Abstract
Conventional nanozyme-based pesticide detection often requires the assistance of acetylcholinesterase. In this work, a CuCeTA nanozyme was successfully designed for the direct colorimetric detection of glyphosate. Direct detection can effectively avoid the problems caused by cascading with natural enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase. By assembling tannic acid, copper sulfate pentahydrate and cerium(III) nitrate hexahydrate, CuCeTA nanoflowers were prepared. The obtained CuCeTA possessed excellent peroxidase-like activity that could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxidized TMB in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Glyphosate could effectively inhibit the peroxidase-like activity of CuCeTA while other pesticides (fenthion, chlorpyrifos, profenofos, phosmet, bromoxynil and dichlorophen) did not show significant inhibitory effects on the catalytic activity of CuCeTA. In this way, CuCeTA could be used for the colorimetric detection of glyphosate with a low detection limit of 0.025 ppm. Combined with a smartphone and imageJ software, a glyphosate test paper was designed with a detection limit of 3.09 ppm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that glyphosate and CuCeTA might be bound by coordination, which could affect the catalytic activity of CuCeTA. Our CuCeTA-based nanozyme system exhibited unique selectivity and sensitivity for glyphosate detection and this work may provide a new strategy for rapid and convenient detection of pesticides.

Abstract
Pyraquinate, a newly developed 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase class herbicide, has shown excellent control of resistant weeds in paddy fields. However, its environmental degradation products and corresponding ecotoxicological risks after field application remain ambiguous. In this study, we systematically investigate the photolytic behaviors of pyraquinate in aqueous solutions and in response to xenon lamp irradiation. The degradation follows first-order kinetics, and its rate depends on pH and the amount of organic matter. No vulnerability to light radiation is indicated. Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and UNIFI software analysis reveals six photoproducts generated by methyl oxidation, demethylation, oxidative dechlorination, and ester hydrolysis. Gaussian calculation suggests that activities due to hydroxyl radicals or aquatic oxygen atoms caused these reactions on the premise of obeying thermodynamic criteria. Practical toxicity test results show that the toxicity of pyraquinate to zebrafish embryos is low but increases when the compound is combined with its photoproducts.

Abstract
Dichlorophenol (DCP), a commonly used fungicide and insecticide, is widely found in waters and wastewaters. Herein, the degradation of DCP by Ferrate (Fe(VI)) in different matrices was comprehensively investigated. In pure water, a complete removal of DCP was achieved in 300 s at [Fe(VI)]:[DCP] molar ratio of 2:1. The presence of HA (10 mg L-1) inhibited DCP degradation to a certain extent. A total of twenty degradation products were identified by HPLC/MS analysis. Based on these products, reaction pathways including the cleavage of C-C bridge bond, hydroxylation, and radical coupling were proposed. These reaction mechanisms were further rationalized by theoretical calculations. The analyses of Wiberg bond orders and transition state indicated that C7-C8 bond was the most vulnerable site for cleavage, and C12 site was the most likely site for hydroxyl addition. Mulliken atomic spin densities distribution suggested that self-coupling products was easily generated via C-O-C coupling ways. Finally, the feasibility of applying Fe(VI) to degrade DCP (20 μM) in a municipal wastewater effluent and a lake water was evaluated and verified. The findings in this study are of relevance in designing Fe(VI)-based treatment strategy for chlorine-containing persistent pesticides.

Abstract
Benzotriazole UV-stabilizers (BUVSs) are commonly used in industry as solar filters, due to their strong UV light absorption. Because of their extended usage, environmental contamination of waters due to BUVSs constitutes a growing concern. Direct photodegradation of BUVSs is not efficient due to their intrinsic thermal pathways to release the absorbed light. Nevertheless, their abatement in natural environments could be assisted by chromophoric dissolved organic matter. Among the BUVSs, three representative candidates were selected, UV-326, UV-327 and UV-328, to demonstrate the potential of Riboflavin (RF) as a natural visible-light absorbing photocatalyst for the abatement of these recalcitrant pollutants under reductive conditions. The use of visible light and DABCO, as a model sacrificial electron donor, generates the radical anion RFTA.-. This key species reacts with the solar filters, achieving their reductive abatement from the medium. Moreover, the participation of every potential reactive species has been investigated by photophysical techniques, together with determination of the quenching rate constant for every reaction pathway. Consequently, evidence supported the main role of the reductive photodegradation pathway, being RFTA.- the key species in the abatement of BUVSs.

Abstract
Herbicides are widely applied in agriculture, which causes emerging concern for contaminating surface water and groundwater. The degradation of isoproturon, being a typical phenylurea herbicide, has been studied much with advanced oxidation processes. However, little information on the detailed degradation mechanism from the theoretical level is available. In the present work, the degradation mechanisms of OH-initiated reactions of isoproturon were studied at the MPWB1K/6-311+G(3df, 2p)//MPWB1K/6-31+G(d, p) level. The calculation results display that H-atom abstraction, ·OH addition, and ·OH substitution pathways are found for ·OH and isoproturon reactions. For H-atom abstractions, the results show that aliphatic H atoms are more easily abstracted by ·OH than the aromatic H atoms, and the pathway R6 has the lowest energy barrier of 6.65 kcal mol-1, indicating that H in the -CH3 group attached to the N2 atom could be most favorably abstracted. Six pathways for ·OH addition to the six sites of the phenyl ring are identified with low energy barriers, which are in good accordance with the fact that the additions of ·OH to the phenyl ring were the important steps from experimental results. For ·OH substitution reactions, two pathways with high activation energies are found, and the corresponding products have been also detected from previous experimental studies, suggesting that the substitution reactions could also occur.

Abstract
Singlet oxygen sensitization involving a class of hemiquinonoid-substituted resorcinarenes prepared from the corresponding 3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl-substituted resorcinarenes is reported. Based on variation in the molecular structures, quantum yields comparable with that of the well-known photosensitizing compound meso-tetraphenylporphyrin were obtained for the octabenzyloxy-substituted double hemiquinonoid resorcinarene reported herein. The following classes of compounds were studied: benzyloxy-substituted resorcinarenes, acetyloxy-substituted resorcinarenes and acetyloxy-substituted pyrogallarenes. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses revealed structural variations in the compounds with conformation (i.e., rctt, rccc, rcct) having some influence on the identity of hemiquinonoid product available. Multiplicity of hemiquinonoid group affects singlet oxygen quantum yield with those doubly substituted being more active than those containing a single hemiquinone. Compounds reported here lacking hemiquinonoid groups are inactive as photosensitizers. The term 'fuchsonarene' (fuchson + arene of resorcinarene) is proposed for use to classify the compounds.

Abstract
A direct, controlled comparison of the photodegradation of imazethapyr has been made between imazethapyr in aqueous solutions, imazethapyr on the surface of epicuticular waxes of corn and soybean plants, and imazethapyr on the surface of intact corn and soybean plant leaves. In some experiments, the imazethapyr solutions were allowed to evaporate partially or fully after application to better model environmental conditions. The photodegradation of imazethapyr was fastest in aqueous solutions (k = 0.16 ± 0.02 h-1) and slowest on the surface of corn and soybean plants (kcorn = 0.00048 ± 0.001 h-1 and ksoy = 0.00054 ± 0.003 h-1). Experiments allowing evaporation during irradiation have intermediate rate constants (e.g., kcorn = 0.082 ± 0.005 h-1). Finally, identification of photoproducts was also examined on epicuticular waxes of corn and soybean plants for the first time.

Abstract
Riboflavin (Rf) is an endogenous photosensitizer, which can participate in Type I and Type II processes. We have recently shown that the yield of the triplet excited states of Rf is enhanced in the presence of pectin-coated silver nanoparticles (Pec@AgNP) due to formation of a complex between Rf and Pec@AgNP (Rf-Pec@AgNP). Consequently, under aerobic conditions, the amounts of singlet molecular oxygen and superoxide radical anion generated are also larger in the presence of the nanoparticles. This result made us suspect that the nanoparticles could have a beneficial effect in Rf-based PDT. To prove this hypothesis, we here compared the photodamage in HeLa cells incubated with Rf in the presence and in the absence of Pec@AgNP applying several optical assays. We used fluorescence imaging of irradiated HeLa cells incubated with Annexin V and propidium iodide to evaluate the occurrence of apoptosis/necrosis, the reduction of the tetrazolium dye MTT to formazan and neutral red uptake to prove cell viability, as well as synchrotron infrared microscopy of single cells to evaluate possible structural changes of DNA and nuclear proteins. The enhanced photodamage observed in the presence of Pec@AgNP seems to indicate that Rf enters into the cells complexed with the nanoparticles.

OBJECTIVES Catechins are important components of human diet and have received special attention due to their antioxidant capacity. The purpose of this paper was to study the antioxidant action of (+)-catechin (CTQ) in the presence of vitamin B2 (riboflavin) as light-absorbing agent. Furthermore, two model compounds, catechol (CTC) and resorcinol (RSC), were selected in order to elucidate the reactive target of the CTQ molecule. The influence of pH-medium was investigated. METHODS Stationary photolysis, polarographic detection of dissolved oxygen, reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavengers, time-resolved near-IR phosphorescence detection, stationary, and time-resolved fluorescence and laser flash photolysis techniques were employed. RESULTS CTQ interacts with riboflavin under visible-light photoirradiation as well as with different ROS which are generated in this mechanism. Radical-scavenging activity increases with increasing of pH-medium. DISCUSSION pH-effect of the medium on radical-scavenging activity comes from the increased electron-donating ability of CTQ upon deprotonation. These results are very interesting due to the fact that the pH of the food products displays important variations. The [Formula: see text]-scavenging ability of CTQ, would be equal to the additive contribution of each reactive center, CTC, and RSC, present at the molecule of CTQ. However, CTQ would have a moderate ability to removal of [Formula: see text]-species at pH 7.

Abstract
As active agents in cleaning and disinfecting products, antimicrobials have been widely spread in the environment and have drawn extensive attention as potential threats to the ecological system and human health. In this study, the laccase-catalyzed removal of two emerging antimicrobials, chlorophene (CP) and dichlorophen (DCP), was investigated under simulated environmental conditions. Intrinsic reaction kinetics showed that the removal of CP and DCP followed second-order reaction kinetics, first-order with respect to both the enzyme and the substrate concentration. It was also found that fulvic acid could suppress the transformation of CP and DCP by reversing the oxidation reactions through its action as a scavenger of the free radical intermediates produced from reactions between laccase and the substrates. Several reaction products were identified by a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and detailed reaction pathways were proposed. For both CP and DCP, direct polymerization was the principal pathway, and the coupling patterns were further corroborated based on molecular modeling. The nucleophilic substitution of chlorine by the hydroxyl group was observed, and further oxidation products capable of coupling with each other were also found. Additionally, toxicity evaluation tests using Scenedesmus obliquus confirmed that the toxicity of CP and DCP was effectively eliminated during the reaction processes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The multifunctional drug niclosamide (NSD), extensively employed therapeutically, is a frequent pollutant of surface waters. Considering the environmental importance of photodegradative processes for this type of contaminant, the kinetic and mechanistic aspects of the possible visible-light-mediated photooxidation of NSD were studied under naturalistic conditions. METHODS The visible-light absorber riboflavin (vitamin B2) was employed as a photosensitizer. The vitamin can usually be found in natural waters and is the most common endogenous photosensitizer in mammals. The interaction of NSD with electronically excited states of Rf and with photogenerated reactive oxygen species (ROS) was evaluated through conventional UV spectroscopy, laser flash photolysis, time-resolved phosphorescence detection of singlet molecular oxygen (O2((1)Δg)), and polarographic dosage of dissolved oxygen. RESULTS Ground state NSD quenched the long-lived triplet excited state of Rf ((3)Rf*) and the photogenerated ROS (O2((1)Δg)) and superoxide radical anion (O2•−). As a result, NSD was photooxidized. The rate constants for the interaction NSD-O2((1)Δg) are particularly low, in the order of 10(6)/M/s, although the whole interaction is attributable to a pure reactive process. The O2((1)Δg) quenching was faster in alkaline medium, favored by the ionization of the NSD phenolic group. Under Rf-photosensitization, NSD was degraded very much more rapidly than phenol, the latter being considered a paradigmatic water-contaminant model compound. NSD may behave as an antioxidant in bio-environments, as demonstrated employing the photooxidizable amino acid tryptophan as a relevant biological target. DISCUSSION The results indicate that a O2•−-mediated process is the main route for the Rf-sensitized photooxidation of NSD. Photodegradation of the biocide in the presence and absence of phenol and tryptophan was quantitatively evaluated, discussed, and interpreted in terms of competitive quenching processes of (3)Rf*, O2((1)Δg), and O2•− by the substrates.

Abstract
Trace amounts of the widely used β-lactam antibiotics (Atbs) in waste water may cause adverse effects on the ecosystems and contribute to the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. On these grounds, kinetic and mechanistic aspects of photosensitized degradation of Ceftriaxone (Cft) and Cefotaxime (Ctx), have been studied in pure water by stationary and time-resolved techniques. Additionally, possible implications of these photoprocesses on the antimicrobial activity of the Atbs have also been investigated. Photoirradiation of aqueous solutions of Cft and Ctx produces the degradation of both Atbs in the presence of Riboflavin (vitamin B2), a well known pigment dissolved in natural aquatic systems. The process occurs through Type I and Type II mechanisms, with effective prevalence of the former. The participation of O2(-), OH and O2((1)Δg) is supported by experiments of oxygen consumption carried out in the presence of specific scavengers for such reactive oxygen species. Microbiological assays exhibit a parallelism between the rate of Cft and Ctx photodegradation and the loss of their bactericidal capacity on Staphylococcus aureus strains. Results contribute to both understanding kinetic and mechanism aspects of the degradation and predicting on natural decay of Atbs waste water-contaminants.

Abstract
This paper gives an overview of the main reactive transient species that are produced in surface waters by sunlight illumination of photoactive molecules (photosensitizers), such as nitrate, nitrite, and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). The main transients (˙OH, CO3(-˙) , (1)O2, and CDOM triplet states) are involved in the indirect phototransformation of a very wide range of persistent organic pollutants in surface waters.

Abstract
Some organic contaminants dissolved in natural waters tend to adsorb on suspended particles and sediments. In order to mimic the photodegradation routes in natural waters of bromoxynil (BXN) adsorbed on silica, we here prepare and characterize silica nanoparticles modified with BXN (NP-BXN). We measure the direct photolysis quantum yield of aqueous BXN at 307 nm (0.064 ± 0.001) and detect the formation of bromide ions as a reaction product. Under similar conditions the photolysis quantum yield of BXN bonded to NP-BXN is much lower (0.0021 ± 0.0004) and does not lead to formation of bromide ions. The rate constant of the reaction of NP-BXN with the excited triplet states of riboflavin, a molecule employed as a proxy of chromophore dissolved organic matter (DOM) was measured in laser flash-photolysis experiments. The rate constants for the overall (kt) and chemical interaction (kr) of singlet oxygen with NP-BXN were also measured. Kinetic computer simulations show that the relevance of the direct and indirect (through reactions with reactive species generated in photoinduced processes) photodegradation routes of BXN is very much affected by sorption on silica. Immobilization of the herbicide on the particles, on one hand, affects the photolysis mechanism and lowers its photolysis quantum yield. On the other hand, the results obtained in aqueous suspensions indicate that immobilization also lowers the rate of collisional encounter, which affects the quenching rate constants of excited triplet states and singlet oxygen with the herbicide.

Abstract
The production of dichlorophen (2,2'-methylenebis(4-chlorophenol), DCP) and its use as an anthelmintic and in pesticide products result in its direct release to the environment. To the purpose of modelling the possible photodegradation routes of DCP sorbed on sediments or suspended particles, the synthesis and characterization of silica nanoparticles modified with DCP (NP-DCP) is reported. The reactivity of NP-DCP with the excited states of riboflavin, a sensitizer usually present in natural waters, and with singlet oxygen were investigated. Comparison of the kinetic results obtained here to those previously reported for irradiated aqueous solutions of DCP allowed the discussion of the effect of adsorption of the pesticide on its photodegradation. We show with the aid of computer simulations that in natural waters the relevance of the different photodegradation routes dichlorophen is very much affected by attachment to sediments.

Abstract
Previous research has demonstrated that 3-[5-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,3-dimethyl-3-isoxazolidinyl]pyridine (SYP-Z048), a newly developed nitrogen heterocycle substituted isoxazolidine compound, has good protective and curative activities against a wide range of fungal diseases of fruits and vegetables caused by Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, and Deuteromycetes. In this study, the photochemical behavior of SYP-Z048 was investigated in aqueous solution and in response to solar and low-pressure mercury ultraviolet (UV) lamp irradiation. SYP-Z048 photolysis was pH- and temperature-dependent and was described by a first-order degradation reaction. A total of 11 photoproducts were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) and were identified on the basis of (1)H and (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) spectra. The photoproduct structures and kinetics suggested that the phototransformation of SYP-Z048 occurred via multiple reaction pathways that included the cleavage of the N-O bond in the isoxazolidine ring and the dechlorination of the benzene ring.

Abstract
This study evaluates the potential application of tin porphyrin- and C(60) aminofullerene-derivatized silica (SnP/silica and aminoC(60)/silica) as (1)O(2) generating systems for photochemical degradation of organic pollutants. Photosensitized (1)O(2) production with SnP/silica, which was faster than with aminoC(60)/silica, effectively oxidized a variety of pharmaceuticals. Significant degradation of pharmaceuticals in the presence of the 400-nm UV cutoff filter corroborated visible light activation of both photosensitizers. Whereas the efficacy of aminoC(60)/silica for (1)O(2) production drastically decreased under irradiation with λ > 550 nm, Q-band absorption caused negligible loss of the photosensitizing activity of SnP/silica in the long wavelength region. Faster destruction of phenolates by SnP/silica and aminoC(60)/silica under alkaline pH conditions further implicated (1)O(2) involvement in the oxidative degradation. Direct charge transfer mediated by SnP, which was inferred from nanosecond laser flash photolysis, induced significant degradation of neutral phenols under high power light irradiation. Self-sensitized destruction caused gradual activity loss of SnP/silica in reuse tests unlike aminoC(60)/silica. The kinetic comparison of SnP/silica and TiO(2) photocatalyst in real wastewater effluents showed that photosensitized singlet oxygenation of pharmaceuticals was still efficiently achieved in the presence of background organic matters, while significant interference was observed for photocatalyzed oxidation involving non-selective OH radical.

Abstract
The excited triplet state of 1-nitronaphthalene ((3)1NN*) reacts with OH(-) with a second-order reaction rate constant of (1.66 ± 0.08)×10(7) M(-1) s(-1) (μ±σ). The reaction yields the ˙OH radical and the radical anion 1NN(-)˙. In aerated solution, the radical 1NN(-)˙ would react with O(2) to finally produce H(2)O(2) upon hydroperoxide/superoxide disproportionation. The photolysis of H(2)O(2) is another potential source of ˙OH, but such a pathway would be a minor one in circumneutral (pH 6.5) or in basic solution ([OH(-)] = 0.3-0.5 M). The oxidation of H(2)O by (3)1NN*, with rate constant 3.8 ± 0.3 M(-1) s(-1), could be the main ˙OH source at pH 6.5.
