Abstract
Cervical cancer is the most important female genital cancer that develops from the cervix, a lower part of uterus. Houttuynia cordata is ubiquitously present in Asian countries, and traditionally prescribed to treat infections and oedema. Our study emphasizes on biological synthesis route for developing copper nanocomplex using Houttuynia cordata (Hc-CuONPs) plant extract. The UV-visible spectroscopy study of Hc-CuONPs revealed the maximum peak at 350 nm, which proved the formation of Hc-CuONPs and FT-IR absorption peaks revealed the existence of different functional groups. The results of high-resolution TEM and X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the Hc-CuONPs have face centred cubic structure along with 40-45 nm in size. The temperature conditions of the synthesized Hc-CuONPs were spherical and circular morphologies. Furthermore, the Hc-CuONPs (IC50=5 µg/ml) exhibited toxicity on cervical cancer cells (HeLa). The intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in the control and Hc-CuONPs-treated HeLa cells was monitored by DCFH-DA staining and the apoptotic cell death was detected by using the dual (AO/EtBr) staining, propidium iodide and DAPI staining assays. Our results from the fluorescent staining analysis evidenced that the Hc-CuONPs have inhibited the cell proliferation and promoted the apoptotic cell death in HeLa cells. The Hc-CuONPs promoted the apoptosis by targeting the PI3K/Akt signalling pathways in HeLa cells. Our results explored that the Hc-CuONPs are effective against in vitro HeLa cancer cells.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata Thunb., a perennial herb belonging to the Saururaceae family is a well-known ingredient of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with several therapeutic properties. During the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in China, it was one of the approved ingredients in SARS preventative formulations and therefore, the plant may contain novel bioactive chemicals that can be used to suppress the replication of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a virus for which there are currently no effective drugs available. Like all RNA viruses, SARS-CoV-2 encode RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) enzyme which aids viral gene transcription and replication. The present study is aimed at understanding the potential of bioactive compounds from H. cordata as inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp enzyme. We investigated the drug-likeness of the plant's active constituents, such as alkaloids, polyphenols, and flavonoids, as well as their binding affinity for the RdRp enzyme. Molecular docking experiments show that compounds 3 (1,2,3,4,5-pentamethoxy-dibenzo-quinolin-7-one), 14 (7-oxodehydroasimilobine), and 21 (1,2-dimethoxy-3-hydroxy-5-oxonoraporphine) have a high affinity for the drug target and that the complexes are maintained by hydrogen bonds with residues like Arg553, Cys622 and Asp623, as well as hydrophobic interactions with other residues. The lead compounds' complexes with the target enzyme remained stable throughout the molecular dynamics simulation. Analysis of molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann surface area (MM-PBSA) and molecular mechanics generalized Born surface area (MM-GBSA) revealed the key residues contributing considerably to binding free energy. Thus, the findings reveal the potential of H. cordata bioactive compounds as anti-SARS-CoV-2 drug candidate molecules against the target enzyme.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata Thunb (H. cordata; Saururaceae) is widely distributed in Asian regions. It plays an important role in traditional health care and disease treatment, as its aboveground stems and leaves have a long medicinal history in China and are used in the treatment of pneumonia and lung abscess. In clinical treatment, it can usually be combined with other drugs to treat dysentery, cold, fever, and mumps; additionally, H. cordata is an edible plant. This review summarizes detailed information on the phytochemistry and pharmacological effects of H. cordata. By searching the keywords “H. cordata and lung”, “H. cordata and heart”, “H. cordata and liver”, and “H. cordata and inflammation” in PubMed, Web of Science and ScienceDirect, we screened out articles with high correlation in the past ten years, sorted out the research contents, disease models and research methods of the articles, and provided a new perspective on the therapeutic effects of H. cordata. A variety of its chemical constituents are characteristic of medicinal plants, the chemical constituents were isolated from H. cordata, including volatile oils, alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Flavonoids and volatile oils are the main active components. In pharmacological studies, H. cordata showed organ protective activity, such as reducing the release of inflammatory factors to alleviate lung injury. Moreover, H. cordata regulates immunity, enhances the immune barriers of the vagina, oral cavity, and intestinal tract, and combined with the antibacterial and antiviral activity of its extract, effectively reduces pathogen infection. Furthermore, experiments in vivo and in vitro showed significant anti-inflammatory activity, and its chemical derivatives exert potential therapeutic activity against rheumatoid arthritis. Antitumour action is also an important pharmacological activity of H. cordata, and studies have shown that H. cordata has a notable effect on lung tumour, liver tumour, colon tumour, and breast tumour. This review categorizes the biological activities of H. cordata according to modern research papers, and provides insights into disease prevention and treatment of H. cordata.

Abstract
A water-soluble pectic polysaccharide HCA4S1 was isolated from Houttuynia cordata and purified by DEAE Cellulose and Sephacryl S-300 column. HCA4S1 with an average molecular weight of 21.7 kDa mainly consisted of rhamnose, galacturonic acid, galactose, and arabinose. By using partial acid hydrolysis, methylation analysis, and NMR spectra, the structure of this polysaccharide is found to have a backbone consisting of 1,4-linked α‑d‑GalA and 1,2,4-linked α‑l‑Rha. The latter was substituted at C-4 position by 1,4 linked, 1,6-linked β‑Galp, or Teminal linked β‑Gal. Bioactivity test showed that this polysaccharide might inhibit the proliferation of A549 lung cancer cell by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. The expression of cleaved caspase 3 and cyclinB1 was observed to be upregulated after the treatment with this polysaccharide. Collectively, these results suggest that the pectin HCA4S1 from Houttuynia cordata is of potential value in the treatment of lung cancer, though the underlying mechanisms remain to be further confirmed.

Abstract
The anti-inflammatory effect of sodium houttuyfonate (SH), an herbal-originated drug that used in China clinically, was investigated on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) inflammatory model rats induced by combination usage of cigarette smoke (CS) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The morphology of the lung tissue, the expression levels of cytokines in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), the protein levels of TLR4, NF-κB p65, and SIGIRR, and the mRNA levels of TLR4, MyD88, NF-κB p65, and SIGIRR in lung tissues were investigated, respectively. After treated by SH (24.3 mg/kg), the abnormal morphology changes of lung tissues in COPD rats, such as neutrophil infiltration and airway obstruction, were considerably alleviated, as well as both proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and IL-1β, significantly decreased in BALF. The mRNA level of TLR4, MyD88, and NF-κB p65 and protein expression of TLR4 and NF-κB p65 in lung tissues decreased significantly after SH treatment, while both SIGIRR mRNA and protein levels increased significantly. These results suggest that SH markedly attenuated the pulmonary inflammation induced by CS and LPS and protected the lung tissue in COPD model rat. The anti-inflammatory effects were related to suppress the TLR4/NF-κB pathway dependent on MyD88. TIR8/SIGIRR might contribute to the protective effects of SH on pulmonary inflammation.

Abstract
A total of 144 pigs ((Landrace×Yorkshire)×Duroc] with an average initial BW of 8.45±0.57 kg were used in a 5-wk growth trial. Pigs were randomly allocated to 4 treatments with 9 replications per pen in a randomized complex block design. Dietary treatments included: i) CON (basal diet), ii) ANT (CON+tylosin 1 g/kg), iii) H1 (CON+H. cordata 1 g/kg) and iv) T1 (CON+T. officinale 1 g/kg). In this study, pigs fed the ANT and T1 treatment had a higher (p<0.05) average daily gain (ADG) and gain:feed (G:F) ratio than those fed CON and H1 treatment. Dietary ANT and T1 treatment led to a higher energy digestibility than the CON group. No difference (p>0.05) was observed on the growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility with H1 supplementation compared with the CON treatment. The inclusion of ANT treatment led to a higher (p<0.05) lymphocyte concentration compared with the CON treatment. Dietary supplementation of herbs did not affect (p>0.05) the blood characteristics (white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), IgG, lymphocyte). No difference was observed on (p<0.05) fecal microbial shedding (E. coli and lactobacillus) between ANT and CON groups. Treatments H1 and T1 reduced the fecal E. coli concentration compared with the CON treatment, whereas the fecal lactobacillus concentration was not affected by the herb supplementation (p>0.05). In conclusion, the inclusion of T. officinale (1 g/kg) increased growth performance, feed efficiency, energy digestibility similarly to the antibiotic treatment. Dietary supplementation of T. officinale and H. cordata (1 g/kg) reduced the fecal E. coli concentration in weaning pigs.

Abstract
The present review is an attempt to put an insight into a medicinal plant Houttuynia cordata Thunb, which is indigenous to North-East India and China. It is an aromatic medicinal herb belonging to family Saururaceae and is restricted to specialized moist habitats. The review provides detailed information regarding the morphology, distribution, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacological uses and also describes various pharmacological activities reported on the plant H. cordata. The review describes therapeutic efficacy of the whole plant and its extracts, fractions and isolated compounds in different diseased condition. Among the important pharmacological activities reported includes, anti-mutagenic, anti-cancer, adjuvanticity, anti-obesity, hepatoprotective, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, free radical scavenging, anti-microbial, anti-allergic, anti-leukemic, chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps activities. Thus, the present review will act as a source of referential information to researchers to perform clinical studies on isolated compounds that may serve the society and will help in improving human health care system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aims of this work are to enhance the in vitro skin permeation of Houttuynia cordata (water-soluble extract of H. cordata; HCWSE) and to boost the efficacy of HCWSE against atopic dermatitis (AD) - like skin lesion in hairless mice using lipid nano-carriers (liposome and cubosome). METHODS HCWSE was obtained by a hot water extraction. Monoolein cubosomal suspension containing HCWSE and egg phosphatidylcholine liposomal suspension containing the same was prepared by a sonication and a film hydration method, respectively. RESULTS The lipid nano-carriers, especially cubosome, enhanced the in vitro skin permeation of HCWSE. The inhibitory effects of HCWSE-containing lipid carrier suspensions on the development of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD-like skin lesion in hairless mice were investigated by observing appearance of skin surface, serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) level and cytokine expression. HCWSE-containing preparations suppressed IgE production and interleukin 4 expression, whereas they promoted interferon gamma expression. The order of lymphocyte (B-cell, Th1 cell and Th2 cell) modulating effect was HCWSE-containing cubosomal suspension > HCWSE-containing liposomal suspension > HCWSE solution in phosphate buffered saline, indicating that the cubosomal suspension, among the preparations, was the most efficacious in inhibiting the development of DNCB-induced AD-like skin lesion. CONCLUSION It is believed that the cubosomal suspension containing HCWSE would be an efficacious preparation for the treatment of AD.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata Thunb (HCT) is widely used in oriental medicine as a remedy for inflammation. However, at present there is no explanation for the mechanism by which HCT affects the production of inflammatory cytokines. The current study aimed to determine the effect of an essence extracted from HCT on mast cell-mediated inflammatory responses. Inflammatory cytokine production induced by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) plus a calcium ionophore, A23187, was measured in the human mast cell line, HMC-1, incubated with various concentrations of HCT. TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 secreted protein levels were measured using an ELISA assay. TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8 mRNA levels were measured using RT-PCR analysis. Nuclear and cytoplasmic proteins were examined by western blot analysis. The NF-κB promoter activity was examined by luciferase assay. It was observed that HCT inhibited PMA plus A23187-induced TNF-α and IL-6 secretion and reduced the mRNA levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8. It was also noted that HCT suppressed the induction of NF-κB activity, inhibited nuclear translocation of NF-κB and blocked the phosphorylation of IκBα in stimulated HMC-1 cells. It was concluded that HCT is an inhibitor of NF-κB and cytokines blocking mast cell-mediated inflammatory responses. These results indicate that HCT may be used for the treatment of mast cell-derived allergic inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a coronavirus, causes infectious bronchitis leading to enormous economic loss in the poultry industry worldwide. Houttuynia cordata (Saururaceae) (HC) is a traditional Chinese medicine used in China. In the present study, the effect of HC on cell infection by IBV was determined using plaque assay and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The inhibitory effect of HC on IBV infection in ovo and in vivo was analysed using specific pathogen free (SPF) chicken embryos and chickens. Moreover, the effect of HC on cell apoptosis induced by IBV was investigated. Results showed that HC had more than 90% inhibition rate against IBV infection in Vero cells and chicken embryo kidney cells, and decreased more than 90% apoptotic cells caused by IBV. HC fully protected the SPF embryos, and had more than 50% protection rate in SPF chickens, against IBV challenge.

Abstract
Asthma is an inflammatory airway disease. The pathogenic mechanisms of asthma include the infiltration of leukocytes and release of cytokines. Mimosa pudica (Mp) has been used traditionally for the treatment of insomnia, diarrhea and inflammatory diseases. Although Mp extract has various therapeutic properties, the effect of this extract on asthma has not yet been reported. This study investigated the suppressive effects of Mp extract on asthmatic responses both in vitro and in vivo. Mp extract was acquired from dried and powdered whole plants of M. pudica using 80% ethanol. BALB/c mice were used for the mouse model of asthma induced by ovalbumin. Mp extract significantly inhibited the HMC-1 cell migration induced by stem cell factor and blocked the release of monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in EoL-1 cells. Leukocytosis, eosinophilia and mucus hypersecretion in asthmatic lung were significantly suppressed by Mp extract. The release of ovalbumin-specific IgE in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and serum was also decreased. Mp extract treatment resulted in no liver cytotoxicity. The Mp extract has inhibitory properties on asthma and may be used as a potent therapeutic agent for allergic lung inflammation.

Abstract
CONTEXT Pseudorabies herpesvirus (PrV) belongs to the Alphaherpesvirinae. Piglets infected with PrV die within a few days. Development of effective antiviral agents is one alternative or complementary method to prevent PrV infection. Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (Saururaceae), H. cordata, a traditional Chinese medicine, is often used to relieve lung abnormal symptoms, infectious disease, refractory hemoptysis and malignant pleural effusion in China. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to investigate the effect of H. cordata injection on cell infection by PrV using Vero cells (a monkey kidney cell line) and swine testis cells (ST) as models. MATERIALS AND METHODS The infectivity of PrV was determined by plaque assays when H. cordata was applied to the virus, to the virus infected cells, and to the cells prior to infection. The genomic DNA copies post-drug treatment were confirmed by PCR and reverse transcription PCR. The cell apoptosis caused by the virus was analyzed. RESULTS H. cordata efficiently inhibited cell infection after incubating the drug with PrV. Nevertheless, H. cordata was more efficient in Vero cells than in ST cells in terms of its inhibitory effect. Low-dosage drug inhibited cell apoptosis induced by PrV; nevertheless, high-dosage drug alone resulted in cell apoptosis. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION H. cordata has a direct inhibitory activity against PrV in vitro. H. cordata may be used as an anti-PrV agent or combined with other anti-PrV agents. PrV infection induces cell apoptosis and H. cordata inhibits cell infection. The optimal administration dosage of H. cordata should be taken into account in the future, because high-dosage H. cordata alone causes cell apoptosis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate feasibility of sodium lauryl sulfoacetate (SLS) as an immunoadjuvant in chickens. After treating with 62.5, 125, 250, or 500 mug/mL SLS in vitro, lymphocyte proliferation assay of chicken peripheral blood mononuclear cells showed that the OD(570) values of all experimental groups, as well as Con A-stimulated group, were significantly higher than that of the untreated control group. After injection with 1.0, 2.0, or 4.0 mg/kg of SLS for 3 consecutive days, chickens were vaccinated with an attenuated vaccine against Newcastle disease virus (NDV), and the immunoadjuvant effects of SLS were evaluated on the basis of immune organ index, antibody response, and CD(4) (+)/CD(8) (+) T-cell ratio. The results confirmed that SLS could enhance NDV-specific antibody response and increase CD(4) (+)/CD(8) (+) T-cell ratio in vivo. Furthermore, SLS could improve NDV-specific antibody response in thiamphenicol-treated chickens. These data indicate that SLS not only can improve humoral immune response but also reverse the immunosuppressive effect of thiamphenicol in chickens.

Abstract
Houttuynia cordata Thunb. is a rhizome-bearing aromatic medicinal herb and is restricted to specialized moist habitats. The plant is collected from natural habitats for local consumption and trade. The status of the species and its variations in physiological performance in different habitats were studied in selected sites of geographically different areas of Brahmaputra valley in eastern India. The surveys were conducted in two different growth stages of the plant during 2005-2007. The sites where the species was encountered were marked and a distribution map was prepared. The frequency and density of the plant was higher in the moist habitats with higher organic carbon (0.85+/-0.05%). Generally, the density, biomass production and growth had significant (P<0.05) positive relationship with the soil physicochemical properties (linear curve fit). Soil moisture was the most dependent factor for the plant growth and the optimum growth was recorded at 78+/-5.6% (r2=0.9; P<or=0.01). The physiological performance of the plant in all the studied sites were significantly varied (P<0.05). The growth and development of H. cordata were also different in the flowering and senescence stages. Clay loam soil, average soil pH of 5.9, and 78% soil moisture were the favorable soil characteristics for the better growth of H. cordata and, hence, these data may be considered for conservation of the species.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY Shuang-Qing-Cao (SQC) is a folk Chinese medicinal formula. The therapeutic effects of inclusion complexation of SQC extract in beta-cyclodextrin (SQC-beta-CD) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) were studied in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two protocols were designed for administration of SQC-beta-CD (10 and 20 mg/kg body weight) or DEX (2 mg/kg). According to Protocol A we intraperitoneally injected diluent (saline with 0.5% Tween 80), SQC-beta-CD or DEX respectively into mice 30 min and 3h after LPS challenge. Alternatively, in Protocol B we administered diluent, SQC-beta-CD or DEX 3h before and 30 min after LPS challenge. RESULTS The histological results showed that SQC-beta-CD (20 mg/kg) protected mice from LPS-induced ALI such as oedema, haemorrhage, blood vessel and alveolar structural damage. Furthermore, SQC-beta-CD inhibited LPS-increased pulmonary MPO activity and migration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) into bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Immunohistochemical experiment demonstrated that SQC-beta-CD decreased inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in lung 24h after LPS administration. Consequently, SQC-beta-CD prevented LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) release in BALF. CONCLUSIONS The results indicated that SQC-beta-CD is greatly effective in inhibiting ALI. The present study indicated that SQC-beta-CD acted as a potential therapeutic reagent for treating ALI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a life-threatening form of pneumonia caused by SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV). From late 2002 to mid 2003, it infected more than 8000 people worldwide, of which a majority of cases were found in China. Owing to the absence of definitive therapeutic Western medicines, Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (Saururaceae)(HC) was shortlisted by Chinese scientists to tackle SARS problem as it is conventionally used to treat pneumonia. AIM OF THE STUDY The present study aimed to explore the SARS-preventing mechanisms of HC in the immunological and anti-viral aspects. RESULTS Results showed that HC water extract could stimulate the proliferation of mouse splenic lymphocytes significantly and dose-dependently. By flow cytometry, it was revealed that HC increased the proportion of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells. Moreover, it caused a significant increase in the secretion of IL-2 and IL-10 by mouse splenic lymphocytes. In the anti-viral aspect, HC exhibited significant inhibitory effects on SARS-CoV 3C-like protease (3CL(pro)) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). On the other hand, oral acute toxicity test demonstrated that HC was non-toxic to laboratory animals following oral administration at 16 g/kg. CONCLUSION The results of this study provided scientific data to support the efficient and safe use of HC to combat SARS.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Houttuynia cordata Thunb (Saururaceae), known as 'E-Sung-Cho' in Korea, has been traditionally used for the treatment of herpes simplex, chronic sinusitis, and allergy. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the inhibitory activity of Houttuynia cordata Thunb fractions (HcFs) on the T helper 2 (Th2) immune response, we evaluated the alternation of the release of Th2-type cytokines and chemokines such as interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5, and thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC/CCL17). MATERIALS AND METHODS Ethanol fraction was obtained from dried and powdered whole plants of Houttuynia cordata Thunb using ethanol. The residue was diluted with water and was then successively partitioned with n-hexane, EtOAc and BuOH. HcFs include ethanol, n-hexane, EtOAc, BuOH and water fractions. RT-PCR and ELISA were performed to measure mRNA and protein expression of cytokines. RESULTS HcFs inhibited the expression of IL-4 and IL-5 in response to phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and calcium ionophore (CaI) in Jurkat T cells and the human mast cell line, HMC-1. IL-4- and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)-induced TARC production was blocked by HcFs in skin fibroblast CCD-986sk cells, particularly by the ethanol extract of Hc. Stimulants included in PMA, phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and CaI, increased the mRNA level of CC chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4), a receptor of TARC, in Jurkat T cells, and the ethanol extract of HcF weakly blocked the increased mRNA level. However, the stimulants and ethanol extract had no effect on the CCR4 protein level. The ethanol extract inhibited TARC-induced migration, as well as basal migration of Jurkat T cells. CONCLUSIONS This study may show the usefulness of HcFs in the ethnopharmacological treatment of Th2-mediated or allergic inflammation, through the down-regulation of the production of Th2 cytokines and TARC, as well as cell migration.
