Adsorption, natural attenuation, and microbial community response of ofloxacin and oxolinic acid in marine sediments

The pollution of quinolone antibiotics in the marine environment has attracted widespread attention, especially for ofloxacin (OFL) and oxolinic acid (OXO) due to their frequent detection. However, few studies have been conducted to assess the behaviors and microbial community response to these antibiotics in marine sediments, particularly for potential antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this work, the adsorption characteristics, natural attenuation characteristics, and variation of microbial communities of OFL and OXO in marine sediments were investigated. The adsorption process of antibiotics in sediments occurred on the surface and internal pores of organic matter, where OFL was more likely to be transferred from seawater to sediment compared with OXO. Besides, the adsorption of two antibiotics on sediment surfaces was attributed to physisorption (pore filling, electrostatic interaction) and chemisorption (hydrogen bonding). The natural attenuation of OFL and OXO in marine sediment followed second-order reaction kinetics with half-lives of 6.02 and 26.71 days, respectively, wherein biodegradation contributed the most to attenuation, followed by photolysis. Microbial community structure in marine sediments exposure to antibiotics varied by reducing abundance and diversity of microbial communities, as a whole displaying as an increase in the relative abundance of Firmicutes whereas a decrease of Proteobacteria. In detail, Escherichia-Shigella sp., Blautia sp., Bifidobacterium sp., and Bacillus sp. were those antibiotic-resistant bacteria with potential ability to degrade OFL, while Bacillus sp. may be resistant to OXO. Furthermore, functional predictions indicated that the microbial communities in sediment may resist the stress caused by OFL and OXO through cyano-amino acid metabolism, and ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, respectively. The research is key to understanding fate and bacterial resistance of antibiotics in marine sediments.

Transport of sulfanilamide in saturated porous media under different solution chemistry conditions: role of physicochemical characteristics of soils

Identification of the transport of sulfonamide antibiotics in soils facilitates a better understanding of the environmental fate and behaviors of these ubiquitous contaminants. In this study, the mobility properties of sulfanilamide (SNM, a typical sulfonamide antibiotic) through saturated soils with different physicochemical characteristics were investigated. The results showed that the physicochemical characteristics controlled SNM mobility. Generally, the mobility of SNM was positively correlated with CEC values and soil organic matter content, which was mainly related to the interactions between the organic matter in soils and SNM molecules via π-π stacking, H-bonding, ligand exchange, and hydrophobic interaction. Furthermore, higher clay mineral content and lower sand content were beneficial for restraining SNM transport in the soils. Unlike Na+, Cu2+ ions could act as bridging agents between the soil grains and SNM molecules, contributing to the relatively weak transport of SNM. Furthermore, the trend of SNM mobility in different soil columns was unaffected by solution pH (5.0-9.0). Meanwhile, for a given soil, the SNM mobility was promoted as the solution pH values increased, which was caused by the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between SNM- species and soil particles as well as the declined hydrophobic interaction between SNM and soil organic matter. The obtained results provide helpful information for the contribution of soil physicochemical characteristics to the transport behaviors of sulfonamide antibiotics in soil-water systems.

Change of tetracycline speciation and its impacts on tetracycline removal efficiency in vermicomposting with epigeic and endogeic earthworms

Tetracycline pollution is common in Chinese arable soils, and vermicomposting is an effective approach to accelerate tetracycline bioremediation. However, current studies mainly focus on the impacts of soil physicochemical properties, microbial degraders and responsive degradation/resistance genes on tetracycline degradation efficiencies, and limited information is known about tetracycline speciation in vermicomposting. This study explored the roles of epigeic E. fetida and endogeic A. robustus in altering tetracycline speciation and accelerating tetracycline degradation in a laterite soil. Both earthworms significantly affected tetracycline profiles in soils by decreasing exchangeable and bound tetracycline but increasing water soluble tetracycline, thereby facilitating tetracycline degradation efficiencies. Although earthworms increased soil cation exchange capacity and enhanced tetracycline adsorption on soil particles, the significantly elevated soil pH and dissolved organic carbon benefited faster tetracycline degradation, attributing to the consumption of soil organic matter and humus by earthworms. Different from endogeic A. robustus which promoted both abiotic and biotic degradation of tetracycline, epigeic E. foetida preferently accelerated abiotic tetracyline degradation. Our findings described the change of tetracycline speciation during vermicompsiting process, unraveled the mechanisms of different earthworm types in tetracycline speciation and metabolisms, and offered clues for effective vermiremediation application at tetracycline contaminated sites.

COVID-19 related antiviral drugs are less adsorbable on sediment under alkaline and high cation conditions

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented usage and elevated environmental concentrations of antiviral drugs. However, very limited studies have reported their sorption characteristics on environmental matrices. This study investigated the sorption of six COVID-19 related antivirals on Taihu Lake sediment with varied aqueous chemistry. Results showed that the sorption isotherms for arbidol (ABD), oseltamivir (OTV), and ritonavir (RTV) were linear, while the Freundlich model was the best-fit for ribavirin (RBV) and the Langmuir model for favipiravir (FPV) and remdesivir (RDV). Their distribution coefficient, K_d, varied between 5.051 L/kg to 248.6 L/kg with the sorption capacities ranked as FPV > RDV > ABD > RTV > OTV > RBV. Alkaline conditions (pH 9) and elevated cation strength (0.05 M to 0.1 M) decreased the sorption capacities of the sediment for these drugs. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the spontaneous sorption of RDV, ABD, and RTV was between physisorption and chemisorption while FPV, RBV, and OTV were mainly physisorption. Functional groups related to hydrogen bonds, π - π interaction, and surface complexation were implicated in the sorption processes. These findings enhance our understanding about the environmental fate of COVID-19 related antivirals and provide basic data for predicting their distribution and risk in the environment.

Elucidation of aniline adsorption-desorption mechanism on various organo-mineral complexes

Complexes formed by organic matter and clay minerals, which are active components of soil systems, play an important role in the migration and transformation of pollutants in nature. In this study, humic-acid-montmorillonite (HA-MT) and humic-acid-kaolin (HA-KL) complexes were prepared, and their structures before and after the adsorption of aniline were analyzed. The aniline adsorption-desorption characteristics of complexes with different clay minerals and varying HA contents were explored using the static adsorption-desorption equilibrium method. Compared with the pristine clay minerals, the flaky and porous structure of the complexes and the aromaticity were enhanced. The adsorption of aniline on the different clay mineral complexes was nonlinear, and the adsorption capacity increased with increasing HA content. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of HA-MT was higher than that of HA-KL. After adsorption, the specific surface area of the complexes decreased, the surfaces became more complicated, and the aromaticity decreased because aniline is primarily adsorption onto the complexes via aromatic rings. Aniline was adsorbed onto the complexes via spontaneous exothermic physical adsorption. The amount of aniline desorbed from the complexes increased with increasing HA content, and a lag in desorption was observed, with a greater lag for HA-KL than for HA-MT.

Influence of Organic Matter on the Sorption of Cefdinir, Memantine and Praziquantel on Different Soil and Sediment Samples

Pharmaceuticals are known for their great effects and applications in the treatment and suppression of various diseases in human and veterinary medicine. The development and modernization of science and technologies have led to a constant increase in the production and consumption of various classes of pharmaceuticals, so they pose a threat to the environment, which can be subjected to the sorption process on the solid phase. The efficiency of sorption is determined by various parameters, of which the physicochemical properties of the compound and the sorbent are very important. One of these parameters that determine pharmaceutical mobility in soil or sediment is the soil−water partition coefficient normalized to organic carbon (Koc), whose determination was the purpose of this study. The influence of organic matter, suspended in an aqueous solution of pharmaceutical (more precisely: cefdinir, memantine, and praziquantel), was studied for five different types of soil and sediment samples from Croatia. The linear, Freundlich, and Dubinin−Raduskevich sorption isotherms were used to determine specific constants such as the partition coefficient Kd, which directly describes the strength of sorbate and sorbent binding. The linear model proved to be the best with the highest correlation coefficients, R2 > 0.99. For all three pharmaceuticals, a positive correlation between sorption affinity described by Kd and Koc and the amount of organic matter was demonstrated.

Interaction of Antibiotics and Humic Substances: Environmental Consequences and Remediation Prospects

The occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in the environment has received increasing attention due to their potential adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. Humic substances (HS) influence the mobility, reactivity, and bioavailability of antibiotics in the environment significantly due to their interaction. As a result, HS can affect the dissemination of antibiotic-resistance genes, which is one of the main problems arising from contamination with antibiotics. The review provides quantitative data on the binding of HS with fluoroquinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines and reports the proposed mechanisms of their interaction. The main issues of the quantification of antibiotic-HS interaction are discussed, which are a development of standard approaches and the accumulation of a dataset using a standard methodology. This would allow the implementation of a meta-analysis of data to reveal the patterns of the binding of antibiotics to HS. Examples of successful development of humic-based sorbents for fluoroquinolone and tetracycline removal from environmental water systems or polluted wastewaters were given. Data on the various effects of HS on the dissemination of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) were summarized. The detailed characterization of HS properties as a key point of assessing the environmental consequences of the formation of antibiotic-HS complexes, such as the dissemination of antibiotic resistance, was proposed.

Application of Humic and Fulvic Acids as an Alternative Method of Cleaning Water from Plant Protection Product Residues

Humic acids (HAs) and fulvic acids (FAs) are naturally occurring compounds that influence the fate and transportation of various compounds in the soil. Although HAs and FAs have multiple uses, the reports about their sorbent potential for environmental pollutants are scanty and sparse. In this study, HA and FA, isolated from lignite samples from two mines in Greece, were studied as sorbent materials for three active compounds of plant protection products, namely glyphosate (herbicide), cypermethrin (pyrethroid insecticide), and azoxystrobin (fungicide). According to the results, both HA and FA are promising sorbent materials for these active compounds, with HA achieving better sorption for cypermethrin and azoxystrobin, while FA was found to be more efficient for glyphosate. Moreover, their performance was not compromised by other components commonly found in commercially available herbicides/insecticides/fungicides. In addition, no significant leaching of the sorbed compounds was recorded. Finally, the two materials achieved similar sorption efficiency of the compounds from lake water.

Formation of stable imine intermediates in the coexistence of sulfamethoxazole and humic acid by electrochemical oxidation

The electrochemical degradation performance of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was studied in the presence of humic acid (HA) by using a Ti/Ti₄O₇/β-PbO₂ anode. The electrochemical degradation efficiency of SMX decreased from 93.4% to 45.8% in 50 min after the addition of 25 mg L^-1 HA. The pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant decreased by 71.4%, and the E_EO value increased from 63.8 Wh L^-1 to 90.9 Wh L^-1. HA and its degradation intermediates could compete for free radicals, especially for ·OH, with SMX. The analytical results obtained using UPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS showed that 18 degradation intermediates were identified in the coexistence of SMX and HA. Four imine intermediates were formed through the reactions between the aniline moieties of SMX and quinone groups in the HA structure through covalent bonds. Furthermore, the relative abundances of the intermediates demonstrated that the imine intermediates were complex and stable during electrochemical degradation.

Transport of Veterinary Antibiotics in Farmland Soil: Effects of Dissolved Organic Matter

The application of manure as a fertiliser to farmland is regarded as a major source of veterinary antibiotic (VA) contamination in the environment. The frequent detection of such emerging contaminants and their potential adverse impacts on the ecosystem and human health have provoked increasing concern for VA transport and fate. Extrinsic dissolved organic matter (DOM) may be introduced into farmland soil along with Vas, and thus exert significant effects on the transport of VAs via hydrological processes upon rainfall. The leaching of VAs can be either enhanced or reduced by DOM, depending on the nature, mobility, and interactions of VAs with DOM of different origins. From the aspect of the diversity and reactivity of DOM, the state-of-the-art knowledge of DOM-VA interactions and their resulting effects on the sorption-desorption and leaching of VAs in farmland soil was reviewed. Spectroscopic techniques for examining the extent of binding and reactive components of DOM with VAs are summarized and their usefulness is highlighted. Models for simulating VA transport under the effects of DOM were also reviewed. It is suggested that distinct impacts of DOM of various organic fertiliser/amendment origins should be considered for predicting the transport of VAs in farmland soil.

Exploring the toxicity of the aged styrene-butadiene rubber microplastics to petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria under compound pollution system

As a new pollutant, microplastics have increasingly drawn public attention to its toxic behavior in the environment. The aim was to investigate the effect of styrene-butadiene-rubber microplastics (mSBR) with different degrees of aging on petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) degrading bacteria in an environment with simultaneously existing pollutants. A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the changes in the physical and chemical properties of mSBR with aging and to examine the influence of these changes on the inhibition of PHC-degrading bacteria by mSBR in the vicinity of coexisting pollutants. The results showed that in the early stage of ultraviolet aging (10d), the particle surface shows wrinkles, but the structure is intact. After reaching the late stage of aging (20d), nano-scale fragments were generated on the surface of mSBR, the average particle size decreased from 3.074 µm to 2.297 µm, and the zeta potential increased from - 25.1 mV to - 33.1 mV. The inhibitory effect of bacteria is greater. At the same time, these changes in the physicochemical properties increase the adsorption effect of Cd by 20%, and also improve the stability of mSBR in solution, whereby bacterial growth is inhibited by inhibiting the LPO activity and protein concentration of PHC degrading bacteria.

Insights into the molecular mechanism of tetracycline transport in saturated porous media affected by low-molecular-weight organic acids: Role of the functional groups and molecular size

The transport of tetracycline possessed a great challenge in its environmental applications. This study looked at how various low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) affect the transport of tetracycline in environments. To that end, four LMWOAs were employed in experiments; acetic acid, malonic acid, malic acid, and citric acid. It was observed that LMWOAs promoted the tetracycline passage in presence of various experimental environments. The LMWOAs steric hindrance and deposition competition facilitated tetracycline transport at pH 5.0. The other deposition mechanism for tetracycline was the electrostatic repulsion between tetracycline and sand enhanced by deprotonated LMWOAs at pH 7.0. Moreover, the enhanced effects of LMWOAs on tetracycline mobility were intensively dependent on LMWOA type with more functional groups (e.g. carboxyl and hydroxyl groups) and larger molecular size supported stronger deposition competition, steric hindrance as well as electrostatic repulsion. Additionally, cation-bridging played a vital role for the enhanced effects of LMWOAs on tetracycline transport with divalent cations (e.g., Ca²⁺ and Pb²⁺). Interestingly, tetracycline exhibited a higher mobility in the presence of Ca²⁺ relative to Pb²⁺ regardless of LMWOAs-free or LMWOAs-addition. This phenomenon was attributed to the fact that Pb²⁺ has a greater affinity with tetracycline and LMWOAs than Ca²⁺. Furthermore, under the shadow of numerous LMWOAs, the non-equilibrium two site transportation model was employed to investigate the movement of tetracycline in porous saturated media. The present study suggests that LMWOAs may be important considerations in assessing the antibiotic passage in soil as well as groundwater.

Coating magnetite alters the mechanisms and site energy for sulfonamide antibiotic sorption on biochar

Magnetite-coating biochar (MBC) is a promising remediator for antibiotic contamination. Accurate models describing the sorption affinity are required to better understand the role of minerals. In this study, the presence of magnetite led to the improvements of oxygen-containing groups (i.e. C˭O) and regulation of π-systems within BC. Based on Dubinin-Ashtakhov (DA) model, the differences of site energy (E_m) and sorption heterogeneity (σ_e*) led to the variances between sorption capacities of sulfonamides (SAs). The positive correlations between E_m and the oxygen content or pore volume of MBCs indicated that π-π interactions, H-bonding, and pore-filling may act as the high energy sites. Moreover, σ_e* was related to the distribution of magnetite on BC and their porosities. These results suggested that compared to BCs, the coating minerals improved the π-interaction assisted H-bonding and proton configuration of antibiotic when sorbing on MBC. The negative correlations between the E_m of different SAs with their molecular sizes and solubilities resulted from steric effects and competition with water, which further confirmed the proposed high energy sites on MBCs. This study provided the insightful information of site energy distribution and understanding of fate and transport of organic pollutants on BC when the iron minerals were embedded or coated.

Sorption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products on soil and soil components: Influencing factors and mechanisms

The sorption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) on soil and soil components makes an important contribution to the fate, migration and bioavailability of PPCPs. Previous reviews have mostly focused on the sorption of PPCPs on single soil components (e.g., minerals and soil organic matter). However, the sorption of PPCPs within the whole soil system has not been systematically analyzed. This paper reviews the recent progress on PPCP sorption on soil and soil components. We have evaluated the sorption of a wide range of PPCPs in research fields that are usually considered in isolation (e.g., humic acids (HAs), montmorillonite, kaolinite, and goethite), and established a bridge between PPCPs and sorbent. The sorption mechanisms of PPCPs, e.g., cation exchange, surface complexation, electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding, are discussed and critically evaluated. We also assessed the influence of environmental factors (pH, ionic strength, organic matter and temperature) on sorption. This review summarizes the knowledge of PPCPs sorption on soil gained in recent years, which can provide new strategies for solving the problem of antibiotic pollution.

Fenton aging significantly affects the heavy metal adsorption capacity of polystyrene microplastics

Microplastics released into the environment undergo a variety of aging processes, however, information about the influence of aging on the adsorption behavior of microplastics is limited. In order to better understand the effect of aging polystyrene (PS) on the ability to adsorb heavy metal, H₂O₂ and Fenton reagent were used to investigate the aging properties of PS. Aging PS with these two different aging agents at pH = 4 and room temperature for the same time. Physical and chemical characterization indicated that aging caused oxidation of the surface of PS and the formation of surface micro-cracks. Based on the 2D-COS analysis, the aging process of PS functional groups could occur in the following sequence: 1375 (C-OH) > 1739 (C=O) > 1182 cm^-1 (C-O-C) > 1716 (O-C=O). The adsorption experiments for Cd²⁺ with two different concentrations were carried out by PS with different aging time at room temperature. The adsorption data showed that the adsorption capacity of Cd²⁺ was significantly enhanced after aging compared with pristine PS, and the adsorption capacity of PS after Fenton aging treatment is much stronger than that after H₂O₂ aging treatment. The kinetic analysis of the adsorption data indicates that the adsorption process is more consistent with the second-order kinetics than the first-order kinetics, and it is further concluded that the adsorption of Cd²⁺ by PS is a relatively complicated process. According to the fitting results of adsorption isotherms, the adsorption process of pristine PS mainly occurs on the surface, but with the continuous aging, more adsorption sites may be exposed on the surface of PS, so it can be concluded that the adsorption mechanism of Cd²⁺ by PS is the coexistence of physics and chemistry. This study indicates aging microplastics may have a significant impact on the destination and migration of metal contaminants, which deserves to be further concerned.

Sorption properties of cadmium on microplastics: The common practice experiment and A two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic study

Microplastics (MPs) that have accumulated in the environment are emerging as contaminating pollutants due to their interactions with metal ions. MPs change the migration and transformation of metal ions in the environment and afterward impact their environmental presence. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the interaction characteristics and mechanisms between Cd²⁺and MPs for assessing the ecological impacts of MPs. The traditional sequencing batch equilibrium test demonstrated that the sorption of Cd²⁺ onto MPs was related to the type of MPs present, the pH value of the solution, the ionic strength of the participants and the presence of humic acid. The sorption dynamics and isotherm experiment illustrated that the interactions were controlled by surface sorption and distribution effects. The specific surface area and surface charge were the main factors in managing the sorption process. FTIR spectra and a 2D-COS analysis showed that different functional groups played an important role in the sorption of Cd²⁺onto MPs. The results from this work afford new insights on how MPs may play an important role in the fate and transport of heavy metals and present a new analysis method for evaluating the environmental behavior of MPs and their role in transporting other contaminants.

Sorption of Organic Pollutants by Humic Acids: A Review

Humic acids (HA) are promising green materials for water and wastewater treatment. They show a strong ability to sorb cationic and hydrophobic organic pollutants. Cationic compounds interact mainly by electrostatic interaction with the deprotonated carboxylic groups of HA. Other functional groups of HA such as quinones, may form covalent bonds with aromatic ammines or similar organic compounds. Computational and experimental works show that the interaction of HA with hydrophobic organics is mainly due to π-π interactions, hydrophobic effect and hydrogen bonding. Several works report that sorbing efficiency is related to the hydrophobicity of the sorbate. Papers about the interaction between organic pollutants and humic acids dissolved in solution, in the solid state and adsorbed onto solid particles, like aluminosilicates and magnetic materials, are reviewed and discussed. A short discussion of the thermodynamics and kinetics of the sorption process, with indication of the main mistakes reported in literature, is also given.

Sorption and Desorption Characteristics of Tylosin in Three Louisiana Soils

The macrolide antibiotic tylosin is widely used in animal production, but its environmental fate is not fully understood. Objectives of this study were to determine the effect of pH on tylosin A sorption and desorption in three sandy loam soils from Louisiana, USA, that had long histories of poultry waste application, to model sorption and desorption, and to estimate the effect of high soil organic matter on sorption. Twenty-four-hour sorption isotherms (5 to 200 mg L in 0.01 M CaCl) at pH 4.5, 6.0, and pH 7.5 were described by the Freundlich model. Desorption from the 200-mg L set at constant pH by 10 24-h extractions with 0.01 M CaCl recovered 43 to 98% of the added tylosin A, and further desorption with methanol increased recovery from 66 to 100%. Single-point distribution coefficient, as a function of pH from 4 to 9 in 0.01 M CaCl exhibited maxima from pH 6 to 7, reflecting increasing sorption of the positively charged form with increasing pH up to about the pKa. The data were well described, modeling pH-dependent negative charge according to Henderson-Hasselbalch along with tylosin speciation. Using soil from which organic matter had been removed by HO gave three to six times greater K at pH 6 to 7, but without or with reduced maxima. The data could be approximately described without invoking pH-dependent surface charge. Further study is needed to confirm whether an increase in soil organic matter with poultry waste application decreases tylosin sorption, thus increasing environmental risk.

Synthesis and characterization of Ag/Bi2WO6/GO composite for the fast degradation of tylosin under visible light

Ag/Bi₂WO₆/graphene oxide composite with excellent photocatalytic properties was successfully prepared by hydrothermal-photoreduction synergistic method and is applied in antibiotics degradation. The structure and properties of as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by Fourier infrared spectrum (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), specific surface area analyzer (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscope (AFM). The results indicated that Ag and Bi₂WO₆ were uniformly loaded on the surface of graphene oxide. In addition, graphene oxide with conjugated carbon network structures has been applied as a photocatalyst supporter for the high electronic conductivity and the large reactive sites. Compared with the pure graphene oxide, the as-prepared Ag/Bi₂WO₆/graphene oxide catalyst exhibited excellent degradation efficiency and stability for degrading tylosin under Xe lamp irradiation. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the photodegradation efficiency of tylosin by Ag/Bi₂WO₆/graphene oxide achieved at 98% within 2 h, compared to 50% by pure graphene oxide. The excellent photodegradation ability is caused by the synergetic effect of Ag, Bi₂WO₆, and graphene oxide nanoparticles.

Tylosin sorption to diatomaceous earth described by Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich isotherm models

Tylosin, an antibiotic used for maintaining livestock health, is a macrolide structurally similar to a number of important, often prescribed human antibiotics. Because of this relationship, tylosin presents a potential threat of antimicrobial resistance from environmental buildup. This work investigated tylosin sorption to natural diatomaceous earth product (DE) and the types of physical interactions responsible for sorption. Most sorption processes were best described by the Langmuir model when compared with Freundlich model. Heat of sorption (ΔH) was 1.14 kJ mol^-1 indicating a physisorption process. Change in entropy (ΔS) was 119 J mol^-1. Sorption was evaluated from aqueous solution with various H⁺, KCl and Urea concentrations. In 0.01 M phosphate buffer (PB) pH 6.6, a maximum sorption capacity of 15 mg tylosin per g of DE was achieved. Changing the pH to 2.9 or 11.2 resulted in decreased sorption of tylosin (13 and 10 mg g^-1, respectively). Addition of 1 M KCl to 0.01 M PB pH 6.6 decreased sorption of tylosin to DE with the maximum binding capacity of 7 mg g^-1. Sorption in 1.0 M urea, 0.01 M phosphate buffer pH 6.6 showed a maximum sorption of 13 mg g^-1. Based on these results, the sorption of tylosin appears to be a physisorption process, with charge-charge interactions being the mode of sorption at neutral pH and small contributions from secondary interactions. This information will be useful for developing effective strategies for mitigating tylosin and other antimicrobial's impact on the environment.

Rates and equilibria of perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) sorption on soils from different regions of China

Understanding sorption of PFOA on soil particles is crucial to evaluate its environmental risk. Here, sorption of PFOA onto ten agricultural soils was examined. The influence of soil physico-chemical properties on PFOA sorption was investigated. The sorption rate of PFOA followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics. Isotherm data of PFOA sorption was fitted with both Freundlich and linear models and the latter fitted better. The sorption-desorption of PFOA onto ten soil samples depended on soil organic carbon content and composition of soil minerals. The sorption and desorption isotherms of PFOA on ten soils were linear, except for the sorption of PFOA onto a few soils, which was described by the Freundlich equation with the parameter N >1. The main sorption mechanism of PFOA was hydrophobic interaction between the perfluorinated carbon chain and the organic matter of soil, as evidenced by the correlation between the solid-liquid distribution coefficient and the fraction of soil organic carbon. The sorption of PFOA in soils was highly irreversible.
