Electrochemical treatment of simulated textile wastewater with industrial components and Levafix Blue CA reactive dye: optimization through response surface methodology

The impact of operational factors on degradation of formaldehyde as a human carcinogen using Ag3 PO4 /TiO2 photocatalyst

Background: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) identified formaldehyde as a carcinogen in 2004, yet formaldehyde is widely used in health care settings and various industries. In recent years, photocatalytic oxidation has been developed as a potential technique for removing pollutants arising from organic chemical agents and consequently promoting the health indices. This study investigated the effect of operational factors in optimizing formaldehyde removal from the air using Ag₃ PO₄ /TiO₂ photocatalyst. Methods: An experimental study was designed to investigate the effect of operational factors on the efficiency of formaldehyde degradation. The variables investigated in this study include pollutant retention time, initial pollutant concentration and relative humidity. Sol-gel method was used to synthesize the nano-composite photocatalyst. An ideal experimental design was carried out based on Box-Behnken design (BBD) with response surface methodology (RSM). The sample size in this study includes all the glasses coated with Ag₃ PO₄ /TiO₂ photocatalyst. Results: The maximum formaldehyde degradation of 32% was obtained at the initial concentration of 2 ppm, 20% relative humidity, and 90 minutes of retention time. Based on the statistical results, the correlation coefficient of the present study for the impact of operational factors on formaldehyde degradation was 0.9635, which means that there is only 3.65% probability of error in the model. Conclusion: The operational factors examined in this study (retention time, relative humidity, and initial formaldehyde concentration) were significantly influential in the degradation efficiency of formaldehyde by the photocatalyst. Due to the high exposure of employees and clients of health and treatment centers to formaldehyde as a carcinogenic substance, the results of this study can be used in ventilation systems to remove environmental pollutants in health care centers and other occupational settings.

Synthesis, Characterization, DFT and Photocatalytic Studies of a New Pyrazine Cadmium(II) Tetrakis(4-methoxy-phenyl)-porphyrin Compound

This study describes the synthesis, theoretical investigations, and photocatalytic degradational properties of a new (pyrazine)(meso-tetrakis(4-tert-methoxyphenyl)-porphyrinato)-cadmium (II) ([Cd(TMPP)-Pyz]) complex (1). The new penta-coordinated Cd^II porphyrin complex (1) was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, NMR, UV-visible absorption, fluorescence emission, and singlet oxygen, while its molecular structure was studied using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The UV–Vis spectroscopic study highlighted the redshift of the absorption bands after the insertion of the Cd(II) metal ion into the TMPP ring. The co-coordination of the pyrazine axial ligand enhanced this effect. A fluorescence emission spectroscopic study showed a significant blueshift in the Q bands, accompanied by a decrease in the fluorescence emission intensity and quantum yields of Φ_f = 0.084, Φ_f = 0.06 and Φ_f = 0.03 for H₂-TMPP free-base porphyrin, [Cd(TMPP)] and [Cd(TMPP)(Pyz)] (1) respectively. Singlet oxygen revealed that the H₂-TMPP porphyrin produced the most efficient singlet oxygen quantum yield of (Φ_Δ = 0.73) compared to [CdTMPP] (Φ_Δ = 0.57) and [Cd(TMPP)(Pyz)] (1) (Φ_Δ = 0.13). In the crystal lattice, the [Cd(TMPP)Pyz] was stabilized through non-covalent intermolecular interactions (NCI), such as the hydrogen bonds C-H···N and C-H···Cg. Additionally, crystal explorer software was then utilized to measure the quantitative analysis of the intermolecular interactions in the unit cell of the crystal structure and established that the C-H···π interaction dominated. The Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis revealed that each molecule is stabilized by hyperconjugation and charge delocalization. As a photocatalyst, the coordination complex 1 showed excellent photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of Levafix Blue CA reactive dye (i.e., dye photo-degradation of 80%).

Enhanced dye-removal performance of Cu-TiO2-fly ash composite by optimized adsorption and photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation

The performance of Cu/TiO₂/FA composite, a hybrid adsorbent-photocatalyst consisting of copper-doped titania particles supported on fly ash, was optimized, under visible light irradiation, for the removal of the model dye pollutant methyl orange (MO) by using a response surface methodology and Box-Behnken experimental design. Three independent variables were considered for the optimization study: catalyst/solvent dosage (0.5 - 2.0 g/L), irradiation time (30-120 min), and the initial concentration (5- 25 ppm) of the dye. A 99.91% rate of removal was achieved using 2 g/L dosage, 5 ppm initial concentration, and 100 min of irradiation time as the optimal operating conditions. The recorded trends support the hypothesis of a combined and synergic adsorption-photocatalytic degradation process which fully exploits the "capture and destroy" approach for pollutant removal.

Removal of Nickel Ions from Aqueous Solutions by 2-Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Itaconic Acid Hydrogels Optimized with Response Surface Methodology

The adsorption of Ni²⁺ ions from water solutions by using hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and itaconic acid (IA) was studied. Hydrogel synthesis was optimized with response surface methodology (RSM). The hydrogel with the best adsorption capacity towards Ni²⁺ ions was chosen for further experiments. The hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis before and after the adsorption of Ni²⁺ ions. Batch equilibrium experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of solution pH, hydrogel weight, ionic strength, adsorption time, temperature and initial concentration of nickel ions on the adsorption. Time-dependent adsorption fitted the best to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. A thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption was an exothermic and non-spontaneous process. Five isotherm models were studied, and the best fit was obtained with the Redlich-Peterson model. Consecutive adsorption/desorption studies indicated that the HEA/IA hydrogel can be efficiently used as a sorbent for the removal of Ni²⁺ ions from the water solution. This study develops a potential adsorbent for the effective removal of trace nickel ions.

Optimization of Fenton process for removing TOC and color from swine wastewater using response surface method (RSM)

The Fenton oxidation process was applied to biologically treated swine wastewater (BSWW) for the removal of TOC and color constituents after coagulation with FeCl₃. Optimizing of operational variables such as FeSO₄ and H₂O₂ doses was achieved by the response surface method (RSM). Statistical analysis led to the conclusion that FeSO₄ is the more important than H₂O₂ in the removal of TOC. However, H₂O₂ plays a more significant role than FeSO₄ in color removal. The optimal conditions for effective removal of TOC and color from swine wastewater were derived by using process optimization. The experimental results show that overall removal of TOC and color is 76.7% and 98%, respectively, when optimal conditions of 800 mg/L (FeSO₄) and 5207 mg/L (H₂O₂) at 120 min were used. Furthermore, the optimization model produces a desirability value of 0.980 that verifies the optimal conditions. Finally, it is observed that removal of undesirable compounds follows a pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetics model with high R² values of 0.99 for both TOC and color removal, respectively. Statistical analysis and process optimization show that the employed model may determine conditions conducive to the effective removal of TOC and color from swine wastewater.

Cu2O as an emerging semiconductor in photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic treatment of water contaminated with organic substances: a review

A wide range of semiconductor photocatalysts have been used over the years in water treatment to eliminate toxic organic substances from wastewater. The quest for visible or solar light driven photocatalysts with striking merits such as wide range of applications, ease of preparation, tailored architecture that gives rise to improved performance, ability of dual existence as both p type or n type semiconductor, among others, presents copper(i) oxide as a promising photocatalyst. This paper reviews the recent applications of Cu2O in photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic treatment of water laden with organic pollutants such as dyes and pharmaceuticals. It covers the various modes of synthesis, morphologies and composites or heterostructures of Cu2O as found in the literature. Concluding remarks and future perspectives on the application of Cu2O are presented.

Fate and removal of antibiotic resistance genes in heavy metals and dye co-contaminated wastewater treatment system amended with β-cyclodextrin functionalized biochar

Biochar has been received increasing concerns regarding its environmental effect, which is promising in wastewater treatment. In this study, the performance of β-cyclodextrin functionalized biochar (β-BC) on the removal of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in wastewater treatment under the co-stresses of heavy metals and dye is evaluated. Results show that when 20 mg/L heavy metals (HMs) and 150 mg/L methyl orange (MO) are present in daily fed influent, only 0.05 mg/L HMs residual and 96.79%-98.84% MO removal efficiency achieved in β-BC additive group, compare to 0.16 mg/L and 87.92%-94.11% of that in control, respectively, indicating that β-BC can benefits the performance of contaminants removal. To evaluate the role of β-BC plays on ARGs in multi-contaminants stressed system, tet W, tet M, sul-1, sul-2, bla_TEM, oxa-1, qnr-S, erm-B and intI-1 are identified. The relative abundance of all identified ARGs are decreased when β-BC presence compared to the corresponding groups without β-BC additive. The diversity and composition of microbial community are explored and the reduction of potential antibiotic-resistant bacteria is speculated as a driver of ARGs removal. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that β-BC possesses the ability to promote the removal of ARGs during continuous wastewater treatment under HMs-MO co-contaminant.

Efficient nitrogen removal from synthetic domestic wastewater in a novel step-feed three-stage integrated anoxic/oxic biological aerated filter process through optimizing influent flow distribution ratio

In this study, a novel step-feed three-stage integrated anoxic/oxic biological aerated filter (STIAOBAF) process was developed to enhance nitrogen removal from the synthetic domestic wastewater through optimizing influent flow distribution ratio (IFDR) for three stage reactors (R1, R2, R3). Long-term operation demonstrated that the maximum nitrogen removal efficiency was achieved at the IFDR of 30%:50%:20%. The corresponding effluent total nitrogen (TN) was less than 10 mg/L, superior to the first A grade discharge standard of China (Effluent TN < 15 mg/L). The IFDR was further optimized to 32%:49%:19% by response surface methodology (RSM) model, thus obtaining the highest TN removal efficiency of 81.4%. Nitrogen profiles suggested the 2nd stage reactor was the greatest significant contributor for nitrogen removal of the whole system. Microbial community analysis revealed that Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Acidobacteria were abundant in anoxic zones, while Planctomycetes, Bacteroidetes and Verrucomicrobia were rich in oxic zones. Nitrogen removal-associated functional bacterial groups (Nitrospira, Thauera, Azospira and Candidatus Kuenenia) were also identified, supporting high-rate nitrogen removal through the combination of anoxic denitrification with aerobic simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). The STIAOBAF will offer a compact and robust alternative for advanced nitrogen removal from the sewage.

Application of response surface methodology in physicochemical removal of dyes from wastewater: A critical review

Response surface methodology (RSM) is a powerful tool in designing the experiments and optimizing different environmental processes. However, when it comes to wastewater treatment and specifically dye-containing wastewater, two questions arise; "Is RSM being used correctly?" and "Are all capabilities of RSM being exploited properly?". The current review paper aims to answer these questions by scrutinizing different physicochemical processes that utilized RSM in dye removal. The literature that applied RSM to adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, coagulation/flocculation and electrocoagulation processes were critically reviewed in this paper. The common errors in applying RSM to physicochemical removal of dyes are identified and some suggestions are made for future studies.

Microwave-assisted pyrolysis of textile dyeing sludge, and migration and distribution of heavy metals

This study investigated the pyrolysis characteristic of textile dyeing sludge (DS) using an auger pyrolyser under microwave irradiation at different pyrolysis temperature. The migration and distribution characteristic of heavy metals and their potential ecological risks were investigated using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) techniques. Temperature and additives (e.g. Ca-bentonite, kaolin and CaO) significantly affected product distribution and yields. Heavy metals showed different enrichment characteristics during pyrolysis and a great percentage of the heavy metals was retained in the sludge char (SC), depending on different temperatures and additives. CaO had a strong ability for retention of S, Pb and Ni. Ca-bentonite, kaolin and CaO had considerable ability to retain Cr at 650 ℃. Ca-bentonite and CaO had positive effects on Ni retention at 450 °C and 650 °C. As was enriched at 450 °C with addition of Ca-bentonite. Cu and Zn were enriched at 450 °C and 850 °C without additives and the corresponding residue ratios (RRs) were 88.68-100%, which indicated good stability of these heavy metals during microwave pyrolysis of DS. The heavy metal contents in SC were lower than those in the national standards (CJ/T 362-2011, China) and these heavy metals showed slight potential ecological risk to the environment.

Response surface methodology optimization for sorption of malachite green dye on sugarcane bagasse biochar and evaluating the residual dye for phyto and cytogenotoxicity

In the present study, sorption and detoxification of malachite green (MG) dye was executed using biochar resulting after pyrolysis of agro-industrial waste at 400, 600 and 800 °C. Maximum sorption of MG dye (3000 mg/L) was observed on the sugarcane bagasse biochar (SCB) prepared at 800 °C. The interactive effects of different factors like dye concentration, time, pH and temperature on sorption of MG dye were investigated using response surface methodology (RSM). Optimum MG dye concentration, contact time, temperature and pH predicted through Box-Behnken based RSM model were 3000 mg/L MG dye, 51.89 min, 60 °C and 7.5, respectively. ANOVA analysis displayed the non-significant lack of fit value (0.4566), whereas, the predicted correlation coefficient values (R² 0.8494) were reasonably in agreement with the adjusted value (R² 0.9363) demonstrating highly significant model for MG dye sorption. The applicability of this model was also checked through F- test (30.39) with lower probability (0.0001) value. Furthermore, the characterization of SCB was performed using fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surfaces (BET), total organic carbon (TOC) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Phyto-toxicity and cytogenotoxicity studies showed successful removal of MG dye using SCB. In addition, the batch sorption studies for reutilization of SCB revealed that the SCB was effective in removal of MG for five repeated cycles. This technology would be effective for treating the toxic textile effluent released from the textile industries.

Electrocatalytic degradation and minimization of specific energy consumption of synthetic azo dye from wastewater by anodic oxidation process with an emphasis on enhancing economic efficiency and reaction mechanism

This work focused on the knowledge-based methodology for the development of an electrochemical system, enabling simultaneous optimization of various operating parameters such as current density (j), initial dye concentration (C_o), NaCl concentration (C_N) for the mineralization of Reactive Violet 2 (RV-2) and Acid Brown 14 (AB-14) dye on the efficiency of removal, energy consumption (EC), Chemical Oxygen Demands (COD), apparent rate constants (k_app) and Electrical Energy per Order (E_EO) all of which have been examined. The relationship between k_app and E_EO is also discussed. The degradation efficiency and k_app always rising at higher j and lower C_o and C_N while EC, E_EO, and operating cost increased at higher j, C_o and C_N. On the other hand, The COD increased with decrease j, Co and higher C_N. Due to the strong formation of hydroxyl radicals from water discharge, the graphite electrode possesses a strong power of electro-generation rate and competitive wasting reactions of organic compounds. The results demonstrated that the relatively high dye removal, COD and low specific energy consumption are obtained simultaneously only if the various parameters are regulated to a plausible value j of 79Am^-2, Co of 100mg/L and C_N of 1g/L within 60min of electrolysis. The color removal efficiency is much faster for RV-2 compared to AB-14 due to the contribution of azo bond in the dye molecule. Also, the EC and k_app are higher for RV-2 than AB-14 while is lower in terms of E_EO and COD. A comprehensive reaction sequence of RV-2 and AB-14 mineralization involving all oxidation products was proposed. Formation and evolution of aromatic and aliphatic (short-chain carboxylic acids) intermediates during the treatment and a mineralization pathway is proposed. The estimated cost of operation for degradation at optimum conditions is calculated as 1.54 and 1.29 USD m^-3/g dye for complete degradation RV-2 and AB-14, respectively.

Textile dye biodecolourization and ammonium removal over nitrite in aerobic granular sludge sequencing batch reactors

Biodecolourization of azo dye and removal of ammonium by aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was investigated under different growth conditions. AGS not previously exposed to azo dye was able to effectively decolourize azo dye under anaerobic and microaerophilic conditions. Azo dye, total organic carbon and ammoniacal nitrogen removal efficiencies of 89-100%, 79-95% and 92-100%, respectively, were achieved in the AGS reactor operated for 80days under microaerophilic conditions. Removal of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus was not impacted by azo dye loading. Azo dye, organic carbon and ammonium were majorly removed in the anoxic period wherein bulk dissolved oxygen was ranged from 0.5 and <0.08mgL^-1. Removal of 60mgL^-1 NH₄⁺-N was associated only with smaller amounts of nitrite build-up (∼5mgL^-1 NO₂^--N) and negligible nitrate concentrations. Profiles of nitrogen compounds in individual sequencing batch reactor cycles supported the occurrence of ammonium removal over nitrite pathway. Bacterial community analysis showed enrichment of specific microorganisms capable of decolourizing azo dyes in the dye-decolourizing AGS. Dye decolourization and nutrient removal by AGS under microaerophilic conditions is a novel finding and can be further developed for treating textile wastewaters onsite or after dilution with sewage.

The application of iron mesh double layer as anode for the electrochemical treatment of Reactive Black 5 dye

In this work a novel anode configuration consisting of an iron mesh double layer is proposed for the electrochemical treatment of wastewater. The removal of Reactive Black 5 dye (RB5) from synthetic contaminated water was used as a model system. At a constant anode surface area, identical process operating parameters and batch process mode, the iron mesh double layer electrode showed better performance compared to the conventional single layer iron mesh. The double layer electrode was characterized by RB5 and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 98.2% and 97.7%, respectively, kinetic rate constant of 0.0385/min, diffusion coefficient of 4.9×10^-5cm²/sec and electrical energy consumption of 20.53kWh/kg_{dye removed}. In the continuous flow system, the optimum conditions suggested by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) are: initial solution pH of 6.29, current density of 1.6mA/cm², electrolyte dose of 0.15g/L and flow rate of 11.47mL/min which resulted in an RB5 removal efficiency of 81.62%.

A review of electrocoagulation technology for the treatment of textile wastewater

The conventional coagulation technique of textile wastewater treatments is plagued with the issue of low removal rate of pollutants and generation of a large quantity of sludge. Recently, electrocoagulation (EC) technique gained immense attention due to its efficiency. The technique involves dissolution of the sacrificial anodes to provide an active metal hydroxide as a strong coagulant that destabilizes and amasses particles and then removes them by precipitation or adsorption. EC process is influenced by operating parameters such as applied current density, electrodes material and configuration, type of electrical connection, pH and conductivity of the solution, and mixing state. Consequently, this work reviewed the major and minor reactions of EC process with operational parameters, design of EC cell, mass transfer studies and modeling, and industrial wastewater applications. The work also includes comparison of EC technique with conventional coagulation and combinations with other techniques. Special emphasis is on removal of pollutants from textile wastewater. Further, the electrical energy supplies and cost analysis are also discussed. Even though several publications have covered EC process recently, no review work has treated the systematic process design and how to minimize the effect of passivation layer deposited on the surface of the electrodes. EC process with rotating electrodes has been recommended to reduce this phenomenon. The effect of electrodes geometry is considered to enhance the conductivity of the cell and reduce energy consumption. The studies of ionic mass transfer were not implemented before special by limiting current method during the EC process. Moreover, no aforementioned studies used computational fluid dynamics modeling to present the mass transfer inside the EC reactor.

Degradation of aromatic amines in textile-dyeing sludge by combining the ultrasound technique with potassium permanganate treatment

This paper reports, for the first time, a combined technique of ultrasound (US) with KMnO4 degradation of aromatic amines in a textile-dyeing sludge. The reaction mechanisms and the degradation kinetics of aromatic amines at various operating parameters (KMnO4 dosage, US power density and pH) were systematically examined by the combined system of US-KMnO4. The results indicated that there was a synergistic effect between US and KMnO4, as US greatly enhanced KMnO4 in the degradation of aromatic amines and exhibited apparent sludge disintegration and separated pollutants from the sludge. In addition to accelerating the Mn(VII) reaction with pollutants in the filtrate, US also caused Mn(VII) to enter the porous sludge and sufficiently facilitated the reaction of the strongly absorbed aromatic amines. The combined treatment of US-KMnO4 was effective in the degradation of aromatic amines in textile-dyeing sludge. On average, 58.7% of monocyclic anilines, 88.3% of other forms of aromatic amines, and 24.0% of TOC were removed under the optimal operating conditions of a KMnO4 dosage of 12mM, an US power density of 1.80W/cm(3) and pH 5. The present study proposed US-KMnO4 treatment as a practical method for the disposal of aromatic amines in textile-dyeing sludge.

Optimization of a combined electrocoagulation-electroflotation reactor

This work studies the efficiency of an electroflotation process for the separation of the solids produced during the electrocoagulation treatment of three different types of wastewater: kaolin suspension, coloured organic solution and oil-in-water emulsion. Additionally, a combined electrocoagulation-electroflotation reactor is designed and optimized taking into account the effect of current density, residence time, pollutant concentration and the ratio floated/settled solids. To do this, an experimental design with response surface methodology (RSM) has been used. Results show that electroflotation is a good alternative to the removal of oil microdrops and dyes, but it is not recommended for the separation of solids formed during electrocoagulation of colloid suspensions due to its high density. It has been found that the use of aluminium leads to better results than the use of iron in the treatment of oil-in-water emulsions and coloured solutions. In these cases, the use of a combined electrocoagulation-electroflotation reactor is recommended and the effect of the main inputs has been studied.

Treatment of textile effluent containing recalcitrant dyes using MOF derived Fe-ZSM-5 heterogeneous catalyst

Fe-ZSM-5 is synthesized through a newly established 2-step process. 82% yield of Fe-ZSM-5 catalyst is possible at low temperature and pressure. 100% degradation of dyes is achieved with lesser amounts of catalyst and H₂O₂.

Enhancement of Treatment Efficiency of Recalcitrant Wastewater Containing Textile Dyes Using a Newly Developed Iron Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 Heterogeneous Catalyst

Fenton oxidation, an advanced oxidation process, is an efficient method for the treatment of recalcitrant wastewaters. Unfortunately, it utilizes H2O2 and iron-based homogeneous catalysts, which lead to the formation of high volumes of sludge and secondary pollutants. To overcome these problems, an alternate option is the usage of heterogeneous catalyst. In this study, a heterogeneous catalyst was developed to provide an alternative solution for homogeneous Fenton oxidation. Iron Zeolite Socony Mobile-5 (Fe-ZSM-5) was synthesized using a new two-step process. Next, the catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis and tested against a model wastewater containing the azo dye Acid Blue 113. Results showed that the loading of iron particles reduced the surface area of the catalyst from 293.59 to 243.93 m2/g; meanwhile, the average particle size of the loaded material was 12.29 nm. Furthermore, efficiency of the developed catalyst was evaluated by performing heterogeneous Fenton oxidation. Taguchi method was coupled with principal component analysis in order to assess and optimize mineralization efficiency. Experimental results showed that under optimized conditions, over 99.7% degradation and 77% mineralization was obtained, with a 90% reduction in the consumption of the developed catalyst. Furthermore, the developed catalyst was stable and reusable, with less than 2% leaching observed under optimized conditions. Thus, the present study proved that newly developed catalyst has enhanced the oxidation process and reduced the chemicals consumption.

Aromatic amine contents, component distributions and risk assessment in sludge from 10 textile-dyeing plants

Aromatic amines (AAs), which are components of synthetic dyes, are recalcitrant to the wastewater treatment process and can accumulate in sludge produced by textile-dyeing, which may pose a threat to the environment. A comprehensive investigation of 10 textile-dyeing plants was undertaken in Guangdong Province in China. The contents and component distributions of AAs were evaluated in this study, and a risk assessment was performed. The total concentrations of 14 AAs (Σ14 AAs) varied from 11 μg g(-1)dw to 82.5 μg g(-1)dw, with a mean value of 25 μg g(-1)dw. The component distributions of AAs were characterized by monocyclic anilines, of which 2-methoxy-5-methylaniline and 5-nitro-o-toluidine were the most dominant components. The risk quotient (RQ) value was used to numerically evaluate the ecological risk of 14 AAs in the environment. The result showed that the 14 AAs contents in textile-dyeing sludge may pose a high risk to the soil ecosystem after being discarded on soil or in a landfill.

Ultrasound-Assisted Aqueous Two-Phase System for Extraction and Enrichment of Zanthoxylum armatum Lignans

In the study, an aqueous two phase system (ATPS) coupled with ultrasound was employed to extract lignans from Zanthoxylum armatum. Three standard lignans, namely (−)-fargesin, sesamin and L-asarinin, were used as marker compounds, and extraction was optimized and projected by response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). The optimal condition for ATPS with 20% n-propanol and 24% (NH₄)₂SO₄ coupled with ultrasonic-assisted extraction including a solvent to solid ratio of 15:1, a temperature of 40 °C, and a treatment time of 55 min was obtained. Under the condition, the yield of (−)-fargesin increased 15.12%, and the purities of (−)-fargesin, sesamin and L-asarinin reached 2.222%, 1.066%, and 1.583%, with an increase of 44.38%, 25.70%, and 26.34% compared to those extracted with 95% ethanol, respectively. Coefficient of the determined (0.9855) and mean squared error (0.0018) of ANN model suggested good fitness and generalization of the ANN. Taken together, the results showed that ultrasonic-assisted ATPS can be a suitable method for extraction and enrichment of lignans from Z. armatum.

Simple Response Surface Methodology: Investigation on Advance Photocatalytic Oxidation of 4-Chlorophenoxyacetic Acid Using UV-Active ZnO Photocatalyst

The performance of advance photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA) strongly depends on photocatalyst dosage, initial concentration and initial pH. In the present study, a simple response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to investigate the interaction between these three independent factors. Thus, the photocatalytic degradation of 4-CPA in aqueous medium assisted by ultraviolet-active ZnO photocatalyst was systematically investigated. This study aims to determine the optimum processing parameters to maximize 4-CPA degradation. Based on the results obtained, it was found that a maximum of 91% of 4-CPA was successfully degraded under optimal conditions (0.02 g ZnO dosage, 20.00 mg/L of 4-CPA and pH 7.71). All the experimental data showed good agreement with the predicted results obtained from statistical analysis.

Effects of the steric hindrance of micropores in the hyper-cross-linked polymeric adsorbent on the adsorption of p-nitroaniline in aqueous solution

A hyper-cross-linked polymeric adsorbent with "--CH2--phenol--CH2--" as the cross-linked bridge (denoted GQ-05), and another hyper-cross-linked polymeric adsorbent with "--CH2--p-cresol--CH2--" as the cross-linked bridge (denoted GQ-03) were synthesized to reveal the effect of the steric hindrance of micropores in the hyper-cross-linked polymeric adsorbent on adsorption capacity and adsorption rate of p-nitroaniline (PNA) from aqueous solution. The results of adsorption kinetics indicated the order of the adsorption rate GQ-05>GQ-03. The pseudo-first-order rate equation could describe the entire adsorption process of PNA onto GQ-05 while the equation characterized the adsorption process of GQ-03 in two stages. The order of the adsorption capacity GQ-05>GQ-03 was demonstrated by thermodynamic analysis and dynamic adsorption. The steric hindrance of micropores in the hyper-cross-linked polymeric adsorbent was a crucial factor for the order of the adsorption capacity and adsorption rate.

Levels, composition profiles and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sludge from ten textile dyeing plants

As components of synthetic dyes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present as contaminants in textile dyeing sludge due to the recalcitrance in wastewater treatment process, which may pose a threat to environment in the process of sludge disposal. In order to evaluate PAHs in textile dyeing sludge, comprehensive investigation comprising 10 textile dyeing plants was undertaken. Levels, composition profiles and risk assessment of 16 EPA-priority PAHs were analyzed in this study. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs (∑16 PAHs) varied from 1463 ± 177 ng g(-1) to 16,714 ± 1,507 ng g(-1) with a mean value of 6386 ng g(-1). The composition profiles of PAHs were characterized by 3- and 4-ring PAHs, among which phenanthrene, anthracene and fluoranthene were the most dominant components. The mean benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (BaPeq) concentration of ∑16 PAHs in textile dyeing sludge was 423 ng g(-1), which was 2-3 times higher than concentrations reported for urban soil. According to ecological risk assessment, the levels of PAHs in the textile dyeing sludge may cause a significant risk to soil ecosystem after landfill or dumping on soil.
