Anaerobic digestion of chicken manure: Sequences of chemical structures in dissolved organic matter and its effect on acetic acid production

The production of methyl mercaptan is the main odor source of chicken manure treated with a vertical aerobic fermenter

The process of harmless treatment of livestock manure produces a large amount of odor, which poses a potential threat to human and livestock health. A vertical fermentation tank system is commonly used for the environmentally sound treatment of chicken manure in China, but the composition and concentration of the odor produced and the factors affecting odor emissions remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the types and concentrations of odors produced in the mixing room (MR), vertical fermenter (VF), and aging room (AR) of the system, and analyzed the effects of bacterial communities and metabolic genes on odor production. The results revealed that 34, 26 and 26 odors were detected in the VF, MR and AR, respectively. The total odor concentration in the VF was 66613 ± 10097, which was significantly greater than that in the MR (1157 ± 675) and AR (1143 ± 1005) (P < 0.001), suggesting that the VF was the main source of odor in the vertical fermentation tank system. Methyl mercaptan had the greatest contribution to the odor produced by VF, reaching 47.82%, and the concentration was 0.6145 ± 0.2164 mg/m3. The abundance of metabolic genes did not correlate significantly with odor production, but PICRUSt analysis showed that cysteine and methionine metabolism involved in methyl mercaptan production was significantly more enriched in MR and VF than in AR. Bacillus was the most abundant genus in the VF, with a relative abundance significantly greater than that in the MR (P < 0.05). The RDA results revealed that Bacillus was significantly and positively correlated with methyl mercaptan. The use of large-scale aerobic fermentation systems to treat chicken manure needs to focused on the production of methyl mercaptan.

Insight into response mechanism of short-chain fatty acids to refined microbial transformation order of dissolved organic matter ranked by molecular weight during dry anaerobic digestion

Dynamic transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) contributes to short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production during anaerobic digestion. However, the impact of refined transformation of DOM ranked by molecular weight (MW) on SCFAs has never been investigated. Results indicated that DOM conversion order was 3500-7000 Da>(MW>14000 Da) > 7000-4000 Da during hydrolysis stage, while it was independent of their MW in acidogenesis phase and followed a low to high MW order during methanogenesis stage. Proteins-like DOMs with different MW were closely related to SCFAs. Eight groups of microorganisms (e.g., Bacillus and Caldicoprobacter) responsible for the conversion of proteins-like DOMs to SCFAs. The possible routes linking environmental properties to microorganisms-proteins-like DOMs-SCFAs connections were constructed. Microbial activity modifications by regulating moisture, pH, NO3--N and NH4+-N can expedite the conversion of proteins-like DOMs to SCFAs. The study emphasizes the importance of MW-classification-based biotransformation of organic waste, offering a potential strategy to enhance anaerobic digestion performance.

Diverse Applications of Two-Dimensional Correlation Spectroscopy (2D-COS)

This second of the two-part series of a comprehensive survey review provides the diverse applications of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) covering different probes, perturbations, and systems in the last two years. Infrared spectroscopy has maintained its top popularity in 2D-COS over the past two years. Fluorescence spectroscopy is the second most frequently used analytical method, which has been heavily applied to the analysis of heavy metal binding, environmental, and solution systems. Various other analytical methods including laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, capillary electrophoresis, seismologic, and so on, have also been reported. In the last two years, concentration, composition, and pH are the main effects of perturbation used in the 2D-COS fields, as well as temperature. Environmental science is especially heavily studied using 2D-COS. This comprehensive survey review shows that 2D-COS undergoes continuous evolution and growth, marked by novel developments and successful applications across diverse scientific fields.

Response of fulvic acid linking to redox characteristics on methane and short-chain fatty acids in anaerobic digestion of chicken manure

Fulvic acids (FAs) is formed during the bioconversion of organic matter (OM) to biogas during anaerobic digestion (AD) and has a complex structure and redox function. However, the evolutionary mechanisms of FAs during AD and its interactions with acid and methane production have not been sufficiently investigated, especially at different stages of AD. Intermittent AD experiments by chicken manure and rice husk showed significant structural changes and reduced aromatization of FAs (e.g., O-H stretch6, 14.10-0%; SR, 0.22-0.60). The electron donating capacity (EDC) [9.76-45.39 μmole-/(g C)] and electron accepting capacity (EAC) [2.55-5.20 μmole-/(g C)] of FAs showed a tendency of decreasing and then increasing, and FAs had a stronger electron transfer capacity (ETC) in the methanogenic stage. Correlation analysis showed that the EDC of FAs was influenced by their own structure (C-O stretch2, C-H bend1, C-H bend4, and N-H bend) and also had an inhibitory effect on propionic production, which further inhibited acetic production. The EAC of FAs was affected by molecular weight and had a promoting effect on methane production. Structural equation modelling identified three possible pathways for AD. The C-O stretch2 structure of FAs alone inhibits the production of propionic. In addition, pH can directly affect the EDC of FAs. This study provides a theoretical basis for the structural and functional evolution of FAs in AD of chicken manure on the mechanism of methane production.

Effects of zero-valent iron and magnetite on ethanol and lactic acid production in the anaerobic fermentation of food waste

With the increasing global concern about food waste management, finding efficient ways to convert it into valuable products is crucial. The addition of zero-valent iron and magnetite to enhance ethanol and lactic acid fermentation yields from food waste emerges as a potential solution. This study compared the effects of 50-nm and 500-nm particle sizes of zero-valent iron and magnetite on ethanol and lactic acid fermentation and analyzed the mechanism of action from the perspective of organic matter material transformation and microbiology. The experimental results showed that 500-nm particle size magnetite and zero-valent iron could promote the hydrolysis of polysaccharides and proteins. 500-nm particle size magnetite could increase ethanol production (1.4-fold of the control), while 500-nm particle size zero-valent iron could increase lactic acid production (2.8-fold of the control). Metagenomic analysis showed that 500-nm magnetite increased the abundance of genes for amino acid metabolic functions, while 500-nm zero-valent iron increased the abundance of glycoside hydrolase genes (1.3-fold of the control). It's worth noting that while these findings are promising, they are based on controlled experimental conditions, and real-world applications may vary. his research not only offers a novel approach to augmenting anaerobic fermentation yields but also contributes to sustainable food waste management practices, potentially reducing environmental impacts and creating valuable products.

Fenton oxidation treatment of oxytetracycline fermentation residues: Harmless performance and bioresource properties

The pharmaceutical factories of oxytetracycline (OTC) massively produce OTC fermentation residues (OFRs). The high content of residual OTC and antibiotic resistance genes in OFRs must to be considered and controlled at an acceptable level. This study therefore investigated the applicability of Fenton oxidation in OTC degradation and resistant gene inactivation of OFRs. The results revealed that Fe²⁺ as catalyzer could very rapidly activate H₂O₂ to produce HO^•, leading to instantaneous degradation of OTC. The optimum conditions for OTC removal were 60 mM H₂O₂ and 140 mg/L Fe²⁺ under pH 7. After Fenton oxidation treatment, the release of water-soluble polysaccharides, NO₃-N, and PO₄-P was enhanced, whereas for proteins and NH₃-N were reduced. Three soluble fluorescence components (humic, tryptophan-like, and humic acid-like substances) were identified through fluorescence spectra with parallel factor analysis, and their reduction exceeded 50% after Fenton oxidation. There were twelve intermediates and three degradation pathways of OTC in OFRs during Fenton process. According to toxicity prediction, the comprehensive toxicity of OTC in OFRs was alleviated via Fenton oxidation treatment. In addition, Fenton oxidation showed the ability to reduce antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements, and even tetO, tetG, intI1, and intI2 were eliminated completely. These results suggested that Fenton oxidation treatment could be an efficient strategy for removing OTC and resistance genes in OFRs.

Subcritical water pretreatment enhanced methane-rich biogas production from the anaerobic digestion of brewer's spent grains

ABSTRACTThis study evaluated the effectiveness of a semi-continuous flow-through subcritical water hydrolysis (SWH) pretreatment of brewer's spent grains (BSG) for subsequent application in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process. BSG pretreatment was conducted at 160 °C and 15 MPa with a flow rate of 10 mL water min-1 and 15 g water g-1 BSG. The results revealed that SWH attacked the hemicellulose structure, releasing arabinose (46.54 mg g-1) and xylose (39.90 mg g-1) sugars, and proteins (34.89 mg g-1). The start-up of anaerobic reactors using pretreated BSG (747.71 L CH4 kg-1 TVS) increased the methane yield compared with the reactor without pretreatment (53.21 L CH4 kg-1 TVS). For the process with pretreatment, the generation of electricity (134 kWh t-1 BSG) and heat (604 MJ t-1) are responsible for the mitigation of 43.90 kg CO2 eq t-1 BSG. The adoption of SWH as an eco-friendly pretreatment of biomass for AD could be a technological route to increase methane-rich biogas and bioenergy production, supporting the circular economy transition by reducing the carbon footprint of the beer industry.

Enhancing methane production in anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and food waste by regulating organic loading rate

This study presented mechanistic insights into the long-term effects of stepwise-increasing organic loading rates (OLRs) on anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of sewage sludge and food waste. The maximum methane (CH₄) yield of 500.0 ± 10.5 mL CH₄/g VS_fed was achieved at medium OLR of 3.5 g VS/L/d. This excellent performance was associated with the high hydrolysis efficiency (78.4%), three-fold enhancement in the acidogenesis enzyme activity, and 87.0% enhanced methanogen activity. Soluble intermediates (carbohydrates and proteins) were largely degraded (>98.5%), especially tyrosine-like and tryptophan-like aromatic proteins. The particulates were effectively decomposed from macromolecules to micromolecules, and the crystallinity of cellulosic substances decreased by 24.5%. The newly-shaped combined syntrophic acetate oxidation-hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway dominated enhanced CH₄ production. Energy balance analysis based on medium OLR demonstrated the high energy recovery potential in full-scale AcoD. These findings suggest the optimal medium OLR can facilitate the bioconversion of organics to CH₄ through a new metabolic pathway.

Sulfur containing mixed wastes in anaerobic processing by new immobilized synthetic consortia

Methanogenic biotransformation of unusual substrates (sulfur (S)-containing wastes: non-purified vacuum gas oil, straight-run gasoline fraction (Naphtha), gas condensate, and straight-run diesel fraction) coming from oil industry after their oxidative desulfurization was investigated. Nitrogen-containing wastes (hydrolysates of chicken manure and Chlorella vulgaris biomass) were added as co-substrates to mixture with oil industry wastes. The 100 % conversion of S-organic compounds to inorganic sulfide accumulated in the reaction liquid medium was achieved with simultaneous production of biogas containing high methane percent (greater than 70 %). Polishing of effluents from methane tank was carried out by denitrifying oxidation of ammonium (DEAMOX). The high process efficiency was due to use of original immobilized artificial consortia at the stage of methanogenesis and DEAMOX. This study reveals the real potential in the processing of very complex mixtures of large-scale wastes, usually inhibiting methanogenesis, by developing biocatalysts based on synthetic biology approaches.

Effects of digestion duration on energy efficiency, compost quality, and carbon flow during solid state anaerobic digestion and composting hybrid process

This study investigated the effects of anaerobic digestion duration on methane yield, net energy production, and humification of compost during solid state anaerobic digestion (SSAD) and composting hybrid process for food waste treatment. Carbon flow and balance were used to evaluate organic methanation and humification inclination of carbon in the whole SSAD and aerobic composting system. Results showed that SSAD for 15 (AD-15) and 21 days (AD-21) could increase net energy production and degraded organic matter contained in the mixtures to achieve high biological stability. The cumulative net energy production between the AD-15 and AD-21 treatments was not significantly different, which was 8.3% higher than that in SSAD for 30 days (AD-30). Furthermore, digestate (AD-15 and AD-21) composting for 3 days reached maturity and absence of phytotoxic substances. Carbon fixed into humus of the AD-21 treatment (11.6%) was not significantly different from that of AD-15 (12.0%). However, the total amount of carbon fixed into compost in AD-15 was 6.6% higher than that in AD-21. Moreover, the CO₂ -C loss of the AD-15 treatment (22.9%) was slightly higher than that of AD-21 (20.6%). Thus, AD-21 treatment achieved the most effective use of carbon during SSAD and composting hybrid process for food waste treatment. These results could provide valuable insights for the effective management of food waste in practice.

Energy balance assessment on chicken manure for biogas production in Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaïr of Morocco

Chicken manure management has grabbed significant attention in Morocco due to the increasing demand on chicken and eggs. Bioconversion of chicken manure to biogas could reduce the chicken manure amount as well as generate clean energy. To evaluate the feasibility of converting chicken manure to biogas in terms of energy gain, the energy balance of the chicken manure for biogas production in the region of Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaïr of Morocco has been investigated. The result showed that there was an energy gain of 1350 MJ for per tonne of dry chicken manure was converted to biogas. The energy gain increased to 3996 MJ/tonne of dry chicken manure when the wheat straw was added to co-digest with chicken manure. With consideration of converting the obtained biogas for electricity generation, there was extra electricity for sale after subtracting the electricity consumed inside the poultry industry. Comparing with co-firing, pyrolysis, and gasification, chicken manure anaerobic digestion was superior in terms of energy gain.
