Importance of sulfide interaction with iron as regulator of the microbial community in biogas reactors and its effect on methanogenesis, volatile fatty acids turnover, and syntrophic long-chain fatty acids degradation

Trace elements' deficiency in energy production through methanogenesis process: Focus on the characteristics of organic solid wastes

Excessive or insufficient supplementation of trace elements (TEs) limits the progression of anaerobic digestion. The main reason for this is the lack of sufficient understanding of digestion substrate characteristics, which significantly affects the demand for TEs. In this review, the relationship between TEs requirements and substrate characteristics is discussed. We mainly focus on three aspects. 1) The basis for TE optimization and existing problems: The optimization of TEs often based on the total solids (TS) or volatile solids (VS) of substrates, does not fully consider substrate characteristics. 2) TE deficiency mechanisms for different types of substrates: nitrogen-rich, sulfur-rich, TE-poor, and easily hydrolyzed substrates are the four main types of substrates. The mechanisms underlying TEs deficiency in the different substrates are investigated. 3) Regulation of TE bioavailability: characteristics of substrates affect digestion parameters, which disturb the bioavailability TE. Therefore, methods for regulating bioavailability of TEs are discussed.

MeHg production in eutrophic lakes: Focusing on the roles of algal organic matter and iron-sulfur-phosphorus dynamics

The mechanisms by which eutrophication affects methylmercury (MeHg) production have not been comprehensively summarized, which hinders accurately predicting the MeHg risk in eutrophic lakes. In this review, we first discussed the effects of eutrophication on biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg). Special attentions were paid to the roles of algal organic matter (AOM) and iron (Fe)-sulfur (S)-phosphorus (P) dynamics in MeHg production. Finally, the suggestions for risk control of MeHg in eutrophic lakes were proposed. AOM can affect in situ Hg methylation by stimulating the abundance and activities of Hg methylating microorganisms and regulating Hg bioavailability, which are dependent on bacteria-strain and algae species, the molecular weight and composition of AOM as well as environmental conditions (e.g., light). Fe-S-P dynamics under eutrophication including sulfate reduction, FeS formation and P release could also play crucial but complicated roles in MeHg production, in which AOM may participate through influencing the dissolution and aggregation processes, structural order and surface properties of HgS nanoparticles (HgS_NP). Future studies should pay more attention to the dynamics of AOM in responses to the changing environmental conditions (e.g., light penetration and redox fluctuations) and how such variations will subsequently affect MeHg production. The effects of Fe-S-P dynamics on MeHg production under eutrophication also deserve further investigations, especially the interactions between AOM and HgS_NP. Remediation strategies with lower disturbance, greater stability and less cost like the technology of interfacial O₂ nanobubbles are urgent to be explored. This review will deepen our understanding of the mechanisms of MeHg production in eutrophic lakes and provide theoretical guidance for its risk control.

Elucidating interactive effects of sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron and ammonia on anaerobic digestion of food waste

In our previous study, anaerobic digestion of food waste could be effectively enhanced by adding sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) under high-strength ammonia concentrations. In this study, in order to further elucidate the specific interactive effects of S-nZVI and ammonia on anaerobic digestion of nitrogen-rich food waste, the methanogenic performance of anaerobic digestion systems respectively added with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and S-nZVI were compared and monitored under different ammonia stress conditions. Both nZVI and S-nZVI could effectively stimulate the methanogenesis process among ammonia concentrations ranging from 0 to 3500 mg/L. However, the enhancing effects of S-nZVI and nZVI on anaerobic digestion of food waste were different, in which anaerobic digestion systems added with S-nZVI and nZVI performed best under 2500 mg/L of ammonia and 1500 mg/L of ammonia, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of microbial communities suggested that ammonia stress enriched acetoclastic methanogens, while adding nZVI and S-nZVI into anaerobic digestions stimulated the process of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. Moreover, S-nZVI performed better in promoting the evolution of DIET-related microorganisms than nZVI, resulting in enhanced methane production under high ammonia-stressed conditions. This work provided fundamental knowledge about the interactive effects of S-nZVI and ammonia on the anaerobic digestion of food waste.

Wastewater-derived biohydrogen: Critical analysis of related enzymatic processes at the research and large scales

Organic-rich wastewater is a feasible feedstock for biohydrogen production. Numerous review on the performance of microorganisms and the diversity of their communities during a biohydrogen process were published. However, there is still no in-depth overview of enzymes for biohydrogen production from wastewater and their scale-up applications. This review aims at providing an insightful exploration of critical discussion in terms of: (i) the roles and applications of enzymes in wastewater-based biohydrogen fermentation; (ii) systematical introduction to the enzymatic processes of photo fermentation and dark fermentation; (iii) parameters that affect enzymatic performances and measures for enzyme activity/ability enhancement; (iv) biohydrogen production bioreactors; as well as (v) enzymatic biohydrogen production systems and their larger scales application. Furthermore, to assess the best applications of enzymes in biohydrogen production from wastewater, existing problems and feasible future studies on the development of low-cost enzyme production methods and immobilized enzymes, the construction of multiple enzyme cooperation systems, the study of biohydrogen production mechanisms, more effective bioreactor exploration, larger scales enzymatic biohydrogen production, and the enhancement of enzyme activity or ability are also addressed.

Effects of heavy metals and antibiotics on performances and mechanisms of anaerobic digestion

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an efficacious technology to recover energy from organic wastes/wastewater, while the efficiency of AD could be limited by metals and antibiotics in substrates. It is of great significance to deeply understand the interaction mechanisms of metals and antibiotics with anaerobic microorganisms, as well as the combined effects of metals and antibiotics, which will help us break the inherent dysfunction of AD system and promote the efficient operation of AD. Therefore, this paper reviews the effects of metals, antibiotics and their combinations on AD performance, as well as the combined effects and interactional mechanisms of metals and antibiotics with anaerobic microorganisms. In addition, control strategies and future research needs are proposed. This review provides valuable information for the enhancement strategies and engineering applications of AD for organic wastes/wastewater containing metals and antibiotics.

Influence of cysteine, serine, sulfate, and sulfide on anaerobic conversion of unsaturated long-chain fatty acid, oleate, to methane

This study aims to elucidate the role of sulfide and its precursors in anaerobic digestion (i.e., cysteine, representing sulfur-containing amino acids, and sulfate) on microbial oleate conversion to methane. Serine, with a similar structure to cysteine but with a hydroxyl group instead of a thiol, was included as a control to assess potential effects on methane formation that were not related to sulfur functionalities. The results showed that copresence of sulfide and oleate in anaerobic batch assays accelerated the methane formation compared to assays with only oleate and mitigated negative effect on methane formation caused by increased sulfide level. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of sulfide-exposed oleate suggested that sulfide reaction with oleate double bonds likely contributed to negation of the negative effect on the methanogenic activity. Methane formation from oleate was also accelerated in the presence of cysteine or serine, while sulfate decreased the cumulative methane formation from oleate. Neither cysteine nor serine was converted to methane, and their accelerating effects was associated to different mechanisms due to establishment of microbial communities with different structures, as evidenced by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. These outcomes contribute with new knowledge to develop strategies for optimum use of sulfur- and lipid-rich wastes in anaerobic digestion processes.

The absolute concentration and bioavailability of trace elements: Two vital parameters affecting anaerobic digestion performance of chicken manure leachate

It is currently unclear whether trace elements (TEs) deficiency is due to low bioavailability or low absolute TEs concentrations, especially in high-pH anaerobic digestion (AD) systems. A mixed solution of TEs and EDTA-Na₂ were used separately in mono-AD of chicken manure (CM) leachate to investigate this research gap. The results showed relatively low bioavailability of Fe, Mn, and Zn. The bioavailability of all TEs remained stable along with a gradual increase in total ammonia nitrogen concentration. Both TE and EDTA-Na₂ supplementation improved the bioavailability of TEs, but TEs supplementation also gave a high proportion of soluble TEs. Adding TEs improved methane production efficiency (+38.3%) and decreased the H₂S content. The exchangeable fraction of specific TE (Mo) in H₂/CO₂ pathway was higher in the TEs treatment. TEs bioavailability and absolute concentrations of available TEs are critical aspects that need to be scrutinized to assess the risk of TEs deficiency.

Syntrophic propionate-oxidizing bacteria in methanogenic systems

The mutual nutritional cooperation underpinning syntrophic propionate degradation provides a scant amount of energy for the microorganisms involved, so propionate degradation often acts as a bottleneck in methanogenic systems. Understanding the ecology, physiology and metabolic capacities of syntrophic propionate-oxidizing bacteria (SPOB) is of interest in both engineered and natural ecosystems, as it offers prospects to guide further development of technologies for biogas production and biomass-derived chemicals, and is important in forecasting contributions by biogenic methane emissions to climate change. SPOB are distributed across different phyla. They can exhibit broad metabolic capabilities in addition to syntrophy (e.g. fermentative, sulfidogenic and acetogenic metabolism) and demonstrate variations in interplay with cooperating partners, indicating nuances in their syntrophic lifestyle. In this review, we discuss distinctions in gene repertoire and organization for the methylmalonyl-CoA pathway, hydrogenases and formate dehydrogenases, and emerging facets of (formate/hydrogen/direct) electron transfer mechanisms. We also use information from cultivations, thermodynamic calculations and omic analyses as the basis for identifying environmental conditions governing propionate oxidation in various ecosystems. Overall, this review improves basic and applied understanding of SPOB and highlights knowledge gaps, hopefully encouraging future research and engineering on propionate metabolism in biotechnological processes.

Effluent solids recirculation to municipal sludge digesters enhances long-chain fatty acids degradation capacity

BACKGROUND

Slow degradation kinetics of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) and their accumulation in anaerobic digesters disrupt methanogenic activity and biogas production at high loads of waste lipids. In this study, we evaluated the effect of effluent solids recirculation on microbial LCFA (oleate) degradation capacity in continuous stirred-tank sludge digesters, with the overall aim of providing operating conditions for efficient co-digestion of waste lipids. Furthermore, the impacts of LCFA feeding frequency and sulfide on process performance and microbial community dynamics were investigated, as parameters that were previously shown to be influential on LCFA conversion to biogas.

RESULTS

Effluent solids recirculation to municipal sludge digesters enabled biogas production of up to 78% of the theoretical potential from 1.0 g oleate l-1 day-1. In digesters without effluent recirculation, comparable conversion efficiency could only be reached at oleate loading rates up to 0.5 g l-1 day-1. Pulse feeding of oleate (supplementation of 2.0 g oleate l-1 every second day instead of 1.0 g oleate l-1 every day) did not have a substantial impact on the degree of oleate conversion to biogas in the digesters that operated with effluent recirculation, while it marginally enhanced oleate conversion to biogas in the digesters without effluent recirculation. Next-generation sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons of bacteria and archaea revealed that pulse feeding resulted in prevalence of fatty acid-degrading Smithella when effluent recirculation was applied, whereas Candidatus Cloacimonas prevailed after pulse feeding of oleate in the digesters without effluent recirculation. Combined oleate pulse feeding and elevated sulfide level contributed to increased relative abundance of LCFA-degrading Syntrophomonas and enhanced conversion efficiency of oleate, but only in the digesters without effluent recirculation.

CONCLUSIONS

Effluent solids recirculation improves microbial LCFA degradation capacity, providing possibilities for co-digestion of larger amounts of waste lipids with municipal sludge.

Obstacles faced by methanogenic archaea originating from substrate-driven toxicants in anaerobic digestion

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is used to treat waste and produce bioenergy. However, toxicants, which originate from the substrate, can inhibit or damage the digestion process. Methanogenic archaea (MA), which are the executor in the methanogenesis stage, are more sensitive than bacteria to these toxicants. This review discusses the effects of substrate-driven toxicants, namely, antibiotics, H₂S and sulfate, heavy metals (HMs), long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), and ammonia nitrogen, on the activity of MAs, methanogenic pathways, and the inter-genus succession of MAs. The adverse effects of these five toxicants on MA include effects on pH, damages to cell membranes, the prevention of protein synthesis, changes in hydrogen partial pressure, a reduction in the bioavailability of trace elements, and hindrance of mass transfer. These effects cause a reduction in MA activity and the succession of MAs and methanogenic pathways, which affect AD performance. Under the stress of these toxicants, succession occurs among HA (hydrogenotrophic methanogen), AA (acetoclastic methanogen), and MM (methylotrophic methanogen), especially HA gradually replaces AA as the dominant MA. Simultaneously, the dominant methanogenic pathway also changes from the aceticlastic pathway to other methanogenic pathways. A comprehensive understanding of the impact of toxicants on MA permits more specific targeting when developing strategies to mitigate or eliminate the effects of these toxicants.

The bio-chemical cycle of iron and the function induced by ZVI addition in anaerobic digestion: A review

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is known to be an additive in facilitating waste treatment and improving biogas production in anaerobic digestion (AD) systems. This review concentrates on the chemical cycle of iron as well as the function of the iron cycle in the removal of four kinds of pollutants: organic carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus, which are commonly encountered in waste treatment. In recent studies, the addition of ZVI to an AD system promoted the in-situ production of CH₄ from CO₂, enabling carbon capture through biotechnology. Additionally, using iron-carbon microbial electrolytic cells in AD systems in order to accelerate electron transport, as well as specific pollutant degradation mechanisms, are illustrated in the present study. Particularly, the main factors affecting the removal efficiency of contaminants in a ZVI-AD system such as pH, VFA/ Alkalinity (ALK), oxidation-reduction potential and particle size are reviewed. According to the above characteristics, combined with technical model and economic analyses, an AD system based on ZVI was considered to be an economical, efficient and carbon-neutral pollutant treatment technology. Accordingly, Iron-based AD is suggested to be a promising and sustainable approach orientated to a circular economy, which may be applied to many waste treatments fields.

Comparative study of industrial-scale high-solid biogas production from food waste: Process operation and microbiology

Anaerobic high-solid treatment (HST) for processing food waste and biogas production is a viable technology with considerable commercial potential. In this study, we examined and compared mesophilic and thermophilic industrial-scale plug-flow digesters. The HSTs demonstrated reasonable biogas yields from food waste (0.4-0.6 Nm³ CH₄/kg volatile solids). However, during operation at thermophilic conditions ammonia inhibition (~2 g NH₃-N/L) and acid accumulation (6-14 g/L) caused severe process disturbance. Microbial community structures diverged between the processes, with temperature appearing to be a strong driver. A unique feature of the thermophilic HSTs was high abundance of the uncultivated Clostridia group MBA03 and temperature fluctuations in one mesophilic HST were linked to drastically decreased abundance of methanogens and relative abundance of Cloacimonetes. The process data obtained in this study clearly demonstrate both potential and challenges in HST of food waste but also possibilities for management approaches to tackle process imbalance and restore process function.

Prospects for biogas production and H2S control from the anaerobic digestion of cattle manure: The influence of microscale waste iron powder and iron oxide nanoparticles

Improving the quality and quantity of biogas usually requires pre-treatment to maximize methane yields and/or post-treatment to remove H₂S, which involves considerable energy consumption and higher costs. Therefore, this study proposes a cost-effective method for the enhanced anaerobic digestion (AD) of dairy manure (DM) without pre/post-treatment by directly adding waste iron powder (WIP) and iron oxide nanoparticles (INPs) to batch digesters. The results showed that the addition of iron in the form of microscale WIP (generated from the laser cutting of iron and steel) at concentrations of 100 mg/L, 500 mg/L, and 1000 mg/L improved methane yields by 36.99%, 39.36%, and 56.89%, respectively. In comparison, the equivalent dosages of INPs improved yields by 19.74%, 18.14%, and 21.11%, respectively. Additionally, the highest WIP dose (1000 mg/L) achieved the maximum improvement in the rate of hydrolysis (k), which was 1.25 times higher than in control reactions, and a maximum biomethane production rate (R_max) of 0.045 L/gVS/d according to kinetic analysis models (i.e., first-order and the Gompertz kinetic models). The rate of H₂S production was also significantly reduced (by 45.20%, 58.16%, and 77.24%) using the three WIP concentrations in comparison with INPs (which achieved reductions of 33.59%, 46.30%, and 53.52%, respectively). Therefore, the direct mixing of WIP with cattle manure is proposed as a practical and economical means of addressing complex and high-cost pre- and post-treatments that are otherwise required in the digestion process.

Organic matter rather than salinity as a predominant feature changes performance and microbiome in methanogenic sludge digesters

Due to low digestibility and long retention time of anaerobic sludge digestion, pre-treatment with alkaline/acid has been widely employed to enhance the rate and extent of sludge digestion. Nonetheless, effects of gradient concentrations of alkaline/acid pre-treatments and resulting salinity on digestion performance and sludge microbiome remain poorly understood. To elucidate these effects, both batch- and reactor-experiments were setup with varied feeding sludge. Significant digestion improvement and sludge microbiome changes were observed with alkaline/acid sludge pre-treatment, compared to non-pretreatment controls, e.g., ˜88% increase of carbon removal in sludge digesters. Surprisingly, with the same concentration of influent sludge, no notable change in digestion performance and sludge microbiome was observed in digesters when increasing alkaline/acid concentrations from 0.25 to 0.8 mol/L, and in batch serum bottles with or without NaCl amendment. Consequently, organic compounds dissolved in sludge pre-treatment could be a predominant selective pressure driving the performance and microbiome changes. By contrast, salinity as a consequence of the alkaline/acid pre-treatment could only enrich specific lineages, without altering the overall community profile and function. Together, this study provided insights into specific impacts of major factors on digester performance and sludge microbiome, and shed lights on optimization of sludge digestion.

Sulfide level in municipal sludge digesters affects microbial community response to long-chain fatty acid loads

BACKGROUND

Waste lipids are attractive substrates for co-digestion with primary and activated sewage sludge (PASS) to improve biogas production at wastewater treatment plants. However, slow conversion rates of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA), produced during anaerobic digestion (AD), limit the applicability of waste lipids as co-substrates for PASS. Previous observations indicate that the sulfide level in PASS digesters affects the capacity of microbial communities to convert LCFA to biogas. This study assessed the microbial community response to LCFA loads in relation to sulfide level during AD of PASS by investigating process performance and microbial community dynamics upon addition of oleate (C_18:1) and stearate (C_18:0) to PASS digesters at ambient and elevated sulfide levels.

RESULTS

Conversion of LCFA to biogas was limited (30% of theoretical biogas potential) during continuous co-digestion with PASS, which resulted in further LCFA accumulation. However, the accumulated LCFA were converted to biogas (up to 66% of theoretical biogas potential) during subsequent batch-mode digestion, performed without additional substrate load. Elevated sulfide level stimulated oleate (but not stearate) conversion to acetate, but oleate and sulfide imposed a synergistic limiting effect on acetoclastic methanogenesis and biogas formation. Next-generation sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons of bacteria and archaea showed that differences in sulfide level and LCFA type resulted in microbial community alterations with distinctly different patterns. Taxonomic profiling of the sequencing data revealed that the phylum Cloacimonetes is likely a key group during LCFA degradation in PASS digesters, where different members take part in degradation of saturated and unsaturated LCFA; genus W5 (family Cloacimonadaceae) and family W27 (order Cloacimonadales), respectively. In addition, LCFA-degrading Syntrophomonas, which is commonly present in lipid-fed digesters, increased in relative abundance after addition of oleate at elevated sulfide level, but not without sulfide or after stearate addition. Stearate conversion to biogas was instead associated with increasing abundance of hydrogen-producing Smithella and hydrogenotrophic Methanobacterium.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-chain fatty acid chain saturation and sulfide level are selective drivers for establishment of LCFA-degrading microbial communities in municipal sludge digesters.

ADM1 based mathematical model of trace element precipitation/dissolution in anaerobic digestion processes

Due to the complex biogeochemistry of trace elements (TEs, e.g. Fe, Ni and Co) in anaerobic digestion processes, their role and fate is poorly understood. Challenging, time consuming and low detection limits of analytical procedures necessitate recruitment of mathematical models. A dynamic mathematical model based on anaerobic digestion model no.1 (ADM1) has been proposed to simulate the effect of TEs. New chemical equilibrium association/dissociation and precipitation/dissolution reactions have been implemented to determine TE bioavailability and their effect on anaerobic digestion. The model considers interactions with inorganic carbonate (HCO₃^- and CO₃^2-), phosphate (PO₄^3-, HPO₄^2-, H₂PO₄^-) and sulfide (HS^- and S^2-). The effect of deficiency, activation, inhibition and toxicity of TEs on the biochemical processes has been modelled based on a dose-response type inhibition function. The new model can predict: the dynamics of TEs (among carbonate, sulfide and phosphate); the starvation of TEs; and the effect of initial sulfur-phosphorus ratio in an in-silico batch anaerobic system.

Dynamics of a Perturbed Microbial Community during Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Chemically Defined Soluble Organic Compounds

Knowledge of microbial community dynamics in relation to process perturbations is fundamental to understand and deal with the instability of anaerobic digestion (AD) processes. This study aims to investigate the microbial community structure and function of a thermophilic AD process, fed with a chemically defined substrate, and its association with process performance stability. Next generation amplicon sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes revealed that variations in relative abundances of the predominant bacterial species, Defluviitoga tunisiensis and Anaerobaculum hydrogeniformans, were not linked to the process performance stability, while dynamics of bacterial genera of low abundance, Coprothermobacter and Defluviitoga (other than D. tunisiensis), were associated with microbial community function and process stability. A decrease in the diversity of the archaeal community was observed in conjunction with process recovery and stable performance, implying that the high abundance of specific archaeal group(s) contributed to the stable AD. Dominance of hydrogenotrophic Methanoculleus particularly corresponded to an enhanced microbial acetate and propionate turnover capacity, whereas the prevalence of hydrogenotrophic Methanothermobacter and acetoclastic Methanosaeta was associated with instable AD. Acetate oxidation via syntrophic interactions between Coprothermobacter and Methanoculleus was potentially the main methane-formation pathway during the stable process. We observed that supplementation of Se and W to the medium improved the propionate turnover by the thermophilic consortium. The outcomes of our study provided insights into the community dynamics and trace element requirements in relation to the process performance stability of thermophilic AD.

Two-year microbial adaptation during hydrogen-mediated biogas upgrading process in a serial reactor configuration

Microbial dynamics in an upgrading biogas reactor system undergoing a more than two years-period at stable operating conditions were explored. The carbon dioxide generated during biomass degradation in the first reactor of the system was converted to methane into the secondary reactor by addition of external hydrogen. Considering the overall efficiency, the long-term operation period resulted in an improved biogas upgrading performance (99% methane content). However, a remarkable accumulation of acetate was revealed, indicating the enhancement of homoacetogenic activity. For this reason, a shift in the anaerobic digestion microbiome was expected and evaluated by 16S rRNA amplicon analysis. Results demonstrated that the most abundant archaeal species identified in the first time point, Candidatus Methanoculleus thermohydrogenotrophicum, was replaced by Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus, becoming dominant after the community adaptation. The most interesting taxonomic units were clustered by relative abundance and six main long-term adaptation trends were found, characterizing functionally related microbes (e.g. homoacetogens).

Microbial rRNA gene expression and co-occurrence profiles associate with biokinetics and elemental composition in full-scale anaerobic digesters

This study examined whether the abundance and expression of microbial 16S rRNA genes were associated with elemental concentrations and substrate conversion biokinetics in 20 full-scale anaerobic digesters, including seven municipal sewage sludge (SS) digesters and 13 industrial codigesters. SS digester contents had higher methane production rates from acetate, propionate and phenyl acetate compared to industrial codigesters. SS digesters and industrial codigesters were distinctly clustered based on their elemental concentrations, with higher concentrations of NH₃ -N, Cl, K and Na observed in codigesters. Amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and reverse-transcribed 16S rRNA revealed divergent grouping of microbial communities between mesophilic SS digesters, mesophilic codigesters and thermophilic digesters. Higher intradigester distances between Archaea 16S rRNA and rRNA gene profiles were observed in mesophilic codigesters, which also had the lowest acetate utilization biokinetics. Constrained ordination showed that microbial rRNA and rRNA gene profiles were significantly associated with maximum methane production rates from acetate, propionate, oleate and phenyl acetate, as well as concentrations of NH₃ -N, Fe, S, Mo and Ni. A co-occurrence network of rRNA gene expression confirmed the three main clusters of anaerobic digester communities based on active populations. Syntrophic and methanogenic taxa were highly represented within the subnetworks, indicating that obligate energy-sharing partnerships play critical roles in stabilizing the digester microbiome. Overall, these results provide new evidence showing that different feed substrates associate with different micronutrient compositions in anaerobic digesters, which in turn may influence microbial abundance, activity and function.
