Abstract
Freezing is a serious problem that affects the power, transport, and transmission industries and is a major concern for the national economy and safety. Currently, several engineering de-icing methods, such as thermal, mechanical, and chemical de-icing, have shown problems related to energy consumption, efficiency, and the environment. Superhydrophobic materials have high droplet contact and roll angles, which can reduce the droplet residence and ice adhesion on their surfaces and have unique advantages in the self-cleaning and anti-icing fields. This paper introduces the development of infiltration theory and superhydrophobic materials and their principles of anti-icing and de-icing. Herein, the preparation and coating methods of superhydrophobic materials in applications are summarised, the performance and lifetime issues of superhydrophobic materials in applications are clarified, and the research progress on superhydrophobic materials in different fields is reviewed. Prospects for the application of superhydrophobic materials in electrified railways are also presented. A feasibility study was conducted to solve some of the existing problems of electrified railways, providing a theoretical basis for the development of electrified railways.

Abstract
The adhesion of sticky liquid foods to a contacting surface can cause many technical challenges. The food manufacturing sector is confronted with many critical issues that can be overcome with long-lasting and highly nonwettable coatings. Nanoengineered biomimetic surfaces with distinct wettability and tunable interfaces have elicited increasing interest for their potential use in addressing a broad variety of scientific and technological applications, such as antifogging, anti-icing, antifouling, antiadhesion, and anticorrosion. Although a large number of nature-inspired surfaces have emerged, food-safe nonwetted surfaces are still in their infancy, and numerous structural design aspects remain unexplored. This Review summarizes the latest scientific research regarding the key principles, fabrication methods, and applications of three important categories of nonwettable surfaces: superhydrophobic, liquid-infused slippery, and re-entrant structured surfaces. The Review is particularly focused on new insights into the antiwetting mechanisms of these nanopatterned structures and discovering efficient platform methodologies to guide their rational design when in contact with food materials. A detailed description of the current opportunities, challenges, and future scale-up possibilities of these nanoengineered surfaces in the food industry is also provided.

Abstract
In this study, hydrophobic sodium alginate/anthocyanin/cellulose nanocrystal indicator films were fabricated by incorporating nanosilica (NS) as a waterproofing layer. The concentrations and formation methods (spraying (S), coating (C), and impregnation (I)) of the NS layer (denoted as NSS, NSC, NSI, respectively) were optimized. The results indicated that the optimum concentration of the NS layer was 5 % at a water contact angle (WCA) 110.5°. Further, Fourier transform infrared spectra showed the presence of SiOSi and SiCH3 groups in the NSS, NSC, and NSI films, and X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that original structures of these films were disordered. Moreover, the surface morphology, mechanical properties, and light transmission were affected by the NS layer, and the optimal layer was found to be NSI. After 10 days of storage at 100 % humidity, the NSI film exhibited low water vapor adsorption (37.22 g) and permeability (0.1484 g/m·s·Pa·10-11) and a high WCA (110.2°). In addition, the NSI film exhibited a visible color shift with an increasing pH of the buffer solution. A monitoring test of fish freshness showed that the NSI film displayed a distinctive color change corresponding to fish spoilage during 14 days of storage. This indicates that NSI has high potential in indicator film applications.

Abstract
In the evolving landscape of food packaging, lipid-based edible films and coatings are emerging as a sustainable and effective solution for enhancing food quality and prolonging shelf life. This critical review aims to offer a comprehensive overview of the functional properties, roles, and fabrication techniques associated with lipid-based materials in food packaging. It explores the unique advantages of lipids, including waxes, resins, and fatty acids, in providing effective water vapor, gas, and microbial barriers. When integrated with other biopolymers, such as proteins and polysaccharides, lipid-based composite films demonstrate superior thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties. The review also covers the application of these innovative coatings in preserving a wide range of fruits and vegetables, highlighting their role in reducing moisture loss, controlling respiration rates, and maintaining firmness. Furthermore, the safety aspects of lipid-based coatings are discussed to address consumer and regulatory concerns.

Abstract
Adhesion of liquid foods on their packaging materials has caused significant food wastes and environment pollution, which has attracted great attention. Food grade superhydrophobic coatings are very promising to solve the issue but suffer from low mechanical stability and complex preparation methods. Herein, a food grade superhydrophobic coating for anti-adhesion of liquid foods was prepared by combining edible paraffin wax, polydimethylsiloxane-modified attapulgite natural nanorods and a food grade silicone adhesive. The concentration of polydimethylsiloxane-modified attapulgite, ultrasonication time and the volume ratio of the paraffin wax/attapulgite suspension to the silicone adhesive solution have great influences on wettability and morphology of the coatings. The coatings exhibit good static and dynamic superhydrophobicity due to their hierarchical micro-/nanostructure and low surface energy of the polydimethylsiloxane-modified attapulgite and paraffin wax. Moreover, the coatings exhibit good mechanical and chemical stability. The coatings are also highly repellent towards various liquid foods including the hot ones. Furthermore, the coatings are applicable onto various frequently used flexible and hard food packing materials including polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, aluminium alloy and paper, etc. Thus, the superhydrophobic coatings have great application potential in the food packing industry for anti-adhesion of liquid foods.

Abstract
To improve the hydrophobicity of polysaccharide-based films, hydrophobic carnauba wax-based particles were prepared by Pickering emulsion. The influence of the different size of the particles on the structure and hydrophobicity of the chitosan coating films were investigated. The results showed that micro-scale particles (average particle size 25.04 μm) with nano-scale (5-10 nm) TiO2 uniformly distributed on the surface of the particles were formed by Pickering emulsion. The chitosan coating films showed higher contact angle and lower sliding angle compared to the control due to the hierarchical structure, hydrophobicity and arrangement of the particles. In addition, the small particle (23-48 μm) coating film showed higher hydrophobicity than the large particle coating film (48-70 μm) due to the small particle size and the formation of more small gaps. The gaps were conducive to form "air cushion" which reduced the contact area between water and the coating films and thus increased contact angle and decreased sliding angle. The coating films showed high chemical stability and low residual rates of liquid food. The results suggest that Pickering emulsion is an effective method to create wax-based particles with hierarchical structure and the particles have potential to be used as hydrophobic coating materials.

Abstract
Biodegradable gelatin (G) food packaging films are in increasing demand as the substitution of petroleum-based preservative materials. However, G packaging films universally suffer from weak hydrophobicity in practical applications. Constructing a hydrophobic micro/nanocoating with low surface energy is an effective countermeasure. However, the poor compatibility with the hydrophilic G substrate often leads to the weak interfacial adhesion and poor durability of the hydrophobic coating. To overcome this obstacle, we used (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) as an interfacial bridging agent to prepare a highly hydrophobic, versatile G nanocomposite film. Specifically, tannic acid (TA)-modified nanohydroxyapatite (n-HA) particles (THA) were introduced in G matrix (G-THA) to improve the mechanical properties. Micro/nanostructure with low surface energy composed of nanozinc oxide (Nano-ZnO)/APS/stearic acid (SA) (NAS) was constructed on the surface of G-THA film (G-THA/NAS) through one-step spray treatment. Consequently, as-prepared G-THA/NAS film presented excellent mechanics (tensile strength: 7.6 MPa, elongation at break: 292.7%), water resistance ability (water contact angle: 150.4°), high UV-shielding (0% transmittance at 200 nm), degradability (100% degradation rate after buried in the natural soil for 15 days), antioxidant (78.8% of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity), and antimicrobial (inhibition zone against Escherichia coli: 15.0 mm and Staphylococcus aureus: 16.5 mm) properties. It should be emphasized that the bridging function of APS significantly improves the interfacial adhesion ability of the NAS coating with more than 95% remaining area after the cross-cut adhesion test. Meanwhile, the G-THA/NAS film could maintain stable and long-lasting hydrophobic surfaces against UV radiation, high temperature, and abrasion. Based on these multifunctional properties, the G-THA/NAS film was successfully applied as a liquid packaging material. To sum up, we provide a feasible and effective method to prepare high-performance green packaging films.

Abstract
Natural bio-material surface with hydrophobic behavior (aqueous droplet to roll off from its surface) has inspired researchers to design sustainable artificial coatings with hydrophobic or superhydrophobic behavior. The developed hydrophobic or superhydrophobic artificial coatings are highly useful in various applications such as water remediation, oil/water separation, self-cleaning, anti-fouling, anti-corrosion and also in medical fields including anti-viral, anti-bacterial efficacy. In recent years, among various coating materials, bio-based materials derived from plants and animals (cellulose, lignin, sugarcane bagasse, peanut shell, rice husk, egg cell etc.) are applied on various surfaces in order to develop fluorine free hydrophobic coatings with longer durability by lowering the surface energy and increasing the surface roughness. This review summarized recent developments in hydrophobic/superhydrophobic coating fabrication methods, properties and applications with the use of different bio-based materials and their combinations. In addition, basic mechanisms behind the coating fabrication process and their durability under different environmental conditions are also discussed. Moreover, prospects and limitations of bio-based coatings in practical applications have been highlighted.

Abstract
The production of waxes from vegetable oils, such as palm oil, for use as a base material in products for human applications is an alternative to those derived from petroleum and animals. Seven palm oil-derived waxes, called biowaxes (BW1-BW7) in this work, were obtained by catalytic hydrotreating of refined and bleached African palm oil and refined palm kernel oil. They were characterized by three properties: compositional, physicochemical (melting point, penetration value, and pH), and biological (sterility, cytotoxicity, phototoxicity, antioxidant, and irritant). Their morphologies and chemical structures were studied by SEM, FTIR, UV-Vis, and 1H NMR. The BWs presented structures and compositions similar to natural biowaxes (beeswax and carnauba). They had a high concentration of waxy esters (17%-36%) with long alkyl chains (C, 19-26) per carbonyl group, which are related to high melting points (<20-47.9 °C) and low penetration values (2.1-3.8 mm). They also proved to be sterile materials with no cytotoxic, phototoxic, antioxidant, or irritant activity. The biowaxes studied could be used in cosmetic and pharmacological products for human use.

Abstract
Cellulose paper packaging materials have gained considerable attention as substitutes for petroleum-based plastics owing to their biodegradability, renewability, flexibility, and good mechanical strength. However, high hydrophilicity and the absence of essential antibacterial activity limit their application in food packaging. In this study, a facile and energy-saving method was developed to improve the hydrophobicity of cellulose paper and endow it with a long-acting antibacterial effect by integrating cellulose paper substrate with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). A dense and homogenous coating of regular hexagonal ZnMOF-74 nanorods was in-situ formed on a paper surface by layer-by-layer assembly followed by low-surface-energy polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification to prepare a superhydrophobic PDMS@(ZnMOF-74)5@paper. Excellent anti-fouling, self-cleaning, and antibacterial adhesion performances were obtained for this superhydrophobic paper. In addition, active carvacrol was loaded into the pores of ZnMOF-74 nanorods on PDMS@(ZnMOF-74)5@paper to combine antibacterial adhesion together with bactericidal ability, ultimately resulting in a completely "bacteria-free" surface and sustained antibacterial performance. The resultant superhydrophobic papers not only showed overall migration values within the limit of 10 mg/dm2 but also good stability against various harsh mechanical, environmental, and chemical treatments. This work gave insights into the potential of in-situ-developed MOFs-dopped coating as a functionally modified platform for preparing active superhydrophobic paper-based packaging.

Abstract
Food loss and waste occur for many reasons, from crop processing to household leftovers. Even though some waste generation is unavoidable, a considerable amount is due to supply chain inefficiencies and damage during transport and handling. Packaging design and materials innovations represent real opportunities to reduce food waste within the supply chain. Besides, changes in people's lifestyles have increased the demand for high-quality, fresh, minimally processed, and ready-to-eat food products with extended shelf-life, that need to meet strict and constantly renewed food safety regulations. In this regard, accurate monitoring of food quality and spoilage is necessary to diminish both health hazards and food waste. Thus, this work provides an overview of the most recent advances in the investigation and development of food packaging materials and design with the aim to improve food chain sustainability. Enhanced barrier and surface properties as well as active materials for food conservation are reviewed. Likewise, the function, importance, current availability, and future trends of intelligent and smart packaging systems are presented, especially considering biobased sensor development by 3D printing technology. In addition, driving factors affecting fully biobased packaging design and materials development and production are discussed, considering byproducts and waste minimization and revalorization, recyclability, biodegradability, and other possible ends-of-life and their impact on product/package system sustainability.

Abstract
Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) realized on commercial materials provides various functionalities, such as corrosion resistance, condensation heat transfer, anti-fouling, de/anti-icing, and self-cleaning. In particular, perfluorinated lubricants infused in fluorocarbon-coated porous structures have showed exceptional performances with durability; however, they caused several issues in safety, due to their difficulty in degradation and bio-accumulation. Here, we introduce a new approach to create the multifunctional lubricant-impregnated surface with edible oils and fatty acid, which are also safe to human body and degradable in nature. The edible oil-impregnated anodized nanoporous stainless steel surface shows a significantly low contact angle hysteresis and sliding angle, which is similar with general surface of fluorocarbon lubricant-infused systems. The edible oil impregnated in the hydrophobic nanoporous oxide surface also inhibits the direct contact of external aqueous solution to a solid surface structure. Due to such de-wetting property caused by a lubricating effect of edible oils, the edible oil-impregnated stainless steel surface shows enhanced corrosion resistance, anti-biofouling and condensation heat transfer with reduced ice adhesion.

Abstract
In the past few years, bioinspired eco-friendly superhydrophobic materials (EFSMs) have made great breakthroughs, especially in the fields of environment, energy and biology, which have made remarkable contributions to the sustainable development of the natural environment. However, some potential challenges still exist, which urgently need to be systematically summarized to guide the future development of this field. Herein, in this review, initially, we discuss the five typical superhydrophobic models, namely, the Wenzel, Cassie, Wenzel-Cassie, "lotus", and "gecko" models. Then, the existence of superhydrophobic creatures in nature and artificial EFSMs are summarized. Then, we focus on the applications of EFSMs in the fields of environment (self-cleaning, wastewater purification, and membrane distillation), energy (solar evaporation, heat accumulation, and batteries), and biology (biosensors, biomedicine, antibacterial, and food packaging). Finally, the challenges and developments of eco-friendly superhydrophobic materials are highlighted.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant renewable resource on earth and currently most of this biomass is considered a low-value waste. Specifically, lignin is an underrated bioresource that is mostly burned for energy production and few value-added products have been created. Since the agro-food industry produces large amounts of wastes that can be potential sources of high-quality lignin, scientific efforts should be directed to this industry. Thus, this review provides a systematic overview of the trends and evolution of research on agro-food system-derived lignin (from 2010 to 2020), including the extraction of lignin from various agro-food sources and emergent applications of lignin in the agro-food chain. Crops with the highest average production/year (n = 26) were selected as potential lignin sources. The extraction process efficiency (yield) and lignin purity were used as indicators of the raw material potential. Overall, it is notable that research interest on agro-food lignin has increased exponentially over the years, both as source (567%) and application (128%). Wheat, sugarcane, and maize are the most studied sources and are the ones that render the highest lignin yields. As for the extraction methods used, alkaline and organosolv methods are the most employed (∼50%). The main reported applications are related to lignin incorporation in polymers (∼55%) and as antioxidant (∼24%). Studies on agro-food system-derived lignin is of most importance since there are numerous possible sources that are yet to be fully valorized and many promising applications that need to be further developed.

Abstract
With the attention to pollution and human health, nontoxic food grade superhydrophobic coating as a strategy to reduce food waste has aroused wide interest. Herein, a food grade colorimetric starch-based waterproof coating was achieved using starch nanoparticle (SNP), stearic acid (STA) and anthocyanin. The as-prepared coating exhibited considerable thermostability and remarkable water repellency due to the low-surface-energy pomegranate pulp-like micro/nanostructure assembled by STA and SNP. The certain mechanical and chemical durability, prominent self-cleaning property and liquid food repellency in the coating had been thoroughly verified. Additionally, anthocyanin was creatively introduced to the coating via SNP loading, which endowed the coating with color response to different pH solutions. Thus, the coating is applicable to freshness monitoring without being disabled by water. This thermostable and colorimetric starch-based waterproof coating shows promising application prospects in advanced bio-based food-contact material field.

Abstract
The wettability, surface energy, structure, and morphology of a material’s surface will affect the interaction process between the material and the organism. Moreover, these factors are not independent of each other, but will affect each other, which together determine the biological surface of the material. Although two classic theories of surface wettability control have been established, including the Wenzel model and the Cassie–Baxter model, the mechanism of the microstructure parameters on the surface wettability has not been considered. This paper established a two-dimensional mathematical model of the composite wetting pattern based on microstructure parameters, revealed the mechanism of the microstructure parameters on the surface wettability, and then used ultra-precision cutting and molding composite preparation methods to quickly and efficiently prepare bionic structures, and the hydrophobic character of the microstructure was characterized by the contact angle meter, which provides theoretical support and preparation technology for the modification of the hydrophobic character of the material.

Abstract
Edible coatings are important for horticulture crops preservation and reducing food waste. Application of edible coatings followed by low-temperature storage prolongs the storability, preserves quality, and decreases the overall postharvest losses. This study evaluated the efficacy of two nanoemulsions formulae containing thyme essential oil and whey proteins as coatings for zucchini, with the purpose of extending their shelf-life. The nanoemulsions were rheologically evaluated and the formula with guar and arabic gum mix stabilizer (S) showed a better capacity to restructure after strain compared to the formulae with Tween 20 (T). The S coating material had a better capacity to integrate nanoparticles compared to T. However, when applied on zucchini, T coating was more effective in reducing weight loss showing 16% weight loss compared to 21% in S, after 42 days. At the end of storage at 10 °C, the T-coated zucchini had better firmness (p < 0.05) compared with S and both coatings were superior to control (p < 0.05). POD (peroxidase) activity was high in peel at the end of storage when also CAT (catalase) showed a sudden increase. On the 42nd day of storage, the highest enzymes activity (CAT, POD, and APX (ascorbate peroxidase)) was present in the S-coated zucchini peel. The most abundant volatile in T coating was α-pinene and 4-carene in S. Sensory analysis showed that T coating delayed the appearance of senescence while S exhibited surface cracks.

Abstract
Biodegradable polymers suffer from inherent performance limitations that severely limit their practical application. Their functionalization by coating technology is a promising strategy to significantly improve their physical properties for food packaging. In this study, we investigated the double coating technique to produce multifunctional, high barrier and heat-sealable biodegradable films. The systems consisted of a web layer, made of poly(lactide) (PLA) and poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), which was first coated with a poly(vinyl) alcohol based layer, providing high barrier, and then with a second layer of PLA + ethylene-bis-stereamide (EBS) wax (from 0 to 20%), to provide sealability and improve moisture resistance. The films were fully characterized in terms of chemical, thermal, morphological, surface and functional properties. The deposition of the PVOH coating alone, with a thickness of 5 μm, led to a decrease in the oxygen transmission rate from 2200 cm3/m2 d bar, for the neat substrate (thickness of 22 μm), to 8.14 cm3/m2 d bar (thickness of 27 μm). The deposition of the second PLA layer did not affect the barrier properties but provided heat sealability, with a maximum bonding strength equal to 6.53 N/25 mm. The EBS wax incorporation into the PLA slightly increased the surface hydrophobicity, since the water contact angle passed from 65.4°, for the neat polylactide layer, to 71° for the 20% wax concentration. With respect to the substrate, the double-coated films exhibited increased stiffness, with an elastic modulus ca. three times higher, and a reduced elongation at break, which, however still remained above 75%. Overall, the developed double-coated films exhibited performances comparable to those of the most common synthetic polymer films used in the packaging industry, underlining their suitability for the packaging of sensitive foods with high O2-barrier requirements.

Abstract
Despite the market demand for biofiber assemblies endowed with superhydrophobicity being huge, the current approaches to their production are complicated, time-consuming, and even pose a serious threat to the environment. Here, we report a simple surface treatment strategy to prepare environmentally friendly superhydrophobic biofiber composites. The obtained samples have certain UV resistance properties, which are mainly determined by the titanium dioxide (TiO2) dosage. Additionally, the sample has excellent thermal stability, and the contact angle is maintained at 153.26° after heat treatment at 140 °C for 1 h. Quite encouragingly, thermal annealing of samples can transform translucent coatings into transparent structures and increase the tensile strength. The results also showed that this strategy could be integrated into the mass production process of other biofiber components as coating, such as coated paper, pulp boards, cotton gauzes, tissues, and so forth. Due to the facile preparation and environment-friendliness, this sustainable paper-based product can be used in diversified applications: packaging and storage of liquid food, protection of ancient books, UV- and rain-proof materials, and teaching demonstrations relevant to bionics, among others.

Abstract
Colorimetric starch film containing anthocyanins is extensively used in eco-friendly intelligent food packaging, but its high water wettability limits its practical application in the food industry. Herein, a super anti-wetting colorimetric starch film was prepared by surface modification with a nano-starch/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) composite coating. The water sensitivity, optical properties, mechanical properties, surface morphology, and surface chemical composition of this film were systemically investigated by multiple methods. The obtained film exhibited an extremely high water contact angle (152.46°) and low sliding angle (8.15°) owing to the hierarchical micro-/nanostructure formed by nano-starch aggregates combined with the low-surface-energy PDMS covering. The anti-wettability, optical barrier, and mechanical properties of this film were also significantly improved. The self-cleaning and liquid-food-repelling abilities of this film were comprehensively confirmed. Moreover, this super anti-wetting colorimetric starch film can be applied to monitor the freshness of aquatic products without being disabled by water.

Abstract
Based on aphid wax-honeydew marble and the hydrophobic wax structure of lotus and its derived applications with superareophilic and superhydrophobic properties, edible carnauba wax and beeswax particles were mixed and utilized to mimic lotus wax and wrap liquid, thus forming liquid marbles (LMs). Through the utilization of continuous production system (CPS), wax as an interfacial surfactant, water and solid, air-phase or mixed-phase marble content was produced. The edible liquid marble (ELM) could encapsulate water and food droplets. Edible solid marble (ESM) and edible solid hollow marbles (ESHMs) could be fabricated by applying pectin or syrup. Moreover, through the heating of wax powders with different melting temperatures, stable tablets and hollow capsules could be produced. The wax powder as interfacial surfactant could firmly bind with pectin through hydrogen bonds on ESM. The edible LMs can therefore be applied for residue reduction, corrosion reduction, biohazard prevention and cleaning in the food industry. The other phase LMs could act as novel tools in the pharmaceutical and food industries with the above-mentioned water transport, preservation, sustained releasing and selective releasing abilities. Abstract
Durable and environment friendly superhydrophobic surfaces are needed for a set of important applications. Biomedical applications, in particular, impose stringent requirements on the biocompatibility of the materials used in the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces. In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of mechanically durable superhydrophobic surfaces via an in-situ structuring strategy starting from natural carnauba wax and biocompatible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) materials. The transfer of the structure of the paper to a free-standing PDMS film provided the microscale structure. On top of this structured surface, the wax was spray-coated, initially resulting in a relatively homogeneous film with limited liquid repellence. The key in achieving superhydrophobicity was rubbing the surface for in-situ generation of a finely textured wax coating with a water contact angle of 169° and a sliding angle of 3°. The hierarchically structured surface exhibits mechanical robustness as demonstrated with water impact and linear abrasion tests. We finally demonstrate repellence of the surfaces against a range of blood products including platelet suspension, erythrocyte suspension, fresh plasma, and whole blood.

Abstract
Thermoplastic starch composites have attracted significant attention due to the rise of environmental pollutions induced by the use of synthetic petroleum-based polymer materials. The degradation of traditional plastics requires an unusually long time, which may lead to high cost and secondary pollution. To solve these difficulties, more petroleum-based plastics should be substituted with sustainable bio-based plastics. Renewable and natural materials that are abundant in nature are potential candidates for a wide range of polymers, which can be used to replace their synthetic counterparts. This paper focuses on some aspects of biopolymers and their classes, providing a description of starch as a main component of biopolymers, composites, and potential applications of thermoplastics starch-based in packaging application. Currently, biopolymer composites blended with other components have exhibited several enhanced qualities. The same behavior is also observed when natural fibre is incorporated with biopolymers. However, it should be noted that the degree of compatibility between starch and other biopolymers extensively varies depending on the specific biopolymer. Although their efficacy is yet to reach the level of their fossil fuel counterparts, biopolymers have made a distinguishing mark, which will continue to inspire the creation of novel substances for many years to come.

Abstract
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a polymer that has attracted the attention of researchers due to its unique properties such as transparency, biocompatibility, high flexibility, and physical and chemical stability. In addition, PDMS modification and combination with other materials can expand its range of applications. For instance, the ability to perform superhydrophobic coating allows for the manufacture of lenses. However, many of these processes are complex and expensive. One of the most promising modifications, which consists of the development of an interchangeable coating, capable of changing its optical characteristics according to some stimuli, has been underexplored. Thus, we report an experimental study of the mechanical and optical properties and wettability of pure PDMS and of two PDMS composites with the addition of 1% paraffin or beeswax using a gravity casting process. The composites’ tensile strength and hardness were lower when compared with pure PDMS. However, the contact angle was increased, reaching the highest values when using the paraffin additive. Additionally, these composites have shown interesting results for the spectrophotometry tests, i.e., the material changed its optical characteristics when heated, going from opaque at room temperature to transparent, with transmittance around 75%, at 70 °C. As a result, these materials have great potential for use in smart devices, such as sensors, due to its ability to change its transparency at high temperatures.

Abstract
The gradual depletion of petroleum is a main challenge restricting the development for the fine chemicals, such as epoxy resin adhesive. In this study, a novel lignin-containing high-performance epoxy resin adhesive is synthesized using lignin as precursor material. Lignin is a unique biomacromolecule with three dimensional network structure, large molecular weight, and aromatic structure. The lignin is simply hydrolyzed and modified by epichlorohydrin to obtain lignin-based epoxy prepolymer. The hydrolysis process effectively reduces the molecular weight and improves the chemical reactivity of lignin, thus increasing the number of modified functional groups and the dispersibility of lignin concurrently. With the introduction of the lignin-based epoxy prepolymers, the shear strength of the adhesive increases obviously and reaches 10.42 MPa, which displays 228% of the shear strength of commercial epoxy resin adhesives. Furthermore, the lignin-containing epoxy resin adhesive still displays excellent mechanical properties in extreme environments, including extreme temperature and high humidity environment.

Abstract
Edible, water-soluble, heat-sealable, and antioxidant films were developed from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) or soy protein isolate (SPI) and applied as safflower oil packaging. A 0.1 or 0.2% DL-α-tocopherol acetate (VE) and 0 or 0.25% oleic acid were added into film formulations to provide antioxidant and hydrophobic properties, respectively, using a 23 factorial design. Films were analyzed for appearance, microstructure, water and oil sensitivity, mechanical properties, and antioxidant functionality. Subsequently, a completely randomized design was implemented for incorporating 2, 4, or 6% cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs, w/w dry weight polymer) for improving film mechanical and barrier properties. HPMC-based films achieved full dissolution in water at <55 °C under 5 min, while SPI-based films disintegrated in water up to 90 °C. Oleic acid significantly increased (P < 0.05) heat sealability of SPI film from 78 to 143 N/m and elongation at break from 36% to 88%, but decreased tensile strength and heat sealability of HPMC films by 55% and 41%, respectively. As safflower oil packaging, after 60 days of storage at 35 °C, oil contained in SPI-based pouch had the lowest peroxide values, 8.1 ± 0.9 mEq/kg. Based on barrier, mechanical, and antioxidant capacity evaluations, HPMC film with 0.1% VE and SPI film with 0.25% oleic acid and 0.1% VE were incorporated with CNC. SPI/CNC films did not show observable trends, but HPMC/2% CNC film exhibited significantly improved mechanical and barrier properties, with oxygen permeability of 5.0 mL mm/m2 day kPa. The developed films are a promising packaging alternative to decrease plastic waste, extend shelf life of lipid-based foods, and increase consumer convenience. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Individually packaged, single-use pouches of sauce or oil are common for seasoning instant and frozen foods, creating unnecessary plastic waste. Edible, water-soluble packaging with antioxidant functionality would reduce plastic waste, extend shelf life by preventing oxidation, and increase consumer convenience. The biopolymeric films and pouches developed in this study have unique properties from water solubility across a wide range of temperatures, resistance to oil, high oxygen barrier, and good heat sealability, providing a variety of potential applications for promoting sustainable food packaging.

Abstract
In this study the Lagrange interpolation optimization algorithm based on two variables with respect to all experimental replicates (POA), was compared with two other heuristics methods (WOA and GOA). Modification of the apple surface by an edible nano coating solution in food packaging was used as case study. The experiment was performed as a factorial test based on completely randomized design by 100 permutations data sets. Results showed a significant difference between the three optimization methods (POA, WOA and GOA) which indicates the necessity of optimization and also efficiency of the present POA. The optimum result by POA, similar to a rose petal property, could rise 72% in surface contact angle (CA). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the derived surfaces showed almost a uniform spherical nanoparticles morphology. Remarkable advantages of this new approach are no additional material requirement, healthful, easy, inexpensive, fast and affordable technique for surface improvement.

Abstract
The traditional fluorinated porous material with super-hydrophobicity and super-oleophilicity is an effective strategy for oil-water separation. However, in recent years, fluorinated materials have been classified as "Emerging Environmental Pollutants" by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency because of difficult degradation and bio-accumulation. It is unacceptable to introduce new pollutants while solving environmental disasters. Therefore, it is great requirement to explore a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and renewable technique for the fabrication of novel porous materials with super-hydrophobicity and super-oleophilicity to separate oil-water mixtures. In this work, renewable beeswax, lignin, and cotton have been chosen to prepare the biomass-based porous materials with super-hydrophobicity and super-oleophilicity for oil-water separation. The mixture of beeswax and lignin is modified on the surface of cotton to obtain the biomass-based porous materials with super-hydrophobicity and super-oleophilicity. The beeswax and lignin provide low surface energy and micro/nanoscale structures, respectively. The introduction of lignin effectively improves the thermal stability of the porous materials. The apparent contact angle still remains to be above 150° after a long-time heating. The porous materials effectively separate oil-water mixtures and have good absorption effect for heavy oil (density greater than water). Moreover, the porous materials are easily recyclable after reactivation. This strategy of preparing oil-water separation materials from renewable natural polymers not only helps to clean the environment, but also helps to recover valuable oil.

Abstract
Inspired by nature's water-repellent plants, the superhydrophobic surface (SHS) and the lubricant-infused surface (LIS) possess potentials in various fields of application. In particular, the edible SHS and the edible LIS (ELIS) are suitable for the role of high-valued liquid food residue reduction. In this study, the ELIS was introduced through a facile spray method and direct lubricant infusion. Four types of ELISs were fabricated: carnauba wax with ethyl oleate infusion, carnauba wax with cooking oil infusion, beeswax with ethyl oleate infusion, and beeswax with cooking oil infusion. The carnauba wax-coated ELIS has better slipperiness, while the beeswax-coated ELIS has better transparency. The ethyl oleate-infused ELIS possesses ELIS to SHS transformable ability, and the cooking oil-infused ELIS also possesses better slipperiness and has the affordable advantage. Moreover, the material selection of ELIS is accessible, renewable, green, recyclable, and edible. The results illustrated that ELIS has advantages of long-term effectiveness and impact resistance over edible SHS and indicated that the ELIS can be facilitated for the manufacture of a multifunctional liquid residue reduction surface with food safety assurance.
