Kaolinite-mediated synthesis of ultra-small silver nanoparticles with high antimicrobial activity

Ultra-small Ag nanoparticles (<5 nm) loaded on a kaolinite surface were successfully prepared in large batches by a dry-process, displaying excellent broad-spectrum antimicrobial ability and size-dependent activity. This Ag-loaded kaolinite (Ag@AT/K) inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria and accelerated wound healing in in vivo experiments on MRSA-infected wounds. This work provides a new strategy for the preparation of mineral-based nanoscale antibacterial materials.

Mechanically stirred enzymatic membrane reactor containing HRP immobilized on Tau-SiO2@Fe3O4-GO nanocomposite for removal of tetracycline in synthetically concocted wastewater

The process of mechanically stirred membrane reactor containing the suspension of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) immobilized on synthesized nanocomposite (Tau-SiO2@Fe3O4-GO) was designed for continuous degradation of tetracycline. The immobilized HRP was characterized in terms of kinetic parameters and catalytic activities as these parameters were improved highly through immobilization. The stability indices including pH and temperature were investigated in parallel. The immobilized HRP was more tolerable to pH changes as compared to free HRP and the optimum temperature obtained at 40 °C. The reusability of HRP was promoted by immobilization as far as 70% of initial activity after ten cycles. The enzymatic degradation of optimum concentration of tetracycline was carried out in batch condition and 100% of tetracycline removed after 30 min. The results also showed that higher concentration of H2O2 exhibited more oxidation of tetracycline. The optimal ratio of HRP/H2O2 was also obtained at 0.005. The simultaneous process including separation and the biocatalytic degradation established in the membrane stirrer reactor concluded that no amount of tetracycline was observed in the permeate stream coming from the membrane after 30 min of operation.

Recent developments in synthesis of attapulgite composite materials for refractory organic wastewater treatment: a review

Attapulgite clay, due to its unique crystalline hydrated magnesium-aluminium silicate composition and layer-chain structure, possesses exceptional adsorption and catalytic properties, which enable it or its composites to be utilized as adsorbents and catalysts for wastewater treatment. But the drawbacks of attapulgite are also very obvious, such as relatively low specific surface area (compared to traditional adsorbents such as activated carbon and activated alumina), easy aggregation, and difficulty in dispersion. In order to fully utilize and improve the performance of attapulgite, researchers have conducted extensive research on its modification, but few specialized works have comprehensively evaluated the synthesis, applications and challenges for attapulgite-based composite materials in refractory organic wastewater treatments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of controllable preparation strategies, characterization methods and mechanisms of attapulgite-based composite materials, as well as the research progress of these materials in refractory organic wastewater treatment. Based on this review, constructive recommendations, such as deep mechanism analysis from molecular level multi-functional attapulgite-based material developments, and using biodegradable materials in attapulgite-based composites, were proposed.

Investigation on the Mechanism of PAL (100) Surface Modified by APTES

The interfacial mechanism has always been a concern for 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-grafted palygorskite (PAL). In this research, the mechanism of graft modification for grafting of APTES to the surface of PAL (100) was studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The results illustrated that different grafting states of the APTES influence the inter- and intramolecular interactions between APTES/PAL (100), which are reflected in the electronic structures. For single-, double-, and three-toothed state APTES-PAL (100), the charge transfer rates from the PAL (100) surface to APTES were 0.68, 1.02, and 0.77 e, respectively. The binding energy results show that PAL (100) modification performance in the double-tooth state is the best compared to the other states, with the lowest value of -181.91 kJ/mol. The double-toothed state has lower barrier energy (94.69, 63.11, and 153.67 kJ/mol) during the modification process. This study offers theoretical insights into the chemical modification of the PAL (100) surface using APTES coupling agents, and can provide a guide for practical applications.

Synthesis of Castor Oil-Based Quaternary Ammonium Salt and Modification of Attapulgite for Treating Industrial Wastewaters

In order to develop multifunctional quaternary ammonium salts and explore their advantages as modifiers for wastewater treatment, castor oil-based quaternary ammonium salts were synthesised and subsequently used as modifiers for attapulgite treatment. The structures of untreated and treated attapulgite were compared by Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction. The mechanism of modification was speculated. Various factors such as the amount of modified attapulgite, temperature and pH were also investigated in the batch experiments on the removal rates of acetone and phenol from wastewaters. The synthesis conditions were set as follows: the reaction temperature was 80 °C, the reaction time was 8 h, the molar ratio of castor oil to N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine was 1:5, the catalyst was 6% NaOH and the product yield was about 64.72%. The grafting rate of the castor oil-based quaternary ammonium salt was about 99.6% when the amount of modifier was 0.69 g per 5 g of attapulgite, the ultrasound treatment time was 11 min and the pH was 5. The quaternary ammonium salt was only associated with the surface of attapulgite and did not change the rod-like crystal structure of the silicate. The modified attapulgite is much more fibrous and exhibits a good distribution of crystal bundles. The removal rates were found to be less favourable under strongly acidic and strongly alkaline conditions. Under suitable conditions, for 50 mL industrial wastewaters (phenol: 100-160 mg/L; acetone: 680-800 mg/L), the amount of modified attapulgite was 1 g, the temperature was 80 °C and the pH was 7, and the maximum removal rates of acetone and phenol after 80 min reached about 65.71% and 78.72%, respectively, which were higher than those of ATP.

Preparation of Breadfruit Leaf Biochar for the Application of Congo Red Dye Removal from Aqueous Solution and Optimization of Factors by RSM-BBD

In this work, biochar produced from breadfruit leaves was utilized to remove the toxic Congo red dye. XRD, FTIR, and FESEM-EDX were implemented to characterize the biochar. Response surface methodology (RSM) and the Box-Behnken design (BBD) techniques were used to evaluate Congo red’s optimum adsorption efficiency. The adsorption of Congo red was studied by varying dye concentrations (5–50 mg/L), times (30–240 min), pH (6–9), and dosages (0.5–2 g/100 mL). X-ray diffractometer results show that the structure of biochar is amorphous. The biochar exhibited unbounded OH, aliphatic CH group, and C=O stretch, as shown by the band peaks at 3340 cm−1, 2924 cm−1, and 1625 cm−1 intensities. RSM-BBD design results showed maximum removal efficiency of 99.96% for Congo red at pH 6.37, dye concentration 45 mg/L, time 105 min, and dosage 1.92 g, respectively. The adsorption of Congo red by biochar was successfully modeled using the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model. The biochar produced from breadfruit leaves exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 17.81 mg/g for Congo red adsorption. It suggests that the adsorption is both homogenous monolayer and physicochemical.

Adsorption of Orange G in Liquid Solution by the Amino Functionalized GO

Dye effluent damaged the water environment and human health with its massive discharge. In order to eliminate dye from the water environment, a variety of adsorbents were used to investigate dye removal. Graphene oxide (GO) attracted extensive attention due to its excellent surface property in the degradation of dye wastewater. Modified GO with multifunctional groups helped to improve adsorption performance. 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane modified GO (AS-GO) was fabricated for the removal of Orange G (OG) in this study. The results showed that AS-GO had an excellent adsorption ability of OG. During the reaction process, the maximum adsorptive capacity of OG was up to 576.6 mg/g at T = 313 K and pH = 3 with the initial OG concentration of 100 mg/L and the initial adsorbent dose of 2.5 g/L. The adsorption kinetic process of AS-GO conformed to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. The spontaneous and endothermic adsorption of OG occurred in the adsorption process. The main adsorption mechanisms were electrostatic, π–π and hydrogen bonding interactions in the reaction process. After four cycles of AS-GO, it maintained high removal efficiency owing to its remarkable stability. The scheme of GO modified with AS could hinder the agglomeration of GO and provide more active sites, which would further enhance the adsorption properties and expand its application in water purification.

In-Situ Anchoring Pb-Free Cs3 Bi2 Br9 @BiOBr Quantum Dots on NHx -Rich Silica with Enhanced Blue Emission and Satisfactory Stability for Photocatalytic Toluene Oxidation

All-inorganic metal halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have attracted attention from researchers with their fascinating optoelectronic properties. However, blue-emitting perovskite QDs typically have low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). For potential commercial applications, it is preferable to replace Pb with an element having low toxicity. Here, Pb-free Cs₃ Bi₂ Br₉ @BiOBr perovskite QDs were anchored on the surface of NH_x -rich monodisperse silica (A-SiO₂ ) via N-Bi chemical bonding to isolate QDs from each other, thus enhancing efficient surface passivation and suppressing optical decay. Compared to unanchored QDs, Cs₃ Bi₂ Br₉ @BiOBr QDs/A-SiO₂ composites exhibited significantly enhanced blue emission performance, the PLQY of which increased from 16.62 % to 77.26 %, in addition to good water and environmental stability. Finally, the novel composites as photocatalysts were used to drive the oxidation of toluene, a template reaction of C(sp³ )-H bond activation and demonstrated astonishing conversion rates (4317 μmol g^-1  h^-1 ) with high selectivity (around 87 %).

Comparison of Adsorption Capacity and Removal Efficiency of Strontium by Six Typical Adsorption Materials

The rapid development and application of nuclear technology have been accompanied by the production of large amounts of radioactive wastes, of which Sr is a typical nuclide. In this study, six typical materials with strong adsorption properties, namely activated carbon, kaolin, montmorillonite, bentonite, zeolite, and attapulgite, were selected. Their adsorption mechanisms were investigated by analyzing their adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, micromorphologies, element contents, specific surface areas, crystal structures, and functional groups. The results showed that the adsorption efficiency of Sr by the six adsorbents can be ranked as zeolite, bentonite, attapulgite, montmorillonite, activated carbon, and kaolin, among which the maximum adsorption capacity of zeolite was 4.07 mg/g. Based on the adsorption kinetic and thermodynamic fitting results, the adsorption of Sr by zeolites, bentonite and attapulgite is consistent with Langmuir model, the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption process of Sr (II) by montmorillonite, activated carbon and kaolinite is consistent with the Freundlich model and corresponds to non-uniform adsorption. The main mechanisms of the six materials are physical adsorption, ion exchange and complexation. In summary, zeolite, bentonite, and attapulgite, especially zeolite, are highly effective for the treatment of radioactive wastewater containing strontium and have great application value in the treatment of radioactive wastes.

Fabrication of attapulgite-based dual responsive composite hydrogel and its efficient adsorption for methyl violet

In this work, attapulgite (ATP)-based dual sensitive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) composite hydrogel, P(NIPAM-co-AA)/ATP, was prepared by free radical polymerization. The prepared composite hydrogel was characterized via methods of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), zeta potential analysis and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) etc. The composite hydrogel showed pH and temperature sensitive behaviour, with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 35°C and highest swelling occurred at pH 8.0. The adsorption of methyl violet (MV) can be controlled by the hydrogel responsiveness, and 95.78% of MV can be removed at pH 8.0 and 35°C. The addition of a small amount of ATP (3 Wt%) can improve the swelling ratio and adsorption capacity. Kinetic analysis demonstrated that the experimental data were best fitted to the pseudo-second order model. Isotherm analysis showed that the equilibrium data followed Langmuir model with the adsorption capacity of 168.35 mg g^-1. In addition, the composite hydrogel has high adsorption selectivity for cationic dyes, and MV-loaded hydrogel is easy to regenerate, which can be used for successive adsorption cycles. These results demonstrate that the composite hydrogel has potential application in dye wastewater treatment.

Advances in Amine-Surface Functionalization of Inorganic Adsorbents for Water Treatment and Antimicrobial Activities: A Review

In the last decade, adsorption has exhibited promising and effective outcomes as a treatment technique for wastewater contaminated with many types of pollutants such as heavy metals, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and bacteria. To achieve such effectiveness, a number of potential adsorbents have been synthesized and applied for water remediation and antimicrobial activities. Among these inorganic adsorbents (INAD), activated carbon, silica, metal oxide, metal nanoparticles, metal–organic fibers, and graphene oxide have been evaluated. In recent years, significant efforts have been made in the development of highly efficient adsorbent materials for gas and liquid phases. For gas capture and water decontamination, the most popular and known functionalization strategy is the chemical grafting of amine, due to its low cost, ecofriendliness, and effectiveness. In this context, various amines such as 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), diethanolamine (DEA), dendrimer-based polyamidoamine (PAMAM), branched polyethyleneimine (PEI), and others are employed for the surface modification of INADs to constitute a large panel of resource and low-cost materials usable as an alternative to conventional treatments aimed at removing organic and inorganic pollutants and pathogenic bacteria. Amine-grafted INAD has long been considered as a promising approach for the adsorption of both inorganic and organic pollutants. The goal of this review is to provide an overview of surface modifications through amine grafting and their adsorption behavior under diverse conditions. Amine grafting strategies are investigated in terms of the effects of the solvent, temperature, and the concentration precursor. The literature survey presented in this work provides evidence of the significant potential of amine-grafted INAD to remove not only various contaminants separately from polluted water, but also to remove pollutant mixtures and bacteria.

Grafting of (3-Chloropropyl)-Trimethoxy Silane on Halloysite Nanotubes Surface

Modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs-Cl) were synthesized by a coupling reaction with (3-chloropropyl) trimethoxysilane (CPTMS). The incorporation of chloro-silane onto HNTs surface creates HNTs-Cl, which has great chemical activity and is considered a good candidate as an active site that reacts with other active molecules in order to create new materials with great applications in chemical engineering and nanotechnology. The value of this work lies in the fact that improving the degree of grafting of chloro-silane onto the HNT’s surface has been accomplished by incorporation of HNTs with CPTMS under different experimental conditions. Many parameters, such as the dispersing media, the molar ratio of HNTs/CPTMS/H2O, refluxing time, and the type of catalyst were studied. The greatest degree of grafting was accomplished by using toluene as a medium for the grafting process, with a molar ratio of HNTs/CPTMS/H2O of 1:1:3, and a refluxing time of 4 h. The addition of 7.169 mmol of triethylamine (Et3N) and 25.97 mmol of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) led to an increase in the degree of grafting of CPTMS onto the HNT’s surface.

Selective adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ on amino-modified attapulgite: Kinetic, thermal dynamic and DFT studies

Amino-modified attapulgite (M-ATP) was prepared to remove Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ from the aqueous solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectrums and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that a new Si-O-Si bond formed after modification. The result indicates that the graft reaction of ATP occurred at Si-O (2 0 0) tetrahedron crystal face. No matter whether in a single or binary heavy metal ion system, the adsorption experiments displayed that the equilibrium adsorption capacity of M-ATP towards Pb²⁺ was much higher than Cu²⁺, which indicated M-ATP more readily adsorbs the Pb²⁺. The selective adsorption mechanism of Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ on modified attapulgite was studied by density functional theory (DFT). The E_ads of Pb (- 2.01 eV) adsorbed on M-ATP is lower than Cu (- 1.79 eV) through the DFT calculation of adsorption energy (E_ads), which indicate that the Pb²⁺ adsorbed on M-ATP is more stable than Cu²⁺. Both adsorption experiments and theoretical calculations revealed that due to the stability of Pb²⁺ adsorption on M-ATP, Pb²⁺ is more readily adsorbed by M-ATP, and it is difficult for Cu²⁺ to exchange Pb²⁺ from M-ATP.

Surface Modification of Attapulgite by Grafting Cationic Polymers for Treating Dye Wastewaters

In this study, the cationic polymer poly-epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine was immobilized on natural attapulgite to improve the dye adsorption capacities. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, zeta potential analysis, and particle size analysis were used to determine the characteristics of modified attapulgite. Results showed that the poly-epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine had been successfully grafted onto the surface of attapulgite without altering its crystal structure. After cationic modification, the specific surface area of attapulgite obviously decreased, and its surface zeta potentials possessed positive values in the pH range from 3 to 11. The cation-modified attapulgite displayed high adsorption capacities for anionic dyes, and its maximum adsorption capacities were 237.4 mg/g for Reactive Black 5 and 228.3 mg/g for Reactive Red 239; this is corroborated by Langmuir’s isotherm studies. It was demonstrated that the two reactive dyes could be 100% removed from effluents when cation-modified attapulgite was used in column operation modes. Its treatment capacities were more than three times larger than that of activated carbon. The regeneration study verified better utilization and stability of the fabricated adsorbent in column operation. This work has conclusively confirmed the potential of the new modified attapulgite for effectively treating dye wastewaters.

A new sensor based on an amino-montmorillonite-modified inkjet-printed graphene electrode for the voltammetric determination of gentisic acid

An amperometric sensor based on an inkjet-printed graphene electrode (IPGE) modified with amine-functionalized montmorillonite (Mt-NH₂) for the electroanalysis and quantification of gentisic acid (GA) has been developed. The organoclay used as IPGE modifier was prepared and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, CHN elemental analysis, and thermogravimetry. The electrochemical features of the Mt-NH₂/IPGE sensor were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sensor exhibited charge selectivity ability which was exploited for the electrochemical oxidation of GA. The GA amperometric response was high in acidic medium (Brinton-Robinson buffer, pH 2) due to favorable interactions between the protonated amine groups and the negatively charged GA. Kinetic studies were also performed by cyclic voltammetry, and the obtained electron transfer rate constant of 11.3 s^-1 indicated a fast direct electron transfer rate of GA to the electrode. An approach using differential pulse voltammetry was then developed for the determination of GA (at + 0.233 V vs. a pseudo Ag/Ag⁺ reference electrode), and under optimized conditions, the sensor showed high sensitivity, a wide working linear range from 1 to 21 μM (R² = 0.999), and a low detection limit of 0.33 μM (0.051 ± 0.01 mg L^-1). The proposed sensor was applied to quantify GA in a commercial red wine sample. The simple and rapid method developed using a cheap clay material could be employed for the determination of various phenolic acids.

Effect of Silane Functionalization on Properties of Poly(Lactic Acid)/Palygorskite Nanocomposites

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/palygorskite (Paly) nanocomposites were prepared using the melt compounding technique. Paly modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) was used as nanofiller for PLA with concentrations in the 1–7 wt% range. It has been found that the functionalization allows a covalent bond between the hydroxyl groups of the Paly and the PLA matrix, evidenced by the improvement in mechanical properties. Paly modification with VTMS has better properties compared with Pale modification with APTES. This indicates a better adhesion between the Paly-VTMS and PLA matrix, and a good dispersion of the nanofiller in the polymer matrix.

Designing clay-polymer nanocomposite sorbents for water treatment: A review and meta-analysis of the past decade

Clay-polymer nanocomposites (CPNs) have been studied for two decades as sorbents for water pollutants, but their applicability remains limited. Our aim in this review is to present the latest progress in CPN research using a meta-analysis approach and identify key steps necessary to bridge the gap between basic research and CPN application. Based on results extracted from 99 research articles on CPNs and 8 review articles on other widely studies sorbents, CPNs had higher adsorption capacities for several inorganic and organic pollutant classes (including heavy metals, oxyanions, and dyes, n = 308 observations). We applied principal component analysis, analysis of variance, and multiple linear regressions to test how CPN and pollutant properties correlated with Langmuir adsorption model coefficients. While adsorption was, surprisingly, not influenced by mineral properties, it was influenced by CPN fabrication method, polymer functional groups, and pollutant properties. For example, among the pollutant classes, heavy metals had the highest adsorption capacity but the lowest adsorption affinity. On the other hand, dyes had high adsorption affinities, as reflected by the linear correlation between adsorption affinity and pollutant molecular weight. Scaling from 'basic research' to 'technological application' requires testing CPN performance in real water, application in columns, comparison to commercial sorbents, regeneration, and cost evaluation. However, our survey indicates that of the 158 observations, only 20 compared the CPN's performance to that of a commercial sorbent. We anticipate that this review will promote the design of smart and functional CPNs, which can then evolve into an effective water treatment technology.

Biodegradation of phenol and dyes with horseradish peroxidase covalently immobilized on functionalized RGO-SiO2 nanocomposite

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was immobilized onto a functionalized reduced graphene oxide-SiO₂ through the covalent bonding process. By using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), the formed nanocomposites were characterized. The kinetic parameters including the catalytic constant, k_cat, and the catalytic efficiency, k_cat/K_m, increased 5.5 and 6 times, respectively, after immobilization. The circular dichroism analysis demonstrated that the α-helical content increased from 39% to 46% after immobilization. The immobilization improved the reusability of HRP as 70% of initial activity retained after 10 cycles. Due to the buffering effect, the immobilized HRP was less sensitive to pH changes as compared to the free HRP. At temperature 40 °C and during 90 min, the immobilized HRP retained 90% of the initial activity while 70% of initial activity remained for the free HRP. After 35-day storage, no reduction in the activity was observed for the immobilized HRP. The removal efficiency for phenol concentration (2500 mg/L) obtained 100% and 50% for the immobilized and free HRP, respectively. The results showed that the immobilized HRP promoted the dyes decolorization from 2-fold until 26-fold as compared to the free HRP. The decolorization efficiencies reached 100% for most dyes in the case of immobilized HRP.

Adsorption properties and mechanism of sepiolite modified by anionic and cationic surfactants on oxytetracycline from aqueous solutions

In this study, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) (cationic) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) (anionic) were used to modify natural sepiolite (SEP) to obtain a type of organic sepiolite (C-S-SEP). It was further applied for adsorption of oxytetracycline (OTC), a common antibiotic in water. The changes of SEP crystal structure and physicochemical properties before and after modification were analyzed by the means of XRD, FTIR, TG, SEM/EDS, BET, XPS and zeta potential. The adsorption performance and mechanism of OTC on C-S-SEP were studied by static adsorption method. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of C-S-SEP increased significantly, and the removal rate of OTC increased from 50.26% to 99.42%. The partition coefficient of SEP and C-S-SEP was 0.356 and 2.172 mg g^-1 μM^-1, respectively. CTAB and SDBS were successfully loaded onto the surface of SEP without entering its interlaminar domain, and the original crystal structure of SEP was well maintained. In the range of the studied ratio, anionic and cationic surfactants had the synergistic solubilization effect. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. The adsorption reaction was exothermic and a process of entropy reduction. The increase of temperature was not conducive to adsorption, and the adsorption reaction was basically unaffected by the pH value. The adsorption of C-S-SEP on OTC was the result of the combination of distribution and surface adsorption. The organic modified SEP was expected to become a low-cost environmentally friendly adsorption material that can effectively remove OTC from water.

Mesoporous silicate/carbon composites derived from dye-loaded palygorskite clay waste for efficient removal of organic contaminants

Palygorskite (Pal) is a natural abundant environment-friendly adsorbent that has shown high efficiency to decontaminate dye in water. However, the dye removal results in transformation of Pal to a very stable Maya Blue-like structure or waste Pal clay (WPal), which could not be easily regenerated by a commonly used desorption process. This paper presents a use of WPal as the precursor material to synthesize a highly-efficient mesoporous silicate/carbon composite adsorbent. The composite adsorbent has a large specific surface area (427.9 m²·g^-1), a high negative potential (-40.6 mV) and a mesoporous size (3.48 nm). This adsorbent shows almost complete removal of tetracycline (TC), crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) (initial concentration, 200 mg·L^-1) with the optimal adsorption capacities of 319.8 mg·g^-1, 244.4 mg·g^-1 and 281.7 mg·g^-1, respectively. The active -Si-O^- adsorption sites produced by the breaking of inert Si-O-Si (or M) bonds and the electrostatic interactions of negatively charged adsorbents to adsorbates play a major role in the adsorption process. Adsorption capacities of the developed composite are significantly higher than that of Pal, WPal and hydrothermally treated WPal (HWPal). Results demonstrate that the composite adsorbents have high potential in decontamination of organics in water efficiently.

The preparation of bifunctional electrospun air filtration membranes by introducing attapulgite for the efficient capturing of ultrafine PMs and hazardous heavy metal ions

The comprehensive sources of particulate matter (PM) require air purification materials to possess both high filtration efficiencies and low air resistances in an effort to provide healthcare. However, the assembly of multiple-layered filters with different functions leads to high pressure drop and high operating cost. Therefore, a multifunctional air filter that can provide excellent air filtration capacity and healthcare is highly desired. Here, a novel bifunctional polyacrylonitrile/attapulgite hierarchical-structured filter with low air resistance and high adsorption capacity was designed and fabricated by embedding attapulgite nanorods during a facile electrospinning process. The hierarchical polyacrylonitrile/attapulgite membranes showed only a ∼64 Pa resistance for 0.1 μm PM. Another benefit of using the attapulgite nanorods is an adsorption effect for hazardous heavy metal ions that accompany airborne ultrafine PMs. Thereby this hierarchical membrane simultaneously exhibits an enhanced filtration performance and hazardous protection ability. Furthermore, due to the electret effect of the attapulgite nanorods, the surface potential of the membrane remains at above 2.2 kV after 600 min of continuous use, which could improve the air filtration efficiency and ensure the long-term service life of the filters. This work may provide a new approach for the design and development of multifunctional air filters for simultaneously capturing ultrafine PMs and any other accompanying hazardous chemicals.

Capillary zone electrophoresis-tandem mass spectrometry for top-down proteomics using attapulgite nanoparticles functionalized separation capillaries

Attapulgite nanoparticles have good chemical properties and can be modified easily for broad applications. In this work, for the first time, attapulgite nanoparticles were employed to modify the inner wall of separation capillaries for capillary zone electrophoresis-tandem mass spectrometry (CZE-MS/MS)-based top-down proteomics. The attapulgite nanoparticles and the inner wall of a fused silica capillary were first functionalized with γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane. Then the modified nanoparticles and acrylamide were copolymerized in the fused silica capillary with the assistance of azobisisobutyronitrile and heat. The incorporation of high-surface-area nanoparticles in the linear polyacrylamide (LPA) coating resulted in significantly lower electroosmotic mobility compared with the typical LPA coating (3.48 × 10^-5 vs. 9.03 × 10^-5 cm² V^-1 S^-1), most likely because more LPA molecules were immobilized on the inner wall of the separation capillary. The attapulgite nanoparticles functionalized separation capillaries have shown great stability and reproducibility across 43 discontinuous CZE-MS runs of a standard protein mixture. We applied the CZE-MS/MS system for top-down proteomics of Escherichia coli cells. In a proof-of-principle experiment, the CZE-MS/MS system achieved a 90-min separation window and a 1-μL sample loading volume, leading to nearly 300 proteoform and 135 protein identifications in a single run. Many post-translational modifications (PTMs) were identified, including methylation, acetylation, phosphorylation, biotinylation, succinylation, and disulfide bond.

Polyaniline/attapulgite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron for the rival removal of azo dyes in aqueous solution

In this paper, polyaniline/attapulgite (PANI/APT)-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) composites were synthesized by liquid-phase chemical reduction method and used for the removal of two kinds of dyes. The structure of as-prepared nZVI/PANI/APT was characterized by various test methods. The removal property and degradation mechanism for azo (alizarin yellow R, methyl red, chrome black T, methyl orange) and non-azo (methylene blue, rhodamine B) dyes in aqueous solution were investigated. The presence of PANI/APT can decrease the aggregation of nZVI particles with maintenance of reactivity and improving adsorption capacity for degradation azo dye. The experiment results showed that the removal property of the composite materials on azo dyes is obviously better than that on non-azo dyes. The varying removal efficiencies of dyes depend on the different degradation mechanisms. Azo dyes removal by nZVI/PANI/APT was mainly due to the reductive cleavage of the N = N of nZVI, while non-azo dyes removal mainly contributes to the adsorption of PANI/APT. The study demonstrated that nZVI/PANI/APT has potential applications for the removal of azo dyes from wastewaters.

Application of polyethyleneimine-modified attapulgite for the solid-phase extraction of chlorophenols at trace levels in environmental water samples

A polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified attapulgite was employed as a new adsorbent for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of chlorophenols (CPs) from environmental water samples. Key factors pivotal to extraction efficiency, such as organic additive, pH, salt, sample loading volume, elution volume, and sample loading flow rate, were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of CPs reached 38 mg/g, and the adsorption behavior could be described with the Langmuir isotherm model. The developed SPE procedure was then tested on river water samples. Of this cartridge, 0.4 g could be used to treat up to 100 mL of the water sample, with high recoveries achieved. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) and the limit of quantification (S/N = 10) were in range of 0.08-0.56 and 0.27-1.88 ng/mL, respectively. The mean recoveries of CPs spiked in river water samples ranged from 84.4 to 96.8% with relative standard deviations for the intra-day and inter-day less than 6.30%. The developed SPE method exhibited high sensitivity, high selectivity, excellent accuracy, and good repeatability to the analysis of trace CPs in complicated aqueous matrices. Selective Adsorption of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solution by Triethylenetetramine-Grafted Polyacrylamide/Vermiculite

Amine groups play significant roles in polymeric composites for heavy metals removal. However, generating a composite with a large number of functional and stable amine groups based on clay is still a challenge. In this work, a new amine-functionalized adsorbent based on acid-activated vermiculite (a-Verm) was prepared by organic modification of silane coupling agent as bridge, followed by in situ polymerization of acrylamide (AM) and further grafting of triethylene tetramine (TETA). The obtained polymeric composite g-PAM/OVerm was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermal analysis (TG/DTG), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analyses, confirming that amine groups were successfully grafted onto the surface of Verm. The efficacy g-PAM/OVerm for removing Pb(II) was tested. The adsorption equilibrium data on g-PAM/OVerm was in good accordance with the Langmuir adsorption isotherms, and the adsorption maximal value of Pb(II) was 219.4 mg·g⁻¹. The adsorption kinetic data fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. Additionally, g-PAM/OVerm has better selectivity for Pb(II) ion in comparison with Zn(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions. The present work shows that g-PAM/OVerm holds great potential for removing Pb(II) from wastewater, and provides a new and efficient method for the removal of heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater.

Preparation of a palygorskite supported KF/CaO catalyst and its application for biodiesel production via transesterification

This study aimed to explore base catalysts with high transesterification efficiencies to be used for heterogeneous biodiesel production. Palygorskite, a promising low-cost clay mineral, served as a support for KF/CaO to prepare a base catalyst. The base catalyst was prepared via a facile impregnation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and N₂ adsorption. Subsequently, the prepared catalyst was used for producing biodiesel via the transesterification of commercial soybean oil with methanol. The effects of the catalyst preparation conditions as well as the transesterification parameters, such as the loading amount of KF, calcination temperature, catalyst amount, methanol to oil molar ratio, reaction temperature and water content, on the biodiesel yield were investigated. Results showed that the metal oxide species dispersed on the surface of palygorskite, and the formed KCaF₃ was the main active component for the activity of the catalyst. A maximum biodiesel yield of 97.9% was obtained under the optimal conditions. The separated catalyst could be directly used in the next round of reactions and gave a satisfactory yield. The biodiesel yields decreased from 97.9% to 91.3% from the first to the tenth use of the catalyst particles.

Novel bioactive surface functionalization of bacterial cellulose membrane

Bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane is a promising biopolymer which can be used for tissue implants, wound healing, and drug delivery due to its unique properties, such as high crystallinity, high mechanical strength, ultrafine fiber network structure, good water holding capacity and biocompatibility. However, BC does not intrinsically present antibacterial properties. In the present study, functionalized BC membranes were prepared. FTIR, SEM and XPS were used to characterize the chemical composition and surface morphology. Static water contact angles were measured to investigate surface wettability. Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans were used to evaluate the antibacterial properties of membranes. HEK293 cell lines were applied to assess the biocompatibility of membrane surfaces by MTT assay and their morphologies were observed by Confocal Microscopy. Interestingly, the resultant functionalized BC membranes exhibiting excellent antibacterial property and good biocompatibility demonstrated great utility and potential as biomaterial materials.

An update on synthetic dyes adsorption onto clay based minerals: A state-of-art review

Dyes are growing to be a problematic class of pollutants to the environment. The disposal of dyes in water resources has bad aesthetic and health effects, hence the need to remove them from the environment. The need for treatment methods that are effective and low in price is rising hence a lot of research interest is being diverted towards adsorbents that are cheap, preferable naturally occurring materials like clays. In most reported dye adsorption studies, limited information on the relationship between characterization results with adsorbent performance on dye removal has been given. This review article seeks to report on the link between the adsorption characteristics of the clays and their adsorption capacities and to gather information on the modifications done on clays to improve their adsorption capacities. A critical analysis of the different mechanisms involved during the decolouration process and their application for dye removal has been discussed in detail in this up-to-date review. From a wide range of consulted literature review, it is evident that some clays have appreciable adsorption capacities on top of being widely available. It was also noted that several parameters like contact time, dosage, concentration, temperature and pH affect the removal of dyes. Furthermore, the application of clay minerals for decolourising water represents economic viable and locally available materials that can be used substantially for pollution control and management. Conclusions were also drawn and suggestions for future research perspectives are proposed.

Effective removal of hydrogen sulfide using 4A molecular sieve zeolite synthesized from attapulgite

In this work, 4A molecular sieve zeolite was synthesized from attapulgite (ATP) in different conditions and was applied initially for H₂S removal. The sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra and N₂ adsorption/desorption. The effects of the synthesis condition and adsorption temperature were studied by dynamic adsorption experiment. The optimal adsorption temperature is 50°C. The H₂S adsorption results have showed that the optimal synthesis conditions are as follows: the ratio of silicon to aluminum and ratio of sodium to silicon are both 1.5, the ratio of water to sodium is 30, crystallization temperature and crystallization time is 90°C, 4h, respectively. The breakthrough and saturation sulfur sorption capacities of zeolite synthesized under optimum conditions are up to nearly 10 and 15mg/g-sorbent, respectively, and the H₂S removal rate is nearly 100%. The adsorption kinetics nonlinear fitting results show that the adsorption system follows Bingham model. These results indicate that 4A molecular sieve zeolite synthesized from attapulgite can be used for H₂S removal promisingly.

Effect of Surface Modification of Palygorskite on the Properties of Polypropylene/Polypropylene-g-Maleic Anhydride/Palygorskite Nanocomposites

The effect of surface modification of palygorskite (Pal) on filler dispersion and on the mechanical and thermal properties of polypropylene (PP)/polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH)/palygorskite (Pal) nanocomposites was evaluated. A natural Pal mineral was purified and individually surface modified with hexadecyl tributyl phosphonium bromide and (3-Aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane; the pristine and modified Pals were melt-compounded with PP to produce nanocomposites using PP-g-MAH as compatibilizer. The grafting of Pal surface was verified by FT-IR and the change in surface hydrophilicity was estimated by the contact angle of sessile drops of ethylene glycol on Pal tablets. The extent of Pal dispersion and the degree of improvement in both the mechanical and thermal properties were related to the surface treatment of Pal. Modified Pals were better dispersed during melt processing and improved Young’s modulus and strength; however, maximum deformation tended to decrease. The thermal stability of PP/PP-g-MAH/Pal nanocomposites was considerably improved with the content of modified Pals. The degree of crystallinity increased with Pal content, regardless of the surface modification. Surfactant modified Pal exhibited better results in comparison with silane Pal; it is possible that longer alkyl chains from surfactant molecules promoted interactions with polymer chains, thereby improving nanofiller dispersion and enhancing the properties.

Removal of heavy metal Cu(II) in simulated aquaculture wastewater by modified palygorskite

Palygorskite (PAL) is a good heavy metal adsorbent due to its high surface area, low cost, and environmentally compatibility. But the natural PAL has limited its adsorption capacity and selectivity. In this study, a cost-effective and readily-generated absorbent, l-threonine-modified palygorskite (L-PAL), was used and its performance for Cu(II) removal in simulated aquaculture wastewater was evaluated. After preparation, L-PAL was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The impacts of pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial Cu(II) concentration on the adsorption capacity of L-PAL were examined. The Cu(II) adsorption capacity on L-PAL was enhanced almost 10 times than that of raw PAL. The adsorption isotherms of Cu(II) fit the Langmuir isotherms, and the adsorption kinetics was dominated by the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic parameters at four temperatures were calculated, which indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism involves complexation, chelation, electrostatic attraction, and micro-precipitation. Furthermore, L-PAL is shown to have a high regeneration capacity. These results indicate that L-PAL is a cheap and promising absorbent for Cu(II) removal and hold potential to be used for aquaculture wastewater treatment.

Using activated attapulgite as sorbent for solid-phase extraction of melamine in milk formula samples

In this study, a simple solid-phase extraction (SPE) approach by using activated attapulgite as sorbent was successfully developed for the determination of melamine in milk formula samples. Crucial factors impacting the extraction efficiency, including sample solvent, elution solvent, and sample loading volume, were investigated. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the sample loading volume was up to 200 mL and the adsorption capacity of the melamine gave rise to 1154 μg g(-1). Excellent linear calibration curves (r (2)  > 0.999) were achieved, and then the limit of detection (S/N = 3) and the limit of quantification (S/N = 10) were found to be 0.15 and 0.5 ng mL(-1), respectively. The recoveries of the melamine spiked in four milk formula samples at three concentration levels ranged from 83.5 to 111.0 % with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 10.2 %. Furthermore, RSDs of batch to batch (n = 4) of the acidified attapulgite used in this developed method were in the range of 2.3∼7.3 %. In comparison to the commercial Oasis MCX, the acidified attapulgite sorbent even outperformed (at least in terms of reproducibility) for melamine analysis in real food samples. Because of its simplicity, the newly developed SPE method based on acidified attapulgite nanoparticles should provide a promising tool for daily monitoring of doped melamine in milk formula or other complex matrices.
