Exceptional adsorption of arsenic by zirconium metal-organic frameworks: Engineering exploration and mechanism insight

Harnessing wood bottom ash for efficient arsenic removal from wastewater: Adsorption mechanisms and process optimisation

This study explored the innovative application of wood bottom ash (WBA) as an adsorbent for arsenic (As) removal from wastewater, focusing on the adsorption mechanism and optimisation of the operational conditions. Comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including FE-SEM/EDS, BET, XRF, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS, were performed to examine the elemental and mineralogical changes in WBA before and after As adsorption. The study assessed the adsorption kinetics and isotherms, revealing that As adsorption reached equilibrium within 48 h, with a maximum capacity of 121.13 mg/g. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and aligned well with the Langmuir isotherm, indicating that the process is governed by chemisorption and occurs as monolayer adsorption. The primary removal mechanism was the surface precipitation of amorphous calcium arsenate. Response surface methodology was employed to analyse and optimise the factors influencing As removal, including solution pH, ionic strength, adsorbent dose and reaction time. The optimal conditions for maximum As removal were pH 7.11, 8.37 mM ionic strength, 9.08 g/L WBA dose, and 2.58 h reaction time. This study offers novel insights into the efficient and cost-effective use of WBA for As removal, highlighting its potential as a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment in developing countries.

Enhanced low-concentration phosphate adsorption using magnetic UiO-66@Fe3O4 composite with potential linker exchange

A magnetic FenUiO-66 adsorbent was created to achieve high phosphate adsorption capacity. The incorporation of Fe3O4 facilitated the precipitation and growth of UiO-66 during crystallization, resulting in a shift towards a multilayer heterogeneous distribution of adsorption sites. The increased Fe3O4 content notably enhanced the magnetic properties of FenUiO-66, while negligibly affecting its adsorption performance. The Fe1.5UiO-66 demonstrated exceptional phosphate adsorption capacity (136.54 mg/g), outstanding selectivity, and sustained reusability, with an 80% removal efficiency after nine cycles of treating actual water. The mechanism of phosphate adsorption by FenUiO-66 involved electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and linker exchange. Notably, while linker exchange significantly contributed to high adsorption capacity, it resulted in irreversible damage to the FenUiO-66 crystal. These unequivocal findings will serve as a solid foundation for further research and underline the critical role of linkers in the process of phosphate adsorption.

Efficient recovery of gold from solution with a thiocyanate-modified Zr-MOF: adsorption properties and DFT calculations

The design and development of new large-capacity and selective materials for extracting rare precious metals via electronic waste is practically essential. In this paper, a new efficient UiO-66-NCS has been obtained as a consequence of the modification of the classical Zr-MOF (UiO-66-NH2), and its ability to recover gold has been investigated. These batch results adequately illustrated that UiO-66-NCS exhibited good adsorption capacity (675.5 mg g-1) and exceptional selectivity. In addition, UiO-66-NCS achieved faster adsorption equilibrium times of about 120 min. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms demonstrated that the pseudo-second-order adsorption scheme and a Langmuir-type procedure were shown by the adsorption of Au(III) on UiO-66-NCS. Characterized by pH effect experiments, TEM, XRD, and XPS, the adsorption of UiO-66-NCS with Au(III) relies on coordination, which further results in reduction, and the generated Au(0) is uniformly dispersed in the MOF. The adsorbent has considerable advantages for cyclic regeneration. Finally, DFT fitting results showed that the adsorption binding energy of UiO-66-NCS with [AuCl4]- was -8.63 kcal mol-1 for the adsorption process. UiO-66-NCS is likely to be an ideal substance for gold recovery.

In situ synthesis of porous metal-organic frameworks NH2-UiO-66 on tea stem biochar and application in odours adsorption

Multiple odour nuisance in livestock farming is a notorious problem that has a significant impact on the living environment of surrounding communities. Adsorbents based on metal-organic framework (MOF) materials show great promise for controlling odour pollution, as they offer a high specific surface area, a controllable structure and an abundance of active sites. However, the MOF formation process is prone to problems such as pore clogging or collapse and reduced porosity, which limits its further application. In this study, a series of odour adsorbents were prepared by in situ growth of NH2-UiO-66 on tea stem biochar (TSBC) using a hydrothermal method and named UiO (Zr)-TSBCx. The physical and chemical properties and composition of UiO (Zr)-TSBCx have been systematically characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, N2 adsorption-desorption and XPS. The release of odours from the pig farm effluent was monitored using in-situ continuous Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS), and the obtained primary compositions were tested for further adsorption. In dynamic adsorption experiments focused on butyric acid, UiO (Zr)-TSBC2 showed a high adsorption capacity of 3.99 × 105 μg/g and exceptional structural stability. UiO (Zr)-TSBC2 showed variable adsorption efficiencies for different odorous gases, with the best performance for the removal of ammonia, toluene and butyric acid. It also demonstrated the ability to rapidly mitigate instantaneous high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methanethiol and toluene resulting from agitation. Additionally, based on the relationship between the adsorption amount and the structural characteristics of the adsorbent as well as the nature of the odours, a possible adsorption mechanism of UiO (Zr)-TSBC2 for a variety of odours released from pig farm effluent was proposed. This work demonstrates a novel approach to promote deodorization applications in livestock and poultry farming environments by the in-situ growth of NH2-UiO-66 on biochar prepared from tea stem.

Defect-Engineered Metal-Organic Framework/Polyimide Mixed Matrix Membrane for CO2 Separation

Defect-engineered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with outstanding structural and chemical features have become excellent candidates for specific separation applications. The introduction of structural defects in MOFs as an efficient approach to manipulate their functionality provides excellent opportunities for the preparation of MOF-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). However, the use of this strategy to adjust the properties and develop the separation performance of gas separation membranes is still in its early stages. Here, a novel defect-engineered MOF (quasi ZrFum or Q-ZrFum) was synthesized via a controlled thermal deligandation process and incorporated into a CO2-philic 6FDA-durene polyimide (PI) matrix to form Q-ZrFum loaded MMMs. Defect-engineered MOFs and fabricated MMMs were investigated regarding their characteristic properties and separation performance. The incorporation of defects into the MOF structure increases the pore size and provides unsaturated active metal sites that positively affect CO2 molecule transport. The interfacial compatibility between the Q-ZrFum particles and the PI matrix increases via the deligandation process, which improves the mechanical strength of Q-ZrFum loaded membranes. MMM containing 5 wt.% of defect-engineered Q-ZrFum exhibits excellent CO2 permeability of 1308 Barrer, which increased by 99 % compared to the pure PI membrane (656 Barrer) at a feed pressure of 2 bar. CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivity reached 44 and 26.6 which increased by about 70 and 16 %, respectively. This study emphasizes that defect-engineered MOFs can be promising candidates for use as fillers in the preparation of MMMs for the future development of membrane-based gas separation applications.

Two-dimensional photonic crystal sensor enabled by hydrophobic hydrogen-bonded organic Frameworks@Metal-Organic frameworks for trace nerve agents detection

The development of fast and accurate sensors for nerve agents holds immense significance for homeland security and public health. However, the humidity interference from ambient environments and poor sensitivity for trace nerve agents are largely unsolved problems. To overcome the problems, a humidity-independent two-dimensional photonic crystal (2-D PC) sensor is developed by exploiting UiO-66-NH2 2-D PC with excellent sensitivity coupled to a hydrophobic hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOFs) for detection sarin simulant dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP). Selective sensing results show that the HOFs@UiO-66-NH2 2-D PC sensor presents the outstanding DMMP specificity, and the limit of detection (LOD) for DMMP response of the sensor can reach 508 ± 68 ppb at room temperature. Water-resistant experiments demonstrate that the HOFs@UiO-66-NH2 2-D PC sensor shows excellent stability even under 80% relative humidity (RH). Moreover, the sensor also exhibits a rapid response/recovery time of 1 s/3 s and can maintain excellent sensing performance under heat-treatment of 200 °C and in the long-term storage (30 days). The adsorption kinetics and the hydrogen bond interaction are conducted to elucidate the mechanism of enhanced sensing DMMP properties. These results indicate the potential application of the sensor in the trace nerve agent's detection, especially in humidity environment.

Acyl chloride-mediated synthesis of rhodanine-modified UiO-66 for high-efficiency silver recovery

Silver (Ag) recovery is essential for ecological protection, human health and economic benefits. Effective capture of Ag(I) from wastewater is still challenging due to insufficient accessible sites of adsorbents. Herein, an acyl chloride-mediated strategy is developed to synthesize rhodanine (Rd) modified UiO-66 derivatives for Ag(I) adsorption. Benefitting from the high grafting density of Rd, the optimal Rd-modified UiO-66-NH2 (UiO-66-NH2@20Rd) features an ultra-high uptake capacity (maximum capacity of 923.9 mg·g-1) and selectivity (maximum selectivity coefficient of 1665.52) for Ag(I). Almost 90 % of Ag(I) could be captured in one minute over UiO-66-NH2@20Rd and maintained a removal rate of 98.9 % even after six cycles. Moreover, a fixed-bed column test demonstrates that approximately 21,780 bed volumes of Ag(I) simulated wastewater can be effectively treated, indicating great promise for practical application. Mechanism investigation illustrates that outstanding performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of Ag(I) adsorption and reduction on dense rhodanine sites. This study highlights that such a general strategy can provide a valuable avenue toward various functional adsorption materials.

Effective Technique and Mechanism for Simultaneous Adsorption of As(III/V) from Wastewater by Fe-ZIF-8@MXene

Arsenic (As) contamination of surface water has become a global concern, especially for the third world countries, and it is imperative to develop advanced materials and an effective treatment method to address the issue. In this paper, iron doped ZIF-8@MXene (Fe-ZIF-8@MXene) was prepared as a potential adsorbent to effectively and simultaneously remove As(III/V) from wastewater. To investigate this, Fe-ZIF-8@MXene was characterized before and after the removal of mixed As(III/V). The results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), specific surface area (BET) and point of zero charge (pHpzc) showed that Fe-ZIF-8@MXene was prepared successfully and kept a stable structure after As(III) and As(V) adsorption. The particle size of Fe-ZIF-8@MXene was in the range of 0.5 μm to 2.5 μm, where its BET was 531.7 m2/g. For both contaminants, adsorption was found to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics and was best-fitted by the Langmuir adsorption model with correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.998 and 0.997, for As(III) and As(V), respectively. The adsorbent was then applied to remove As from two actual water samples, giving maximum removal rates of 91.07% and 98.96% for As(III) and As(V), respectively. Finally, removal mechanisms for As(III/V) by Fe-ZIF-8@MXene were also explored. During the adsorption, multiple complexes were formed under the effect of its abundant surface functional groups involving multiple mechanisms, which included Van der Waals force, surface adsorption, chemical complexation and electrostatic interactions. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that Fe-ZIF-8@MXene was an advanced and reusable material for simultaneous removal of As(III/V) in wastewater.

Fe-based MOFs as promising adsorbents and photocatalysts for re-use water contained arsenic: Strategies and challenges

Arsenic (As) contaminated water, especially groundwater reservoirs, is a major issue worldwide owing to its hazardous consequences on human health and the global environment issues. Also, irrigating agricultural fields with As-contaminated water not only produces an accumulation of As in the soil but also compromises food safety due to As entering into agricultural products. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop an efficient method for As removal in water. Fe-based MOFs have attained special attention due to their low toxicity, high water stability, better physical and chemical properties, and high abundance of iron. The arsenic species removal by Fe-MOF follows the adsorption and oxidation mechanism where As (III) converts into As (V). Moreover, the adsorption mechanism is facilitated by electrostatic interactions, H-bonding, acid-base interaction, hydrophobic interactions, van der Waals forces, π-π stacking interactions, and coordinative bindings responsible for Fe-O-As bond generation. This review thoroughly recapitulates and analyses recent advancements in the facile synthesis and potential application of Fe-based MOF adsorbents for the elimination of As ions. The most commonly employed hydro/solvothermal, ultrasonic, microwave-assisted, mechanochemical, and electrochemical synthesis for Fe-MOF has been discussed along with their adsorptive and oxidative mechanisms involved in arsenic removal. The effects of factors like pH and coexisting ions have also been discussed. Lastly, the article also proposed the prospects for developing the application of Fe-based MOF in treating As-contaminated water.

Heavy metal sequestration from wastewater by metal-organic frameworks: a state-of-the-art review of recent progress

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater due to their tunable structures, high surface areas, and exceptional adsorption capacities. This review meticulously examines and summarizes recent advancements in producing and utilizing MOF-based adsorbents for sequestering heavy metal ions from water. It begins by outlining and contrasting commonly employed methods for synthesizing MOFs, such as solvothermal, microwave, electrochemical, ultrasonic, and mechanochemical. Rather than delving into the specifics of adsorption process parameters, the focus shifts to analyzing the adsorption capabilities and underlying mechanisms against critical metal(loid) ions like chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury under various environmental conditions. Additionally, this article discusses strategies to optimize MOF performance, scale-up production, and address environmental implications. The comprehensive review aims to enhance the understanding of MOF-based adsorption for heavy metal remediation and stimulate further research in this critical field. In brief, this review article presents a comprehensive overview of the contemporary information on MOFs as an effective adsorbent and the challenges being faced by these adsorbents for heavy metal mitigation (including stability, cost, environmental issues, and optimization), targeting to develop a vital reference for future MOF research.

Application of valence-variable transition-metal-oxide-based nanomaterials in electrochemical analysis: A review

The construction of materials with rapid electron transfer is considered an effective method for enhancing electrochemical activity in electroanalysis. It has been widely demonstrated that valence changes in transition metal ions can promote electron transfer and thus increase electrochemical activity. Recently, valence-variable transition metal oxides (TMOs) have shown popular application in electrochemical analysis by using their abundant valence state changes to accelerate electron transfer during electrochemical detection. In this review, we summarize recent research advances in valence changes of TMOs and their application in electrochemical analysis. This includes the definition and mechanism of valence change, the association of valence changes with electronic structure, and their applications in electrochemical detection, along with the use of density functional theory (DFT) to simulate the process of electron transfer during valence changes. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for developing and applying valence changes in electrochemical analysis are also identified.

A mechanistic approach to arsenic adsorption and immobilization in aqueous solution, groundwater, and contaminated paddy soil using pine-cone magnetic biochar

Arsenic (As) poisoning in groundwater and rice paddy soil has increased globally, impacting human health and food security. There is an urgent need to deal with As-contaminated groundwater and soil. Biochar can be a useful remedy for toxic contaminants. This study explains the synthesis of pinecone-magnetic biochar (PC-MBC) by engineering the pinecone-pristine biochar with iron salts (FeCl3.6H2O and FeSO4.7H2O) to investigate its effects on As(V) adsorption and immobilization in water and soil, respectively. The results indicated that PC-MBC can remediate As(V)-contaminated water, with an adsorption capacity of 12.14 mg g-1 in water. Isotherm and kinetic modeling showed that the adsorption mechanism involved multilayer, monolayer, and diffusional processes, with chemisorption operating as the primary interface between As(V) and biochar. Post-adsorption analysis of PC-MBC, using FTIR and XRD, further revealed chemical fixing and outer-sphere complexation between As(V) and Fe, O, NH, and OH as the main reasons for As(V) adsorption onto PC-MBC. Recycling of PC-MBC also had excellent adsorption even after several regeneration cycles. Similarly, PC-MBC successfully immobilized As in paddy soil. Single and sequential extraction results showed the transformation of mobile forms of As to a more stable form, confirmed by non-destructive analysis using SEM, EDX, and elemental dot mapping. Thus, Fe-modified pine-cone biochar could be a suitable and cheap adsorbent for As-contaminated water and soil.

Design and application of metal organic frameworks for heavy metals adsorption in water: a review

The growing apprehension surrounding heavy metal pollution in both environmental and industrial contexts has spurred extensive research into adsorption materials aimed at efficient remediation. Among these materials, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have risen as versatile and promising contenders due to their adjustable properties, expansive surface areas, and sustainable characteristics, compared to traditional options like activated carbon and zeolites. This exhaustive review delves into the synthesis techniques, structural diversity, and adsorption capabilities of MOFs for the effective removal of heavy metals. The article explores the evolution of MOF design and fabrication methods, highlighting pivotal parameters influencing their adsorption performance, such as pore size, surface area, and the presence of functional groups. In this perspective review, a thorough analysis of various MOFs is presented, emphasizing the crucial role of ligands and metal nodes in adapting MOF properties for heavy metal removal. Moreover, the review delves into recent advancements in MOF-based composites and hybrid materials, shedding light on their heightened adsorption capacities, recyclability, and potential for regeneration. Challenges for optimization, regeneration efficiency and minimizing costs for large-scale applications are discussed.

Recent Development of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification

Water contamination is an increasing concern to mankind because of the increasing amount of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. To purify the polluted water, various techniques have been used to remove hazardous components. Unfortunately, traditional cleanup techniques with a low uptake capacity are unable to achieve water purification. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently shown potential in effective water pollutant isolation in terms of selectivity and adsorption capacity over traditional porous materials. The high surface area and versatile functionality of MOFs allow for the development of new adsorbents. The development of MOFs in a range of water treatments in the recent five years will be highlighted in this review, along with assessments of the adsorption performance relevant to the particular task. Moreover, the outlook on future opportunities for water purification using MOFs is also provided.

Regulating ion affinity and dehydration of metal-organic framework sub-nanochannels for high-precision ion separation

Membrane consisting of ordered sub-nanochannels has been pursued in ion separation technology to achieve applications including desalination, environment management, and energy conversion. However, high-precision ion separation has not yet been achieved owing to the lack of deep understanding of ion transport mechanism in confined environments. Biological ion channels can conduct ions with ultrahigh permeability and selectivity, which is inseparable from the important role of channel size and "ion-channel" interaction. Here, inspired by the biological systems, we report the high-precision separation of monovalent and divalent cations in functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes (UiO-66-(X)2, X = NH2, SH, OH and OCH3). We find that the functional group (X) and size of the MOF sub-nanochannel synergistically regulate the ion binding affinity and dehydration process, which is the key in enlarging the transport activation energy difference between target and interference ions to improve the separation performance. The K+/Mg2+ selectivity of the UiO-66-(OCH3)2 membrane reaches as high as 1567.8. This work provides a gateway to the understanding of ion transport mechanism and development of high-precision ion separation membranes.

Surface plasmon resonance Bismuth-modified NH2-UiO-66 with enhanced photocatalytic tetracycline degradation performance

For nearly a century, the misuse of antibiotics has gradually polluted water and threatened human health. Photocatalysis is considered an efficient way to remove antibiotics from water. Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks have attracted much attention as promising photocatalysts for the degradation of antibiotics. However, single Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks can still not achieve a more satisfactory photocatalytic efficiency, due to poor light absorption and charge separation efficiency. In this study, a novel metal-loaded metal-organic frameworks material was explored. As a potential photocatalytic material, the performance of NH2-UiO-66 in the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline was greatly improved just by the loading of a single metal. Bismuth/NH2-UiO-66 photocatalysts of various compositions were physicochemically (TEM, SEM, XRD, XPS, BET, FTIR, UV-VIS, PL), and electrochemically (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, photocurrent response) characterized. We evaluated the photocatalytic performance of Bismuth/NH2-UiO-66 composites by measuring their ability towards tetracycline decomposition in simulated sunlight irradiation conditions. The experimental results indicated that the introduction of metal Bismuth significantly boosts the photocatalytic activity of the composite catalysts. The final degradation rate of Bismuth/NH2-UiO-66 for tetracycline was found to be 95.8%, namely 2.7 times higher than pure NH2-UiO-66. This behavior is due to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Bismuth, which ameliorates the photocatalyst's electron-hole separation and strengthens the charge transfer. Apart from that, the presence of Bismuth magnifies the visible-light absorption range of Bismuth/NH2-UiO-66. In this study, an innovative approach for designing efficient and cost-effective metal-modified metal-organic frameworks photocatalysts is proposed.

Nanoconfinement boosts affinity of hydrated zirconium oxides to arsenate: Surface complexation modeling study

Nanoscale hydrated zirconium oxide (HZO) holds great potential in groundwater purification due to its ability to form inner-sphere coordination with arsenate. Despite being frequently used, especially as encapsulations in host materials for practical application in water treatment, the adsorption mechanisms of solutes on HZO are not appropriately explored, in particular for arsenate adsorption. In this study, we investigated the Zr-As coordination configuration and identified the most credible Zr-As configuration using surface complexation modeling (SCM), XPS and FT-IR analysis. The corresponding intrinsic coordination constants (Kintr) values was calculated by SCM, and the nanoconfinement effects were distinguished by comparing bare HZO with the HZO nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated inside the strongly basic anion exchanger D201. Potentiometric titration suggests that the surface Zirconium hydroxyl groups (≡ZrOH) mainly exist in protonated form (≡ZrOH2+). Batch adsorption experiments demonstrate that the D201 hosts could adsorb As(V) through ion exchange by the quaternary ammonium groups under the low ionic strength (≤0.01 M NaNO3) and at pH > 6. The nanocomposite (HZO@D201) exhibits a higher adsorption capacity in a wide range of pH (3-10) and ionic strength (0.001-0.1 M NaNO3) than bare HZO. SCM simulations reveal that the coordination configuration of diprotonated monodentate mononuclear (MM-H2) dominates at pH 3-6, while deprotonated bidentate binuclear (BB-H0) dominates at pH > 7. For each configuration, the intrinsic coordination constants (Kintr) of HZO@D201 (10-0.66 and 10-16.10, respectively) are significantly higher than those of bare HZO (10-12.24 and 10-44.42, respectively), indicating a superior chemical bonding affinity caused by nanoconfinement. The obtained Kintr values are used to predict arsenate adsorption isotherms in pH 3 and 9, and the results align with the SCM simulation outcomes. This study may offer a feasible method for investigating the nanoconfinement effect of emerging nanocomposite adsorbents from a thermodynamic perspective, and provide reference coordination equilibrium constants of HZO for research and practical application.

Evaluating the Role of Functional Groups in the Selective Capture of Ag(I) onto UiO-66-Type Metal-Organic Frameworks

UiO-66-type metal-organic frameworks have been considered as promising adsorbents for capturing Ag(I) from wastewater. However, uncertainties persist regarding the specific absorptivity of individual functional groups to the UiO-66 framework structure. In this study, UiO-66-type metal-organic frameworks (UiO-66-X), featuring diverse functional groups (X = -(OH)2, -(COOH)2, -NO2, -NH2, -SO3H, -(SH)2), were synthesized in situ for Ag(I) capture. The findings revealed that functionalization significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of Ag(I). Notably, quantitative analysis showed that 1 mol of -SH functional group onto the UiO-66 framework structure can adsorb 0.73 mol of Ag(I) ions, surpassing those of -COOH, -OH, -NH2, -SO3H, and -NO2 by 2.4-, 3.5-, 3.8-, 9.1-, and 24.3-fold, respectively. This represents the first assessment of the adsorption capacity of functionalized UiO-66 for Ag(I) based on each effective functional group, addressing limitations in traditional unit mass calculations. Further, the adsorption mechanism of UiO-66-X for selectively capturing Ag(I) was elucidated through experimental and theoretical analyses. Additionally, selectivity and practical applications confirm that UiO-66-(SH)2 exhibits strong anti-interference ability, whether in natural water bodies with complex compositions or in industrial wastewater under harsh conditions. We anticipate that this study will enhance our understanding of structure-performance dependencies of multivariate MOFs for designing novel adsorbents for Ag(I) capture.

Sulfhydryl-Functionalized Amino Group Polymer Microcomposites toward Efficient Adsorption of Aqueous Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II)

The development of efficient adsorbents for heavy metal pollution, especially five toxic heavy metals, has attracted great research interest. Polymer-based adsorbents have aroused research value for their abundant functional groups and high porosity to the ability to capture metal ions. We designed a sulfhydryl-functionalized polymer microcomposite to take up Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The adsorption capacity achieved was 64.2 mg g-1 for Cr(VI), 44.9 mg g-1 for As(III), 35.5 mg g-1 for Cd(II), and 18.2 mg g-1 for Pb(II). Langmuir and Sips isotherm model is dominant for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) adsorption. Pseudo-second-order kinetic models can better describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI), implying that chemisorption is accompanied by Cr(VI) adsorption. Cr(VI) simultaneous reduction to Cr(III) through the benzenoid amine oxidate pathway was the dominant mechanism, precipitation for Cd(II) adsorption was convinced, and chelation between As(III)/Pb(II) and─SH group and complexation between Pb(II) and C═O or benzene hydroxyl were a plausible mechanism for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption.

Boosting photocatalytic H2 evolution on UIO-66-NH2/covalent triazine-based frameworks composites by constructing a covalent heterojunction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been proved as efficient catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution, thanks to their tunable functionalities, permanent porosity, excellent visible light response, and physicochemical stability. Herein, a series of photocatalysts (termed NUBC) was fabricated by loading different amounts of Zr-UiO-66-NH2 (NU) onto a benzoic acid-modified covalent triazine-based framework (BC) based on post-synthetic covalent modification. The resulting NUBC catalysts exhibited a type-II Z-scheme heterojunction structure formed via the amide covalent bonds between the amine groups on NU and carboxyl groups on BC. The optimal loading of NU on BC is 30 wt.% (30NUBC) and the corresponding photocatalytic H2 evolution rate was 378 μmol h-1 g-1, almost 445 and 2 times than that of NU and BC, respectively. The synergistic effect between the type-II Z-scheme heterojunctions and amide bonds was conducive to boosting visible light harvesting and facilitating charge transportation and separation. Furthermore, the prepared NUBC catalysts show great reusability and stability. Overall, this work sheds light on the design of novel MOF/COF hybrid materials and provides a systematic exploration of their photocatalytic H2 evolution properties.

Insights into the statistical physics modeling and fractal like kinetic approach for the adsorption of As(III) on coordination polymer gel based on zirconium(IV) and 2-thiobarbituric acid

A novel coordination polymer gel based on zirconium(IV) and 2-thiobarbituric (ZrTBA) was synthesized and explored its potential to remediate As(III) from water. Box-Behnken design with desirability function and genetic algorithm yielded the optimized conditions (initial concentration=194 mg L^-1, dosage = 42.2 mg, time= 95 min and pH = 4.9) for maximum removal efficiency (99.19 %). The experimental saturation capacity for As(III) was 178.30 mg g^-1. The steric parameter n > 1 of the best fitted statistical physics model: monolayer with two energies (R² = 0.987-0.992) suggested multimolecular mechanism with vertical orientation of As(III) molecules onto the two active sites. XPS and FTIR confirmed the two active sites being zirconium and oxygen. The adsorption energies (E₁ = 35.81-37.63 kJ/mol; E₂ = 29.50-36.49 kJ/mol) and isosteric heat of adsorption indicated that physical forces governed the As(III) uptake. DFT calculations implied that the weak electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding were involved. The best fitted (R²>0.99) fractal like pseudo first order model established energetic heterogeneity. ZrTBA showed excellent removal efficiency in the presence of potential interfering ions and could be used up to 5 cycles of adsorption-desorption with < 8 % loss in the efficiency. ZrTBA removed ≥96.06 % As(III) from real water samples spiked at different levels of As(III).

Facile fabrication of Fe/Zr binary MOFs for arsenic removal in water: High capacity, fast kinetics and good reusability

A water-stable bimetallic Fe/Zr metal-organic framework [UiO-66(Fe/Zr)] for exceptional decontamination of arsenic in water was fabricated through a facile one-step strategy. The batch adsorption experiments revealed the excellent performances with ultrafast adsorption kinetics due to the synergistic effects of two functional centers and large surface area (498.33 m²/g). The absorption capacity of UiO-66(Fe/Zr) for arsenate [As(V)] and arsenite [As(III)] reached as high as 204.1 mg/g and 101.7 mg/g, respectively. Langmuir model was suitable to describe the adsorption behaviors of arsenic on UiO-66(Fe/Zr). The fast kinetics (adsorption equilibrium in 30 min, 10 mg/L As) and pseudo-second-order model implied the strong chemisorption between arsenic ions and UiO-66(Fe/Zr), which was further confirmed by DFT theoretical calculations. The results of FT-IR, XPS analysis and TCLP test demonstrated that arsenic was immobilized on the surface of UiO-66(Fe/Zr) through Fe/Zr-O-As bonds, and the leaching rates of the adsorbed As(III) and As(V) from the spent adsorbent were only 5.6% and 1.4%, respectively. UiO-66(Fe/Zr) can be regenerated for five cycles without obvious removal efficiency decrease. The original arsenic (1.0 mg/L) in lake and tap water was effectively removed in 2.0 hr [99.0% of As(III) and 99.8% of As(V)]. The bimetallic UiO-66(Fe/Zr) has great potentials in water deep purification of arsenic with fast kinetics and high capacity.

Selective Adsorption Behavior and Mechanism for Cd(II) in Aqueous Solution with a Recoverable Magnetie-Surface Ion-Imprinted Polymer

A novel recoverable magnetic Cd(II) ion-imprinted polymer was synthesized on the surface of silica-coated Fe₃O₄ particles via the surface imprinting technique and chemical grafting method. The resulting polymer was used as a highly efficient adsorbent for the removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption experiments revealed that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@IIP had a maximum adsorption capacity of up to 29.82 mg·g^-1 for Cd(II) at an optimal pH of 6, with the adsorption equilibrium achieved within 20 min. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of Cd(II) on the imprinted polymer was spontaneous and entropy-increasing. Furthermore, the Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@IIP could rapidly achieve solid-liquid separation in the presence of an external magnetic field. More importantly, despite the poor affinity of the functional groups constructed on the polymer surface for Cd(II), we improved the specific selectivity of the imprinted adsorbent for Cd(II) through surface imprinting technology. The selective adsorption mechanism was verified by XPS and DFT theoretical calculations.

Enhanced arsenite removal from water using zirconium-ferrocene MOFs coupled with peroxymonosulfate:oxidation and multi-sites adsorption mechanism

The efficient removal of arsenite (As(III)) poses a significant challenge to traditional water treatment technologies due to its high toxicity and mobility. In this work, multifunctional Zirconium-Ferrocene Metal Organic Framework (ZrFc-MOF) fabricated with redox-active 1,1-ferrocene dicarboxylic acid ligands and Zr⁴⁺ precursors were elaborated to achieve remarkably enhanced As(III) removal via activation by peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The adsorption affinity coefficient increased from 0.097 to 2.035 L mg^-1 and the maximum adsorption capacity increased from 59.79 to 111.34 mg g^-1 compared with that without PMS. Besides the conventional homogeneous PMS oxidation and the following adsorption through Zr-O clusters of ZrFc-MOFs, the enhanced As(III) removal synergistic combines the oxidation mechanism of As(III) by reactive oxygen species (•OH, SO₄^•-, O₂^•- and ¹O₂) formed in Ferrocene (Fc) activating PMS process with the simultaneous formed extra adsorption sites of Ferrocenium (Fc⁺). PMS also help ZrFc-MOF to avoid destruction in harsh alkaline condition, making the effluent in this advanced treatment meet the World Health Organization (WHO) threshold of 10 μg L^-1 over a wide range of initial pH (2-11) with high selectivity and durability. These results indicate that this novel Fc-based MOFs activating PMS system has potential applicability for As(III) in oxidation and selectively capturing in the water environment.

FeSx@MOF-808 composite for efficient As(III) removal from wastewater: behavior and mechanism

Arsenic is extremely toxic to humans with water as its carrier. One challenge for arsenic control is the complete elimination of As(III) due to its high toxicity, mobility, and solubility. Herein, an active FeS_x@MOF-808 composite was fabricated to enhance the As(III) removal for wastewater remediation. The FeS_x@MOF-808 showed better As(III) adsorptive performance (Q_e = 73.60 mg/g) compared with Fe₂S₃ (Q_e=12.38 mg/g), MOF-808 (Q_e = 27.85 mg/g), and Fe@MOF-808 (Q_e=34.26 mg/g). This can be attributed to an improved porous structure provided by MOF-808 and abundant reactive sites provided by FeS_x. Calculated by the Langmuir model (R² =0.9965), the maximum adsorption capacity (Q_max) of FeS_x@MOF-808 for As(III) removal at 298 K and pH = 7 was 203.28 ± 6.43 mg/g, which is beyond most of the traditional materials and MOFs. Additionally, FeS_x@MOF-808 exhibited good stability in a wide pH range (1-13). Results also showed that the different Fe/S ratios (1:0-1:8) and FeS_x loading amount (0.00625-0.25 mmol) have effects on the FeS_x@MOF-808 performance. By kinetics studies, XPS, and DFT calculation, the mechanisms for arsenic by FeS_x@MOF-808 were proposed. Multiple reaction mechanisms combine the adsorption by the MOF-808 support, the co-precipitation of iron oxides via hydroxyl (Fe-OH) groups, and most importantly, the precipitation through the break of Fe-S and the bond of As-S.

Macroporous honeycomb-like magnesium oxide fabricated as long-life and outstanding Pb(II) adsorbents combined with mechanism insight

The macroporous honeycomb-like MgO (MHM) had been successfully prepared by hard template method using polystyrene (PS) spheres with different particle sizes of about 400, 600, and 800 nm, respectively. The adsorption performance (3700, 3470, and 3087 mg/g) and specific surface areas (64.0, 51.4, and 34.4 m2/g) of MHM materials were inversely proportional to their pore diameters. Among the prepared MHM materials, MHM-400 exhibited the most excellent adsorption performance of 3700 mg/g towards Pb(II) at 25 °C. In this study, the macropore size in MHM played a major role in the adsorption process; Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model further indicated that Pb(II) removal by MHM-400 was dominated by chemical adsorption. The thermodynamic analysis (ΔG0 < 0, ΔH0 > 0, and ΔS0 > 0) revealed that the Pb(II) adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. After storing for 360 days, the Pb(II) removal efficiency of MHM-400 was still higher than 98.2%, exhibiting ultra-long life for Pb(II) capture. MHM-400 also exhibited high anti-interference ability towards typically coexisting ions (Na+ and K+). According to the density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the Pb could be adsorbed on the top site of the oxygen atom at the surface of the cubic MgO (200) plane; the adsorption energy (Ead) was 0.159 eV. The XRD and FTIR analyses revealed the further formation of Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2 and PbO after Pb(II) adsorption. Furthermore, MHM-400 could effectively remove both Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from wastewater within 20 min, and the adsorption efficiency achieved > 99%, suggesting that MHM-400 was a potential material for effective Pb(II) removal.

A review on multi-synergistic transition metal oxide systems towards arsenic treatment: Near molecular analysis of surface-complexation (synchrotron studies/modeling tools)

The science and interface chemistry between the arsenic (As) anions and the different adsorbent systems have been gaining interest in recent years in environmental remediation applications. Metal-oxides and the corresponding hybrid systems have shown promising performance as novel adsorbents in various treatment technologies. The abundance, surface chemistry, high surface area (active-centres), various synthesis and functionalization methodologies, and good recyclability make these metal oxide-based nanomaterials as potential remediating agents for As oxyanions. This work critically reviews eight different platforms focused on the arsenic contamination issue, where the first classification describes the origin of arsenic contamination and presents geographical and demo-graphical considerations. The following section briefs the state-of-the-art remediation techniques for arsenic treatment with a comparative evaluation. An emphasized discussion has been provided regarding the adsorption and classification of various metal oxide adsorbents. In the next classification, various multi-synergism abilities like Redox activity, Surface functional groups, Surface area/morphology, Heterogeneous catalysis, Reactive oxygen species, Photo-catalytic/electro-catalytic reactions, and Electrosorption are detailed. The classification of various characterization tools for accessing the arsenic remediation qualitatively and quantitatively are given in the fifth chapter. The first-of-its-kind dedicated analysis has been given on the surface complexation aspects of the arsenic speciation onto various metal adsorbent systems using synchrotron results, surface-complexation modeling, and molecular simulation (e.g., DFT) in the sixth chapter. The current sensing applications of these novel nano-material systems for arsenic determination using colorimetric and electrochemical-based analytical tools and a note about the economic parameters, i.e., regeneration aspects of various adsorbent systems/the sustainable applications of the treated sludge materials, are provided in the final sections. This work makes a critical analysis of 'Environmental Nanotechnology' towards 'Arsenic Treatment'.

Effective biosorption of As(V) from polluted water using Fe(III)-modified Pomelo (Citrus maxima) peel: A batch, column, and thermodynamic study

Pomelo, Citrus maxima, peel was chemically modified with lime water and then loaded with Fe(III) to develop anion exchange sites for effective sequestration of As(V) from water. Biosorbent characterizations were done by using FTIR, SEM, XRD, EDX, and Boehm's titration. The batch biosorption studies were carried out at various pHs using modified and non-modified biosorbents and optimum biosorption of As(V) occurred at acidic pH (3.0-5.0) for both the biosorbents. A kinetic study showed a fast biosorption rate and obtained results fitted well with the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model. When isotherm data were modeled using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, the Langmuir isotherm model fit the data better and produced maximal As(V) biosorption capacities of 0.72 ± 03, 0.86 ± 06, and 0.95 ± 05 mmol/g at temperatures 293± 1K, 298± 1K and 303± 1K, respectively. Desorptionof As(V) was effective using 0.1 M NaOH in batch mode. Negative values of ΔG° for all temperatures with positive ΔH° confirmed the spontaneous and endothermic nature of As(V) biosorption. The existence of co-existing chloride (Cl^-), nitrate (NO₃ ^-), sodium (Na⁺), and calcium (Ca²⁺) showed insignificant interference whereas a high concentration of sulphate (SO₄ ^2-) and phosphate (PO₄ ^3-) significantly lowered As(V) biosorption percentage. Arsenic concentrations in actual arsenic polluted groundwater could be reduced to the WHO drinking water standard (10 μg/L) by using only 1 g/L of investigated Fe(III)-SPP. The dynamic biosorption of As(V) in a fixed bed system showed that Fe(III)-SPP was effective also in continuous mode and different design parameters for fixed bed system were determined using Thomas, Adams-Bohart, BDST, and Yoon-Nelson models. Therefore, from all of these results it is suggested that Fe(III)-SPP investigated in this study can be a potential, low cost and environmentally benign biosorbent material for an effective removal of trace amounts of arsenic from polluted water.

A Single Aptamer-Dependent Sandwich-Type Biosensor for the Colorimetric Detection of Cancer Cells via Direct Coordinately Binding of Bare Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework-Based Nanozymes

A typical colorimetric sandwich-type sensor relies on dual antibodies/aptamers to specifically visualize the targets. The requirement of dual antibodies/aptamers and low signal intensity inevitably increases the design difficulty and compromises the sensing sensitivity. In this work, a novel sandwich-type aptasensor was developed using single aptamer-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles as a specific recognition unit to target cancer cells and a bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based nanozymes as a colorimetric signal amplification unit. The well-defined crystalline structure of UIO-66 MOFs enabled the introduction of Fe/Zr bimetal nodes, which possessed integrated properties of the peroxidase-like nanozyme activity and direct coordinately binding to the cell surface. Such a novel construction strategy of sandwich-type aptasensors achieved simple, sensitive, and specific detection of the target cancer cells, which will inspire the development of biosensors.

A metal-organic framework surrounded with conjugate acid-base pairs for the efficient capture of Cr(VI) via hydrogen bonding over a wide pH range

Given the large amount of toxic Cr(VI) wastewater from various industries, it is urgent to take effective treatment measures. Adsorption has been regarded as highly desirable for Cr(VI) removal, but the effectiveness of most adsorbents is significantly dependent on pH value, in which precipitous performance drop and even structural collapse generally occur in strong acidic/alkaline aqueous. Thus, maintaining high adsorption performance and structural integrity over a wide pH range is challenging. To efficiently remove Cr(VI), we designed and prepared of an acid-base resistant metal-organic framework (MOF) Zr-BDPO, by introducing weak acid-base groups (-NH-, -N= and -OH) onto the ligand. Zr-BDPO achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 555.6 mg·g^-1 and retained skeletal structure at pH= 1-11. Interestingly, all these groups can generate conjugate acid-base pairs by means of H⁺ and OH^- in the external solution and then form buffer layer. The removal of Cr(VI) at a broad range of pH values primarily via hydrogen bonds between -NH- and -OH, and the oxoanion species of Cr(VI) is unusual. This strategy that insulating high concentrations of acids and bases and relying on hydrogen bonds to capture Cr(VI) oxoanions provides a new perspective for actual Cr(VI) wastewater treatment.

Arsenic and cadmium leaching in co-contaminated agronomic soil and the influence of high rainfall and amendments

Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) co-contaminate agricultural systems worldwide and threaten water resources, food security and human health. This column leaching study examined As and Cd mobility in an acidic sandy loam Alfisol soil collected from the dry zone of Sri Lankafor four co-contaminant concentration combinations (spiked and 1 year aged As at 20 & 100 mg kg^-1 with co-added Cd at 3 & 20 mg kg^-1) i, and under the influence of high rainfall (RF), phosphorus fertilizer (P) and lime amendments. In almost all treatments a synergistic co-contaminant adsorption effect was evident which reduced leaching of both elements, significantly in the higher spiked soil concentration treatments. The magnitude of leaching decrease varied with treatment but was greater for As due to its weaker retention in the soil. The co-sorbing effects, evident even under RF, were attributed to electrostatic sorption interactions, the formation of ternary bridging complexes and surface precipitation at higher concentrations. Liming significantly retarded mobilisation of both elements in all treatments, whereas P enhanced As leaching but suppressed Cd leaching, and both amendments moderated co-contaminant effects. An antagonistic effect of Cd on As sorption was evident in two treatments which showed increased As leaching with added Cd: the RF low spike concentration treatment, accredited to washout of stable As-Cd soluble complexes; the P high concentration treatment considered due to P disruption of As-Cd bridging complexes. This work is important for effective risk mitigation in these widely occurring co-contaminated agronomic systems, and demonstrates a strong system effect on synergistic or antagonistic co-contaminant interactions.

Development of novel MOF-mixed matrix three-dimensional membrane capsules for eradicating potentially toxic metals from water and real electroplating wastewater

The stability and applicability of UiO-66-(NH₂)₂ metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully improved in this study by incorporating them into alginate biopolymer during the manifestation of crosslinking agents-calcium chloride and glutaraldehyde-via a simple, environment-friendly, and facile approach to eradicate potentially toxic metals (PTMs) such as Cr⁶⁺, Cr³⁺, Cu²⁺, and Cd²⁺ from water and real electroplating wastewater. Hydrophilic functional groups (i.e., -OH, -COOH, and -NH₂) are imperative in the smooth loading of UiO-66-(NH₂)₂ MOF- NPs into three-dimensional (3-D) membrane capsules (MCs). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results suggested that UiO-66-(NH₂)₂ MOF was effectively bonded in/on the capsule via electrostatic crosslinking between -H₃N⁺ and -COO^-. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed a porous honeycomb configuration of the 3-D SGMMCs (S: sodium alginate, G: glutaraldehyde, M: MOF NPs, and MCs: membrane capsules). The maximum monolayer absorption capacities for Cr⁶⁺, Cr³⁺, Cu²⁺, and Cd²⁺ were 495, 975, 1295, and 1350 mg/g, respectively. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and XPS analyses showed that electrostatic attraction and ion exchange were the main processes for PTM removal used by the as-developed 3-D SGMMCs. The as-developed 3-D SGMMCs exhibited outstanding selectivity for removing the targeted PTMs under the specified pH/conditions and maintained >80% removal efficiency for up to six consecutive treatment cycles. Notably, > 60% removal efficiencies for Cr⁶⁺ and Cu²⁺ were observed when treating real electroplating wastewater. Therefore, the as-developed 3-D SGMMCs can be used as an exceptional multifunctional sorbent to remove and recover PTMs from real electroplating wastewater.

Manganese stabilization in mine tailings by MgO-loaded rice husk biochar: Performance and mechanisms

Leachable metal in abandoned mine tailings may be toxic to vegetation, affecting effective ecological restoration. In this study, MRB was synthesized through MgCl₂·6H₂O wet impregnation followed by duplicate slow pyrolysis. Manganese tailings were mixed with MRB, rice husk biochar (RB), and MgO at a dosage of 0-5%, followed by 90-day incubation. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure and sequential leaching were used to analyze the leachability and species of Mn in tailings, while a stabilization mechanism was proposed with the support of the characterization of the tailings before and after amendment. Results suggested MRB addition significantly decreased leachable Mn by 63.8%, reducing from 59.88 mg/L to 21.68 mg/L, while only a 14.39% reduction was achieved by rice husk biochar (RB). The sharp decline of leachable Mn after 90-day mixing was contributed by the transformation from labile to stable fractions. A microporous biochar matrix along with the uniform dispersion of MgO active component were both responsible for the better Mn stabilization. Only less than 10% of the variation in substrate pH was observed with the increase of MgO loading or incubation time. Linear correlation analyses indicated substrate pH's strongl negative relationship with leachable Mn and moderately positive relationship with residual fraction. Characterization results revealed that MRB exhibited different stabilization mechanisms in mine tailings, where Mn was likely to be stabilized by direct interaction with active MgO or indirect alkaline precipitation to form stable MgMn₂O₄, Mn(CH₃COO)_2, and MnO(OH)₂. This work validated the promoting potential of recycling agricultural biomass waste for the amendment of manganese mine tailings.

Exceptional removal and immobilization of selenium species by bimetal-organic frameworks

Binary metallic organic frameworks can always play excellent functions for pollutants removal. One binary MOFs, UiO-66(Fe/Zr)), was newly synthesized and applied to remove aquatic selenite (SeIV) and selenate (SeVI). The adsorption behaviors and mechanisms were investigated using batch experiments, spectroscopic analyses, and theoretical calculations (DFT). The characterization results showed that the material inherited the topological structure of UiO-66 and excellent thermal stability. The large specific surface area (467.52 m²/g) and uniform mesoporous structures of the synthesized MOFs resulted in fast adsorption efficiency and high adsorption capacity for selenium species. The adsorbent kept high adsorption efficiency in a wide pH range from 2 to 11 with good anti-interference ability. The maximum adsorption capacity for Se(IV) and Se(VI) reached as high as 196 mg/g at pH 3 and 258 mg/g at pH 5, respectively. The process was conformed to fit pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm, and could be explained by the formation of Fe/Zr-O-Se bond on the material surface, which was interpreted by the results of XPS, FTIR and DFT calculation. The regeneration and TCLP experiments demonstrated that UiO-66(Fe/Zr) could be regenerated for five cycles without obvious decrease of efficiencies, and the leaching rate of the adsorbed Se(IV) and Se(VI) in the spent adsorbent were only 4.8% and 2.3%. More than 99% of original Se(IV) and Se(VI) in the lake and tap water samples (1.0 mg/L of Se) could be removed in 2.0 h.

Machine learning approaches for predicting arsenic adsorption from water using porous metal-organic frameworks

Arsenic in drinking water is a serious threat for human health due to its toxic nature and therefore, its eliminating is highly necessary. In this study, the ability of different novel and robust machine learning (ML) approaches, including Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM), Extreme Gradient Boosting, Gradient Boosting Decision Tree, and Random Forest was implemented to predict the adsorptive removal of arsenate [As(V)] from wastewater over 13 different metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). A large experimental dataset was collected under various conditions. The adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial arsenic concentration, adsorbent surface area, temperature, solution pH, and the presence of anions were considered as input variables, and adsorptive removal of As(V) was selected as the output of the models. The developed models were evaluated using various statistical criteria. The obtained results indicated that the LightGBM model provided the most accurate and reliable response to predict As(V) adsorption by MOFs and possesses R², RMSE, STD, and AAPRE (%) of 0.9958, 2.0688, 0.0628, and 2.88, respectively. The expected trends of As(V) removal with increasing initial concentration, solution pH, temperature, and coexistence of anions were predicted reasonably by the LightGBM model. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the adsorption process adversely relates to the initial As(V) concentration and directly depends on the MOFs surface area and dosage. This study proves that ML approaches are capable to manage complicated problems with large datasets and can be affordable alternatives for expensive and time-consuming experimental wastewater treatment processes.

Metal-Organic Framework Aerogel for Full pH Range Operation and Trace Adsorption of Arsenic in Water

The UiO-66-NH₂ aerogel has been designed to remove As(III) and As(V) in the full pH range with a long lifetime. The efficiency of the aerogel for trace removal from river water samples at the sub-ppb level has been demonstrated. The feasibility for practical uses has been evaluated by breakthrough experiments operated at a liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) of 38 h^-1 using a real water sample with a significant capacity of 284 mg g^-1. The UiO-66-NH₂ aerogel provides a lifetime of over 600 min, which is one of the highest lifetimes among the reported adsorbents for arsenic decontamination.

Tuning the structure of cerium-based metal-organic frameworks for efficient removal of arsenic species: The role of organic ligands

The ability of organic ligands to change the structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in nature and influence their adsorption efficiency for arsenic species is enormous. The current work was designed to investigate the adsorption performance of cerium-based MOFs with tunable structures through the use of organic ligands (Ce-MOF-66 and Ce-MOF-808) towards arsenic species from water. The structural features of Ce-MOF-66 and Ce-MOF-808 with varying crystallinity, morphology, particle size, and surface area are considerably altered by organic ligands tuning, resulting in clearly distinct arsenate (As (V)) and arsenite (As (III)) adsorption capabilities. The experimental results showed that the Langmuir adsorption capacities of As (V) by Ce-MOF-66 and Ce-MOF-808 reached 355.67 and 217.80 mg/g, respectively, while for As (III) were 5.52 and 402.10 mg/g for Ce-MOF-66 and Ce-MOF-808, respectively. Except for the impact of PO₄^3- on As (V), co-existing ions had no significant influence on adsorption, illustrating the high selectivity. Furthermore, to understand the structure and adsorption mechanism, two adsorbents were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, specific surface area, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in which identified that unsaturated sites and ligand exchange were the main adsorption mechanisms of As (V) and As (III). Overall, this research presents a novel approach for developing high-performance Ce-derived MOFs adsorbents to capture arsenic species.

UiO-66-NH2 based fluorescent sensing for detection of tetracyclines in milk

In this work, a fluorescent sensor based on a zirconium-based metal organic framework was prepared for the detection of tetracyclines (TCs) in milk. The UiO-66-NH2 fluorescent sensor was synthesized by a simple microwave-assisted method with 2-aminoterephthalic acid and zirconium chloride as precursors. In the presence of target TCs, the synergistic effect of the inner filter effect (IFE) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET) was responsible for the fluorescence quenching of UiO-66-NH2, and the fluorescence sensor showed a rapid fluorescence quenching response (5 min) to target TCs. The proposed UiO-66-NH2 sensor had good sensitivity and selectivity, and under the optimal conditions possessed detection limits of 0.449, 0.431, and 0.163 μM for tetracycline (TET), oxytetracycline (OTC), and doxycycline (DOX), respectively. Besides, the UiO-66-NH2 sensor was successfully applied to the quantitative detection of TCs in milk samples with reasonable recoveries of 93.26-115.17%, and the detection results achieved from the as-fabricated fluorescence sensing assay were consistent with those of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), indicating the potential applicability of the UiO-66-NH2 sensor for detecting TCs in actual food samples.

Facile fabrication of amino-functionalized MIL-68(Al) metal-organic framework for effective adsorption of arsenate (As(V))

An amino-functionalized MIL-68(Al) metal–organic framework (amino-MIL-68(Al) MOF) was synthesized by solvothermal method and then characterized by FESEM, XRD, FTIR, EDX-mapping, and BET-BJH techniques. In order to predict arsenate (As(V)) removal, a robust quadratic model (R² > 0.99, F-value = 2389.17 and p value < 0.0001) was developed by the central composite design (CCD) method and then the genetic algorithm (GA) was utilized to optimize the system response and four independent variables. The results showed that As(V) adsorption on MOF was affected by solution pH, adsorbent dose, As(V) concentration and reaction time, respectively. Predicted and experimental As(V) removal efficiencies under optimal conditions were 99.45 and 99.87%, respectively. The fitting of experimental data showed that As(V) adsorption on MOF is well described by the nonlinear form of the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic. At optimum pH 3, the maximum As(V) adsorption capacity was 74.29 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies in the temperature range of 25 to 50 °C showed that As(V) adsorption is a spontaneous endothermic process. The reusability of MOF in ten adsorption/regeneration cycles was studied and the results showed high reusability of this adsorbent. The highest interventional effect in inhibiting As(V) adsorption was related to phosphate anion. The results of this study showed that amino-MIL-68(Al) can be used as an effective MOF with a high surface area (> 1000 m²/g) and high reusability for As(V)-contaminated water.

Highly effective removal of formaldehyde from aqueous solution using mesoporous ɛ-MnO2 crystals at room temperature

Without additional templating agent or surfactant, porous and sparse MnCO3 was synthesized hydrothermally from Mn2+ with a CO2-storage material (CO2SM). Through thermal decomposition of the as-synthesized MnCO3, ɛ-MnO2 crystals with good catalytic performance and stability in HCHO degradation were prepared. The optimum preparation conditions were determined by tuning the preparation conditions and carrying out response surface studies, and the resulting ɛ-MnO2 crystals could degrade 66.1% of a 10 ml 10 mg l−1 HCHO solution. After the HCHO degradation conditions were optimized, the thermodynamic data could be fitted with the Langmuir isotherm and quasi-secondary kinetic models at T = 25–50°C. The degradation mechanism of HCHO is discussed. This work provides a new strategy for the degradation of HCHO at room temperature.

Synthesis and Characterization of Green ZnO@polynaniline/Bentonite Tripartite Structure (G.Zn@PN/BE) as Adsorbent for As (V) Ions: Integration, Steric, and Energetic Properties

A green ZnO@polynaniline/bentonite composite (G.Zn@PN/BE) was synthesized as an enhanced adsorbent for As (V) ions. Its adsorption properties were assessed in comparison with the integrated components of bentonite (BE) and polyaniline/bentonite (PN/BE) composites. The G.Zn@PN/BE composite achieved an As (V) retention capacity (213 mg/g) higher than BE (72.7 mg/g) and PN/BE (119.8 mg/g). The enhanced capacity of G.Zn@PN/BE was studied using classic (Langmuir) and advanced equilibrium (monolayer model of one energy) models. Considering the steric properties, the structure of G.Zn@PN/BE demonstrated a higher density of active sites (Nm = 109.8 (20 °C), 108.9 (30 °C), and 67.8 mg/g (40 °C)) than BE and PN/BE. This declared the effect of the integration process in inducing the retention capacity by increasing the quantities of the active sites. The number of adsorbed As (V) ions per site (1.76 up to 2.13) signifies the retention of two or three ions per site by a multi-ionic mechanism. The adsorption energies (from -3.07 to -3.26 kJ/mol) suggested physical retention mechanisms (hydrogen bonding and dipole bonding forces). The adsorption energy, internal energy, and free enthalpy reflected the exothermic, feasible, and spontaneous nature of the retention process. The structure is of significant As (V) uptake capacity in the existence of competitive anions or metal ions.

Adsorption-Based Removal of Sb (III) from Wastewater by Graphene Oxide-Modified Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework Composites

The treatment of Sb (III) wastewater produced from mining activities is uniquely challenging and has therefore garnered increasing attention. Here, an amino-modified zirconium-based metal-organic framework material (UiO-66-NH2) and its composites were loaded onto graphene oxide (GO@UiO-66-NH2) via the hydrothermal method, after which these materials were used to adsorb Sb (III) in mine wastewater. The effects of adsorption time, pH, initial Sb (III) concentration, temperature, and adsorbent dosage on the removal performance of Sb (III) were then investigated. The adsorption processes of Sb (III) were examined via adsorption kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic analyses. XRD, SEM, and FTIR analyses demonstrated the presence of a porous structure and high levels of oxygen-containing functional groups on the UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 surfaces. During the Sb (III) adsorption process, the adsorption rates of UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 were very fast in the first 10 minutes, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved in 12 h, with the adsorption efficiencies of 91.76% and 93.79%, respectively. At a pH of 7.0, 25°C, an initial Sb (III) concentration of 100 mg/L, and an adsorbent dosage of 0.04 g/L, the maximum Sb (III) adsorption capacities of UiO-66-NH2 and GO@UiO-66-NH2 reached 39.23 mg/g and 61.07 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process was accurately described by the Langmuir model, meaning that the Sb (III) was adsorbed through single-layer uniform adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption process was highly consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, which was indicative of spontaneous and endothermic chemical adsorption. Additionally, the Sb (III) removal efficiency could be maintained approximately 70% after sorption-desorption recycling four times. Therefore, our study provides an economical and effective method for the removal of Sb (III) in wastewater treatment.

Comparative evaluation of Fe-, Zr-, and La-based metal-organic frameworks derived from recycled PET plastic bottles for arsenate removal

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived from recycled polyester (polyethylene terephthalate, PET) bottles were investigated in both batch and column studies for the removal of arsenate. As-synthesized Fe-MOF, Zr-MOF, and La-MOF were systematically analyzed by SEM, PXRD, FTIR, BET, and XPS techniques. The obtained MOFs showed high crystallinity with the specific surface areas of 128.3, 290.4, and 61.8 m²/g for Fe-MOF, Zr-MOF, and La-MOF, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model simulated arsenate adsorption on MOF materials well, which can be explained by electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, and ligand exchange mechanisms. The maximum adsorption capacities of arsenate onto Fe-MOF, Zr-MOF, and La-MOF were found to be 70.02, 85.72, and 114.28 mg/g at pH 7, respectively. The effect of pH and co-existing anions on the arsenate adsorption on MOF materials was also evaluated for practical applications. The MOF materials showed reduced adsorption capacity for arsenate by less than 10% up to four cycles of regeneration and did not induce any significant (p > 0.05) acute toxicity (<2.5% mortality) in Daphnia magna. In a flow-through system, Fe-MOF, Zr-MOF, and La-MOF were used to treat 176, 255, and 398 mL bed volumes of arsenate contaminated water, respectively, and consistently reduced the concentration of arsenate ions from 500 to 10 μg/L. This study clearly demonstrated that MOF materials derived from waste PET bottles are economically promising adsorbents for the successful elimination of arsenate species from aqueous environments.
