Formulation of zeolite supported nano-metallic catalyst and applications in textile effluent treatment

An overview on the key advantages and limitations of batch and dynamic modes of biosorption of metal ions

Water purification using adsorption is a crucial process for maintaining human life and preserving the environment. Batch and dynamic adsorption modes are two types of water purification processes that are commonly used in various countries due to their simplicity and feasibility on an industrial scale. However, it is important to understand the advantages and limitations of these two adsorption modes in industrial applications. Also, the possibility of using batch mode in industrial scale was scrutinized, along with the necessity of using dynamic mode in such applications. In addition, the reasons for the necessity of performing batch adsorption studies before starting the treatment on an industrial scale were mentioned and discussed. In fact, this review article attempts to throw light on these subjects by comparing the biosorption efficiency of some metals on utilized biosorbents, using both batch and fixed-bed (column) adsorption modes. The comparison is based on the effectiveness of the two processes and the mechanisms involved in the treatment. Parameters such as biosorption capacity, percentage removal, and isotherm models for both batch and column (fixed bed) studies are compared. The article also explains thermodynamic and kinetic models for batch adsorption and discusses breakthrough evaluations in adsorptive column systems. The review highlights the benefits of using convenient batch-wise biosorption in lab-scale studies and the key advantages of column biosorption in industrial applications.

Recent Advances in Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron (nZVI)-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs): Applications, Mechanisms, and Future Prospects

The fast rise of organic pollution has posed severe health risks to human beings and toxic issues to ecosystems. Proper disposal toward these organic contaminants is significant to maintain a green and sustainable development. Among various techniques for environmental remediation, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can non-selectively oxidize and mineralize organic contaminants into CO2, H2O, and inorganic salts using free radicals that are generated from the activation of oxidants, such as persulfate, H2O2, O2, peracetic acid, periodate, percarbonate, etc., while the activation of oxidants using catalysts via Fenton-type reactions is crucial for the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), i.e., •OH, •SO4-, •O2-, •O3CCH3, •O2CCH3, •IO3, •CO3-, and 1O2. Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), with a core of Fe0 that performs a sustained activation effect in AOPs by gradually releasing ferrous ions, has been demonstrated as a cost-effective, high reactivity, easy recovery, easy recycling, and environmentally friendly heterogeneous catalyst of AOPs. The combination of nZVI and AOPs, providing an appropriate way for the complete degradation of organic pollutants via indiscriminate oxidation of ROS, is emerging as an important technique for environmental remediation and has received considerable attention in the last decade. The following review comprises a short survey of the most recent reports in the applications of nZVI participating AOPs, their mechanisms, and future prospects. It contains six sections, an introduction into the theme, applications of persulfate, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, and other oxidants-based AOPs catalyzed with nZVI, and conclusions about the reported research with perspectives for future developments. Elucidation of the applications and mechanisms of nZVI-based AOPs with various oxidants may not only pave the way to more affordable AOP protocols, but may also promote exploration and fabrication of more effective and sustainable nZVI materials applicable in practical applications.

Nanocomposites from spent coffee grounds and iron/zinc oxide: green synthesis, characterization, and application in textile wastewater treatment

This study reports on a novel composite of bimetallic FeO/ZnO nanoparticles supported by spent coffee grounds (SCGs). The leaves of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus Labill) and trumpet (Cuphea aequipetala Cav), with their high antioxidant content, serve as bio-reductant agents for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. It was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Stable nanoparticles were produced with different diameters of 5-30 nm, and they were applied as catalysts in Fenton-like processes. Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was used to determine the optimal removal efficiency with three factors and was used in the degradation of textile dyes from wastewater. The nanocomposite displayed a high decolorization ratio (88%) of indigo carmine in the presence of H2O2 combined. This resulted in a reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 56% at 120 min of contact time at an initial pH of 3.0 and a 0.5 g/L of catalyst dose, a H2O2 concentration of 8.8 mM/L, an initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L, and a temperature of 25 °C.

Aluminosilicates as a Double-Edged Sword: Adsorption of Aflatoxin B1 and Sequestration of Essential Trace Minerals in an In Vitro Gastrointestinal Poultry Model

Aflatoxins can cause intoxication and poisoning in animals and humans. Among these molecules, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most dangerous because of its carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. To mitigate these effects, clay adsorbents are commonly included in the diet of animals to adsorb the carcinogens and prevent their absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, four clays, three smectites (C-1, C-2, and C-3), and one zeolite (C-4), were compared as adsorbents of AFB1 and trace inorganic nutrients using an in vitro gastrointestinal model for poultry. Characterization of the clays using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed characteristic bands of smectites in C-1, C-2, and C-3 (stretching vibrations of Si-O, Al-O-Si, and Si-O-Si). The C-4 presented bands related to the bending vibration of structural units (Si-O-Si and Al-O-Si). X-ray diffraction analysis showed that C-1 is a montmorillonite, C-2 is a beidellite, C-3 is a beidellite-Ca-montmorillonite, and C-4 is a clinoptilolite. The elemental compositions of the clays showed alumina, silica, iron, calcium, and sodium contents. The cation exchange capacity was higher in C-3 clay (60.2 cmol(+)/kg) in contrast with the other clays. The AFB1 adsorption of C-1 was the highest (98%; p ˂ 0.001), followed by C-2 (94%). However, all the clays also sequestered trace inorganic nutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn, and Se). Both smectites, montmorillonite and beidellite, were the most suitable for use as adsorbents of AFB1.

Facile synthesis and physicochemical characterization of κ-Carrageenan-silver-bentonite based nanocatalytic platform for efficient degradation of anionic azo dyes

Water pollution due to textile industry effluents is a global concern that warrants versatile research solutions for degrading them, and for a sustainable environment. In the present work, by using the imperative role of nanotechnology, a facile one-pot synthesis has been devised to generate κ-carrageenan capped silver nanocatalyst (CSNC), and was immobilized on 2D bentonite (BT) sheets to generate nanocatalytic platform (BTCSNC) for the degradation of anionic azo dyes. The nanocomposite(s) were physicochemically characterized using UV-Vis, DLS, TEM, FESEM, PXRD, ATR-FTIR, TGA, BET and XPS etc., to obtain insights into the nanocomposite composition, structure, stability, morphology and mechanism of interaction. The obtained CNSC are monodispersed, spherical with a size of 4 ± 2 nm, and were stabilized by the functional groups (-OH, COO‾, and SO3‾) of κ-Crg. The broadening of peak corresponding to basal plane (001) of BT montmorillonite in PXRD spectra established its exfoliation upon addition of CSNC. XPS and ATR-FTIR data evidenced the absence of covalent interactions between CSNC and BT. The catalytic efficiency of CSNC and BTCSNC composites were compared for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and congo red (CR). The reaction followed a pseudo first order kinetics, and immobilization of CSNC on BT resulted in a 3-4 fold enhancement in degradation rates. The rates achieved for the degradation kinetics are: MO degradation within 14 s (Ka 9.86 ± 2.00 min-1), and CR degradation within 120 s (Ka of 1.24 ± 0.13 min-1). Further, a degradation mechanism has been proposed by analyzing the products identified through LC-MS. The reusability studies of the BTCSNC evidenced the complete activity of the nanocatalytic platform for six cycles, and gravitational separation method for catalyst recycling. In a nutshell, the current study provided an environmentally friendly, sizable, and sustainable nano catalytic platform" for the remediation of industrial wastewater contaminated with hazardous azo dyes".

Degradation of formaldehyde by photo-Fenton process over n-ZVI/TiO2 catalyst

The degradation of formaldehyde in a photo-Fenton reaction was studied using n-ZVI/TiO2 as the catalyst. The effects of %n-ZVI loading, catalyst dosage, H2O2, and pH on formaldehyde degradation were studied. The n-ZVI/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation with chemical reduction, and their catalytic activity was evaluated in a batch reactor under UVC light. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to determine that the n-ZVI nanoparticle size was 39.41 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study the oxidation states of 2%n‑ZVI/TiO2, and the Fe 2p spectrum of 2%n-ZVI/TiO2 indicated the presence of Fe0. The optimal conditions for the complete removal of formaldehyde within 30 min were an n-ZVI loading of 2 wt.%, a catalyst dosage of 0.5 g/L, 30 mM H2O2, and an initial pH of 3. After the reaction, the C-H functional group of formaldehyde was not observed due to the •OH radicals generated by Fe0 and H2O2 attacking the formaldehyde molecule. Moreover, no Fe leaching was observed, presenting an advantage compared with homogeneous Fe catalysts. Therefore, 2%n‑ZVI/TiO2 shows excellent potential as a photo-Fenton catalyst for the environmentally friendly degradation of formaldehyde.

The performance and mechanism of iron-mediated chemical oxidation: Advances in hydrogen peroxide, persulfate and percarbonate oxidation

Many studies have successfully built iron-mediated materials to activate or catalyze Fenton-like reactions, with applications in water and wastewater treatment being investigated. However, the developed materials are rarely compared with each other regarding their performance of organic contaminant removal. In this review, the recent advances of Fenton-like processes in homogeneous and heterogeneous ways are summarized, especially the performance and mechanism of activators including ferrous iron, zero valent iron, iron oxides, iron-loaded carbon, zeolite, and metal organic framework materials. Also, this work mainly compares three O-O bond containing oxidants including hydrogen dioxide, persulfate, and percarbonate, which are environmental-friendly oxidants and feasible for in-situ chemical oxidation. The influence of reaction conditions, catalyst properties and benefits are analyzed and compared. In addition, the challenges and strategies of these oxidants in applications and the major mechanisms of the oxidation process have been discussed. This work can help understand the mechanistic insights of variable Fenton-like reactions, the role of emerging iron-based materials, and provide guidance for choosing appropriate technologies when facing real-world water and wastewater applications.

Polyethylene glycol-modified mesoporous zerovalent iron nanoparticle as potential catalyst for improved reductive degradation of Congo red from wastewater

In this study, bare zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) have been modified using polyethylene glycol (PEG) of various molecular weight in a facile technique. The synthesized nZVI modified with PEG, M.W. of 600 and 6000 was denoted by nZVI-PEG₆₀₀ and nZVI-PEG₆₀₀₀, respectively, and compared their catalytic activity towards the reductive degradation of Congo red (CR) using NaBH₄.The existence of PEG layer surrounds the nZVI core was confirmed by several characterization tools, such as XRD, FTIR, FESEM and TEM. Herein, both nZVI-PEG₆₀₀ and nZVI-PEG₆₀₀₀ exhibited remarkable removal efficiencies of 89.6% and 99.2% within 14 min of reaction time. The optimum reaction parameters were found to be as follows: 0.2 g L^-1 catalyst dose and initial dye concentration of 2 × 10^-5 molL^-1 etc. Kinetic studies of dye degradation were investigated which follow pseudo-1^st-order kinetics. The TOC analysis confirmed the complete mineralization of CR dye by nZVI-PEG₆₀₀₀ nanocatalyst. GCMS analysis of plausible degraded products was performed to elucidate a probable mechanistic pathway of CR degradation. Further, we have investigated the degradation of two anionic dyes mixture, i.e., CR and methyl orange (MO) using best catalyst, i.e., nZVI-PEG₆₀₀₀.

Silver Nanoparticles for Waste Water Management

Rapidly increasing industrialisation has human needs, but the consequences have added to the environmental harm. The pollution caused by several industries, including the dye industries, generates a large volume of wastewater containing dyes and hazardous chemicals that drains industrial effluents. The growing demand for readily available water, as well as the problem of polluted organic waste in reservoirs and streams, is a critical challenge for proper and sustainable development. Remediation has resulted in the need for an appropriate alternative to clear up the implications. Nanotechnology is an efficient and effective path to improve wastewater treatment/remediation. The effective surface properties and chemical activity of nanoparticles give them a better chance to remove or degrade the dye material from wastewater treatment. AgNPs (silver nanoparticles) are an efficient nanoparticle for the treatment of dye effluent that have been explored in many studies. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs against several pathogens is well-recognised in the health and agriculture sectors. This review article summarises the applications of nanosilver-based particles in the dye removal/degradation process, effective water management strategies, and the field of agriculture.

Formation of Ag-Fe Bimetallic Nano-Species on Mordenite Depending on the Initial Ratio of Components

The formation and properties of silver and iron nanoscale components in the Ag-Fe bimetallic system deposited on mordenite depend on several parameters during their preparation. Previously, it was shown that an important condition for optimizing nano-center properties in a bimetallic catalyst is to change the order of sequential deposition of components; the order "first Ag⁺, then Fe²⁺" was chosen as optimal. In this work, the influence of exact Ag/Fe atomic proportion on the system's physicochemical properties was studied. This ratio has been confirmed to affect the stoichiometry of the reduction-oxidation processes involving Ag⁺ and Fe²⁺, as shown by XRD, DR UV-Vis, XPS, and XAFS data, while HRTEM, S_BET and TPD-NH₃ show little change. However, it was found the correlation between the occurrence and amount of the Fe³⁺ ions incorporated into the zeolite's framework and the experimentally determined catalytic activities towards the model de-NOx reaction along the series of nanomaterials elucidated in this present paper.

Recent advances in the construction of biocomposites based on fungal mycelia

In recent years, environmental problems have become increasingly serious, significantly effecting the ecosystem and human health. To deal with the problem of environmental pollution in an eco-conscious way, sustainable composite biomaterials are being produced. Mycelium-based composite biomaterials combine biological systems with substrates such as nanomaterials or agricultural and industrial wastes, which can complement each other's advantages or turn waste into a useful resource. Such materials can solve practical wastewater problems as well as replace plastic products, thus reducing plastic pollution and contributing to the green transition of the environment. In this review, we summarized the recent findings of studies on these materials, indicating future research directions.

Adsorption and Degradation of Volatile Organic Compounds by Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs): A Review

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a major threat to human life and health. The technologies currently used to remove VOCs mainly include adsorption and photocatalysis. Adsorption is the most straightforward strategy, but it cannot ultimately eliminate VOCs. Due to the limited binding surface, the formaldehyde adsorption on conventional photocatalysts is limited, and the photocatalytic degradation efficiency is not high enough. By developing novel metal-organic framework (MOF) materials that can catalytically degrade VOCs at room temperature, the organic combination of new MOF materials and traditional purification equipment can be achieved to optimize adsorption and degradation performance. In the present review, based on the research on the adsorption and removal of VOCs by MOF materials in the past 10 years, starting from the structure and characteristics of MOFs, the classification of which was described in detail, the influencing factors and mechanisms in the process of adsorption and removal of VOCs were summarized. In addition, the research progress of MOF materials was summarized, and its future development in this field was prospected.

Adsorption of levofloxacin on natural zeolite: effects of ammonia nitrogen and humic acid

The persistence of antibiotics in sewage treatment plants in recent years has become a serious problem. Meanwhile, humic acid and ammonia nitrogen are widely distributed in natural reservoirs and might influence the sorption, migration and transformation of antibiotics. In this study, natural zeolite (NZ) was evaluated as an adsorbent for the removal of levofloxacin (LEV). The physical and chemical properties of NZ before and after adsorption were characterized by various analytical techniques to develop the mechanism. The effects of ammonia nitrogen and humic acid (HA) on the interfacial behavior of LEV on NZ were explored. Comparative experiments revealed that LEV adsorption on NZ involved electrostatic interactions and ion exchange, and the adsorption processes were well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudosecond-order kinetic model. The maximum experimental adsorption capacity of LEV was 22.17 mg·g^-1 at pH 6.5. The presence of ammonia nitrogen and HA significantly suppressed the adsorption of LEV due to competitive adsorption, and the adsorption capacity decreased 58 and 46%, respectively. It is obvious that low concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and HA are conducive to improving the treatment effect of sewage. This study demonstrates that NZ is a promising and efficient material for LEV adsorption.

Comparative performance of Scirpus grossus for phytotreating mixed dye wastewater in batch and continuous pilot subsurface constructed wetland systems

Dye is one of the pollutants found in water bodies because of the increased growth of the textile industry. In this study, Scirpus grossus was planted inside a constructed wetland to treat mixed dye (methylene blue and methyl orange)-containing wastewater under batch and continuous modes. The plants were exposed to various concentrations (0, 50, 75, and 100 mg/L) of mixed dye for 72 days (with hydraulic retention time of 7 days for the continuous system). Biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, pH, temperature, ionic content, and plant growth parameters were measured. Results showed that S. grossus can withstand all the tested dye concentrations until the end of the treatment period. Color removal efficiencies of 86, 84, and 75% were obtained in batch mode, whereas 90%, 85%, and 79% were obtained in continuous mode for 50, 75, and 100 mg/L dye concentrations, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared analysis confirmed the transformation of dye compounds after treatment and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis showed that most of the intermediate compounds were not absorbed into plants but adsorbed onto the surface of the root structure.

Impact of effluent of Pulp & Paper industry on the flora of river basin at Jaykaypur, Odisha, India and its ecological implications

The JK Paper industry located at Rayagada discharges biologically untreated effluent more than the permissible limit prescribed by Pollution Control Board, Odisha in to the environment. The industry is seriously polluting the surrounding aquatic and terrestrial environment. No detailed intensive study was carried out by previous workers on this industry earlier. The present study aims at finding out the impact of effluent on the flora at the contaminated site. The chemically treated effluent (TE) contained significant amount of mercury and cadmium. The TE has high BOD, COD, dissolved solids and suspended solids when compared to normal river water at the site of discharge. The TE deteriorated the natural water bodies changing the physico-chemical properties of natural river water. After meeting the river water the TE was diluted after 1 km distance from the meeting point of the river. Crop plants collected from the contaminated site showed higher level of residual Hg and Cd and significant depletion in pigment was observed. Plants collected from both the sides of the treated effluent canal showed significant amount residue mercury and cadmium in the plant leaves. The plants exposed to the TE, showed variation in chlorophyll and Phaeophytin pigment content when compared to their respective control values in all terrestrial plants collected from the contaminated site. In some plant leaves little increment in the pigment level was noted but the values were not significant. The changes observed in the plant pigment might be due to heavy metal accumulation. The presence of residual Hg and Cd in crop plants and plant leaves grazed by grazing animals after absorption, accumulation and enrichment may lead to a possible biological magnification, warrants attention. Proper biological treatment, treatment of effluent by modern methods and removal of heavy metals from the effluent before discharge by the industry is suggested.

Unified, simple and decentralized treatment process for synthetic and real-time dye contaminated wastewaters

The aim of this study is to develop a simple, economical and effective treatment scheme to treat effluents from small scale textile dyeing units and tanneries, which have been set up in rural areas. The physicochemical properties of real time effluents procured from these industries were analysed. The workflow required for treating these effluents were ascertained by preliminary tests carried out on synthetically created solutions. A novel treatment scheme for tannery and textile dye effluents sludge volume reduction by the use of sodium hypochlorite was identified. Effective methods for the safe disposal and recycling of all the by-products generated from different steps were discussed. The proposed scheme was successfully able to decolourize and detoxify both the tannery and textile dyeing effluent with over 90% removal of both COD and BOD. The impacts of the treatment scheme on 14 different effluent parameters were reported. The methodology developed in this study may be utilized to construct simple localized treatment units for handling effluents in isolated rural areas. This preliminary treatment at the source, will help in the reduction of the load on the local treatment plants and prevent their choking.

Advanced catalytic ozonation for degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants-A review

Various chemical treatment techniques are involved in removing refractory organic compounds from water and wastewater using the oxidation reaction of hydroxyl radicals (^•OH). The use of catalysts in advanced catalytic ozonation is likely to improve the decomposition of molecular ozone to generate highly active free radicals that facilitate the rapid and efficient mineralization and degradation of numerous organics. For the degradation of toxic organic pollutants in wastewater, the advanced catalytic ozonation process has been widely applied in recent years. Low utilization efficiency of ozone and ineffective mineralization of organic contaminants by ozone can be remedied with advanced catalytic ozonation. Advanced catalytic ozonation has gained popularity because of these merits. However, homogeneous catalytic ozonation has the disadvantage of producing secondary contaminants from the addition of metallic ions. Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation can overcome this drawback by utilizing metals, metallic oxides, and carbon materials as a catalyst of efficacy and stability. This review discusses various aspects of catalytic ozonation in wastewater treatment of pharmaceutical pollutants, application of catalytic ozonation process in typical wastewater, and prospects in advancing the techniques in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation.

Hydroxyapatite-based adsorbents: Applications in sequestering heavy metals and dyes

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a calcium phosphate material that was used primarily in bone regeneration and repair as a result of its chemical similarity with bone. However, HAp has emerged as a very promising adsorbent for sequestering contaminants like heavy metals, dyes, hydrocarbons as well as other emerging pollutants from wastewater as a result of its versatility and encouraging adsorptive properties. Contaminants like heavy metals and dyes have been a major source of environmental concern. Research studies involving the use of HAp as adsorbents for the adsorptive treatment of heavy metal- and dye-contaminated wastewater have become increasingly popular due to its eco-friendliness, easy synthesis, unique adsorption properties etc. Various methods are available for the synthesis of HAp and its composites with some of these methods used in combination with other methods to obtain more efficient HAp-based adsorbents. In this work, the adsorptive removal of heavy metals and dyes by HAp and its composites was extensively reviewed as well as the parametric effects of process factors like contact time, solution pH, temperature, solute concentration etc on the adsorption process. Kinetic, thermodynamic, and isotherm models for elucidating the adsorption process were also considered. Generally, from the works reviewed, HAp-based adsorbents were found to be very effective for sequestering heavy metals and dyes from solution and thus presents a low-cost option for adsorptive wastewater treatment.

Superior elimination of Cr(VI) using polydopamine functionalized attapulgite supported nZVI composite: Behavior and mechanism

In this study, a polydopamine (PDA) modified attapulgite (ATP) supported nano sized zero-valent iron (nZVI) composite (PDA/ATP-nZVI) was rapidly synthesized under acidic conditions, and employed to alleviate Cr(VI) toxicity from an aqueous solution. Kinetic studies revealed that Cr(VI) adsorption process followed the pseudo-second order model, suggesting chemisorption was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Liu isotherm adsorption model was able to better describe the Cr(VI) adsorption isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity of 134.05 mg/g. The thermodynamic study demonstrated that the adsorption process occurred spontaneously, accompanied by the increase in entropy and endothermic reaction. Low concentrations of coexisting ions had negligible effects on the removal of Cr(VI), while high concentrations of interfering ions were able to facilitate the removal of Cr(VI). Reactive species test revealed that Fe²⁺ played a key role in Cr(VI) reduction by PDA/ATP-nZVI. PDA enhanced the elimination of Cr(VI) via donation of electrons to Cr(VI) and acceleration of Fe³⁺ transformation to Fe²⁺. Furthermore, PDA was able to effectively inhibit the leaching of iron species and generation of ferric hydroxide sludge. Mechanistic study revealed that 72% of Cr(VI) elimination was attributed to reduction/precipitation, while 28% of Cr(VI) elimination was due to the surface adsorption.

Insights into the Kinetics Degradation of Bisphenol A by Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation with Metals Supported onto Carbon Nanospheres

Emerging pollutants are an increasing problem in wastewater globally. Bisphenol A (BPA) is one compound belonging to this group. This work proposes the study of the employment of several metal-supported (2 wt. %) carbon nanospheres (CNS) for BPA degradation by catalytic wet-air oxidation. Several techniques were used for the catalyst characterization: thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR), determination of isoelectric point, elemental analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. Different loads of Ru in the catalyst were also tested for BPA degradation (1, 2, 5, 7, and 10%), being the first minimum value to achieve a conversion above 97% in 90 min 2 wt. % of Ru in the CNS-Ru catalyst. In the stability test with CNS-Ru and CNS-Pt, CNS-Pt demonstrated less activity and stability. Two potential models were proposed to adjust experimental data with CNS-Ru(2%) at different conditions of BPA initial concentration, catalyst mass, temperature, and pressure of the reaction. Both models showed a high determination coefficient (R2 > 0.98). Finally, the efficiency of CNS-Ru and CNS-Pt was tested in a real hospital wastewater matrix obtaining better results the CNS-Pt(2%) catalyst.

In-depth research on percarbonate expediting zero-valent iron corrosion for conditioning anaerobically digested sludge

Anaerobically digested sludge (ADS) is commonly hard to dewater for the presence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the liberation of glutinous soluble microbic products during anaerobic digestion. Sodium percarbonate (SPC) expediting zero-valent iron (ZVI) corrosion (SPC/ZVI) process firstly conditioned ADS to amend its dewaterability. Results showed that SPC/ZVI conditioning decreased moisture content of dewatered cake from 90.5% (control) to 69.9% with addition of 0.10 g/g TS SPC and 0.20 g/g TS ZVI. Mechanistic research indicated that the enhanced ADS dewaterability mainly resulted from •OH and Fe(III)/iron polymers yielded in SPC/ZVI. •OH disrupted EPS, damaged cytoderm & cytomembrane, and lysed intracellular substances, unbinding the bound water. Meanwhile, the breakage and inactivation of microbe by •OH prompted the production of macro-pores in ADS. •OH adjusted the conformation of extracellular/intracellular proteins by intervening in the H-bonds and S-S bonds, availing the hydrophobicity and slight flocculation of ADS. •OH further facilitated the despiralization of α-helical to β-sheet structure in ADS pellets, benefiting cell-to-cell aggregation. Additionally, Fe(III)/iron polymers from ZVI corrosion accelerated to gather ADS and maintained its floc structure. Consequently, SPC/ZVI conditioning not only adjusted the natures of ADS and its EPS but also the features of residual pellets, which further induced the advancement of ADS dewaterability. In addition, SPC/ZVI conditioning possibly surmounts some limitations existing in ZVI/Peroxide or ZVI/Persulfate technique.

Functional chitosan/glycidyl methacrylate-based cryogels for efficient removal of cationic and anionic dyes and antibacterial applications

In this study, we constructed a novel family of chitosan-based cryogels with antibacterial activity to treat different types of dye wastewater. Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) cross-linked chitosan (CS) cryogels functionalized with negatively and positively molecules were prepared via thermo-crosslinking and freeze-drying methods. These chitosan-based cryogels present a well-defined three-dimensional microporous network structure with ultra-light and high porosity, and have high water absorption ability. For CS/GMA/SMA cryogels, 71.20% of Cationic Yellow X-8GL (CY) can be removed, and the process kinetics well corresponded to the Pseudo-second order model and Freundlich model. The quantity and percent of Reactive Yellow B-4RFN (RY) removal by CS/GMA/DMC cryogel reached at 224.6 mg/g and 96.11%, which closely fitted the Pseudo-second order model and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm. Furthermore, the chitosan-based cryogels showed antibacterial efficacies against E. coli and S. aureus. The prepared chitosan-based cryogels with adsorption and antibacterial properties have great potential for the remediation of dyeing wastewater.

Occurrence, potential ecological risks, and degradation of endocrine disrupter, nonylphenol, from the aqueous environment

Nonylphenol (NP) is considered a potential endocrine-disrupting chemical affecting humans and the environment. Due to widespread occurrence in the aquatic environment and neuro-, immuno, reproductive, and estrogenic effects, nonylphenol calls for considerable attention from the scientific community, researchers, government officials, and the public. It can persist in the environment, especially soil, for a long duration because of its high hydrophobic nature. Nonylphenol is incorporated into the water matrices via agricultural run-off, wastewater effluents, agricultural sources, and groundwater leakage from the soil. In this regard, assessment of the source, fate, toxic effect, and removal of nonylphenol seems a high-priority concern. Remediation of nonylphenol is possible through physicochemical and microbial methods. Microbial methods are widely used due to ecofriendly in nature. The microbial strains of the genera, Sphingomonas, Sphingobium, Pseudomonas, Pseudoxanthomonas, Thauera, Novosphingonium, Bacillus, Stenotrophomonas, Clostridium, Arthrobacter, Acidovorax, Maricurvus, Rhizobium, Corynebacterium, Rhodococcus, Burkholderia, Acinetobacter, Aspergillus, Pleurotus, Trametes, Clavariopsis, Candida, Phanerochaete, Bjerkandera, Mucor, Fusarium and Metarhizium have been reported for their potential role in the degradation of NP via its metabolic pathway. This study outlines the recent information on the occurrence, origin, and potential ecological and human-related risks of nonylphenol. The current development in the removal of nonylphenol from the environment using different methods is discussed. Despite the significant importance of nonylphenol and its effects on the environment, the number of studies in this area is limited. This review gives an in-depth understanding of NP occurrence, fate, toxicity, and remediation from the environments.

Adsorption behavior of Cd (II) on TEMPO-oxidized cellulose in inorganic/ organic complex systems

2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) was oxidized to produce TEMPO-oxidized cellulose (TOCS) with a nanofunctionalized surface and abundant carboxyl groups. In a batch experiment, three pH values (2, 5 and 7), three modes (single, binary and multiple systems), and systems with inorganic and organic materials were applied to explore the adsorption of coexisting metals and antibiotics on TOCS. The adsorption capacity of TOCS was substantially influenced by these factors, and the adsorption behaviors were also different in these systems. In general, the coordination behaviors and electrostatic attraction between Cd(II) and carboxyl groups were identified as the mechanism employed by the single system, while hydrophobic interactions, π interactions, hydrogen bonding and pore filling contributed to the adsorption of sulfonamides (SAs) on TOCS in the binary system. The bridging effect was determined to be the key mechanism; i.e., most Cd(II) and SAs in the form of [SA-Cd] complexes interacted with carboxyl groups, especially in the presence of high concentrations of Cd(II) and SAs. These adsorption behaviors were determined quantitatively by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, TOCS showed excellent adsorption capacity in a more complex interference system, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 5.83 mg/g.

Simultaneous removal of ammonium nitrogen, dissolved chemical oxygen demand and color from sanitary landfill leachate using natural zeolite

In this study, natural zeolite with maximum adsorption capacity of 3.59 mg g^-1 was used for the simultaneous removal of ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N), dissolved chemical oxygen demand (d-COD) and color from raw sanitary landfill leachate (SLL). Saturation, desorption and regeneration tests of zeolite were performed. Optimum adsorption conditions were found for particle size 0.930 µm, stirring rate of 1.18 m s^-1, zeolite dosage of 133 g L^-1 and pH 8. NH₄⁺-N removal efficiency reached 51.63 ± 0.80% within 2.5 min of contact. NH₄⁺-N adsorption follows mostly the linear pseudo-second order model, with intra-particle diffusion. NH₄⁺-N desorption follows the linear pseudo-second order model. Adsorption data fitted to the Temkin Isotherm in linear and nonlinear forms. Saturation tests showed that zeolite can be efficiently used in three successive adsorption cycles. NH₄⁺-N release from the saturated zeolite was not completely reversible, suggesting that the zeolite may be used as slow ΝΗ₄⁺-Ν releasing fertilizer and an attractive low cost material for the treatment of SLL. NH₄⁺-N removal with the regenerated zeolite exceeded 40% of the initial concentration in the fluid within 2.5 min. SEM analysis showed significant changes through saturation and regeneration. XPS revealed that adsorption of ΝΗ₄⁺-Ν to the zeolite was accompanied by ion exchange.

Distribution behavior and risk assessment of emerging perfluoroalkyl acids in multiple environmental media at Luoma Lake, East China

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are ubiquitous in various environments. This has caused great public concern, particularly in the shallow freshwater lake region, where the lake, rivers, and estuaries form a highly interconnected continuum. However, little is known about the environmental behaviors of PFAAs in the continuum. For the first time, a high-resolution monitoring framework covering the river-estuary-lake continuum of Luoma Lake was built, and the concentrations, sources, and environmental fates of PFAAs were identified and analyzed. The results revealed that the total concentration of PFAAs was at a moderate level in the water and at a high level in the sediment compared to global levels respectively. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was the most abundant PFAA in the continuum. In particular, the ∑PFAA concentration in the particle phase was much higher than that in the sediment phase. Distinct spatial heterogeneities were observed in the behaviors of distribution and the multiphase fate of PFAAs in the continuum, mainly driven by the turbulent mixing during transport, dilution of lake water, and spatial differences of hydrodynamic features and sedimentary properties among the sub-regions. Interestingly, the pH of the sediment and water had significant effects on the water-sediment portioning of PFAAs in contrasting ways. Furthermore, based on the composition of the sediments, four possible migration paths for PFAAs were deduced and the main sources of PFAAs were identified as sewage, domestic, and industrial effluents using the positive matrix factorization model. During the human health assessment, no risk was found under the median exposure scenario; however, under the high exposure scenario, PFAAs posed uncertain risks to human health, which cannot be ignored. This study provides basic information for simulating the fate and transport of PFAAs in the continuum and is significant for developing cost-effective control and remediation strategies in the near future.

Removal of micropollutants from municipal wastewater using different types of activated carbons

The water reservoirs are getting polluted due to increasing amounts of micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals, organic polymers and suspended solids. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) has been proved to be a promising solution for the purification of water without having harmful impacts on the environment. Parameters such as PAC dosing, wastewater hardness, the effect of coagulant and flocculant were evaluated in a batch scale study. These parameters were further applied on a pilot plant scale for the performance evaluation of PAC based removal of micropollutants concerning the contact time and PAC dosing with main focus on recirculation of PAC sludge. The obtained optimum dose was 10-20 mg/L providing 84.40-91.30% removal efficiency of suspended solid micropollutants (MPs) and this efficiency increased to 88.90-93.00% along with coagulant which further raised by the addition of polymer and recirculation process at batch scale. On pilot plant scale, the concentration in contact reactor and PAC removal effectiveness of dissolved air flotation, lamella separator and sedimentation tank were compared. Constant optimisation resulted in a concentration ranging from 2.70 to 3.40 g/L at dosing of PAC 10 mg/L, coagulant 2.00 mg/L and polymer 0.50 mg/L. PAC doses of 10-20 mg/L with 15-30 min contact time proved best for above 70-80% elimination. The recirculation system has also proved an efficient technique because the PAC's adsorption capacity was practically completely used. Small PAC dosages yielded high micropollutants elimination.

Characteristics and Behavior of Different Catalysts Used for Water Decontamination in Photooxidation and Ozonation Processes

The objective of this study was to summarize the results obtained in a wide research project carried out for more than 15 years on the catalytic activity of different catalysts (activated carbon, metal–carbon xerogels/aerogels, iron-doped silica xerogels, ruthenium metal complexes, reduced graphene oxide-metal oxide composites, and zeolites) in the photooxidation (by using UV or solar radiation) and ozonation of water pollutants, including herbicides, naphthalenesulfonic acids, sodium para-chlorobenzoate, nitroimidazoles, tetracyclines, parabens, sulfamethazine, sodium diatrizoate, cytarabine, and surfactants. All catalysts were synthesized and then texturally, chemically, and electronically characterized using numerous experimental techniques, including N2 and CO2 adsorption, mercury porosimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance UV–vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The behavior of these materials as photocatalysts and ozonation catalysts was related to their characteristics, and the catalytic mechanisms in these advanced oxidation processes were explored. Investigations were conducted into the effects on pollutant degradation, total organic carbon reduction, and water toxicity of operational variables and the presence of different chemical species in ultrapure, surface, ground, and wastewaters. Finally, a review is provided of the most recent and relevant published studies on photocatalysis and catalyzed ozonation in water treatments using similar catalysts to those examined in our project.
