High performance, environmentally friendly and sustainable nanofiber membrane filter for removal of particulate matter 1.0

Enhanced Air Filtration Efficiency through Electrospun PVC/PVP/MWCNTs Nanofibers: Design, Optimization, and Performance Evaluation

This study presents a novel approach for creating an effective air filtration medium using electrospun nanofibers comprised of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), and impregnated with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The membrane production was optimized using an experimental design methodology, resulting in a hydrophobic membrane that exhibits excellent dispersion of MWCNTs. Scanning electron microscopy images illustrate the nanofibers' morphology, featuring an average diameter of approximately 240 nm, minimal bead formation, and optimal MWCNT dispersion. Air filtration tests conducted with NaCl nanoparticles (7-300 nm) demonstrated superior permeability (10-12 m2) and minimal pressure drop (approximately 780 Pa at a 5 LPM airflow rate) compared to other electrospun materials. Both MWCNT-impregnated samples and individual PVC/PVP nanofibers exhibited filtration efficiencies nearing 96%. These results underscore the potential of this developed material for air filtration, particularly in indoor environments, where MWCNTs effectively adsorb and maintain low levels of gaseous and particulate pollutants. This study emphasizes the design, optimization, and comprehensive performance evaluation of PVC/PVP/MWCNT nanofibers, showcasing significant advancements in filtration efficiency with high flux. The findings suggest promising applications for this composite material in advanced air purification systems.

A review of advanced helical fibers: formation mechanism, preparation, properties, and applications

As a unique structural form, helical structures have a wide range of application prospects. In the field of biology, helical structures are essential for the function of biological macromolecules such as proteins, so the study of helical structures can help to deeply understand life phenomena and develop new biotechnology. In materials science, helical structures can give rise to special physical and chemical properties, such as in the case of spiral nanotubes, helical fibers, etc., which are expected to be used in energy, environment, medical and other fields. The helical structure also has unique charm and application value in the fields of aesthetics and architecture. In addition, helical fibers have attracted a lot of attention because of their tendrils' vascular geometry and indispensable structural properties. In this paper, the development of helical fibers is briefly reviewed from the aspects of mechanism, synthesis process and application. Due to their good chemical and physical properties, helical fibers have a good application prospect in many fields. Potential problems and future opportunities for helical fibers are also presented for future studies.

Buoyancy-Assisted Fabrication of Liquid Diode: Janus Nanofibrous Membrane for Efficient Wastewater Treatment

The pressing need for effective methods to separate oil and water in oily wastewater has spurred the development of innovative solutions. This work presents the creation and evaluation of a Janus nanofibrous membrane, also known as the Liquid Diode, developed using electrospinning (e-spinning) and buoyancy-assisted hydrothermal techniques. The membrane features a unique structure: one side is composed of PVDF nanofibers embedded with a GO/TiO2 composite, exhibiting in-air superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties, while the reverse side consists of PVDF nanofibers with a ZnO nanorod array, demonstrating in-air superhydrophilic and underwater (UW) superoleophobic properties. This distinct asymmetric wettability enables the membrane to effectively separate both water-in-oil (w-in-o) and oil-in-water (o-in-w) emulsions, achieving an impressive liquid flux and separation efficiency (SEff). The in-air superhydrophobic side of the Janus nanofibrous membrane achieves a maximum oil flux (Fo) of 3506 ± 250 L m-2 h-1, while the in-air superhydrophilic side achieves a maximum water flux (Fw) of 1837 ± 150 L m-2 h-1, with SEff exceeding 98% for both sides. Furthermore, the Janus nanofibrous membrane maintained reliable mechanical stability after 10 cycles of sandpaper abrasion test and demonstrated excellent chemical stability when subjected to acidic, alkaline, cold water and hot water conditions for 24 h. These properties, combined with its ability in breaking down of organic contaminants (98% ± 2% in 210 min) and pharmaceutical contaminants (97% ± 2% in 210 min) under visible light, highlight its photocatalytic potential. Additionally, the membrane's antifouling and antibacterial properties suggest long-term and sustainable use in wastewater treatment applications. The synergistic combination of these superior properties positions the Janus nanofibrous membrane as a promising solution for addressing complex challenges in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Microfiber/Nanofiber/Attapulgite Multilayer Separator with a Pore-Size Gradient for High-Performance and Safe Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have an extremely diverse application nowadays as an environmentally friendly and renewable new energy storage technology. The porous structure of the separator, one essential component of LIBs, provides an ion transport channel for the migration of ions and directly affects the overall performance of the battery. In this work, we fabricated a composite separator (GOP-PH-ATP) via simply laminating an electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) nanofibrous membrane coated with attapulgite (ATP) nanoparticles onto a PP nonwoven microfibrous fabric, which exhibits a unique porous structure with a pore-size gradient along the thickness direction that ranges from tens of microns to hundreds of nanometers. As a result, besides the enhanced thermal stability given by the chosen materials, the GOP-PH-ATP separator was endowed with a superhigh porosity of ~95%, strong affinity with electrolyte, and great electrolyte uptake of ~760%, thus effectively enabling an ionic conductivity of 2.38 mS cm-1 and a lithium-ion transference number of 0.62. Furthermore, the cell with the GOP-PH-ATP separator shows an excellent cycling performance with a capacity retention of 91.2% after 150 cycles at 1 C, suggesting that the composite separator with a pore-size gradient structure has great potential to be applied in LIBs.

Silica-Based Superhydrophobic and Superoleophilic Cotton Fabric with Enhanced Self-Cleaning Properties for Oil-Water Separation and Methylene Blue Degradation

Superhydrophobic textiles with multifunctional characteristics are highly desired and have attracted tremendous research attention. This research employs a simple dip-coating method to obtain a fluorine-free silica-based superhydrophobic and superoleophilic cotton fabric. Pristine cotton fabric is coated with SiO2 nanoparticles and octadecylamine. SiO2 nanoparticles are anchored on the cotton fabric to increase surface roughness, and octadecyl amine lowers the surface energy, turning the hydrophilic cotton fabric into superhydrophobic. The designed cotton fabric exhibits a water contact angle of 159° and a sliding angle of 7°. The prepared cotton fabric is characterized by attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In addition, the coated fabric reveals excellent features, including mechanical and chemical stability, superhydrophobicity, superoleophilicity, and the self-cleaning ability. SiO2 nanoparticles and octadecylamine-coated cotton fabric demonstrate exceptional oil-water separation and wastewater remediation performance by degrading the methylene blue solution up to 89% under visible light. The oil-water separation ability is tested against five different oils with more than 90% separation efficiency. This strategy has the advantages of low-cost precursors, a simple and scalable coating method, enhanced superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, self-cleaning ability, efficient oil-water separation, and exceptional wastewater remediation performance.

Preparation of Alumina Membrane Filters with Framework Structures by Al Anodization

Alumina membrane filters consisting of a thin filter layer (200-700 nm in thickness) supported by a framework (30-100 μm in thickness) were fabricated on the basis of the anodization of an Al substrate. The solution permeability of alumina membrane filters with tubular pores of uniform size and shape varies with membrane thickness; therefore, membrane filters with a filter layer thickness of less than 1 μm showed high solution permeability. Although the filter layer is thin, it is reinforced by a thick framework, enabling the fabrication of large freestanding membrane filters (2.5 × 2 cm2 in size). The pore size of the anodic porous alumina formed by the anodization of Al can be controlled in the range from 10 nm to ca. 2 μm by varying the preparation conditions. The alumina membrane obtained by this method is therefore useful as a membrane filter that can efficiently separate particles of various sizes, including microplastics, viruses, and bacteria. This method enables the fabrication of membrane filters with uniform pore size, high solution permeability, and sufficient mechanical strength for handling as freestanding membranes, which have been difficult to achieve with the reported preparation processes for membrane filters. The obtained membrane filters with frameworks can be applied to efficient microfiltration.

Bio-based ionic liquid filter with enhanced electrostatic attraction for outside filtration and inside collection of viral aerosols

Hazardous biological pathogens in the air pose a significant public environmental health concern as infected individuals emit virus-laden aerosols (VLAs) during routine respiratory activities. Mask-wearing is a key preventive measure, but conventional filtration methods face challenges, particularly in high humidity conditions, where electrostatic charge decline increases the risk of infection. This study introduces a bio-based air filter comprising glycine ionic liquids (GILs) and malleable polymer composite (GILP) with high polarity and functional group density, which are wrapped around a melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin skeleton, forming a conductive, porous GIL functionized ionic network air filter (GILP@MF). When subjected to low voltage, the GILP@MF composite efficiently captures VLAs including nanoscale virus particles through the enhanced electrostatic attraction, especially in facing high humidity bioaerosols exhaled by human body. The filtration/collection efficiency and quality factor can reach 98.3% and 0.264 Pa-1 at 0.1 m s-1, respectively. This innovative filter provides effective VLA protection and offers potential for non-invasive respiratory virus sampling, advancing medical diagnosis efforts.

Yolk-shell composite optical sensors with chiral L-histidine/Rhodamine 6G for high-sensitivity "turn-on" detection of L-proline

Chirality is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and has attracted wide attention in the biomedicine, pharmaceutics and biosensing research fields. Enantiomeric recognition of chiral compounds, especially chiral drugs and chiral amino acids, is important for human health and nutrition. In this work, through the encapsulation of L-His&R6G (L-His = L-Histidine; R6G = Rhodamine 6G) into MOF@MOF framework ZIF-67@ZIF-8, composited material L-His&R6G@ZIF-67@ZIF-8 can be obtained. Additionally, through the etching process, a unique yolk-shell ZIF-8 chiral composite optical sensors L-His&R6G@ZIF-8 (1) can be successfully prepared. Photo-luminescent (PL) experiment also reveals that 1 can highly sensitively detect L-Proline (L-Pro) through the "turn-on" detection strategy (KBH = 1.22 × 104 M-1 and detection limit 1.9 μM). Further yolk-shell L-His&R6G@ZIF-8-based fabricate flexible mixed-matrix membranes has been prepared using doctor-blading technique, which show significant fluorescence enhancement effect under ultraviolet lamp. This work also provides the unique example of preparing chiral yolk-shell framework composite sensors, which have broad application in chiral sensing area.

Nano-Micro Core-Shell Fibers for Efficient Pest Trapping

Insect sex pheromones as an alternative to chemical pesticides hold promising prospects in pest control. However, their burst release and duration need to be optimized. Herein, pheromone-loaded core-shell fibers composed of degradable polycaprolactone and polyhydroxybutyrate were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. The results showed that this core-shell fiber had good hydrophobic performance and thermal stability, and the light transmittance in the ultraviolet band was only below 40%, which provided protection to pheromones. The core-shell structure alleviated the burst release of pheromone in the fiber and extended the release time to about 133 days. In the field, the pheromone-loaded core-shell fibers showed the same continuous and efficient trapping of Spodoptera litura as the commercial carriers. More importantly, the electrospun fibers combined with biomaterials had a degradability unmatched by commercial carriers. The structure design strategy provides ideas for the innovative design of pheromone carriers and is a potential tool for the management of agricultural pests.

Cross-linking electrospinning

Although electrospinning (e-spinning) has witnessed rapid development in recent years, it has also been criticized by environmentalists due to the use of organic solvents. Therefore, aqueous e-spinning (green e-spinning) is considered a more attractive technique. However, considering the poor water resistance and mechanical properties of electrospun (e-spun) nanofibers, cross-linking is a perfect solution. In this review, we systematically discuss the cross-linking e-spinning system for the first time, including cross-linking strategies (in situ, liquid immersion, vapor, and spray cross-linking), cross-linking mechanism (physical and chemical cross-linking) of e-spun nanofibers, and the various applications (e.g., tissue engineering, drug delivery, water treatment, food packaging, and sensors) of cross-linked e-spun nanofibers. Among them, we highlight several cross-linking methods, including UV light cross-linking, electron beam cross-linking, glutaraldehyde (and other commonly used cross-linking agents) chemical cross-linking, thermal cross-linking, and enzymatic cross-linking. Finally, we confirm the significance of cross-linking e-spinning and reveal the problems in the construction of this system.

Incorporating charged Ag@MOFs to boost the antibacterial and filtration properties of porous electrospinning polylactide films

Faced with the pollution caused by particulate matter (PM) in the air, the prevalence of infectious diseases, and the environmental burden by use of nondegradable polymers, the existing filter materials such as meltblown cloth of polypropylene cannot satisfactorily meet people's requirements. In this study, Ag nanoparticles were loaded onto ZIF-8 particles by impregnation reduction to prepare the positively charged Ag@ZIF-8. The porous fibrous membranes of Ag@ZIF-8 with polylactide (PLA) were manufactured by electrostatic spinning technology. Due to the inherently charged feature of Ag@ZIF-8 particles and the presence of pores on fibers, the prepared membranes showed a stable good filtration efficiency of over 97 % at different humidity (30-90%RH, relative humidity). Meanwhile, the presence of charge on Ag@ZIF-8 and the synergistic effects of Ag and ZIF-8 particles made the membranes exhibit good antibacterial effects. The width of the inhibition zone of 3 wt%Ag@ZIF-8/PLA membrane reached 1.33 mm for E. coli and 1.35 mm for S. aureus, respectively.

Cellulose-Based Intelligent Responsive Materials: A Review

Due to the rapid development of intelligent technology and the pursuit of green environmental protection, responsive materials with single response and actuation can no longer meet the requirements of modern technology for intelligence, diversification, and environmental friendliness. Therefore, intelligent responsive materials have received much attention. In recent years, with the development of new materials and technologies, cellulose materials have become increasingly used as responsive materials due to their advantages of sustainability and renewability. This review summarizes the relevant research on cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials in recent years. According to the stimuli responses, they are divided into temperature-, light-, electrical-, magnetic-, and humidity-responsive types. The response mechanism, application status, and development trend of cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials are summarized. Finally, the future perspectives on the preparation and applications of cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials are presented for future research directions.

Nanostructured Bioaerogels as a Potential Solution for Particulate Matter Pollution

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is a significant environmental and public health issue globally. Exposure to high levels of PM, especially fine particles, can have severe health consequences. These particles can come from a variety of sources, including natural events like dust storms and wildfires, as well as human activities such as industrial processes and transportation. Although an extensive development in air filtration techniques has been made in the past few years, fine particulate matter still poses a serios and dangerous threat to human health and to our environment. Conventional air filters are fabricated from non-biodegradable and non-ecofriendly materials which can cause further environmental pollution as a result of their excessive use. Nanostructured biopolymer aerogels have shown great promise in the field of particulate matter removal. Their unique properties, renewable nature, and potential for customization make them attractive materials for air pollution control. In the present review, we discuss the meaning, properties, and advantages of nanostructured aerogels and their potential in particulate matter removal. Particulate matter pollution, types and sources of particulate matter, health effect, environmental effect, and the challenges facing scientists in particulate matter removal are also discussed in the present review. Finally, we present the most recent advances in using nanostructured bioaerogels in the removal of different types of particulate matter and discuss the challenges that we face in these applications.

Efficient adsorptive removal of aminoglycoside antibiotics from environmental water

Aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs) in environmental water are emerging pollutants that must be removed to protect human health and the ecosystem. However, removing AGs from environmental water remains a technical challenge due to high polarity, stronger hydrophilicity and unique characteristics of polycation. Herein, a thermal-crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol electrospun nanofiber membrane (T-PVA NFsM) is synthesized and firstly leveraged as the adsorptive removal of AGs from environmental water. The thermal crosslinking strategy is demonstrated to enhance both the water resistance and hydrophilicity of T-PVA NFsM, thereby effectively interacting with AGs with high stability. Experimental characterizations and analog calculations indicate that T-PVA NFsM utilizes multiple adsorption mechanisms, including electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions with AGs. As a result, the material achieves 91.09%-100% adsorption efficiencies and a maximum adsorption capacity of 110.35 mg g^-1 in less than 30 min. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order model. After eight consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, T-PVA NFsM with a simplified recycling process maintains a sustainable adsorption capability. Compared with other forms of adsorption materials, T-PVA NFsM has significant advantages such as less consumption of adsorbent, high adsorption efficiency and fast removal speed. Therefore, T-PVA NFsM-based adsorptive removal holds promise for eliminating AGs from environmental water.

Electrospun nanofibers for medical face mask with protection capabilities against viruses: State of the art and perspective for industrial scale-up

Face masks have proven to be a useful protection from airborne viruses and bacteria, especially in the recent years pandemic outbreak when they effectively lowered the risk of infection from Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) or Omicron variants, being recognized as one of the main protective measures adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO). The need for improving the filtering efficiency performance to prevent penetration of fine particulate matter (PM), which can be potential bacteria or virus carriers, has led the research into developing new methods and techniques for face mask fabrication. In this perspective, Electrospinning has shown to be the most efficient technique to get either synthetic or natural polymers-based fibers with size down to the nanoscale providing remarkable performance in terms of both particle filtration and breathability. The aim of this Review is to give further insight into the implementation of electrospun nanofibers for the realization of the next generation of face masks, with functionalized membranes via addiction of active material to the polymer solutions that can give optimal features about antibacterial, antiviral, self-sterilization, and electrical energy storage capabilities. Furthermore, the recent advances regarding the use of renewable materials and green solvent strategies to improve the sustainability of electrospun membranes and to fabricate eco-friendly filters are here discussed, especially in view of the large-scale nanofiber production where traditional membrane manufacturing may result in a high environmental and health risk.

Tannic-Acid-Enriched Poly(vinyl alcohol) Nanofibrous Membrane as a UV-Shie lding and Antibacterial Face Mask Filter Material

Face masks are increasingly important in the battle against infectious diseases and air pollution. Nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) are promising filter layers for removing particulate matter (PM) without restricting air permeability. In this study, tannic-acid-enriched poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA-TA) NFMs were fabricated by electrospinning PVA solutions containing large amounts of tannic acid (TA), a multifunctional polyphenol compound. We were able to prepare uniform electrospinning solution without coacervate formation by inhibiting the robust hydrogen bonding between PVA and TA. Notably, the NFM maintained its fibrous structure even under moist conditions after heat treatment without the use of a cross-linking agent. Further, the mechanical strength and thermal stability of the PVA NFM were improved by the introduction of TA. The functional PVA NFM with a high TA content showed excellent UV-shielding (UV-A: 95.7%, UV-B: 100%) and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (inhibition zone: 8.7 ± 1.2 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (inhibition zone: 13.7 ± 0.6 mm). Moreover, the particle filtration efficiency of the PVA-TA NFM for PM_0.6 particles was 97.7% at 32 L min^-1 and 99.5% at 85 L min^-1, indicating excellent filtration performance and a low pressure drop. Therefore, the TA-enriched PVA NFM is a promising mask filter layer material with excellent UV-blocking and antibacterial properties and has the potential for various practical applications.

Microscale and Macroscale Deformation Behavior of Electrospun Polymeric Nanofiber Membranes Using In Situ SEM during Mechanical Testing

Electrospun nanofiber membranes show high potential in various application fields (e.g., filtration, catalysis, and sensing). Nevertheless, knowledge of the mechanical behavior, and more specifically, the deformation of nanofiber membranes is still limited today which can complicate the appliance of nanofiber membranes in applications where they are mechanically loaded. In this paper, we, therefore, analyzed the mechanical behavior of polymeric nanofiber membranes with different fiber orientations (random and aligned) extensively. Polyamide 6 was used as a representative reference polymer for proof-of-concept. Mechanical tests show that all membranes have a coherent deformation behavior at the macroscale up to the point of fracture. Large variations in stiffness, ultimate strength, and ultimate strain were observed between membranes with different fiber orientations (Random: E-mod: 370 ± 34 MP; UTS: 38.5 ± 6.0 MPa; εmax: 30.0 ± 2.8%; Parallel aligned: E-mod: 753 ± 11 MPa; UTS: 55.4 ± 0.8 MPa; εmax: 12.0 ± 0.1%; Perpendicular aligned: E-mod: 24.1 ± 3.7 MPa; UTS:/; εmax: >40%). This shows the versatility and tunability of the mechanical behavior of these nanofiber membranes. At the microscale, the fibrous structure results in deformation mechanisms that resist failure formation and progression when the membrane is mechanically loaded. This results in a high fracture resistance, even for pre-damaged membranes. Realignment of the fibers along the loading direction causes crack tip blunting, locally reinforcing the membrane.

A susceptible coordination hybrid based terbium sensibilization coupled ESIPT effects for pattern discrimination of analogues

Multianalyte detection and analogue discrimination are extremely valuable frontier areas for their wide applications in environmental, medical, clinical and industrial analyses. Nowadays, researchers rack their brains on how to develop excellent multianalyte chemosensors that have presented huge challenges in designing high-efficient fluorescent sensing materials and constructing high-throughput detection methods. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to utilize the dual-emission fluorescent detection platform as a lab-on-a-molecule, arising from the disalicylaldehyde-coordinated hybrid H₂Q_j3/Tb based terbium sensibilization coupled excited-state intramolecular proton transfer effects. Using the statistical analysis (PCA and HCA) for sensing signals of three fluorescence channels (431, 543 and 583 nm), we demonstrate this elaborate chemosensor with multianalyte detection of three species (solvents, anions and cations) and pattern discrimination of analogues. As a result, the H₂Q_j3/Tb shows great lab-on-a-molecule characters for each set of species, resulting in the easier identification of many critical analytes (e.g., H₂O, NO₂^- and Fe³⁺) and discrimination of analogues. In addition, it is also proven to be able to provide reliable content determination for an analyte, especially the NO₂^- (LOD = 0.37 μM), and discrimination for mixed analogues. A combination of easy-to-implement preparation procedure and data analysis technique makes this work promising for not only designing similar lanthanide-based materials but also realizing more high-efficient multianalyte sensing systems towards various potential applications.

Development of cell adhesive and inherently antibacterial polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene oxide nanofiber scaffolds via incorporating chitosan for tissue engineering

Currently, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene oxide (PEO), as tissue engineering scaffolds materials, had been widely studied, however the hard issues in cell adhesive and antimicrobial properties still seriously limited their application in biomedical respects. Herein, we solved both hard issues by incorporating chitosan (CHI) into the PVA/PEO system, and successfully prepared PVA/PEO/CHI nanofiber scaffolds via electrospinning technology. First, the hierarchical pore structure and elevated porosity stacked by nanofiber of the nanofiber scaffolds supplied suitable space for cell growth. Significantly, the PVA/PEO/CHI nanofiber scaffolds (the cytotoxicity of grade 0) effectively improved cell adhesion by regulating the CHI content, and presented positively correlated with the CHI content. Besides, the excellent surface wettability of PVA/PEO/CHI nanofiber scaffolds exhibited maximum absorbability at a CHI content of 15 wt%. Based on the FTIR, XRD, and mechanical test results, we studied the semi-quantitative effect of hydrogen content on the aggregated state structure and mechanical properties of the PVA/PEO/CHI nanofiber scaffolds. The breaking stress of the nanofiber scaffolds increased with increasing CHI content, and the maximum value reached 15.37 MPa, increased by 67.61 %. Therefore, such dual biofunctional nanofiber scaffolds with improved mechanical properties showed great potential application in tissue engineering scaffolds.

Highly Efficient, Dual-Functional Self-Assembled Electrospun Nanofiber Filters for Simultaneous PM Removal and On-Site Eye-Readable Formaldehyde Sensing

Air pollution containing particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds has caused magnificent burdens on individual health and global economy. Although advances in highly efficient or multifunctional nanofiber filters have been achieved, many existing filters can only deal with one type of air pollutant, such as capturing PM or absorbing and detecting toxic gas. Here, highly efficient, dual-functional, self-assembled electrospun nanofiber (SAEN) filters were developed for simultaneous PM removal and onsite eye-readable formaldehyde sensing fabricated on a commercial fabric mask. With the use of an electrolyte solution containing a formaldehyde-sensitive colorimetric agent as a collector during electrospinning, the one-step fabrication of the dual-functional SAEN filter on commercial masks, such as a fabric mask and a daily disposable mask, was achieved. The electrolyte solution also allowed the uniform deposition of electrospun nanofibers, thereby achieving the high efficiency of PM filtration with an increased quality factor up to twice that of commercial masks. The SAEN filter enabled onsite and eye-readable formaldehyde gas detection by changing its color from yellow to red under a 5 ppm concentrated formaldehyde gas atmosphere. The repetitive fabrication and detachment of the SAEN filter on a fabric mask minimized the waste of the mask while maintaining high filtration efficiency by replenishing the SAEN filters and reusing the fabric mask. Given the dual functionality of SAEN filters, this process could provide new insights into designing and developing high performance and dual-functional electrospun nanofiber filters for various applications, including individual protection and indoor purification applications.

Nude and Modified Electrospun Nanofibers, Application to Air Purification

Air transports several pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), which can produce cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Thus, it is a challenge to control pollutant emissions before releasing them to the environment. Until now, filtration has been the most efficient processes for removing PM. Therefore, the electrospinning procedure has been applied to obtain membranes with a high filtration efficiency and low pressure drop. This review addressed the synthesis of polymers that are used for fabricating high-performance membranes by electrospinning to remove air pollutants. Then, the most influential parameters to produce electrospun membranes are indicated. The main results show that electrospun membranes are an excellent alternative to having air filters due to the versatility of the process, the capacity for controlling the fiber diameter, porosity, high filtration efficiency and low-pressure drop.

Electrospun Filtering Membrane Designed as Component of Self-Decontaminating Protective Masks

The 2019 coronavirus outbreak and worsening air pollution have triggered the search for manufacturing effective protective masks preventing both particulate matter and biohazard absorption through the respiratory tract. Therefore, the design of advanced filtering textiles combining efficient physical barrier properties with antimicrobial properties is more newsworthy than ever. The objective of this work was to produce a filtering electrospun membrane incorporating a biocidal agent that would offer both optimal filtration efficiency and fast deactivation of entrapped viruses and bacteria. After the eco-friendly electrospinning process, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers were stabilized by crosslinking with 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). To compensate their low mechanical properties, nanofiber membranes with variable grammages were directly electrospun on a meltblown polypropylene (PP) support of 30 g/m². The results demonstrated that nanofibers supported on PP with a grammage of around only 2 g/m² presented the best compromise between filtration efficiencies of PM_0.3, PM_0.5, and PM_3.0 and the pressure drop. The filtering electrospun membranes loaded with benzalkonium chloride (ADBAC) as a biocidal agent were successfully tested against E. coli and S. aureus and against human coronavirus strain HCoV-229E. This new biocidal filter based on electrospun nanofibers supported on PP nonwoven fabric could be a promising solution for personal and collective protection in a pandemic context.

Application of Electrospun Water-Soluble Synthetic Polymers for Multifunctional Air Filters and Face Masks

The worsening of air quality is an urgent human health issue of modern society. The outbreak of COVID-19 has made the improvement of air quality even more imperative, both for the general achievement of major health gains and to reduce the critical factors in the transmission of airborne diseases. Thus, the development of solutions for the filtration of airborne pollutants is pivotal. Electrospinning has gained wide attention as an effective fabrication technique for preparing ultrafine fibers which are specifically tailored for air filtration. Nevertheless, the utilization of harmful organic solvents is the major barrier for the large-scale applicability of electrospinning. The use of water-soluble synthetic polymers has attracted increasing attention as a 'green' solution in electrospinning. We reported an overview of the last five years of the scientific literature on the use of water-soluble synthetic polymers for the fabrication of multifunctional air filters layers. Most of recent studies have focused on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Various modifications of electrospun polymers have been also described. The use of water-soluble synthetic polymers can contribute to the scalability of electrospinning and pave the way to innovative applications. Further studies will be required to fully harness the potentiality of these 'greener' electrospinning processes.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibrous membranes via green electrospinning and tannin coating for selective removal of Pb(II) ion

The conventional adsorbent fabrication methods involve complicated processes and may cause secondary contaminations. Therefore, an effective eco-friendly method is required for the fabrication of heavy metal adsorbents using inexpensive and eco-friendly materials without secondary pollution during their process. In this study, nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) were fabricated via green electrospinning of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), a hydrophilic polymer, and their water resistance was improved through simple heat treatment without using additional additives. Then, nanofibrous heavy metal adsorbents were prepared by dip-coating the NFMs in an aqueous solution of tannic acid (TA), a natural polyphenol. First, the adsorption/desorption behavior of TA on PVA NFMs during the TA coating process was investigated. In addition, the effects of TA coating on the mechanical properties and heavy metal adsorption characteristics of the PVA NFMs were analyzed. The TA coating significantly increased the mechanical strength, heat resistance, and heavy metal (Pb(II)) adsorption capacity of the PVA NFM. The Pb²⁺ adsorption amount of TA-coated PVA NFMs exhibited about 5-7 times higher than those of other heavy metal ions, indicating excellent selectivity for Pb²⁺. In addition, the TA-coated PVA NFMs retained >70% of its initial adsorption capacity even after four cycles of adsorption/desorption, indicating its reusability.

Chiral Luminescent Sensor Eu-BTB@d-Carnitine Applied in the Highly Effective Ratiometric Sensing of Curing Drugs and Biomarkers for Diabetes and Hypertension

Chiral drugs are of great significance in drug development and life science because one pair of enantiomers has a different combination mode with target biological active sites, leading to a vast difference in physical activity. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based chiral hybrid materials with specific chiral sites have excellent applications in the highly effective sensing of drug enantiomers. Sitagliptin and clonidine are effective curing drugs for controlling diabetes and hypertension, while insulin and norepinephrine are the biomarkers of these two diseases. Excessive use of sitagliptin and clonidine can cause side effects such as stomach pain, nausea, and headaches. Herein, through post-synthetic strategy, MOF-based chiral hybrid material Eu-BTB@d-carnitine (H₃BTB = 1,3,5-benzenetrisbenzoic acid) was synthesized. Eu-BTB@d-carnitine has dual emission peaks at 417 and 616 nm when excited at 330 nm. Eu-BTB@d-carnitine can be applied in luminescent recognition toward sitagliptin and clonidine with high sensitivity and low detection limit (for sitagliptin detection, K_sv is 7.43 × 10⁶ [M^-1]; for clonidine detection, K_sv is 9.09 × 10⁶ [M^-1]; limit of detection (LOD) for sitagliptin is 10.21 nM, and LOD of clonidine is 8.34 nM). In addition, Eu-BTB@d-carnitine can further realize highly sensitive detection of insulin in human fluids with a high K_sv (2.08 × 10⁶ [M^-1]) and a low LOD (15.48 nM). On the other hand, norepinephrine also can be successfully discriminated by the hybrid luminescent platform of Eu-BTB@d-carnitine and clonidine with a high K_sv value of 4.79 × 10⁶ [M^-1] and a low LOD of 8.37 nM. As a result, the chiral hybrid material Eu-BTB@d-carnitine can be successfully applied in the highly effective ratiometric sensing of curing drugs and biomarkers for diabetes and hypertension.

Removal of lead from aqueous solution using electrospun nanofibers: preparation, characterization, adsorption isotherm, and kinetic study

Lead is one of the most hazardous toxic heavy metal ions in industrial wastewater. The removal of Pb(II) from aqueous environment is an extremely essential topic due to acquiring clean water resources and its significant impact on human health. Adsorption is an effective and the most widely used method for heavy metal removal from an aqueous medium. Nanofibers have potential advantages in the adsorption of heavy metal ions from wastewater. In this study, nanofibers based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were fabricated for the removal of lead ions from aqueous samples. Nanofibers produced by electrospinning were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) techniques. A batch system was used for the adsorption of Pb(II) ions onto cross-linked PVA (%10) and PVA (%10):MSs (%2) (Malva Sylestris L. seed biomaterial) nanofibers. The effectiveness of cross-linking was determined by the water absorbency test. The pH, adsorbent amount, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic values were thoroughly investigated in the adsorption tests. Pb(II) adsorption on the polymer was confirmed by EDX analysis. The optimum values found were a pH of 6, an adsorbent dose of 5.0 mg, and a contact time of 120 min. Lead ion concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The Freundlich models could explain the results from the adsorption data. Similar results were obtained from adsorption isotherm models, and the results were found to support each other. The adsorption capacity for PVA (10%) and PVA (10%):MSs (2%) nanofibers were found to be 444.2 mg g^-1 and 588.2 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption capacity increases with the addition of MSs (2%) biomaterial. As a result, nanofibers can be used as effective adsorbents in the removal of Pb(II) ions. The developed methods are environmentally friendly and promising for the separation of toxic Pb(II) ions from aqueous systems, which is a major problem for environmental pollution.

Electrospun-Based Membranes as a Key Tool to Prevent Respiratory Infections

The use of electrospun meshes has been proposed as highly efficient protective equipment to prevent respiratory infections. Those infections can result from the activity of micro-organisms and other small dust particles, such as those resulting from air pollution, that impair the respiratory tract, induce cellular damage and compromise breathing capacity. Therefore, electrospun meshes can contribute to promoting air-breathing quality and controlling the spread of such epidemic-disrupting agents due to their intrinsic characteristics, namely, low pore size, and high porosity and surface area. In this review, the mechanisms behind the pathogenesis of several stressors of the respiratory system are covered as well as the strategies adopted to inhibit their action. The main goal is to discuss the performance of antimicrobial electrospun nanofibers by comparing the results already reported in the literature. Further, the main aspects of the certification of filtering systems are highlighted, and the expected technology developments in the industry are also discussed.

Nanomaterial based PVA nanocomposite hydrogels for biomedical sensing: Advances toward designing the ideal flexible/wearable nanoprobes

In today's world, the progress of wearable tools has gained increasing momentum. Notably, the demand for stretchable strain sensors has considerably increased owing to various potential and emerging applications like human motion monitoring, soft robotics, prosthetics, and electronic skin. Hydrogels possess excellent biocompatibility, flexibility, and stretchability that render them ideal candidates for flexible/wearable substrates. Among them, enormous efforts were focused on the progress of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels to realize multifunctional wearable sensing through using additives/nanofillers/functional groups to modify the hydrogel network. Herein, this review offers an up-to-date and comprehensive summary of the research progress of PVA hydrogel-based wearable sensors in view of their properties, strain sensory efficiency, and potential applications, followed by specifically highlighting their probes using metallic/non-metallic, liquid metal (LM), 2D materials, bio-nanomaterials, and polymer nanofillers. Indeed, flexible electrodes and strain/pressure sensing performance of designed PVA hydrogels for their effective sensing are described. The representative cases are carefully selected and discussed regarding the construction, merits and demerits, respectively. Finally, the necessity and requirements for future advances of conductive and stretchable hydrogels engaged in the wearable strain sensors are also presented, followed by opportunities and challenges.

Polyelectrolyte aerogels with regeneration capacity for efficient removal of particulate matters

HYPOTHESIS

With the rapid development of economy and global industrialization, the problem of air pollution has become a worldwide topic. The efficient filtration of airborne particulate matters (PMs) is critical for human health and environmental sustainability.

EXPERIMENTS

Herein, self-supporting bio-based polyelectrolyte aerogels were prepared and acted as the advanced filters for efficient removal of PMs. The natural choline cation (Ch⁺) or the organic cation, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (Bmim⁺), are introduced into alginate (Alg^-) to form the polyelectrolytes of ChAlg or BmimAlg due to the electrostatic interaction. By the directional freeze-drying in liquid N₂, hierarchically porous aerogels with mechanical robustness, flexibility and thermo-stability were prepared. This specific structure may permit the polluted air to pass adequately through the aerogel channels, which are conducive to intercept various PMs with different diameters.

FINDINGS

As an example, the removal efficiency of ChAlg aerogels for PM₁₀, PM_2.5 and PM_0.3 are respectively up to (99.24 ± 0.03)%, (99.22 ± 0.02)%, and (93.41 ± 0.22)% within 15 h durability test. One outstanding character lies in ensuring high removal efficiency, while achieving a good balance with the low pressure drop (10 Pa), which is driven by synergistic effect of passive trapping and electrostatic capture. Moreover, the polyelectrolyte aerogels exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity and regenerated capacity. These properties endow the aerogels of polyelectrolyte ChAlg or BmimAlg with remarkable potential as new advanced filters for masks and other personal protective equipment.

Virucidal N95 Respirator Face Masks via Ultrathin Surface-Grafted Quaternary Ammonium Polymer Coatings

N95 respirator face masks serve as effective physical barriers against airborne virus transmission, especially in a hospital setting. However, conventional filtration materials, such as nonwoven polypropylene fibers, have no inherent virucidal activity, and thus, the risk of surface contamination increases with wear time. The ability of face masks to protect against infection can be likely improved by incorporating components that deactivate viruses on contact. We present a facile method for covalently attaching antiviral quaternary ammonium polymers to the fiber surfaces of nonwoven polypropylene fabrics that are commonly used as filtration materials in N95 respirators via ultraviolet (UV)-initiated grafting of biocidal agents. Here, C₁₂-quaternized benzophenone is simultaneously polymerized and grafted onto melt-blown or spunbond polypropylene fabric using 254 nm UV light. This grafting method generated ultrathin polymer coatings which imparted a permanent cationic charge without grossly changing fiber morphology or air resistance across the filter. For melt-blown polypropylene, which comprises the active filtration layer of N95 respirator masks, filtration efficiency was negatively impacted from 72.5 to 51.3% for uncoated and coated single-ply samples, respectively. Similarly, directly applying the antiviral polymer to full N95 masks decreased the filtration efficiency from 90.4 to 79.8%. This effect was due to the exposure of melt-blown polypropylene to organic solvents used in the coating process. However, N95-level filtration efficiency could be achieved by wearing coated spunbond polypropylene over an N95 mask or by fabricating N95 masks with coated spunbond as the exterior layer. Coated materials demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against several lipid-enveloped viruses, as well as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. For example, a 4.3-log reduction in infectious MHV-A59 virus and a 3.3-log reduction in infectious SuHV-1 virus after contact with coated filters were observed, although the level of viral deactivation varied significantly depending on the virus strain and protocol for assaying infectivity.

Solvo-thermal synthesis of a unique cluster-based nano-porous zinc(II) luminescent metal-organic framework for highly sensitive detection of anthrax biomarker and dichromate

In this work a flexible multi-dentate 4,4'-(1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-yl) methylene-bis(benzonic acid) (H₂L) ligand has been employed, a unique cluster-based nano-porous luminescent zinc(II) metal-organic framework {[Zn(μ₆-L)]·(DMAC)₂}_n (1) (DMAC = Dimethylacetamide) has been isolated under solvo-thermal conditions. The H₂L ligand adopts hexa-dentate coordination modes via one triazole nitrogen atom and four aromatic carboxylate oxygen atoms, which bridge the neighboring six-coordinated Zn^II centers, leading to a three-dimensional (3D) nano-porous metal organic framework. A PLATON program analysis suggests the total potential solvent area volume is 2028.9 Å³, which occupy 62.5% percent of the unit cell volume (3248.4 Å³). PXRD Patterns of the as-synthesized samples 1 have been determined confirming the purity of the bulky samples. Photo-luminescent properties indicate strong fluorescent emissions of 1 at the room temperature. Further photo-luminescent measurements show that 1 can exhibit highly sensitive real-time luminescence sensing of anthrax biomarker dipicolinic acid (DPA) with high quenching efficiency (K_SV = 1.48 × 10⁵ M^-1) and low detection limit (0.298 μM (S/N = 3)). Meanwhile 1 also exhibits highly selective and sensitive luminescence sensing for Cr₂O₇^2- ions in aqueous solutions with high quenching efficiency K_SV = 1.22 × 10⁴ L·mol^-1 and low detection limit (0.023 μM (S/N = 3)). Therefore 1 can be used a unique multi-functional 3D cluster-based metal organic material in sensitive detection and effective detection of environment pollutants and biomarker molecules.

Tailoring moisture electroactive Ag/Zn@cotton coupled with electrospun PVDF/PS nanofibers for antimicrobial face masks

Face mask has become an essential and effective apparatus to protect human beings from air pollution, especially the air-borne pathogens. However, most commercial face masks can hardly achieve good particulate matters (PMs) and high bactericidal efficacy concurrently. Herein, a bilayer structured composite filter medium with built-in antimicrobial activities was constructed by combining cotton woven modified by magnetron sputtered Ag/Zn coatings and electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride)/polystyrene (PVDF/PS) nanofibers. With the benefit of external moisture, an electrical stimulation was generated inside the composite fabric and thus endowed the fabric antimicrobial function. The resultant composite fabric presented conspicuous performance for integrated air pollution control, high filtration performance towards PM_0.3 (99.1%, 79.2 Pa) and exceptional interception ratio against Escherichia coli (99.64%) and Staphylococcus aureus (98.75%) within 20 min contact. The high efficiency contact sterilization function of the bilayer fabric could further potentially promote disinfection and reuse of the filter media. This work may provide a new perspective on designing high-performance face mask media for public health protection.

Advances in particulate matter filtration: Materials, performance, and application

Air-borne pollutants in particulate matter (PM) form, produced either physically during industrial processes or certain biological routes, have posed a great threat to human health. Particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic, effective filtration of the virus is an urgent matter worldwide. In this review, we first introduce some fundamentals about PM, including its source and classification, filtration mechanisms, and evaluation parameters. Advanced filtration materials and their functions are then summarized, among which polymers and MOFs are discussed in detail together with their antibacterial performance. The discussion on the application is divided into end-of-pipe treatment and source control. Finally, we conclude this review with our prospective view on future research in this area.

Electrospun Nanofiber Membranes for Air Filtration: A Review

Nanomaterials for air filtration have been studied by researchers for decades. Owing to the advantages of high porosity, small pore size, and good connectivity, nanofiber membranes prepared by electrospinning technology have been considered as an outstanding air-filter candidate. To satisfy the requirements of material functionalization, electrospinning can provide a simple and efficient one-step process to fabricate the complex structures of functional nanofibers such as core-sheath structures, Janus structures, and other multilayered structures. Additionally, as a nanoparticle carrier, electrospun nanofibers can easily achieve antibacterial properties, flame-retardant properties, and the adsorption properties of volatile gases, etc. These simple and effective approaches have benefited from the significate development of electrospun nanofibers for air-filtration applications. In this review, the research progress on electrospun nanofibers as air filters in recent years is summarized. The fabrication methods, filtration performances, advantages, and disadvantages of single-polymer nanofibers, multipolymer composite nanofibers, and nanoparticle-doped hybrid nanofibers are investigated. Finally, the basic principles of air filtration are concluded upon and prospects for the application of complex-structured nanofibers in the field of air filtration are proposed.

Quaternized chitin/tannic acid bilayers layer-by-layer deposited poly(lactic acid)/polyurethane nanofibrous mats decorated with photoresponsive complex and silver nanoparticles for antibacterial activity

Chronic wounding treatment based on bacterially infected diabetes suffers an essential limitation in persistent skin injuries due to the resistance of progressive antibiotics, which inhibits the process of healing with wound tissue. Therefore, biologically friendly and nontoxic bio-based mats without antibiotics are taken for granted as a versatile platform for biomedical dressing, but urgently necessitates further functional diversification. Herein, a novel tannic acid (TA)/silver (Ag)-modified poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/Polyurethane (PU) antibacterial hybrid nanofibers were successfully constructed by electrospinning technology. Layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique was utilized to produce membranes via deposited biocompatible quaternized chitin (QC) and TA. The mats are enabled with outstanding flexibility, antibacterial activity, great hemocompatibility, and good ROS-scavenger in a wounding environment. Consequently, the basis of morphology and structure of electrospun membranes was verified by SEM and FT-IR. Besides, the LBL-structured surface was proved to impart improved wettability and hydrophilic via the test of water contact angle. Additionally, antimicrobial experiments demonstrate the effective broad-spectrum antibacterial ability of as-prepared hybrids, inhibiting infection of gram-positive microbial (S. aureus) as well as gram-negative microbial. Finally, the anti-oxidation performance holds great promise in conducive to the formation favorable physiological environment for wound healing. In conclusion, this work establishes a feasible but effective pathway to construct a multifunctional antibacterial dressing for the skin infection.

Preparation of Needleless Electrospinning Polyvinyl Alcohol/Water-Soluble Chitosan Nanofibrous Membranes: Antibacterial Property and Filter Efficiency

Electrospinning is an efficient method of producing nanofibers out of polymers that shows a great potential for the filtration territory. Featuring water-soluble chitosan (WS-CS), a low-pollution process and a self-made needleless machine, PVA/WS-CS nanofibrous membranes were prepared and evaluated for nanofiber diameter, bacteriostatic property, filtration efficiency, pressure drop, and quality factor. Test results indicate that the minimal fiber diameter was 216.58 ± 58.15 nm. Regardless of the WS-CS concentration, all of the PVA/WS-CS nanofibrous membranes attained a high porosity and a high water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), with a pore size of 12.06–22.48 nm. Moreover, the membranes also exhibit bacteriostatic efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, an optimal quality factor of 0.0825 Pa⁻¹, and a filtration efficiency as high as 97.0%, that is 72.5% higher than that of common masks.

Exfoliated graphite blocks with resilience prepared by room temperature exfoliation and their application for oil-water separation

Exfoliated graphite (EG) blocks are prepared from the ultra-large flakes of graphite by intercalation of H₂SO₄ using a large amount of H₂O₂ at 5 °C and following exfoliation at 30 °C. By the exfoliation in a closed container, EG blocks with the bulk densities of 0.008-0.024 g/cm³ are successfully prepared. The resultant EG blocks have high sorption capacities for a diesel oil, up to 45 g/g. The EG blocks after oil sorption can get certain resilience for compressive stress with high reproducibility by compression-release cycles, which allows us to apply the compression-releasing for the oil sorption-desorption of the EG blocks. The performance of cyclic oil sorption-desorption by compression-releasing of EG block is compared with those of filtration and distillation. Since the resultant EG blocks had sufficient mechanical strength, the continuous removal of oil floating on the water surface is possible, exporting oil through a catheter inserted into the block and connected to a peristaltic pump. By warming up by Joule heating, even a crude oil having high viscosity can be continuously removed from the water with sufficient rate. The high hydrophobicity and lipophilicity of EG make selective removal of oil from water possible.

Application of Electrospun Nonwoven Fibers in Air Filters

Air filtration has seen a sizable increase in the global market this past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nanofiber nonwoven mats are able to reach certain efficiencies with a low-pressure drop, have a very high surface area to volume ratio, filter out submicron particulates, and can customize the fiber material to better suit its purpose. Although electrospinning nonwoven mats have been very well studied and documented there are not many papers that combine them. This review touches on the various ways to manufacture nonwoven mats for use as an air filter, with an emphasis on electrospinning, the mechanisms by which the fibrous nonwoven air filter stops particles passing through, and ways that the nonwoven mats can be altered by morphology, structure, and material parameters. Metallic, ceramic, and organic nanoparticle coatings, as well as electrospinning solutions with these same materials and their properties and effects of air filtration, are explored.

Biodegradable and high-performance multiscale structured nanofiber membrane as mask filter media via poly(lactic acid) electrospinning

The usage of single-use face masks (SFMs) has increased since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. However, non-degradability and mismanagement of SFMs have raised serious environmental concerns. Moreover, both melt-blown and nanofiber-based mask filters inevitably suffer from poor filtration performance, like a continuous decrease in the removal efficiency for particulate matter (PM) and weak breathability. Herein, we report a new method to create biodegradable and reusable fibrous mask filters. The filter consists of a true nanoscale bio-based poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fiber (an average size of 37 ± 4 nm) that is fabricated via electrospinning of an extremely dilute solution. Furthermore, we designed a multiscale structure with integrated features, such as low basis weight (0.91 g m-2), small pore size (0.73 μm), and high porosity (91.72%), formed by electrospinning deposition of true nanoscale fibers on large pore of 3D scaffold nanofiber membranes. The resultant mask filter exhibited a high filtration efficiency (PM0.3-99.996%) and low pressure drop (104 Pa) superior to the commercial N95 filter. Importantly, this filter has a durable filtering efficiency for PM and natural biodegradability based on PLA. Therefore, this study offers an innovative strategy for the preparation of PLA nanofibers and provides a new design for high-performance nanofiber filters.

Anti-fouling and protein separation of PVDF-g-PMAA@MnO2 filtration membrane with in-situ grown MnO2 nanorods

MnO₂ nanorods with controllable scale were grown in the PVDF-g-PMAA modified membrane to form PVDF-g-PMAA@ MnO₂ membrane through the in situ redox reaction of KMnO₄ solution, which is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray energy-dispersion spectroscopy (EDX). The pore size of the membrane decreased with the increase of KMnO₄ solution concentration. The thermodynamic stability and the hydrophilicity of the membrane were also enhanced by the MnO₂ nanorods. The water flux, bovine serum albumin (BSA)/Lysozyme protein solution flux and rejection, flux recovery, etc. showed effective improvement of the anti-fouling performance of the PVDF-g-PMAA@ MnO₂ membrane. More importantly, it can effectively separate BSA from lysozyme, which provided a potential application in the field of biology, food, and other industrial fields for the requirement of separation and purification.
