Abstract
To study the effect of storage (for 0, 3, 6, and 12 months) on the flavor of green tea (GT), we monitored the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in GT through gas chromatography (GC) combined with ion mobility spectrometry and headspace solid-phase micro extraction, GC-MS (mass spectrometry). Then, relative odor activity value (ROAV) was applied to analyze the aroma contribution of the VOCs. During storage, the polyphenol and caffeine contents gradually decreased from 22.38 % to 18.51 % and from 4.37 % to 3.74 %, respectively, and the total soluble sugar first increased and then decreased (from 4.89 % to 7.16 % and then 5.02 %). Although the total free amino acid contents showed a fluctuating trend, the content of cysteamine increased gradually. The contents of VOCs with positive contribution to GT aroma, including linalool, geraniol, nonanal, and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, decreased. They also contributed less in the ROAV after storage. The ROAVs of nonanal, linalool, and geraniol decreased from 3.37 to 0.79, from 100 to 38.21, and from 2.98 to 1.8, respectively, after 12 months of storage. Principal component analysis can be used to identify the samples with different storage durations based on these data. Given the increase in amount of cysteamine and decrease in that of linalool oxide, oxidation may be not the only factor responsible for tea quality in storage.

Abstract
With a dramatic increase in the number of obese and overweight people, there is a great need for new anti-obesity therapies. With the discovery of the functionality of brown adipose tissue in adults and the observation of beige fat cells among white fat cells, scientists are looking for substances and methods to increase the activity of these cells. We aimed to describe how scientists have concluded that brown adipose tissue is also present and active in adults, to describe where in the human body these deposits of brown adipose tissue are, to summarize the origin of both brown fat cells and beige fat cells, and, last but not least, to list some of the substances and methods classified as BAT promotion agents with their benefits and side effects. We summarized these findings based on the original literature and reviews in the field, emphasizing the discovery, function, and origins of brown adipose tissue, BAT promotion agents, and batokines. Only studies written in English and with a satisfying rating were identified from electronic searches of PubMed.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent a major global health concern, responsible for significant morbidity, mortality, and disability. To mitigate the impact of CVDs, individuals often seek preventive measures, and one such approach is the consumption of green tea. This study aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the effects of green tea consumption on the prevalence of cardiovascular outcomes. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review using PubMed and Google Scholar databases to identify relevant studies. Our analysis revealed that the risk factors associated with CVDs can vary across different diseases, with hypertension being a common risk factor for CVD mortality and CVD. Notably, the consumption of green tea exhibited a positive effect on reducing the prevalence of cardiometabolic risks and hypercholesterolemia. Furthermore, green tea consumption was observed to have a beneficial impact on lowering both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. In conclusion, the studies reviewed in this research suggest that the consumption of green tea has a significant and positive influence on cardiovascular health. These findings highlight the potential of green tea as a valuable component of a healthy lifestyle, offering a promising avenue for its use as a dietary supplement to reduce the risk of CVDs.

Abstract
Despite the importance of fixation in determining green tea quality, its role in reducing the bitter and astringent taste of this beverage remains largely unknown. Herein, an electromagnetic roller-hot-air-steam triple-coupled fixation (ERHSF) device was developed, and its operating parameters were optimized (steam volume: 20 kg/h; hot-air temperature: 90 °C; hot-air blower speed: 1200 r/min). Compared with conventional fixation treated samples, the ratio of tea polyphenols to free amino acids and ester-catechins to simple-catechins in ERHSF-treated samples was reduced by 11.0% and 3.2%, reducing bitterness and astringency of green tea; amino acids, soluble sugars, and chlorophyll contents were significantly increased, enhancing the freshness, sweetness, and greenness; the color indexes, such as L/L* value of brightness and -a/-a* value of greenness, were also improved, and ERHSF-treated samples had the highest sensory scores. These results provided theoretical support and technical guidance for precise quality improvement of summer-autumn green tea.

Abstract
Tea is one of the most commonly consumed beverages in the world. Morocco, Japan, and China have consumed green tea for centuries. White tea, which is a variety of green teas, is very popular in China and is highly revered for its taste. Presently, both teas are consumed in other countries around the world, even as functional ingredients, and novel research is constantly being conducted in these areas. We provide an update on the health benefits of white and green teas in this review, based on recent research done to present. After a general introduction, we focused on tea's anti-obesity and human health-promoting potential, adverse effects, and new approaches to tea and its bioactive compounds. It has been found that the health benefits of tea are due to its bioactive components, mainly phenolic compounds. Of these, catechins are the most abundant. This beverage (or its extracts) has potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could contribute to body weight control and the improvement of several chronic diseases. However, some studies have mentioned the possibility of toxic effects; therefore, reducing tea consumption is a good idea, especially during the last trimester of pregnancy. Additionally, new evidence will provide insight into the possible effects of tea on the human gut microbiota, and even on the viruses responsible for SARS-CoV-2. A beverage such as this may favor beneficial gut microbes, which may have important implications due to the influence of gut microbiota on human health.

Abstract
In recent years, plant polyphenols have become a popular focus for the development of novel functional foods. Polyphenols, a class of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and lignans, are commonly found in plant-based diets with a variety of biological actions, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Unfortunately, polyphenols are not widely used in nutraceuticals since many of the chemicals in polyphenols possess poor oral bioavailability. Thankfully, polyphenols can be encapsulated and transported using bio-based nanocarriers, thereby increasing their bioavailability. Polyphenols' limited water solubility and low bioavailability are limiting factors for their practical usage, but this issue can be resolved if suitable delivery vehicles are developed for encapsulating and delivering polyphenolic compounds. This paper provides an overview of the study of nanocarriers for the enhancement of polyphenol oral bioavailability, as well as a summary of the health advantages of polyphenols in the prevention and treatment of several diseases.

Abstract
Storage time is one of the important factors affecting the aroma quality of Pu-erh tea. In this study, the dynamic changes of volatile profiles of Pu-erh teas stored for different years were investigated by combining gas chromatography electronic nose (GC-E-Nose), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). GC-E-Nose combined with partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) realized the rapid discrimination of Pu-erh tea with different storage time (R2Y = 0.992, Q2 = 0.968). There were 43 and 91 volatile compounds identified by GC-MS and GC-IMS, respectively. A satisfactory discrimination (R2Y = 0.991, and Q2 = 0.966) was achieved by using PLS-DA based on the volatile fingerprints of GC-IMS. Moreover, according to the multivariate analysis of VIP > 1.2 and univariate analysis of p < 0.05, 9 volatile components such as linalool and (E)-2-hexenal were selected as key variables to distinguish Pu-erh teas with different storage years. The results provide theoretical support for the quality control of Pu-erh tea.

Abstract
Herein, a food-to-food fortification with blueberries and black tea was performed for people suffering from iron deficiency, creating a new functional product with high consumer acceptance. Black tea was mixed with varying concentrations of sun-dried or freeze-dried blueberries and infused at different temperatures. Spectrophotometric analysis revealed that the addition of blueberries to black tea inhibited the formation of the iron-polyphenol complex by up to 97 % (p <.001). Using β-carotene bleaching and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assays, 50 % freeze-dried blueberry and 50 % black tea (FDFBT50) was determined to be the sample with the highest antioxidant activity (p <.001).The polyphenol profiles were investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to categorize the tea samples. The findings demonstrated that the FDFBT50 sample was the best candidate among the samples, considering both the consumer acceptance and the bioactive parameters that showed statistically significant differences.

Abstract
Tea polyphenol EGCG has been widely recognized for antiobesity effects. However, the molecular mechanism of lipidomic pathway related to lipid-lowering effect of EGCG is still not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and mechanism of EGCG activated hepatic lipidomic pathways on ameliorating obesity-related complications by using newly developed leptin receptor knockout (Lepr KO) rats. Results showed that EGCG supplementation (100 mg/kg body weight) significantly decreased total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) levels both in the serum and liver, and significantly improved glucose intolerance. In addition, EGCG alleviated fatty liver development and restored the normal liver function in Lepr KO rats. Liver lipidomic analysis revealed that EGCG dramatically changes overall composition of lipid classes. Notably, EGCG significantly decreased an array of triglycerides (TGs) and diglycerides (DGs) levels. While EGCG increased 31 glycerophospholipid species and 1 sphingolipid species levels, such as phosphatidylcholines (PCs), phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs), phosphatidylserines (PSs) and phosphatidylinositols (PIs) levels in the liver of Lepr KO rats. Moreover, 14 diversely regulated lipid species were identified as potential lipid biomarkers. Mechanistic analysis revealed that EGCG significantly activated the SIRT6/AMPK/SREBP1/FAS pathway to decrease DGs and TGs levels and upregulated glycerophospholipids synthesis pathways to increase glycerophospholipid level in the liver of Lepr KO rats. These findings suggested that the regulation of glycerolipids and glycerophospholipid homeostasis might be the key pathways for EGCG in ameliorating obesity-related complications in Lepr KO rats.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the amendatory effects of Fu brick tea aqueous extract (FTE) on constipation and its underlying molecular mechanism. The administration of FTE by oral gavage (100 and 400 mg/kg·bw) for 5 weeks significantly increased fecal water content, improved difficult defecation, and enhanced intestinal propulsion in loperamide (LOP)-induced constipated mice. FTE also reduced colonic inflammatory factors, maintained the intestinal tight junction structure, and inhibited colonic Aquaporins (AQPs) expression, thus normalizing the intestinal barrier and colonic water transport system of constipated mice. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis results indicated that two doses of FTE increased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidota (F/B) ratio at the phylum level and increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus from 5.6 ± 1.3 to 21.5 ± 3.4% and 28.5 ± 4.3% at the genus level, subsequently resulting in a significant elevation of colonic contents short-chain fatty acids levels. The metabolomic analysis demonstrated that FTE improved levels of 25 metabolites associated with constipation. These findings suggest that Fu brick tea has the potential to alleviate constipation by regulating gut microbiota and its metabolites, thereby improving the intestinal barrier and AQPs-mediated water transport system in mice.

Abstract
Exosomes are extracellular vesicles primarily responsible for intercellular communication, and they contain nucleic acids and proteins. Exosome secretion has been observed in the intestines, suggesting their physiological effects on the receptor cells of target tissues. It is possible that intestinal epithelial cells recognize food components as ligands, resulting in exosome secretion. However, research on intestine-derived exosomes regulated by food ingredients is limited. In this study, Caco-2 cells were utilized as an intestinal epithelial model for proteomic profiling. NanoLC-MS/MS analysis revealed the alteration of exosome properties by epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in differentiated Caco-2 cells. This natural polyphenol reduced both the number and size of secreted exosomes and altered the expression of exosomal proteins. The enriched proteins in exosomes were involved in immune response and cell proliferation. In contrast, those in the EGCG-treated group had distinctive functions in the maintenance of skin homeostasis. We also found variable expression of galectin-3-binding protein and fibronectin as molecular signatures in exosomes derived from EGCG-treated cells. These results could help elucidate the expression and mechanism of exosomal proteins related to food components.

Abstract
Background: Tea consumption is widely reported to have beneficial effects on metabolic functions. The current study is to evaluate the association between habitual tea consumption and risk for metabolic syndrome and its components among Chinese adults aged 18~59 years. Methods: 43,757 participants aged 18~59 years from China Nutrition and Health Surveillance 2015–2017 were included and divided into four groups based on the amount of daily tea consumption in the current study. Using multiple-adjustment logistic regression to explore the relationship between habitual tea consumption and metabolic syndrome-related health outcomes. Results: Compared with those who did not consume tea habitually, participants who drank over 5 cups of tea per day showed a significantly lower risk of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.836, 95% CI = 0.771–0.905), blood pressure elevated (OR = 0.906, 95% CI = 0.845–0.972), triglyceride elevated (OR = 0.797, 95% CI = 0.741–0.857), and fasting plasma glucose elevated (OR = 0.772, 95% CI = 0.715–0.833), but higher risk for central obesity (OR = 1.354, 95% CI = 1.236–1.484). Regardless of gender, higher tea consumption was related to lower risk of triglyceride and fasting blood glucose elevated but higher risk for central obesity. While for protective effect on metabolic syndrome, blood pressure elevated, and HDL-C reduction only showed in females. Conclusions: Results from current study support that habitual tea consumption would benefit metabolic syndrome and its related components, especially among females.

Abstract
Tea is a popular traditional drink and has been reported to exhibit various health-promoting effects because of its abundance of polyphenols. Among all the tea products, fermented tea accounts for the majority of tea consumption worldwide. Microbiota plays an important role in the fermentation of tea, which involves a series of reactions that modify the chemical constituents and thereby affect the flavor and bioactivities of tea. In the present review, the microorganisms involved in fermented tea and tea extracts in the recent studies were summarized and the modulation effects of microorganisms on tea in fermentation, including polyphenols composition and content, biological activities and sensory characteristics, were also critically reviewed. It is expected that the data summarized could provide some references for the development of microbial fermented tea drinks with specific nutrition and health benefits.

Abstract
Strawberry leaves are considered a valuable waste material; so far, mainly due to their antioxidant properties. Since the annual production of this crop is high, our study aimed to thoroughly examine the chemical composition and antidiabetes-related bioactivity of Fragaria × ananassa leaf of its popular and productive cultivar Senga Sengana. Leaves from three different seasons, collected after fruiting, were extensively analyzed (UHPLC-qTOF-MS/MS, HPLC-DAD). Some individual components were isolated and quantified, including specific flavonol diglycosides (e.g., 3-O-[β-xylosyl(1‴→2″)]-β-glucuronosides). The separated quercetin glycosides were tested in an antiglycation assay, and their methylglyoxal uptake capacity was measured. In addition, the biodegradable polyester precursor 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC) was confirmed at relatively high levels, providing further opportunity for strawberry leaf utilization. We want to bring to the attention of the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries the Senga Sengana strawberry leaf as a new botanical raw material. It is rich in PDC, ellagitannins, and flavonols—potent glycation inhibitors.

Abstract
Phytonutrients are natural bioactive components present in the daily diet that can exert a positive impact on human health. Studies have shown that phytonutrients may act as antioxidants and improve metabolism after being ingested, which help to regulate physiological processes and prevent metabolic disorders and diseases. However, their efficacy is limited by their low bioavailability. The gut microbiota is symbiotic with humans and its abundance and profile are related to most diseases. Interestingly, studies have shown that the gut microbiota is associated with the metabolism of phytonutrients by converting them into small molecules that can be absorbed by the body, thereby enhancing their bioavailability. Furthermore, phytonutrients can modulate the composition of the gut microbiota, and therefore improve the host's health. Here, we focus on uncovering the mechanisms by which phytonutrients and gut microbiota play roles in health, and the interrelationships between phytonutrients and gut microbiota were summarized. We also reviewed the studies that reported the efficacy of phytonutrients in human health and the future directions.

Abstract
(-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a major polyphenol of green tea that possesses a wide variety of actions. EGCG acts as a strong antioxidant which effectively scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibits pro-oxidant enzymes including NADPH oxidase, activates antioxidant systems including superoxide dismutase, catalase, or glutathione, and reduces abundant production of nitric oxide metabolites by inducible nitric oxide synthase. ECGC also exerts potent anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, pro-apoptotic, anti-tumorous, and metabolic effects via modulation of a variety of intracellular signaling cascades. Based on this knowledge, the use of EGCG could be of benefit in respiratory diseases with acute or chronic inflammatory, oxidative, and fibrotizing processes in their pathogenesis. This article reviews current information on the biological effects of EGCG in those respiratory diseases or animal models in which EGCG has been administered, i.e., acute respiratory distress syndrome, respiratory infections, COVID-19, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung fibrosis, silicosis, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and lung embolism, and critically discusses effectiveness of EGCG administration in these respiratory disorders. For this review, articles in English language from the PubMed database were used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is evidence to suggest that green tea soy may have protective effects against prostate cancer, but there are several epidemiologic and clinical studies that did not identify such an effect. We tested the notion of protective effects in a rat model of prostate carcinogenesis that has been predictive of the effects of selenium and vitamin E in randomized clinical trials and a human prostate cancer xenograft model in nude mice and rat prostate tumor cells transplanted in immune-competent syngeneic animals. METHODS Prostate cancer was induced in rats with methylnitrosourea and testosterone and tumor incidence was determined. Subcutaneous tumor growth was measured resulting from injected cells isolated from rat prostate cancers grafted in syngeneic animals and from the prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-producing human prostate cancer PC346 xenografted in nude mice. Brewed decaffeinated green tea infusion or caffeinated green tea extract and the same 300 mg/ml concentration of caffeine were provided in drinking water of the rats and nude mice. RESULTS Caffeinated green tea extract and caffeine provided in drinking water did not modify the induction of prostate cancer in the rat model compared with control rats. The same drinking water treatments also did not affect the growth and PSA production of PC346 human prostate cancer xenografts in nude mice and the growth of two transplantable rat prostate cancer tumor lines in Wistar Firth rats. Brewed green tea infusion as drinking water did also not affect tumor growth in these xeno- and allograft models. CONCLUSION These animal studies with drinking water exposure to green tea and caffeine do not support the idea that green tea is protective against prostate cancer.

Abstract
Tea is a non-alcoholic drink containing various active ingredients, including tea polysaccharides (TPSs). TPSs have various biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, and anti-cancer activities. However, TPSs have a complex composition, which significantly limits the extraction and isolation methods, thus limiting their application. This paper provides insight into the composition, methodological techniques for isolation and extraction of the components, biological activities, and functions of TPSs, as well as their application prospects.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major green tea polyphenol, has beneficial effects on human health. This study aimed to elucidate the detailed EGCG sulfation process to better understand its phase II metabolism, a process required to maximize its health benefits. Results show that kinetic activity of sulfation in the human liver and intestinal cytosol is 2-fold and 60- to 300-fold higher than that of methylation and glucuronidation, respectively, suggesting sulfation as the key metabolic pathway. Moreover, SULT1A1 and SULT1A3 are responsible for sulfation in the liver and intestine, respectively. Additionally, our human ingestion study revealed that the concentration of EGCG-4″-sulfate in human plasma (Cmax: 177.9 nmol·L-1, AUC: 715.2 nmol·h·L-1) is equivalent to free EGCG (Cmax: 233.5 nmol·L-1, AUC: 664.1 nmol·h·L-1), suggesting that EGCG-4″-sulfate is the key metabolite. These findings indicate that sulfation is a crucial factor for improving EGCG bioavailability, while also advancing the understanding of the bioactivity and toxicity of EGCG.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of green tea on lipid profile, liver tissue damage, and oxidative stress in rats fed a diet including high fructose. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups: Control (C), Fructose (F), Green Tea (GT), and F+GT. F and F+GT groups were given 20% fructose in the drinking water for eight weeks. Green tea (2 mg kg−1) was administrated to GT and F+GT groups by oral gavage for eight weeks. Biochemical parameters in serum and oxidative stress markers in the liver were analysed. The liver sections were stained with haematoxylin-eosin. As of the 3rd week of the experiment, the body weight of rats in the F group showed a statistically significant increase in comparison with the F+GT group. The serum glucose and triglyceride levels of the F+GT group significantly decreased when compared with the F group. The fructose-induced degenerative changes in the liver were reduced with green tea. Green tea may serve a protective role against hyperlipidaemia and liver injury in rats fed a high fructose diet.

Abstract
Abstract The antioxidant activity in tea is largely driven by its polyphenolic content, however, the antioxidant reaction mechanism and the compounds involved are not well characterized. Therefore, in this study, we performed in-depth profiling of the antioxidant reaction mechanism of Green Tea (GT), Black Tea (BT), and their polyphenolic fractions with free radical using state-of-the-art analytical techniques. The polyphenol enriched fractions from GT and BT were isolated using column chromatography. Catechins were isolated and characterized by diverse spectroscopic techniques. Samples were screened for their antioxidant activity by HPTLC and further evaluated using a spectrophotometer. The free radical reactions with GT, BT, enriched fractions viz, GT Polyphenols (GTP), BT Polyphenols (BTP), and isolated catechins were studied using the 13C NMR technique. The highest polyphenol content was found in GTP (795.4 ± 0.012 mg/g) whereas GT (321.0 ± 0.028 mg/g) showed maximum flavonoids content. Individual catechins isolated from GTP were EGCG, ECG, EGC, EC and C. Antioxidant activity followed the order EGCG > ECG > EGC > EC > GTP > C > BTP > GT > BT. In GT, the antioxidant reaction mechanism showed single electron and H-transfer in all catechins, which involved the transformation of the hydroxyl group to the carbonyl group. Whereas in BT theaflavins, conversion of the benzotropolone ring to the six-membered ring was observed. Abstract
Tea is one of the most popular beverages and its leaves are rich in catechins, contributing to the diverse flavor as well as beneficial for human health. However, the study of the post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism affecting the synthesis of catechins remains insufficient. Here, we sequenced the transcriptome using PacBio sequencing technology and obtained 63,111 full-length high-quality isoforms, including 1302 potential novel genes and 583 highly reliable fusion transcripts. We also identified 1204 lncRNAs with high quality, containing 188 known and 1016 novel lncRNAs. In addition, 311 mis-annotated genes were corrected based on the high-quality Isoseq reads. A large number of alternative splicing (AS) events (3784) and alternative polyadenylation (APA) genes (18,714) were analyzed, accounting for 8.84% and 43.7% of the total annotated genes, respectively. We also found that 2884 genes containing AS and APA features exhibited higher expression levels than other genes. These genes are mainly involved in amino acid biosynthesis, carbon fixation in photosynthetic organisms, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan biosynthesis, and pyruvate metabolism, suggesting that they play an essential role in the catechins content of tea polyphenols. Our results further improved the level of genome annotation and indicated that post-transcriptional regulation plays a crucial part in synthesizing catechins.

Abstract
The goal of the current study was to evaluate the action of the green tea plant (Camellia sinensis, L) on male rabbit reproduction and some non-reproductive indexes. Male rabbits were fed either a standard diet (control group) or a diet enriched with green tea powder (experimental groups; E): 5 g (E1) or 20 g (E2) per 100 kg of the milled complete feed mixture. Weight gain, sperm concentration, total and progressive motility, as well as haematological, and biochemical parameters and changes in testicular tissue histomorphology were evaluated. Feeding with green tea, at both tested concentrations, decreased weight gain per week and the total average weight gain compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, green tea decreased sperm concentration, motility and progressive motility in the group fed with a lower dose (5 g) of green tea powder (p < 0.05), whilst a higher dose (20 g) was neutral. Some haematological and biochemical indexes, like medium-size cell count (MID), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), platelet percentage (PCT), levels of phosphorus (P) and total proteins (TP) were decreased in one or both experimental groups (p < 0.05), whilst the triglyceride level (TG) was increased in the E2 group (p < 0.05). The thicknesses of the testicular seminiferous tubules and epithelial layer were not affected by any concentration of green tea powder (p > 0.05). These observations suggest that green tea in the diet may have an adverse effect on rabbit growth and sperm quality, but their effect may be potentially dose-dependent.

Abstract
Introduction: Obesity is defined as an excess of accumulation of fat that can be harmful to health. Storage of excess fat in the adipose tissue triggers an inflammatory process, which makes obesity a low-grade chronic inflammatory disease. Obesity is considered a complex and multifactorial disease; hence, no intervention strategy appears to be an ideal treatment for all individuals. Therefore, new therapeutic alternatives are often studied for the treatment of this disease. Currently, herbal medicines are gaining ground in the treatment of obesity and its comorbidities. In this context, much attention is being paid to Cannabis sativa derivatives, and their therapeutic functions are being widely studied, including in treating obesity. Objective: Highlight the pharmacological properties of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), Δ9-tetrahydrocannabidinol (THC), and cannabidiol (CBD), the predominant isolated components of Cannabis sativa, as well as its therapeutic potential in the treatment of obesity. Methods: This is a narrative review that shows the existing scientific evidence on the clinical application of Cannabis sativa as a possible treatment for obesity. Data collection was performed in the PubMed electronic database. The following word combinations were used: Cannabis and obesity, Cannabis sativa and obesity, THCV and obesity, THC and obesity, CBD and obesity, and Cannabis sativa and inflammation. Results: Evidence shows that Cannabis sativa derivatives have therapeutic potential due to their anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, people who use cannabis have a lower body mass index than those who do not, making the plant an option to reduce and reverse inflammation and comorbidities in obesity. Conclusion: It is concluded that phytocannabinoids derived from Cannabis sativa have therapeutic potential due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties, making the plant a study option to reduce and reverse inflammation and comorbidities associated with obesity.

Abstract
Special Thai oolong tea is oolong tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) steamed with selected Thai botanical drugs. Oolong tea steamed with ginger (Zingiber officinale), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), and celery (Anathallis graveolens L.) is called eternity tea (EN), whereas peaceful rest (PR) tea is made of oolong tea leaves steamed with Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica), Turkey berry (Solanum torvum), and wild betel leaf bush leaves (Piper sarmentosum). Oolong tea is known for its numerous biological activities including antidiabetic properties. However, the effect of the additional botanical drugs on the biological activities of special oolong teas has not yet been explored. From the results, the PR extract exhibited the best activity in the in vitro assays relevant to antidiabetic properties such as chemical antioxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-adipogenesis, enzyme inhibition, and glucose uptake and consumption. The UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS profiles of PR and EN extracts indicated chemical profiles different from oolong tea. For instance, gingerdiol and gingerol were detected in EN, whereas piperettine I was detected in PR. Therefore, it was inferred that among the three tea extracts, the additional compounds in PR contributed to good activities compared to oolong and EN. It is also important to highlight that the PR extract inhibited glucose uptake and consumption by adipocytes and skeletal muscles at concentrations of 500 and 100 μg/ml, respectively, as well as metformin activity (p < 0.05). Findings from this study support the antidiabetic potential of PR tea.

Abstract
Tea market is currently oversupplied, and unsold tea often needs to be properly stored for a period of time. However, the chemical changes occurring in black tea during storage are limitedly understood. In this study, a comprehensive nontargeted and targeted metabolomics approach was used to investigate the dynamic changes in compounds in time-series (0-19 months)-stored black teas. The contents of flavanols, theaflavins (TFs), theasinensins, procyanidins, most phenolic acids, amino acids, quercetin-O-glycosides, and myricetin-O-glycosides decreased during storage, while the contents of N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-substituted flavanols, flavone-C-glycosides, and most kaempferol-O-glycosides increased. More importantly, four novel compounds strongly positively correlated with storage duration (r = 0.922-0.969) were structurally assigned as N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-substituted TFs and validated with synthetic reactions of TFs and theanine standards. The content of N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-substituted TFs was 51.54 μg/g in black tea stored for 19 months. To the best of our knowledge, N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-substituted TFs were discovered in tea for the first time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bisphenol A (BPA) is an artificial chemical widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Accumulating evidence indicates that BPA exposure is associated with metabolic disorders. The beneficial effects of green tea and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), major catechin present in green tea, on alleviating BPA-induced metabolic disorders have been shown in various studies. PURPOSE Protective effects of green tea extract and EGCG on BPA-induced metabolic disorders and possible underlying mechanisms were investigated. METHODS Rats were randomly divided into control, green tea extract (50 and 100 mg/kg, IP), EGCG (20 and 40 mg/kg, IP), BPA (10 mg/kg, gavage), BPA plus green tea extract (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, IP), BPA plus EGCG (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg, IP), and BPA plus vitamin E (200 IU/kg, IP). After two months, body weight, blood pressure, biochemical blood tests, hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione (GSH) were assessed. By enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, serum levels of insulin, leptin, adiponectin, TNFα, and IL-6, and by western blotting, hepatic insulin signaling (IRS-1, PI3K, Akt) were measured. RESULTS BPA increased body weight, blood pressure, and MDA, decreased GSH, elevated serum levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, insulin, leptin, TNFα, IL-6, and liver enzymes including alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase, and lowered high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and adiponectin levels. In western blot, decreased phosphorylation of IRS-1, PI3K, and Akt was obtained. Administration of green tea extract, EGCG, or vitamin E with BPA reduced the detrimental effects of BPA. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that green tea extract and EGCG can be effective in preventing or reducing metabolic disorders induced by BPA linked to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, regulating the metabolism of lipids, and improving insulin signaling pathways.

Abstract
Tea (Camellia sinensis) and herbal tea have been recognized as rich sources of bioactive constituents with the ability to exert antioxidant actions. The aims of this study were to analyze phenolic, carotenoid and saccharide contents in a set of Vietnamese tea and herbal tea and compare the results with those of green and black teas marketed in the U.S. In total, 27 phenolics, six carotenoids and chlorophylls, and three saccharides were quantitatively identified. Catechins, quercetin glycosides and chlorogenic acid were the predominating phenolics in the teas, with the concentrations following the order: jasmine/green teas > oolong tea > black tea. Lutein was the dominant carotenoid in the teas and its concentrations were generally found to be higher in the jasmine and green teas than in the oolong and black teas. The study showed that the green teas originating in Vietnam had much higher levels of phenolics and carotenoids than their counterparts stemming from another country. The application of partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) as a chemometric tool was able to differentiate phenolic profiles between methanolic extracts and tea infusions. Through principal component analysis (PCA), the similarities and dissimilarities among the jasmine, green, oolong, black teas and herbal teas were depicted.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is concomitant with significant morbidity and mortality and its prevalence is accumulative worldwide. The conventional antidiabetic agents are known to mitigate the symptoms of diabetes; however, they may also cause adverse effects. This study was to explore the efficacy of polyherbal dietary supplement cinnamon, purple onion, and tea on the mediation of postprandial hyperglycemia in the search of combinations with a maximal response. A starch solution (3 g/kg Bwt) of oral starch tolerance test (OSTT) and glucose solution (4 g/kg Bwt) of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with and without cinnamon, purple onion, tea extract (15 mg/kg Bwt), and mixture (each 5 mg/kg Bwt, 1:1:1), metformin (14 mg/kg Bwt), or acarbose (50 mg/kg Bwt) was administered to high fat plus high fructose-induced diabetic mice after an overnight fast. Postprandial plasma glucose levels were measured and changed areas under the response curve were calculated to find out the maximal efficacy of optimal polyherbal combinations. Compared with acarbose, the mixture of extracts (purple onion, cinnamon, and tea) indicated the decreasing blood glucose in OSTT. In OGTT, the mixture of extracts showed greater efficacy for hypoglycemia when compared with metformin. The molecular docking of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and AMPK was further confirmed the putatively acting molecules from the extracts of purple onion, cinnamon, and tea. Overall, this investigation evidenced a beneficial mediation for the progression of lowering blood glucose with a combinatory extract of cinnamon, dietary onion, and tea, implicating their prospective as nutraceuticals that might ameliorate hyperglycemia in diabetes. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Diabetes mellitus (DM), one of metabolic syndrome, attributes to risk factors like obesity, physical inactivity, ageing, life style, and genetic predisposition even with significant morbidity and mortality. DM is increasing and accounts for an estimated annual medical expenditure of US$ 827 billion worldwide. Therefore, maintaining blood glucose levels within the normal range is critical for preventing diabetes and its co-morbidities. The conventional antidiabetic agents are known to mitigate the symptoms of diabetes; nevertheless, they may also cause adverse or side effects. In an effort to design novel and well-tolerated solutions to halt the progression of DM, however evidence-base is extremely limited regarding the efficacy of polyherbal dietary supplement individual herbs for the management of glycemia. In this investigation evidenced a beneficial mediation for the progression of lowering blood glucose with a combinatory extract of cinnamon, dietary onion, and tea, implicating their prospective as nutraceuticals that might ameliorate hyperglycemia in diabetes.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols have been extensively studied for their preventive properties against cardiometabolic diseases. Nevertheless, the evidence of these effects from human intervention studies is not always consistent, mainly because of a large interindividual variability. The bioavailability of tea polyphenols is low, and metabolism of tea polyphenols highly depends on individual gut microbiota. The accompanying reciprocal relationship between tea polyphenols and gut microbiota may result in alterations in the cardiometabolic effects, however, the underlying mechanism of which is little explored. This review summarizes tea polyphenols-microbiota interaction and its contribution to interindividual variability in cardiometabolic effects. Currently, only a few bacteria that can biodegrade tea polyphenols have been identified and generated metabolites and their bioactivities in metabolic pathways are not fully elucidated. A deeper understanding of the role of complex interaction necessitates fully individualized data, the ntegration of multiple-omics platforms and development of polyphenol-centered databases. Knowledge of this microbial contribution will enable the functional stratification of individuals in the gut microbiota profile (metabotypes) to clarify interindividual variability in the health effects of tea polyphenols. This could be used to predict individual responses to tea polyphenols consumption, hence bringing us closer to personalized nutrition with optimal dose and additional supplementation of specific microorganisms.

Abstract
Dietary factors are thought to play an important role in the prevention of cognition diseases and depression in late life. In the present study, we compared the effects between the theogallin-rich tea cultivar, "MK5601" and a common Japanese tea cultivar, "Yabukita" on behaviors and hippocampal neurotrophin levels in experimental animals. Middle-aged mice (aged 8 mo) were given either of the tea infusions or water ad libitum for 4 mo. In the novel object location test, the middle-aged mice drinking water or "Yabukita" performed worse than young mice (aged 2-3 mo) although the middle-aged mice drinking "MK5601" retained spatial memory at the same level as the young mice. We also found that the middle-aged mice drinking "MK5601" showed high levels of neurotrophin-3 in the hippocampus. In conclusion, the "MK5601" tea infusion appears to be effective in preventing age-related changes in cognitive function, as compared with a common Japanese tea cultivar.

Abstract
Tea is one of the three most widely consumed beverages in the world, not only because of its unique flavor but also due to its various health benefits. The bioactive components in tea, such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, polypeptides, pigments, and alkaloids, are the main contributors to its health functions. Based on epidemiological surveys, the consumption of tea and its compounds in daily life has positive effects on cardiovascular diseases, cancers, hepatopathy, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. In experimental studies, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-obesity, cardiovascular protective, liver protective, and hypoglycemic activities of tea and the related mechanisms of action have been widely investigated. The regulation of several classical signaling pathways, such as nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK), and wingless/integrated (Wnt) signaling, is involved. Clinical trials have also demonstrated the potential of tea products to be applied as dietary supplements and natural medicines. In this paper, we reviewed and discussed the recent literature on the health benefits of tea and its compounds, and specifically explored the molecular mechanisms involved.

Abstract
Tea polysaccharide is a kind of acid glycoprotein complex extracted from tea. Tea polysaccharide has a variety of biological activities, especially the hypoglycemic effect is outstanding. It is good for human health. Tea polysaccharides have been extensively studied over the past few decades. The advantages and disadvantages of water extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction were described. At the same time, the structure and biological activity of tea polysaccharide were also summarized. The development of tea polysaccharide was prospected.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant polyphenol in green tea. Our previous report showed that induced hormesis was a critical determinant for the promotion of a healthy lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans. In the present study, we investigated the anti-aging effects of the main active ingredients in green tea. We found that galloylated catechins (EGCG and epicatechin gallate) could extend the lifespan of C. elegans, while their metabolites (gallic acid, epicatechin, and epigallocatechin) could not. Interestingly, the combination with theanine, not caffeine, could alleviate the adverse effects induced by high-dose EGCG, including the promotion of lifespan and locomotor ability. This was due to the attenuation of the excess production of reactive oxygen species and the activation of DAF-16. These findings will facilitate further studies on the health benefits of tea active components and their interactions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze clinical feature and information of medication to explore the risk signals of preparations containing Psoraleae Fructus (BGZP) related with hepatobiliary adverse drug reactions (ADR), in order to reinforce pharmacovigilance. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted based on hepatobiliary ADR related with BGZP from the China Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring System in years from January 2012 to December 2016. Serious and general ADRs were analyzed and assessed. RESULTS There were 355 cases of hepatobiliary ADR related to BGZP. Both the amount of cases and the proportion of serious ADR showed an increasing growth by years (P<0.05). It was found that 10.43% of 355 cases may be involved with irrational drug use, including overdose, repeated medication, and combination of multiple drugs. There were 190 cases which used BGZP (non-combination), and they were mainly for common in diseases caused by abnormal immune activation (accounting for 40.53% of the total cases). Especially at the age group with the most cases with age of 41-50 years, the cases associated with immunological diseases of female were obviously more than that of male (P<0.05). The latency of hepatobiliary ADR related to BGZP ranged from 1 to 386 days, and the median latency was 27.5 days, along with the range of cumulative dose (0.45-520.02 g) as well as the daily dose (0.09-2.64 g/d) after the conversion. CONCLUSIONS Cases of hepatobiliary ADR related to BGZP showed significant individual differences, and there was no correlation between drug usage duration and dosage and the occurrence of hepatobiliary ADR. It may be similar with idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury, and recommended that BGZP should be used with more caution under monitoring liver function, especially in female patients with immunological diseases.

Abstract
This paper reviews provenance, chemical composition and properties of tea (Camelia sinensis L.) and coffee (Coffee arabica, L. and Coffeacaniphora, L.), their general health effects, as well as the currently available knowledge concerning their action on fat storage, physiological mechanisms of their effects, as well as their safety and recommended dosage for treatment of obesity. Both tea and coffee possess the ability to promote health and to prevent, to mitigate and to treat numerous disorders. This ability can be partially due to presence of caffeine in both plants. Further physiological and medicinal effects could be explained by other molecules (theaflavins, catechins, their metabolites and polyphenols in tea and polyphenol chlorogenic acid in coffee). These plants and plant molecules can be efficient for prevention and treatment of numerous metabolic disorders including metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Both plants and their constituents can reduce fat storage through suppression of adipocyte functions, and support of gut microbiota. In addition, tea can prevent obesity via reduction of appetite, food consumption and food absorption in gastrointestinal system and through the changes in fat metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glioblastoma multiforme is one of the most heterogenous primary brain tumor with high mortality. Nevertheless, of the current therapeutic approaches, survival rate remains poor with 12 to 15 months following preliminary diagnosis, this warrants the need for effective treatment modality. Wnt/β-catenin pathway is presumably the most noteworthy pathway up-regulated in almost 80% GBM cases contributing to tumor-initiation, progression and survival. Therefore, therapeutic strategies targeting key components of Wnt/β-catenin cascade using established genotoxic agents like temozolomide and pharmacological inhibitors would be an effective approach to modulate Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Recently, drug repurposing by means of effective combination therapy has gained importance in various solid tumors including GBM, by targeting two or more proteins in a single pathway, thereby possessing the ability to overcome the hurdle implicated by chemo-resistance in GBM. OBJECTIVE In this context, by employing computational tools, an attempt has been carried out to speculate the novel combinations against Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. METHODS We have explored the binding interactions of three conventional drugs namely temozolomide, metformin, chloroquine along with three natural compounds viz., epigallocatechin gallate, naringenin and phloroglucinol on the major receptors of Wnt/β-catenin signaling. RESULTS It was noted that all the experimental compounds possessed profound interaction with the two major receptors of Wnt/β-catenin pathway. CONCLUSION To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to characterize the combined interactions of the afore-mentioned drugs on Wnt/β-catenin signaling in silico and this will putatively open up new avenues for combination therapies in GBM treatment.

Abstract
Pu-erh tea is a post-fermentation tea with unique flavor and multiple health benefits. Due to the various microorganisms involved in the post-fermentation process, Pu-erh tea contains highly complex components, which have rich interactions with the gut microbiomes (GMs). Because the structure and homeostasis of GMs are closely related to human wellness and the various diseases progress, the beneficial effects of Pu-erh tea on GMs have a great potential for application in health care. However, there is no systematic summary of the bioactive components of Pu-erh tea, and their effects on the GMs. Here, we review the current studies on the effects of Pu-erh tea and its bioactive components on the structure of GMs as well as on health improvement, and further discuss the relevant quality indicators. This "components - function - indicators" clue will hopefully stimulate the standardization of Pu-erh tea fermentation process and the development of its functional products.

Abstract
Sargassum horneri (S. horneri) is a well-known brown seaweed widely distributed worldwide. Several biological activities of S. horneri have been reported. However, its effects on lipid metabolism and the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In the present study, we examined the inhibitory effect of the active compound "(-)-loliolide ((6S,7aR)-6-hydroxy-4,4,7a-trimethyl-5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-1-benzofuran-2(4H)-one (HTT))" from S. horneri extract on lipid accumulation in differentiated adipocytes. MTT assays demonstrated that (-)-loliolide is not toxic to 3T3-L1 adipocytes in a range of concentrations. (-)-loliolide significantly reduced intracellular lipid accumulation in the differentiated phase of 3T3-L1 adipocytes as shown by Oil Red O staining. Western blot analysis revealed that (-)-loliolide increased the expression of lipolytic protein phospho-hormone-sensitive lipase (p-HSL) and thermogenic protein peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1). Additionally, (-)-loliolide decreased expression of adipogenic and lipogenic proteins, including sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-α (C/EBP-α), and fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. These results indicate that (-)-loliolide from S. horneri could suppress lipid accumulation via regulation of antiadipogenic and prolipolytic mechanisms in 3T3-L1 cells. Considering the multifunctional effect of (-)-loliolide, it can be useful as a lipid-lowering agent in the management of patients who suffer from obesity.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the major health hazards and an epidemic worldwide. There is no known best remedy has been defined yet. In the current investigation, we designed a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to evaluate the beneficial effects of tea consumption in alleviating metabolic syndromes. Herein, we accumulated the relevant literature available on PubMed and EMBASE databases from January, 2000 to August, 2019. RCTs bearing impact factor of at least 1 or more were studied for the effect of tea consumption on MetS. This meta-analysis suggested that tea consumption has beneficial effects on diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and this finding was characterized of all types of tea in the current study and also for body mass index (BMI) value. Furthermore, this analysis also found that black tea consumption has protective effects on systolic SBP, green tea reduces the incidence of diabetes and lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. These functions required BMI value at least 28 or higher. The meta data led us to conclude that tea consumption have protective effects on MetS, however, different types of tea might have different protective mechanisms on MetS, but, exact mechanisms are not yet clear and needs to be explored.

Abstract
Purpose Theabrownin (TB), a main pigment and bioactive component of tea, has been shown anti-tumor activities against carcinomas, but its effects on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. Methods Hepatocellular carcinoma Huh7 cells were used for analyses. Cell viability assay was performed to determine TB′s anti-proliferative effect, and flow cytometry with annexin V-FITC/PI double staining and DAPI staining were performed to determine its pro-apoptotic effect. Real-time PCR and Western blot assays were conducted to detect the molecular actions of TB. And a xenograft model of zebrafishes was established to evaluate the in vivo effect of TB. SP600125 (JNK inhibitor) was in vivo and in vitro used to verify the regulatory role of the JNK signaling pathway in the anti-hepatic carcinoma mechanism of TB. Results TB exerted significant anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects on Huh7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The molecular data showed that TB up-regulated the gene expressions of NOXA, PUMA, P21, Bax, and Bim and up-regulated the protein expressions of ASK-1, Bax, phosphorylated JNK, and phosphorylated c-Jun with down-regulation of Bcl-2. The in vivo data showed that TB exerted significant tumor-inhibitory effect which was even stronger than that of cis-platinum. Furthermore, the JNK inhibitor significantly weakened TB′s effects both in vivo and in vitro and blocked the related molecular pathway. Conclusion TB exerts anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, and tumor-inhibitory effects on Huh7 cells through activation of the JNK signaling pathway. For the first time, this study provides new evidence of anti-HCC effects and mechanism of TB.
