Organo-monomers coated slow-release fertilizers: Current understanding and future prospects

The increasing urge to make an impactful contribution towards attaining nutritional security amidst the ever-rising demand for food, changing climate and maintaining environmental health and safety has become the main focal point for today's researchers globally. Slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) are a broad, dynamic, and advance category of fertilizers but despite its environmental benefits and scientifically proven results it often faces some critical challenges, primarily due to its high cost, often stemming from synthetic coatings, deteriorating soil health and with unrevealed potential environmental impacts. Organo-monomers have gained immense popularity due to their organic origin, biodegradable nature, biocompatibility, bio-sustainability and as a targeted delivery of nutrients in the plant system leading to increase in nutrient use efficiency (NUE). They can form strong bond with other monomers, fertilizers elements and improve the soil quality, carbon sequestration and holistically the environment. This review emphasizes on organo-monomers based SRFs, its synthesis, application and deliberate mechanism of nutrient release; boosting crop productivity and global economy. In conclusion, provided the significant challenges posed by the classical or synthetically coated fertilizers; the application of organo-monomers based SRFs demonstrates immense potential for achieving sustainable yield, to help build a global nutritionally secure population.

Evaluating novel biodegradable polymer matrix fertilizers for nitrogen-efficient agriculture

Enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs) can reduce nitrogen (N) losses in temperate agriculture but are less effective in the tropics. We aimed to design a new EEF and evaluate their performance in simple-to-complex tests with tropical soils and crops. We melt-extruded urea at different loadings into biodegradable polymer matrix composites using biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) or polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) polymers with urea distributed throughout the pellet. These contrast with commercially coated EEF that have a polymer-coated urea core. We hypothesized that matrix fertilizers would have an intermediate N release rate compared to fast release from urea or slow release from coated EEF. Nitrogen release rates in water and sand-soil columns confirmed that the matrix fertilizer formulations had a more progressive N release than a coated EEF. A more complex picture emerged from testing sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] grown to maturity in large soil pots, as the different formulations resulted in minor differences in plant N accumulation and grain production. This confirms the need to consider soil interactions, microbial processes, crop physiology, and phenology for evaluating fertilizer performance. Promisingly, crop δ15N signatures emerged as an integrated measure of efficacy, tracking likely N conversions and losses. The three complementary evaluations combine the advantages of standardized high-throughput screening and more resource-intensive and realistic testing in a plant-soil system. We conclude that melt-blended biodegradable polymer matrix fertilizers show promise as EEF because they can be designed toward more abiotically or more microbially driven N release by selecting biopolymer type and N loading rate.

Microbial- and seaweed-based biopolymers: Sources, extractions and implications for soil quality improvement and environmental sustainability - A review

Improving soil quality without creating any environmental problems is an unescapable goal of sustainable agroecosystem management, according to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Therefore, sustainable solutions are in high demand. One of these is the use of biopolymers derived from microbes and seaweed. This paper aims to provide an overview of the sources of extraction and use of microbial (bacteria and cyanobacteria) and seaweed-based biopolymers as soil conditioners, the characteristics of biopolymer-treated soils, and their environmental concerns. A preliminary search was also carried out on the entire Scopus database on biopolymers to find out how much attention has been paid to biopolymers as biofertilizers compared to other applications of these molecules until now. Several soil quality indicators were evaluated, including soil moisture, color, structure, porosity, bulk density, temperature, aggregate stability, nutrient availability, organic matter, and microbial activity. The mechanisms involved in improving soil quality were also discussed.

Advancing horizons in vegetable cultivation: a journey from ageold practices to high-tech greenhouse cultivation-a review

This comprehensive review delves into the broad spectrum of developments in modern vegetable cultivation practices. Rooted in historical traditions, our exploration commences with conventional cultivation methods and traces the progression toward contemporary practices emphasizing the critical shifts that have refined techniques and outcomes. A significant focus is placed on the evolution of seed selection and quality assessment methods underlining the growing importance of seed treatments in enhancing both germination and plant growth. Transitioning from seeds to the soil, we investigate the transformative journey from traditional soil-based cultivation to the adoption of soilless cultures and the utilization of sustainable substrates like biochar and coir. The review also examines modern environmental controls highlighting the use of advanced greenhouse technologies and artificial intelligence in optimizing plant growth conditions. We underscore the increasing sophistication in water management strategies from advanced irrigation systems to intelligent moisture sensing. Additionally, this paper discusses the intricate aspects of precision fertilization, integrated pest management, and the expanding influence of plant growth regulators in vegetable cultivation. A special segment is dedicated to technological innovations, such as the integration of drones, robots, and state-of-the-art digital monitoring systems, in the cultivation process. While acknowledging these advancements, the review also realistically addresses the challenges and economic considerations involved in adopting cutting-edge technologies. In summary, this review not only provides a comprehensive guide to the current state of vegetable cultivation but also serves as a forward-looking reference emphasizing the critical role of continuous research and the anticipation of future developments in this field.

Nano/Micro-Structural Supramolecular Biopolymers: Innovative Networks with the Boundless Potential in Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture plays a crucial role in meeting the growing global demand for food while minimizing adverse environmental impacts from the overuse of synthetic pesticides and conventional fertilizers. In this context, renewable biopolymers being more sustainable offer a viable solution to improve agricultural sustainability and production. Nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers are among these innovative biopolymers that are much sought after for their unique features. These biomaterials have complex hierarchical structures, great stability, adjustable mechanical strength, stimuli-responsiveness, and self-healing attributes. Functional molecules may be added to their flexible structure, for enabling novel agricultural uses. This overview scrutinizes how nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers may radically alter farming practices and solve lingering problems in agricultural sector namely improve agricultural production, soil health, and resource efficiency. Controlled bioactive ingredient released from biopolymers allows the tailored administration of agrochemicals, bioactive agents, and biostimulators as they enhance nutrient absorption, moisture retention, and root growth. Nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers may protect crops by appending antimicrobials and biosensing entities while their eco-friendliness supports sustainable agriculture. Despite their potential, further studies are warranted to understand and optimize their usage in agricultural domain. This effort seeks to bridge the knowledge gap by investigating their applications, challenges, and future prospects in the agricultural sector. Through experimental investigations and theoretical modeling, this overview aims to provide valuable insights into the practical implementation and optimization of supramolecular biopolymers in sustainable agriculture, ultimately contributing to the development of innovative and eco-friendly solutions to enhance agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

Nanocellulose: Structure, modification, biodegradation and applications in agriculture as slow/controlled release fertilizer, superabsorbent, and crop protection: A review

This review investigates the potential of nanocellulose in agriculture, encompassing its structure, synthesis, modification, and applications. Our investigation of the characteristics of nanocellulose includes a comprehensive classification of its structure. Various mechanical, chemical and enzymatic synthesis techniques are evaluated, each offering distinct possibilities. The central role of surface functionalization is thoroughly examined. In particular, we are evaluating the conventional production of nanocellulose, thus contributing to the novelty. This review is a pioneering effort to comprehensively explore the use of nanocellulose in slow and controlled release fertilizers, revolutionizing nutrient management and improving crop productivity with reduced environmental impact. Additionally, our work uniquely integrates diverse applications of nanocellulose in agriculture, ranging from slow-release fertilizers, superabsorbent cellulose hydrogels for drought stress mitigation, and long-lasting crop protection via nanocellulose-based seed coatings. The study ends by identifying challenges and unexplored opportunities in the use of nanocellulose in agriculture. This review makes an innovative contribution by being the first comprehensive study to examine the multiple applications of nanocellulose in agriculture, including slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers.

Proportional impact prediction model of coating material on nitrate leaching of slow-release Urea Super Granules (USG) using machine learning and RSM technique

An accurate assessment of nitrate leaching is important for efficient fertiliser utilisation and groundwater pollution reduction. However, past studies could not efficiently model nitrate leaching due to utilisation of conventional algorithms. To address the issue, the current research employed advanced machine learning algorithms, viz., Support Vector Machine, Artificial Neural Network, Random Forest, M5 Tree (M5P), Reduced Error Pruning Tree (REPTree) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to predict and optimize nitrate leaching. In this study, Urea Super Granules (USG) with three different coatings were used for the experiment in the soil columns, containing 1 kg soil with fertiliser placed in between. Statistical parameters, namely correlation coefficient, Mean Absolute Error, Willmott index, Root Mean Square Error and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency were used to evaluate the performance of the ML techniques. In addition, a comparison was made in the test set among the machine learning models in which, RSM outperformed the rest of the models irrespective of coating type. Neem oil/ Acacia oil(ml): clay/sulfer (g): age (days) for minimum nitrate leaching was found to be 2.61: 1.67: 2.4 for coating of USG with bentonite clay and neem oil without heating, 2.18: 2: 1 for bentonite clay and neem oil with heating and 1.69: 1.64: 2.18 for coating USG with sulfer and acacia oil. The research would provide guidelines to researchers and policymakers to select the appropriate tool for precise prediction of nitrate leaching, which would optimise the yield and the benefit-cost ratio.

Fabrication of multi-functional biodegradable liquid mulch utilizing xyloglucan derived from tamarind waste for agricultural application

Biodegradable liquid mulch is considered a promising alternative to plastic mulch for sustainable agriculture. This work proposed a xyloglucan-based liquid mulch with multi-function using a combination of chemical modification and blending methods. The esterification product of tamarind xyloglucan (TXG) from forestry wastes was synthesized with benzoic anhydride (BA). The effect of esterification modification was investigated, and BA-TXG was utilized as a film-forming and sand-fixation agent. The rheological properties, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity were improved following esterification. Additionally, waterborne polyurethane and urea were incorporated into the mulch to enhance its mechanical strength (23.28 MPa, 80.71 %), and homogeneity, as well as improve its nutritive properties. The xyloglucan-based liquid mulch has excellent UV protection, a high haze value (approximately 90 %), and retains water at a rate of 80.45 %. SEM and immersion experiment showed the effect of xyloglucan-based liquid mulch on sustainable sand-fixation. Moreover, the liquid mulch treatment demonstrated an impressive germination rate of 83.8 % and degradation rate of 51.59 % (60 days). The modified polysaccharide film increases stability and slows down the degradation rate. Tamarind xyloglucan-based liquid mulch exhibits powerful and diverse optical properties as well as sand fixation functions, indicating their great potential in sustainable agriculture as an alternative to plastic mulch.

Bibliometric and literature review of the development of mineral fertilizers

Mineral fertilizers are a new type of sustainable fertilizers, containing natural ores as the primary raw material with various nutrients and organic matters. This study combines two methods of bibliometric analysis to comprehensively review the progress of mineral fertilizers from 2000 to 2021. The results showed that the research on mineral fertilizers has increased in the past 21 years, especially after 2014. Developed countries studied mineral fertilizers more extensively than developing countries, but some developing countries, such as China and India, are also paying attention to this area in recent years. Chinese Academic of Sciences, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences were the main publishing institutions. Nutrient elements, changes in soil properties, and the effects on promoting crop growth were the main contents of the research. Still, such issues as bioremediation, soil environment improvement, and crop resistance are becoming hot spots. The field of mineral fertilizers showed a strong interdisciplinary nature and an increasingly comprehensive research perspective. The goal is that this synthesis will be used as a starting point for a broader study on responsible environmental management and research on improving fertilizer use efficiency.

It emphasizes the role of starch-based hydrogels as effective nutrient carriers, enabling their sustained release to plants over extended periods. Additionally, incorporating starch-based hydrogel nano-composites are explored, highlighting their potential in optimizing nutrient release profiles and promoting plant growth. Furthermore, the review highlights the benefits of starch-based fertilizers in enhancing plant growth and crop yield while minimizing nutrient losses. It presents case studies and field trials demonstrating starch-based formulations' efficacy in promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Overall, this review consolidates current knowledge on starch, its modifications, and its applications in SRFs, providing valuable insights into the potential of starch-based formulations to improve nutrient management, boost crop productivity, and support sustainable agriculture.

Alginate-based composites as novel soil conditioners for sustainable applications in agriculture: A critical review

The development of alginate-based composites in agriculture to combat nutrient loss and drought for sustainable development has drawn increasing attention in the scientific community. Existing studies are however scattered, and the retention and slow-release mechanisms of alginate-based composites are not well understood. This paper systematically reviews the current literature on the preparation, characterization, and agricultural applications of various alginate-based composites. The synthesis methods of alginate-based composites are firstly summarized, followed by a review of available analytical techniques to characterize alginate-based composites for the attainment of their desired performance. Secondly, the performance and controlling factors for agricultural applications of alginate-based composites are discussed, including aquasorb, slow-release fertilizer, soil amendment, microbial inoculants, and controlled release of pesticides for pest management. Finally, suggestions and future perspectives are proposed to expand the applications of alginate-based composites for sustainable agriculture.

Increasing the efficiency of agricultural fertilizers using cellulose nanofibrils: A review

Developing new agricultural products, such as new fertilizers with high use efficiency and less negative impact on the environment, is required in sustainable agriculture. In this vein, controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) have been designed to decrease nutrient waste and increase nutrients' availability to plants. Various CRFs have been developed based on petroleum-derived polymers with many advantages over conventional fertilizers. Although, their use is limited due to their adverse effects on the soil and environment. To overcome these issues, CRFs based on biopolymers represent a new generation of fertilizers developed by encapsulating nutrients with cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). CNFs and the hydrogels based on CNFs have great potential to be applied as CRFs matrix as they are biodegradable, minimize environmental pollution, and exhibit a great controlled-release potential and water/nutrient retention capacity. In order to gain a better understanding of the potential benefits of these new fertilizers in agricultural systems, this review summarizes the recent advances in CNFs in CRFs, the coating methods, hydrogel preparation techniques, and their impact on plant growth and soil. By examining these factors in depth, a better understanding can be gained on how these novel fertilizers can help improve agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Enhancing the Properties of Polyvinyl Alcohol Films by Blending with Corn Stover-Derived Cellulose Nanocrystals and Beeswax

Coating is a technique to surround a target substance with a thin layer to obtain desirable properties. Polyvinyl alcohols (PVAs) are biodegradable plastics and have shown good applicability as a coating or film material. Cellulose nanocrystals are a promising green nanomaterial that has been shown to enhance the properties of PVA after blending. However, these PVA/CNC films have concerns in a moist environment due to high hydrophilicity. To overcome this issue, the current study incorporated beeswax into PVA/CNC films and investigated the effect of CNC and beeswax on the properties of the coatings and films. Results showed that the addition of corn stover-derived CNCs to PVA films increased tensile strength (from 11 to 25 MPa) and Young's modulus (from 32 to 173 MPa) and reduced water vapor transmission rate (from 25 to 20 g h-1 m-2). Beeswax added to PVA/CNC films further improved water vapor barrier properties (from 20 to 9 g h-1 m-2) and maintained Young's modulus (from 173 to 160 MPa), though it caused a reduction in the tensile strength (from 25 to 11 MPa) of the films. This information can help to select materials for blending with PVAs by obtaining the desirable endmost properties depending on applications.

New Straw Coating Material for Improving the Slow-Release Performance of Fertilizers

In this work, we extracted cellulose from agricultural waste and produced a new straw coating material (ethyl cellulose, EC) through a series of modification operations. The slow-release properties of ethyl cellulose-coated urea (EU) and its absorption and utilization by plants were evaluated. The surface of EU can form a smooth and fine film, and the initial nutrient release rate is only 37.91% that of the uncoated fertilizer. Compared with common urea, the nitrogen of plants cultivated with EU increased by 17.69%, and the leached nitrogen decreased by 61.29%, indicating that EU can reduce nitrogen waste to the greatest extent and continuously supply nutrients to crops. Therefore, the application of EU could be a more practical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable alternative to nitrogen fertilizers.

Insights into the Potential of Biopolymeric Aerogels as an Advanced Soil-Fertilizer Delivery Systems

Soil fertilizers have the potential to significantly increase crop yields and improve plant health by providing essential nutrients to the soil. The use of fertilizers can also help to improve soil structure and fertility, leading to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems. However, overuse or improper use of fertilizers can lead to soil degradation, which can reduce soil fertility, decrease crop yields, and damage ecosystems. Thus, several attempts have been made to overcome the issues related to the drawbacks of fertilizers, including the development of an advanced fertilizer delivery system. Biopolymer aerogels show promise as an innovative solution to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of soil-fertilizer delivery systems. Further research and development in this area could lead to the widespread adoption of biopolymer aerogels in agriculture, promoting sustainable farming practices and helping to address global food-security challenges. This review discusses for the first time the potential of biopolymer-based aerogels in soil-fertilizer delivery, going through the types of soil fertilizer and the advert health and environmental effects of overuse or misuse of soil fertilizers. Different types of biopolymer-based aerogels were discussed in terms of their potential in fertilizer delivery and, finally, the review addresses the challenges and future directions of biopolymer aerogels in soil-fertilizer delivery.

Improvement of tomato yield and quality using slow release NPK fertilizers prepared by carnauba wax emulsion, starch-based latex and hydrogel nanocomposite combination

The modern agriculture is working on introducing new generation of fertilizers that apt to slow down the nutrients release to be more in synchrony with plant's need throughout growth season, enhance fertilizer performance, and decrease nutrient losses into the environment. The aim of this research was to develop an advanced NPK slow-release fertilizer (SRF) and investigate its effect on yield, nutritional and morphological responses of tomato plant (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) as a model crop. To this goal, three water-based bio-polymeric formulations including starch-g-poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) nanocomposite hydrogel, starch-g-poly(styrene-co-butylacrylate) latex, and carnauba wax emulsion were synthesized and used for production of NPK-SRF samples. Different samples of coated fertilizers (urea, potassium sulfate, and superphosphate granules) were prepared using different ratios of latex and wax emulsion, and for phosphorus and potash (R-treatment). Moreover, some of coated fertilizers (15 and 30 wt.%) was replaced with nanocomposite hydrogel containing fertilizers, named D and H treatments, respectively. The effect of SRF samples were compared with commercial fertilizers (NPK treatment) and a commercial SRF (T treatment), on the growth of tomato in the greenhouse, at two different levels (100 and 60). The efficiency of all the synthesized formulations were higher than NPK and T treatments, and among them, H100 significantly improved the morphological and physiological characteristics of tomato. For instance, amount of residual elements (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) as well as micro elements of calcium, iron and zinc in tomato cultivation bed and accordingly the uptake of these elements in the roots, aerial parts and fruits were increased in the R, H, and D treatments. The highest yield (1671.54 g), highest agricultural agronomy efficiency of fertilizer, and the highest dry matter percentage (9.52%) were obtained in H100. The highest amount of lycopene, antioxidant capacity and vitamin C was also observed in H100. Nitrate accumulation in tomato fruit in the synthesized SRF samples were decreased significantly compared to NPK100, and the lowest amount was observed in H100, which was 55.24% less than NPK100. Accordingly, it is suggested that combination of natural-based nanocomposite hydrogels along with coating latexes and wax emulsions can be a successful method to synthesize efficient NPK-SRF formulations for improvement of crop growth and quality.

Green construction and release mechanism of lignin-based double-layer coated urea

BACKGROUND

Lignin played an important role in the establishment of coated fertilizers coating material as a substitute for petrochemical raw materials. However, so far, the lignin-based coated fertilizers was limited in only the poor slow-release performance. To achieve good slow-release performance of lignin-based coated fertilizers, hydrophilic of lignin need to be resolved to establish an green and better controllable lignin-based coated fertilizers.

RESULTS

In the study, a novel green double layer coating with lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) as the inner coating and epoxy resin (EP) as the outer coating was effectively constructed for coated urea. Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that lignin and polycaprolactone diol successfully reacted with Hexamethylene diisocyanate. The loss weight and water contact angle (WCA, 75.6-63.6°) of the LPUs decreased with the increased lignin content. The average particle hardness of the lignin-based double-layer coated urea (LDCU) first increased from 58.1 N (lignin of 30%) to 67.0 N (lignin of 60%), but then decreased to 62.3 N (lignin of 70%). The release longevity of the coated urea was closely related to the preparation parameters of the coating material. The optimal cumulative nutrient release rate (79.4%) of LDCU was obtained (lignin of 50%, -CNO/-OH molar ratios of 1.15, EP of 35%, and coating ratio of 5%). The aggregates of hydrone on the LDCU caused the dissolution and swelling of nutrients, and then the diffusion of nutrients through the concentration gradient.

CONCLUSIONS

A though the nutrient release of the LDCUs was affected by many factors, the successful development of the LDCUs will help improve the rapid development of the coated fertilizer industry.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate polymer membranes as eco-friendly and biodegradable coatings for slow release fertilizers

BACKGROUND

The use of slow release fertilizers (SRFs) is an effective approach for reducing agriculture cost, environmental and ecological issues simultaneously. The present study provides a series of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA) polymer membranes as eco-friendly and biodegradable coatings for SRFs. Moreover, polymer-coated urea (PCU) granules were fabricated through coating the urea granules with the resulting membranes. Our first interest was to fabricate three membranes (PS1, PS2, PS3) of different PVA/SA weight ratios (9:1, 8:2, 7:3) using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent, and crosslink the PS3 membrane with a CaCl₂ solution further to obtain the PC3 membrane. The chemical properties and morphologies of the membranes were characterized. Second, the nitrogen release behavior of the PCU granules was measured and calculated, respectively.

RESULTS

Crosslinking with glutaraldehyde made the PS1, PS2, PS3 membranes uniform and compact, whereas crosslinking with a CaCl₂ solution formed an 'egg box' structure inside the PC3 membrane. PS3 membrane with the minimum PVA/SA weight ratio had the highest hydrophily (water uptake: 106.25%, water contact angle: 55.1^o ), whereas PC3 membrane had the lowest hydrophily (water uptake: 21.57%, water contact angle: 67.3^o ). The biodegradation ratios of the membranes were in the range 44-60% in 90 days, indicating that they had excellent biodegradability. The measured fractional release on the day 30 of the PCU granules ranged from 89.33% to 97.07%. The calculated nitrogen release behavior agreed well with the measured values.

CONCLUSION

The resulting eco-friendly and biodegradable PVA/SA membranes are alternative coatings for SRFs. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Engineered nanoparticles in plant growth: Phytotoxicity concerns and the strategies for their attenuation

In the agricultural sector, the use of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) has been acclaimed as the next big thing for sustaining and increasing crop productivity. A vast amount of literature is available regarding the growth-promoting attributes of different ENPs. In this context, it has been emphasized that the ENPs can bolster vegetative growth, leaf development, and seed setting and also help in mitigating the effects of abiotic and biotic stresses. At the same time, there have been a lot of speculations and concerns regarding the phytotoxicity of ENPs off-late. In this connection, many research articles have presented the negative effects of ENPs on plant systems. These studies have highlighted that almost all the ENPs impart a certain degree of phytotoxicity in terms of reduction in growth, biomass, impairment of photosynthesis, oxidative status of plant cells, etc. Mostly, the ENPs based on metal or metal oxides (Cd, Cr, Pb, Ag, Ce, etc.) and nonmetals (C) that are introduced into the environment are known to incite inhibitory effects. However, the phytotoxicity of ENPs are known to be determined mostly by the chemical nature of the element, size, surface charge, coating molecules, and abiotic factors like pH and light. This review article, therefore, elucidates the phytotoxic properties of different ENPs and the plant responses induced at the molecular level subjected to nanoparticle exposure. Moreover, the article highlights the probable strategies that may be adopted for the suppression of the phytotoxicity of ENPs to ensure the safe and sustainable application of ENPs in crop fields.

Optimization of sodium alginate-galactoxyloglucan blended hydrogel beads through ionotropic gelation method

Hydrogels are 3D crosslinking networks of hydrophilic biopolymers which can able to absorb and retain large amount of water. In this present study, the Sodium alginate (SA)- Galactoxyloglucan (GXG) blended hydrogel beads were prepared and optimized through two level optimization steps. Alginates and xyloglucan are the cell wall polysaccharides biopolymers obtained from the plant sources, Sargassum sp. and Tamarindus indica L. respectively. The extracted biopolymers were confirmed and characterized by UV-Spectroscopy, FT-IR, NMR and TGA analysis. Based on the hydrophilicity, non-toxicity and biocompatibility, SA-GXG hydrogel were prepared and optimized through two-level optimization steps. The optimized hydrogel bead formulation was characterized through FT-IR, TGA and SEM analysis. From the obtained result, it is found that the polymeric formulation GXG (2 % w/v)-SA (1.5 % w/v), cross-linker (CaCl₂) concentration at 0.1 M and the cross-linking time at 15 Min showed significant swelling index. The optimized hydrogel beads are porous and show good swelling capacity and thermal stability. The optimized protocol of hydrogel beads may be useful in designing hydrogel beads for specific applications in agricultural, Biomedical and remediation sectors.

Dynamic Monitoring of Nutrition Inputs and Fertility Evaluation during a Decade in the Main Peach-Producing Areas of Shandong Province, China

The main peach-producing area in Shandong is an important peach fruit-producing area in China. Understanding the nutritional properties of the soil in peach orchards helps us to understand the evolution of soil properties and adjust management methods in a timely manner. This study focuses on 52 peach orchards in the main peach-producing area in Shandong as the research object. The spatiotemporal changes in soil traits and their influential factors were studied in depth, and the changes in soil fertility were effectively evaluated. The results showed that the input of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from organic fertilizer in 2021 was significantly higher than that in 2011, while the input of fertilizer in 2011 was significantly higher than that in 2021. Compared with traditional parks, both organic fertilizer inputs and chemical fertilizer inputs in demonstration parks showed a significant downwards trend. There was no significant change in pH values between 2011 and 2021. In 2021, the soil organic matter (SOM) contents of the 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm layers were 24.17 g·kg^-1 and 23.38 g·kg^-1, respectively, an increase of 29.3% and 78.47% over the values measured in 2011. Compared with 2011, the content of soil alkaloid nitrogen (AN) decreased significantly in 2021, and the contents of available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK) in the soil increased significantly. According to the calculation results of the comprehensive fertility index (IFI) value, we found that in 2021, compared with 2011, the quality of soil fertility improved, most of which was at the medium and high levels. The research results show that the fertilizer-saving and synergistic approach in peach orchards in China significantly improved the soil nutrition. In the future, research on suitable comprehensive technologies should be strengthened in the management of peach orchards.

The current status and challenges of biomass biorefineries in Africa: A critical review and future perspectives for bioeconomy development

Africa benefits from diverse biomasses that are rich in high-added value materials and precursors for energy, food, agricultural, cosmetic and medicinal applications. Many African countries are interested in valorizing biomasses to develop efficient and integrated biorefinery processes and their use for local and regional economic development. Thus, this report critically reviews the current status of African biomass richness, its diversity, and potential applications. Moreover, particular attention is given to bioenergy production, mainly by biological and thermochemical conversion processes. This also includes biomass valorization in agriculture, particularly for the production of plant-based biostimulants, which are a potential emerging agri-input sector worldwide. This study points out that even though several processes for biofuel, biogas, biofertilizer and biostimulant production have already been established in Africa, their development on a larger scale remains limited. This study also reports the different socioeconomic and political aspects of biomass applications, along with their challenges, opportunities, and future research perspectives, to promote concrete technologies transferable into an industrial level.

The Biomodified Lignin Platform: A Review

A reliance on fossil fuel has led to the increased emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). The excessive consumption of raw materials today makes the search for sustainable resources more pressing than ever. Technical lignins are mainly used in low-value applications such as heat and electricity generation. Green enzyme-based modifications of technical lignin have generated a number of functional lignin-based polymers, fillers, coatings, and many other applications and materials. These bio-modified technical lignins often display similar properties in terms of their durability and elasticity as fossil-based materials while also being biodegradable. Therefore, it is possible to replace a wide range of environmentally damaging materials with lignin-based ones. By researching publications from the last 20 years focusing on the latest findings utilizing databases, a comprehensive collection on this topic was crafted. This review summarizes the recent progress made in enzymatically modifying technical lignins utilizing laccases, peroxidases, and lipases. The underlying enzymatic reaction mechanisms and processes are being elucidated and the application possibilities discussed. In addition, the environmental assessment of novel technical lignin-based products as well as the developments, opportunities, and challenges are highlighted.

Starch-based controlled release fertilizers: A review

Starch, as a widely available renewable resource, has the potential to be used in the production of controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) that support sustainable agriculture. These CRFs can be formed by incorporating nutrients through coating or absorption, or by chemically modifying the starch to enhance its ability to carry and interact with nutrients. This review examines the various methods of creating starch-based CRFs, including coating, chemical modification, and grafting with other polymers. In addition, the mechanisms of controlled release in starch-based CRFs are discussed. Overall, the potential benefits of using starch-based CRFs in terms of resource efficiency and environmental protection are highlighted.

Reduced nutrient release and greenhouse gas emissions of lignin-based coated urea by synergy of carbon black and polysiloxane

An advanced hydrophobic lignin-based polyurethane coated urea (HLPCU) was successfully developed by synergy of carbon black (CB) and polysiloxane. In this work, CB and polysiloxane were employed to modify the liquefied lignin-based polyurethane (LLPU) and improve it's the hydrophobicity. The effects of polysiloxane contents and coating rates on the nutrient release of HLPCU were thoroughly investigated. The lignin was degraded into polyol with a low molecular weight. FT-IR, XPS and EDX results confirmed that polysiloxane was grafted to the LLPU. The water contact angle (WCA) of the HLPUs (89.39°-98.68°) gradually increased as the polysiloxane content rose (5 %-15 %). However, when the polysiloxane content further increased to 20 %, the WCA of the HLPUs rapidly declined (90.82°). A proper amount of polysiloxane molecules could increase thermo-physical properties of LLPU. The almost no pores were observed on the section micrograph of the HLPCU obtained by synergy of CB and polysiloxane. Synergy between CB and polysiloxane could significantly improve hydrophobicity and then enhance N release longevity of HLPCU (polysiloxane content of 15 %, coating rates of 7 %) up to 44 days. Compared to traditional urea, HLPCU could improve total N use efficiency the cabbage. The HLPCU and HLPCU85 treatments (15 % weight loss with fertilization) reduced the greenhouse effect of N₂O, CO₂ and CH₄ and finally reduced GWP, especially for HLPCU85 treatment. This work will supply an advanced approach and process technology for progress of HLPCU and sustainable agriculture.

Nutrient controlled release performance of bio-based coated fertilizer enhanced by synergistic effects of liquefied starch and siloxane

The porous structure and hydrophilicity of coating shells affect the nutrient controlled-release performance of castor oil-based (CO) coated fertilizers. In order to solve these problems, in this study, the castor oil-based polyurethane (PCU) coating material was modified with liquefied starch polyol (LS) and siloxane, and a new coating material with cross-linked network structure and hydrophobic surface was synthesized, and used it to prepare the coated controlled-release urea (SSPCU). The results demonstrated that the cross-linked network formed by LS and CO improved the density and reduced the pores on the surface of the coating shells. The siloxane was grafted on the surface of coating shells to improve its hydrophobicity and thus delayed water entry. The nitrogen release experiment indicated that the synergistic effects of LS and siloxane improved the nitrogen controlled-release performance of bio-based coated fertilizers. Nutrient released longevity of SSPCU with 7 % coating percentage reached >63 days. Moreover, the nutrient release mechanism of coated fertilizer was further revealed by the analysis of the release kinetics analysis. Therefore, the results of this study provide a new idea and technical support for development of efficient and environment-friendly bio-based coated controlled-release fertilizers.

Synthesis and performance evaluation of slow-release fertilizers produced from inverse vulcanized copolymers obtained from industrial waste

To improve crop nutrient uptake efficacy (NUE) and better manage fertilization, slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) are developed by either coating the urea granules or making a composite. Several materials have already been developed, nevertheless, scalability of those materials is still a challenge due to their inherit drawbacks (such as hydrophilicity, crystallinity, non-biodegradability, etc.). Herein, we utilized a biodegradable, green and sustainable copolymer produced from industrial waste (sulfur-petroleum industry waste and myrcene-citrus industry waste) to coat the urea using a facile coating method to develop novel SRFs and achieve better agronomic and environmental advantages. The copolymer was first synthesized using a facile, solvent-free one-pot method called inverse vulcanization followed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis to confirm the successful reaction between myrcene and sulfur subsequently coating the copolymer on urea granule. The morphology and coating thickness of coated fertilizers were analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), followed by a nitrogen release test in distilled water and a soil burial test to confirm the biodegradability. The nitrogen release test revealed that the SRF with the maximum coating thickness of 1733 μm releases only 16% of its total nitrogen after 4 days of incubation compared to the pristine urea which releases all its nutrient within 1 day. The soil burial test confirms the biodegradability of the copolymer, as after 50 days of incubation in soil the copolymer loses almost 18.25% of its total weight indicating that the copolymer is degrading.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Premna Oblongifolia Merr. Extract/Glutaraldehyde/Carbon Nanotube (VOGC)-Based Composite Hydrogel: A Potential Candidate for Controlled-Release Materials

A hydrogel based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (V), Premna Oblongifolia Merr. extract (O), glutaraldehyde (G), and carbon nanotubes (C) has been synthesized in search of candidates to develop controlled-release fertilizers (CRF). Referring to previous studies, O and C can be considered as two materials that have potential as modifiers in synthesizing CRF. This work is comprised of hydrogel synthesis, their characterisation, including measuring swelling ratio (SR) and water retention (WR) of VOG_m , VOG_e , VOG_m C₃ , VOG_m C₅ , VOG_m C₇ , VOG_m C₇ -KCl, and release behaviour of KCl from VOG_m C₇ -KCl. We found that C interacts physically with VOG, increased the surface roughness of VOG_m , and reduced the VOG_m crystallite size. The addition of KCl into VOG_m C₇ reduced the pore size and increased the structural density of VOG_m C₇ . The thickness and the C content of VOG affected its SR and WR. The addition of KCl into VOG_m C₇ reduced its SR, but did not significantly affect its WR.

Nanofibrous/biopolymeric membrane a sustainable approach to remove organic micropollutants: A review

Aquifers are severely polluted with organic and inorganic pollutants, posing a serious threat to the global ecological system's balance. While various traditional methods are available, the development of innovative methods for effluent treatment and reuse is critical. Polymers have recently been widely used in a variety of industry sectors due to their unique properties. Biopolymers are a biodegradable material that is also a viable alternative to synthetic polymers. Biopolymers are preferably obtained from cellulose and carrageenan molecules from various biological sources. While compared with conventional non-biodegradable polymeric materials, the biopolymer possesses unique characteristics such as renewability, cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. The improvements towards the biopolymeric (natural) membranes have also been thoroughly discussed. The use of nanofillers to stabilise and improve the effectiveness of biopolymeric membranes in the elimination of organic pollutants is one of the most recent developments. This was discovered that the majority of biopolymeric membranes technology consolidated on organic pollutants. More research should be directed toward against emerging organic/persistent organic pollutants (POP) and micropollutants. Furthermore, processes for regenerating and reusing utilized biopolymer-based carbon - based materials are emphasized.

The strategic applications of natural polymer nanocomposites in food packaging and agriculture: Chances, challenges, and consumers' perception

Natural polymer-based nanocomposites have received significant attention in both scientific and industrial research in recent years. They can help to eliminate the consequences of application of petroleum-derived polymeric materials and related environmental concerns. Such nanocomposites consist of natural biopolymers (e.g., chitosan, starch, cellulose, alginate and many more) derived from plants, microbes and animals that are abundantly available in nature, biodegradable and thus eco-friendly, and can be used for developing nanocomposites for agriculture and food industry applications. Biopolymer-based nanocomposites can act as slow-release nanocarriers for delivering agrochemicals (fertilizers/nutrients) or pesticides to crop plants to increase yields. Similarly, biopolymer-based nanofilms or hydrogels may be used as direct product coating to extend product shelf life or improve seed germination or protection from pathogens and pests. Biopolymers have huge potential in food-packaging. However, their packaging properties, such as mechanical strength or gas, water or microbial barriers can be remarkably improved when combined with nanofillers such as nanoparticles. This article provides an overview of the strategic applications of natural polymer nanocomposites in food and agriculture as nanocarriers of active compounds, polymer-based hydrogels, nanocoatings and nanofilms. However, the risk, challenges, chances, and consumers' perceptions of nanotechnology applications in agriculture and food production and packaging have been also discussed.

Environmentally friendly preparation of lignin/paraffin/epoxy resin composite-coated urea and evaluation for nitrogen efficiency in lettuce

Novel lignin/paraffin/epoxy resin composite coated urea (LPECCU) was successfully prepared. Paraffin and epoxy resin (ER) were used to improve the slow-release properties of the lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) coated urea. The relationships among the N release characteristics, liquid-solid rate, -CNO/-OH molar rate and film formation rate in the coating material of LPECCU were investigated. The results showed that the water contact angle (WCA) of the LPU-paraffin increased with the rate of liquid-solid rate (73.61-88.19°) and -CNO/-OH molar rate (65.17-82.24°) increased. The average particle hardness of LPECCU decreased with the increased of liquid-solid rate (57.10-66.80 N) and the reduced of -CNO/-OH molar rate (48.11-63.00 N). The LPECCU emerged compact micro-structure, low sustained release and high compressive resistance by adding paraffin and ER. The coating material of LPECCU appeared excellent biodegradability in the soil. The optimal N cumulative release rate (72.49 %) of LPECCU was obtained (liquid-solid rate of 1.43, -CNO/-OH molar rate of 2, and the film formation rate of 6.66 %). The lettuce growth study was conducted to further evaluate the pot application of the LPECCU. In comparison to conventional urea, LPECCU could improve the total dry matter accumulation and N use efficiency of the lettuce.

Statistical optimization of a sustainable fertilizer composition based on black soldier fly larvae as source of nitrogen

In the present work, a statistical optimization of a sustainable coating for core-shell NPK (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) fertilizers was investigated. The environmental green coating was enriched in nitrogen using a biomass and renewable source, namely the nitrogen rich fraction of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) (Hermetia Illucens, Diptera: Stratiomyidae) reared on vegetable waste. A rational approach was proposed with the aim of calculating the best formulation of the coating, considering both its manufacturing behavior, such as adhesion to the core, and its physical properties, such as homogeneity or plasticity. From a circular economy perspective, together with the nitrogen-rich fraction from BSFL (from 51 to 90 wt.%), water and glycerol were considered for the coating formulation in different proportion: from 10 to 32 wt.% and from 0 to 17 wt.% respectively. The Design of Experiments technique was implemented to limit the total number of tests for the coating formulation (18 tests). ANOVA was employed, with the aim of obtaining mathematical models to derive a better precise and objective formulation. The results show that the use of glycerol can be avoided, as well as only a limited amount of water (11 wt.%) is necessary to obtain an optimized coating formulation, thereafter, satisfying the more relevant technological and physical properties for the coating manufacturing.

Response of rhizosphere microbial community of Chinese chives under different fertilization treatments

Soil microorganisms play an irreplaceable role in agricultural production, however, an understanding of response of soil microorganisms to slow-release and common fertilizer applications is limited. In this study, different amounts of slow- release fertilizer were used to overwintering Chinese chives growing area in a plastic greenhouse to investigate the effects of on rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities (bacteria and fungi) of Chinese chives. The result displayed that application of slow-release fertilizer significantly improved soil nutrients, soil enzyme activity, and soil microbial community structure and diversity compared to conventional fertilizer application. Compared with T1 treatment, the content of total nitrogen (TN) and available phosphorus (AP), and the SU-E activity in the soil of T2 (NPK: 62.8 kg · 667 m-2) increased by 42.58%, 16.67%, and 9.70%, respectively, showing the best effects. In addition, soil bacterial diversity index and soil microbial community structure were improved as indicated by increased relative abundance of each species, such as Byssovorax, Sandaracinus, and Cellvibrio. Oppositely, the both soil fungal diversity and the number of species decreased after fertilizationthe relative abundance of Ascomycota increased in each fertilization treatment detected by ITS sequencing. Further, the relative abundance of pathogenic fungi such as Pezizomycetes, Cantharellales, and Pleosporales decreased in the T2 treatment. Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) showed that both the amount of fertilizer applied and the type of fertilizer applied affected the soil microbial community structure. RDA evidenced that soil bacteria, Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes, were closely correlated with soil AN, SOM, and AK. Acidobacteria were closely correlated with soil pH, TN, and AP. Ascomycota was closely correlated with soil pH and TN. In conclusion, the application of slow-release fertilizers and reduced fertilizer applicationcould improve soil physical and chemical properties as well as soil microbial community structure and diversity, contributing to sustainable soil development. The recommended fertilization rate for overwintering Chinese chives is NPK: 62.8 kg · 667 m-2.

Innovative bio-waste-based multilayer hydrogel fertilizers as a new solution for precision agriculture

The aim of the research work was to present a multilayer hydrogel capsule with controlled nutrient release properties as an innovative fertilizer designed for sustainable agriculture. Preparation of the capsules included the following steps: sorption of micronutrients (Cu, Mn, Zn) on eggshells (1) and their immobilization in sodium alginate, with the crosslinking agent being the NPK solution (2). The capsules were coated with an additional layer of a mixture of biopolymers (0.79% alginate, 0.24% carboxymethylcellulose and 8.07% starch)by means of dipping and spraying techniques. The biocomposites were characterized by limited (<10% within 100 h for the structures encapsulated by the dipping method) release of fertilizer ions (except for small K⁺ ions). The hydrogel fertilizer formulations were analyzed for physicochemical properties such as macro- and micronutrient content, surface morphology analysis, coating structure evaluation, mechanical properties, swelling and drying kinetics. High nutrient bioavailability was confirmed in vitro (extraction in water and neutral ammonium citrate). Germination and pot tests have revealed that the application of multicomponent hydrogel fertilizers increases the length of cucumber roots by 20%, compared to the commercial product.

Subdiffusion equation with Caputo fractional derivative with respect to another function in modeling diffusion in a complex system consisting of a matrix and channels

Anomalous diffusion of an antibiotic (colistin) in a system consisting of packed gel (alginate) beads immersed in water is studied experimentally and theoretically. The experimental studies are performed using the interferometric method of measuring concentration profiles of a diffusing substance. We use the g-subdiffusion equation with the fractional Caputo time derivative with respect to another function g to describe the process. The function g and relevant parameters define anomalous diffusion. We show that experimentally measured time evolution of the amount of antibiotic released from the system determines the function g. The process can be interpreted as subdiffusion in which the subdiffusion parameter (exponent) α decreases over time. The g-subdiffusion equation, which is more general than the "ordinary" fractional subdiffusion equation, can be widely used in various fields of science to model diffusion in a system in which parameters, and even a type of diffusion, evolve over time. We postulate that diffusion in a system composed of channels and a matrix can be described by the g-subdiffusion equation, just like diffusion in a system of packed gel beads placed in water.

Optimized Fertilization Practices Improved Rhizosphere Soil Chemical and Bacterial Properties and Fresh Waxy Maize Yield

The interactive mechanism of root and soil for achieving high and stable yield of maize is still unclear. Synchronizing soil nutrient supply with crop requirements by optimizing fertilization is effective cultivation measures to improve maize yield. In this study, field trials were conducted to investigate the dynamic changes of optimized fertilization on chemical and bacterial properties in rhizosphere soil, root physiological properties, and yield of fresh waxy maize. Optimized fertilization practices (one-time application of new compound fertilizer at sowing, three-, and six-leaf stages, denoted as F1, F2, and F3), local traditional fertilization (F4), and no fertilization (F0) were set up in 2-year field experiments at two sites. F3 increased the fresh ear (10.2%) and grain (9.4%) yields relative to F4. Optimized fertilization practices increased the abundance and diversity of rhizosphere soil bacterial communities at R3. The enzymatic activities of oxidoreductase, hydrolase, transferase, and lyase in rhizosphere soil under F3 were higher than those in other treatments at R1 and R3. F3 increased the contents of organic matter and total N in rhizosphere soil, as well as the root activities. These findings provide physiological information from underground on optimized fertilization types and stages in enhancing the yield of fresh waxy maize. One-time application of new compound fertilizer at six-leaf stage increased the abundance and diversity of bacterial, organic matter and total N content in rhizosphere soil, enhanced root activity at post-silking stage, and eventually improved yield of fresh waxy maize in southern China.

Development of Biodegradable PLA/PBAT-Based Filaments for Fertilizer Release for Agricultural Applications

The aim of this work was to produce filaments of PLA/PBAT and NPK fertilizer adsorbed on organophilized bentonite intended for application in the prototyping of biodegradable agricultural artifacts in 3D printing, using the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technique. This is the first time that we have reported this composite for a 3D printing approach. Systems containing PLA/PBAT, organobentonite and NPK were initially processed in an internal mixer and later extruded as filaments in a single-screw extruder. The prototypes were printed by FDM. Structural, morphological and thermal properties, as well as NPK releasing, were investigated. The results suggest that exfoliated and/or intercalated nanocomposites were obtained by the organoclay addition to the PLA/PBAT blend. The morphological analysis revealed a good surface quality of the impressions. Systems containing organobentonite released approximately 22% less fertilizer in 24 h compared to the systems without organobentonite. This difference is due to the higher concentration of nanoparticles that generate more barriers to the diffusion of NPK. The release data for these systems had a better fit to the kinetic model of Korsmeyer-Peppas. Thus, studied filaments have the potential to retard the release of fertilizer and are suitable for further development of structures for agricultural applications by FDM.

In Silico CFD Investigation of the Granulation Hydrodynamics in Rotating Drum: Process Sensitivity to the Operating Parameters and Drag Models

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been extensively used to simulate the hydrodynamics of multiphase flows (MPFs) in rotating machinery. In the presence of a granular dense phase, the Kinetic Theory of Granular Flow (KTGF) is usually coupled to Eulerian multi-fluid models to obtain tractable computational fluid models. In the present work, the hydrodynamic behavior of a three dimensional, industrial scale, and rotating drum granulator with gas–solid flows is assessed using the Eulerian–Eulerian approach coupled with the k-ε standard turbulence model. A Eulerian–Eulerian Two-Fluid Model (TFM) is used with the KTGF model for the granular phase. The sensitivities to different operating parameters, including the rotational speed (8, 16, and 24 rpm), inclination degree (3.57∘, 5.57∘, and 7.57∘), and degree of filling (20%, 30%, and 40%) are studied. Moreover, the impact of the drag model on the simulation accuracy is investigated. The flow behavior, regime transitions, and particle distribution are numerically evaluated, while varying the operating conditions and the drag models. The rotational speed and filling degree appear to have greater influences on the granulation effectiveness than on the inclination degree. Three drag models are retained in our analysis. Both the Gidaspow and Wen and Yu models successfully predict the two-phase flow in comparison to the Syamlal and O’Brien model, which seems to underestimate the hydrodynamics of the flow in both its axial and radial distributions (a fill level less than 35%). The methodology followed in the current work lays the first stone for the optimization of the phosphates fertilizer wet-granulation process within an industrial installation.

Improvement of bio-based polyurethane and its optimal application in controlled release fertilizer

In the past decades, polyurethane has emerged as a new material that has been widely developed and applied in coated controlled release fertilizers (CRFs). Particularly in recent years, the excessive consumption of petroleum resources and increasing demand for sustainable development have resulted in considerable interest in bio-based polyurethane coated controlled-release fertilizers. This review article focuses on the application and progress of environmentally friendly bio-based materials in the polyurethane-coated CRF industry. We also explore prospects for the green and sustainable development of coated CRFs. Using animal and plant oils, starch, lignin, and cellulose as raw materials, polyols can be produced by physical, chemical, and biological means to replace petroleum-based materials and polyurethane film coating for CRFs can be prepared. Various modifications can also improve the hydrophobicity and degradability of polyurethane film. A growing body of research on bio-based polyurethane has revealed its great potential in the production and application of coated CRFs. The purpose of this review is to highlight the practicality of bio-based materials in the application of polyurethane-coated CRFs and to clarify their current limitations.

A landscape review of controlled release urea products: Patent objective, formulation and technology

Fertiliser has been a vital part of agriculture due to it boosting crop productivity and preventing starvation throughout the world. Despite this huge contribution, the application of nitrogen (N) fertilisers results in N leaching and the formation of greenhouse gases, which threaten the environment and human health. To minimise the impacts, slow/controlled release fertilisers (S/CRFs) have been being developed since the beginning of the 20th century. Despite the efforts made over a century, the basic terminological and classification information of these fertilisers remains vague. The scientific knowledge published in S/CRF patents has also been overlooked since the beginning. This review focused on the information gaps, clarified the definitions, differentiation and classification methods that have been randomly used in previous literature. The objectives, formulations and technologies of 109 controlled release urea patents involving sulphur coated urea, polymer coated urea and urea matrix fertilisers published in the years since these products emerged were also reviewed to 1) highlight the overlooked scientific knowledge in the patents; 2) understand the evolutionary processes and current research states of the products; 3) clarify research preferences and challenges to date; 4) identify remaining gaps for the future direction. It is expected that the organised basic information and the patent knowledge highlighted in this paper can be new resources and foster the development of S/CRFs in the future.

Synthesis of an environmentally friendly binding material using pyrolysis by-products and modified starch binder for slow-release fertilizers

Biochar-based slow-release fertilizers (BSRFs) are vital for the development of eco-friendly and sustainable agriculture. Considerable attention has been given to enhancing the efficiency of fertilizers (EEFs) by appropriate modification or binding to reduce nutrient waste and improve the slow-release effect on the growth of plants. In this study, sustained binding materials were presented for BSRF synthesis, including pyroligneous acids (PA), bio-oil (BO), and modified starch binder (MSB). The results show that the release ratio of phosphorus from PA + BO+MSB was 4.7%, 15.2%, and 21.2% slower than that of PA, BO, and MSB alone, respectively. The BSRFs were characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, and EDS, and the release kinetic outcome revealed that PA + BO+MSB contributed to the formation of a satisfactory structure in the BSRFs. The MSB viscosity significantly influences the slow-release performance and accumulation of N, P, and K nutrients. Moreover, economic assessments showed that PA + BO+MSB exhibited the lowest cost.

Abandoned agriculture soil can be recultivated by promoting biological phosphorus fertility when amended with nano-rock phosphate and suitable bacterial inoculant

In semi-arid regions, post-restoration vegetation recovery on abandoned agricultural lands often fails due to inherently low organic matter content and poor soil fertility conditions, including phosphorus (P). As such, amending these soils with controlled release P fertilizer, especially with suitable P solubilizing bacteria (PSB) may promote plant growth and productivity by stimulating biological P fertility. To this aim, a pot study was performed to evaluate the agronomic potential of maize and soil biological P pools, using encapsulated (ENRP) and non-encapsulated (NRP) nano-rock phosphate as the P fertilizer source, on reclaimed agricultural soil in the presence and absence of PSB inoculant. The experiment was setup following a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with four replicates. Without PSB, NRP treatment showed marginal positive effects on plant growth, P nutrition and P use efficiency (PUE) compared to control treatment. Although larger gains with NRP treatment were more noticeable under PSB inoculation, ENRP was the most convenient slow-release P fertilizer, increasing plant growth, P nutrition and grain yield compared to all treatments. Importantly, PSB inoculation with ENRP resulted in significantly higher increase in soil CaCl2-P (8.91 mg P kg soil-1), citrate-P (26.98 mg P kg soil-1), enzyme-P (18.98 mg P kg soil-1), resin-P (11.41 mg P kg soil-1), and microbial-P (18.94 mg P kg soil-1), when compared to all treatment combinations. Although a decrease in soil HCl-P content was observed with both types of P fertilizer, significant differences were found only with PSB inoculation. A significant increase in soil biological P pools could be due to the higher specific area and crystalline structure of nano materials, providing increased number of active sites for PSB activity in the presence of biobased encapsulated shell. Furthermore, the increase in PSB abundance, higher root carboxylate secretions, and decreased rhizosphere pH in response to nano-structured P fertilizer, implies greater extension of rhizosphere promoting greater P mobilization and/or solubilization, particularly under PSB inoculated conditions. We conclude that cropping potential of abandoned agricultural lands can be enhanced by the use of nano-rock phosphate in combination with PSB inoculant, establishing a favorable micro-environment for higher plant growth and biochemical P fertility.

Characteristics and preparation of oil-coated fertilizers: A review

As the slow-release fertilizer, oil-coated fertilizer can not only slow down the nutrients loss, but also have outstanding advantages in controlling the nutrients release. Based on a large number of literature, this paper systematically investigated the composition, classification, properties and preparation of oil-coated fertilizers, summarizes the challenges faced by the oil-coated fertilizers and offers a few suggestions for the future research. Through literature research, some important conclusions were found: (1) Oil-coated fertilizers are generally composed of core fertilizers and coated oil layers, and some have active interlayers. (2) Vegetable oils has the characteristics of easy degradation, water resistance and impact resistance, and the nutrient release curves of vegetable oil coated fertilizer in soil and still water are "S" type. (3) The modified polyurethane exhibits good compatibility with urea, and can control the release of N in a long period of time, which is 30 days longer than the N release life of ordinary polyurethane-coated fertilizers. (4) Oil-coated fertilizers can reduce the loss of N by slowing down the hydrolysis rate of urea and the nitrification from NH₄⁺ to NO₃^-, which reduces the N₂O release by 70-80% compared to the uncoated fertilizers. Moreover, the paper also proposes a new preparation method of oil-coated material.

A review of advances over 20 years on polysaccharide-based polymers applied as enhanced efficiency fertilizers

Over the last 20 years, polysaccharide-based materials have garnered attention in the enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs) research. Biodegradability, non-toxicity, water-solubility, swellability, and ease of chemical modification make these polymers suitable for agricultural applications. In this review, the polysaccharides-based EEFs advances are summarized over the polymer and co-materials selection, the methods, and the chemical/structure aspects necessary for an appropriate production. We also briefly discuss terminologies, nutrient release mechanisms, biodegradation, and future trends. The most used polysaccharides are chitosan, starch, and alginate, and the non-Fickian model most describes the release mechanism. It is dependent on the relaxation of polymer chains by the matrix swelling followed by the nutrient diffusion. EEFs-polymers-based should be designed as more packed and less porous structures to avoid the immediate contact of the fertilizer with the surrounding water, improving fertilizer retention. Furthermore, the preparation methods will determine the scale-up of the material.
