Selective adsorption of Hg(II) by γ-radiation synthesized silica-graft-vinyl imidazole adsorbent

Fabrication of Brønsted acidic ionic liquids functionalized organosilica nanospheres for microwave-assisted fructose valorization

A series of Brønsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs) functionalized hollow organosilica nanospheres ([C_3/4Im][OTs/OTf]-Si(Et)Si, C_3/4 = Pr/BuSO₃H) were synthesized by two steps. The process involved the preparation of hollow nanosphere supports via a toluene-swollen sol-gel co-condensation of 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane and 3-chloropropyltriethoxysilane in the presence of F127, and followed by a successive quaternary ammonization and protonation with imidazole, 1,3-propane/1,4-butane sultone and trifluoromethane sulfonic acid/p-toluenesulfonic acid. The adjustable acid property, hollow inner diameter (5-15 nm) and shell thickness (5-9 nm) of [C_3/4Im][OTs/OTf]-Si(Et)Si are achieved by introducing different organic acids and controlling toluene concentration, respectively. The [C_3/4Im][OTs/OTf]-Si(Et)Si were applied in selective conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) under microwave heating. Under the optimized conditions, the [C₄Im][OTs]-Si(Et)Si3.0 nanospheres with the largest inner diameter and the smallest shell thickness exhibit the highest HMF yield (79.4%, 15 min) in fructose dehydration. And the [C₃Im][OTf]-Si(Et)Si0.5 nanospheres with the highest acid strength possess the highest EMF yield (70.4%, 30 min) in fructose ethanolysis. The high Brønsted acid-site density and acid strength of [C_3/4Im][OTs/OTf]-Si(Et)Si catalysts accompanied by high microwave heating energy lead to excellent dehydration/ethanolysis activity. The product selectivity strongly depended on the BAILs structures and morphological characteristics of the catalyst. More importantly, the [C_3/4Im][OTs/OTf]-Si(Et)Si can be reused three times without changes in leaching of BAILs, due to strong covalent bond between BAILs and silicon/carbon framework. This work will provide a simple strategy of chemically bonded BAILs on suitable supports as efficient solid acids, and an approach of combining morphology-controlled solid acids with microwave-heating for catalytic conversion of biomass/derivatives to fuels and value-added chemicals.

Recent progress in environmental applications of functional adsorbent prepared by radiation techniques: A review

Environmental pollution has been accelerated due to fast urbanization and industrialization, and thus hazardous contaminants removal and valuable metal recovery have become urgent. Adsorption has become a promising technology for water treatment because of its advantages of low-cost, good reusability, low energy consumption, high capacity and high selectivity. Particularly, radiation techniques including radiation induced graft copolymerization and radiation crosslinking have been found to be widely utilized to exploit adsorbents for water treatment. In this review, the current status and progress of adsorbents in environmental pollution in the past decade are summarized, including adsorbents (in form of particles, fiber and fabric, membrane, novel nanomaterials) synthesized by radiation induced graft copolymerization and hydrogel-based adsorbents fabricated by radiation crosslinking. Finally, further perspective on the development and challenge of adsorbents by radiation techniques is also suggested.

Progress in surface-modified silicas for Cr(VI) adsorption: A review

Various toxic chemicals are discharging to the environment due to rapid industrialization and polluting soil, water, and air causing numerous diseases including life-threatening cancer. Among these pollutants, Cr(VI) or hexavalent chromium is one of the most carcinogenic and toxic contaminants hostile to human health and other living things. Therefore, along with other contaminants, the removal of Cr(VI) efficiently is very crucial to keep our environment neat and clean. On the other hand, silica has a lot of room to modify its surfaces as it is available with various sizes, shapes, pore sizes, surface areas etc. and the surface silanol groups are susceptible to design and prepare adsorbents for Cr(VI). This review emphases on the progress in the development of different types of silica-based adsorbents by modifying the surfaces of silica and their application for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Toxicity of Cr(VI), different silica surface modification processes, and removal techniques are also highlighted. The adsorption capacities of the surface-modified silica materials with other parameters are discussed extensively to understand how to select the best condition, silica and modifiers to achieve optimum removal performance. The adsorption mechanisms of various adsorbents are also discussed. Finally, future prospects are summarized and some suggestions are given to enhance the adsorption capacities of the surface-modified silica materials.

Facile synthesis of sulfhydryl modified covalent organic frameworks for high efficient Hg(II) removal from water

In present study, we fabricated sulfhydryl modified covalent organic frameworks (COF-‒SH) through one-step reaction for the removal of Hg(II) from water. Different techniques were employed to characterize the fabricated COFs. We find that COF-‒SH exhibits great adsorption capacity (1283 mg/g) towards Hg(II), which is over 25 times higher than that of COF-1 without ‒-SH (53.1 mg/g). COF-SH has fast adsorption kinetics with the removal of 95% of 1000 μg/L Hg(II) within 30 min and over 99% after 2 h. Under a wide pH range (from 4 to 9), COF-‒SH exhibits high removal efficiencies (>99%). Moreover, COF-SH can selectively adsorb Hg(II) in the presence of other metal cations up to 1000 μg/L. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals the presence of high affinity between thiol-S atom and Hg(II), which is also responsible for the high selectivity towards Hg(II) compared with other cations. Because of the transfer from enol form to keto form during synthesis, COF-SH exhibit remarkable stability during 10-cycle regeneration and reuse test. During utilization in wastewater extracted from Hg contaminated sludge, COF-‒SH displays high Hg(II) removal efficiency (>95%) under multiple coexisting ions conditions. The results suggest that COF-‒SH have great potential for Hg(II) removal from water under complex conditions.

Quaternary phosphonium modified cellulose microsphere adsorbent for 99Tc decontamination with ultra-high selectivity

Decontamination of radioactive TcO₄^- from nuclear wastes is increasingly crucial for spent nuclear fuel reprocessing and environmental remediation. In the presence of a large excess of competitive anions, the selective separation of TcO₄^- is a major challenge for adsorbents. Herein, by using pre-radiation induced grafting polymerization, we have modified economical and environmentally friendly cellulose microspheres to obtain quaternary phosphonium decorated TcO₄^- adsorbents with an ultra-high selectivity, designated CMS-g-VBPPh₃NO₃. The prepared materials show adsorption capacities of 251 mg g^-1 (for the surrogate Re). The selective factor against NO₃^- in 0.5 mol kg^-1 HNO₃ is as high as 168, showing excellent anion-exchange selectivity towards TcO₄^-. Moreover, CMS-g-VBPPh₃NO₃ was packed in column for treating simulated acidic waste solutions containing Cs, Sr, Eu, Zr, Ru, U and Re, and it showed excellent Re separation performance. Tracer amount of ^99mTc experiments showed that comparing to ReO₄^-, CMS-g-VBPPh₃NO₃ has a better adsorption selectivity for TcO₄^-.

Selective and effective adsorption of Hg(II) from aqueous solution over wide pH range by thiol functionalized magnetic carbon nanotubes

In this study, a novel adsorbent thiol functionalized magnetic carbon nanotubes (CNTs-SH@Fe₃O₄) was synthesized to overcome somewhat existing difficulties during the Hg(II) adsorption process, including low efficiency and selectivity, narrow feasible pH range and difficult to separate and reuse. The Hg(II) adsorption performance of CNTs-SH@Fe₃O₄ was evaluated using batch experiment and its physiochemical properties were investigated by characterization techniques. The batch experiment results showed that the prepared CNTs-SH@Fe₃O₄ maintained high Hg(II) adsorption efficiency (>98%) over wide pH range from 3 to 11. The selective adsorption of Hg(II) by CNTs-SH@Fe₃O₄ was achieved with the coexistence of Cu(II), Mg(II) or Zn(II) ions, in which adsorbate matrix Hg(II) removal efficiency of 81.39%, 89.36% and 95.52% was obtained, respectively. CNTs-SH@Fe₃O₄ kept high Hg(II) removal efficiency (>80%) and good magnetic property (Ms value > 21 emg g^-1) after five cycles of adsorption/regeneration. The Hg(II) adsorption kinetics could be better described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Freundlich model showed higher correlation coefficient in adsorption isotherms study, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity was 172.4 mg g^-1. Thermodynamic study suggested that the adsorption process was exothermic in nature. Surface adsorption, complex adsorption and reduction adsorption were all contributed to the removal of Hg(II) using CNTs-SH@Fe₃O₄.

The Counterion Effect of Imidazolium-Type Poly(ionic liquid) Brushes on Carbon Dioxide Adsorption

Imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquid) brushes were attached to spherical silica nanoparticles bearing various functionalities by using a surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization ("grafting from" technique). A temperature-programmed desorption process was applied to evaluate and analyze the carbon dioxide adsorption performance of the synthesized polymer brushes. The confined structure of the surface-attached polymer chains facilitates gas transport and adsorption, leading to an enhanced adsorption capacity of carbon dioxide molecules compared with pure polymer powders. Temperature-programmed desorption profiles of the synthesized polymer brushes after carbon dioxide adsorption reveal that the substituent groups on the nitrogen atom at the 3-position of the imidazole ring, as well as the associated anions significantly affect the adsorption capacity of functionalized poly(ionic liquid) brushes. Of the tested samples, amine-functionalized poly(ionic liquid) brushes associated with hexafluorophosphate ions exhibit the highest carbon dioxide adsorption capacity of 2.56 mmol g^-1 (112.64 mg g^-1 ) at 25 °C under a carbon dioxide partial pressure of 0.2 bar.

Enhanced and selective adsorption of Hg2+ to a trace level using trithiocyanuric acid-functionalized corn bract

A novel trithiocyanuric acid-modified corn bract (TCA-CCB) was prepared, and its removal properties for Hg²⁺ were investigated. TCA-CCB showed a remarkable absorbability for Hg²⁺ in mixed ion solutions. Adsorption kinetics experiments indicated that the removal of Hg²⁺ on TCA-CCB was quick, with a removal rate of 99.07% within 5 min. In addition, the removal rate of Hg²⁺ exceeded 98% over all pH conditions. The adsorption process can be best described by pseudo-second-order kinetic and Hill isotherm models. The saturated adsorption capacity of TCA-CCB for Hg²⁺ was 390 mg/g. The TCA-CCB could efficiently adsorb Hg²⁺ from the simulated wastewater and reduce the Hg²⁺ concentration from 10 ppm to 12.35 ppb, which was lower than the greatest allowable value of 50 ppb and satisfied the emission standards required by the Chinese government. Moreover, the removal rate of Hg²⁺ was beyond 99% after three cycles. The results of the zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) implied that the chelation and ion exchange between amino/thiol groups and Hg²⁺ played a significant role in the improvement of the adsorption properties. The corn bract modified by trithiocyanuric acid exhibits apparent advantages in the removal of Hg²⁺ from ppm to ppb due to its high selectivity, adsorption capacity and stability.

Comparison with adsorption of Re (VII) by two different γ-radiation synthesized silica-grafting of vinylimidazole/4-vinylpyridine adsorbents

Two silica gel based adsorbents for Re (VII), i.e. SS-MPTS-VIMH and SS-MPTS-VPQ, were synthesised. Silica gel was used as the matrix for γ-radiation grafting, and the monomer of 1-vinyl imidazole (VIM) and 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) was grafted onto the silica silanized by methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane, respectively. A VIM concentration of 2molL^-1 and an absorbed dose of 30kGy were the optimal grafting conditions for adsorbent SS-MPTS-VIM, and a 4-VP concentration of 4molL^-1 and an absorbed dose of 40kGy were the optimal grafting conditions for adsorbent SS-MPTS-VP. At the certain condition, the grafting yield of SS-MPTS-VIM was 30.1% and that of SS-MPTS-VP was 21.0%. The adsorption capacity of adsorbent SS-MPTS-VIMH was 145.99mgg^-1 and that of SS-MPTS-VPQ was 71.08mgg^-1 according to the Langmuir model. The adsorbent SS-MPTS-VPQ had better adsorption properties of acid resistance and anti-interference than SS-MPTS-VIMH. Dynamic column experiments showed that protonated adsorbent SS-MTPS-VIMH could be recycled with good performance while quaternized adsorbent SS-MPTS-VPQ could not. The adsorbent SS-MPTS-VIMH belongs to weak anion exchange adsorbent and SS-MPTS-VPQ belongs to strong anion exchange adsorbent. This study paves a way to the synthesis and application of a novel silica base adsorbents for Re (VII).

Novel thymine-functionalized MIL-101 prepared by post-synthesis and enhanced removal of Hg(2+) from water

A novel thymine-functionalized MIL-101 (MIL-101-Thymine) material was synthesized using a post-synthesis method to remove mercury at a high efficiency. MIL-101-Thymine was successfully prepared in this work and was confirmed by several characterization methods, such as (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy. The Hg(2+) adsorption agreed well with the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 51.27mg/g. The adsorption rate fit with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, MIL-101-Thymine exhibited excellent selectivity towards Hg(2+) over other cations, and the maximum value of the selective coefficient reached 947.34; this result is very likely due to the highly selective interactions of T-Hg(2+)-T in MIL-101-Thymine. The result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy also showed that Hg(2+) was coordinated with the N of thymine in MIL-101-Thymine. Moreover, the results of the thermogravimetric analysis and adsorption experiments showed that the Hg atom was two-coordinated with the thymine group. MIL-101-Thymine was used to remove trace Hg(2+) in real water samples, and satisfactory recoveries were obtained.

Silylation of leached-vermiculites following reaction with imidazole and copper sorption behavior

Organically modified vermiculites were synthesized by previous silylation of three leached vermiculites, V0.3Cl, V0.5Cl and V0.8Cl, under anhydrous conditions following reaction with imidazole (Im), which acted as chelating agent for copper retention. Elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, (29)Si and (13)C NMR and nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements were used to characterize pristine, leached and organofunctionalized solids. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to evaluate the surface after copper sorption. Parameters such as contact time, pH and initial cation concentration for the adsorption of Cu(II) ions were investigated. The adsorption equilibrium data were fitted using the Langmuir isotherm model and the monolayer adsorption capacities were 2.38, 2.52 and 2.69mmolg(-1) for V0.5Cl-Im, V0.3Cl-Im and V0.8Cl-Im, respectively, at pH 6.0 and 298K for a time reaction of 80min. The sorption rates were described by pseudo-second-order kinetics. The chloropropyl imidazole vermiculites are promising adsorbents for the rapid removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution.

Removal of Hg(II) by poly(1-vinylimidazole)-grafted Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles

Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles modified by grafting poly(1-vinylimidazole) oligomer (FSPV) was fabricated as a novel adsorbent to remove Hg(II) from water. Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy confirmed the successful grafting of oligomer, and thermogravimetric analysis showed FSPV had a high grafting yield with organic content of 22.8%. Transmission electron microscopy image displayed that FSPV particles were polymer-coated spheres with size of 10-20 nm. With saturation magnetization of 44.7 emu/g, FSPV particles could be easily separated from water with a simple magnetic process in 5 min. The Hg(II) adsorption capacity of FSPV was found to be 346 mg/g at pH 7 and 25 °C in 10 mM NaCl. Moreover, the removal of Hg(II) by FSPV was not obviously affected by solution pH (from 4 to 10) or humic acid (up to 8 mg/L as TOC). The presence of seven common ions including Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Cl(-), NO3(-), and SO4(2-) (up to 100 mM ionic strength) slightly increased the adsorption of Hg(II) by FSPV. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the N atom of the imidazole ring was responsible for the bonding with Hg(II), whereas the bonding of Hg with N did not result in cleavage of Hg-Cl bond in HgCl2 and HgClOH. The regeneration of Hg(II)-loaded FSPV could be achieved with 0.5 M HCl rapidly in 10 min, and the removal of Hg(II) maintained above 94% in five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. Therefore, FSPV could serve as a promising adsorbent for Hg(II) removal from water.

Synthesis of silica gel supported salicylaldehyde modified PAMAM dendrimers for the effective removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solution

A series of silica gel supported salicylaldehyde modified PAMAM dendrimers (SiO2-G0-SA ∼ SiO2-G2.0-SA) were synthesized and their structures were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, and porous structure analysis. The feasibility of these adsorbents for the removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solution was first described and the adsorption mechanism was proposed. The adsorption was found to depend on solution pH, the generation number of salicylaldehyde modified PAMAM dendrimers, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration. Results showed that the optimal pH was about 6 and the adsorption capacity increased with the increasing of generation number. Density functional theory (DFT) method was used to investigate the coordination geometries and the chelating mechanism. Adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo-second-order model with film diffusion process as rate controlling step. Adsorption isotherms revealed that adsorption capacities increased with the increasing of temperature. Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models were employed to analyze the equilibrium data. The adsorption can be well described by Langmuir isotherm model and took place by chemical mechanism. The thermodynamics properties indicated the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic nature. The maximum adsorption capacity of SiO2-G0-SA, SiO2-G1.0-SA, and SiO2-G2.0-SA were 0.91, 1.52, and 1.81 mmol g(-1), respectively. The considerable higher adsorption capacity compared with other adsorbents indicates SiO2-G0-SA ∼ SiO2-G2.0-SA are favorable and useful for the uptake of Hg (II), and can be potentially used as promising adsorbents for the effective removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solution.

Immobilization of 5-aminopyridine-2-tetrazole on cross-linked polystyrene for the preparation of a new adsorbent to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solution

Novel 5-aminopyridine-2-tetrazole-functionalized polystyrene resin (APTZ-PS) was prepared by anchoring 5-aminopyridine-2-carbonitrile onto chloromethylated polystyrene beads (CMPS) and subsequently using the cyano-tetrazole conversion reaction. The APTZ-PS resin was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and specific surface area and pore size analyses. The adsorption experiments of the prepared resin for heavy metal ions were conducted by batch methods. The effects of the experimental conditions, such as pH, contact time and initial metal ion concentration on the adsorption properties of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Hg(II) were investigated. The results showed that the resin possessed perfect adsorption capacities for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Hg(II), and the selectivity was different from the commonly used iminodiacetic acid-chelating resin. The sorption kinetics of the three metal ions followed the pseudo-second-order equation. The adsorption isotherms for Cu(II) and Pb(II) could be better fitted by the Langmuir model than the Freundlich model, whereas the Freundlich model was the best for the Hg(II) ion. Even after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, no obvious change in the adsorption capacity of the resin was found, which implied that the APTZ-PS resin was suitable for the efficient removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution.

Highly selective colorimetric detection and preconcentration of Bi(III) ions by dithizone complexes anchored onto mesoporous TiO2

We successfully developed a single-step detection and removal unit for Bi(III) ions based on dithizone (DZ) anchored on mesoporous TiO2 with rapid colorometric response and high selectivity for the first time. [(DZ)3-Bi] complex is easily separated and collected by mesoporous TiO2 as adsorbent and preconcentrator without any color change of the produced complex onto the surface of mesoporous TiO2 (TiO2-[(DZ)3-Bi]) at different Bi(III) concentrations. This is because highly potent mesoporous TiO2 architecture provides proficient channeling or movement of Bi(III) ions for efficient binding of metal ion, and the simultaneous excellent adsorbing nature of mesoporous TiO2 provides an extra plane for the removal of metal ions.
