A layer-by-layer sensing architecture based on dendrimer and ionic liquid supported reduced graphene oxide for simultaneous hollow-fiber solid phase microextraction and electrochemical determination of anti-cancer drug imatinib in biological samples

A novel ratiometric electrochemical sensing platform combined with molecularly imprinted polymer and Fe-MOF-NH2/CNTs-NH2/MXene composite for efficient detection of ofloxacin

BACKGROUND

Ofloxacin (OFL) is often abused in medicine and animal husbandry, which poses a great threat to human health and ecological environment. Therefore, it is necessary to establish efficient method to detect OFL. Electrochemical sensor has attracted widespread attention due to the advantages of low cost and fast response. However, most electrochemical sensors usually use one response signal to detect the target, which makes it sensitive to the variable background noise in the complex environment, resulting in low robustness and selectivity. The ratio detection mode and employing molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) are two strategies to solve these problems.

RESULTS

A novel molecular imprinting polymer-ratiometric electrochemical sensor (MIP-RECS) based on Fe-MOF-NH2/CNTs-NH2/MXene composite was prepared for the rapid and sensitive detection of OFL. The positively charged Fe-MOF-NH2 and CNTs-NH2 as interlayer spacers were introduced into the negatively charged MXene through a simple electrostatic self-assembly technique, which effectively prevented the agglomeration of MXene and increased the electrocatalytic activity. A glass carbon electrode was modified by the composite and a MIP film was electropolymerized on it using o-phenylenediamine and β-cyclodextrin as bifunctional monomers and OFL as template. Then a MIP-RECS was designed by adding dopamine (DA) into the electrolyte solution as internal reference, and OFL was quantified by the response current ratio of OFL to DA. The current ratio and the concentration of OFL displayed a satisfying linear relationship in the range of 0.1 μM-100 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 13.2 nM.

SIGNIFICANCE

Combining molecular imprinting strategy and ratio strategy, the MIP-RECS has impressive selectivity compared with the non-imprinted polymer-RECS, and has better repeatability and reproducibility than non-ratiometric sensor. The MIP-RECS has high sensitivity and accuracy, which was applied for the detection of OFL in four different brands of milk and was verified by HPLC method with satisfactory results.

Nanoparticle Assisted Fabric Phase Sorptive Extraction for Azo Dye Determination in the Industrial Sewage

Currently, one of the significant environmental problems is the presence of azo dye materials in water sources. In this study, for the first time, a fast and sensitive sample preparation approach using nanoparticle-assisted fabric phase sorptive extraction (NFPSE) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography was examined to remove some azo dyes such as methyl red and sunset yellow from aqueous solutions. Primarily, the significance of several parameters affecting NFPSE, such as fabric type, the kind of sorbent, the number of contacts with sol-gel and the time of contact, was investigated. In addition, experiments were performed to determine the effect of different adsorption parameters, such as sample volume, adsorption time, adsorbent value, desorption time, ionic strength and pH. It was found that the calibration curve was linear within two ranges of concentrations (0.05-0.1 and 0.5-15 ng/L for methyl red; 0.05-0.5 and 0.5-15 ng/L for sunset yellow) with correlation coefficients better than 0.9683. The limit of detection was 0.014 ng/L for methyl red and 0.015 ng/L for sunset yellow. Repeatability Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) with three replicated experiments was 1.5-10% for methyl red and 2.5-5.8% for sunset yellow. Relative recovery percentages of 88-96% for methyl red and 62-92% for sunset yellow were obtained in the samples. Moreover, the results have shown that acceptable accuracy, precision and linearity make the "fabric phase sorptive extraction" a proper method for the determination of dyes from industrial sewage samples.

Electrochemistry as a Powerful Tool for Investigations of Antineoplastic Agents: A Comprehensive Review

Cancer is most frequently treated with antineoplastic agents (ANAs) that are hazardous to patients undergoing chemotherapy and the healthcare workers who handle ANAs in the course of their duties. All aspects related to hazardous oncological drugs illustrate that the monitoring of ANAs is essential to minimize the risks associated with these drugs. Among all analytical techniques used to test ANAs, electrochemistry holds an important position. This review, for the first time, comprehensively describes the progress done in electrochemistry of ANAs by means of a variety of bare or modified (bio)sensors over the last four decades (in the period of 1982-2021). Attention is paid not only to the development of electrochemical sensing protocols of ANAs in various biological, environmental, and pharmaceutical matrices but also to achievements of electrochemical techniques in the examination of the interactions of ANAs with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), carcinogenic cells, biomimetic membranes, peptides, and enzymes. Other aspects, including the enantiopurity studies, differentiation between single-stranded and double-stranded DNA without using any label or tag, studies on ANAs degradation, and their pharmacokinetics, by means of electrochemical techniques are also commented. Finally, concluding remarks that underline the existence of a significant niche for the basic electrochemical research that should be filled in the future are presented.

Pretreatment and analysis techniques development of TKIs in biological samples for pharmacokinetic studies and therapeutic drug monitoring

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have emerged as the first-line small molecule drugs in many cancer therapies, exerting their effects by impeding aberrant cell growth and proliferation through the modulation of tyrosine kinase-mediated signaling pathways. However, there exists a substantial inter-individual variability in the concentrations of certain TKIs and their metabolites, which may render patients with compromised immune function susceptible to diverse infections despite receiving theoretically efficacious anticancer treatments, alongside other potential side effects or adverse reactions. Therefore, an urgent need exists for an up-to-date review concerning the biological matrices relevant to bioanalysis and the sampling methods, clinical pharmacokinetics, and therapeutic drug monitoring of different TKIs. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in pretreatment methods, such as protein precipitation (PPT), liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), solid-phase extraction (SPE), micro-SPE (μ-SPE), magnetic SPE (MSPE), and vortex-assisted dispersive SPE (VA-DSPE) achieved since 2017. It also highlights the latest analysis techniques such as newly developed high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) methods, capillary electrophoresis (CE), gas chromatography (GC), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) procedures, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays as well as novel nanoprobes-based biosensing techniques. In addition, a comparison is made between the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches while presenting critical challenges and prospects in pharmacokinetic studies and therapeutic drug monitoring.

Recent advances in the use of SPME for drug analysis in clinical, toxicological, and forensic medicine studies

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has gained attention as a simple, fast, and non-exhaustive extraction technique, as its unique features enable its use for the extraction of many classes of drugs from biological matrices. This sample-preparation approach consolidates sampling and sample preparation into a single step, in addition to providing analyte preconcentration and sample clean-up. These features have helped SPME become an integral part of several analytical protocols for monitoring drug concentrations in human matrices in clinical, toxicological, and forensic medicine studies. Over the years, researchers have continued to develop the SPME technique, resulting in the introduction of novel sorbents and geometries, which have resulted in improved extraction efficiencies. This review summarizes developments and applications of SPME published between 2016 and 2022, specifically in relation to the analysis of central nervous system drugs, drugs used to treat cardiovascular disorders and bacterial infections, and drugs used in immunosuppressive and anticancer therapies.

Overview of therapeutic drug monitoring and clinical practice

With the rapid development of clinical pharmacy in China, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) has become an essential tool for guiding rational clinical drug use and is widely concerned. TDM is a tool that combines pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic knowledge to optimize personalized drug therapy, which can improve treatment outcomes, reduce drug-drug toxicity, and avoid the risk of developing drug resistance. To effectively implement TDM, accurate and sophisticated analytical methods are required. By researching the literature published in recent years, we summarize the types of commonly monitored drugs, therapeutic windows, and clinical assays and track the trends and hot spots of therapeutic drug monitoring. The purpose is to provide guidelines for clinical blood drug concentration monitoring, to implement individualized drug delivery programs better, to ensure the rational use of drugs for patients, and to provide a reference for the group to carry out related topics in the future.

The development of electrochemical DNA biosensor based on poly-l-methionine and bimetallic AuPt nanoparticles coating: Picomolar detection of Imatinib and Erlotinib

We report on the preparation of a new and simple electrochemical DNA biosensor based on DNA/AuPt/p-L-Met coating on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE) and its use in the determination of the cancer therapy agents, Imatinib (IMA) and Erlotinib (ERL). Poly-l-methionine (p-L-Met), gold, and platinum nanoparticles (AuPt) were successfully coated by one-step electrodeposition onto the SPE from a solution containing L-Met, HAuCl_4, and H₂PtCl₆. The immobilization of DNA was achieved by drop-casting on the surface of the modified electrode. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) were used to investigate the morphology, the structure, and the electrochemical performance of the sensor. Experimental factors influencing the coating and DNA immobilization processes were optimized. The peak currents originating from guanine (G) and adenine (A) oxidation of ds-DNA were used as signals to quantify IMA and ERL in the concentration range 2.33-80 nM and 0.032-1.0 nM with the LODs of 0.18 nM and 0.009 nM, respectively. The biosensor developed was suitable for determining IMA and ERL in human serum and pharmaceutical samples.

A robust electrochemical sensing platform for the detection of erlotinib based on nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots/copper nanoparticles-polyaniline-graphene oxide nanohybrid

Erlotinib is a potent and highly specific tyrosine kinase inhibitor with the hindering effects on the growth of cancer cells. An electrochemical sensor with the great sensitivity and selectivity was fabricated for determining erlotinib by using a graphite rod electrode modified by the nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and a ternary nanohybrid comprising copper nanoparticles, polyaniline, along with graphene oxide (N-GQDs/CuNPs-PANI@GO) for the first time. The establishment of PANI and CuNPs was done simultaneously on the GO surface by thein situoxidative polymerization method. The morphological characteristics and elemental structure of the synthesized nanoparticles were examined by some microscopy techniques and x-ray energy/diffraction methods. The fabricated sensor represented the electrocatalytic activity towards erlotinib with a linear detection range from 1.0 nM to 35.0μM, a detection limit of 0.712 nM, and a sensitivity of 1.3604μAμM^-1. Moreover, the N-GQDs/CuNPs-PANI@GO sensor showed acceptable stability up to 30 d (94.82%), reproducibility (RSD values of 3.19% intraday and 3.52% interday), and repeatability (RSD value of 3.65%) as a novel and powerful electrochemical sensor. It was successfully applied to monitor erlotinib in the drug-injected aqueous solution, serum, and urine samples that proved the capability of the sensor for the erlotinib monitoring in the biological samples.

Turn-off fluorescence of nitrogen and sulfur carbon quantum dots as effective fluorescent probes for determination of imatinib. Application to biological fluids

Nitrogen and sulfur carbon quantum dots(N,S-CQDs) as effective fluorescent nanoprobes were synthesized through one-step-hydrothermal method using thiosemicarbazide (as nitrogen and sulfur source) and citric acid (as carbon source). The highly fluorescent N,S-CQDs were subjected to various characterization techniques. The fluorescence of the synthesized N,S-CQDs is characterized by maximum fluorescence emission at 415 nm after excitation at 345 nm and a high quantum yield of 0.58. The native N,S-CQDs fluorescence is quantitatively quenched upon addition of imatinib (IMA), so they are used for its spectrofluorimetric determination in its pharmaceutical formulations and biological fluids. Under optimal conditions, N,S-CQDs exhibited a "turn-off" fluorescence response to IMA over the range of 1.0 to 15.0 µg/mL with a limit of quantification of 0.42 µg/mL and a lower detection limit of 0.14 µg/mL. Stern-Volmer equation was used to study the mechanism of quenching and it was found to occur through static quenching mechanism. The method was extended to the in-vitro determination of the drug in spiked human urine and plasma samples and the percent recoveries were satisfactory.

Sensitive and specific clinically diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 employing a novel biosensor based on boron nitride quantum dots/flower-like gold nanostructures signal amplification

The sudden increase of the COVID-19 outbreak and its continued growth with mutations in various forms has created a global health crisis as well as devastating social and economic effects over the past two years. In this study, a screen-printed carbon electrode reinforced with boron nitride quantum dots/flower-like gold nanostructures (BNQDs/FGNs/SPCE) and functionalized by highly specific antisense DNA oligonucleotide presents an alternative and promising solution for targeting SARS-CoV-2 RNA without nucleic acid amplification. The platform was tested on 120 SARS-CoV-2 RNA isolated from real clinical samples (60 positive and 60 negative confirmed by conventional RT-PCR method). Based on obtained quantitative results and statistical analysis (box-diagram, cutoff value, receiver operating characteristic curve, and t-test), the biosensor revealed a significant difference between the two positive and negative groups with 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity. To evaluate the quantitation capacity and detection limit of the biosensor for clinical trials, the detection performance of the biosensor for continuously diluted RNA isolated from SARS-CoV-2-confirmed patients was compared to those obtained by RT-PCR, demonstrating that the detection limit of the biosensor is lower than or comparable to that of RT-PCR. The ssDNA/BNQDs/FGNs/SPCE showed negligible cross-reactivity with RNA fragments isolated from Influenza A (IAV) clinical samples and also remained stable for up to 14 days. In conclusion, the fabricated biosensor may serve as a promising tool for point-of-care applications.

Enhancing autophagy in Alzheimer's disease through drug repositioning

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the biggest human health threats due to increases in aging of the global population. Unfortunately, drugs for treating AD have been largely ineffective. Interestingly, downregulation of macroautophagy (autophagy) plays an essential role in AD pathogenesis. Therefore, targeting autophagy has drawn considerable attention as a therapeutic approach for the treatment of AD. However, developing new therapeutics is time-consuming and requires huge investments. One of the strategies currently under consideration for many diseases is "drug repositioning" or "drug repurposing". In this comprehensive review, we have provided an overview of the impact of autophagy on AD pathophysiology, reviewed the therapeutics that upregulate autophagy and are currently used in the treatment of other diseases, including cancers, and evaluated their repurposing as a possible treatment option for AD. In addition, we discussed the potential of applying nano-drug delivery to neurodegenerative diseases, such as AD, to overcome the challenge of crossing the blood brain barrier and specifically target molecules/pathways of interest with minimal side effects.

Recent Developments in Voltammetric Analysis of Pharmaceuticals Using Disposable Pencil Graphite Electrodes

The even growing production of both well-known and new derivatives with pharmaceutical action involves the need for developing facile and reliable methods for the analysis of these compounds. Among the widely used instrumental techniques, the electrochemical ones are probably the simplest and the most rapid, also having good performance characteristics. However, the key tool in electroanalysis is the working electrode. Due to the inherent electrochemical and economic advantages of the pencil graphite electrode (PGE), the interest in its applicability in the analysis of different analytes has continuously increased in recent years. Thus, this paper aims to review the scientific reports published in the last 10 years on the use of the disposable eco- and user-friendly PGEs in the electroanalysis of compounds of pharmaceutical importance in different matrices. The PGE characteristics and designs (bare or modified with various types of materials), along with their applications and performance parameters (e.g., linear range, limit of detection, and reproducibility), will be discussed, and their advantages and limitations will be critically emphasized.

The first diagnostic test for specific detection of Mycobacterium simiae using an electrochemical label-free DNA nanobiosensor

Mycobacterium simiae has been reported to be the most prevalent species of Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in many countries. As both phenotypic and molecular detection of M. simiae and other NTMs have limitations, finding an accurate, fast, and low-cost diagnostic method is critical for the management of infections. Here, we report the development of a new type of label-free electrochemical biosensor using a gold electrode decorated with l-cysteine/PAMAM dendrimer for specific targeting of M. simiae ITS sequence. DNA hybridization was monitored by measuring changes in the free guanine electrical signal with changing ssDNA target concentrations by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied for the optimization of variables affecting biosensor response. Under optimal conditions, the biosensor revealed a wide linear range from 10^-14 M to 10^-6 M and a detection limit of 1.40 fM. The fabricated biosensor showed an excellent selectivity to M. simiae in the presence of other similar pathogenic bacteria. Moreover, experimental results confirmed that this biosensor exhibited great precision and high reproducibility, hence provides a low-cost, label-free, and faster detection analysis, representing a novel strategy in detecting other NTMs.

Dual-signaling electrochemical ratiometric strategy for simultaneous quantification of anticancer drugs

A novel and unique ratiometric electrochemical sensing strategy for highly reliable and selective simultaneous quantification of Irinotecan (IRI) and 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) has been developed based on Pd-Au/MWCNT-rGO nanocomposite. Introduction of Pd-Au/MWCNT-rGO significantly improved the speed of electron transport, specific surface area, and electrical catalytic ability of sensing system due to synergistic effect of Pd-Au bimetallic nanoparticles and MWCNT-rGO hybrid structure. The assay strategy was based on the use of ferrocene (Fc) as reference electroactive substance and IRI and 5-FU as analytes with three oxidation peaks at different potentials (Fc at +0.20 V, IRI at +0.58 V, and 5-FU at +1.17 V). The oxidation peak currents of the IRI and 5-FU were gradually enhanced while that of Fc remained almost constant with continuous adding of IRI and 5-FU. By using I_IRI/I_Fc and I_5-FU/I_Fc signals as output, the designed ratiometric system showed good performance with a wide linear range of 0.05-40 μM for IRI and 0.05-75 μM for 5-FU and low detection limit of 0.0061 μM and 0.0094 μM for IRI and 5-FU, respectively. This study proved that ratiometric strategy is able to eliminate disturbance caused by the sensing environment and possess high sensitivity, reproducibility, stability, and selectivity toward anticancer drugs detection, over potential interferents as well as opens a new procedure for reliable and selective simultaneous analysis of other analytes.

Detection of Imatinib Based on Electrochemical Sensor Constructed Using Biosynthesized Graphene-Silver Nanocomposite

The establishment of a monitoring technique for imatinib is necessary in clinical and environmental toxicology. Leaf extracts of Lycoris longituba were used as reducing agent for the one-step synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-Ag nanocomposites. This nanocomposite was characterized by TEM, FTIR, XRD, and other instruments. Then, the graphene/Ag nanocomposite was used as a modifier to be cemented on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode. This electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical sensing performance. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed electrode could detect imatinib at 10 nM−0.28 mM with a low limit of detection. This electrochemical sensor also has excellent anti-interference performance and reproducibility.

Improved solid phase extraction for selective and efficient quantification of sunset yellow in different food samples using a novel molecularly imprinted polymer reinforced by Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2

The overuse of synthetic dyes in food products has gradually increased in recent years, resulting food safety and human health has become a global issue. An innovative design of a magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2@MIP) for efficient, fast, and selective determination of sunset yellow (SY) from different food products was described in this study. The absorption properties of Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2@MIP were elucidated by adsorption kinetics, isotherms, reusability, and selectivity experiments. Because of the incorporation of porous Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2nanocomposite into molecularly imprinted polymer an efficient nanosorbent with a short equilibrium time, a high adsorption capacity, and a good imprinting factor was finally obtained. The porous Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2@MIP are also used for quantification of the SY. Under optimal conditions, good linearity (R2 0.9964) in the range of 1.0-120 mg L-1 and a low limit of detection (0.41 mg L-1) was observed with satisfactory recoveries (92.50-106.1%) and excellent reusability (RSD ≤ 6.6% after 12 cycles).

Response surface methodology optimized electrochemical DNA biosensor based on HAPNPTs/PPY/MWCNTs nanocomposite for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis

An important issue in the prognosis of tuberculosis (TB) is a short period between correct diagnosis and start the suitable antibiotic therapy. So, a rapid and valid method for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) complex is considered as a necessity. Herein, a rapid, low-cost, and PCR-free DNA biosensor was developed based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), polypyrrole (PPy), and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAPNPs) for highly sensitive and specific recognition of M.tb. The biosensor consisted of M.tb ssDNA probe covalently attached to the HANPs/PPy/MWCNTs/GCE surface that hybridized to a complementary target sequence to form a duplex DNA. The M.tb target recognition was based on the oxidation signal of the electroactive Methylene Blue (MB) on the surface of the modified GCE using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method. It is worth to mention that for the first time Plackett-Burman (PB) screening design and response surface method (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) was applied as a powerful and an efficient approach to find optimal conditions for maximum M.tb biosensor performance leading to simplicity and rapidity of operation. The proposed DNA biosensor exhibits a wide detection range from 0.25 to 200.0 nM with a low detection limit of 0.141 nM. The performance of designed biosensor for clinical diagnosis and practical applications was revealed through hybridization between DNA probe-modified GCE and extracted DNA from sputum clinical samples.

Nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors for the detection of pharmaceutical compounds

The surging growth of the pharmaceutical industry is a result of the rapidly increasing human population, which has inevitably led to new biomedical and environmental issues. Aside from the quality control of pharmaceutical production and drug delivery, there is an urgent need for precise, sensitive, portable, and cost-effective technologies to track patient overdosing and to monitor ambient water sources and wastewater for pharmaceutical pollutants. The development of advanced nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors for the detection of pharmaceutical compounds has garnered immense attention due to their advantages, such as high sensitivity and selectivity, real-time monitoring, and ease of use. This review article surveys state-of-the-art nanomaterials-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors for the detection and quantification of six classes of significant pharmaceutical compounds, including anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-cancer drugs. Important factors such as sensor/analyte interactions, design rationale, fabrication, characterization, sensitivity, and selectivity are discussed. Strategies for the development of high-performance electrochemical sensors and biosensors tailored toward specific pharmaceuticals are highlighted to provide readers and scientists with an extensive toolbox for the detection of a wide range of pharmaceuticals. Our aims are two-fold: (i) to inspire readers by further elucidating the properties and functionalities of existing nanomaterials for the detection of pharmaceuticals; and (ii) to provide examples of the potential opportunities that these devices have for the advanced sensing of pharmaceutical compounds toward safeguarding human health and ecosystems on a global scale.

Advances in Electrochemical Aptasensors Based on Carbon Nanomaterials

Carbon nanomaterials offer unique opportunities for the assembling of electrochemical aptasensors due to their high electroconductivity, redox activity, compatibility with biochemical receptors and broad possibilities of functionalization and combination with other auxiliary reagents. In this review, the progress in the development of electrochemical aptasensors based on carbon nanomaterials in 2016–2020 is considered with particular emphasis on the role of carbon materials in aptamer immobilization and signal generation. The synthesis and properties of carbon nanotubes, graphene materials, carbon nitride, carbon black particles and fullerene are described and their implementation in the electrochemical biosensors are summarized. Examples of electrochemical aptasensors are classified in accordance with the content of the surface layer and signal measurement mode. In conclusion, the drawbacks and future prospects of carbon nanomaterials’ application in electrochemical aptasensors are briefly discussed.

Hollow fiber-based liquid phase microextraction followed by analytical instrumental techniques for quantitative analysis of heavy metal ions and pharmaceuticals

Hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) and electromembrane extraction (EME) are miniaturized extraction techniques, and have been coupled with various analytical instruments for trace analysis of heavy metals, drugs and other organic compounds, in recent years. HF-LPME and EME provide high selectivity, efficient sample cleanup and enrichment, and reduce the consumption of organic solvents to a few micro-liters per sample. HF-LPME and EME are compatible with different analytical instruments for chromatography, electrophoresis, atomic spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and electrochemical detection. HF-LPME and EME have gained significant popularity during the recent years. This review focuses on hollow fiber based techniques (especially HF-LPME and EME) of heavy metals and pharmaceuticals (published 2017 to May 2019), and their combinations with atomic spectroscopy, UV-VIS spectrophotometry, high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, and voltammetry.

In Situ Growth of Metal-Organic Framework HKUST-1 on Graphene Oxide Nanoribbons with High Electrochemical Sensing Performance in Imatinib Determination

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been previously investigated as electrode materials for developing electrochemical sensors. They have usually been reported to suffer from poor conductivity and improvement in the conductivity of MOFs is still a great challenge. Here, we reported the fabrication of an electrochemical sensor based on the in situ growth of framework HKUST-1 on conductive graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs)-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) (HKUST-1/GONRs/GCE). The as-fabricated modified electrode was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and Raman spectroscopy. The voltammetric response of HKUST-1/GONRs/GCE toward Imatinib (IMA), as an anticancer drug, is dramatically higher than HKUST-1/GCE because of the synergic effect of the GONRs and HKUST-1 framework. The calibration curve at the HKUST-1/GONRs/GCE for IMA covered two linear dynamic ranges, 0.04-1.0 and 1.0-80 μmol L^-1, with a detection limit of 0.006 μmol L^-1 (6 nmol L^-1). Taking advantage of the conductivity of GONRs and large surface area of HKUST-1, a sensitive modified electrode was developed for the electrochemical determination of IMA. The present method provides an effective strategy to solve the poor conductivity of the MOFs. Finally, the obtained electrochemical performance made this modified electrode promising in the determination of IMA in urine and serum samples.

Carbon nanotube/polyurethane modified hollow fiber-pencil graphite electrode for in situ concentration and electrochemical quantification of anticancer drugs Capecitabine and Erlotinib

A sensitive electrochemical sensor has been designed for in situ preconcentration and determination of anticancer drugs Capecitabine (CPT) and Erlotinib hydrochloride (ETHC) based on a pencil graphite electrode modified with multivalued carbon nanotube-polyurethane (MWCNT-PUFIX) nanocomposite that was supported with a piece of polypropylene hollow fiber (HF-PGE). The electrochemical behavior of CPT and ETHC on the MWCNT-PUFIX/HF-PGE modified electrode was investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques and the obtained results confirmed its efficiency for sensing of CPT and ETHC. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. After optimization of some effective parameters on the method efficiency including pH, nanocomposite amount, the type of organic solvent, scan rate and the effect of some additives, the mentioned sensor presented suitable results for determination of CPT and ETHC with the linear ranges from 7.70 to 142.00 μM and 0.11 to 23.50 μM and detection limits of 0.11 and 0.02 μM, respectively. Also, the fabricated sensor has shown good performance in analysis of CPT and ETHC in biological samples.

Modern Assay Techniques for Cancer Drugs: Electroanalytical and Liquid Chromatography Methods

In the past decades, patients who have chemotherapy treatment have considerably increased number. At this point, the development of rapid precise, and reliable methods are very important to analyze cancer drugs from their dosage forms, animals or human biological samples. Among all the analytical methods, electrochemical methods hold an important position with their unique properties such as specificity in the biological recognition process, fast response, and their reliability and do not need a pretreatment process. Chromatographic methods are also used in a wide range of analytical applications for the analyses of anticancer drugs. The power of chromatography comes from its ability to separate a mixture of analytes and determination of their concentrations. Chromatographic techniques can mainly be divided into gas, liquid, and supercritical fluid chromatography. In the frame of this information, this review is aimed to provide basic principles of electroanalytical and high-performance liquid chromatography methods for the analysis of cancer drugs. In addition, some selected applications for electrochemistry-related techniques and high-performance liquid chromatography, for the determination of anti-cancer pharmaceuticals published in the last five years are also discussed.

Simultaneous electrochemical determination of levodopa and piroxicam using a glassy carbon electrode modified with a ZnO-Pd/CNT nanocomposite

A highly conductive electrochemical sensor was constructed for the simultaneous electrochemical determination of levodopa and piroxicam by modification of a glassy carbon electrode with a ZnO-Pd/CNT nanocomposite (GCE/ZnO-Pd/CNTs). The ZnO-Pd/CNT nanocomposite was synthesized by the sol-gel procedure and was characterized by EDAX, MAP and SEM. The sensor was shown to improve the oxidation signal of levodopa and piroxicam by ∼70.2-fold and ∼41.5-fold, respectively. This marks the first time that the electrochemical behavior of levodopa and piroxicam have been investigated at the surface of GCE/ZnO-Pd/CNTs. The voltammogram showed a quasi-reversible signal and an irreversible redox signal for electro-oxidation of levodopa and piroxicam, respectively. The GCE/ZnO-Pd/CNTs showed a linear dynamic range of 0.6 to 100.0 μM (at a potential of ∼180 mV) and 0.1 to 90 μM (at a potential of ∼480 mV) with detection limits of 0.08 and 0.04 μM for the determination of levodopa and piroxicam, respectively. GCE/ZnO-Pd/CNTs were then applied for the determination of levodopa and piroxicam in real samples.
