Evaluation of joint toxicity of heavy metals and herbicide mixtures in soils to earthworms (Eisenia fetida)

Unraveling the effects of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) microplastic ageing on the sorption and toxicity of ionic liquids with 2,4-D and glyphosate herbicides

Microplastics represent a novel category of environmental pollutants, and understanding their interactions with typical xenobiotics is crucial. In this study, we investigated the impact of ionic liquids (ILs) containing herbicidal anions, namely glyphosate [Glyph] and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate [2,4-D], and the surfactant cation - dodecyltrimethylammonium [C12TMA] on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) microplastics. The aim of the study was to assess the sorption capacity of microplastics that were present in both untreated and aged form using standard and modified Fenton methods. In addition, impact on toxicity and stress adaptation of the model soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida KT2440 was measured. Upon ageing, ABS microplastics underwent a fivefold increase in BET surface area and total pore volume (from 0.001 to 0.004 cm3/g) which lead to a dramatic increase in adsorption of the cations on ABS microplastics from 40-45% for virgin ABS to 75-80% for aged ABS. Toxicity was mainly attributed to hydrophobic cations in ILs (EC50 ∼ 60-65 mg/dm3), which was also mitigated by sorption on ABS. Furthermore, both cations and anions behaved similarly across different ILs, corresponding chlorides, and substrates used in the ILs synthesis. These findings highlight microplastics potential as hazardous sorbents, contributing to the accumulation of xenobiotics in the environment.

Combined toxicity of abamectin and carbendazim on enzymatic and transcriptional levels in the soil-earthworm microcosm

To reveal the toxicological mechanisms of pesticide mixtures on soil organisms, this study concentrated on evaluating enzymatic activity and gene expression changes in the earthworm Eisenia fetida (Savigny 1826). Despite being frequently exposed to multiple pesticides, including the common combination of abamectin (ABA) and carbendazim (CAR), environmental organisms have primarily been studied for the effects of individual pesticides. Acute toxicity results exhibited that the combination of ABA and CAR caused a synergistic impact on E. fetida. The levels of MDA, ROS, T-SOD, and caspase3 demonstrated a significant increase across most individual and combined groups, indicating the induction of oxidative stress and cell death. Additionally, the expression of three genes (hsp70, gst, and crt) exhibited a significant decrease following exposure to individual pesticides and their combinations, pointing toward cellular damage and impaired detoxification function. In contrast, a noteworthy increase in ann expression was observed after exposure to both individual pesticides and their mixtures, suggesting the stimulation of reproductive capacity in E. fetida. The present findings contributed to a more comprehensive understanding of the potential toxicity mechanisms of the ABA and CAR mixture, specifically on oxidative stress, cell death, detoxification dysfunction, and reproductive capacity in earthworms. Collectively, these data offered valuable toxicological insights into the combined effects of pesticides on soil organisms, enhancing our understanding of the underlying risks associated with the coexistence of different pesticides in natural soil environments.

Residues of chlorpyrifos in the environment induce resistance in Aedes albopictus by affecting its olfactory system and neurotoxicity

Aedes albopictus, a virus-vector pest, is primarily controlled through the use of insecticides. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms of resistance in Ae. albopictus in terms of chlorpyrifos neurotoxicity to Ae. albopictus and its effects on the olfactory system. We assessed Ca2+-Mg2+-ATP levels, choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), Monoamine oxidase (MAO), odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), and olfactory receptor (OR7) gene expression in Ae. albopictus using various assays including Y-shaped tube experiments and DanioVision analysis to evaluate macromotor behavior. Our findings revealed that cumulative exposure to chlorpyrifos reduced the activity of neurotoxic Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase and ChAT enzymes in Ae. albopictus to varying degrees, suppressed MAO-B enzyme expression, altered OBPs and OR7 expression patterns, as well as affected evasive response, physical mobility, and cumulative locomotor time under chlorpyrifos stress conditions for Ae. albopictus individuals. Consequently, these changes led to decreased feeding ability, reproductive capacity, and avoidance behavior towards natural enemies in Ae. albopictus populations exposed to chlorpyrifos stressors over time. To adapt to unfavorable living environments, Ae. albopictus may develop certain tolerance mechanisms against organophosphorus pesticides. This study provides valuable insights for guiding rational insecticide usage or dosage adjustments targeting the nervous system of Ae. albopictus.

Effect of acute exposure of Hg on physiological parameters and transcriptome expression in silkworms (Bombyx mori)

Mercury (Hg) contamination poses a global threat to the environment, given its elevated ecotoxicity. Herein, we employed the lepidopteran model insect, silkworm (Bombyx mori), to systematically investigate the toxic effects of Hg-stress across its growth and development, histomorphology, antioxidant enzyme activities, and transcriptome responses. High doses of Hg exposure induced evident poisoning symptoms, markedly impeding the growth of silkworm larvae and escalating mortality in a dose-dependent manner. Under Hg exposure, the histomorphology of both the midgut and fat body exhibited impairments. Carboxylesterase (CarE) activity was increased in both midgut and fat body tissues responding to Hg treatment. Conversely, glutathione S-transferase (GST) levels increased in the fat body but decreased in the midgut. The transcriptomic analysis revealed that the response induced by Hg stress involved multiple metabolism processes. Significantly differently expressed genes (DEGs) exhibited strong associations with oxidative phosphorylation, nutrient metabolisms, insect hormone biosynthesis, lysosome, ribosome biogenesis in eukaryotes, and ribosome pathways in the midgut or the fat body. The findings implied that exposure to Hg might induce the oxidative stress response, attempting to compensate for impaired metabolism. Concurrently, disruptions in nutrient metabolism and insect hormone activity might hinder growth and development, leading to immune dysfunction in silkworms. These insights significantly advance our theoretical understanding of the potential mechanisms underlying Hg toxicity in invertebrate organisms.

Evaluation the Toxicity of Heavy Metal Mixtures in Anecic Earthworms (Aporrectodea giardi)

Using earthworms as bioindicators of heavy metal contamination in soils is a relevant tool for environmental risk monitoring. This study examines the combined effects of four distinct concentrations mixtures (M1, M2, M3 and M4) containing Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Fe and Mn on Aporrectodea giardi earthworms after 12 and 24 days (12 D/24 D) of exposure via the monitoring of certain biomarkers of stress including total protein content, glutathione (GSH), metallothionein (MT), catalase and lipoxygenase (LOX) activities. The results show a decrease in the total protein level for the M3 mixture after 24 D, whereas it increases for all other treatments regardless of exposure time. Glutathione and metallothionine levels increased for M2 and M3 and decreased for M1 and M4 after 12 D; they increased after 24 D for all the mixtures. Regarding enzyme activities, catalase activity was decreased for all the treatments unless for M3 (P > 0.05). However, LOX increased for M1, M2 and M4 except for M3 after 12 D, when inhibition of this biomarker was observed. LOX activity was inhibited for all the mixtures at the end of the treatment. All the mixtures generated oxidative stress in Aporrectodea giardi, which is minimized by increasing MT levels to remove the metal ions and triggering the antioxidant system, composed primarily of GSH and LOX to restore cellular homeostasis. These findings suggest that the species Aporrectodea giardi could be an excellent candidate for ecotoxicological risk assessment of soils contaminated by metal mixtures and it can be used in bioremediation for its fitness which allows it to tolerate high concentrations of metal mixtures.

Effects of diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, and wastewater from constructed wetlands on Eisenia fetida: impacts on mortality, fertility, and oxidative stress

Soil contamination with micropollutants is an important global problem and the impact of these pollutants on living organisms cannot be underestimated. The effects of diclofenac (DCF) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), their mixture (MIX), and wastewater containing these drugs on the mortality and reproduction of Eisenia fetida were investigated. The impact on the activities of antioxidant enzymes in earthworm cells was also assessed. Furthermore, the influence of the following parameters of the vertical flow constructed wetlands on wastewater toxicity was investigated: the dosing system, the presence of pharmaceuticals and the plants Miscanthus giganteus. The compounds and their mixture significantly affected the reproduction and mortality of earthworms. The calculated values of LC50,28 days values were 3.4 ± 0.3 mg kg-1 for DCF, 1.6 ± 0.3 mg kg-1 for SMX, and 0.9 ± 0.1 mg kg-1 for MIX. The EC50 (reproduction assay) for DCF was 1.2 ± 0.2 mg kg-1, whereas for SMX, it was 0.4 ± 0.1 mg kg-1, and for MIX, it was 0.3 ± 0.1 mg kg-1, respectively. The mixture toxicity index (MTI) was calculated to determine drug interactions. For both E. fetida mortality (MTI = 3.29) and reproduction (MTI = 3.41), the index was greater than 1, suggesting a synergistic effect of the mixture. We also observed a negative effect of wastewater (raw and treated) on mortality (32% for raw and 8% for treated wastewater) and fertility (66% and 39%, respectively) of E. fetida. It is extremely important to analyze the harmfulness of microcontaminants to organisms inhabiting natural environments, especially in the case of wastewater for irrigation of agricultural fields.

Toxicity comparison of atrazine on Eisenia fetida in artificial soil and three natural soils

Atrazine has been widely used in the world and caused environmental pollution, especially soil pollution. When assessing the toxicity of atrazine in soil, most studies used standardized artificial soils, while few studies focused on the real soil environments. In the present study, three natural soils and artificial soil were selected as test soils to study and compare the toxicities of atrazine to Eisenia fetida. Acute toxicity of atrazine was determined by filter paper and soil tests. In chronic toxicity study, after atrazine exposure, the content of reactive oxygen species in Eisenia fetida significantly increased and showed a dose-response relationship. The activity changes of three antioxidant enzymes and glutathione transferase showed that atrazine had obvious oxidative stress effect on earthworms. The contents of malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy deoxyguanosine in 0.1 and 1 mg/kg atrazine treatment groups were significantly higher than the control, indicating that medium and high concentrations of atrazine could cause lipid and DNA damage in Eisenia fetida. The acute toxicity results and the integrated biomarker response index for chronic toxicity indicated that the toxicity order of atrazine was: red clay > fluvo-aquic soil > artificial soil > black soil, and that the toxicity of atrazine in artificial soil was not representative of its toxicity in real soil environment. The results of correlation analysis showed that three soil property parameters of organic carbon, organic matter and sand were most related to the toxicity of atrazine.

Comparative toxicological assessment of three soils polluted with different levels of hydrocarbons and heavy metals using in vitro and in vivo approaches

The biological effects induced by the pollutants present in soils, together with the chemical and physical characterizations, are good indicators to provide a general overview of their quality. However, the existence of studies where the toxicity associated to soils contaminated with mixtures of pollutants applying both in vitro and in vivo models are scarce. In this work, three soils (namely, Soil 001, Soil 002 and Soil 013) polluted with different concentrations of hydrocarbons and heavy metals were evaluated using different organisms representative of human (HepG2 human cell line) and environmental exposure (the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas putida and, for the in vivo evaluation, the annelid Enchytraeus crypticus). In vitro assays showed that the soluble fraction of the Soil 001, which presented the highest levels of heavy metals, represented a great impact in the viability of the HepG2 cells and S. cerevisiae, while organic extracts from Soils 002 and 013 caused a slight decrease in the viability of HepG2 cells. In addition, in vivo experiments showed that Soils 001 and 013 affected the survival and the reproduction of E. crypticus. Altogether, these results provide a general overview of the potential hazards associated to three specific contaminated sites in a variety of organisms, showing how different concentrations of similar pollutants affect them, and highlights the relevance of testing both organic and soluble extracts when in vitro safety assays of soils are performed.

Comparison of fitness effects in the earthworm Eisenia fetida after exposure to single or multiple anthropogenic pollutants

Terrestrial ecosystems are exposed to many anthropogenic pollutants. Non-target effects of pesticides and fertilizers have put agricultural intensification in the focus as a driver for biodiversity loss. However, other pollutants, such as heavy metals, particulate matter, or microplastic also enter the environment, e.g. via traffic and industrial activities in urban areas. As soil acts as a potential sink for such pollutants, soil invertebrates like earthworms may be particularly affected by them. Under natural conditions soil invertebrates will likely be exposed to combinations of pollutants simultaneously, which may result in stronger negative effects if pollutants act synergistically. Within this work we study how multiple pollutants affect the soil-dwelling, substrate feeding earthworm Eisenia fetida. We compared the effects of the single stressors, polystyrene microplastic fragments, polystyrene fibers, brake dust and carbon black, with the combined effect of these pollutants when applied as a mixture. Endpoints measured were survival, increase in body weight, reproductive fitness, and changes in three oxidative stress markers (glutathione S-transferase, catalase and malondialdehyde). We found that among single pollutant treatments, brake dust imposed the strongest negative effects on earthworms in all measured endpoints including increased mortality rates. Sub-lethal effects were found for all pollutants. Exposing earthworms to all four pollutants simultaneously led to effects on mortality and oxidative stress markers that were smaller than expected by the respective null models. These antagonistic effects are likely a result of the adsorption of toxic substances found in brake dust to the other pollutants. With this study we show that effects of combinations of pollutants cannot necessarily be predicted from their individual effects and that combined effects will likely depend on identity and concentration of the pollutants.

Application of an Ecotoxicological Battery Test to the Paddy Field Soils of the Albufera Natural Park

Albufera Natural Park (ANP) (Valencia, Spain) is one of the most important wetland areas of the Mediterranean coast subject to high anthropogenic pressure, on whose soils a battery of bioassays has never been applied to evaluate the ecotoxicological risk. The present study determined available and water-soluble heavy metal content in four paddy soils used in the ANP, and the ecotoxicological effect on these soils was evaluated by performing the bioassays regulated in Spanish Royal Decree 9/2005. Soil properties and extractable Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn (EDTA pH = 7) were analyzed in soils. These elements and macro- and micronutrients were also assessed in soil leachate. A test battery covering the following was needed: acute toxicity test in Eisenia foetida (OECD TG 207); mineralization tests of nitrogen (OECD TG 2016) and carbon (OECD TG 217); growth inhibition test in Raphidocelis subcapitata (OECD TG 201); mobility inhibition test in Daphnia magna (OECD TG 202). The soils found in the most anthropized areas to the north of the ANP (Massanassa and Alfafar) demonstrated a higher concentration of available heavy metals than in the southern ones (Sueca and Sollana). The aqueous leachate of the studied soils contained very low concentrations, which would be related to soil properties. Despite the high concentration of available potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the Massanassa and Alfafar soils, the studied soils showed no toxicity during the performed battery bioassays. Therefore, soils can be considered non-toxic despite the obtained PTEs available concentration.

The Survival Response of Earthworm (Eisenia fetida L.) to Individual and Binary Mixtures of Herbicides

Frequent use of herbicides may impose a risk on non-target species. The objective was to test the combined toxic effect of binary herbicide mixtures—metribuzin:halosulfuron and metribuzin:flumioxazin—on non-target earthworms in two test systems: filter paper and a soil toxicity test system. The joint action experiments were independently run twice to substantiate the findings. The most potent individual herbicide was metribuzin, with a 50% lethal concentration (LC50) of 17.17 µg ai. cm−2 at 48 h in the filter paper test. The toxicity of the individual herbicides on the filter paper test was ranked as metribuzin>halosulfuron>flumioxazin. In the soil test, metribuzin and halosulfuron had high toxicity with an LC50 of 8.48 and 10.08 mg ai. kg−1, respectively, on day 14. Thus, the individual herbicide ranking did not change between the filter paper and artificial soil tests. The herbicide’s mixed effect in both test systems showed a consistent antagonistic effect relative to a Concentration Addition reference model. It indicates that the mixtures retracted the herbicide’s action in the earthworms.

Sources of ambient non-methane hydrocarbon compounds and their impacts on O3 formation during autumn, Beijing

The field observation of 54 non-methane hydrocarbon compounds (NMHCs) was conducted from September 1 to October 20 in 2020 during autumn in Haidian District, Beijing. The mean concentration of total NMHCs was 29.81 ± 11.39 ppbv during this period, and alkanes were the major components. There were typical festival effects of NMHCs with lower concentration during the National Day. Alkenes and aromatics were the dominant groups in ozone formation potential (OFP) and OH radical loss rate (L_OH). The positive matrix factorization (PMF) running results revealed that vehicular exhaust became the biggest source in urban areas, followed by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) usage, solvent usage, and fuel evaporation. The box model coupled with master chemical mechanism (MCM) was applied to study the impacts of different NMHCs sources on ozone (O₃) formation in an O₃ episode. The simulation results indicated that reducing NMHCs concentration could effectively suppress O₃ formation. Moreover, reducing traffic-related emissions of NMHCs was an effective way to control O₃ pollution at an urban site in Beijing.

Impact of malathion toxicity on the oxidative stress parameters of the black soldier fly Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae)

The black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) may serve as a promising tool in the animals feed production industry. The input organic wastes may be contaminated by insecticides that affect both the insect’s mass rearing, and the animals feed process. Therefore, in the current study the assessment of oxidative stress parameters of the black soldier fly (BSF) were investigated to quantify the deleterious effect of malathion-contaminated kitchen waste (1:1 vegetable: fruit waste) container on the insect. The different developmental stages of insect (adult and larva) were exposed to different concentrations (0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.015, and 0.02 mg/mL) of malathion. The results showed that the mean value of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), which included hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion radicals (O2^•-) concentrations were lower in larval stage than in adults, in all treated groups (0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.015, and 0.02 mg/mL malathion concentration). Also, the protein carbonyls amount and lipid peroxides levels were decreased in the 0.02 mg/mL Malathion compared to the control values. However, the cluster analysis revealed slight dissimilar patterns for control insects and the highest malathion concentration (0.02 mg/ml). These stage-related differences could occur from the different growth dynamic functions of larvae and adults. The larvae were distinguished by robust growth, and significant oxygen consumption. The results verified that oxidative stress parameters, especially protein carbonyls and α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) were promising, cheap, quick and cost-effective applications for determining the macromolecules damage, and antioxidant ability of H. illucens enclosed with malathion exposure. These findings described that malathion application induces macromolecules damage mediated through oxidative stress injury.

Evolution of the earthworm (Eisenia fetida) microbial community in vitro and in vivo under tetracycline stress

Bioremediation of contaminated soil has received increasing attention, and the effects of antibiotic residues on the soil ecological environment are a current research hotspot. Earthworms are the first choice of soil organisms to indicate the degree of soil pollution, and their detoxification mechanism after antibiotic stress must be further explored. Taking Eisenia fetida as the research object, an antibiotic (tetracycline) stress test was carried out in sterile artificial soil. The stress concentrations were set at 0, 0.3, 3, 30, 300 and 600 mg/kg. The ECO method was used to cultivate microbes in earthworms and soil. The carbon source utilization intensity algorithm developed by our team was used for data statistics, and a factor analysis model was constructed to explore the succession process of microbes of earthworms in vivo and in vitro under tetracycline stress. The results showed that there were four processes in the evolution of microbes under short-term tetracycline stress: at 1-3 days, the microbes in worms played a leading role; at 4-5 days, the microbes in the worms and the soil microbes jointly resisted TET stress; after 6-8 days of stress, the microbes in worms still played the main role, but their role was weakened; and after 9-10 days, soil microbes played a leading role, and tolerant microbes appeared. Under long-term stress, the microbes of earthworms in vivo and in vitro were obvious different, and there may be no regulatory relationship. And the factor analysis model is suitable for the analyse of the changes in microbial communities in vivo and in vitro under TET stress. The research results provide a reference method and model basis for the bioremediation of antibiotic-contaminated soil and the study of earthworm detoxification mechanisms, and help agricultural development.

The cadmium decontamination and disposal of the harvested cadmium accumulator Amaranthus hypochondriacus L

The heavy metal accumulated biomass after phytoremediation needs to be decontaminated before disposal. Liquid extraction is commonly used to remove and recycle toxic heavy metals from contaminated biomass. In this study, we examined the cadmium (Cd) removal efficiency using different chemical reagents (hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium) of the post-harvest Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. biomass. The purifications for the extracted liquids and ecological risk assessments for the extracted residues were also investigated. We have found that 77.8% of Cd in stems and 62.1% of Cd in leaves were removed by 0.25 M HCl after 24 h. In addition, K₂CO₃, KOH, and 4 Å molecular sieve could remove ≥89.0% of Cd in the extracted liquids. Finally, after we returned the extracted residues to the earthworm-incubated soil, the extracted biomass negatively affected the growth (weight loss ≥ 11.0%) and survival (mortality ≥ 33.3%) of Eisenia fetida. It should be noted that earthworms decreased soil available Cd concentrations from 0.14-0.05 mg kg^-1 to 0.11-0.04 mg kg^-1 and offset the negative effects of the Cd-contaminated biomass on soil microbes. Overall, given the cost of reagents, the Cd removal efficiency, and the ecological risks of the extracted biomass, using 0.25 M HCl for liquid extraction and K₂CO₃ for purification should be recommended. This work highlights the potential of liquid extraction for immediately and directly removing the Cd from fresh contaminated accumulator biomass and the resource cycling potential of the extracted liquids and biomass after purification.

Biological assessment of contaminated shooting range soil using earthworm biomarkers

Environmental contamination at shooting ranges is a widely known ecological problem. The aim of the study was to evaluate the extent of contamination and the ecotoxicity of a shooting range soil assessing the physiological and biochemical effects on earthworm Eisenia fetida (Savigny). Adult E. fetida were exposed to the soils collected from different distances of the shooting range for 28 days. High concentrations of Pb (53023 mg kg^-1), increased concentrations of Ni (12 mg kg^-1) and Sb (600 mg kg^-1), significantly higher soil organic matter content (7.2%) and density (6.14 g cm^-3) were determined in the backstop berm soil. Significant weight loss (44.4%) of the adult earthworms after 28 days of exposure occurred in the most contaminated shooting range soil and significantly higher concentrations of Pb (3101 mg kg^-1), Cu (51 mg kg^-1), Ni (2 mg kg^-1), and Sb (20 mg kg^-1) were determined in the tissues of worms, and no juveniles found there. Juveniles exposed to the less contaminated soil of the shooting range (A, B and C) accumulated significant concentrations of Pb, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn. The antioxidant enzymatic activity (glutathione-s-transferase (GST)) decreased, and lipid peroxidation increased as indicated by an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) level in earthworms exposed to the contaminated soil. A compensatory mechanism between the activities of glutathione reductase (GR) and GST in earthworms exposed to these soils was confirmed.

Ecotoxicological effects of micronized car tire wear particles and their heavy metals on the earthworm (Eisenia fetida) in soil

As one of the most common and persistent emerging human-made pollutants, microplastics (MPs) have become a global environmental problem. Although many studies have demonstrated the impact of MPs on aquatic organisms, the potential effects on terrestrial fauna are relatively unknown, even though soil is a major sink for plastic pollution. In this study, earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were exposed to MPs from tires (TMPs) in artificial soil at different TMP concentrations (0, 1, 5, 10, and 20%, w/w), at different TMP size fractions (2 mm-350 μm; 350 μm-50 μm; 50 μm-25 μm; and <25 μm), and time periods (14 and 28 days). The purpose was to evaluate the impact of TMPs on the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Zn, Cd, and Pb) and levels of oxidative stress in the earthworms. Fluorescence imaging of TMPs stained with Nile red dye clearly showed that the worms had ingested the TMPs, with smaller particles preferentially consumed. The ingested TMPs had altered the surface morphology, degradation that increased surface area and uptake of heavy metals into the organisms. Earthworms exposed to TMPs at the higher concentrations showed clear signs of oxidative stress, with significantly (p < 0.05) increased catalase and peroxidase activity and lipid peroxidation levels, and reduced activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione S-transferase. SOD, POD, and CAT are important cell protection enzymes that prevent excessive levels of reactive oxygen species in cells. MDA represents the total scavenging ability of free radicals in the tissue. SOD decreases and MDA accumulates rapidly. GST has a detoxification effect. Overall, this study adds to the growing body of evidence that TMPs are harmful to certain terrestrial organisms.

Antifouling paint particles in soils: toxic impact that goes beyond the aquatic environment

Antifouling paint particles (APPs) originate from vessel maintenance and cleaning activities and their potentially toxic components are found at high concentrations in nearby soils, yet no studies have investigated their toxicity to soil organisms. We investigated the effects of exposure to soils containing APPs on the mortality, biomass, and reproductive performance of the earthworm Eisenia andrei. Earthworms were exposed to contaminated soil from a boatyard and non-contaminated soils treated with different concentrations of APPs (0.01, 0.14 and 1.50%, w/w) for 56 days. An ecological risk assessment using a Hazard Quotient (HQ) was also carried out. Exposure to contaminated soils reduced worm survival, biomass, and reproductive performance and these effects were concentration-dependent. The HQ was high in soil samples with APPs in both acute and chronic tests, and copper contributed the most to the HQ. Copper, zinc, and lead had the highest concentrations and exceeded the Brazilian legal limits. A principal component analysis (PCA) was performed and showed that biomass and number of juveniles parameters was associated with the metals Cu, Sn and Zn, while the mortality parameter had no association with any analyzed metal. These findings highlighted that the synergistic effects of compounds present in the APPs, such as the booster biocides DCOIT, and metal mixtures should not be overlooked. We conclude that soils contaminated with APPs are toxic to earthworms. This reveals that the ecological impact of APPs goes beyond effects on aquatic environments, compromising key organisms of edaphic ecological processes.

Stage-, sex- and tissue-related changes in H2O2, glutathione concentration, and glutathione-dependent enzymes activity in Aiolopus thalassinus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) from heavy metal polluted areas

This study is part of a large project carried out at the Cairo University, Egypt, and focused on assessing physiological and biochemical changes in Aiolopus thalassinus under the influence of environmental pollution with heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn). The study aimed to investigate parameters related to maintaining redox balance, with particular emphasis on stage-, sex- and tissue-dependent differences in H₂O₂ and glutathione (GSH) levels and activity of selected enzymes involved in GSH metabolism. A noticeable increase in the concentration of H₂O₂ was found, especially in the gut of 5th instar nymphs and females from the highly polluted site. An increase in GSH concentration was significant, especially in the gut of adult A. thalassinus from the high polluted site. However, recycling of reduced form of glutathione in the gut by glutathione reductase (GR) was relevant only for females from the high polluted site. Nymphs and females generally showed higher glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, especially in the gut. These stage- and sex-related differences can result from different growth dynamic and various reproductive functions of nymphs and both sexes. The digestive track is in direct contact with xenobiotics consumed with food. Nymphs are characterized by vigorous growth, they feed intensively, and their development processes are associated with substantial oxygen consumption. Also, maintaining the antioxidant system at a high level can be more important for females than males due to egg production over a long period. It appears that de novo GSH synthesis is a favorable and cost-effective adaptation mechanism for A. thalassinus living in the high polluted site.
