Biochar impact on chromium accumulation by rice through Fe microbial-induced redox transformation

Adding carbon sources to the substrates enhances Cr and Ni removal and mitigates greenhouse gas emissions in constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment pose challenges related to long-term operational efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale. This study investigated the impact of adding peat, humic acid, and biochar into the substrates of constructed wetlands and focused on Cr, and Ni removal, greenhouse gas emissions, and microbial communities in constructed wetlands. Biochar addition treatment achieved the highest removal efficiencies for total Cr (99.96%), Cr (VI) (100%), and total Ni (91.04%). Humic acid and biochar addition both significantly increased the heavy metal content in wetland plant Leersia hexandra and substrates of constructed wetlands. Further analysis of microbial community proportions by high-throughput sequencing revealed that biochar and humic acid treatments enhanced Cr and Ni removal efficiency by increasing the abundance of Bacteroidetes, Geobacter and Ascomycota. Humic acid addition treatment reduced CO2 emissions by decreasing the abundance of Bacteroidetes and increasing that of Basidiomycota. Peat treatment decreased CH4 emissions by reducing the abundance of the Bacteroidetes. Biochar treatment increased the abundance of the Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria as well as Basidiomycota, resulting in reduced N2O emissions. Biochar and humic acid treatments efficiently removed heavy metals from wastewater and mitigated greenhouse gas emissions in constructed wetlands by modifying the microbial communities.

The colonization of Penicillium oxalicum SL2 on rice root surface increased Pb interception capacity of iron plaque and decreased Pb uptake by roots

The exploration of microbial resources to reduce Pb accumulation in rice attracted great attention. In this study, we found Penicillium oxalicum SL2, a Pb-tolerant strain with good capability of dissolving phosphorus and stabilizing Pb in soil, was able to colonize on the root surface of rice seedlings without additional carbon sources, and promoted the secretion of metabolites related to amino acid metabolism, organic acid metabolism, signal transduction and other pathways in rhizosphere exudates, in which the secretion of oxalate increased by 47.7 %. However, P. oxalicum SL2 increased Fe(II) proportion and Fe availability on the root surface, resulting in iron plaque content decrease. Moreover, by converting root surface Pb from Pb-Fe state to PbC2O4 and Pb-P compounds, P. oxalicum SL2 increased Pb intercept capacity of iron plaque by 118.0 %. Furthermore, P. oxalicum SL2 regulated element distribution on the root surface, and reduced the relative content of Pb on the maturation zone of root tip, which was conducive to reducing Pb uptake by apoplastic pathway and the risk of Pb accumulation in root system. Our findings further revealed the interaction between P. oxalicum SL2 and rice root, providing a theoretical basis for the development and application of microbial agents in Pb-contaminated farmland.

Quantification of the effect of biochar application on heavy metals in paddy systems: Impact, mechanisms and future prospects

Biochar (BC) has shown great potential in remediating heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) contamination in paddy fields. Variation in feedstock sources, pyrolysis temperatures, modification methods, and application rates of BC can result in great changes in its effects on HM bioavailability and bioaccumulation in soil-rice systems and remediation mechanisms. Meanwhile, there is a lack of application guidelines for BC with specific properties and application rates when targeting rice fields contaminated with certain HMs. To elucidate this topic, this review focuses on i) the effects of feedstock type, pyrolysis temperature, and modification method on the properties of BC; ii) the changes in bioavailability and bioaccumulation of HMs in soil-rice systems applying BC with different feedstocks, pyrolysis temperatures, modification methods, and application rates; and iii) exploration of potential remediation mechanisms for applying BC to reduce the mobility and bioaccumulation of HMs in rice field systems. In general, the application of Fe/Mn modified organic waste (OW) derived BC for mid-temperature pyrolysis is still a well-optimized choice for the remediation of HM contamination in rice fields. From the viewpoint of remediation efficiency, the application rate of BC should be appropriately increased to immobilize Cd, Pb, and Cu in rice paddies, while the application rate of BC for immobilizing As should be <2.0 % (w/w). The mechanism of remediation of HM-contaminated rice fields by applying BC is mainly the direct adsorption of HMs by BC in soil pore water and the mediation of soil microenvironmental changes. In addition, the application of Fe/Mn modified BC induced the formation of iron plaque (IP) on the root surface of rice, which reduced the uptake of HM by the plant. Finally, this paper describes the prospects and challenges for the extension of various BCs for the remediation of HM contamination in paddy fields and makes some suggestions for future development.

Phosphorus-Loaded Biochar-Assisted Phytoremediation to Immobilize Cadmium, Chromium, and Lead in Soils

Soil contamination with heavy metals (HM) poses significant challenges to food security and public health, requiring the exploration of effective remediation strategies. This study aims to evaluate the remediation process of soils contaminated with Cd, Cr, and Pb using Lolium perenne assisted by four types of biochar: (i) activated coffee husk biochar (BAC), (ii) nonactivated biochar coffee husk (BSAC), (iii) activated sugar cane leaf biochar (BAA), and (iv) nonactivated biochar sugar cane leaf (BSAA). Biochar, loaded with phosphorus (P), was applied to soils contaminated with Cd, Cr, and Pb. L. perenne seedlings, averaging 2 cm in height, were planted. The bioavailability of P and heavy metals (HM) was monitored every 15 days until day 45, when the seedlings reached an average height of 25 cm. At day 45, plant harvesting was conducted and stems and roots were separated to determine metal concentrations in both plant parts and the soil. The study shows that the combined application of biochar and L. perenne positively influences the physicochemical properties of the soil, resulting in an elevation of pH and electrical conductivity (EC). The utilization of biochar contributes to an 11.6% enhancement in the retention of HM in plant organs. The achieved bioavailability of heavy metals in the soil was maintained at levels of less than 1 mg/kg. Notably, Pb exhibited a higher metal retention in plants, whereas Cd concentrations were comparatively lower. These findings indicate an increase in metal immobilization efficiencies when phytoremediation is assisted with P-loaded biochar. This comprehensive assessment highlights the potential of biochar-assisted phytoremediation as a promising approach for mitigating heavy metal contamination in soils.

Application of heavy metal immobilization in soil by biochar using machine learning

Biochar application is a promising strategy for the immobilization of heavy metal (HM)-contaminated soil, while it is always time-consuming and labor-intensive to clarify key influenced factors of soil HM immobilization by biochar. In this study, four machine learning algorithms, namely random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVR), Gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT), and Linear regression (LR) are employed to predict the HMimmobilization ratio. The RF was the best-performance ML model (Training R2 = 0.90, Testing R2 = 0.85, RMSE = 4.4, MAE = 2.18). The experiment verification based on the optimal RF model showed that the experiment verification was successful, as the results were comparable to the RF modeling results with a prediction error<20%. Shapley additive explanation and partial least squares path model method were used to identify the critical factors and direct and indirect effects of these features on the immobilization ratio. Furthermore, independent models of four HM (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) also achieved better model prediction performance. Feature importance and interactions relationship of influenced factors for individual HM immobilization ratio was clarified. This work can provide a new insight for HM immobilization in soils.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid mediated vanadium reduction and redistribution in vanadium-containing tailings

The microbially- and chemically-mediated redox process is critical in controlling the fate of vanadium (V) in tailing environment. Although the microbial reduction of V has been widely studied, the coupled biotic reduction mediated by beneficiation reagents and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. Herein, the reduction and redistribution of V in V-containing tailings and Fe/Mn oxide aggregates mediated by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid were explored. The dissolution of Fe-(hydr)oxides by oxalic acid promoted the microbe-mediated V release from solid-phase. After 48-day of reaction, the dissolved V concentrations in the bio-oxalic acid treatment reached maximum values of 1.72 ± 0.36 mg L^-1 and 0.42 ± 0.15 mg L^-1 in the tailing system and the aggregate system, respectively, significantly higher than those in control (0.63 ± 0.14 mg L^-1 and 0.08 ± 0.02 mg L^-1). As the electron donor, oxalic acid enhanced the electron transfer process of S. oneidensis MR-1 for V(V) reduction. The mineralogical characterization of final products indicates that S. oneidensis MR-1 and oxalic acid promoted solid-state conversion from V₂O₅ to NaV₆O₁₅. Collectively, this study demonstrates that microbe-mediated V release and redistribution in solid-phase were promoted by oxalic acid, suggesting that the role of organic agents for the V biogeochemical cycle in natural systems deserves greater attention.

Water Management Impacts on Chromium Behavior and Uptake by Rice in Paddy Soil with High Geological Background Values

Chromium (Cr) is an expression toxic metal and is seriously released into the soil environment due to its extensive use and mining. Basalt is an important Cr reservoir in the terrestrial environment. Cr in paddy soil can be enriched by chemical weathering. Therefore, basalt-derived paddy soils contain extremely high concentrations of Cr and can enter the human body through the food chain. However, the water management conditions' effect on the transformation of Cr in basalt-derived paddy soil with high geological background values was less recognized. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different water management treatments on the migration and transformation of Cr in a soil-rice system at different rice growth stages. Two water management treatments of continuous flooding (CF) and alternative wet and dry (AWD) and four different rice growth stages were set up. The results showed that AWD treatment significantly reduced the biomass of rice and promoted the absorption of Cr in rice plants. During the four growth periods, the root, stem and leaf of rice increased from 11.24-16.11 mg kg^-1, 0.66-1.56 mg kg^-1 and 0.48-2.29 mg kg^-1 to 12.43-22.60 mg kg^-1, 0.98-3.31 mg kg^-1 and 0.58-2.86 mg kg^-1, respectively. The Cr concentration in roots, stems and leaves of AWD treatment was 40%, 89% and 25% higher than CF treatment in the filling stage, respectively. The AWD treatment also facilitated the potential bioactive fractions conversion to the bioavailable fraction, compared with the CF treatment. In addition, the enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing bacteria with AWD treatment also provided electron iron for the mobilization of Cr, thus affecting the migration and transformation of Cr in the soil. We speculated that the reason for this phenomenon may be the bioavailability of Cr was affected by the biogeochemical cycle of iron under the influence of alternating redox. This indicates that AWD treatment may bring certain environmental risks in contaminated paddy soil with high geological background, and it is necessary to be aware of this risk when using water-saving irrigation to plant rice.

Recent advances in biochar amendments for immobilization of heavy metals in an agricultural ecosystem: A systematic review

Over the last several decades, extensive and inefficient use of contemporary technologies has resulted in substantial environmental pollution, predominantly caused by potentially hazardous elements (PTEs), like heavy metals that severely harm living species. To combat the presence of heavy metals (HMs) in the agrarian system, biochar becomes an attractive approach for stabilizing and limiting availability of HMs in soils due to its high surface area, porosity, pH, aromatic structure as well as several functional groups, which mostly rely on the feedstock and pyrolysis temperature. Additionally, agricultural waste-derived biochar is an effective management option to ensure carbon neutrality and circular economy while also addressing social and environmental concerns. Given these diverse parameters, the present systematic evaluation seeks to (i) ascertain the effectiveness of heavy metal immobilization by agro waste-derived biochar; (ii) examine the presence of biochar on soil physico-chemical, and thermal properties, along with microbial diversity; (iii) explore the underlying mechanisms responsible for the reduction in heavy metal concentration; and (iv) possibility of biochar implications to advance circular economy approach. The collection of more than 200 papers catalogues the immobilization efficiency of biochar in agricultural soil and its impacts on soil from multi-angle perspectives. The data gathered suggests that pristine biochar effectively reduced cationic heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni) and Cr mobilization and uptake by plants, whereas modified biochar effectively reduced As in soil and plant systems. However, the exact mechanism underlying is a complex biochar-soil interaction. In addition to successfully immobilizing heavy metals in the soil, the application of biochar improved soil fertility and increased agricultural productivity. However, the lack of knowledge on unfavorable impacts on the agricultural systems, along with discrepancies between the use of biochar and experimental conditions, impeded a thorough understanding on a deeper level.

Seed priming with nitric oxide and/or spermine mitigate the chromium toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings by improving the carbon-assimilation and minimising the oxidative damages

Chromium (Cr) is a serious environmental contaminant that drastically limited the crop yields. Nitric oxide (NO) and spermine (Spm) portrayal significance in improving the plant tolerance against abiotic stresses. Therefore, we investigate the protective efficacy of seed priming with NO (100μM) and/or Spm (0.01mM) in minimising the Cr-induced toxic effects in rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants. Our outcomes revealed that Cr alone treatments (100μM) notably reduced the seed germination rate, plant growth, photosynthetic apparatus, nutrients uptake and antioxidant defence system, but extra generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Interestingly, the combine applications of NO and Spm significantly reversed the Cr-induced toxic effects by reducing the Cr-accumulation, maintaining the nutrient balance, improving the germination indices, levels of photosynthetic pigments (chl a by 24.6%, chl b by 36.3%, chl (a+b ) by 57.2% and carotenoids by 79.4%), PSII, photosynthesis gas exchange parameters and total soluble sugar (74.9%) by improving antioxidative enzyme activities. As a result, NO+Spm lowered the accumulation of oxidative markers (H2 O2 by 93.9/70.4%, O2 ˙- by 86.3/69.9% and MDA by 97.2/73.7% in leaves/roots), electrolyte leakage (71.4% in leaves) and improved the plant growth traits. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that NO triggers Spm to minimise the Cr-accumulation and its adverse effects on rice plants. Additionally, combined treatments (NO+Spm) were more effective in minimising the Cr-induced toxic effects in comparison to NO and Spm alone treatments. Thus, co-exposure of NO and Spm may be utilised to boost rice tolerance under Cr stress conditions.

Contrasted speciation distribution of toxic metal(loid)s and microbial community structure in vanadium-titanium magnetite tailings under dry and wet disposal methods

Tailing disposal technologies such as dry and wet disposal methods have a profound effect on the ecosystem of mining areas. However, the chemical speciation of metal(loid)s and microbial community structure in tailings under different disposal methods are still poorly understood. Here we compared the bioavailable fraction of metal(loid)s and the microbial community in vanadium-titanium (V-Ti) magnetite tailing profiles derived from dry and wet stockpiled methods. In wet tailings, the bioavailability of Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, V, and Zn was higher than that in dry tailings as identified by BCR sequential extraction. Especially for Cu and Ni, the oxidizable fraction was the predominant fraction except the residual fraction, accounting for 37.2-59.0% and 23.2-36.6% of the total concentration in wet tailings, respectively. Based on 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing, totally 12 indicator bacterial taxa were detected in dry tailings against 68 in wet tailings. As the biomarkers in wet tailings, genera Sulfuricurvum, Geobacter, and Pseudomonas were expected to be applied to the transformation of metal(loid)s in the tailings. Our results emphasize the importance of dehydration treatment of tailings before stockpiling to minimize the environmental risks caused by toxic metal(loid)s, and provide insights into the engineering application of microbial technologies in V-Ti magnetite tailing area.

The effects of biochar and its applications in the microbial remediation of contaminated soil: A review

The amendment of biochar for soil bioremediation can improve soil conditions, influence soil microbial community, and achieve co-application of biochar-microbe to promote the removal of pollutants. This paper summarizes the positive effects of biochar on microorganisms, including acting as a shelter, providing nutrients, and improving soil conditions (soil aggregation, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and enzymatic activity). These effects will cause variations in microbial abundance, activity, and community structure. Biochar can act as an electron mediator to promote electron transfer in the process of microbial degradation. And the application of biochar in soil bioremediation is also introduced. Nevertheless, toxic substances carried by biochar that may threaten microbial community shouldn't be overlooked. With this review, we can better understand biochar's involvement in soil bioremediation, which will help us choose and modify biochar in a targeted manner for the desired purpose in practical applications.

Chromium toxicity induced oxidative damage in two rice cultivars and its mitigation through external supplementation of brassinosteroids and spermine

The chromium (Cr) induced phytotoxicity avowed the scientific community to develop stress mitigation strategies to restrain the Cr accumulation inside the food chain. Whereas, brassinosteroids (BRs), and spermine (SPM) are well-known growth-promoting phytohormones, which enhance the plants health, and resilient the toxic effects under stress conditions. Until now, their interactive role against Cr-mitigation is poorly known. Hence, we conducted the hydroponic experiment to perceive the behavior of seed primed with BRs, or/and SPM treatment against Cr disclosure in two different rice cultivars (CY927; sensitive, YLY689; tolerant). Our findings delineated that BRs (0.01 μM), or/and SPM (0.01 mM) remarkably alleviated Cr-induced phytotoxicity by improving the seed germination ratio, chlorophyll pigments, PSII system, total soluble sugar, and minimizing the MDA contents level, ROS extra generation, and electrolyte leakage through restricting the Cr accretion in roots, and shoots of both rice cultivars under Cr stress. Additionally, the BRs, or/and SPM modulated the antioxidant enzyme, and non-enzyme activities to reduce the Cr-induced cellular oxidative damage as well as maintained the ionic hemostasis in both rice cultivars, especially in YLY689. Concisely, enhanced the plants biomass and growth. Overall, our outcomes revealed that BRs and SPM interact positively to alleviate the Cr-induced damages in rice seedlings on the above-mentioned indices, and combine treatment is much more efficient than solely. Moreover, the effect of BRs, or/and SPM was more obvious in YLY689 than CY927 to hamper the oxidative stress, and boost the antioxidant capacity.

Influence of straw-derived humic acid-like substance on the availability of Cd/As in paddy soil and their accumulation in rice grain

Humic acid amendments have been widely advocated for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil. However, the impacts of straw-derived humic acid-like substances on the remediation of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) co-contaminated paddy soil remain unclear and the potential mechanism required clarification. In this study, we employed a pot experiment and chose a straw-derived humic acid-like substance (BFA) as the amendment with four doses to investigate how BFA affects the availability of Cd and As in soil and their accumulation in rice. The results showed that grain Cd decreased by 25.65-36.03%, while there was no significant change in total As (TAs) with the addition of BFA. The contents of DCB-Fe, DCB-As and DCB-Cd on the root surface decreased by 6.07-40.54% during the whole growth stage. The addition of BFA significantly decreased the pe + pH and enhanced the transformation of crystalline iron oxides (Fed) into amorphous forms (Feo) in the soil. The CaCl₂-extractable Cd decreased and the KH₂PO₄-extractable As increased with the decrease in pe + pH and Fed and the relative increase in Feo. The correlation analysis showed that the decrease in availability of Cd and translocation factor of Cd effectively decreased the grain Cd and the decrease in DCB-Cd may also contribute to decreasing the uptake of Cd by rice. However, the increase in As of roots and shoots might play key roles in restricting the transport of As to rice grains. Consequently, the addition of BFA could effectively reduce the Cd accumulation in rice under flooding conditions, while no risk of As accumulation in rice grain was observed. The present work provides a new perspective for the application of straw-derived humic acid-like substances as amendments on Cd-As co-contaminated soils, which should be advocated as an eco-friendly, economical and effective soil amendment in the future.

Precision environmental health monitoring by longitudinal exposome and multi-omics profiling

Conventional environmental health studies have primarily focused on limited environmental stressors at the population level, which lacks the power to dissect the complexity and heterogeneity of individualized environmental exposures. Here, as a pilot case study, we integrated deep-profiled longitudinal personal exposome and internal multi-omics to systematically investigate how the exposome shapes a single individual's phenome. We annotated thousands of chemical and biological components in the personal exposome cloud and found they were significantly correlated with thousands of internal biomolecules, which was further cross-validated using corresponding clinical data. Our results showed that agrochemicals and fungi predominated in the highly diverse and dynamic personal exposome, and the biomolecules and pathways related to the individual's immune system, kidney, and liver were highly associated with the personal external exposome. Overall, this data-driven longitudinal monitoring study shows the potential dynamic interactions between the personal exposome and internal multi-omics, as well as the impact of the exposome on precision health by producing abundant testable hypotheses.

Co-application of biochar and organic fertilizer promotes the yield and quality of red pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus) by improving soil properties

This study evaluated the combined impact of biochar and organic fertilizer on the soil properties, yield and quality of red pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus). A two-year (2019 and 2020) field experiment was conducted to study the effects of 3 rates of biochar (with carbon fertilizer ratios of 0%, 3%, and 6% w/w) combined with 3 levels of organic fertilizer (22.5, 45, and 90 t ha^-1) on soil properties, along with red pitaya yield and quality. The results showed that soil pH, total organic carbon, available nutrients (N, P, and K), the yield and qualities (reduced sugar, soluble protein, and soluble solid) of red pitaya increased with the application of organic fertilizer compared with no application of biochar and organic fertilizer (CK treatment), but the combined application of biochar and organic fertilizer was more effective than their sole application. Furthermore, a medium dose of organic fertilizer combined with 3% biochar (C3F2 treatment) and a high dose of organic fertilizer combined with 3% biochar (C3F3 treatment) had the highest yields of red pitaya in 2019 and 2020. However, an application of 6% biochar with a low dose of organic fertilizer treatment (C6F1) had the highest profit in 2020, not the C3F3 treatment. The highest profits were observed in the C3F2 (71.0 × 10³ RMB·t^-1) and C6F1 (51.2 × 10³ RMB·t^-1) treatments. From the point of view of red pitaya yield and economic benefits, 3% biochar +45 t ha^-1 organic fertilizer was the recommended combination that showed the best synergistic effect.

Effect of rapeseed straw-derived biochar on soil bacterial community structure at tillering stage of Oryza Sativa

Numerous studies have reported the dynamics of microbes when biochar was applied, whereas the information on the alterations of bacterial community after application of rapeseed straw-derived biochar is limited. A pot experiment with two rapeseed straw-derived biochar application treatments (with biochar application at the rate of 200 g/pot, C1) and (without biochar application, 0 g/pot, C0) was conducted. No significant differences were observed in the number of operational taxonomic units, observed species, Shannon index, Simpson index, Chao1, ACE, and phylogenetic diversity whole tree between the C1 and C0 treatments. Taxonomic analysis at the genus level showed that the abundances of Gracilibacter, Lentimicrobium, unidentified Rikenellaceae, Hydrogenophaga, and Bacillus were higher in the C1 compared to the C0 treatment, while Candidatus Solibacter, Candidatus Koribacter, and Lutispora abundances were found to be higher abundant in the C0 compared to the C1 treatment. Obvious clusters were observed between the C1 and C0 in both principal component analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling. These results indicate that soil bacterial community was altered after rapeseed straw-derived biochar was applied.

Biochar promotes arsenic sequestration on iron plaques and cell walls in rice roots

The iron (Fe) cycle in the rice-soil system affects arsenic (As) uptake by rice. The effect of Fe on As uptake can be influenced by the addition of biochar, but has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, the effects of maize straw-derived biochar (MB) on Fe and As translocation were determined by analysing the Fe and As concentrations in pore water, dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) extracts, and rice plants. As-contaminated soils were supplemented with 0 or 1% biochar and 0 or 90 mg kg^-1 P, and rice plants were grown for 70 d. Results indicated that biochar addition increased the concentrations of Fe and As in pore water, while P did not affect them. Additionally, biochar promoted the accumulation of Fe and As in roots. However, the rice biomass increased by 28% upon biochar addition, indicating that the rice plants became more tolerant to As toxicity with biochar. Specifically, biochar increased the root triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) reductive intensity, reduced the root H₂O₂ concentration, and promoted iron plaque (IP) formation. Moreover, the positive correlation between IP/DCB-extractable As and crystalline Fe on the rice root surface indicated that crystalline Fe appeared to be the determinant species of IP and played a central role in As segregation. In addition, biochar increased both crystalline Fe formation on the root surface and the Fe content in the cell wall, which enhanced As sequestration. Overall, rice could effectively tolerate As stress under biochar treatment since As could be retained on the root surface and root cell wall with MB.

(Im)mobilization of arsenic, chromium, and nickel in soils via biochar: A meta-analysis

Biochar is a promising immobilizing agent of trace elements (TEs) in contaminated soils. However, several contradictory results have been reported regarding the potential of biochar to immobilize arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni) in contaminated soils. We conducted a meta-analysis on the published papers since 2006 until 2019 to examine the effects of biochar on the chemical (im)mobilization of As, Cr, and Ni in contaminated soils and to elucidate the major factors that control their interactions with biochar in soil. We synthesized 48 individual papers comprised of a total of 9351 pairwise comparisons and used the statistical tool of Cohen's d as an appropriate effect size for the comparison between means. We found that the application of biochar often increased the As mobilization in soils. Important variables that modulated the biochar effects on As mobilization in soil were pyrolysis temperature and time (ranging between 8 and 16 times when T > 450 °C and t > 1hr), organic matter (7-16 times when SOM<3%) and further site conditions. In contrast to As, biochar efficiently immobilized Cr and Ni in contaminated soils. The extent of the Cr and Ni immobilization was determined by the feedstock (Cr: 7-18 times for agricultural residue-derived biochar; Ni: 13-32 times for woody biomass-derived biochar). Our meta-analysis provides a compilation on the potential of different types of biochar to reduce/increase the mobilization of As, Cr, and Ni in various soils and under different experimental conditions. This study provides important insights on factors that affect biochar's efficiency for the (im)mobilization of As, Cr, and Ni in contaminated soils. While biochar effectively immobilizes Cr and Ni, a proper management of As-polluted soils with pristine biochar is still challenging. This limitation might be overcome by modification of biochar surfaces to exhibit higher surface area and functionality and active sites for surface complexation with TEs.

The Exposome in the Era of the Quantified Self

Human health is regulated by complex interactions among the genome, the microbiome, and the environment. While extensive research has been conducted on the human genome and microbiome, little is known about the human exposome. The exposome comprises the totality of chemical, biological, and physical exposures that individuals encounter over their lifetimes. Traditional environmental and biological monitoring only targets specific substances, whereas exposomic approaches identify and quantify thousands of substances simultaneously using nontargeted high-throughput and high-resolution analyses. The quantified self (QS) aims at enhancing our understanding of human health and disease through self-tracking. QS measurements are critical in exposome research, as external exposures impact an individual's health, behavior, and biology. This review discusses both the achievements and the shortcomings of current research and methodologies on the QS and the exposome and proposes future research directions.

Analysis of the long-term effectiveness of biochar immobilization remediation on heavy metal contaminated soil and the potential environmental factors weakening the remediation effect: A review

Currently, the research and application of biochar in the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil has become a hotspot, especially regarding the remediation of agricultural land. Biochar has been proved to be effective in reducing the content of available heavy metals in the soil as well as the heavy metals in plants. However, the long-term effectiveness of biochar immobilization has not been widely studied. In this review, retrospective search was carried out on the published literature results concerning remediation effects of biochar on different areas of heavy metal contaminated soil in the recent years, its application in field remediation (several years), and some potential abiotic and biotic factors that may weaken the immobilization effects of biochar. This results indicate that: (1) biochar is widely used in the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil in different areas and has excellent immobilization effect. (2) Most of the research demonstrate that the immobilization effect of biochar is effective for 2-3 years or according to few results even for 5 years. However, there have been various reports claiming that the immobilization effect of biochar decreases with time. (3) Abiotic factors such as acid rain, flooded environment, changes in soil condition (pH, redox and dissolved organic matter) and changes in biochar (Cl^- and alkali leaching) can significantly weaken the immobilization effect of biochar. (4) Biotic factors such as plant roots, earthworms and soil microorganisms can also significantly reduce the immobilization effect of biochar. Therefore, field experiments having longer time span with biochar need to be further carried out, and the developmental research of modified biochar with a more stable immobilization effect also needs further attention.

Root morphological response of six peanut cultivars to chromium (VI) toxicity

We investigated the hypothesis that root morphology plays a crucial role in the variation in chromium (Cr) accumulation among peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivars, using the relationship between Cr accumulation and morphological characteristics of six peanut cultivars determined under 0, 10, 25, 75, and 100 μmol L^-1 Cr(VI) via hydroponic experiment. Significant variations were observed in Cr accumulation and root morphological parameters among peanut cultivars at the five Cr levels. The Cr concentrations in plants exhibited 1.72-, 4.67-, 1.81-, and 2.91-fold variations within cultivars for 10, 25, 75, and 100 μmol L^-1 Cr treatments, respectively. Positive correlations were found for total Cr in plants with total root length (RL), root surface area (SA), and root volume (RV). Negative correlations were also observed between the percentages of Cr in shoots and specific root length. These results suggest that root system morphology may partly explain the variation in Cr accumulation among cultivars. Cultivars with greater RL, SA, and RV showed higher capability for Cr accumulation.
