Multivariate methods for evaluating the efficiency of electrodialytic removal of heavy metals from polluted harbour sediments

Removal of heavy metals from fly ash using electrodialysis driven by a bioelectrochemical system: a case study of Pb, Mn, Cu and Cd

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is classified as hazardous waste due to high leachable heavy metals, and incineration leachate belongs to organic wastewater with high biodegradability. Electrodialysis (ED) has shown potential for the removal of heavy metals from fly ash, and bioelectrochemical system (BES) employs biological and electrochemical reactions to generate electricity and remove contaminants from a wide range of substrates. In this study, the ED-BES coupled system was constructed for the co-treatment of fly ash and incineration leachate, where the ED was driven by BES. The treatment effect of fly ash by varying additional voltage, initial pH and liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio was evaluated. Results showed that the highest removal rates of Pb, Mn, Cu and Cd were 25.43%, 20.13%, 32.14% and 18.87% after 14 days treatment of the coupled system, respectively. These values were obtained under 300 mV of additional voltage, L/S 20 and initial pH3. After the treatment of the coupled system, the fly ash leaching toxicity was lower than the threshold of GB5085.3-2007. The highest energy saving for removed Pb, Mn, Cu and Cd were 6.72, 15.61, 8.99 and 17.46 kWh/kg, respectively. The ED-BES can be considered a cleanliness approach to treating fly ash and incineration leachate simultaneously.

Cd immobilization efficacy of biogenic Mn oxide formed by Cladosporium sp. XM01 and its biological response in sediment

Biogenic Mn oxides (BMOs), the main component of natural Mn oxides, closely relate to Cd in sediment. However, the immobilization behavior of Cd in sediments by BMOs is currently unclear. This study explores the role of BMO produced by the Mn-oxidizing fungus Cladosporium sp. XM01 in mediating the Cd immobilization and its biological response in sediment. A comparison is made with those of a chemical Mn oxide (CMO, triclinic birnessite). After 45 d of remediation, the results showed that the application of BMO reduced the extractable Cd by 32.20-64.40% based on the TCLP (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) and by 26.16-51.43% based on the PBET (physiologically based extraction test). Additionally, BMO was more effective at immobilizing Cd than CMO in sediments. The BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) extraction results suggested that BMO converted some acid-soluble components (20.63-33.23%) of Cd into residual components (9.40-20.68%). Moreover, the urease and catalase activity gradually increased within the first 25 days and then stabilized after applying BMO. Microbial community analysis revealed that the addition of a high-dose BMO was more conducive to increasing microbial abundance and biodiversity. This study verifies that BMO is a low-cost, high-efficiency, and eco-friendly material for immobilizing Cd in sediment.

The effect of Zostera noltei recolonization on the sediment mercury vertical profiles of a recovering coastal lagoon

Mercury's extreme toxicity and persistence in the environment justifies a thorough evaluation of its dynamics in ecosystems. Aveiro Lagoon (Portugal) was for decades subject to mercury effluent discharges. A Nature-based Solution (NbS) involving Zostera noltei re-colonization is being tested as an active ecosystem restoration measure. To study the effect of Zostera noltei on the sediment contaminant biogeochemistry, seasonal (summer/winter) sediment, interstitial water and labile mercury vertical profiles were made in vegetated (Transplanted and Natural seagrass meadows) and non-vegetated sites (Bare-bottom area). While no significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed in the sedimentary phase, Zostera noltei presence reduced the reactive/labile mercury concentrations in the top sediment layers by up to 40% when compared to non-vegetated sediment, regardless of season. No differences were found between vegetated meadows, highlighting the fast recovery of the contaminant regulation ecosystem function provided by the plants after re-colonization and its potential for the rehabilitation of historically contaminated ecosystems.

The extent of microplastic pollution along the eastern coast of India: Focussing on marine waters, beach sand, and fish

In this study, for the first time, we evaluated microplastic contamination in water, beach sand, and fish samples collected from the seven most famous and crowded beaches of the eastern coast of India, which cover around 1200 km. The average number of microplastics found was 80 ± 33 microplastics/m3 and 4 ± 2 microplastics/kg dry weight with a numerical abundance of polyethylene and polystyrene for water and sand samples, respectively. The polymer hazard index score, which represents the severity of the microplastics scenario in the studied locations, depicts that this coastline falls under hazard levels IV and V (most hazardous) for water and sand samples, respectively. The study revealed that approximately 30 % of the commercially important fishes collected from the locations contained microplastics with polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene being the most abundant types. Rastrelliger kanagurta and Sardinella gibbosa were identified as the most polluted species.

Removing Lead from Contaminated Sediment Using Indium-Based Perovskite Precursor

Heavy metal pollution in river and lake sediments seriously damages river ecological safety and indirectly affects human health. The existing research mainly focuses on how to adsorb pollutants and repair sediment, and how the reuse of these pollutants may be a new technology to control sediment pollutants. The rapid development of perovskite solar cells in recent years has attracted a lot of attention, among which lead (Pb) halide perovskites have very excellent photoelectric performance. In this study, we propose a novel idea of introducing indium (In)-based perovskite to replace Pb (II) ions dispersed in river and lake sediment. Three sediment samples from a river in Shanghai Peace Park were collected to analyze the distribution of heavy metal Pb. We mixed the digestion solution of sediment with the prepared CH₃NH₃(MA)InICl₂ solution and found that indium (In) in perovskite precursor solution would be gradually replaced by Pb in sediments. An in situ synchrotron radiation XRD experiment was performed to reveal the reaction mechanism of solutions and provide a good research platform for the comprehensive reuse of sediment in the future. This study provides a new method of remediation of heavy metal pollution in river and lake sediments.

Chemical stabilization of heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash: a review

Sufficient attention should be attached to the large amount of fly ash containing high levels of toxic heavy metals generated after municipal solid waste incineration. Because heavy metals could be leached out of the fly ash under specific conditions, it is necessary to stabilize the heavy metals in fly ash before landfill disposal. Processing technologies of incineration fly ash include solidification/stabilization technology, thermal treatments, and separation processes. This study reviewed the current treatment technologies of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash, with the main focus on the treatment of heavy metals in fly ash with chemical stabilization. Chemical stabilization processes involve chemical precipitation of heavy metal and chelation of heavy metals. In multiple studies, chemical stabilization technology has shown practical feasibility in terms of technology, economy, and effect. In addition, the combination of two or more stabilization agents broadens the general applicability of the agents to heavy metals and reduces the cost. The application of joint processing technology realizes the remove of soluble salt from fly ash. To minimize pollutants while increase their usable value, effective use of waste and co-disposal of several kinds of wastes have gradually become the research hotspots. New developments in chemical stabilization are progressively moving towards the sustainable direction of harmlessness and resource utilization of MSWI fly ash.

An overview and assessment of the existing technological options for management and resource recovery from beach wrack and dredged sediments: An environmental and economic perspective

The present work discusses the problems and management options of beach wrack and dredged sediments. Beach wrack and dredged sediments near the shores have affected the coastal ecosystem, badly. The piles of beach wrack residues might be a significant emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and dredged sediment is a substantial source of heavy metals and other pollutants. The recovery of valuable resources such as metals and nutrients from these so-called "wastes" is a sustainable strategy to enhance the resilience of the coastal ecosystem and management. The beach wrack meadows can be a potential source for green energy production. Even the demand for biodegradable polymers can be supplied by utilizing the waste beach wracks. The residues of beach wrack species like Posidonia oceanica, Zostera marina, Ulva spc. and Enhalus acorodies can be very beneficial species in terms of economic growth. Red algae have been the most favored and efficient candidate for methane yield. In case of dredged sediment, dewatering of sediment is an essential step for successful resource extraction. Although, extraction methods are almost similar to that applied for soil treatment, which includes pretreatment, physical partitioning, washing, thermal treatment, biological extraction, and immobilization. The fractionation study can be a beneficial tool for determining the metal species present in the sediment. Immobilization techniques are successful but continuous monitoring is required. The vitrification technique is highly effective but very expensive. Thermal treatment is useful for volatile metals such as mercury (Hg), but costs are high. Biological extractions are comparatively cheap but time-consuming. Henceforth, very few extraction methods are available for sediment and required further advancement in this field.

Role of intertidal microbial communities in carbon dioxide sequestration and pollutant removal: A review

Intertidal microbial communities occur as biofilms or microphytobenthos (MPB) which are sediment-attached assemblages of bacteria, protozoa, fungi, algae, diatoms embedded in extracellular polymeric substances. Despite their global occurrence, they have not been reviewed in light of their structural and functional characteristics. This paper reviews the importance of such microbial communities and their importance in carbon dioxide sequestration as well as pollutant bioremediation. Global annual benthic microalgal productivity was 500 million tons of carbon, 50% of which contributed towards the autochthonous carbon fixation in the estuaries. Primary production by MPB was 27-234 gCm^-2y^-1 in the estuaries of Asia, Europe and the United States. Mechanisms of heavy metal removal remain to be tested in intertidal communities. Cyanobacteria facilitate hydrocarbon degradation in intertidal biofilms and microbial mats by supporting the associated sulfate-reducing bacteria and aerobic heterotrophs. Physiological cooperation between the microorganisms in intertidal communities imparts enhanced ability to utilize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants by these microorganisms than mono-species communities. Future research may be focused on biochemical characteristics of intertidal mats and biofilms, pollutant-microbial interactions and ecosystem influences.

Comparison of two- and three-compartment cells for electrodialytic removal of heavy metals from contaminated material suspensions

Electrodialytic remediation can be applied to remove heavy metals from contaminated particulate materials in suspension. The applied electric current is the cleaning agent and the heavy metals are removed by electromigration. In this study, a two-compartment cell was compared to a three-compartment cell, for several contaminated materials such as soils, sediments, mine tailings and ashes and totally 20 experiments were conducted. The pH decrease was faster in the two-compartment cell, but the metal removal was higher in the three-compartment cell since anionic metal species are removed from the material suspension in this cell set-up. For materials with relatively high chloride content, fly ash and harbour sediments, up to 38% of the metals were found in the filtrate in the two-compartment cell. Up to 9% of the current was used to transport heavy metal ions in the experiments and the current was mainly carried by H⁺ and Ca²⁺. Even with the lower pH in the two-compartment cell experiments, there was little difference in the percentage of the current carried by the metal ions between the two set-ups. Multivariate analysis showed that the choice of cell set-up depends on the metals targeted by remediation and the material characteristics.

Simultaneous electrodialytic removal of PAH, PCB, TBT and heavy metals from sediments

Contaminated sediments are remediated in order to protect human health and the environment, with the additional benefit of using the treated sediments for other activities. Common for many polluted sediments is the contamination with several different pollutants, making remediation challenging with the need of different remedial actions for each pollutant. In this study, electrodialytic remediation (EDR) of sediments was found effective for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organic pollutants for sediments from Arctic regions - Sisimiut in Greenland and Hammerfest in Norway. The influence of sediment properties and experimental settings on the remediation process was studied by employing multivariate analysis. The importance of the variables studied varied with the pollutant and based on these results it was possible to assess removal processes for the different pollutants. Desorption was found to be important for the removal of heavy metals and TBT, while photolysis was significant for removal of PAH, PCB and TBT. In addition, dechlorination was found to be important for the removal of PCB. The highest removal efficiencies were found for heavy metals, TBT and PCB (>40%) and lower removal efficiencies for PAH (<35%).

Occurrence and risk assessment of heavy metals in sediments of the Xiangjiang River, China

Sediment samples were collected from 22 typical metal-polluted sections along the Xiangjiang River (XJR). Spatial distribution and speciation characteristics of heavy metals in sediments of XJR were determined. Furthermore, ecological risk and enrichment degree of metals were assessed by different indices. The results showed that combined metal pollution occurred in sediments of XJR, with content range of Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Mn, Cr, and Hg reaching 2.95-29.15, 30.93-235.83, 61.50-3771.11, 9.56-81.81, 3.93-46.28, 774.83-8700.72, 10.64-65.16, and 0.13-5.09 mg kg^-1, respectively. Pollution levels increased in period of industrialization but decreased after thousands of pollution enterprises were banned. Sections with serious pollution and higher risk were mainly located at Hengyang and Chang-Zhu-Tan regions (Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan) for contaminations of Cd, As, Pb, and Hg. Values of both enrichment factor and geo-accumulation index followed the order Cd > Hg > Zn > Mn > Pb > Cu > As > Cr. Bioavailable fractions followed the order Cd (66.93 %), Zn (33.80 %), Pb (30.81 %), Mn (18.38 %), Hg (17.58 %), Cu (10.20 %), As (9.81 %), and Cr (7.65 %). Considering their bioavailability, biotoxicity, or abundance, contamination of Cd was the most dominant, and pollution of other metals should not be ignored.

Applying multivariate analysis as decision tool for evaluating sediment-specific remediation strategies

Multivariate methodology was employed for finding optimum remediation conditions for electrodialytic remediation of harbour sediment from an Arctic location in Norway. The parts of the experimental domain in which both sediment- and technology-specific remediation objectives were met were identified. Objectives targeted were removal of the sediment-specific pollutants Cu and Pb, while minimising the effect on the sediment matrix by limiting the removal of naturally occurring metals while maintaining low energy consumption. Two different cell designs for electrochemical remediation were tested and final concentrations of Cu and Pb were below background levels in large parts of the experimental domain when operating at low current densities (<0.12 mA/cm(2)). However, energy consumption, remediation times and the effect on naturally occurring metals were different for the 2- and 3-compartment cells.

Degradation of oil products in a soil from a Russian Barents hot-spot during electrodialytic remediation

A highly oil-polluted soil from Krasnoe in North-West Russia was used to investigate the degradation of organic pollutants during electrodialytic remediation. Removal efficiencies were up to 70 % for total hydrocarbons (THC) and up to 65 % for polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Relatively more of the lighter PAH compounds and THC fractions were degraded. A principal component analysis (PCA) revealed a difference in the distribution of PAH compounds after the remediation. The observed clustering of experiments in the PCA scores plot was assessed to be related to the stirring rate. Multivariate analysis of the experimental settings and final concentrations in the 12 experiments revealed that the stirring rate of the soil suspension was by far the most important parameter for the remediation for both THC and PAH. Light was the second most important variable for PAH and seems to influence degradation. The experimental variables current density and remediation time did not significantly influence the degradation of the organic pollutants. Despite current density not influencing the remediation, there is potential for degrading organic pollutants during electrodialytic removal of heavy metals, as long as a stirred set-up is applied. Depending on remediation objectives, further optimisation may be needed in order to develop efficient remediation strategies.
