was found in vermis compared with the control group. The SVM model showed good performance in classification prediction of adolescent depression, with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.778 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.661–0.797]. The changes in the spontaneous neural activity of these regions may play an important role in the neuropathological mechanism of adolescent depression and may provide promising markers for clinical evaluation.

Abstract
Maternal thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy may contribute to offspring neurobehavioral disorders. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between maternal thyroid function during pregnancy and offspring depression and anxiety. Data were taken from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. A total of 2,920 mother-child pairs were included. Thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid peroxidase antibodies were assessed during the first trimester of pregnancy because maternal supply is the only source of thyroid hormone for the fetus during the first 12 weeks of gestation. Child symptoms of depression and anxiety were assessed using the Development and Well-Being Assessment at ages 7.5 and 15 years. The odds of presenting with depression and anxiety were estimated using the generalized estimating equation. The level of FT4 during the first trimester of pregnancy was associated with child depression combined at ages 7.5 and 15 (odds ratio = 1.21, 95% confidence interval [1.00, 1.14]. An increase of 1 standard deviation of FT4 during pregnancy increased the odds of child depression by 28% after adjustment made for potential confounders. No association was found among maternal levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone, FT4, and thyroid peroxidase antibodies and childhood anxiety. In conclusion, increased levels of FT4 during the first trimester of pregnancy appear be linked to greater risk of offspring depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Considerable patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) comorbid with anxious symptoms, referred as anxious depression. The neural structural basis of this MDD specifier remains largely unknown. METHODS 104 patients with anxious depression, 57 MDD patients without significant anxious symptoms, and 160 healthy controls from single research center participated in the study with age and sex well-matched. We investigated gray matter alterations in anxious and non-anxious depression, explored different brain alterations between these two patient groups, and possible relationships between brain structural parameter and clinical information in patients. RESULTS Gray matter volumes differed in the right inferior frontal gyrus, right orbital frontal gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, bilateral culmen and left cuneus among the three groups. Anxious depression had smaller gray matter volumes in the right inferior frontal gyrus and orbital frontal gyrus relative to both non-anxious depression and healthy controls. Patients with anxious depression presented larger gray matter volumes in the left postcentral gyrus than non-anxious depression, and larger gray matter volumes in the left cuneus than healthy controls. In addition, both patient groups showed larger gray matter volumes in bilateral culmen relative to healthy controls. Gray matter volumes in the left postcentral gyrus were positively associated with overall depression severity and anxiety factor scores in anxious depression. CONCLUSION Our study revealed brain structural abnormalities in emotional regulation and sensory processing regions of anxious depression, which may suggested distinct neurobiological mechanisms of this MDD specifier and could help explain different clinical manifestations in anxious depression from pure depression.

Abstract
The radioprotective effect of herb epimedium (or yin yang huo) extract (5 g/kg, oral administration daily for 4 weeks) on neurogenesis and cognition after acute radiation exposure with 5.5 Gy was evaluated in Balb/c mice by behavioral tests and immunohistochemical study. The results indicated that epimedium extract could improve animal weight loss, locomotor activity and spatial learning and memory which are similar to pre-irradiation intraperitoneal injection (100 mg/kg) of amifostine phosphate, a well- known radioprotective drug. Immunohistochemical study showed that epimedium extract prevented the loss of proliferation cells, newly generated neurons, and interneurons in the hilus, in particular, the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus. It suggests that herb epimedium may be a promising radio-neuro-protective drug to prevent radiation-induced neuropsychological disorders.

Abstract
This study investigated the relationships between pre- and early post-natal maternal depression and their changes with frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) activity and functional connectivity in 6- and 18-month olds, as well as externalizing and internalizing behaviors in 24-month olds (n = 258). Neither prenatal nor postnatal maternal depressive symptoms independently predicted neither the frontal EEG activity nor functional connectivity in 6- and 18-month infants. However, increasing maternal depressive symptoms from the prenatal to postnatal period predicted greater right frontal activity and relative right frontal asymmetry amongst 6-month infants but these finding were not observed amongst 18-month infants after adjusted for post-conceptual age on the EEG visit day. Subsequently increasing maternal depressive symptoms from the prenatal to postnatal period predicted lower right frontal connectivity within 18-month infants but not among 6-month infants after controlling for post-conceptual age on the EEG visit day. These findings were observed in the full sample and the female sample but not in the male sample. Moreover, both prenatal and early postnatal maternal depressive symptoms independently predicted children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors at 24 months of age. This suggests that the altered frontal functional connectivity in infants born to mothers whose depressive symptomatology increases in the early postnatal period compared to that during pregnancy may reflect a neural basis for the familial transmission of phenotypes associated with mood disorders, particularly in girls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A large and extensive body of research has examined comorbid anxiety and depression in adults. Children and adolescents also frequently present with comorbid anxiety and depression; however, research and treatment require unique environmental and neurodevelopmental considerations in children. As a result, our understanding of comorbid anxiety and depression in children and adolescents is limited. OBJECTIVE The goal of this systematic review was to examine the current literature focused on comorbid anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. The review included theoretical conceptualizations as well as diagnostic, neurobiological, prevention, and treatment considerations. In addition, a proposed algorithm for the treatment of comorbid anxiety and depression in children/adolescents is provided. METHODS This systematic literature review included 3 discrete searches in Ovid SP Medline, PsycInfo, and PubMed. RESULTS The review included and synthesized 115 articles published between 1987 and 2015. The available evidence suggests that anxiety and depression are common in clinical populations of children and adolescents, and that comorbidity is likely underestimated in children and adolescents. Children and adolescents with comorbid anxiety and depression have unique presentations, greater symptom severity, and treatment resistance compared with those who have either disease in isolation. A dimensional approach may be necessary for the future development of diagnostic strategies and treatments for this population. Nascent neuroimaging work suggests that anxiety and depression each represents a distinct neurobiological phenotype. CONCLUSIONS The literature that is currently available suggests that comorbid anxiety and depression is a common presentation in children and adolescents. This diagnostic picture underscores the importance of comprehensive dimensional assessments and multimodal evidence-based approaches given the high disease severity. Future research on the neurobiology and the treatment of these common clinical conditions is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Randomized controlled trials consistently support the efficacy of antidepressants in treating youth with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), although integrated examinations of efficacy, safety, and tolerability of psychotropic medications in GAD, specifically, are rare. With this in mind, we sought to describe the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of psychopharmacologic interventions in pediatric patients with GAD. METHODS Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, prospective trials of psychopharmacologic interventions in youth with GAD were identified through a PubMed/Medline (1966-2015) search. Both authors manually reviewed trials and, to evaluate comparative efficacy and tolerability across medications, numbers needed to treat (NNT) [based on Pediatric Anxiety Rating Scale (PARS) remission criteria (PARS ≤8)] and number needed to harm (NNH) for selected treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were calculated. Finally, treatment-emergent suicidality and taper-emergent/post-study adverse events are reported descriptively. RESULTS Five trials that involved 1186 patients and evaluated four medications were reviewed and efficacy data were extracted with regard to dimensional measures of anxiety. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) demonstrated efficacy in the reduction of anxiety symptoms with NNTs ranging from 2.8 to 9.3. TEAEs varied considerably between studies but tended to be mild and generally did not lead to discontinuation. CONCLUSIONS Data from five trials of SSRI/SNRI in youth with GAD, many of whom had co-occurring separation and social anxiety disorders, suggest superiority to placebo and favorable tolerability profiles.

Abstract
Increasing efforts have been made to investigate the underlying pathophysiology of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), but only limited consistent information is available on gray (GM) and white matter (WM) volume changes in affected adults. Additionally, few studies employed dimensional approaches to GAD pathology. This study compares structural brain imaging data from n=19 GAD subjects and n=24 healthy comparison (HC) subjects, all medication-free and matched on age, sex and education. Separate categorical and dimensional models were employed using voxel-based morphometry for GM and WM. Significantly higher GM volumes were found in GAD subjects mainly in basal ganglia structures and less consistently in the superior temporal pole. For WM, GAD subjects showed significantly lower volumes in the dlPFC. Largely consistent findings in dimensional and categorical models point toward these structural alterations being reliable and of importance for GAD. While lower volume in the dlPFC could reflect impaired emotional processing and control over worry in GAD, basal ganglia alterations may be linked to disturbed gain and loss anticipation as implicated in previous functional GAD studies. As perturbations in anticipation processes are central to GAD, these areas may warrant greater attention in future studies.

Abstract
Objective The inter-correlation between and co-existence of depression and anxiety may engender inconsistency in addressing the relationship between the severity of depression and disease activity of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We aimed at identifying whether lupus disease activity is independently associated with depression and anxiety in lupus patients. Methods Adult lupus patients were assessed for the severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms and lupus disease activity by using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI), respectively. Age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited for comparison. Prevalence and severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms were compared between lupus patients and HCs. Independent relationships between the severity of anxiety (HADS-Anxiety) and depressive (HADS-Depression) symptoms, and SLEDAI were studied with regression models. Results In total, 110 lupus patients and 110 HCs were studied. Lupus patients had significantly higher HADS scores than HCs (10.82 ± 6.5 vs 7.34 ± 4.9, p < 0.001). Significantly more lupus patients had anxiety (40.9 vs 21.8%, p = 0.002) and depressive symptoms (15.5 vs 6.4%, p = 0.025) than HCs. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that SLEDAI (β = 0.160, p = 0.016), calcineurin inhibitor non-use (β = –1.929, p = 0.041) and past cyclophosphamide non-use (β = –1.603, p = 0.039) independently predicted HADS-Anxiety amongst lupus patients even after adjusting for HADS-Depression. Conversely, SLEDAI (β = 0.014, p = 0.834) lost its significant univariate correlation with HADS-Depression after controlling for HADS-Anxiety and other covariates. Conclusion Anxiety is more common in lupus patients than in HCs, and its severity is independently associated with more active SLE regardless of the presence or absence of concomitant depression.
