Improved catalytic performance of ZnO via coupling with CoFe2O4 and carbon nanotubes: A new, photocatalysis-mediated peroxymonosulfate activation system, applied towards Cefixime degradation

Encapsulation of Cu-modified SnO2 yolk-shell in V2O5-amalgamated wrinkled g-C3N4 lamella for boosting antibiotic photodegradation

The remarkable application of tin oxide in various domains is indebted to its photoelectronic merits. However, significant efforts to discover its photocatalytic potential were restricted through arduous challenges, which were the amelioration of light-harvesting and -utilizing. In fact, the uncommon light absorption energy has drawn veil over the brilliance of astounding oxidation potential, which is much more than that of TiO2. Herein, our attention was focused on the taking advantages of self-template structure for simultaneously enjoying the two sides of photoelectronic justification as well as the S-step system for eminent charge dissociation. In this regard, the optimized Cu-modified SnO2 yolk-shell ((5)YS-CuSnO) spheres were engineered through the copper modulation into glycerate-assisted metal-organic structure. As a result, the exceptional light-harvesting was achieved through desirable defects and oxygen vacancy resulted from Cu-doping, and also efficient light-utilization was obtained by the multi-scattering/reflection effect resulted from multi-shell configuration. After the effectual incorporation (40 wt⁒) of (5)YS-CuSnO was encapsulated into the V2O5-decorated wrinkled g-C3N4 lamella (VO-WCN), the dual S-step VO-WCN@(5)YS-CuSnO introduced unprecedented levofloxacin (LFC) decontamination performance, which was kinetically 5.2 and 30.2-times greater than of the (5)YS-CuSnO and bare SnO2 yolk-shell. The conspicuous fulfillment of nanocomposite was manifested in the LFC mineralization, pharmaceutical effluent treatment within 360 min, and successive cycling reactions. The fusion of the extraordinary architecture of YS-CuSnO with S-Step system not only initiates the facile and practical photocatalytic exploitation, but shade light on some undeveloped side of tin oxide.

Advances on carbon nanomaterials and their applications in medical diagnosis and drug delivery

Carbon nanomaterials are indispensable due to their unique properties of high electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and thermal stability, which makes them important nanomaterials in biomedical applications and waste management. Limitations of conventional nanomaterials, such as limited surface area, difficulty in fine tuning electrical or thermal properties and poor dispersibility, calls for the development of advanced nanomaterials to overcome such limitations. Commonly, carbon nanomaterials were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), laser ablation or arc discharge methods. The advancement in these techniques yielded monodispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and allows p-type and n-type doping to enhance its electrical and catalytic activities. The functionalized CNTs showed exceptional mechanical, electrical and thermal conductivity (3500-5000 W/mK) properties. On the other hand, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) exhibit strong photoluminescence properties with high quantum yield. Carbon nanohorns are another fascinating type of nanomaterial that exhibit a unique structure with high surface area and excellent adsorption properties. These carbon nanomaterials could improve waste management by adsorbing pollutants from water and soil, enabling precise environmental monitoring, while enhancing wastewater treatment and drug delivery systems. Herein, we have discussed the potentials of all these carbon nanomaterials in the context of innovative waste management solutions, fostering cleaner environments and healthier ecosystems for diverse biomedical applications such as biosensing, drug delivery, and environmental monitoring.

Radiation-induced preparation of nanoscale CoO@graphene oxide for activating peroxymonosulfate to degrade emerging organic pollutants

In this study, ionizing radiation was used to induce the in-situ formation of highly dispersed nanosized cobalt oxide on the surface of graphene oxide (R-Co-GO), which was highly effective for activating PMS to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). R-Co-GO had the highest catalytic activity when 150 μL cobalt chloride hexahydrate solution was used in the precursor, and the pseudo first-order kinetic constant of SMX degradation was 0.07 min-1 with high mineralization efficiency (63.1 %) and high PMS utilization efficiency. The sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt oxo were mainly responsible for SMX degradation. Mechanism analysis showed that cobalt active site dominated in PMS activation, which was responsible for the formation of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt oxo; while the carbon framework contributed to the formation of singlet oxygen. The R-Co-GO-150 had good catalytic activity and stability in five cycling experiments, in which SMX was completely degraded and the concentration of dissolved Co was below 0.1 mg/L. In addition, the R-Co-GO-150/PMS system could also degrade phenol, bisphenol A, atrazine and nitrobenzene effectively, confirming its wide applicability. This study provided a facile method to uniformly disperse the metal oxides on the surface of carbon materials, and an effective system for the removal of emerging organic pollutants from the actual wastewater.

Determination of low concentrations of glucose through colorimetric analysis using CoFe2O4 magnetic catalyst and SAT-3

Natural enzyme mimics have attracted attention as alternatives to natural peroxidases. Among these, magnetic nanoparticles, especially ferrites, have attracted attention because of their unique electronic and physical structures, which are expected to be applied in various fields, including high-frequency magnetic materials, biomaterials, gas sensors, and semiconductor photocatalysts. The structural properties of the synthesized catalysts were investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The prepared CoFe2O4 exhibited a spinel ferrite structure and formed a wood-flake-like bulk structure. In this study, magnetic CoFe2O4 was prepared using a precipitation method as a natural enzyme mimetic. CoFe2O4 showed excellent peroxidase-like activity, as demonstrated by the Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) and the maximum velocity (Vmax). The linear ranges of the calibration curves for H2O2 and glucose were in the range of 0-500 µM, and the detection limits were 1.83 and 5.91 µM, respectively. This analytical method was applied for the determination of glucose in human serum, and the results were satisfactory and consistent with certified values. The performance of this sensor was comparable to or superior to those of several other sensors commonly used for glucose analysis, indicating that its practical application is feasible.

Removal of metronidazole using a novel ZnO-CoFe2O4@Biochar heterostructure composite in an intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation system under visible light

The intimate coupling of photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) technology has received much attraction because of the advantages of both photocatalytic reaction and biological treatment. In this study, ZnO-CoFe2O4@BC (ZCFC) with p-n heterojunction was prepared and used in an ICPB system to degrade metronidazole (MNZ) wastewater. The microstructure, morphology, and optical behavior of heterojunctions in ZCFC were investigated using SEM, XRD, UV-vis, FTIR, and XPS techniques. The results showed that ZCFC inherited the advantages of bamboo biochar's large pore size, and its large pore structure could provide a habitat for bacterial colonization in ICPB, thus shortening the internal mass transfer distance. The degradation of MNZ and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by the ICPB system was 86.8% and 58.5%, respectively, which was superior to single photocatalysis (72.5% for MNZ and 43.8% for COD) and single biodegradation (23.5% for MNZ and 20.1% for COD). In ICPB, photocatalysis and biodegradation showed a synergistic effect in the removal of MNZ, and the order of the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to reduced toxicity of MNZ to the biofilm was •OH > h+ > O2•-. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed continuous evolution of biofilm structures in ICPB enriched a variety of functional species, among which the electroactive bacteria Alcaligenes and Brevundimonas played an important role in the degradation of MNZ. In this study, we investigated the possible mechanism of photocatalytic and microbial synergistic degradation of MNZ in the ICPB system and proposed a new technology for degrading antibiotic wastewater that combines the advantages of photocatalysis and biodegradation.

Kumquat peel-derived biochar to support zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) for enhancing peracetic acid activation to remove acetaminophen from aqueous solution

This study presents the synthesis of a novel composite catalyst, ZIF-67, doped on sodium bicarbonate-modified biochar derived from kumquat peels (ZIF-67@KSB3), for the enhanced activation of peracetic acid (PAA) in the degradation of acetaminophen (APAP) in aqueous solutions. The composite demonstrated a high degradation efficiency, achieving 94.3% elimination of APAP at an optimal condition of 200 mg L-1 catalyst dosage and 0.4 mM PAA concentration at pH 7. The degradation mechanism was elucidated, revealing that superoxide anion (O2•-) played a dominant role, while singlet oxygen (1O2) and alkoxyl radicals (R-O•) also contributed significantly. The degradation pathways of APAP were proposed based on LC-MS analyses and molecular electrostatic potential calculations, identifying three primary routes of transformation. Stability tests confirmed that the ZIF-67@KSB3 catalyst retained an 86% efficiency in APAP removal after five successive cycles, underscoring its durability and potential for application in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Cu/Co Bimetallic Carbon Catalyst as a Highly Efficient Promoter for Reactive Dyes Degradation with PMS

The synergistic effect between bimetallic catalysts has been confirmed as an effective method for activating persulfate (PMS). Therefore, we immobilized copper-cobalt on chitosan to prepare bimetallic carbon catalysts for PMS activation and degradation of reactive dyes. Experimental results demonstrate that the CuCo-CTs/PMS catalytic degradation system exhibits excellent degradation performance toward various types of reactive dyes (e.g., Ethyl violet, Chlortalidone, and Di chlorotriazine), with degradation rates reaching 90% within 30 min. CuCo-CTs exhibit high catalytic activity over a wide pH range of 3-11 at room temperature and under static conditions, degrading over 92% of RV5 within 60 min. ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and color changes in the dye solution confirm the effective degradation of RV5, with a degradation rate of 97.2% within 10 min. Additionally, CuCo-CTs demonstrate good stability and reusability, maintaining a degradation rate of 92.8% after eight cycles. Kinetic studies indicate that the degradation follows pseudo-first-order kinetics. Furthermore, based on the results of radical scavenging experiments, the catalytic degradation mechanism of the dye involves both radical and nonradical pathways, with 1O2 identified as the primary active species. This study provides insights and experimental evidence for the application of persulfate oxidation in the treatment of dyeing wastewater.

Tungsten-based nanocatalysts with different structures for visible light responsive photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A

Environmental pollution, such as water contamination, is a critical issue that must be absolutely addressed. Here, three different morphologies of tungsten-based photocatalysts (WO3 nanorods, WO3/WS2 nanobricks, WO3/WS2 nanorods) are made using a simple hydrothermal method by changing the solvents (H2O, DMF, aqueous HCl solution). The as-prepared nanocatalysts have excellent thermal stability, large porosity, and high hydrophilicity. The results show all materials have good photocatalytic activity in aqueous media, with WO3/WS2 nanorods (NRs) having the best activity in the photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA) under visible-light irradiation. This may originate from increased migration of charge carriers and effective prevention of electron‒hole recombination in WO3/WS2 NRs, whereby this photocatalyst is able to generate more reactive •OH and •O2- species, leading to greater photocatalytic activity. About 99.6% of BPA is photodegraded within 60 min when using 1.5 g/L WO3/WS2 NRs and 5.0 mg/L BPA at pH 7.0. Additionally, the optimal conditions (pH, catalyst dosage, initial BPA concentration) for WO3/WS2 NRs are also elaborately investigated. These rod-like heterostructures are expressed as potential catalysts with excellent photostability, efficient reusability, and highly active effectivity in different types of water. In particular, the removal efficiency of BPA by WO3/WS2 NRs reduces by only 1.5% after five recycling runs and even reaches 89.1% in contaminated lake water. This study provides promising insights for the nearly complete removal of BPA from wastewater or different water resources, which is advantageous to various applications in environmental remediation.

Advances in Biological Wastewater Treatment Processes: Focus on Low-Carbon Energy and Resource Recovery in Biorefinery Context

Advancements in biological wastewater treatment with sustainable and circularity approaches have a wide scope of application. Biological wastewater treatment is widely used to remove/recover organic pollutants and nutrients from a diverse wastewater spectrum. However, conventional biological processes face challenges, such as low efficiency, high energy consumption, and the generation of excess sludge. To overcome these limitations, integrated strategies that combine biological treatment with other physical, chemical, or biological methods have been developed and applied in recent years. This review emphasizes the recent advances in integrated strategies for biological wastewater treatment, focusing on their mechanisms, benefits, challenges, and prospects. The review also discusses the potential applications of integrated strategies for diverse wastewater treatment towards green energy and resource recovery, along with low-carbon fuel production. Biological treatment methods, viz., bioremediation, electro-coagulation, electro-flocculation, electro-Fenton, advanced oxidation, electro-oxidation, bioelectrochemical systems, and photo-remediation, are summarized with respect to non-genetically modified metabolic reactions. Different conducting materials (CMs) play a significant role in mass/charge transfer metabolic processes and aid in enhancing fermentation rates. Carbon, metal, and nano-based CMs hybridization in different processes provide favorable conditions to the fermentative biocatalyst and trigger their activity towards overcoming the limitations of the conventional process. The emerging field of nanotechnology provides novel additional opportunities to surmount the constraints of conventional process for enhanced waste remediation and resource valorization. Holistically, integrated strategies are promising alternatives for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of biological wastewater treatment while also contributing to the circular economy and environmental protection.

Antibiotic removal from synthetic and real aqueous matrices by peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes. A review of recent development

The widespread use of antibiotics for the treatment of bacteriological diseases causes their accumulation at low concentrations in natural waters. This gives health risks to animals and humans since it can increase the damage of the beneficial bacteria, the control of infectious diseases, and the resistance to bacterial infection. Potent oxidation methods are required to remove these pollutants from water because of their inefficient abatement in municipal wastewater treatment plants. Over the last three years in the period 2021-September 2023, powerful peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been developed to guaranty the effective removal of antibiotics in synthetic and real waters and wastewater. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of the different procedures proposed to activate PMS-producing strong oxidizing agents like sulfate radical (SO4•-), hydroxyl radical (•OH, radical superoxide ion (O2•-), and non-radical singlet oxygen (1O2) at different proportions depending on the experimental conditions. Iron, non-iron transition metals, biochar, and carbonaceous materials catalytic, UVC, photocatalytic, thermal, electrochemical, and other processes for PMS activation are summarized. The fundamentals and characteristics of these procedures are detailed remarking on their oxidation power to remove antibiotics, the influence of operating variables, the production and detection of radical and non-radical oxidizing agents, the effect of added inorganic anions, natural organic matter, and aqueous matrix, and the identification of by-products formed. Finally, the theoretical and experimental analysis of the change of solution toxicity during the PMS-based AOPs are described.

Zn-Doped MnCO3/CS Composite Photocatalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Decomposition of Organic Pollutants

Zn-doped MnCO3/carbon sphere (Zn-doped MnCO3/CS) composites were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal procedure. Among various samples (ZM-50, ZM-05, and ZMC-0), the ternary Zn-doped MnCO3/CS (ZMC-2) catalyst demonstrated excellent visible light-induced photocatalytic activity. This improvement comes from the Zn addition and the conductive CS, which facilitate electron movement and charge transport. The catalyst exhibited efficient degradation of methylene blue (MB) over a wide pH range, achieving a removal efficiency of 99.6% under visible light. Radical trapping experiments suggested that •OH and •O2- played essential roles in the mechanism of organic pollutant degradation. Moreover, the catalyst maintained good degradation performance after five cycles. This study offers valuable perspectives into the fabrication of carbon-based composites with promising photocatalytic activity.

Catalytic PMS oxidation universality of CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions at multiple application scenarios

The magnetic CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions were prepared by hydrothermal method, and the effect of different reaction temperature on the physicochemical properties and catalytic activity was investigated. The CuFe2O4/MnO2 heterojunctions prepared at 100 °C can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) at multiple application scenarios for degradation and mineralization of tetracycline, o-nitrophenol and ceftriaxone sodium under indoor light, visible light and dark condition. Additionally, the CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system showed high catalytic activity and anti-interference ability for degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants in natural water bodies and industrial wastewater. The TC removal efficiency in Qianhu Lake water, Ganjiang River water and tap water was about 88%, 92% and 89%, respectively. The CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system is also effective for actual pharmaceutical wastewater treatment with 77.9% of COD removal efficiency. Interestingly, the reactive species of CuFe2O4/MnO2-PMS system under visible light are different from those in dark condition, and the different catalytic mechanisms at multiple application scenarios were proposed. This work provides new insights into mechanism exploration of heterojunction catalyst for PMS activation.

Mechanisms of interaction between metal-organic framework-based material and persulfate in degradation of organic contaminants (OCs): Activation, reactive oxygen generation, conversion, and oxidation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based materials have been of great public interest in persulfate (PS)-based catalytic oxidation for wastewater purification, because of their excellent performance and selectiveness in organic contaminants (OCs) removal in complex water environments. The formation, fountainhead and reaction mechanism of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in PS-based catalytic oxidation are crucial for understanding the principles of PS activation and the degradation mechanism of OCs. In the paper, we presented the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) of MOFs-based materials for PS activation, including the relationship of structure and removal efficiency, active sites and ROSs as well as OCs. In various MOFs-based materials, there are many factors will affect their performances. We discussed how various surface modification projects affected the characteristics of MOFs-based materials used in PS activation. Moreover, we revealed the process of ROSs generation by active sites and the oxidation of OCs by ROSs from the micro level. At the end of this review, we putted forward an outlook on the development trends and faced challenges of MOFs for PS-based catalytic oxidation. Generally, this review aims to clarify the formation mechanisms of ROSs via the active sites on the MOFs and the reaction mechanism between ROSs and OCs, which is helpful for reader to better understand the QSAR in various MOFs/PS systems.

Investigation of manganese-iron oxide nanocomposite immobilized on powdered activated carbon as an efficient activator of peroxymonosulfate for antibiotics degradation: Conjunction of adsorption, radical and nonradical processes

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have gained considerable attention for their efficient oxidation of persistent pollutants. A two-step chemical co-precipitation method was used to prepare a bimetallic nanocomposite (MnOx@Fe3O4) consisting of manganese oxides and ferroferric oxides, supported by powdered activated carbon (PAC). The synthesis of MnOx@Fe3O4-PAC (MFP) was aimed to enhance the degradation efficiency of oxytetracycline (OTC) via the simultaneous adsorption and oxidation processes on the solid-liquid interface. The OTC degradation process in the MFP/PMS system could be well described by pseudo-first-order kinetics. A wide pH range (3-6) was acceptable for MFP to degrade OTC via PMS activation with the highest removal efficiency reaching up to 85.6% (OTC0 = 150 mg/L), while a 60.8% removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) was also attained simultaneously. SO4•- and 1O2, which were bound to the surface, played a crucial role as reactive oxygen species in the degradation of OTC. The combination of PAC, Fe3O4, and MnOx of MFP could enhance the degradation efficiency of OTC and fetch up their defects of separate application. The deduced OTC degradation pathway relied on the findings from UPLC-MS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Noteworthy, MFP maintained efficient catalysis performance in the five cycles of stability experiment with neglectable loss of manganese and iron. These results provide valuable understanding of the conjunction of adsorption, radical, and nonradical processes driven by MFP for OTC degradation.

Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Cu-OMS-2 Nanofibers for Efficient Degradation of N-Containing Heterocycles in Aquatic Solution

In this research, the degradation of different types of N-containing heterocycle (NHC) contaminants by Cu-OMS-2 via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in an aqueous environment was investigated. First, the effects of different reaction parameters were optimized using benzotriazole (BTR) as the model contaminant, and the optimal reaction conditions were 8 mM PMS, 0.35 g/L Cu-OMS-2, and 30 °C. Nine different types of NHC contaminants were effectively degraded under these reaction conditions, and the degradation efficiencies and the mineralization rates of those NHCs were more than 68 and 46%, respectively. Moreover, the Cu-OMS-2/PMS process presented excellent performance at a wide pH ranging from 3.0 to 11.0 and in the presence of some representative anions (NO3- and SO42-) and dissolved organic matter (fumaric acid). The inhibition sequence of anions on BTR removal during the Cu-OMS-2/PMS process was H2PO4- > HCO3- > Cl- > CO32- > NO3- > SO42-. It was also found that 74.5 and 71.3% BTR degradation rates were achieved in actual water bodies, such as tap water and Yellow River water, respectively. Besides, the Cu-OMS-2 heterogeneous catalyst had excellent stability and reusability, and the degradation rate of BTR was still at 77.0% after 5 cycles. Finally, electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and scavenging tests showed that 1O2 and SO4- • were the primary reactive oxygen species. Accordingly, Cu-OMS-2 nanomaterial was an efficient and sustainable heterogeneous catalyst to activate PMS for the decontamination of BTR in water remediation.

Single-atom Zr embedded Ti4O7 anode coupling with hierarchical CuFe2O4 particle electrodes toward efficient electrooxidation of actual pharmaceutical wastewater

Electrocatalytic oxidation is commonly restricted by low degradation efficiency, slow mass transfer, and high energy consumption. Herein, a synergetic electrocatalysis system was developed for removal of various drugs, i.e., atenolol, florfenicol, and diclofenac sodium, as well as actual pharmaceutical wastewater, where the newly-designed single-atom Zr embedded Ti4O7 (Zr/Ti4O7) and hierarchical CuFe2O4 (CFO) microspheres were used as anode and microelectrodes, respectively. In the optimal reaction system, the degradation efficiencies of 40 mg L-1 atenolol, florfenicol, and diclofenac sodium could achieve up to 98.8%, 93.4%, and 85.5% in 120 min with 0.1 g L-1 CFO at current density of 25 mA cm-2. More importantly, in the flow-through reactor, the electrooxidation lasting for 150 min could reduce the COD of actual pharmaceutical wastewater from 432 to 88.6 mg L-1, with a lower energy consumption (25.67 kWh/m3). Meanwhile, the electrooxidation system maintained superior stability and environmental adaptability. DFT theory calculations revealed that the excellent performance of this electrooxidation system could be ascribed to the striking features of the reduced reaction energy barrier by single-atom Zr loading and abundant oxygen vacancies on the Zr/Ti4O7 surface. Moreover, the characterization and experimental results demonstrated that the CFO unique hierarchical structure and synergistic effect between electrodes were also the important factors that could improve the system performance. The findings shed light on the single-atom material design for boosting electrochemical oxidation performance.

Peroxymonosulfate assisted pesticide breakdown: Unveiling the potential of a novel S-scheme ZnO@CoFe2O4 photo-catalyst, anchored on activated carbon

A ternary hetero-junction was prepared by anchoring ZnO@CoFe2O4 (ZCF) on activated carbon (AC) and employed as a UV-assisted peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator to boost the degradation of diazinon (DZN) pesticide. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of the ZCFAC hetero-junction were characterized through a series of techniques. The highest degradation efficiency of DZN (100% in 90 min) was achieved by the PMS-mediated ZCFAC/UV system, superior to other single or binary catalytic systems due to the strong synergistic effect between ZCFAC, PMS, and UV. The operating reaction conditions, synergistic effects, and the possible pathways of DZN degradation were investigated and discussed. Optical analysis showed that the band-gap energy of the ZCFAC hetero-junction not only enhanced the absorption of UV light but also reduced the recombination of photo-induced electron/hole pairs. Both radical and non-radical species (HO•, SO4•-, O2•-, 1O2, and h+) took part in the photo-degradation of DZN, assessed by scavenging tests. It was found that AC as a carrier not only improved the catalytic activity of CF and ZnO nanoparticles and conferred high stability for the catalyst but also played a crucial role in accelerating the catalytic PMS activation mechanism. Moreover, the PMS-mediated ZCFAC/UV system showed good reusability, universality, and practical applicability potential. Overall, this work explored an efficient strategy for the best use of hetero-structure photo-catalysts towards PMS activation to achieve high performance in decontaminating organic compounds.

In recent years, the synergistic degradation of water pollutants through advanced oxidation technology has emerged as a prominent research area due to its integration of various advanced oxidation technologies. The combined utilization of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation technology and photocatalysis demonstrates mild and nontoxic characteristics, enabling the degradation of water pollutants across a wide pH range. Moreover, this approach reduces the efficiency of electron hole recombination, broadens the catalyst's light response range, facilitates electron transfer of PMS, and ultimately improves its photocatalytic performance. The paper reviews the current research status of photocatalytic technology and PMS activation technology, respectively, while highlighting the advancements achieved through the integration of photocatalytic synergetic PMS activation technology for water pollutant degradation. Furthermore, this review delves into the mechanisms involving both free radicals and nonradicals in the reaction process and presents a promising prospect for future development in water treatment technology. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Degradation of water pollutants by photocatalysis and PMS synergistic action has emerged. Synergism can enhance the generation of free radicals. This technology can provide theoretical support for actual wastewater treatment.

Magnetic CuFe2O4 nanoparticles anchored on N-doped carbon for activated peroxymonosulfate removal of oxytetracycline from water: Radical and non-radical pathways

In this work, magnetic CuFe₂O₄ was prepared for the removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) by a self-propagating combustion synthesis method. Almost complete degradation (99.65%) of OTC was achieved within 25 min at [OTC]₀ = 10 mg/L, [PMS]₀ = 0.05 mM, CuFe₂O₄ = 0.1 g/L under pH = 6.8 at 25 °C for deionized water. Specially, the addition CO₃^2- and HCO₃^- induced the CO₃•^- appearance enhancing the selective degradation to electron-rich OTC molecule. The prepared CuFe₂O₄ catalyst exhibited desirable OTC removal rate (87.91%) even in hospital wastewater. The reactive substances were analyzed by free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and the results demonstrated that ¹O₂ and •OH were the main active substances. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to analyze the intermediates produced during the degradation of OTC and thus to speculate on the possible degradation pathways. Ecotoxicological studies were conducted to unveil large-scale application prospect.

Synergetic Photocatalytic Peroxymonosulfate Oxidation of Benzotriazole by Copper Ferrite Spinel: Factors and Mechanism Analysis

The development of oxidation processes with the efficient generation of powerful radicals is the most interesting and thought-provoking dimension of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. This study reports the successful preparation of a magnetic spinel of CuFe₂O₄ using a facile, non-toxic, and cost-efficient co-precipitation method. The prepared material exhibited a synergetic effect with photocatalytic PMS oxidation, which was effective in degrading the recalcitrant benzotriazole (BTA). Moreover, central composite design (CCD) analysis confirmed that the highest BTA degradation rate reached 81.4% after 70 min of irradiation time under the optimum operating conditions of CuFe₂O₄ = 0.4 g L^-1, PMS = 2 mM, and BTA = 20 mg L^-1. Furthermore, the active species capture experiments conducted in this study revealed the influence of various species, including ^•OH, SO₄^•-, O₂^•-, and h⁺ in the CuFe₂O₄/UV/PMS system. The results showed that SO₄^•- played a predominant role in BTA photodegradation. The combination of photocatalysis and PMS activation enhanced the consumption of metal ions in the redox cycle reactions, thus minimizing metal ion leaching. Additionally, this maintained the reusability of the catalyst with reasonable mineralization efficiency, which reached more than 40% total organic carbon removal after four batch experiments. The presence of common inorganic anions was found to have a retardant effect on BTA oxidation, with the order of retardation following: HCO₃^- > Cl^- > NO₃^- > SO₄^2-. Overall, this work demonstrated a simple and environmentally benign strategy to exploit the synergy between the photocatalytic activity of CuFe₂O₄ and PMS activation for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with widely used industrial chemicals such as BTA.
