Sol-gel hybrid coatings containing silica and a perfluoropolyether derivative with high resistance and anti-fouling properties in liquid media

Stability of Superhydrophobicity and Structure of PVDF Membranes Treated by Vacuum Oxygen Plasma and Organofluorosilanisation

Superhydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were obtained by a surface treatment consisting of oxygen plasma activation followed by functionalisation with a mixture of silica precursor (SiP) (tetraethyl-orthosilicate [TEOS] or 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propylamine [APTES]) and a fluoroalkylsilane (1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane), and were benchmarked with coated membranes without plasma activation. The modifications acted mainly on the surface, and the bulk properties remained stable. From a statistical design of experiments on surface hydrophobicity, the type of SiP was the most relevant factor, achieving the highest water contact angles (WCA) with the use of APTES, with a maximum WCA higher than 155° for membranes activated at a plasma power discharge of 15 W during 15 min, without membrane degradation. Morphological changes were observed on the membrane surfaces treated under these plasma conditions, showing a pillar-like structure with higher surface porosity. In long-term stability tests under moderate water flux conditions, the WCA of coated membranes which were not activated by oxygen plasma decreased to approximately 120° after the first 24 h (similar to the pristine membrane), whilst the WCA of plasma-treated membranes was maintained around 130° after 160 h. Thus, plasma pre-treatment led to membranes with a superhydrophobic performance and kept a higher hydrophobicity after long-term operations.

Flat PVDF Membrane with Enhanced Hydrophobicity through Alkali Activation and Organofluorosilanisation for Dissolved Methane Recovery

A three-step surface modification consisting of activation with NaOH, functionalisation with a silica precursor and organofluorosilane mixture (FSiT), and curing was applied to a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane for the recovery of dissolved methane (D-CH4) from aqueous streams. Based on the results of a statistical experimental design, the main variables affecting the water contact angle (WCA) were the NaOH concentration and the FSiT ratio and concentration used. The maximum WCA of the modified PVDF (mPVDFmax) was >140° at a NaOH concentration of 5%, an FSiT ratio of 0.55 and an FSiT concentration of 7.2%. The presence of clusters and a lower surface porosity of mPVDF was detected by FESEM analysis. In long-term stability tests with deionised water at 21 L h−1, the WCA of the mPVDF decreased rapidly to around 105°, similar to that of pristine nmPVDF. In contrast, the WCA of the mPVDF was always higher than that of nmPVDF in long-term operation with an anaerobic effluent at 3.5 L h−1 and showed greater mechanical stability, since water breakthrough was detected only with the nmPVDF membrane. D-CH4 degassing tests showed that the increase in hydrophobicity induced by the modification procedure increased the D-CH4 removal efficiency but seemed to promote fouling.

Formation of Composite Coatings on Galvanized Steel from Organosilane Solutions Using Electrophoresis and Sol-Gel Technology

New hybrid composite coatings (HCCs) on hot-dip galvanized steel (HDGS) were obtained using electrophoresis (cathodic polarization (CP)) and sol–gel technology. For this purpose, a technique for the preparation of a cationic precursor based on TiCl₄ and aminopropyltriethoxysilane was developed. Electrophoresis of the charged particles of the precursor and organosilanes promotes the production of denser sol–gel coatings with improved adhesion. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods, the formation mechanism and protective properties of HCC on galvanized steel were investigated.

Hybrid Sol-Gel Matrices Doped with Colorimetric/Fluorimetric Imidazole Derivatives

Organic-inorganic hybrids (OIH) are materials that can be easily synthesized by the sol-gel method and combine the advantages of organic and inorganic moieties within a single polymeric matrix. Imidazole derivatives are versatile organic compounds that can change their optical properties with the variation of pH due to the protonation or deprotonation of the nitrogen atoms. This work reports the preparation of different OIHs doped with different contents of two imidazole compounds (3a,b). The obtained materials were characterized structurally by FTIR, and the dielectric properties were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The optical properties were studied by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. The FTIR analysis showed that the presence of the imidazole does not change the structural properties of the matrices. The normalized resistance values obtained for the doped matrices ranged between 8.57 and 9.32 Ω cm2, all being higher than the undoped matrix. The σ ranged between 9.49 and 10.28 S cm-1, being all higher than the pure OIH samples. Compound 3a showed a maximum absorption peak at 390 nm, which is present in the OIH spectra, proving the presence of the compound. In the case of compound 3b, a maximum absorption wavelength at 412 nm was found, and the compound peak was not clear, which may indicate that an interaction between the compound and the matrix occurred. A synergetic effect between the intrinsic emission of the matrix and the fluorescence of 3a is found on the OIH-doped matrices.

Nanostructured Surface Finishing and Coatings: Functional Properties and Applications

This review presents current literature on different nanocomposite coatings and surface finishing for textiles, and in particular this study has focused on smart materials, drug-delivery systems, industrial, antifouling and nano/ultrafiltration membrane coatings. Each of these nanostructured coatings shows interesting properties for different fields of application. In this review, particular attention is paid to the synthesis and the consequent physico-chemical characteristics of each coating and, therefore, to the different parameters that influence the substrate deposition process. Several techniques used in the characterization of these surface finishing coatings were also described. In this review the sol-gel method for preparing stimuli-responsive coatings as smart sensor materials is described; polymers and nanoparticles sensitive to pH, temperature, phase, light and biomolecules are also treated; nanomaterials based on phosphorus, borates, hydroxy carbonates and silicones are used and described as flame-retardant coatings; organic/inorganic hybrid sol-gel coatings for industrial applications are illustrated; carbon nanotubes, metallic oxides and polymers are employed for nano/ultrafiltration membranes and antifouling coatings. Research institutes and industries have collaborated in the advancement of nanotechnology by optimizing conversion processes of conventional materials into coatings with new functionalities for intelligent applications.

Structural and Functional Properties of Fluorinated Silica Hybrid Barrier Layers on Flexible Polymeric Foil

The reported work was focused on sol–gel-derived organically modified and fluorinated silica coatings deposited on elastic polymeric foil. The structure and topography of the coatings were tested by infrared spectroscopy and microscopic studies. The functional properties were determined using thermal analysis, surface analysis, and oxygen permeability tests. The barrier feature of the investigated materials against oxygen was correlated with the properties of the coatings. The hybrid (organic–inorganic) structure of the coatings was proven, demonstrating the presence of a silica network modified with alkyl and fluoroalkyl groups since precursors with the isooctyl group or different lengths of the fluoroalkyl chains were used for the syntheses. The coatings were free of defects and had a smooth surface except for the sample containing the longest fluoroalkyl chain (perfluorododecyl group), which showed a wrinkle-like surface. The hydrophobic character of the coatings increased, whereas the oxygen permeation coefficient values decreased (reaching a fourfold lower coefficient in comparison to the bare substrate) with a higher content of the fluorinated carbon atoms in the structure. The results were enriched by the information from the thermomechanical analysis as well as nanoindentation and scratch tests giving values of the glass transition temperature, thermal expansion coefficient, coatings adhesion, and hardness of the investigated systems.

Omniphobic Etched Aluminum Surfaces with Anti-Icing Ability

In this work, omniphobic surfaces are developed by combining chemical etching and surface modification of aluminum. In the first step, hierarchical micro/nanostructuring is carried out by chemical etching. Thereafter, a perfluoropolyether is grafted onto the corrugated aluminum substrate, decreasing its surface free energy and turning the system omniphobic. The morphology and chemical composition of the developed surfaces are characterized. We observed a low affinity toward liquids, regardless of their chemical nature and surface tension. The surface shows superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle of 160° and simultaneously strong oleophobic properties with a hexadecane contact angle of 141°. Furthermore, these omniphobic surfaces significantly delay the freezing time of water droplets to 5100 s, which is about 20-fold of the freezing time on pristine aluminum (260 s), and they even inhibit ice growth by repelling the incoming droplets prior to ice nucleation.

Hybrid Sol-gel Coatings for Corrosion Mitigation: A Critical Review

The corrosion process is a major source of metallic material degradation, particularly in aggressive environments, such as marine ones. Corrosion progression affects the service life of a given metallic structure, which may end in structural failure, leakage, product loss and environmental pollution linked to large financial costs. According to NACE, the annual cost of corrosion worldwide was estimated, in 2016, to be around 3%-4% of the world's gross domestic product. Therefore, the use of methodologies for corrosion mitigation are extremely important. The approaches used can be passive or active. A passive approach is preventive and may be achieved by emplacing a barrier layer, such as a coating that hinders the contact of the metallic substrate with the aggressive environment. An active approach is generally employed when the corrosion is set in. That seeks to reduce the corrosion rate when the protective barrier is already damaged and the aggressive species (i.e., corrosive agents) are in contact with the metallic substrate. In this case, this is more a remediation methodology than a preventive action, such as the use of coatings. The sol-gel synthesis process, over the past few decades, gained remarkable importance in diverse areas of application. Sol-gel allows the combination of inorganic and organic materials in a single-phase and has led to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) coatings for several applications, including for corrosion mitigation. This manuscript succinctly reviews the fundamentals of sol-gel concepts and the parameters that influence the processing techniques. The state-of-the-art of the OIH sol-gel coatings reported in the last few years for corrosion protection, are also assessed. Lastly, a brief perspective on the limitations, standing challenges and future perspectives of the field are critically discussed.

Assessment of Antifouling Potential of Novel Transparent Sol Gel Coatings for Application in the Marine Environment

In recent years, there has become a growing need for the development of antifouling technology for application in the marine environment. The accumulation of large quantities of biomass on these surfaces cause substantial economic burdens within the marine industry, or adversely impact the performance of sensor technologies. Here, we present a study of transparent coatings with potential for applications on sensors or devices with optical windows. The focus of the study is on the abundance and diversity of biofouling organisms that accumulate on glass panels coated with novel transparent or opaque organically modified silicate (ORMOSIL) coatings. The diatom assessment was used to determine the effectiveness of the coatings against biofouling. Test panels were deployed in a marine environment in Galway Bay for durations of nine and thirteen months to examine differences in biofilm formation in both microfouling and macrofouling conditions. The most effective coating is one which consists of precursor, tetraethyl orthosilicate (HC006) that has a water contact angle > 100, without significant roughness (43.52 nm). However, improved roughness and wettability of a second coating, diethoxydimethylsilane (DMDEOS), showed real promise in relation to macrofouling reduction.

Antifouling Biomimetic Liquid-Infused Stainless Steel: Application to Dairy Industrial Processing

Fouling is a widespread and costly issue, faced by all food-processing industries. Particularly, in the dairy sector, where thermal treatments are mandatory to ensure product safety, heat-induced fouling represents up to 80% of the total production costs. Significant environmental impacts, due the massive consumption of water and energy, are also to deplore. Fouling control solutions are thus desperately needed, as they would lead to substantial financial gains as well as tremendous progress toward eco-responsible processes. This work aims at presenting a novel and very promising dairy fouling-mitigation strategy, inspired by nature, and to test its antifouling performances in real industrial conditions. Slippery liquid-infused surfaces were successfully designed directly on food grade stainless steel, via femtosecond laser ablation, followed by fluorosilanization and impregnation with an inert perfluorinated oil. Resulting hydrophobic surfaces (water contact angle of 112°) exhibited an extremely slippery nature (contact angle hysteresis of 0.6°). Outstanding fouling-release performances were obtained for these liquid-infused surfaces as absolutely no trace of dairy deposit was found after 90 min of pasteurization test in pilot-scale equipment followed by a short water rinse.
