Effects of steam explosion pretreatment on the digestive properties and gut microbiota of Laminaria japonica polysaccharide

BACKGROUND

Laminaria japonica polysaccharide, which is an important bioactive substance of Laminaria japonica with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In this study, the molecular weight, functional groups and surface morphology were investigated to evaluate the digestive properties of Laminaria japonica polysaccharide before and after steam explosion.

RESULTS

The results indicated that the Laminaria japonica polysaccharide entered the large intestine to be utilized by the gut microbiota after passing through the oral, gastric and small intestinal. Meanwhile, Laminaria japonica polysaccharide of steam explosion promoted the growth of beneficial bacteria Phascolarctobacterium and Intestinimonas, and increased the content of acetic, propionic and butyric acids, which was 2.29-folds, 2.60-folds and 1.63-folds higher than the control group after 48 h of fermentation.

CONCLUSION

This study reveals that the effect of steam explosion pretreatment on the digestion in vitro and gut microbiota of Laminaria japonica polysaccharide will provide a basic theoretical basis for the potential application of Laminaria japonica polysaccharide as a prebiotic in the food industry. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Digestive characteristics of Gastrodia elata Blume polysaccharide and related impacts on human gut microbiota in vitro

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Gastrodia elata Blume is a traditional Chinese medicine with the effects of improving the deficiency of the body and maintaining health, and polysaccharide (GEP) is one of the effective ingredients to play these activities of G. elata. Traditionally, G. elata is orally administered, so the activities of GEP are associated with digestive and intestinal metabolism. However, the digestive behavior of GEP and its effects on the human gut microbiota are unclear and need to be fully studied.

AIM OF THE STUDY

This study aimed to investigate the changes in structural characteristics of GEP during digestion and the related impacts of its digestive product on gut microbiota in human fecal fermentation, and to explain the beneficial mechanism of GEP on human health from the perspective of digestive characteristics and "gut" axis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The changes of reducing sugars, free monosaccharides and physicochemical properties of GEP during digestion were investigated by GPC, HPLC, FT-IR, CD, NMR, SEM, and TGA. Moreover, polysaccharide consumption, pH value changes, SCFAs production, and changes in gut microbiota during fermentation were also discussed.

RESULTS

During digestion of GEP, glucose was partially released causing a decrease in molecular weight, and a change in monosaccharide composition. In addition, the characteristics of GEP before and after digestion, including configuration, morphology, and stability, were different. The digestive product of GEP was polysaccharide (GEP-I), which actively participated in the fecal fermentation process. As the fermentation time increased, the utilization of GEP-I by the microbiota gradually increased. The abundance of probiotics such as Bifidobacterium, Collinsella, Prevotella, and Faecalibacterium was significantly increased, and the abundance of pathogenic Shigella, Dorea, Desulfovibrio, and Blautia was significantly inhibited, thereby suggesting that GEP has the potential to maintain human health through the "gut" axis. In addition, the beneficial health effects of GEP-I have also been observed in the influence of microbial metabolites. During the fermentation of GEP-I, the pH value gradually decreased, and the contents of beneficial metabolites such as acetic acid, propionic acid, and caproic acid significantly increased.

CONCLUSION

The structure of GEP changed significantly during digestion, and its digestive product had the potential to maintain human health by regulating gut microbiota, which may be one of the active mechanisms of GEP.

In Vitro Characterization of Polysaccharides from Fresh Tea Leaves in Simulated Gastrointestinal Digestion and Gut Microbiome Fermentation

Tea plants have a long cultivation history in the world, but there are few studies on polysaccharides from fresh tea leaves. In this study, tea polysaccharides (TPSs) were isolated from fresh tea leaves. Then, we investigated the characteristics of TPSs during in vitro simulated digestion and fermentation; moreover, the effects of TPSs on gut microbiota were explored. The results revealed that saliva did not significantly affect TPSs' molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, and reducing sugar content, indicating that TPSs cannot be digested in the oral cavity. However, TPSs were partially decomposed in the gastrointestinal tract after gastric and intestinal digestion, resulting in the release of a small amount of free glucose monosaccharides. Our in vitro fermentation experiments demonstrated that TPSs are degraded by gut microbiota, leading to short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production and pH reduction. Moreover, TPSs increased the abundance of Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium but reduced that of Escherichia, Shigella, and Enterococcus, demonstrating that TPSs can regulate the gut microbiome. In conclusion, TPSs are partially decomposed by gut microbiota, resulting in the production of SCFAs and the regulation of gut microbiota composition and function. Therefore, TPSs may be used to develop a prebiotic supplement to regulate the gut microbiome and improve host health.

Postbiotic properties of exopolysaccharide produced by Levilactobacillus brevis M-10 isolated from natural fermented sour porridge through in vitro simulated digestion and fermentation

The simulated digestion and fermentation characteristics in vitro of exopolysaccharide (EPS) of Levilactobacillus brevis M-10 were studied to evaluate its postbiotic properties. The simulated digestion results showed that EPS could not be degraded in saliva but could be very slightly degraded in gastric juice and could be degraded in intestinal juice. The results of simulated fermentation demonstrated that EPS could lower the intestine pH and be utilized by gut microbes to produce short-chain fatty acids such as propionic acid and butyric acid. Meanwhile, EPS significantly raised the diversity of human gut microbiota, and the relative abundances of Phascolarctobacterium were significantly increased, whereas Fusobacterium and Morganella significantly decreased. In conclusion, EPS from L. brevis M-10 was a good postbiotic as inulin. This was the first report about EPS as the postbiotic of L. brevis M-10 screened from broomcorn millet sour porridge in northwestern Shanxi Province, China.

In vitro digestion properties of Laiyang pear residue polysaccharides and it counteracts DSS-induced gut injury in mice via modulating gut inflammation, gut microbiota and intestinal barrier

The aim of this study was to explore the dynamic changes in the physicochemical properties of Laiyang pear residue polysaccharide (LPP) during in vitro digestion, as well as its protective effect on the intestines. Monosaccharide composition and molecular weight analysis showed that there was no significant change in LPP during the oral digestion stage. However, during the gastric and intestinal digestion stages, the glycosidic bonds of LPP were broken, leading to the dissociation of large molecular aggregates and a significant increase in reducing sugar content (CR) accompanied by a decrease in molecular weight. In addition, LPP exerted the intestinal protective ability via inhibiting gut inflammation, improving intestinal barrier, and regulating intestinal flora in DSS-induced mice. Specifically, LPP mitigated DSS-induced intestinal pathological damage of mice via enhancing intestinal barrier integrity and upregulating expressions of TJ proteins, and suppressed inflammation by inhibiting NF-κB signaling axis. Furthermore, LPP decreased the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes, increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, and altered the diversity and the composition of gut microbiota in DSS-induced mice. Therefore, LPP had the potential to be a functional food that improved gut microbiota environment to enhance health and prevent diseases, such as a prebiotic.

Effects of acetyl groups on the prebiotic properties of glucomannan extracted from Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch seeds

This study explores the structural modification of glucomannan extracted from Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch seeds (60S) to assess the impact of acetyl groups on its prebiotic characteristics. The structural changes were examined, with a focus on the degree of acetyl group substitution (DS). Both deacetylation and acetylation had limited influence on the molecular properties of 60S. Despite these modifications, the apparent viscosity of all samples remained consistently low. In vitro fermentation experiments revealed that Escherichia-Shigella decreased as DS increased, while Bacteroides ovatus was enriched. Acetylation had no significant impact on the utilization rate of 60S but led to a reduction in the production of propionic acid. Furthermore, untargeted metabolomics analysis confirmed the changes in propionic acid levels. Notably, metabolites such as N-acetyl-L-tyrosine, γ-muricholic acid, and taurocholate were upregulated by acetylated derivatives. Overall, acetyl groups are speculated to play a pivotal role in the prebiotic properties of 60S.

In vitro digestive properties of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharide by steam explosion pretreatment methods

Dictyophora indusiata is medicinal and edible fungi containing various nutrients. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficient extraction and structural evolution of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharide during the vitro digestion based on steam explosion pretreatment methods. In this study, the extraction rate of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharide was optimized by steam explosion pretreatment methods, which was 2.46 folds that of the water extraction method. In addition, the digestion and fermentation properties of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharide before and after steam explosion were evaluated in vitro by the changes of molecular weights, total and reducing sugars levels, surface morphology and functional groups, which showed that the structure of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharide remained stable after salivary-gastric digestion, and partially entered the large intestine, where it could be utilized by gut microbiota. Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharide promoted the increase of beneficial bacteria Megamonas and increased the content of acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid, which was 2.17, 2.81, 2.43 folds that of the CON group after fermentation for 24 h, and 1.87, 2.77, 1.90 folds that of the CON group after fermentation for 48 h, respectively. This study will provide theoretical basis for the high value utilization of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharide.

The structural characterization of a novel Chinese yam polysaccharide and its hypolipidemic activity in HFD-induced obese C57BL/6J mice

Obesity was considered as a rapidly growing chronic disease that influences human health worldwide. In this study, we investigated the primary structure characteristics of Chinese yam polysaccharide (CYP) and its role in regulating lipid metabolism in a high-fat diet (HFD)-fed obese mice. The molecular weight of CYP was determined to be 3.16 × 103 kDa. Periodic acid oxidation & smith degradation and nuclear magnetic resonance results suggested that CYP consists of 1 → 2, 1 → 2, 6, 1 → 4, 1 → 4, 6, 1→, or 1 → 6 glycoside bonds. The in vivo experiment results suggested that the biochemical indices, tissue sections, and protein regulation associated with lipid metabolism were changed after administering CYP in obese mice. In addition, the abundances of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria Lachnospiraceae, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 were increased, and the abundances of bacteria Desulfovibrionaceae and Ruminococcus and metabolites of arginine, propionylcarnitine, and alloisoleucine were decreased after CYP intervention in obese mice. Spearman's correlation analysis of intestinal flora, metabolites, and lipid metabolism parameters showed that CYP may affect lipid metabolism in obese mice by regulating the intestinal environment. Therefore, CYP may be used as a promising nutritional intervention agent for lipid metabolism.

Flash extraction of ulvan polysaccharides from marine green macroalga Ulva linza and evaluation of its antioxidant and gut microbiota modulation activities

In this study, flash extraction was used to rapidly extract water-soluble polysaccharides from Ulva linza. The optimal extraction process for the flash extraction was determined by Box-Behnken design with extraction temperature 80 °C, extraction time 117 s, liquid-solid ratio 46:1 (mL/g) and a corresponding yield of 18.5 %. The crude Ulva linza polysaccharides (CULP) were subsequently isolated by chromatography technology to obtain purified Ulva linza polysaccharide (ULP) and characterized by monosaccharide composition and molecular weight determination analysis. Furthermore, the antioxidant bioactivity of ULP was studied and the results revealed that it had a good scavenging effect on DPPH, ABTS and OH, with IC50 values of 149.2 μg/mL, 252.5 μg/mL and 1073 μg/mL, respectively. After in vitro fermentation by human fecal microbiota, the pH value of fermentation culture significantly decreased to 5.06, suggesting that ULP could be hydrolyzed and utilized by gut microbiota. The abundance of beneficial bacteria including Bacteroides, Parabacteroides and Faecalibacterium was improved. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of Prevotella, Blautia and Ruminococcus was decreased, and the low ratio of these organisms might reveal positive effects on maintaining the balance of gut microbial biodiversity. These results suggested that the composition of the human gut microbiota could be modulated by ULP, and ULP might possess the potential to maintain gut homeostasis and improve human intestinal health.

In vitro gastrointestinal digestion methods of carbohydrate-rich foods

The trend toward healthier food products has led to an increase in the research of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion methods. Among the most used models, static models are the simplest. Most static models have three stages: oral, gastric, and intestinal, simulating the enzymatic, electrolyte, pH, temperature, and bile salt conditions. The studies that have taken the most notice are those related to antioxidant activity, followed by those dealing with proteins and carbohydrates using most of them static in vitro digestion models. The number of these studies has increased over the years, passing from 45 to 415 in a 10-year period (2012-2023) and showing an interest in knowing the impact of food on human health. Nevertheless, published papers report different methodologies and analytical approaches. This review discusses the similarities and differences between the published static in vitro gastrointestinal digestion methods, with a focus on carbohydrates, finding that the most used protocol is Infogest, but with differences, mainly in the type of enzymes and their activity. Regarding in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of carbohydrates, many of the published studies are related to food and biomacromolecules, being the oral phase the most omitted, while the intestinal phase in the most diverse. Other methodologies to study the intestinal phase have been recommended, but the number of in vitro digestion studies using these methodologies (RSIE and BBMV) is still scarce but could represent a good alternative to analyze carbohydrates foods when combining with Infogest. More studies are required in this area.

The Influence of Polysaccharides on Lipid Metabolism: Insights from Gut Microbiota

SCOPE

Polysaccharides are complex molecules of more than ten monosaccharide residues interconnected through glycosidic linkages formed via condensation reactions. Polysaccharides are widely distributed in various food resources and have gained considerable attention due to their diverse biological activities. This review presented a critical analysis of the existing research literature on anti-obesity polysaccharides and investigates the complex interplay between their lipid-lowering activity and the gut microbiota, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the lipid-lowering properties of polysaccharides and the underlying mechanisms of action.

METHODS AND RESULTS

In this review, the study summarized the roles of polysaccharides in improving lipid metabolism via gut microbiota, including the remodeling of the intestinal barrier, reduction of inflammation, inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, reduction of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) production, and regulation of the metabolism of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and bile acids (BAs).

CONCLUSION

These mechanisms collectively contributed to the beneficial effects of polysaccharides on lipid metabolism and overall metabolic health. Furthermore, polysaccharide-based nanocarriers combined with gut microbiota have broad prospects for developing targeted and personalized therapies for hyperlipidemia and obesity.

Physicochemical characterization, digestion profile and gut microbiota regulation activity of intracellular polysaccharides from Chlorella zofingiensis

A number of studies have shown that the polysaccharides from microalgae exhibit diverse biological activities, however, little is known about their digestibility and impact on human gut microbiota. In this study, a simulating digestion and fermentation system were established to investigate the digestibility and fermentation of intracellular polysaccharides from Chlorella zofingiensis (CZIP-S3). The results indicated that CZIP-S3 is a macromolecular polysaccharide composed of mannose, glucose, galactose and rhamnose, consisting of a main chain and two branched repeating units. CZIP-S3 could not be digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract. However, CZIP-S3 could be metabolized into smaller molecules by the gut microbiota. The pH values continuously decrease during fermentation, whereas, the amount of short-chain fatty acids steadily increase. Furthermore, CZIP-S3 could modulate the composition of gut microbiota, via lowering the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes and increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroides, Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia. The data suggested that CZIP-S3 could potentially be used as an ingredient for functional foods or prebiotics to improve human health by promoting the relative abundances of beneficial bacteria.

Prebiotic Cellulose-Pullulan Matrix as a "Vehicle" for Probiotic Biofilm Delivery to the Host Large Intestine

This study describes the development of a new combined polysaccharide-matrix-based technology for the immobilization of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) bacteria in biofilm form. The new composition allows for delivering the bacteria to the digestive tract in a manner that improves their robustness compared with planktonic cells and released biofilm cells. Granules consisting of a polysaccharide matrix with probiotic biofilms (PMPB) with high cell density (>9 log CFU/g) were obtained by immobilization in the optimized nutrient medium. Successful probiotic loading was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The developed prebiotic polysaccharide matrix significantly enhanced LGG viability under acidic (pH 2.0) and bile salt (0.3%) stress conditions. Enzymatic extract of feces, mimicking colon fluid in terms of cellulase activity, was used to evaluate the intestinal release of probiotics. PMPB granules showed the ability to gradually release a large number of viable LGG cells in the model colon fluid. In vivo, the oral administration of PMPB granules in rats resulted in the successful release of probiotics in the colon environment. The biofilm-forming incubation method of immobilization on a complex polysaccharide matrix tested in this study has shown high efficacy and promising potential for the development of innovative biotechnologies.

Sulfated Galactans from Agarophytes: Review of Extraction Methods, Structural Features, and Biological Activities

Agarophytes are important seaweeds of the Rhodophyta type, which have been highly exploited for industrial use as sources of a widely consumed polysaccharide of agar. In addition to that, sulfated galactans (SGs) from agarophytes, which consist of various functional sulfate groups, have attracted the attention of scientists in current studies. SGs possess various biological activities, such as anti-tumor, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, anti-diarrhea, and gut microbiota regulation properties. Meanwhile, the taxonomy, ecological factors, i.e., environmental factors, and harvest period, as well as preparation methods, i.e., the pretreatment, extraction, and purification conditions, have been found to influence the chemical compositions and fine structures of SGs, which have, further, been shown to have an impact on their biological activities. However, the gaps in the knowledge of the properties of SGs due to the above complex factors have hindered their industrial application. The aim of this paper is to collect and systematically review the scientific evidence about SGs and, thus, to pave the way for broader and otherwise valuable industrial applications of agarophytes for human enterprise. In the future, this harvested biomass could be sustainably used not only as a source of agar production but also as natural materials in functional food and pharmaceutical industries.

Unrevealing the in vitro impacts of Cereus jacamaru DC. cladodes flour on potentially probiotic strains, selected bacterial populations, and metabolic activity of human intestinal microbiota

This study investigated the potential impacts of the flour from Cereus jamacaru cactus cladodes (CJF), a cactus native to the Brazilian Caatinga biome, on the growth and metabolism of different potentially probiotic strains, as well as on the abundance of selected intestinal bacterial populations and microbial metabolic activity during in vitro colonic fermentation with a pooled human fecal inoculum. Cultivation of the probiotics in a medium with C. jamacaru cladodes flour (20 g/L) resulted in viable cell counts of up to 9.8 log CFU/mL, positive prebiotic activity scores (0.73-0.91), decreased pH and sugar contents, and increased lactic, acetic, and propionic acid production over time, indicating enhanced probiotic growth and metabolic activity. CJF overall increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus spp./Enterococcus spp. (2.12-3.29%) and Bifidobacterium spp. (4.08-4.32%) and decreased the relative abundance of Bacteroides spp./Prevotella spp. (8.35-6.81%), Clostridium histolyticum (6.91-3.59%), and Eubacterium rectale/Clostridium coccoides (7.70-3.95%) during 48 h of an in vitro colonic fermentation using a pooled human fecal inoculum. CJF stimulated the microbial metabolic activity, with decreased pH, sugar consumption, lactic and short-chain fatty acid production, alterations in overall metabolic profiling and phenolic compound contents, and maintenance of high antioxidant capacity during colonic fermentation. These results show that CJF stimulated the growth and metabolic activity of distinct potential probiotics, increased the relative abundance of beneficial intestinal bacterial groups, and stimulated microbial metabolism during in vitro colonic fermentation. Further studies using advanced molecular technologies and in vivo experimental models could forward the investigation of the potential prebiotic properties of CJF.

The Progressive Utilization of Ponkan Peel Residue for Regulating Human Gut Microbiota through Sequential Extraction and Modification of Its Dietary Fibers

As a by-product of citrus processing, ponkan (Citrus reticulata Blanco, cv. Ponkan) peel residue is a source of high quality dietary fiber (DF). To make a full utilization of this resource and give a better understanding on the probiotic function of its DF, soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) were extracted from ponkan peel residue (after flavonoids were extracted) using an alkaline method, followed by modifications using a composite physical-enzymatic treatment. The in vitro fermentation properties of the modified SDF and IDF (namely, MSDF and MIDF) and their effects on short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) production and changes in the composition of human gut microbiota were investigated. Results showed that MSDF and MIDF both significantly lowered the pH value and enhanced total SCFA content in the broths after fermented for 24 h by fecal inocula (p < 0.05) with better effects found in MSDF. Both MSDF and MIDF significantly reduced the diversity, with more in the latter than the former, and influenced the composition of human gut microbiota, especially increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and decreasing the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes (F/B) value. The more influential microbiota by MSDF were g-Collinsella, p-Actinobacteria and g-Dialister, while those by MIDF were f-Veillonellaceae, c-Negativicutes and f-Prevotellacese. These results suggested that the modified ponkan peel residue DF can be utilized by specific bacteria in the human gut as a good source of fermentable fiber, providing a basis for the exploitation of the citrus by-product.

Effect of natural polysaccharides on alcoholic liver disease: A review

In this study, we systematically collected relevant literature in the past five years on the intervention of natural polysaccharides in alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and reviewed the pharmacological activities and potential mechanisms of action. Natural polysaccharides are effective in preventing liver tissue degeneration, inhibiting the alcohol-induced expression of inflammatory factors, inactivation of antioxidant enzymes, and abnormal hepatic lipid deposition. Natural polysaccharides regulate the expression of proteins, such as tight junction proteins, production of small molecule metabolites, and balance of intestinal flora in the intestinal tract to alleviate ALD. Natural polysaccharides also exert therapeutic effects by modulating inflammatory, oxidative, lipid metabolism, and other pathways in the liver. Natural polysaccharides also inhibit alcohol-induced intestinal abnormalities by regulating intestinal flora and feeding back into the liver via the gut-liver axis. However, existing research on natural polysaccharides has many shortcomings: for example, most of the natural polysaccharides for testing are total polysaccharides or crude polysaccharides, progress in research on in vivo metabolic processes and mechanisms is slow, and the degree of industrialisation is insufficient. Finally, we discuss the difficulties in studying natural polysaccharides and future directions to provide a theoretical basis for their development and application.

Glycolysis characteristics of intracellular polysaccharides from Agaricus bitorquis (Quél.) sacc. Chaidam and its effects on intestinal flora from different altitudes of mice in vitro fermentation

The glycolysis characteristics and effects on intestinal flora of polysaccharides from Agaricus bitorquis (Quél.) Sacc. Chaidam (ABIPs) in vitro fermentation by different altitudes of mice feces was examined, including low, medium, and high altitudes groups (LG, MG, and HG). In vitro, fermentation of ABIPs forty-eight hours resulted in a remarkable decrease in total sugar content and improvement of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) (mainly acetate, propionate, and butyrate), which simultaneously induced the composition of monose and uronic acids and SCFAs continuously change. Besides, ABIPs influenced the abundance and composition of the intestinal flora, generally increasing the abundance of probiotic bacteria (such as Bifidobacterium and Faecalibacterium) and decreasing the abundance of harmful bacteria (such as Phenylobacterium and Streptococcus) in all groups, with the highland biology core genus Blautia significantly enriched in LG and MG groups. It was also found that ABIPs enhanced pathways associated with biosynthesis and metabolism. In addition, correlation analysis speculated that the metabolism of SCFAs by ABIPs may be associated with genera such as Anaerostipes, Roseburia, and Weissella. ABIPs may protect organismal health by regulating hypoxic intestinal flora composition and metabolic function, and more superior fermentation performance was observed in MG compared to other groups.

Cypermethrin adsorption by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and its behavior in a simulated fecal fermentation model

The presence of cypermethrin in the environment and food poses a significant threat to human health. Lactic acid bacteria have shown promise as effective absorbents for xenobiotics and well behaved in wide range of applications. This study aimed to characterize the biosorption behavior of cypermethrin by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RS60, focusing on cellular components, functional groups, kinetics, and isotherms. Results indicated that RS60 exopolysaccharides played a crucial role removing cypermethrin, with the cell wall and protoplast contributing 71.50% and 30.29% to the overall removal, respectively. Notably, peptidoglycans exhibited a high affinity for cypermethrin binding. The presence of various cellular surface groups including -OH, -NH, -CH3, -CH2, -CH, -P = O, and -CO was responsible for the efficient removal of pollutants. Additionally, the biosorption process demonstrated a good fit with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm. The biosorption of cypermethrin by L. plantarum RS60 involved complex chemical and physical interactions, as well as intraparticle diffusion and film diffusion. RS60 also effectively reduced cypermethrin residues in a fecal fermentation model, highlighting its potential in mitigating cypermethrin exposure in humans and animals. These findings provided valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying cypermethrin biosorption by lactic acid bacteria and supported the advancement of their application in environmental and health-related contexts. Potential of jackfruit inner skin fibre for encapsulation of probiotics on their stability against adverse conditions

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of jackfruit inner skin fibre (JS) incorporated with whey protein isolate (WPI) and soybean oil (SO) as a wall material for probiotic encapsulation to improve probiotic stability against freeze-drying and gastrointestinal (GI) tract conditions. Bifidobacterium bifidum TISTR2129, Bifidobacterium breve TISTR2130, and Lactobacillus acidophilus TISTR1338 were studied in terms of SCFA production and the antibiotic-resistant profile and in an antagonistic assay to select suitable strains for preparing a probiotic cocktail, which was then encapsulated. The results revealed that B. breve and L. acidophilus can be used effectively as core materials. JS showed the most influential effect on protecting probiotics from freeze-drying. WPI:SO:JS at a ratio of 3.9:2.4:3.7 was the optimized wall material, which provided an ideal formulation with 83.1 ± 6.1% encapsulation efficiency. This formulation presented > 50% probiotic survival after exposure to gastro-intestinal tract conditions. Up to 77.8 ± 0.1% of the encapsulated probiotics survived after 8 weeks of storage at refrigeration temperature. This study highlights a process and formulation to encapsulate probiotics for use as food supplements that could provide benefits to human health as well as an alternative approach to reduce agricultural waste by increasing the value of jackfruit inner skin.

Catabolism of Dictyophora indusiata Polysaccharide and Its Impacts on Gut Microbial Composition during In Vitro Digestion and Microbial Fermentation

Dictyophora indusiata is one of the most famous edible mushrooms in China. D. indusiata polysaccharide (DP) has attracted increasing attention because of its multiple beneficial effects. In this study, the in vitro simulated digestion and microbial fermentation were designed to reveal the potential catabolic property of DP and its impacts on the modulation of gut microbial composition. The results showed that the reducing sugar content, total polysaccharides content, molecular weight, and rheological property of DP were not significantly altered under in vitro simulated digestive conditions. However, the molecular weight, apparent viscosity, and total polysaccharides content of indigestible DP (DPI) significantly decreased during in vitro fecal fermentation, and the reducing sugar content and the release of free monosaccharides notably increased, suggesting that DP could be degraded and used by gut microbiota. Additionally, the relative abundances of several beneficial bacteria, such as Bacteroides, Catenibacterium, Parabacteroides, and Megamonas, increased significantly, indicating that DP can regulate the composition and abundance of gut microbiota. Moreover, DP could also promote the production of SCFAs, thus changing the acid-base environment of the large intestine. The results of this study are beneficial for deeply clarifying the catabolic behavior of DP in the gastrointestinal tract, which can provide a theoretical basis for developing microbiota-directed products based on DP.

Longan pulp polysaccharides regulate gut microbiota and metabolites to protect intestinal epithelial barrier

Longan pulp polysaccharide is a bioactive component with prebiotic activity and intestinal barrier protection. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of digestion and fermentation on the bioavailability and intestinal barrier protection of polysaccharide LPIIa from longan pulp. The molecular weight of LPIIa didn't change significantly after gastrointestinal digestion in vitro. After fecal fermentation, 56.02% of LPIIa was consumed by gut microbiota. The short-chain fatty acid level in LPIIa group was 51.63% higher than that in blank group. LPIIa intake also increased short-chain fatty acid production and G-protein-coupled receptor 41 expression in the colon of mice. Moreover, LPIIa improved the relative richness of Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, and Bifidobacterium in colon content. Compared to LPIIa, fecal fermented LPIIa better protected intestinal epithelial barrier by increasing Zonula occludens-1 expression. These results provided an important basis for the design of functional food based on longan polysaccharides to prevent intestinal barrier damage related diseases.

Effects of Simulated In Vitro Digestion on the Structural Characteristics, Inhibitory Activity on α-Glucosidase, and Fermentation Behaviours of a Polysaccharide from Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the simulated saliva-gastrointestinal digestion of AABP-2B on its structural features, inhibitory α-glucosidase activity, and human gut microbiota. The salivary-gastrointestinal digestion results show that there is no significant change in the molecular weight of AABP-2B, and no free monosaccharides are released. This indicates that, under a simulated digestive condition, AABP-2B is not degraded and can be further utilized by gut microbiota. AABP-2B still possessed good inhibitory activity on α-glucosidase after salivary-gastrointestinal digestion, which may be attributed to the largely unchanged structural characteristics of AABP-2B after simulated digestion. Furthermore, in vitro fecal fermentation with AABP-2B after salivary-gastrointestinal digestion showed that AABP-2B modulated the gut microbiota structure and increased the relative proportions of Prevotella, Faecalibacterium, and Megasphaera. AABP-2B can also modify the intestinal flora composition by inhibiting pathogen growth. Moreover, the AABP-2B group resulted in a significant increase in short-chain fatty acid (SCFAs) content during fermentation. These findings demonstrate that AABP-2B can be used as a prebiotic or functional food to promote gut health.

Effects of dietary dandelion (Taraxacum mongolicum Hand.-Mazz.) polysaccharides on the performance and gut microbiota of laying hens

This experiment was designed to evaluate the influences of dietary dandelion polysaccharides (DP) on the performance and cecum microbiota of laying hens. Three hundred laying hens were assigned to five treatment groups: the basal diet group (CK group), three DP groups (basal diets supplemented with 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 % DP), and the inulin group (IN group, basal diet supplemented with 1.5 % inulin). Increased daily egg weight and a decreased feed conversion rate were observed when the diets were supplemented with inulin or DP. The calcium metabolism rate in the 0.5 % and 1.0 % DP groups was greater than that in the CK group. The DP groups increased the short-chain fatty acid concentration, decreased pH, and enhanced the relative abundances of Parabacteroides, Alloprevotella, and Romboutsia in the cecum. These results showed that DP supplementation in the diets of laying hens can improve their performance, which might be associated with the regulation of the cecal microbiota.

Partial enzymolysis affects the digestion of tamarind seed polysaccharides in vitro: Degradation accelerates and gut microbiota regulates

Two hydrolyzed fractions of tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP), denoted ETSP1 (176.68 kDa) and ETSP2 (34.34 kDa), were prepared by partial degradation via endo-xyloglucanase, and then characterized and evaluated by simulated gastrointestinal digestion in vitro. The results showed that the hydrolyzed TSPs remained indigestible in gastric and small intestinal media, and were fermented by gut microbiota, similar to the native TSP (M_w = 481.52 kDa). Although the degradation of hydrolyzed TSPs was accelerated during fermentation with a decreasing degree of polymerization, the content of produced total short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) decreased. After fermentation, the gut microbiota composition was modified, esp. the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio decreased (1.06 vs. 0.96 vs. 0.80) with a decreasing degree of polymerization, which implied that the potential anti-obesity prebiotic effect was enhanced. At the genus level, hydrolyzed TSPs maintained similar roles as native TSP, including promoting beneficial bacteria (Bifidobacterium, Parabacteroides, and Faecalibacterium) and inhibiting enteropathogenic bacteria (Escherichia-Shigella and Dorea). Moreover, ETSP1 had additional potential due to abundant Bacteroides vulgatus (LDA = 4.68), and ETSP2 might perform better as related to Bacteroides xylanisolvens (LDA = 4.40). All these results indicated the prebiotic potential of hydrolyzed TSP with detailed information about changes in degradation and gut microbiota based on enzyme-hydrolysis.

Effects of simulated digestion on the structural characteristics and dendritic cell activation of longan polysaccharides

An active polysaccharide (LP) from longan was purified and characterized. LP consisted of galactose and glucose in a molar ratio of 1.5: 98.5, with a molecular weight of 4.67 × 10⁷ g/mol. The main backbone of LP was T-α-D-Glcp-[(1 → 6)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → 6)-α-D-Glcp]_n. After simulated gastrointestinal digestion, the molecular weight distribution, monosaccharide composition, and major glycosidic bonds of LP were not significantly changed. LP and digested LP (DLP) reduced phagocytosis and promoted IL-10 and IL-12 secretion of dendritic cells. In addition, the effects of LP and DLP on activating dendritic cells showed no significant difference. This study helps to illuminate the potential mode of immunomodulatory action of longan polysaccharides in vivo.

Research progress in the preparation, structural characterization, bioactivities, and potential applications of sulfated agarans from the genus Gracilaria

The genus Gracilaria produces 80% of the world's industrial agar. Agar of this genus is a promising biologically active polymer, which has been used in the human diet and folk medicine, alternative for weight loss, treatment of diarrhea, etc. With more attention paid to the genus Gracilaria-sulfated agarans (GSAs), they exhibited multitudinous health benefits in antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, prebiotics, anti-tumor, anticoagulant, and antidiabetic. Various preparation procedures of GSAs making the diversities of structure and biological activity. Therefore, this review summarized the isolation, identification, bioactivity potentials, and applications of GSAs, providing a reference to the development of GSAs in functional food and pharmaceutical industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The genus Gracilaria is known as a raw material for agar extraction. GSAs are food-grade agaran with the properties of thermoreversible gels at low concentrations, which are commonly used as an additive for making candies as well as raw material for making soup and snacks. They are used in folk medicine to treat diarrhea and other diseases. As an important bioactive macromolecule, GSAs have various biological activities (such as antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, probiotic, anti-tumor, anticoagulant, and antidiabetic activities), and have the potential to be developed as functional food and medicine. They could also be used to create innovative agar-based products such as antibacterial films and drug carriers.

Bioactive composition and modulatory effects of Hed-Tean-Rad Mushroom, Macrocybe crassa on gut microbiota

Macrocybe crassa (or Tricholoma crassum) is a nutrient-dense wild edible mushroom native to Thailand. The mushroom extract and its constituents have remarkable biological characteristics, but the influence of the powder on the human gut microbiota is unknown. This study investigated the bioactive composition and modulatory properties of M. crassa powder on gut microbial composition and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) production. The fermentation of M. crassa powder by human intestinal microbiota released SCFA, mainly acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid. M. crassa powder significantly modulated the microbiota by increasing the relative abundances of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus/Enterococcus group, Atopobium, Bacteroidaceae/Prevotellaceae, and C. coccoides. F. prausnitzii, Roseburia genus, C. histolyticum and C. cluster IX, similar to that of Fructooligosaccharides (FOS). With M. crassa powder, high content of propionic acid was observed, as well as a number of Bacteroidaceae/Prevotellaceae and C. cluster IX. On the other hand, FOS caused a high acetic acid concentration and a population of Bifidobacterium spp., Atopobium cluster, Bacteroidaceae/Prevotellaceae, and C. coccoides. Therefore, this work will significantly contribute to filling the knowledge gap and revealing the significance of M. crassa in the pharmaceutical industry.

In vitro fermentation of Bangia fusco-purpurea polysaccharide by human gut microbiota and the protective effects of the resultant products on Caco-2 cells from lipopolysaccharide-induced injury

Polysaccharide extracted from red seaweed Bangia fusco-purpurea (BFP) is a novel sulfated galactan, differed from agarans and carrageenans in fine structure. In this study, in vitro fermentation characteristics of BFP by human gut microbiota and its protective effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced injury in Caco-2 cells were investigated. Our results showed that BFP was mainly degraded at transverse colon for 18 h fermentation by gut microbiota with reduced molecular weight. Meanwhile, BFP fermentation was associated with increased short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) as compared to control group, especially acetic acid was increased to 129.53 ± 0.24 from 82.14 ± 0.23 mmol/L, and butyric acid was up to 1.56 ± 0.004 from 0.62 ± 0.01 mmol/L. Furthermore, BFP promoted abundances of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes, while decreased numbers of Proteobacteria. The up-regrated beneficial differential metabolites were SCFAs, L-proline, arginine, folic acid, pyridoxamine, thiamine, etc. (p < 0.05), and their related metabolic pathways mainly included mTOR, arginine biosynthesis, and vitamin metabolism. Notably, BFP fermentation products at transverse colon significantly restored cell viability of LPS-treated Caco-2 cells from 73.79 ± 0.48 % to 93.79-99.64 %, which might be caused by increased beneficial differential metabolites (e.g., SCFAs). Our findings suggest that BFP has prebiotic potential and can enhance gut health.

Two Polysaccharides from Liupao Tea Exert Beneficial Effects in Simulated Digestion and Fermentation Model In Vitro

Liupao tea is an important dark tea, but few studies on purified Liupao tea polysaccharide (TPS) are reported in the literature. In this study, two TPSs, named TPS2 and TPS5, with molecular weights of 70.5 and 133.9 kDa, respectively, were purified from Liupao tea. TPS2 contained total sugar content (53.73% ± 1.55%) and uronic acid content (35.18% ± 0.96%), while TPS5 was made up of total sugar (51.71% ± 1.1%), uronic acid (40.95% ± 3.12%), polyphenols (0.43% ± 0.03%), and proteins (0.11% ± 0.07%). TPS2 and TPS5 were composed of Man, Rha, GlcA, Glc, Gal, and Ara in the molar ratios of 0.12:0.69:0.20:0.088:1.60:0.37 and 0.090:0.36:0.42:0.07:1.10:0.16, respectively. The effects of TPS2 and TPS5 on digestion and regulation of gut microbiota in hyperlipidemic rats were compared. In simulated digestion, TPS5 was degraded and had good antioxidant effect, whereas TPS2 was not affected. The bile acids binding capacities of TPS2 and TPS5 were 42.79% ± 1.56% and 33.78% ± 0.45%, respectively. During in vitro fermentation, TPS2 could more effectively reduce pH, promote the production of acetic acid and propionic acid, and reduce the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes. TPS5 could more effectively promote the production of butyric acid and increase the abundance of genus Bacteroides. Results indicate that polysaccharides without polyphenols and proteins have better antidigestibility and bile acid binding. Meanwhile, polysaccharides with polyphenols and proteins have a better antioxidant property. Both have different effects on the gut microbiota.

Study on the Effect of Molecular Weight on the Gut Microbiota Fermentation Properties of Blackberry Polysaccharides In Vitro

This study aimed to investigate the effect of different molecular weights on the metabolic characteristics of blackberry polysaccharides (BBP). After degradation, three fractions, namely, BBP-8, BBP-16, and BBP-24, were obtained. During fermentation, all polysaccharide fractions were significantly degraded and utilized by the intestinal microbiota, and the lower-molecular-weight polysaccharides were easier to be fermented with higher gas production and carbohydrate consumption rates. Furthermore, the monosaccharide utilization sequence of all polysaccharides was glucose > galactose > arabinose > galacturonic acid. In addition, the lower-molecular-weight polysaccharides had a faster short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production rate but did not affect the final SCFA yields. The fermentation of BBP promoted the increase of Bacteroidetes and the decrease of Firmicutes. The proportions of Bacteroidetes in BBP, BBP-8, BBP-16, and BBP-24 were 45.41, 47.50, 48.08, and 50.09%, respectively.

Positive effects of dietary fiber from sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] peels by different extraction methods on human fecal microbiota in vitro fermentation

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of sweet potato peels dietary fiber obtained by different extraction methods on intestinal health. Specifically, four different dietary fibers were extracted by hot water, microwave, ultrasonic and subcritical water methods. And the prebiotics effects of sweet potato peels dietary fibers were explored in an in vitro fermentation model, by determining intestinal gas content, short-chain fatty acid content, pH, ammonia content and the gut microbiota composition. The results showed that dietary fiber obtained by four different extraction methods could be utilized by GM and improve human health by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria (e.g., Bifidobacterium, Faecalibacterium, and Prevotella) and reducing the abundance of harmful bacteria (e.g., Proteobacteria, Romboutsia and Dorea), enhancing the relative abundance of SCFA-producing bacteria, promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids, reducing intestinal pH from 6.89 to 4.63 and ammonia. Among them, dietary fiber extracted by ultrasound is better than the other three extraction methods. This study suggests that all the four different extraction methods are available for sweet potato peels dietary fiber, and the extracted dietary fiber could be served as potential functional foods with great development value. In addition, it is beneficial to reduce the environmental pollution of sweet potato peels and improve the high-value processing and utilization of sweet potato by-products.

Three main metabolites from Wolfiporia cocos (F. A. Wolf) Ryvarden & Gilb regulate the gut microbiota in mice: A comparative study using microbiome-metabolomics

Wolfiporia cocos (F. A. Wolf) Ryvarden & Gilb, also known as Poria cocos is an ancient edible and medicinal mushroom that has been valued for thousands of years for its tranquilizing, diuretic, and spleen-enhancing properties. Because of the mushroom’s complex composition, its pharmacological effects have not been fully clarified. Therefore, to expand our knowledge of these effects from a pharmacological perspective and exploit potential medicinal value of fungal mushroom, we extracted three main metabolites from P. cocos, including water-soluble polysaccharides (PCX), water-insoluble polysaccharides (PCY), and triterpenoid saponins (PCZ) for intragastric injection into mice. These injections were made to explore the component’s effects on the mice’s gut microbiota and their metabolomics. The microbiota analysis showed that PCY had the strongest effect on regulating gut microbiota through altering its composition and increasing the number of Lactobacillus (p < 0.01). A total of 1,828 metabolites were detected using metabolomics methods, and the results showed that the three main active metabolites of P. cocos significantly changed the content of short-chain peptides in intestinal metabolites. In conclusion, our study further investigated the pharmacological functions of P. cocos, and revealed the differing effects of its three main metabolites on gut microbiota. The results suggested that PCY is a prominent prebiotic, and provided us with new insights into the potential development of fungal polysaccharides in Chinese traditional medicine.

Digestion characteristics of polysaccharides from Gracilaria lemaneiformis and its interaction with the human gut microbiota

The health effects of polysaccharides have attracted lots of attention, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. This study indicated that polysaccharides from Gracilaria lemaneiformis (GLPs) tolerated the conditions of mouth, stomach, and small intestine, and it reached the colon integrally, where it increased the production of short chain fatty acids, altered the gut microbiota, and especially increased the level of Bacteroides. To explore the underlying mechanism, hundreds of Bacteroides strains were isolated from the human feces and identified by MALDI-TOF/MS. It showed that Bacteroides species profile was different between individuals, revealing an inherent difference in the human gut microbiota. The use of Bacteroides on GLPs was species-dependent, and various small molecular GLPs fragments can be liberated from growth of Bacteroides species. On the other hand, Bacteroides species that unable to grow with GLPs can live in GLPs-derived fragments, forming a GLPs utilization network. It should be noted that small molecular GLPs fragments can be easier to be metabolized by intestinal microbes and have better effect on cellular response. It suggested that the effect of polysaccharides cannot only be attributed to modulation of the gut microbiota, but also associated with the effect of microbial degradation on GLPs own activities.

Extraction, purification, structural characterization, and gut microbiota relationship of polysaccharides: A review

Intestinal dysbiosis is one of the major causes of the occurrence of metabolic syndromes, such as obesity, diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular diseases. Polysaccharide-based microbial therapeutic strategies have excellent potential in the treatment of metabolic syndromes, but the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Identification of the internal regulatory mechanism of the gut microbiome and the interaction mechanisms involving bacteria and the host are essential to achieve precise control of the gut microbiome and obtain valuable clinical data. Polysaccharides cannot be directly digested; the behavior in the intestinal tract is considered a "bridge" between microbiota and host communication. To provide a relatively comprehensive reference for researchers in the field, we will discuss the polysaccharide extraction and purification processes and chemical and structural characteristics, focusing on the polysaccharides in gut microbiota through the immune system, gut-liver axis, gut-brain axis, energy axis interactions, and potential applications.

Dietary compounds in modulation of gut microbiota-derived metabolites

Gut microbiota, a group of microorganisms that live in the gastrointestinal tract, plays important roles in health and disease. One mechanism that gut microbiota in modulation of the functions of hosts is achieved through synthesizing and releasing a series of metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids. In recent years, increasing evidence has indicated that dietary compounds can interact with gut microbiota. On one hand, dietary compounds can modulate the composition and function of gut microbiota; on the other hand, gut microbiota can metabolize the dietary compounds. Although there are several reviews on gut microbiota and diets, there is no focused review on the effects of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived metabolites. In this review, we first briefly discussed the types of gut microbiota metabolites, their origins, and the reasons that dietary compounds can interact with gut microbiota. Then, focusing on gut microbiota-derived compounds, we discussed the effects of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived compounds and the following effects on health. Furthermore, we give our perspectives on the research direction of the related research fields. Understanding the roles of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived metabolites will expand our knowledge of how diets affect the host health and disease, thus eventually enable the personalized diets and nutrients.

Comfrey polysaccharides modulate the gut microbiota and its metabolites SCFAs and affect the production performance of laying hens

Effects of dietary supplementation of comfrey polysaccharides (CPs) on production performance, egg quality, and microbial composition of cecum in laying hens were evaluated. A total of 240 laying hens were allocated into 4 groups with 6 replicates per group. The laying hens were fed diets containing CPs at levels of 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 %, respectively. The results showed that the egg production rate increased by 5.97 %, the egg mass improved by 6.71 %, and the feed conversion rate reduced by 5.43 % in the 1.0 % supplementation group of CPs compared with those in the control group. The digestibility of ash, crude fat, and phosphorus was notably improved by the addition of CPs at 1.0 % (P < 0.05). The relative abundances of Bacteroidetes at the phylum level, Bacteroidaceae, Rikenellaceae, and Prevotellaceae at the family level were increased by CPs (P < 0.05). The relative abundances of Bacteroides, Megamonas, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, [Ruminococcus]_torques_group, Methanobrevibacter, Desulfovibrio, Romboutsia, Alistipes, and Intestinimonas at the genus level were increased by CPs (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation of CPs could enhance the production performance of laying hens, which might be related to the improvement of nutrient digestibility and microbial community modulations in the cecum. Therefore, CPs have potential application value as prebiotics in laying hens.

An insight to the therapeutic potential of algae-derived sulfated polysaccharides and polyunsaturated fatty acids: Focusing on the COVID-19

Covid-19 pandemic severely affected human health worldwide. The rapidly increasing COVID-19 cases and successive mutations of the virus have made it a major challenge for scientists to find the best and efficient drug/vaccine/strategy to counteract the virus pathogenesis. As a result of research in scientific databases, regulating the immune system and its responses with nutrients and nutritional interventions is the most critical solution to prevent and combat this infection. Also, modulating other organs such as the intestine with these compounds can lead to the vaccines' effectiveness. Marine resources, mainly algae, are rich sources of nutrients and bioactive compounds with known immunomodulatory properties and the gut microbiome regulations. According to the purpose of the review, algae-derived bioactive compounds with immunomodulatory activities, sulfated polysaccharides, and polyunsaturated fatty acids have a good effect on the immune system. In addition, they have probiotic/prebiotic properties in the intestine and modulate the gut microbiomes; therefore, they can increase the effectiveness of vaccines produced. Thus, they with respectable safety, immune regulation, and modulation of microbiota have potential therapeutic against infections, especially COVID-19. They can also be employed as promising candidates for the prevention and treatment of viral infections, such as COVID-19.
