Abstract
Upon dietary administration, probiotic microorganisms can reach as live cells the human gut, where they interact with the microbiota and host cells, thereby exerting a beneficial impact on host functions, mainly through immune-modulatory activities. Recently, attention has been drawn by postbiotics, i.e. non-viable probiotic microbes, including their metabolic products, which possess biological activities that benefit the host. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is a bacterial species that comprises recognised probiotic strains. In this study, we investigated in vitro the probiotic (and postbiotic) potential of seven L. plantarum strains, including five newly isolated from plant-related niches. The strains were shown to possess some basic probiotic attributes, including tolerance to the gastrointestinal environment, adhesion to the intestinal epithelium and safety. Besides, their cell-free culture supernatants modulated cytokine patterns in human macrophages in vitro, promoting TNF-α gene transcription and secretion, while attenuating the transcriptional activation and secretion of both TNF-α and IL-8 in response to a pro-inflammatory signal, and enhancing the production of IL-10. Some strains induced a high IL-10/IL-12 ratio that may correlate to an anti-inflammatory capacity in vivo. Overall, the investigated strains are good probiotic candidates, whose postbiotic fraction exhibits immunomodulatory properties that need further in vivo studies. The main novelty of this work consists in the polyphasic characterisation of candidate beneficial L. plantarum strains obtained from relatively atypical plant-associated niches, by an approach that explores both probiotic and postbiotic potentials, in particular studying the effect of microbial culture-conditioned media on cytokine pattern, analysed at both transcriptional and secretion level in human macrophages.

Abstract
Sepsis treatment is a challenging condition due to its complexity, which involves host inflammatory responses to a severe and potentially fatal infection, associated with organ dysfunction. The aim of this study was to analyze the scientific literature on the immunomodulatory effects of glucans in a murine model of systemic infection induced by cecal ligation and puncture. This study comprises an integrative literature review based on systematic steps, with searches carried out in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases. In most studies, the main type of glucan investigated was β-glucan, at 50 mg/kg, and a reduction of inflammatory responses was identified, minimizing the occurrence of tissue damage leading to increased animal survival. Based on the data obtained and discussed in this review, glucans represent a promising biotechnological alternative to modulate the immune response and could potentially be used in the clinical management of septic individuals.

Abstract
The present study investigated the potential role of Bacillus subtilis as probiotic in striped catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus). Fish (initial weight = 150.00±2.63g n = 180) were stocked in circular tanks. Four isonitrogenous (30%) and isolipidic (3.29%) diets were formulated having supplementation of B. subtilis at four different levels (P0; 0, P1: 1×106, P2: 1×108 and P3: 1×1010 CFU/g). Each treatment had three replicates, while each replicate had fifteen fish. The trial started on second week of July and continued for eight weeks. Growth, feed conversion ratio, crude protein content, the concentration of amylase and protease, the profile of both dispensable and non-dispensable amino acids in all four dietary groups increased with a gradual increase of B. subtilis in the diet. At the end of growth experiment, fish in all four groups were exposed to Staphylococcus aureus (5×105 CFU/ml). After S. aureus challenge, fish fed with B. subtilis responded better to damage caused by reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation and better survival rate. The catalase and superoxide dismutase level also increased in response to bacterial challenge in B. subtilis fed groups. On the other hand, the concentration of malondialdehyde gradually decreased in these groups (+ve P0 >P1>P2>P3). It is concluded that supplementation of B. subtilis as a probiotic improved the growth, protein content, antioxidant response and immunocompetency against S. aureus in striped catfish. The optimum dosage of B. subtilis, at a concentration of 1×1010 CFU/g, resulted in the most favorable outcomes in striped catfish. This single bacterial strain can be used as an effective probiotic in large scale production of aquafeed for striped catfish. Future studies can investigate this probiotic's impact in the intensive culture of the same species.

Abstract
Synbiotics are the specific mixtures of prebiotics with probiotics intended to give health benefits to the host by stabilizing and supporting the gut microbiota.The prebiotic substance used in the synbiotics selectively favors the growth and metabolite production of probiotics. Gut microbiome dysbiosis may lead to generation and progression of various chronic diseases. Synbiotics act synergistically to modulate the gut ecosystem for improvement of metabolic health of the host. Probiotics have been found promising against various diseases being safer, effective, as an alternative or combinatorial therapy. Specific combinations of probiotics with suitable prebiotic substrate as synbiotics, may be the more effective therapeutic agents that can provide all benefits of probiotics as well as prebiotics. Though, effective combinations, dosage, mechanism of action, safety, cost effectiveness and other clinical investigations are required to be established along with other relevant aspects. Synbiotics have the potential to be functional food of importance in future. Present review summarizes the mechanistic overview of synbiotics related to gut microbiota, therapeutic potential and promising health benefits for human illnesses according to the available literature. In present scenario, synbiotics are more promising future alternatives as therapeutics to maintain healthy microbiota inside the host gut which directly affects the onset or development ofrelated disorders or diseases.

Abstract
Honey is a valuable reservoir of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and, particularly, of fructophilic LAB (FLAB), a relatively novel subgroup of LAB whose functional potential for human and food application has yet to be explored. In this study, FLAB and LAB strains have been isolated from honeys of different floral origins and selected for their broad antimicrobial activity against typical foodborne pathogenic bacteria and spoilage filamentous fungi. The best candidates, two strains belonging to the species Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Fructobacillus fructosus, were submitted to partial characterisation of their cell free supernatants (CFS) in order to identify the secreted metabolites with antimicrobial activity. Besides, these strains were examined to assess some major functional features, including in vitro tolerance to the oro-gastrointestinal conditions, potential cytotoxicity against HT-29 cells, adhesion to human enterocyte-like cells and capability to stimulate macrophages. Moreover, when the tested strains were applied on table grapes artificially contaminated with pathogenic bacteria or filamentous fungi, they showed a good ability to antagonise the growth of undesired microbes, as well as to survive on the fruit surface at a concentration that is recommended to develop a probiotic effect. In conclusion, both LAB and FLAB honey-isolated strains characterised in this work exhibit functional properties that validate their potential use as biocontrol agents and for the design of novel functional foods. We reported antimicrobial activity, cytotoxic evaluation, probiotic properties and direct food application of a F. fructosus strain, improving the knowledge of this species, in particular, and on FLAB, more generally.

Abstract
Beta-glucan (BG), a polysaccharide comprised of interfacing glucose monomers joined via beta-glycosidic linkages, can be defined as a type of dietary fiber with high specificity based on its interaction with the gut microbiota. It can induce similar interindividual microbiota responses, thereby having beneficial effects on the human body. In this paper, we review the four main sources of BG (cereals, fungi, algae, and bacteria) and their differences in structure and content. The interaction of BG with gut microbiota and the resulting health effects have been highlighted, including immune enhancement, regulation of serum cholesterol and insulin levels, alleviation of obesity and improvement of cognitive disorders. Finally, the application of BG in food products and its beneficial effects on the gut microbiota of consumers were discussed. Although some of the mechanisms of action remain unclear, revealing the beneficial functions of BG from the perspective of gut microbiota can help provide theoretical support for the development of diets that target the regulation of microbiota.

Exploring the Probiotic Potential of Dairy Industrial-Relevant Lactobacilli. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Usually, the search for new candidate probiotics starts from strain isolation, followed by genotypic and phenotypic characterisations. For the best candidates, the final selection criteria, i.e., an efficient biomass production and the survival to stressful conservation processes, may often represent a bottleneck. The aim of this study is to reverse this classic bottom-up approach, thereby evaluating the in vitro probiotic properties of microbes that are already commercialized and employed in the dairy sector. The major advantage of reversing the traditional scheme is to deal with strains that are already suitable for the scale-up at the industrial level. In this work, four lactobacilli strains were analysed, belonging to the species of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (strains PLA and PLA2) and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (strains PAR4 and RHM). Both L. plantarum strains showed the best survival under simulated oro-gastrointestinal stress; PLA and PAR4 had the strongest inhibitory activity against all the tested harmful bacteria, with the latter strain showing also the highest percentage of Caco-2 adhesion; RHM was the best biofilm producer on abiotic surface. Finally, cell-free surnatants from all the strain cultures exhibited anti-inflammatory action on THP-1 macrophages. For all the studied strains, it is possible to claim beneficial functional properties other than the technological ones for which they are already marketed. The possible use of the four strains in a mixture could represent a strategy to diversify and maximize their beneficial potential. Nonetheless, future studies are necessary to validate in vivo the observed beneficial properties and to evaluate any effect of the vehicle product on the probiotic aptitude.

Abstract
Chronic low-grade inflammation (CLGI) is closely associated with various chronic diseases. Researchers have paid attention to the comprehensive application and development of food materials with potential anti-inflammatory activity. Owing to their abundant nutrients and biological activities, coarse cereals have emerged as an important component of human diet. Increasing evidence has revealed their potential protective effects against CLGI in chronic conditions. However, this property has not been systematically discussed and summarized. In the present work, numerous published reports were reviewed to systematically analyze and summarize the protective effects of coarse cereals and their main active ingredients against CLGI. Their current utilization state was investigated. The future prospects, such as the synergistic effects among the active compounds in coarse cereals and the biomarker signatures of CLGI, were also discussed. Coarse cereals show promise as food diet resources for preventing CLGI in diseased individuals. Their active ingredients, including β-glucan, resistant starch, arabinoxylan, phenolic acids, flavonoids, phytosterols and lignans, function against CLGI through multiple possible intracellular signaling pathways and immunomodulatory effects. Therefore, coarse cereals play a crucial role in the food industry due to their health effects on chronic diseases and are worthy of further development for possible application in modulating chronic inflammation.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of β-glucanase on the modulation of jejunal mucosa-associated microbiota in relation to nutrient digestibility and intestinal health of pigs fed diets with 30% corn distiller's dried grains with solubles and xylanase. Forty pigs at 12.4 ± 0.5 kg body weight (BW) were allotted in a randomized complete block design with initial BW and sex as blocks. Dietary treatments consisted of a basal diet with xylanase (1,500 endo-pentosanase units [EPU]/kg) and increasing levels of β-glucanase (0, 200, 400, and 600 U/kg) meeting nutrient requirements and fed to pigs for 21 d. Blood samples were collected on day 19. On day 21, all pigs were euthanized to collect intestinal tissues and digesta. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin (IL)-6, and malondialdehyde were measured in the plasma and mid-jejunal mucosa. Viscosity was determined using digesta from the distal jejunum. Ileal and rectal digesta were evaluated to determine apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients. Mucosa samples from the mid-jejunum were utilized for microbiota sequencing. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure on SAS 9.4. Overall, increasing dietary β-glucanase tended to increase (linear; P = 0.077) the average daily gain of pigs. Increasing dietary β-glucanase affected (quadratic; P < 0.05) the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes, reduced (linear; P < 0.05) Helicobacter rappini, and increased (linear, P < 0.05) Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. β-Glucanase supplementation (0 vs. others) tended to increase (P = 0.096) the AID of crude protein in the diet, whereas increasing dietary β-glucanase tended to increase (linear; P = 0.097) the ATTD of gross energy in the diet and increased (linear; P < 0.05) the concentration of IL-6 in the plasma of pigs. In conclusion, increasing β-glucanase up to 600 U/kg feed in a diet containing xylanase (1,500 EPU/kg) modulated mucosa-associated microbiota by increasing the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria and reducing potentially harmful bacteria. Furthermore, increasing β-glucanase up to 600 U/kg feed in a diet containing xylanase (1,500 EPU/kg feed) enhanced the status of the intestinal environment and nutrient utilization, as well as reduced systemic inflammation of pigs, collectively resulting in moderate improvement of growth performance. Supplementing β-glucanase at a range of 312 to 410 U/kg with xylanase at 1,500 EPU/kg feed showed the most benefit on jejunal mucosa-associated microbiota and reduced systemic inflammation of pigs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of Crohn's disease (CD) is increasing worldwide, and it has currently become a serious public health issue in society. The treatment of CD continues throughout a patient's lifetime, and therefore, it is necessary to develop new, effective treatment methods, including dietotherapy. The present study aimed to determine the effects of consumption of oat beta-glucans with different molar mass on colon inflammation (colitis) in the early stages of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced CD in an animal model. METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats (control and TNBS-induced CD) were divided into three dietary groups and fed for 3 days (reflecting acute inflammation) or 7 days (reflecting remission) with a feed containing 1% low (βGl) or high (βGh) molar mass oat beta-glucan or a feed without this polysaccharide. The level of colon inflammatory markers and the expression of cytokines and their receptor genes were measured by ELISA and RT-PCR methods, respectively. RESULTS Acute inflammation or remission (3 or 7 days after TNBS administration, respectively) stages of experimentally induced CD were characterized by an increase in the level of inflammatory markers (IL-1, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, TNF-α, CRP, MPO, COX, and PGE2) and the disruption of some cytokine signaling pathways as well as macro- and microscopic changes of colon tissue. The consumption of oat beta-glucans reduced the level of inflammatory markers and recovered the signaling pathways and histological changes, with stronger effects of βGl after 7 days of colitis. CONCLUSIONS Dietary oat beta-glucans can reduce colitis at the molecular and organ level and accelerate CD remission.

Abstract
One of the main targets of sustainable development is the reduction of environmental, social, and economic negative externalities associated with the production of foods and beverages. Those externalities occur at different stages of food chains, from the farm to the fork, with deleterious impacts to different extents. Increasing evidence testifies to the potential of microbial-based solutions and fermentative processes as mitigating strategies to reduce negative externalities in food systems. In several cases, innovative solutions might find in situ applications from the farm to the fork, including advances in food matrices by means of tailored fermentative processes. This viewpoint recalls the attention on microbial biotechnologies as a field of bioeconomy and of ‘green’ innovations to improve sustainability and resilience of agri-food systems alleviating environmental, economic, and social undesired externalities. We argue that food scientists could systematically consider the potential of microbes as ‘mitigating agents’ in all research and development activities dealing with fermentation and microbial-based biotechnologies in the agri-food sector. This aims to conciliate process and product innovations with a development respectful of future generations’ needs and with the aptitude of the systems to overcome global challenges.

Abstract
The prebiotic effect of high β-glucan barley (HGB) flour on the innate immune system of high-fat model mice was investigated. C57BL/6J male mice were fed a high-fat diet supplemented with HGB flour for 90 days. Secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) in the cecum and serum were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Real-time PCR was used to determine mRNA expression levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-10 and IL-6 in the ileum as well as the composition of the microbiota in the cecum. Concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and organic acids were analyzed by GC/MS. Concentrations of sIgA in the cecum and serum were increased in the HGB group compared to the control. Gene expression levels of IL-10 and polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) significantly increased in the HGB group. HGB intake increased the bacterial count of microbiota, such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. Concentrations of propionate and lactate in the cecum were increased in the HGB group, and a positive correlation was found between these organic acids and the IL-10 expression level. Our findings showed that HGB flour enhanced immune function such as IgA secretion and IL-10 expression, even when the immune system was deteriorated by a high-fat diet. Moreover, we found that HGB flour modulated the gut microbiota, which increased the concentration of SCFAs, thereby stimulating the immune system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated whether the knock out of small heat shock protein (sHSP) genes (hsp1, hsp2 and hsp3) impact on probiotic features of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum WCFS1, aiming to find specific microbial effectors involved in microbe-host interplay. RESULTS The probiotic properties of L. plantarum WCFS1 wild type, hsp1, hsp2 and hsp3 mutant clones were evaluated and compared through in vitro trials. Oro-gastro-intestinal assays pointed to significantly lower survival for hsp1 and hsp2 mutants under stomach-like conditions, and for hsp3 mutant under intestinal stress. Adhesion to human enterocyte-like cells was similar for all clones, though the hsp2 mutant exhibited higher adhesiveness. L. plantarum cells attenuated the transcriptional induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines on lipopolysaccharide-treated human macrophages, with some exception for the hsp1 mutant. Intriguingly, this clone also induced a higher IL10/IL12 ratio, which is assumed to indicate the anti-inflammatory potential of probiotics. CONCLUSIONS sHSP genes deletion determined some differences in gut stress resistance, cellular adhesion and immuno-modulation, also implying effects on in vivo interaction with the host. HSP1 might contribute to immunomodulatory mechanisms, though additional experiments are necessary to test this feature.

Abstract
Coarse cereals (CC) refer to cereal grains except for rice and wheat which are highly-valued as functional foods with nutritional and pharmacological properties. Owing to their diverse positive effect on chronic diseases, coarse cereals exert a vital role in food industry. CC and the main contents prevent tumor pathogenesis through promoting apoptosis, inducing cell cycle arrest as well as modulating metastasis initiation. Meanwhile, CC ameliorates cardiovascular diseases through affecting multiple pathways, such as CaMKII/p-BFAF-3, NF-κB, MAPK, PI3K/Akt, etc. Besides, CC and the main contents have potential as prebiotics which facilitating the activities and growth of probiotics such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus. However, there's a lack of report on CC' beneficial properties and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Here this article explains in detail, the effect and mechanism of CC on chronic diseases like tumor, inflammation and cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Los alimentos a los que se les añaden probióticos (bacterias benéficas) constituyen uno de los sectores más importantes de los alimentos funcionales. Los productos lácteos son los principales vehículos para estas bacterias que producen un efecto benéfico a la salud, cuando se consumen vivas y en cantidades suficientes para adherirse al colon. Sin embargo, cada día crece el interés por desarrollar alimentos no lácteos como vehículo para probióticos. Los productos de origen vegetal son una buena alternativa para estas innovaciones. Tienen la ventaja de que son muy aceptados y accesibles para la población. Adicionalmente, representan una alternativa de consumo para poblaciones con dietas restringidas. Sin embargo, la incorporación de probióticos a estos productos requiere considerar varios criterios y vencer retos tecnológicos con la finalidad de conservarlos funcionalmente activos.

Abstract
P. oleracea L. contains high level of nutrients and biologically active compounds. Recently, lactic fermentation has been proposed as a biotechnological option to enrich the profile of biogenic compounds of Portulaca oleracea L. puree. This study investigated the capability of fermentation by selected lactic acid bacteria to enhance the restoring features of Portulaca oleracea juice towards intestinal inflammation and epithelial injury. Lactic acid fermentation markedly increased the total antioxidant capacity of P. oleracea juice, preserved the inherent levels of vitamins C, A, and E, and increased the bioavailability of the level of vitamin B2 and that of phenolics. The effects of fermented P. oleracea juice on a Caco-2 cell line were investigated using an in vitro model closest to the in vivo conditions. Fermented P. oleracea juice strongly decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators and reactive oxygen species. It also counteracted the disruption of the Caco-2 cell monolayers treated with the inflammatory stimulus. We used a diversified spectrum of lactic acid bacteria species, and some effects appeared to be strains- or species-specific. Fermentation with Lactobacillus kunkeei B7 ensured the best combination for the content of bioactive compounds and the ability to counteract the intestinal inflammation and epithelial injury.

Abstract
The immunological enhancement characteristics of the immunopotentiator CVC1302 were evaluated for foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) inactivated vaccine in pigs. Eight-week-old piglets were vaccinated with the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine alone (FMD-vaccine group) or with the addition of CVC1302 (FMD-CVC1302 group), and the serum liquid phase blocking ELISA (LPB-ELISA) antibody titers, IgG1 and IgG2 levels, and the levels of four cytokines secreted by peripheral blood lymphocytes were measured at 28 days post vaccination (dpv). In the FMD-CVC1302 group, the LPB-ELISA antibody titers, IgG1, and IgG2 titers, and IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, and IFN-γ levels at 28 dpv were significantly higher than those in the FMD-vaccine group. The FMD-CVC1302 group had long-lasting antibody titers (>7.8 log2), lasting for at least 6 months. In addition, piglets were vaccinated with or without addition of CVC1302 to the FMD vaccine at three different doses (1, 1/3, and 1/9 of the standard vaccine dose) and the serum LPB-ELISA antibody and serum neutralizing (SN) antibody titers were detected at 28 dpv. Then all pigs were challenged with virulent FMDV for PD50 value, and the levels of FMDV-specific RNA copies for the two full-dose groups at 3 and 10 days post challenge (dpc) were measured. The LPB-ELISA and SN antibody titers for the three doses in the FMD-CVC1302 groups were significantly higher than those in the FMD-vaccine groups at the same doses (p < 0.05). Post-virus challenge, the FMDV-specific RNA copy number in the FMD-CVC1302 group was lower than that in the FMD-vaccine group at 3 and 10 dpc. The PD50 value was 15.85 for the FMD-CVC1302 group, which was obviously higher than that for the FMD-vaccine group (10.96), and in the 1/9-dose of FMD-vaccine group only 3/5 pigs were protected. These results indicate that CVC1302 can enhance the immune efficacy and protective ability of the FMD vaccine in pigs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Intestinal mucositis (IM) is a local inflammatory response that causes alterations of the intestinal structure that in turn affect nutrient absorption and a side effect that is commonly associated with cancer treatments. Lactobacillus plantarum CRL2130 is a riboflavin-overproducing strain that has previously been shown to provide antiinflammatory properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of this riboflavin-producing strain in a chemically induced murine mucositis model. METHODS Mucositis was induced by daily injections of 5-fluororacil (5-FU) after which mice were either given L. plantarum CRL2130, CRL725 (strain from which CRL2130 was derived that does not overproduce riboflavin), or commercial riboflavin twice daily during 6 d of chemotherapy agent injections. The effect of the strains and riboflavin was also evaluated in vitro using Caco-2 intestinal cancer cell cultures to determine if they interfere with 5-FU's anticancer activity. RESULTS The administration of L. plantarum CRL2130 significantly attenuated the pathologic changes induced by 5-FU in mice such as body weight loss, diarrhea, shortening of villus height, increases in proinflammatory cytokine concentrations, and elevated production of interleukin 10. In vitro assays using Caco-2 cells showed that the effectiveness of 5-FU was not affected by L. plantarum CRL2130 and that this strain exerted an inhibitory mechanism against oxidative stress. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that the riboflavin-overproducing strain L. plantarum CRL2130 could be useful to prevent mucositis during cancer treatments and would not affect the primary treatment.

Abstract
ABSTRACT: Recently, glutamine and β-glucan have been demonstrated to play an important role in modulation of the immune system and in promoting intestinal health benefits. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of this intervention on inflammatory responses and intestinal health in mice orally pretreated with soluble Saccharomyces cerevisiae derived 1,3/1,6-β-glucan (80mg/kg) with or without glutamine (150mg/kg) and then challenged with cytarabine (Ara-C) (15mg/kg). Improvements in villi and crypts were not observed in the β-glucan group. The intestinal morphometry in the glutamine group showed the best results. β-glucan in combination with glutamine presented the highest values of IL-1β and IL-10 and lowest values for leukocytes and INF-γ. Based on these results, combined β-glucan and glutamine pretreatment reduced intestinal inflammation and improved the immune response after Ara-C challenge.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are idiopathic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract characterised by recurrent inflammation that require lifelong treatments. It has been shown that certain strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can produce specific health-promoting compounds in foods or in the gastrointestinal tract that can in turn prevent and/or treat IBD. This study was designed to evaluate the possible therapeutic potential of soymilk fermented by the riboflavin-producing strain Lactobacillus plantarum CRL 2130 in a trinitrobenzene sulfonic induced colitis mouse model. Mice that received soymilk fermented by L. plantarum CRL 2130 showed a decrease in weight loss, lower damage scores in their large intestines, lower microbial translocation to liver and decreased cytokines levels in their intestinal fluids compared to animals that received unfermented soymilk or soymilk fermented by a non-riboflavin-producing L. plantarum strain. This is the first report that demonstrates that a riboflavin-producing LAB was able to prevent experimental colitis in a murine model.
