Abstract
Research on Mg-based implants has increased recently because of their compatibility and biodegradability. Despite this promise, challenges related to high corrosion rates hampered wide-scale deployment. This paper explores the inhibiting properties of biomacromolecules, sodium alginate (ALG), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), aspartame (ASP), and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide) copolymer (PEO-b-PPO) on AZ31 Mg alloy in simulated body fluid at 37 °C. Results revealed that PEO-b-PPO accelerated, ALG insignificantly inhibited, while ASP and HEC showed moderate inhibition. At 2000 ppm, ASP and HEC offered 54 % and 53 % protection after 48 h and over 65 % if blended. Mechanistic insights were gained via XPS, FTIR, and distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis. Three corrosion mechanisms, Cl- transport, charge transfer, and ion transport across inherent MgO lattice are revealed by DRT and occurred at f = 5 Hz, f = 21 Hz and 832 Hz, and f = 100,000 Hz. Inhibitors' presence prolonged the relaxation time or changed the frequency of occurrence. Carbonates (Mg, Ca), hydroxides (Mg), and phosphates are the main corrosion products. Adsorbed ASP and HEC molecules are mixed with these products to protect the alloy. These findings offer a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms that could facilitate the development of target-oriented corrosion inhibitors for Mg.

Abstract
In this study, sulfur dots (GA-SDs) synthesized by using Gum Arabic (GA) as a green stabilizer were used as corrosion inhibitors and their inhibition effect for Q235 steel in 3.5- wt% NaCl solution was investigated by weight loss, electrochemical tests, and surface and interface analysis. The results revealed that the inhibition efficiency reached the maximum value of 96.5% at 250 mg/L and the water-soluble GA-SDs were able to adhere to the iron surface through the diffusion and agglomeration effect. The unique antibacterial activities demonstrated a 99.35% inhibition efficiency at 250 mg/L. Moreover, the optical properties endowed the inhibitors with the fluorescence tracing function, which is an effective approach to detecting the residual quantity of water treatment agents. This work may facilitate the development of the next generation of multifunction water treatment agents in industrial circulating water systems.

Abstract
To optimize the economic advantages and corrosion-resisting property of A572 Gr.65 steels, the inhibition effect of water-soluble imidazoline on the sample surface with rare earth was explored in a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. In this paper, the mechanism of corrosion and the adsorptive behavior of water-soluble imidazoline inhibitors on A572 Gr.65 steels with 47 ppm of rare earth in saltwater solution were discussed, along with the establishment of the adsorption model. Achievements proposed that the inhibition efficiency of water-soluble imidazoline was as high as 95.73% at 80 mg L-1 dosage following an anodic-dominated mixed-type inhibition mechanism. Besides, the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the corrosion inhibitor resulted in a smoother and more stable rust layer with a significant reduction of the γ-FeOOH. Theoretical calculations confirmed that imidazoline formed a unimolecular layer adsorption film on the steel surface, exhibiting adherence to both Langmuir and Frumkin adsorption isotherms, involving physical and chemical adsorption.

Abstract
In this work, two triazine derivatives (BTT-1 and BTT-2) were synthesized by the simple one-step condensation of three components and used as high-efficient corrosion inhibitors to deal with the corrosion issue of carbon steel (CS) in petroleum industry. Electrochemical tests indicate that both BTT-1 and BTT-2 present superior inhibition performance with the inhibition efficiency of 97.9 % and 98.4 % at a low concentration of 0.18 mM, respectively. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that compared to BTT-1 molecule with a butyl chain, the introduction of benzyl group endows BTT-2 molecule with more adsorption sites, which favors the adsorption of BTT-2 molecule on CS surface. Furthermore, the GFN-xTB calculations demonstrate that BTT-1 and BTT-2 could adsorb on CS surface through the formation of Fe-N and Fe-S bonds. Compared to BTT-1, BTT-2 exhibits stronger adsorption on CS surface by forming more and shorter bonds with a more negative adsorption energy, which accounts for the better inhibitive performance of BTT-2.

Abstract
In this study, the anticorrosion potential of carboxylic compounds; Lanthanum 4-hydroxycinnamate La(4OHCin)3, Cerium 4-hydroxycinnamate Ce(4OHCin)3 and Praseodymium 4-hydroxycinnamate Pr(4OHCin)3 for the protection of Al-Cu-Li alloy was investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution using electrochemical tests (EIS and PDP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The findings achieved show a very good correlation between electrochemical responses and surface morphologies of the exposed alloy, indicating a modification of the surface by precipitation of the inhibitor species, leading to effective protection against corrosion. At optimum concentration 200 ppm, the trend of inhibition efficiency η (%) increases in the order Ce(4OHCin)3 93.35% > Pr(4OHCin)3 85.34% > La(4OHCin)3 82.25%. XPS complemented the findings by detecting and providing information about the oxidation states of the protective species.

Abstract
The effect of structural difference for konjac glucomannan (KGM) and guar galactomannan (GGM) on their physicochemical properties including selective carboxylation, biodegradation and scale inhibition was firstly investigated. Compared with GGM, KGM can be specially modified by amino acid to prepare carboxyl-functionalized polysaccharides. The structure-activity relationship explaining the difference in carboxylation activity and the anti-scaling abilities of polysaccharides and carboxylated derivatives were explored by static anti-scaling, iron oxide dispersion and biodegradation tests coupled with structural and morphological characterizations. KGM with linear structure was preferred for carboxylated modification by glutamic acid (KGMG) and aspartic acid (KGMA) while GGM with branched structure failed to accomplish that due to steric hindrance. GGM and KGM showed limited scale inhibition performance, which was probably attributed to the moderate adsorption and isolation effect of macromolecular stereoscopic structure. While KGMA and KGMG performed as effective and degradable inhibitors for CaCO3 scale with inhibitory efficiencies > 90 %.

Abstract
In the current world, freshwater production by clean energy sources with minimum environmental footprints is the main challenge for humankind which is dramatically deteriorating by overexploitation of available water resources. Seawater desalination technology greatly contributes to the mitigation of these serious conditions to produce potable water. However, because desalination plants handle extremely aggressive seawater under stringent operational conditions, they are highly vulnerable to insidious effects of corrosion primarily in the form of general and localized corrosion. Moreover, mineral scaling and bio-fouling are major challenges that further exacerbate corrosion phenomena. So, to ensure the continual operation and curbing corrosion in seawater desalination systems, strict monitoring and selection of highly corrosion-resistance materials are of prime concern. The present paper briefly explores fundamental concepts of corrosion in the desalination industry besides discussing different mitigation strategies for reducing the pernicious effects of corrosion which gravely impair environment quality and durability of desalination infrastructures. Moreover, the authors propose the knowledge gaps and perspectives to delineate the future research direction. Effective solutions for avoiding seawater stagnation, developing highly sophisticated coatings and surface modification technologies, application of advanced computational programs for accurate prediction of possible corrosion failure in desalination plants, and using quantum technology and magnetic corrosion inhibitor in seawater desalination are recommended as an urgent future research focus to combat against corrosion. On the whole, despite outstanding breakthroughs in the field of corrosion control in the desalination industry, the long-term performance of current materials is highly controversial as still many cases of corrosion failures have been reported which indicates the necessity of intensive research work.

Abstract
Herein, the synthesis of a biocompatible silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), for colorimetric detection of toxic mercury (II) ion (Hg2+), is reported. Phenolic-rich fraction of Asystasia gangetica leaf was extracted and used as a reductant of silver salt, all within the hydrophilic konjac glucomannan (KgM) solution as stabilizer, at room temperature (RT). The bioactive components of Asystasia gangetica phenolic extract (AGPE), as elucidated with a (UHPLC-MS-QTOF-MS), revealed plethora of phenolic compounds, which can facilitate the reduction of silver salt at ambient conditions. Sparkling yellow colloidal solution of KgM-AgNPs was realized within 1 h, at RT, having a UV–vis maximum at 420 nm. KgM-AgNPs was characterized using UV–vis, Raman and (FTIR), TEM, SEM, EDS, XRD, TGA/DTG. TEM and FESEM images showed that KgM-AgNPs were spherical, with particle size distribution around 10–15 nm from TEM. The KgM-AgNPs biocompatibility was investigated on mouse L929 fibrobroblast and rat erythrocytes, without any harmful damages on the tested cells. In aqueous environment, KgM-AgNPs demonstrated good detection capacity toward Hg2+, in a Hg2+ concentration dependent fashion, within 3 min. Absorbance ratios (A360/A408) was linear with Hg2+ concentrations from 0.010–10.0 to 10.0–60.0 µM, with an estimated (LOD) of 3.25 nM. The probe was applied in lake water sample, with satisfactory accuracy.

Abstract
The parsley extract (PLE) was prepared using absolute ethyl alcohol. The PLE and synergistic iodide were firstly utilized as efficacious corrosion inhibitors to slow down the corrosion rate of carbon steel-Q235 in 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution. The anti-corrosion performance was researched by weight loss method, electrochemical tests, surface analysis and quantum chemistry calculation. Results of electrochemical and weight loss tests show that the synergetic PLE and I− exhibit the optimal corrosion inhibition efficiency 99%. The combined inhibitor displays the favorable long-term corrosion inhibition effect, and the inhibition efficiency can maintain more than 90% after 144 h immersion. The introduction of I− makes carbon steel surface with higher negative charge amount, which could be beneficial to the interaction between corrosion inhibitor and Fe atoms. The adsorption behavior obeys the Langmuir isotherm adsorption, and involves chemical and physical adsorption. On the basis of electrochemical consequences and theoretical calculation, the adsorption process and anti-corrosion mechanisms are further explored.

Abstract
A novel and eco-friendly chitosan derivative was synthesized as green corrosion inhibitors on C3003 aluminum alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. In this paper, CP was prepared by Schiff Base reaction with chitosan and 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde. Then, TiO2 was dispersed in CP to prepare CPT nanocomposite. The corrosion inhibition effect of CPT on C3003 aluminum alloy at different concentrations were studied with electrochemical techniques and surface analysis. The results showed that the maximum inhibition efficiency of CPT nanocomposite reaches to 94.5 % at 200 ppm after the immersed in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 72 h. Meanwhile, the contact angle increases to 120° due to the formation of hydrophobic substances. The strategy of organic/inorganic hybrid can provide the inspiration for the development of chitosan corrosion inhibitor with low concentration and high efficiency.

Abstract
In the view of environmental protection and sustainable development, the application of green effective inhibitors for metal corrosion in industry field is of great significance. In this work, two thiourea functionalized glucosamine derivatives, 5-hydroxy-1-phenyl-4-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxybutyl)imidazolidine-2-thione (GA-1) and 1-phenyl-3-(2,4,5-trihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-3-yl)thiourea (GA-2), were synthesized as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors for mild steel (MS) in 1 M HCl solution, and their inhibition performance were evaluated by electrochemical tests and surface analyses. The electrochemical tests and surface analyses indicate that both GA-1 and GA-2 have high inhibition performance. Especially for GA-2, the inhibition efficiency reaches 97.7% with a concentration of 0.64 mM. Theoretical calculations were also conducted to elucidate the adsorption mechanism of GA-1 and GA-2 on MS surface.

Abstract
Two drugs (cefpirome, cefixime) as dual-action inhibitors could self-organize on copper surface forming bio-functional protective film, which effectively prevents copper corrosion in the picking process with an excellent performance on the resistance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that studied drugs can self-organize on copper surface successfully forming adsorption film to protect copper. The results also indicated that N/S atoms with the lone pair electrons in the drugs donated electrons to the vacant orbital of Cu occupying the active sites of copper surface. Electrochemistry and surface morphology study revealed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of cefixime was better than cefpirome. Furthermore, adsorption isotherm study suggested that the adsorption was spontaneous chemical and physical adsorption, obeying Langmuir adsorption.

Abstract
Two chitosan derivatives were synthesized for the first time as green corrosion inhibitors for the carbon dioxide corrosion of P110 steel. The structures of the synthesized products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. Electrochemical and weight-loss experiments were used to test the effect of corrosion inhibitors, while SEM-EDS, AFM and other analysis methods were used to study the protection mechanism of corrosion inhibitors. The experimental results show that synthetic corrosion inhibitors CHC and CAHC are all good corrosion inhibitors for carbon dioxide corrosion inhibition. Both chitosan derivatives can form hydrophobic protective films on the metal surface. For inhibition performance, CAHC is better than CHC, which is the same conclusion drawn from practical experiments and quantum chemical calculations. Investigation into chitosan inhibitors has opened up a new area of research of environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors, which is of great significance for metal protection without toxicity and side effects.

Abstract
Poly acrylic acid (PAA) and polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) were investigated as scale inhibitors. The static experiments certified that PAA was superior to PESA for the inhibition of calcium carbonate in the low molecular weight range. The X-ray diffraction patterns suggest that the effect of PAA on the calcite (1 0 4) and (1 1 0) crystal plane was more obvious. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the surface morphology of the depositions, which indicated that the addition of scale inhibitors could disturb the normal growth of CaCO3 scale. The transmittance ratio of ferric oxide demonstrated that PAA had a better dispersion performance than PESA. The molecular dynamics simulation and quantum calculation were selected to theoretically explore the mechanism and structure of scale inhibitors, indicating that the interaction of PAA with (1 0 4) and (1 1 0) calcite crystal surfaces was stronger than PESA. In addition, the results indicated that the PAA with negative charge more easily adsorbed free Ca2+ in the aqueous phase. Based on these observations, PAA exhibited better scale inhibition and dispersion effects than PESA in the case of low molecular weight.

Abstract
A composite coating containing konjac glucomannan (KGM) and CaCO3 was fabricated on AA5052 alloy through a self-curing process, and its surface morphology and component were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effect of Ca(OH)2 content on the protective property of the composite coating for aluminum alloy in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, the inhibitory performance of the coating on the pitting corrosion of metal was examined by potentiodynamic polarization curves and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The images of scanning electron microscope show the composite coating with a thickness of 50 μm has well-defined branch-shaped structure. The FT-IR spectra confirm the successful fabrication of the polymer coating through the formation of CaCO3. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy suggest that the resistance of the aluminum alloy sample coated with such protective layer is improved by six orders of magnitude, compared with the bare metal. After 60 d of immersion, the polarization curve data and AFM analysis show the pitting corrosion occurring on AA5052 surface is prevented due to the barrier property of coating.

Abstract
Taraxacum officinale extract (TOE) has been tested for preventing the corrosion of cooling systems in desalination plants. The inhibition of corrosion effects has been characterized by chemical and electrochemical methods (Mass loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and surface observations. Tests on cooling systems were carried out in seawater environment. The presence of TOE in the re-circulation loop decreases the corrosion of carbon steel by adsorption of TOE compounds on the surface of metal pipes. The optimum TOE concentration was reached at 400 mg L-1 and the inhibition efficiency was higher than 94%. TOE allowed increasing the energy barrier of the corrosion process. SEM, FT-IR and UV spectra observations confirmed that TOE prevents corrosion attacks at the surface of the pipes. HPLC analyses identified the presence of saccharides, organic acids, phenol antioxidant and caffeic acid derivatives in TOE, which may be the active promoters of corrosion inhibition.

Abstract
The electrochemical behaviour and the passive film microstructure of aluminum during its exposure to 3.5 wt% NaCl solution in the absence and presence of S2− ions are investigated using potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, XRD, XRF, SEM and AFM. Electrochemical measurements show that the presence of S2− ions enhances the uniform corrosion of aluminum in NaCl solution, but delay its susceptibility to the pitting corrosion. In addition, EIS analysis illustrate that the formation of more compact and protective passive layer in the presence of S2− ions compared to its rough surface in the absence of S2− ions as evidenced by the lower value of constant phase element (CPE) and higher value of phase shift (N). Cracks, non- homogenous and open large pits with high degree of roughness are clearly observed on the aluminum surface in the absence of S2− ions, compared to oriented grooves, elongated ridges with the accumulation of the corrosion products inside the pits in the presence of S2− ions. The inhibitory effect of S2− ions for the pitting corrosion of aluminum is interpreted on the basis of the change in its microstructure of the passive film in the absence and presence of S2−ions.

Abstract
The anti-corrosion inhibition effect of itraconazole on copper (Cu) in 0.5 M H2SO4 is observed with variety of experimental methods, including electrochemical measurement, surface morphology analysis, and theoretical calculations. These experimental results all confirm that itraconazole exhibits excellent anti-corrosion performance in the certain temperatures range (298 K–313 K) for copper in sulfuric acid solution. In addition, corresponding adsorption isothermal models were used to fit the adsorption behavior of itraconazole on the copper surface. The results show that the Langmuir adsorption model agrees best with the experimental results. The adsorption of itraconazole on the copper surface belongs to chemical and physical adsorption.
