Abstract
A simple technique was developed for the modification of cotton materials that is inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and very effective. Waste Cotton fabrics (WCFs) are loaded with propolis extract (PE) for Cu2+ removal. Then, Cu2+ underwent a pyrolysis process with modified cuttlebone (CB) at 900 °C for 5 h. The surface of the prepared materials was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET, particle sizes, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and zeta potential analysis. The Cu2+ metal ions from an aqueous solution were removed using WCFs/PE, and DLM was subsequently removed using pyro WCFs/PE/Cu/CB. The as-prepared NPs exhibited the face-centered cubic structure of WCFs/PE/Cu/CB with crystallite sizes ranging from 386.70 to 653.10 nm. FTIR spectra revealed that CB was present on the surface of the resulting WCFs/PE/Cu. SEM revealed the dispersion of a uniformly flower-like morphology over a large area. Sorption studies were performed based on parameters that included pH, dose, contact time, and initial concentration. The adsorption isotherm and the kinetic studies of the DLM adsorption process were applied at a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 25 °C using several isotherms and kinetic models. The results revealed qmax (20.51 mg/g) with R2 = 0.97, the Langmuir isotherm that best matches the experimental data. Hence, the Langmuir isotherm suggests that it is the model that best describes sorption on homogenous surfaces or surface-supporting sites with various affinities. The correlation coefficient R2, χ2, adjusted correlation coefficient, and error functions like root mean square (RMSE), normalized root mean square error (NRMES), and mean absolute error (MAE) were used to evaluate the best-fit models to the experimental adsorption data. Moreover, cost estimation for the prepared adsorbent WCFs/PE/Cu showed that it costs approximately 3 USD/g, which is a cheap adsorbent compared to other similar adsorbents reported in the literature. The examined WCFs/PE have significant applicability potential for Cu2+-laden wastewater treatment due to their superior Cu2+ metal ions adsorption capability and reusability. The cytotoxicity and safety study showed that at higher concentrations, it resulted in much less cell viability. Additionally, the removal efficiency of Cu2+ metal ions from synthetic, realistic industrial wastewater using WCFs/PE reached up to 96.29 %, demonstrating good adsorption capability. Thus, there is a huge possibility of accomplishing this and performing well. This study paves the way for the reuse and valorization of selected adsorbents following circular economy principles. Two green metrics were applied, the Analytical Eco-scale and the Analytical GREEnness Calculator (AGREE).

Abstract
Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants is a green and effective route of wastewater treatment. Zinc oxide was initially used for this purpose; however, calcined zinc/chromium layered double hydroxide (ZnCr-LDO) and cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdSQDs)-based nanocomposites proved as superior alternatives. Herein, we report a green sonochemical method for the sol-gel fabrication of novel CdSQDs@ZnCr-LDO/ZnO ternary nanocomposite that exhibited exceptional photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B dye (RhB), in wastewaters, under UV-A-irradiation. The features of the ternary nanocomposite were investigated using various physicochemical techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, XPS, BET, zeta potential, DRS, and PL measurements. The RhB dye % removal was 38.02, 40.2, and 98% using pristine ZnO, ZnCr-LDO and the ternary CdSQDs@ZnCr-LDO/ZnO-based nanomaterials, respectively, reflecting the superior ternary nanocomposite's photocatalytic activity that made it an excellent competitor to commonly reported photocatalysts. Additionally, an investigation was carried out to determine the key reactive species in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB, considering both scavenger's type and concentration. The prevailing mechanism was found to be the reductive photodegradation pathway. Furthermore, several models were utilized to describe the kinetics of photocatalytic performance of the ternary nanocomposite and a typical Z-scheme type-II photocatalytic heterojunction mechanism was inferred.

Effective stabilization of heavy metals in solid waste and sludge pyrolysis using intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite: Experiment and simulation study. Abstract
Pyrolysis is effective in reducing the volume of solid waste and sludge, and produces less pollutants than incineration and landfill, but the process still suffers from heavy metal pollution. Four types of intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (UIV, DIV, TIV and 3IV) were prepared using urea, dimethylsulfoxide, tributyl phosphate and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as intercalators for the control of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in municipal sewage sludge (MSL), paper mill sludge (PML), municipal domestic waste (MWA) and aged refuse (AFE). The larger the interlayer spacing of the vermiculite, the more favorable the retention of heavy metals. 3IV was the most effective additive, with an average retention of more than 75 % of all heavy metals at 450 ℃ for the four raw materials. Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were all at low potential ecological risk (Pr), while Cd was moderate or considerable Pr, and the addition of 3IV reduced the Pr. Distribution of intercalators between vermiculite interlayers was haphazard, and interlayer spacing results were close to those of the experiment (except for tributyl phosphate). The reactive electrons mainly flowed from the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) of vermiculite flakes to the Lower Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) of heavy metal chlorides. In contrast, the reactive electrons mostly flowed from the HOMO of heavy metal oxides to the LUMO of vermiculite flakes. Heavy metal oxides were more readily adsorbed on vermiculite flakes than heavy metal chlorides, and the adsorption capacity of Cr and Zn was stronger than that of Cd, Pb and Cu.

Abstract
The synthesis of iron-based nanoparticles (Fe NPs) using traditional preparation methods suffered from the disadvantages of high cost, environmental harm, and easy agglomeration. In this study, a novel eco-friendly method was proposed for the synthesis of iron nanomaterials (ML-Fe NPs): using antioxidant components extracted from mulberry leaf to reduce divalent iron (II). The preparation conditions of ML-Fe NPs were optimized by orthogonal tests. The prepared ML-Fe NPs exhibited an amorphous core-shell structure, displaying excellent dispersion and stability. During the synthesis process of ML-Fe NPs, the polyphenol molecules in mulberry leaf extract played a dominant role. A possible synthetic mechanism involving complexation, reduction, and encapsulation was proposed. Furthermore, the ML-Fe NPs were utilized to construct an ML-Fe NPs/peroxymonosulfate catalytic system for the degradation of Rhodamine B dye wastewater. The ML-Fe NPs demonstrated remarkable catalytic potential, achieving a 99% degradation efficiency for Rhodamine B within a span of 40 min.

Constructing mesoporous biochar derived from waste carton: Improving multi-site adsorption of dye wastewater and investigating mechanism. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2024; 242:117775. Abstract
The development of cost-efficient biochar adsorbent with a simple preparation method is essential to constructing efficient wastewater treatment system. Here, a low-cost waste carton biochar (WCB) prepared by a simple two-step carbonization was applied in efficiently removing Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous environment. The maximum ability of WCB for RhB adsorption was 222 mg/g, 6 and 10 times higher than both of rice straw biochar (RSB) and broadbean shell biochar (BSB), respectively. It was mainly ascribed to the mesopore structure (3.0-20.4 nm) of WCB possessing more spatial sites compared to RSB (2.2 nm) and BSB (2.4 nm) for RhB (1.4 nm✕1.1 nm✕0.6 nm) adsorption. Furthermore, external mass transfer (EMT) controlled mass transfer resistance (MTR) of the RhB sorption process by WCB which was fitted with the Langmuir model well. Meanwhile, the adsorption process was dominated by physisorption through van der Waals forces and π-π interactions. A mixture of three dyes in river water was well removed by using WCB. This work provides a straightforward method of preparing mesoporous biochar derived from waste carton with high-adsorption capacity for dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In this study, we introduce a novel series of gemini surfactants with amide groups (HDAB, HDAHD, and HDAPX) and use these surfactants to decorate sodium vermiculite (Na-Vt) for the adsorption of Ibuprofen (IBP) from wastewater. Exceptional IBP uptake on organo-vermiculites (organo-Vts) is obtained, with maximum adsorption capacities reaching 249.87, 342.21, and 460.15 mg/g for HDAB-Vt, HDAHD-Vt, and HDAPX-Vt (C0 = 500 mg/L, modifier dosage = 0.2 CEC), respectively. The adsorption of IBP is well fitted by pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Freundlich isotherm models, verifying chemical adsorption processes with multilayer arrangement of IBP in organo-Vts. Thermodynamically, the removal of IBP on HDAHD-Vt is exothermic, while the endothermic nature aptly describes the adsorption process of HDAB-Vt and HDAPX-Vt. Moreover, organo-Vts can be stably regenerated in three cycles. Outstanding adsorption performance of organo-Vts is attributed to synergistic effects of the partition process and functional interaction, which are influenced by the steric hindrance and chain configuration of the modifier. A combined evaluation of adsorption tests and fitting calculations is employed to reveal the adsorption mechanism: (i) the incorporation of amides into the alkyl chain significantly enhances the utilization of the interlayer space in organo-Vts. (ii) Smaller steric hindrance and higher rigidity of the modifier spacer contribute to improved adsorption performance. The findings in this study rekindle interest in Vt-based adsorbents, which demonstrate comparable potential to other emerging adsorbents that are yet to be fully explored.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) and dye pollutants are widespread in aquatic environments. Here, the adsorption characteristics of anionic dye methyl orange (MO) and cationic dye malachite green (MG) on polyamide 6 (PA6) and polyamide 66 (PA66) MPs were investigated, including kinetics, isotherm equilibrium and thermodynamics. The co-adsorption of MO and MG under different pH was also evaluated. The results reveal that the adsorption process of MO and MG is suitably expounded by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The process can be characterized by two stages: internal diffusion and external diffusion. The isothermal adsorption equilibrium of MO and MG can be effectively described using the Langmuir model, signifying monolayer adsorption. Furthermore, the thermodynamic results indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous with exothermic and endothermic properties, respectively. The results of binary systems reveal that MO dominates the adsorption at low pH (2-5), while MG dominates at high pH (8-10). Strong competitive adsorption was observed between MO and MG in neutral conditions (pH 6-8). The desorption experiments confirm that PA6 and PA66 could serve as potential carriers of MO and MG. The interaction between dyes and polyamide MPs is primarily mediated through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic attraction. The results reveal that PA6 formed more hydrogen bonds with the dyes, resulting in higher adsorption capacity than that of PA66. This difference can be attributed to the disparities in the synthesis process and polymerization method. Our study uncovered the adsorption mechanism of dye pollutants on PA6 and PA66, and provided a more comprehensive theoretical basis for the risk assessment concerning different types of polyamide MPs in aquatic environments.

Abstract
The development of photocatalysis is hindered, in part, by the quick recombination of photogenerated carriers and the instability of light sources. In this study, the problem of too-fast electron-hole pair compounding in photocatalysis is effectively regulated by the polarization field of pyroelectric materials using the pyroelectric method. Self-polarized pyroelectric materials that depend on temperature variations can generate usable electrical energy and polarized charge carriers to degrade organic pollutants. Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) is a relaxor ferroelectric material with spontaneous polarization characteristics. The PMN-0.30PT:1 mol%Sm3+ catalyst was prepared by applying the high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Under the dark condition and nine cold-hot cycles of 23 °C-68 °C, using H2O2-assisted PMN-0.30PT:1 mol%Sm3+ as a catalyst, the degradation rate of rhodamine 6G (10 mg L-1) was 94.3 ± 2.5%. In addition, the degradation rates of 88.52% and 64.32% were obtained for rhodamine B (10 mg L-1) and methylene blue (10 mg L-1), respectively. This study provides a new approach to the pyroelectric catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract
With the increasingly worldwide concentration of environmental pollution, exploiting cost-effective adsorbents has been a research hotspot. Here we introduce novel "functional connector" amide-containing gemini surfactants (LDAB, LDAPP, LDAMP and LDABP) and apply to modify Na-vermiculite (Na-Vt) for Congo red (CR) removal. Chain amide as the functional connector in the modifier, increases 6.9 times of CR uptake than traditional organo-Vts, which is further enhanced by tunning the functional group of modifier spacers. Superb uptake of CR on organo-Vts reaches 1214.05, 1375.47 and 1449.80 mg/g, and the removal efficiencies achieve 80.94%, 91.70% and 96.65% on LDAB-Vt, LDAPP-Vt and LDAMP-Vt, respectively. Notably, the maximum experimental adsorption capacity of LDAPP-Vt is 1759.64 mg/g. These experimental values are among the highest reported CR adsorbents. A combination experimental and theoretical analysis is conducted to unveil the structure-adsorptivity relationship: (i) Adsorptivity enhancement of organo-Vts is more effectively by regulating functional chains than the functional spacer. (ii) para-substituted aromatic spacers own the best adsorptive configuration and strongest stability for π-π interaction. (iii) π-π interaction provided by isolated aromatic ring is stronger than biphenyl, whose steric hindrance depresses the adsorptivity. Results in this study not only explain a new "functional connector" strategy to Vt-based adsorbents, but also provide a practical designing strategy for organic adsorbents characterized with high uptake capacity.

Abstract
To explore the effect of spacer structure on the adsorption capability of organo-vermiculites (organo-Vts), a series of aza-containing gemini surfactants (5N, 7N and 8N) are applied to modify Na-vermiculite (Na-Vt). Large interlayer spacing, strong binding strength and high modifier availability are observed in organo-Vts, which endow them with superiority for the adsorption of 2-naphthol (2-NP) and bromophenol blue (BPB). The maximum adsorption capacities of 5N-Vt, 7N-Vt and 8N-Vt toward 2-NP/BPB are 142.08/364.49, 156.61/372.65 and 146.50/287.90 mg/g, respectively, with the adsorption processes well fit by the PSO model and Freundlich isotherm. The quicker adsorption equilibrium of 2-NP than BPB is due to the easier diffusion of smaller 2-NP molecules into the interlayer space of organo-Vts. Moreover, stable regeneration of 7N-Vt is verified, with feasibility in the binary-component system that is demonstrated. A combination of theoretical simulation and characterization is conducted to reveal the adsorption mechanism; the adsorption processes are mainly through partition processes, electrostatic interaction and functional interactions, in which the spacer structure affects the interlayer environment and adsorptive site distribution, whereas the adsorbate structure plays a role in the diffusion process and secondary intermolecular interactions. The results of this study demonstrate the versatile applicability of aza-based organo-Vts targeted at the removal of phenols and dyes as well as provide theoretical guidance for the structural optimization and mechanistic exploration of organo-Vt adsorbents.

Abstract
This study aims to develop an alternating polyketone containing cationic groups in one and four alternating positions for increased functionality. A novel polyarylidene ketone was synthesized using simple condensation polymerization of terephthaldehyde and 2,5-hexane dione (PAK) The physicochemical properties of the resulting polymer were evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, UV-Visible absorbance, fluorescence, and SEM investigations. The findings show that the polymer is amorphous, has good thermal stability, and emits red light. It can also be used as a dye adsorbent in aqueous solutions, with high selectivity for the cationic dye methylene blue (MB). The adsorbent efficiency of PAK was measured as a function of pH, dosage, and initial dye concentration; the greatest dye removal of 96 % was obtained at pH 10, 50 mg dosage, and initial dye concentration of 20 ppm. Kinetics and isotherms were studied, showing that the pseudo-second-order model described kinetic data better than Freundlich and Langmuir and revealed a satisfactory chemisorption process. This study suggests that PAK can purify MB dyeing wastewater, remove Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Fe3+ metal ions well, and is selective for Fe3+ and Cu2+; ion adsorption is chelating-based.

Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride (GCN), a polymeric metal free catalyst is widely used to degrade the toxic organic dye from the aqueous pollution. However, its catalytic efficiency and effective simultaneous reduction of mixed dye is still a challenge. Here, we have tuned the physiochemical properties of the GCN and melem derivatives by facilely tuning the degree of polycondensation and examined their catalytic activity towards the removal of cationic dye individually and together in solution. Catalysts were synthesized by thermal treatment of low-cost melamine and characterized by XRD, FTIR, RAMAN, FE-SEM, EDX, UV-DRS, and FL spectroscopy to confirm materials' structure, phase, morphology and optical properties. A suitable phase of the catalyst (M-450) exhibited superior removal capacity with a high-rate constant compared to others. The results demonstrate that M-450 has a maximum loading efficacy of 2.13 and 1.12 mg g-1 for methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) dyes respectively in a single dye system. Attractively, when MB and RhB co-exist in the solution, the efficacy increased by 14% (2.44 mg g-1) and 27% (1.43 mg g-1) for MB and RhB respectively. The adsorption kinetics, stability, effect of pH and reusability of M-450 catalyst was testified. Further, radical scavenger experiments and terephthalic acid tests were carried out to explain the reaction mechanism involved in the degradation of textile dyes. Moreover, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis validated the availability of hydroxyl radicals in the photocatalytic reaction. Excellent stability and reusability were attained even after five successive cycles, demonstrating a suitable photocatalyst for the efficient degradation of mixed dye.

Abstract
Research on low-cost bio-adsorbents for the removal of harmful substances from effluents has recently attracted significant attention. In this study, three types of amino-silane-modified lignins (ASLs) with primary, secondary, and tertiary amine groups were prepared, and their adsorption behavior toward cationic and anionic dyes was investigated. Chemical structural analyses indicated that the three amino-silane reagents resulted in different molecular self-assembly structures on the lignin surface. The ASLs exhibited enhanced thermal stabilities and increased surface areas with different surface charges in different pH ranges. Owing to the high density of primary, secondary, and tertiary amine groups, the ASLs exhibited excellent adsorption capacities for cationic and anionic dyes. Additionally, they selectively adsorb anionic and cationic dyes according to the pH conditions. The ASL with primary amine had the highest adsorption capacity for Methylene blue and Congo red, reaching 187.27 and 293.26 mg·g-1, respectively, followed by ASLs with the secondary amine and tertiary amine. All adsorption processes followed the Langmuir and Temkin isotherms and had pseudo-second-order kinetics. The hypothesized adsorption mechanism mainly involves electrostatic interaction, NH-π interaction, hydrogen bonding interaction and π-π interaction.

Abstract
To pursue the adsorptivity of versatile vermiculite (Na-Vt)-based adsorbent targeted at emerging pharmaceuticals (mefenamic acid and ibuprofen, corresponding to MEA and IBP, respectively), a quinoline-based gemini surfactant (DHQU) with multi-functional groups is applied as modifier on Na-Vt. Enhanced hydrophobicity, enlarged interlayer space and decreased surface area of DHQU-Vt are obtained, whose modifier availability (the mole ratio of modifier intercalated to added) reaches up to 84.18% as characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TG-DTG, EA and BET analysis. Efficient adsorption of MEA/IBP (123.71/240.69 mg/g) is achieved under an extremely low DHQU dosage (0.2 CEC lower than the usual saturated dosage of organo-Vts), with all the processes fitting satisfactorily with pseudo-second order and Freundlich isotherm models accompanied by an exothermic nature. Acid pickling testifies a stable and reliable reusability process of DHQU-Vt even after 3 cycles. Multiple interactions (i.e., partition process, XH-π interaction, π-π interaction, π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction) are revealed and compared from not only characterization results, but also simulation of frontier orbital analysis, the adsorption configuration and bonding analysis: (i) The greater molecular flexibility of the adsorbate, the greater intra particle diffusion effect. (ii) π-π stacking between isolated aromatic rings is stronger than that between parallelly connected aromatic rings. (iii) The strength of multiple active sites provided by quinoline (CH-π, NH-π and π-π interactions) are comparable but weaker than electrostatic interaction/intra particle diffusion.

Abstract
Here, a low-cost acid-base and temperature tolerant algal bloom derived activated carbon (ABAC) was successfully prepared to remove rhodamine B (RhB) from water. The ABAC exhibited maximum adsorption capacity of RhB (1101 ± 11 mg/g), higher than that of laboratory-prepared rape straw activated carbon (176 ± 5 mg/g) and commercial activated carbon (489 ± 5 mg/g). It is attributed to larger surface area and mesoporous structure of the ABAC. Furthermore, the effective adsorption of RhB by using ABAC was achieved at a wide range of solution pH (3.2-10.8) and temperature(25-50 °C). The mass transfer resistance of RhB adsorption process well depicted by Langmuir model was controlled by external mass transfer. The adsorption process involved both secondly chemisorption (H-bonds and π-π interaction) and dominated physisorption. Four dyes in river water were efficiently removed. This work provides a promising approach for developing high-absorption biomass materials for actual dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The emergent occurrence of sulfonamide species involving sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) in aquatic systems can cause a wide range of potential risks; hence, remediation strategies need to be necessary. Here, we develop the novel metal-organic framework-derived nanocomposite, and apply for the adsorption of SDZ and SMZ antibiotics. To assess the best-fitting kinetic (pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order) and isotherm (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Toth, and Khan) models, a series of numerous statistical analysis was performed. Numerous error functions including squares of the errors (SSE), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), Marquardt's percent standard deviation (MPSD), and mean relative error (MRE) were also analyzed to assess the linear and nonlinear models. The results indicated that both linear and nonlinear kinetic models were mostly fitted well with pseudo second-order models (Radj)2 > 0.97. Although linear kinetics gave better (Radj)2, error functions (MRE, SSE, HYBRID, and MPSD) were mostly higher than those of nonlinear kinetics. For adsorption isotherm, nonlinear Redlich-Peterson was the most compatible model with extremely high adjusted coefficients of determination (Radj)2 ~ 1.0000. While nonlinear Langmuir model gave relatively high (Radj)2 (0.9898-0.9960) and acceptable error functions, we found the considerable difference of error functions and parameters among four types of linear Langmuir (Types I, II, III, IV). The findings indicate potential errors as selecting one of linearized Langmuir types in equilibrium study. It is suggested that nonlinear models should be applied for better fitness.

Abstract
In our work, the removal of cationic and anionic dyes from water was estimated both experimentally and computationally. We check the selectivity of the adsorbent, Zn-Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) toward three dyes. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesis adsorbent before and after the adsorption process were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, HRTEM, and FESEM analysis, particle size, zeta potential, optical and electric properties were estimated. The effect of pH on the adsorption process was estimated. The chemical stability was investigated at pH 4. Monte Carlo simulations were achieved to understand the mechanism of the adsorption process and calculate the adsorption energies. Single dye adsorption tests revealed that Zn-Fe LDH effectively takes up anionic methyl orange (MO) more than the cationic dyes methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG). From MO/MB/MG mixture experiments, LDH selectively adsorbed in the following order: MO > MB > MG. The adsorption capacity of a single dye solution was 230.68, 133.29, and 57.34 mg/g for MO, MB, and MG, respectively; for the ternary solution, the adsorption capacity was 217.97, 93.122, and 49.57 mg/g for MO, MB, and MG, respectively. Zn-Fe LDH was also used as a photocatalyst, giving 92.2% and 84.7% degradation at concentrations of 10 and 20 mg/L, respectively. For visible radiation, the Zn-Fe LDH showed no activity.

Abstract
A novel multi-hydroxyl-containing gemini surfactant (G16) is first designed for modifying silica precursors (SiNPs), with the purpose of fabricating organic adsorbents targeted at methyl orange (MO). The purity of G16 and structural character of the resultant G16-SiNPs are unveiled through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry-derivative thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and surface analysis (BET). Compared with SiNPs, G16-SiNPs exhibit enhanced hydrophobicity, enlarged interlayer spacing, and increased thermal weight losses with the modifier availability reaching as high as 100%. Enhanced MO adsorption is obtained from the higher adsorption capacity of G16-SiNPs (401.88 mg/g) than SiNPs (64.72 mg/g), which is more effective than most of the existing silica-based adsorbents. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models conform to all adsorption processes, indicating that the adsorption mainly relies on the availability of adsorption sites and characterized by a homogeneous adsorption form. By combining the experimental study and theoretical calculation methods, it can be demonstrated that the as-synthesized adsorbent G16-SiNPs own multi-active sites that contribute to multi-adsorption mechanisms. The partition process, electrostatic interactions, and OH-π interactions are all responsible for the adsorption performance of G16-SiNPs. This study throws light on the exploration of the superb MO adsorbent in aspects of not only the novel structured modifier and precursor but also theoretical analysis for gaining insights into the adsorption mechanism.

Abstract
Water pollution has become a worldwide threat as the natural water resources are shrinking day by day. Emergent actions are needed to conserve water stocks to fulfill the sustainable development goals. Herein, we have prepared activated carbon-doped magnetic nanocomposites (AC@CoFe2O4) with environment friendly approach and characterized for FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, BET surface area, and pHzpc. AC@CoFe2O4 nanocomposite was applied for the decolorization of toxic food dyes (rhodamine B and tartrazine) from wastewater. Effect of ultrasonic waves, pH, contact time, surfactants, temperature, and analysis of real wastewater systems were studied. Adsorption isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamics of the experiment were calculated for the present removal process. The effect of ultrasonication shows that the maximum removal percentage for RhB was found to be 92% and for tartrazine, it was found to be 86% at 60 min. Ultrasound-assisted adsorption and degradation revealed good results because of the formation of highly active ·H and ·OH radicals in the liquid through the decomposition of water molecules by the formation of hot spots under ultrasonic waves. Highest decolorization of 69% was obtained for RhB with anionic surfactant SDS and climax decolorization of tartrazine was acquired in case of CTAB as 60.5%. Analysis of real wastewater samples shows that the decolorization of RhB was found to be ~ 91% from well-water and ~ 95% removal of tartrazine was observed from submersible water on AC@CoFe2O4 nanocomposites. The decolorization best fitted (R2 < 0.988) with Langmuir model and value of Langmuir climax decolorization efficiency (Q0) was found to be 142.68 and 435.72 mg/g for RhB and tartrazine, respectively. Kinetic analysis revealed that adsorption follows pseudo-second-order equation. The dye-loaded AC@CoFe2O4 nanocomposites were recycled by 0.1 M HCl or NaOH and regenerated AC@CoFe2O4 nanocomposites were used up to five rounds with better adsorption efficiency.

Abstract
Wettability, a fundamental property of porous surface, occupies a pivotal position in the fields of enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation. In this review, wettability and the related applications are systematically expounded from the perspectives of hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity and super-wettability. Four common measurement methods are generalized and categorized into contact angle method and ratio method, and influencing factors (temperature, the type and layer charge of matrix, the species and structure of modifier) as well as their corresponding altering methods (inorganic, organic and thermal modification etc.) of wettability are overviewed. Different roles of wettability alteration in enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption as well as oil/water separation are summarized. Among these applications, firstly, the hydrophilic alteration plays a key role in recovery of the oil production process; secondly, hydrophobic circumstance of surface drives the organic pollutant adsorption more effectually; finally, super-wetting property of matrix ensures the high-efficient separation of oil from water. This review also identifies importance, challenges and future prospects of wettability alteration, and as a result, furnishes the essential guidance for selection and design inspiration of the wettability modification, and supports the further development of pore wettability application.

Abstract
Animal slurry storage is an important source of NH3 emission which has raised a high attention regarding its influence on air quality and environment health. There is an urgent need to develop an efficient, green and safe technology for reducing NH3 emission. This study introduced a novel method of reducing NH3 emission from dairy slurry storage using H2SO4 modified expanded vermiculite cover (H2SO4-VM1). Results showed that NH3 mitigation of 87% was achieved in the treatment of H2SO4-VM1 during 77 days of slurry storage, which could be mainly caused by conversion of free NH3 to NH4+ in acidified slurry surface and vermiculite layer, the cover barrier for gases emissions, NH4+ adsorption by vermiculite cover, and direct adsorption of free NH3 in the vermiculite layer. The NH3 mitigation of H2SO4-VM1 was comparable to that (90%) of the traditional method of H2SO4 acidification for slurry storage (H2SO4-AC1). The N2O emission, H2S emission, and H2SO4 consumption in H2SO-VM1 were 28, 93 and 39% lower than those in H2SO4-AC1, respectively. Economic cost calculated based on material input in H2SO-VM1 method was 0.40 USD m-2 slurry. It's suggested that H2SO4-VM1 can be a possible alternative for reducing NH3 emissions from animal slurry storage.

Abstract
A new self-assembled cellulose (SACS) containing multi-functional amine, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups was successfully obtained through etherification, cross-linking and grafting processes. Then, the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and Cd(II) onto SACS at pH values of 3, 5.7 and 7.5 was systematically investigated by batch experiments of single, sequential and binary systems, characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The presence of Cd(II) decreased the adsorption of SMZ because of hydrophilic site competition, while SMZ inversely increased the adsorption of Cd(II), which was attributed to bridging and especially to electrostatic shielding effects; moreover, both the inhibitory and synergistic effects were more obvious in the binary system and at a pH of 7.5. There was a dynamic balance between the inhibitory and synergistic effects that depended on the system, pH value and concentration ratio. DFT results further indicated that SMZ- more easily coordinated with Cd(II) at sulfonyl oxygen and nitrogen sites, and the cationic bridge of Cd(II) with SMZ- mainly occurred in the sequential system. Moreover, a complexation-decomplexation-complexation balance of SMZ- and Cd(II) probably occurred in the binary system.

Abstract
In this work, a facile oxidation strategy was developed to prepare novel tungsten disulfide/tungsten trioxide (WS2/WO3) heterostructures for adsorbing organic dyes efficiently by combining the hydrophilic property of WO3 and the superior dye affinity of WS2. The structural and elemental properties of the synthesized hybrid materials were systematically investigated, and the results demonstrated the retained flower-like morphology of the primitive WS2 and the successful introduction of WO3. Furthermore, surface properties such as a superior hydrophilicity and negative-charged potential were also demonstrated by a water contact angle characterization combined with a Zeta potential analysis. The performance of the obtained WS2/WO3 hybrid materials for removing Rhodamine B (RhB) from wastewater was evaluated. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the newly synthesized material could reach 237.1 mg/g. Besides, the adsorption isotherms were also simulated by a statistical physics monolayer model, which revealed the non-horizontal orientation of adsorbates and endothermic physical interaction. Finally, the adsorption mechanism and the recyclability revealed that the partial oxidation strategy could contribute to a higher adsorption capacity by modulating the surface properties and could be applied as a highly efficient strategy to design other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) heterostructures for removing organic dyes from wastewater.
