Preparation and characterization of magnetic modified bone charcoal for removing Cu2+ ions from industrial and mining wastewater

Silicone-modified black peanut shell (BPS) biochar adsorbents: Preparation and their adsorptions for copper(II) from water

Novel silicone-modified biochar adsorbents (BPS-MBCs) were prepared by utilizing waste black peanut shell (BPS) as a raw biochar and gamma-amino-propyl triethoxysilane (silicone) as an inorganic modifier. The novelty of this work is that the incorporation of silicone into BPS can rise the specific surface area and porosity of BPS-MBCs and elevate their adsorptions for copper (II). Sorption kinetics data for copper (II) were molded using five kinetic equations [i.e. Lagergren 1st-order and 2nd-order, intraparticle diffusion (IN-D), Elovich, and Diffusion-chemisorption]. The equilibrium adsorption data for copper (II) were analyzed using two-parameter isotherm equations [i.e. Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Temkin] and three-parameter Sips, Redlich-Peterson and Toth isotherm models. It was validated that copper (II) sorption on BPS-MBCs matched better with pseudo-2nd-order kinetic, Diffusion-chemisorption and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximal qmLan of BPS-MBC-400 was near 284 mg/g at 45 °C. By multi-phase fitting of IN-D modelling, intra-particle diffusion coefficient (kin-d) and diffusion coefficient of external mass-transfer (DEx-Di) for copper (II) were calculated. The low sorption energy from Temkin and mean free energy from D-R modellings implied that copper (II) sorption was initiated by weak non-covalent bond interactions. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that copper (II) on BPS-MBCs was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Recycling of BPS-MBC-400 for copper (II) suggested it has excellent reusability. The major mechanism of copper (II) on BPS-MBCs is possibly comprised of multiple processes, such as physical adsorption (electrostatic attraction), chemical adsorption (adsorption from functional groups, chelation, and ion exchange) and diffusion-chemisorption. Based on these findings, it is expects that BPS-MBCs are promising sorbents for copper (II) eradication from Cu(II)-including wastewater.

Preparation of 6-Amino-N-hydroxyhexanamide-Modified Porous Chelating Resin for Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions

The pollution of water bodies by heavy metal ions has recently become a global concern. In this experiment, a novel chelating resin, D851-6-AHHA, was synthesized by grafting 6-amino-N-hydroxyhexanamide (6-AHHA) onto the (-CH2N-(CH2COOH)2) group of the D851 resin, which contained a hydroxamic acid group, amide group, and some carboxyl groups. This resin was developed for the purpose of removing heavy metal ions, such as Cr(III) and Pb(II), from water. The findings from static adsorption experiments demonstrated the remarkable adsorption effectiveness of D851-6-AHHA resin towards Cr(III) and Pb(II). Specifically, the maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(III) and Pb(II) were determined to be 91.50 mg/g and 611.92 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics of heavy metal ions by D851-6-AHHA resin followed the quasi-second-order kinetic model, while the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model. These findings suggest that the adsorption process was characterized by monolayer chemisorption. The adsorption mechanism of D851-6-AHHA resin was comprehensively investigated through SEM, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS analyses, revealing a high efficiency of D851-6-AHHA resin in adsorbing Cr(III) and Pb(II). Specifically, the (-C(=O)NHOH) group exhibited a notable affinity for Cr(III) and Pb(II), forming stable multi-elemental ring structures with them. Additionally, dynamic adsorption experiments conducted using fixed-bed setups further validated the effectiveness of D851-6-AHHA resin in removing heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In conclusion, the experimental findings underscored the efficacy of D851-6-AHHA resin as a highly efficient adsorbent for remediating water bodies contaminated by heavy metal ions.

Facile fabrication of chitosan/bone/bamboo biochar beads for simultaneous removal of co-existing Cr(VI) and bisphenol a from water

Heavy metal Cr(VI) and organic BPA have posed harmful risks to human health, aquatic organisms and the ecosystem. In this work, Chitosan/bone/bamboo biochar beads (CS-AMCM) were synthesized by co-pyrolysis and in situ precipitation method. These microbeads featured a particle size of approximately 1 ± 0.2 mm and were rich in oxygen/nitrogen functional groups. CS-AMCM was characterized using XRD, Zeta potential, FTIR, etc. Experiments showed that adsorption processes of CS-AMCM on Cr(VI) and BPA fitted well to Langmuir model, with theoretical maximum capacities of 343.61 mg/g and 140.30 mg/g, respectively. Pore filling, electrostatic attraction, redox, complexation and ion exchange were the main mechanisms for Cr(VI), whereas for BPA, the intermolecular force (hydrogen bond) and pore filling were involved. CS-AMCM with adsorbed Cr(VI) demonstrated effective activation in producing ·OH and ·O2 from H2O2, which degraded BPA and Cr(VI) with the removal rates of 99.2% and 98.2%, respectively. CS-AMCM offers the advantages of low-cost, large adsorption capacity, high catalytic degradation efficiency, and favorable recycling in treating Cr(VI) and BPA mixed wastewater, which shows great potential in treating heavy metal and organic matter mixed pollution wastewater.

Salted Dried Bamboo Shoots-Derived Mesoporous Carbon Inherently Doped with SiC and Nitrogen for Capacitive Deionization

Dried bamboo shoots (DBS) are a natural resource with inherent silica content, which can serve as sacrificial templates for the formation of mesoporous carbon but also promote the generation of silicon carbide (SiC). Building on this, we introduced mesoporous and graphitic carbon/SiC (SiC/BSC) as the CDI electrode for copper ion (Cu2+) removal. Mesoporous carbon electrodes facilitate faster ion transport, diffusion, and electron-transfer pathways. Furthermore, SiC accelerates electron transfer and promotes faradic redox reactions during the charge and discharge processes. Consequently, the synergistic effect of SiC/BSC mesoporous carbon material leads to a promising electrode for Cu2+ capacitive deionization. Leveraging these unique properties, the SiC/BSC electrode material exhibits an outstanding CDI performance of 381.5 mg/g at 1.8 V. This study offers a strategy for the preparation of efficient mesoporous carbon materials as CDI electrodes, specifically tailored for the deionization of Cu2+ ions.

Simultaneous removal of tetracycline and copper ions from wastewater by flow-electrode capacitive deionization

ABSTRACTTo effectively solve the problem of tetracycline (TC) and Cu2+ contamination in wastewater, this study innovatively proposed a low-energy flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) technology to simultaneously remove TC and Cu2+ from wastewater. The removal efficiencies of TC and Cu2+ using FCDI was investigated under various voltages, electrode flow rates, influent flow rates, and electrode liquid concentrations. The results showed that the removal efficiency of TC and Cu2+ was 60.78% and 84.43%, respectively. The energy consumption for TC and Cu2+ removal was only 1.76 and 1.10 kWh kg-1, which was lower than other electrochemical systems. The ion removal performance of the FCDI system remained stable after six cycles of continuous operation. These findings demonstrated the promising potential of FCDI as an innovative technology for the simultaneous removal of TC and Cu2+, presenting a significant prospects for application in the water treatment field.

Superior removal of humic acid from aqueous stream using novel calf bones charcoal nanoadsorbent in a reversible process

While the potable water disinfection regimen has significantly reduced waterborne diseases, development of disinfection byproducts (DBP) during this process has brought a global threat to the environment and human health. The most notorious water pollutant, humic acid (HA), transforms into carcinogenic byproducts during the disinfection process (chlorination) of water treatment. HA removal methods are neither economic nor widely available. This study addresses the most urgent global issue of HA removal by developing an innovative and self-regenerative process based on a low-cost and self-regenerative calf bone char (CBC) that removed 92.1-100% of HA. CBC-based HA removal has not been described yet. The developed CBC, as a super adsorbent of HA, was initially characterized by a scanning electron microscope. Various parameters of adsorption/desorption and self-regeneration of CBC adsorbent were experimentally determined. Results show that prepared CBC with a 112 m²/g surface area exhibited adsorption of 38.08 mg/g (HA = 20 mg/L, pH = 4.0) which is several folds higher than the typical amount of HA present in water. The 30 m reaction time was enough to remove HA which is the shorter HA time in comparison to other similar studies. The increase of HA from 0.5 to 5 g/L, raises % HA removal (36.7-99.8%) while a pH decrease (10-4) increases adsorption (12.3-98.3%). The adsorption data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm which demonstrate that adsorption takes place by a monolayer formation. Thermodynamic constants supported the endothermic, spontaneous and reversible nature of adsorption which can attain 100% HA removal. 100% regeneration of exhausted CBC by NaOH further supports the sustainability of the process. CBC as a new adsorbent material thus provides an economical and sustainable water pre-treatment procedure. The present study provides technical guidance for building a cost-effective and scalable process capable of providing clean water.

Highly efficient poly(6-acryloylamino-N-hydroxyhexanamide) resin for adsorption of heavy metal ions

Heavy metal wastewater pollution has become an ecological challenge worldwide. This study reports the development of a novel poly (6-acryloylamino-N-hydroxyhexanamide) (PAHHA) resin for effective adsorption of heavy metal ions, including Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺. The chelating resin was synthesized by the grafting reaction between 6-amino-N-hydroxyhexanamide and polyacrylic resin, thus containing the hydroxamate and acylamino groups. The batch adsorption experiments revealed that the PAHHA resin exhibited an excellent adsorption performance for Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺ were determined to be 238.59, 232.48 and 115.77 mg·g^-1, respectively. Based on the adsorption kinetics, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was noted to fit well for all metal ions. The metal ion concentration as a function of the equilibrium adsorption capacity fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm, thus indicating the single layer adsorption process. The adsorption mechanism was investigated by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and adsorption isotherms. It was revealed that the PAHHA resin possessed multiple active sites, including -CONHOH, -CONH- and -COOH, which could strongly adsorb the metal ions. Specifically, the -CONHOH group displayed a high affinity by forming a stable five-membered ring with heavy metal ions. Overall, the developed resin exhibits advantages such as simple synthesis, inexpensive raw material and good recyclability, along with high adsorption ability, thus providing a new approach for efficiently treating wastewater contaminated with heavy metal ions.

Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Silica Meets Tannic Acid: Designing Green Nanoplatforms for Environment Preservation

Hybrid tannic acid-silica-based porous nanoparticles, TA-SiO2 NPs, have been synthesized under mild conditions in the presence of green and renewable tannic acid biopolymer, a glycoside polymer of gallic acid present in a large part of plants. Tannic acid (TA) was exploited as both a structuring directing agent and green chelating site for heavy metal ions recovery from aqueous solutions. Particles morphologies and porosity were easily tuned by varying the TA initial amount. The sample produced with the largest TA amount showed a specific surface area an order of magnitude larger than silica nanoparticles. The adsorption performance was investigated by using TA-SiO2 NPs as adsorbents for copper (II) ions from an aqueous solution. The effects of the initial Cu2+ ions concentration and the pH values on the adsorption capability were also investigated. The resulting TA-SiO2 NPs exhibited a different adsorption behaviour towards Cu2+, which was demonstrated through different tests. The largest adsorption (i.e., ~50 wt% of the initial Cu2+ amount) was obtained with the more porous nanoplatforms bearing a higher final TA content. The TA-nanoplatforms, stable in pH value around neutral conditions, can be easily produced and their use would well comply with a green strategy to reduce wastewater pollution.

A clean process for selective recovery of copper from industrial wastewater by extraction-precipitation with p-tert-octyl phenoxy acetic acid

A novel method for the selective removal and recovery of copper ion from copper-containing wastewater by extraction-precipitation with p-tert-octyl phenoxy acetic acid as a precipitant is presented. The morphology, thermal stability and solubility of POAA were synthesized and characterized. Then the application of POAA to precipitate copper from simulated copper-containing wastewater was studied. The effects of some factors (i.e., time, pH, temperature, dosage of precipitant) on copper precipitation efficiency (P%) and water solubility of POAA were discussed. The extraction-precipitation mechanism of POAA and Cu²⁺ was investigated by slope analysis combined with SEM, EDS, XPS and IR spectra. The concentration and purity of copper from industrial wastewater increased from 100.2 mg/L to 27,916 mg/L and 13.71%-93.01% respectively, treating by the proposed extraction-precipitation. Moreover, POAA revealed good stability in the recycling processes. Extraction-precipitation strategy is simple, efficient and sustainable, which can effectively reduce the volume of sludge in the process of wastewater treatment and produce copper concentrated solution with industrial value, which has revealed application potential for the clean production of copper smelting enterprises.
