Effect of biochar produced from sewage sludge on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) growth, soil chemical properties and heavy metal concentrations

Biochar with KMnO4-hematite modification promoted foxtail millet growth by alleviating soil Cd and Zn biotoxicity

The excessive accumulation of Cd and Zn in soil poisons crops and threatens food safety. In this study, KMnO4-hematite modified biochar (MnFeB) was developed and applied to remediate weakly alkaline Cd-Zn contaminated soil, and the heavy metal immobilization effect, plant growth, and metal ion uptake of foxtail millet were studied. MnFeB application reduced the phytotoxicity of soil heavy metals; bioavailable acid-soluble Cd and Zn were reduced by 57.79% and 35.64%, respectively, whereas stable, non-bioavailable, residual Cd and Zn increased by 96.44% and 32.08%, respectively. The chlorophyll and total protein contents and the superoxide dismutase (SOD)activity were enhanced, whereas proline, malondialdehyde, the H2O2 content, glutathione reductase (GR), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT) activities were reduced. Accordingly, the expressions of GR, APX, and CAT were downregulated, whereas the expression of MnSOD was upregulated. In addition, MnFeB promoted the net photosynthetic rate and growth of foxtail millet plants. Furthermore, MnFeB reduced the levels of Cd and Zn in the stems, leaves, and grains, decreased the bioconcentration factor of Cd and Zn in shoots, and weakened the translocation of Cd and Zn from roots to shoots. Precipitation, complexation, oxidation-reduction, ion exchange, and π-π stacking interaction were the main Cd and Zn immobilization mechanisms, and MnFeB reduced the soil bacterial community diversity and the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Planctomycetota. This study provides a feasible and effective remediation material for Cd- and Zn-contaminated soils.

An assessment of nanotechnology-based interventions for cleaning up toxic heavy metal/metalloid-contaminated agroecosystems: Potentials and issues

Heavy metals (HMs) are among the most dangerous environmental variables for a variety of life forms, including crops. Accumulation of HMs in consumables and their subsequent transmission to the food web are serious concerns for scientific communities and policy makers. The function of essential plant cellular macromolecules is substantially hampered by HMs, which eventually have a detrimental effect on agricultural yield. Among these HMs, three were considered, i.e., arsenic, cadmium, and chromium, in this review, from agro-ecosystem perspective. Compared with conventional plant growth regulators, the use of nanoparticles (NPs) is a relatively recent, successful, and promising method among the many methods employed to address or alleviate the toxicity of HMs. The ability of NPs to reduce HM mobility in soil, reduce HM availability, enhance the ability of the apoplastic barrier to prevent HM translocation inside the plant, strengthen the plant's antioxidant system by significantly enhancing the activities of many enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants, and increase the generation of specialized metabolites together support the effectiveness of NPs as stress relievers. In this review article, to assess the efficacy of various NP types in ameliorating HM toxicity in plants, we adopted a 'fusion approach', in which a machine learning-based analysis was used to systematically highlight current research trends based on which an extensive literature survey is planned. A holistic assessment of HMs and NMs was subsequently carried out to highlight the future course of action(s).

Enhancing sustainable crop cultivation: The impact of renewable soil amendments and digestate fertilizer on crop growth and nutrient composition

Utilizing digestate as a fertilizer enhances soil nutrient content, improves fertility, and minimizes nutrient runoff, mitigating water pollution risks. This alternative approach replaces commercial fertilizers, thereby reducing their environmental impact and lowering greenhouse gas emissions associated with fertilizer production and landfilling. Herein, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of various soil amendments, including carbon fractions from waste materials (biochar, compost, and cocopeat), and food waste anaerobic digestate application methods on tomato plant growth (Solanum lycopersicum) and soil fertility. The results suggested that incorporating soil amendments (biochar, compost, and cocopeat) into the potting mix alongside digestate application significantly enhances crop yields, with increases ranging from 12.8 to 17.3% compared to treatments without digestate. Moreover, the combination of soil-biochar amendment and digestate application suggested notable improvements in nitrogen levels by 20.3% and phosphorus levels by 14%, surpassing the performance of the those without digestate. Microbial analysis revealed that the soil-biochar amendment significantly enhanced biological nitrification processes, leading to higher nitrogen levels compared to soil-compost and soil-cocopeat amendments, suggesting potential nitrogen availability enhancement within the rhizosphere's ecological system. Chlorophyll content analysis suggested a significant 6.91% increase with biochar and digestate inclusion in the soil, compared to the treatments without digestate. These findings underscore the substantial potential of crop cultivation using soil-biochar amendments in conjunction with organic fertilization through food waste anaerobic digestate, establishing a waste-to-food recycling system.

Association of time-varying sleep duration and cognitive function with mortality in the elderly: a 12-year community-based cohort study

BACKGROUND

Sleeping problems and cognitive impairment are common in elders. Baseline sleep duration and cognitive status are predictors of mortality. But few studies have explored whether longitudinal changes in sleep duration and cognitive function are related to mortality in older adults. The present study investigated the time-varying relationships of sleep duration and cognitive function with subsequent mortality among community-dwelling elders by using 12 years of repeated-measure data.

METHODS

Taichung Community Health Study for Elders (TCHS-E) is a retrospective, population-based cohort that started in 2009 (wave 1) with a total of 912 elders aged 65 years or above. Follow up was conducted in 2010 (wave 2), 2018 (wave 3), and 2020 (wave 4). Sleep duration and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) forms were executed at baseline and three visits during follow-up. Time-varying Cox proportional hazards regression estimated adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of mortality with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

RESULTS

During about 12 years (9,396 person-years) follow-up, 329 deaths from all causes were documented, including 102 deaths due to expanded cardiovascular disease (CVD). In the multivariable-adjusted, time-varying Cox proportional hazard model, the adjusted HR values of all-cause mortality were 1.47 (1.02-2.12) for sleep duration > 9 h/day (vs. 7 h/day) and 1.81 (1.26-2.59) for MMSE < 27 (vs. 30). The adjusted HR values of the expanded CVD mortality were 2.91 (1.24-6.83) for MMSE of 29; 2.69 (1.20-6.05) for MMSE of 27-28; and 4.32 (95% CI: 1.92-9.74) for MMSE < 27. The dose-dependent relationship was significant (p < 0.001). The combinations of sleep duration longer than 9 h/day and MMSE < 27 were linked with the highest risks for expanded CVD and all-cause mortality.

CONCLUSIONS

Long sleep duration and low cognitive function were jointly and independently linked with higher risk of mortality in elders residing in community.

High-carbon wood ash biochar for mine tailings restoration: A field assessment of planted tree performance and metals uptake

Unique properties of biochar render it appealing for revegetating and decontaminating historic, barren, and chemically complex mine tailings. Bottom ash from bioenergy facilities can contain high levels of charcoal residue, and thus qualify as a type of biochar; the wide availability of this material at low cost makes it of particular interest in the context of tailings remediation. Nevertheless, bottom ash is variable and often contains residual toxic metal/loids that could be phytoabsorbed into plant tissues. We implemented a replicated field trial on historic contaminated metal mine tailings in Northern Ontario (Canada) over a range of high‑carbon wood ash biochar (HCWAB) dosages (0-30 t/ha) to evaluate tree and substrate responses. Sapling survivorship and aboveground biomass growth were quantified over a 4-year period; substrate chemical parameters were measured using acid-digestion and ICP-MS, as well as ion exchange resin probes. To assess elemental composition of sapling tissues, we used electron probe microanalysis combined with laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) on intact samples across the range of dosages applied. Survival and growth of saplings peaked at mid-range ash dosages of 3-6 t/ha. Similarly, substrate ion availability of P, K, and Zn were stable at lower dosages, but increased above 6 t/ha. The trace amounts of toxic metal/loids of concern measured in wood ash (As, Cd, Cu, and Pb) did not result in significantly increased sapling tissue concentrations at low to moderate dosages, but in some cases tissue contaminant levels were elevated at the highest dosage examined (30 t/ha). Our findings highlight the potential for high‑carbon wood ash biochar to be used for metal mine restoration at low to moderate dosages.

Dynamics of potassium released from sewage sludge biochar fertilizers in soil

The solid product of sewage sludge (SS) pyrolysis, called SS biochar (SSB), is rich in carbon and nutrients, such as phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), and zinc (Zn). However, SSB has a low potassium (K) concentration because it is released with water during the final stage of sewage treatment. The enrichment of SSB with mineral sources of K can solve the low supply of K in SSB and produce an organomineral fertilizer with a slow release of K. However, the dynamics of K release from these enriched fertilizers in different soil types remain unclear. This study investigated the dynamics of K release from biochar-based fertilizer (BBF) in the form of pellets and granules in two soil types (clayey and sandy) and natural silica. An incubation experiment was conducted for 60 days, and replicates were evaluated at prescribed time intervals. After the incubation period, the levels of K available in the solid fraction were determined, and the dynamics of K release were evaluated using four nonlinear regression models. BBFs achieved a slower release of K than the mineral KCl. The dynamics of K release were affected by the physical form of BBF, such that the pelleted BBF exhibited the slowest K release. Furthermore, regarding the concentration detected in the solid phase, the total released was highest in clayey soil, followed by sandy soil and natural silica. The enriched BBFs reduced K release throughout the experimental period, behaving as slow-release fertilizers with the potential to optimize K uptake by plants throughout the growth cycle. Further studies are required to evaluate K leaching and retention in the soil profile when biochar-based fertilizers are applied.

Biogeochemical behaviour and toxicology of chromium in the soil-water-human nexus: A review

Chromium (Cr) affects human health if it accumulates in organs to elevated concentrations. The toxicity risk of Cr in the ecosphere depends upon the dominant Cr species and their bioavailability in the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. However, the soil-water-human nexus that controls the biogeochemical behaviour of Cr and its potential toxicity is not fully understood. This paper synthesizes information on different dimensions of Cr ecotoxicological hazards in the soil and water and their subsequent effects on human health. The various routes of environmental exposure of Cr to humans and other organisms are also discussed. Human exposure to Cr(VI) causes both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects via complicated reactions that include oxidative stress, chromosomal and DNA damage, and mutagenesis. Chromium (VI) inhalation can cause lung cancer; however, incidences of other types of cancer following Cr(VI) exposure are low but probable. The non-carcinogenic health consequences of Cr(VI) exposure are primarily respiratory and cutaneous. Research on the biogeochemical behaviour of Cr and its toxicological hazards on human and other biological routes is therefore urgently needed to develop a holistic approach to understanding the soil-water-human nexus that controls the toxicological hazards of Cr and its detoxification.

Antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes in sewage sludge survive during aerobic composting

Municipal sewage sludge has been generated in increasing amounts with the acceleration of urbanization and economic development. The nutrient rich sewage sludge can be recycled by composting that has a great potential to produce stabilized organic fertilizer and substrate for plant cultivation. However, little is known about the metals, pathogens and antibiotic resistance transfer risks involved in applying the composted sludge in agriculture. We studied changes in and relationships between heavy metal contents, microbial communities, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), heavy metal resistance genes (HMRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in aerobic composting of sewage sludge. The contents of most of the analyzed heavy metals were not lower after composting. The bacterial α-diversity was lower, and the community composition was different after composting. Firmicutes were enriched, and Proteobacteria and potential pathogens in the genera Arcobacter and Acinetobacter were depleted in the composted sludge. The differences in bacteria were possibly due to the high temperature phase during the composting which was likely to affect temperature-sensitive bacteria. The number of detected ARGs, HMRGs and MGEs was lower, and the relative abundances of several resistance genes were lower after composting. However, the abundance of seven ARGs and six HMRGs remained on the same level after composting. Co-occurrence analysis of bacterial taxa and the genes suggested that the ARGs may spread via horizontal gene transfer during composting. In summary, even though aerobic composting is effective for managing sewage sludge and to decrease the relative abundance of potential pathogens, ARGs and HMRGs, it might include a potential risk for the dissemination of ARGs in the environment.

A comprehensive assessment of heavy metal(loid) contamination in leafy vegetables grown in two mining areas in Yunnan, China-a focus on bioaccumulation of cadmium in Malabar spinach

Contamination of leafy vegetables grown in heavy metal(loid)-polluted mining areas pose serious health risks. This study aimed to explore the heavy metal(loid) contamination of leafy vegetables near two mining areas, by collecting samples from 14 different leafy vegetable species in Yunnan Province, China. The lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and copper (Cu) contents of the samples were determined, and risks to human health were calculated using the hazard quotient and hazard index (HI). Moreover, Malabar spinach was identified as a leafy vegetable that exhibits low accumulation of heavy metal(loid)s. The accumulation capacity of different Malabar spinach varieties was verified, and a Cd soil safety threshold was determined using a pot experiment. Overall, Pb and Cd were the main soil and vegetable contaminants found in both study sites. The HI values for all leafy vegetables, apart from Malabar spinach, were greater than 1, indicating the presence of risks to human health; moreover, the health risks were greater for children than adults. The Malabar spinach pot experiment results showed that only some Cd forms exceeded China's maximum permissible standards. Furthermore, Malabar spinach varieties A (instant Malabar spinach), C (extra-large leaf green vine Malabar spinach), and F (large leaf Malabar spinach) displayed the lowest Cd accumulation. We calculated Cd total and bioavailable soil safety thresholds of 4.75 and 0.77 mg kg-1, respectively. However, further research is required to validate soil heavy metal safety thresholds for different vegetables. Ultimately, the heavy metal(loid) contamination of leafy vegetables described here was more serious than anticipated. Finally, the results of this study can inform residents living near these mining areas of a low-risk leafy vegetable, which will reduce the harm caused by heavy metal(loid) contamination in the area.

Biochar derived from hydrolysis of sewage sludge influences soil properties and heavy metals distributed in the soil

Sewage sludge contains a large number of nutrients and dangerous substances, when sludge was processed into sludge hydrochar that was added to the soil, which not only solve the problem of sludge disposal, but also amend the soil and fix pollutants in the soil. However, it was lack of report on the effect of the sludge hydrochar on soil compositions and soil microorganism community structures until now. In the present study, the hydrothermal carbonization method is used to prepare hydrochar from sewage sludge at temperatures of 180 ℃ and 240 ℃ at durations of 6 h and 15 h in this paper. The effects of the prepared sludge hydrochar on soil-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM), the content of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and NO₃^--N in soil, and the community structure of soil bacteria and fungi were evaluated. Furthermore, the change rules in heavy metal speciation in soils treated with sludge hydrochar were investigated. With the increase in the preparation temperature and dosage of sludge hydrochar, the main components of DOM changed from soluble microbial byproducts to fulvic acid-like and humic acid-like fractions through UV and fluorescence characterization. The sludge hydrochar prepared at low temperature could significantly increase the contents of TDN and NO₃^--N in the soil. Affected by sludge hydrochar, the dominant phylum of the bacterial community changed from Proteobacteria to Actinobacteria, and the dominant phylum in the fungal community did not change, but its relative abundance increased. Finally, the sludge hydrochar obtained when the carbonization time was 15 h was more beneficial to reduce the total amount and available content of heavy metals in the soil. The study provides a basis for sludge hydrochar application for the soil amendment.

Fate and health risk assessment of heavy metals in Brassica chinensis L. (pak-choi) and soil amended by sludge-based biochar

Biochar is widely used in agriculture to efficiently solve the problem of sludge. In this study, sludge-based biochar (referred to as BC1, BC2, and BC3) was prepared by mixing sludge with FeCl₃, Na₂SiO₃, and Ca (H₂PO₄)₂, respectively. Then, it was mixed with fresh soil to plant Brassica chinensis L. The analysis of the effects of the three biochar types showed that all of them were beneficial to the growth of Brassica chinensis L. We added the biochar to the soil and found that the concentration of heavy metals did not exceed the recommended threshold. Additionally, the aboveground part of Brassica chinensis L. met the standard requirement for food safety (GB 2761-2017). Notably, BC3 stood out with the best effect on the growth of Brassica chinensis L. and resulted in the improvement of the physical and chemical properties of soil such as ammonium nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium (BC3 was followed by BC2 and BC1). BC3 could efficiently inhibit the migration of heavy metals, thereby reducing the overall heavy metal pollution level and ameliorating the soil nutrients. BC3 could increase the organic carbon by 258.92%, available phosphorus by 234.45%, and available potassium by 37.12% compared with the CK group. The THQ and TTHQ estimates of Brassica chinensis L. were lower than one, indicating that the health risk of heavy metal intake was not prominent. Additionally, the application of the proposed biochar could reduce the form of F1 (acid extracted state) and increase the form of F4 (residue state) in soil. Overall, we conclude that the application of the proposed biochar can promote the root absorption of heavy metals and inhibit the migration of heavy metals.

Role of biochar-based free radicals in immobilization and speciation of metals in the contaminated soil-plant environment

The structure of biochar produced at various pyrolysis temperatures influences metal geochemical behavior. Here, the impact of wheat straw-derived biochar (300, 500, and 700 °C) on the immobilization and transformation of metals in the contaminated soil-plant system was assessed. The findings of the sequential extraction revealed that biochar additives had a substantial influence on the speciation of Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the contaminated soil. The lowest F1 (exchangeable and soluble fraction) + F2 (carbonate fraction) accounted for Cr (44%) in WB-300, Ni (43.87%) in WB-500, Pb (43.79%), and Zn (49.78%) in WB-700 with applied amendments of their total amounts. The characterization results indicated that high pyrolysis temperatures (300-700 °C) increased the carbon-containing groups with the potential to adsorb metals from the soil-plant environment. The bioconcentration and translocation factors (BCF and TF) were less than 1, indicating that metal concentration was restricted to maize roots and translocation to shoots. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) intracellularly influence metal interactions with plants. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was performed to determine hydroxyl radical generation (•OH) in plant segments to assess the dominance of free radicals (FRs). Consequently, the formation of •OH significantly depends on the pyrolysis temperature and the interaction with a contaminated soil-plant environment. Thus, metal transformation can be effectively decreased in the soil-plant environment by applying WB amendments.

Effects of Co-Digestion Sludge Application on Soil Productivity

Anaerobic digestion and agricultural use of sewage sludge are effective methods to treat and dispose of sewage sludge, respectively. Then, the anaerobic digested sewage sludge is applied in agricultural land and the improvement of soil properties can be expected. In this study, with the purpose of evaluating the potential of co-digestion sludge for agricultural use, plot experiments with two vegetable species (radish and Chinese cabbage) and three application dosages were carried out in a short term of six months. Focus was on soil physical properties, soil nutrient change and plant growth responses during the whole process. Results showed that application of co-digestion sludge had little effect on soil physical properties, including the bulk density, porosity, capillary porosity and non-capillary porosity. However, after the application of co-digestion sludge, the maximum increase in content of organic matter, total nitrogen, hydrolysable nitrogen, total phosphorus and available phosphorus in soil reached 51%, 125%, 212%, 15% and 87%, respectively, which supplied the available nutrients quickly and continuously. The application of co-digestion sludge promoted the growth of radish and Chinese cabbage, which was observed through increase of the leaf, root biomass and plants height. Consequently, co-digestion sludge has a good application prospect for improving soil productivity as fertilizer.

Feasibility of Biochar Derived from Sewage Sludge to Promote Sustainable Agriculture and Mitigate GHG Emissions-A Review

Sewage sludge (SS) has been connected to a variety of global environmental problems. Assessing the risk of various disposal techniques can be quite useful in recommending appropriate management. The preparation of sewage sludge biochar (SSB) and its impacts on soil characteristics, plant health, nutrient leaching, and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) are critically reviewed in this study. Comparing the features of SSB obtained at various pyrolysis temperatures revealed changes in its elemental content. Lower hydrogen/carbon ratios in SSB generated at higher pyrolysis temperatures point to the existence of more aromatic carbon molecules. Additionally, the preparation of SSB has an increased ash content, a lower yield, and a higher surface area as a result of the rise in pyrolysis temperature. The worldwide potential of SS output and CO₂-equivalent emissions in 2050 were predicted as factors of global population and common disposal management in order to create a futuristic strategy and cope with the quantity of abundant global SS. According to estimations, the worldwide SS output and associated CO₂-eq emissions were around 115 million tons dry solid (Mt DS) and 14,139 teragrams (Tg), respectively, in 2020. This quantity will rise to about 138 Mt DS sewage sludge and 16985 Tg CO₂-eq emissions in 2050, a 20% increase. In this regard, developing and populous countries may support economic growth by utilizing low-cost methods for producing biochar and employing it in local agriculture. To completely comprehend the benefits and drawbacks of SSB as a soil supplement, further study on long-term field applications of SSB is required.

Effects of composite environmental materials on the passivation and biochemical effectiveness of Pb and Cd in soil: Analyses at the ex-planta of the Pak-choi root and leave

Passivation of soil heavy metals using environmental materials is an important method or important in situ remediation measure. There are more studies on inorganic environmental materials for heavy metal passivation, but not enough studies on organic and their composite environmental materials with inorganic ones. In order to reveal the passivation effect of coal-based ammoniated humic acid (CAHA), biochemical humic acid (BHA), biochar (BC) and other organic types and inorganic environmental materials such as zeolites (ZL) on soil heavy metals and their biological effectiveness. The microstructures of these materials were analyzed by Scanning electron microscope (SEM). The main components of the environmental materials were analyzed by Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction spectrum (XRD) to elucidate the mechanism of passivation of heavy metals in soil by these environmental materials. The study was conducted to investigate the effects of different types of environmental materials and their combinations on the passivation effect and biological effectiveness of Pb and Cd complex contamination in soil by means of soil incubation and pot experiments using single-factor and multifactor multilevel orthogonal experimental designs. Soil incubation experiments proved that the effective state of soil Pb and Cd in T₇ was reduced by 13.40% and 11.07%, respectively. The extreme difference analysis determined the optimized formulation of soil lead and cadmium passivation as BHA: CAHA: BC: ZL = 3.5:5:20:10. The pot experiment proved that the application of composite environmental materials led to the reduction of lead and cadmium content and increase of biomass of Pak-choi, and the optimal dosage of optimized composite environmental materials was 23.1 g/kg.

Effects of solid waste-based soil conditioner and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on crop productivity and heavy metal distribution in foxtail millet (Setaria italica)

Shanxi is a large coal-producing province, and it also produces a lot of solid waste. Solid waste can leach heavy metals, which can harm soil and affect food security at the beginning of the food chain. To investigate the impacts of solid waste-based soil conditioner (SWSC) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on millet safety and crop production, a field experiment with foxtail millet (Setaria italica) was conducted in Tunliu. The results of this study demonstrate that SWSC + AMF, SWSC and AMF can increase millet yield by 28.0%, 27.1% and 19.5%, respectively, compared with CK. This is mainly due to increased mycorrhizal infection. Besides, the pollution index (P_i) and the Nemerow-integrated pollution index (P_N) of the soil with SWSC and AMF were both below 0.7, indicating safe pollution levels. The application of AMF and SWSC inhibits plants from absorbing heavy metals from the soil and reduces the TF_root/soil of the millet. SWSC + AMF application inhibited the transfer of heavy metals from the roots to the upper part of the ground and reduced the TF_shoot/root of the millet. The TF_grain/soil of the millet was below 1. The HQ and HI of the millet grains did not exceed 1, indicating the absence of a potential health risk. Therefore, SWSC combined with AMF is applicable for millet production in Tunliu, and the combined treatment can decrease heavy metal phytoavailability and post-harvest transfer risks. This work provides a way to utilize solid waste while also improving millet yields in dry farming. Based on the review, we suggested future researches to better understand the mechanisms of SWSC + AMF long-term application to promote awareness on its role over time through alterations in its surface chemistry, soil microbial community and environmental implications.

Metabolic Disturbances Induced by Sleep Restriction as Potential Triggers for Alzheimer's Disease

Sleep has a major role in learning, memory consolidation, and metabolic function. Although it is known that sleep restriction increases the accumulation of amyloid β peptide (Aβ) and the risk to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD), the mechanism behind these effects remains unknown. In this review, we discuss how chronic sleep restriction induces metabolic and cognitive impairments that could result in the development of AD in late life. Here, we integrate evidence regarding mechanisms whereby metabolic signaling becomes disturbed after short or chronic sleep restriction in the context of cognitive impairment, particularly in the accumulation of Aβ in the brain. We also discuss the role of the blood-brain barrier in sleep restriction with an emphasis on the transport of metabolic signals into the brain and Aβ clearance. This review presents the unexplored possibility that the alteration of peripheral metabolic signals induced by sleep restriction, especially insulin resistance, is responsible for cognitive deficit and, subsequently, implicated in AD development.
