Use of trace elements addition for anaerobic digestion of brewer's spent grains

Subcritical water pretreatment enhanced methane-rich biogas production from the anaerobic digestion of brewer's spent grains

ABSTRACTThis study evaluated the effectiveness of a semi-continuous flow-through subcritical water hydrolysis (SWH) pretreatment of brewer's spent grains (BSG) for subsequent application in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process. BSG pretreatment was conducted at 160 °C and 15 MPa with a flow rate of 10 mL water min-1 and 15 g water g-1 BSG. The results revealed that SWH attacked the hemicellulose structure, releasing arabinose (46.54 mg g-1) and xylose (39.90 mg g-1) sugars, and proteins (34.89 mg g-1). The start-up of anaerobic reactors using pretreated BSG (747.71 L CH4 kg-1 TVS) increased the methane yield compared with the reactor without pretreatment (53.21 L CH4 kg-1 TVS). For the process with pretreatment, the generation of electricity (134 kWh t-1 BSG) and heat (604 MJ t-1) are responsible for the mitigation of 43.90 kg CO2 eq t-1 BSG. The adoption of SWH as an eco-friendly pretreatment of biomass for AD could be a technological route to increase methane-rich biogas and bioenergy production, supporting the circular economy transition by reducing the carbon footprint of the beer industry.

Promotion of granular activated carbon on methanogenesis of readily acidogenic carbohydrate-rich waste at low inoculation ratio

Although granular activated carbon (GAC) supplementation into food waste anaerobic digestion system is an efficient means to enhance methane production. As yet, little is known whether GAC supplementation is suitable for the extreme condition of pH below 4.5, which occurs in the use of readily acidogenic carbohydrate-rich waste (RACW) as methanogenic substrate when at low inoculation/substrate (I/S) ratio. This study investigated the effects of GAC on RACW anaerobic digestion under different inoculation/substrate (I/S) ratios. It was found that the addition of GAC was a preferred alternative method to enhancing I/S ratio for promoting methane production from RACW. The additive dose of 20 g/L was recommended for the methanogenesis of RACW at low I/S of 1:2, and the methane yield was enhanced by 12 times (505 mL/g-VS) compared with that (42 mL/g-VS) from the control. This promotion resulted from the apparently solving the over-acidogenesis problem and the adjustment of pH to the desired range. Further investigation revealed that the added GAC enhanced the activities of acetate kinase and coenzyme F₄₂₀, that engaged in the acidogenic and methanogenic reactions. Meanwhile, the decrease of hydrogenase and increase of c-Cyts implied that the metabolism of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) was probably stimulated by GAC. Microbial investigation inferred that the enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogens and DIET-mediated syntrophic partners of Geobacter/Syntrophomonas with Methanosarcina were responsible for the enhanced methane yield.

Improving Anaerobic Digestion of Brewery and Distillery Spent Grains through Aeration across a Silicone Membrane

An increase in the number of independent breweries and distilleries has led to an increase in the amount of spent grains with inadequate means of disposal. One option for disposal is as feedstock for anaerobic digestion if digester stability is ensured. In this study, brewers’ spent grain and distillers’ spent grain were used as substrate for anaerobic digestion for 32 weeks. The digestate was treated by recirculation through a silicone hose located in an external tank filled with saline solution. The hose served as a permeable membrane allowing for the passage of gases. The recirculation tanks were fitted with check valves to maintain three pressure/gas regimes: 26 mm Hg N2, 26 mm Hg aeration or 100 mm Hg aeration. A fourth digester was operated with no recirculation as the control. These treatments were chosen to determine if differences in digester stability, wastewater treatment efficiency, and biogas production could be detected. A combination of dairy and swine manure was used as seeding to provide a methanogenic consortium and bicarbonate buffering. However, despite trying to provide for adequate initial bicarbonate buffering, all four digesters had low initial buffering and consequently low pH as short-chain fatty acids accumulated. After six weeks, bicarbonate buffering and pH increased as methane production increased, and short-chain fatty acids decreased. Later, despite the fluxes of O2 and N2 across the silicone membrane being very low, differences between the various treatments were noted. The pH of the digestate treated by N2 recirculation was lower than the other digesters and decreased further after distillers’ spent grain was substituted for brewers’ spent grain. Aeration at a pressure of 26 mm Hg and 100 mg Hg increased biogas production compared to other treatments but only significantly so at 100 mm Hg. These results suggest that partial purging of dissolved gases in anaerobic digestate by the small fluxes of N2 or O2 across a permeable membrane may affect digester performance.

Bismuth-Chitosan Nanocomposite Sensors for Trace Level Detection of Ni(II) and Co(II) in Water Samples

Trace minerals play an essential role in methane production via anaerobic digestion (AD). It is important to monitor Ni(II) and Co(II) concentrations and the Ni/Co concentration ratio for the rapid diagnosis of the ecological status or activity of methanogens in AD. Electrochemical detection of Ni(II) and Co(II) was investigated by coating the Bi-chitosan nanocomposite on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) via the electrodeposition technique. A square-wave adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry technique (SWAdCSV) was applied and optimized when dimethylglyoxime (DMG) was used as the chelating agent for Ni(II) and Co(II) measurements. The SWAdCSV results showed that the current peaks for Co(II) detection are 6.1 times greater than the current peaks for Ni(II) measurements, probably due to the different affinity of DMG molecules between Ni(II) and Co(II). DMG molecules demonstrated higher selectivity toward Co(II) cations compared to Ni(II). The modified Bi-chitosan GCE developed in this study showed a relatively wide range of the Ni(II) and Co(II) concentrations (2–100 µg L−1) with a limit of detection of 3.6 µg L−1 for Ni(II) and 2.4 µg L−1 for Co(II), respectively. The developed sensor was applied to Ni(II) and Co(II) spiked natural water samples and showed good performance of detection with 12 consecutive measurements. Overall, the fabricated sensor showed excellent sensitivity toward Ni(II) and Co(II) in natural water samples.

Scanning agro-industrial wastes as substrates for fungal biopesticide production: Use of Beauveria bassiana and Trichoderma harzianum in solid-state fermentation

As a waste valorisation option, agro-industrial residues (rice husk, apple pomace, whisky draff, soy fiber, rice fiber, wheat straw, beer draff, orange peel and potato peel) were tested as feasible substrates for fungal conidia production. Solid-state fermentation tests were conducted at laboratory scale (100 g) with Beauveria bassiana or Trichoderma harzianum which conidia are reported to have biopesticide properties. Conidia concentrations with all substrates were at least two orders of magnitude above inoculum except for both fibers, thus demonstrating the possibilities of the proposed waste recovery option. Highest productions were at least 1 × 10⁹ conidia g^-1 dry matter for Beauveria bassiana using rice husk or potato peel and higher than 5 × 10⁹ conidia g^-1 dry matter for Trichoderma harzianum using beer draff, potato peel or orange pomace. Principal component analysis has been used to understand which parameters affect the most fungal conidia production for an easier evaluation of other similar wastes, being air-filled porosity and initial pH for Beauveria bassiana and cumulative oxygen consumption, initial moisture and total sugar content for Trichoderma harzianum.

Role of waste-based geopolymer spheres addition for pH control and efficiency enhancement of anaerobic digestion process

In anaerobic digestion processes, pH has a vital role due to the direct impacts on the microbial community. An eco-friendly approach has been applied to control pH in anaerobic bioreactors, using waste-containing fly ash geopolymer spheres (GS) instead of powdered chemical compounds, to promote continuous alkalis leaching. The influence of GS porosity and concentration on the behavior of anaerobic sequential batch reactor treating cheese whey was evaluated. Results showed that the use of GS with the highest concentration and porosity promoted an increase in methane yield up to 30%, compared to the assay with powdered chemical compounds addition. In addition, GS boosted butyric acid production to the detriment of propionic acid, which favored methane production by a factor up to 1.2. This innovative approach indicates that GS addition can regulate pH in anaerobic digesters treating challenging wastewaters and, simultaneously, improve not only its efficiency but also the sustainability of the entire process.

The effect of brewery spent grain application on biogas yields and kinetics in co-digestion with sewage sludge

The present study examines the effect of introducing dried brewery spent grain (BSG), known as the main solid by-product of the brewery industry on biogas yields and kinetics in co-digestion with sewage sludge (SS). The experiment was conducted in semi-continuous anaerobic reactors (supplied once a day) operating under mesophilic conditions (35°C) at different hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 18 and 20 d. In co-digestion runs, the BSG mass to the feed volume ratio was constant and maintained 1:10.The results indicated that the addition of BSG did not influence the biogas production, by comparison with SS mono-digestion (control run). At HRT of 18 d, in the co-digestion run, the average methane yield was 0.27 m³ kg/VS_added, while in the control run the higher value of 0.29 m³ kg/VS_addedwas observed. However, there was no difference in terms of statistical significance. At HRT of 20 d, the methane yield was 0.21 m³ kg/VS_added for both mono- and co-digestion runs. In the BSG presence, the decrease in kinetic constant values was observed. As compared to SS mono-digestion, reductions by 21 and 35% were found at HRT of 20 and 18 d, respectively. However, due to the supplementation of the feedstock with BSG rich in organic compounds, the significantly enhanced energy profits were achieved with the highest value of approx. 40% and related to the longer HRT of 20 d. Importantly, the mono- and co-digestion process proceeded in stable manner. Therefore, the anaerobic co-digestion of SS and BSG might be considered as a cost-effective solution that could contribute to the energy self-efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and sustainable waste management for breweries.

Anaerobic Digestion of Pretreated Industrial Residues and Their Energetic Process Integration

The food and beverage industry offers a wide range of organic feedstocks for use in biogas production by means of anaerobic digestion (AD). Microorganisms convert organic compounds—solid, pasty, or liquid ones—within four steps to biogas mainly consisting of CH₄ and CO₂. Therefore, various conversion technologies are available with several examples worldwide to show for the successful implementation of biogas technologies on site. The food and beverage industry offer a huge potential for biogas technologies due to the sheer amount of process residues and their concurrent requirement for heat and power. The following study analyzes specific industries with respect to their implementation potential based on arising waste and heat and power demand. Due to their chemical composition, several feedstocks are resistant against microbiological degradation to a great extent. A combination of physical-, chemical-, and microbiological pretreatment are used to increase the biological availability of the feedstock. The following examples will discuss how to best implement AD technology in industrial processes. The brewery industry, dairy production, slaughterhouses, and sugar industry will serve as examples.

Anaerobic digestion

Worldwide waste generation has become a topic of interest since the accumulation of this waste has prompted environmental hazards. Among which, anaerobic digestion provides green and efficient alternate solution for removal of toxic waste and energy production. Therefore, this review emphasizes on the recent data published in 2018 on topics related to anaerobic process, enhancement of biogas production, and fermentation efficiency. Furthermore, more focus was made on the factors influencing anaerobic digestion and the effect of trace elements as ionic salts as well as nanoparticles on overall biogas production, respectively. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Anaerobic digestion provide green and efficient alternate solution to deal with. This review focused on the conditions related to anaerobic process to improve biogas production and fermentation efficiency. The trace elements were focused on how to influence biogas production during anaerobic digestion.

Holistic determination of suitable conditions for biogas production from Pennisetum purpureum x Pennisetum americanum liquor in anaerobic baffled reactor

Holistic approach had been undertaken to determine the suitable conditions for biogas production from Pennisetum purpureum x Pennisetum americanum (Napier Pak Chong1) liquor using the anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR). Effects of factors, i.e. organic loading rates (OLRs), feeding schemes, trace element additions and effluent recirculation rates, on ABR performance were systematically investigated. Increase of OLRs and effluent recirculation rates adversely affected methane yields when capability of ABR in containing microorganisms was deteriorated. High stability of ABR performance was detected under the semi-continuous feeding scheme with trace element additions. The suitable condition for ABR was found at the OLR of 4.0 kg COD/m³.d under the semi-continuous feeding scheme with trace element additions at the effluent recirculation rate of 0.5 (Q_R/Q). At this condition, high methane yield (0.49 ± 0.05 Nm³/kg VS_added) could be achieved using the economical ABR at relatively high OLR of 4.0 kg COD/m³.d.
