Abstract
To address the growing concerns regarding severe water pollution, effective and environmentally friendly adsorbents must be identified. In this study, we prepared hydroxyapatite (HAp, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) as an eco-friendly absorbent via simple precipitation and obtained rod- (r-HAp) and plate-shaped HAp (p-HAp). The approach to obtaining p-HAp involved a low pH titration rate, promoting growth along the c-axis due to the adsorption of OH- on the (110) facet. Conversely, r-HAp was obtained by maintaining a high concentration of OH- during the initial stage through rapid pH titration, leading to a stronger restrictive effect on the growth of positively charged a(b)-planes. p-HAp demonstrated superior adsorption capacity, removing Pb through dissolution and recrystallization, achieving an impressive 625 mg/g within a 60 min reaction time compared to r-HAp. Our findings afford insights into the Pb removal mechanisms of HAp with different morphologies and can aid in the development of water purification strategies against heavy metal contamination.

Abstract
Carbon materials play a crucial role in promoting the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle in heterogeneous Fenton reactions. However, the electron transfer efficiency between carbon and iron is typically low. In this study, we prepared a novel heterogeneous Fenton catalyst, humboldtine/hydrothermal carbon (Hum/HTC), using a one-step hydrothermal method and achieved about 100 % reduction in Fe(III) during synthesis. Moreover, the HTC continuously provided electrons to promote Fe(II) regeneration during the Fenton reaction. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments showed that Hum/HTC completely oxidized As(III) to As(V) via free radical and non-free radical pathways. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analyses revealed that monodentate mononuclear (MM) and bidentate binuclear (BB) structures were the dominant bonding methods for As(V) immobilization. 40 %Hum/HTC exhibited a maximum As(III) adsorption capacity of 167 mg/g, which was higher than that of most reported adsorbents. This study provides a novel strategy for the efficient reduction of Fe(III) during catalyst synthesis and demonstrates that HTC can continuously accelerate Fe(II) regeneration in heterogeneous Fenton reactions.

Abstract
Salix psammophila wood flour /polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel composite membrane (SPPM) with high adsorption capacity and good cycle adsorption performance was prepared by wet spinning technology. The SPPM was characterised by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), specific surface area test (BET), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that the surface of SPPM is rough and porous, with good pore structure and thermal stability, and mercury ions (Hg(II)) have been successfully adsorbed on SPPM. At the same time, the effects of adsorption conditions (Hg(II) initial concentration, pH, adsorption time, and temperature) on the adsorption performance of SPPM were studied. Results from the adsorption experiment showed that the adsorption capacity of SPPM for Hg(II) can reach 426 mg/g. After four adsorption and desorption experiments, the adsorption capacity can reach 375 mg/g, which indicates that SPPM has good cycle adsorption performance. The adsorption kinetics was better described by the Pseudo-second-order kinetic, and their adsorption isotherms were fitted for the Langmuir model. The obtained results showed that SPPM is an available, economical adsorbent and was found suitable for removing Hg(II) from an aqueous solution.

Abstract
The pollution problem of oxytetracycline (OTC) from wastewater becomes more serious, so an efficient, economical, and green adsorption material is urgently explored. In this study, the multilayer porous biochar (OBC) was prepared by coupling carbon nanotubes with iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized by Aquabacterium sp. XL4 to modify corncobs under medium temperature (600 °C) conditions. The adsorption capacity of OBC could reach 72.59 mg g-1 after preparation and operation parameters were optimized. In addition, various adsorption models suggested that OTC removal resulted from the combined effect of chemisorption, multilayer interaction, and disordered diffusion. Meanwhile, the OBC was fully characterized and exhibited a large specific surface area (237.51 m2 g-1), abundant functional groups, stable crystal structure, high graphitization, and mild magnetic properties (0.8 emu g-1). The OTC removal mechanisms mainly included electrostatic interactions, ligand exchange, π-π bonding reactions, hydrogen bonds, and complexation. pH and coexistence substance experiments revealed that the OBC possesses a wide pH adaptation range and excellent anti-interference ability. Finally, the safety and reusability of OBC were confirmed by repeated experiments. In summary, OBC as a biosynthetic material shows considerable potential for application in the field of purifying new pollution from wastewater.

Dansyl-labelled cellulose as dual-functional adsorbents for elimination and detection of mercury in aqueous solution via aggregation-induced emission. JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2023; 338:117773. Abstract
Dansyl chloride fluorophore exhibits typical aggregation induced fluorescence emission behavior in acetone/water solution. To realize the integration of detective and adsorptive functions, dansyl chloride is covalently immobilized on cellulose substrate to fabricate an efficient adsorbent for mercury ions in water. The as-prepared material exhibits excellent fluorescence sensing performance exclusively for Hg (II) with the presence of other metal ions. A sensitive and selective fluorescence quenching across the concentration range of 0.1-8.0 mg/L is observed with a detection limit of 8.33 × 10-9 M as a result of the inhibition of aggregation induced emission caused by the coordination between adsorbent and Hg (II). Besides, the adsorption properties for Hg (II) including the influence of initial concentration and contact time are investigated. Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics are demonstrated to fit well with the adsorption experiment for the uptake of Hg (II) by the functionalized adsorbent, also, intraparticle diffusion kinetic model is proved to aptly describe the Hg (II) removal in aqueous solution. In addition, the recognition mechanism is considered to originate from the Hg (II) triggered structural reversals of naphthalene ring units which are verified by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation. Moreover, the synthesis method used in this work also provides a strategy for the sensing application of organic sensor molecules with AIE properties in which the aggregated behavior could be appropriately realized.

Abstract
Simultaneous elimination of As(III) and Pb(II) from wastewater is still a great challenge. In this work, an iron-sulfur codoped biochar (Fe/S-BC) was successfully fabricated in a simplified way and was applied to the remediate the co-pollution of As(III) and Pb(II). The positive enthalpy indicated that the adsorption in As-Pb co-pollution was an endothermic reaction. The mechanism of As(III) removal could be illustrated by surface complexation, oxidation and precipitation. In addition to precipitation and complexation, the elimination mechanism of Pb(II) also contained ion exchange and electrostatic interactions. Competitive and synergistic effects existed simultaneously in the co-contamination system. The suppression of As(III) was ascribed to competitive complexation of the two metals on Fe/S-BC, while the synergy of Pb(II) was attributed to the formation of the PbFe2(AsO4)2(OH)2. Batch experiments revealed that Fe/S-BC had outstanding ability to remove As(III) and Pb(II), regardless of pH dependency and interference by various coexisting ions. The maximum adsorption capacities of the Fe/S-BC for As(III) and Pb(II) were 91.2 mg/g and 631.7 mg/g, respectively. Fe/S-BC could be treated as a novel candidate for the elimination of As(III)-Pb(II) combined pollution.

Abstract
The remediation of heavy metal deserves to be on the agenda, with the adsorbent design bearing the brunt of it. In this study, the molecule (4, 6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine, DMP) containing thiol (-SH) and amino (-NH2) functional groups was grafted onto Uio-66-NH2, and a composite metal-organic framework nanomaterial (Zr(NH2)-DMP) was synthesized via a facile post-modification scheme. The morphological characteristics and structural features of the modified adsorbent were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDS, BET, and XPS. The characterization results verified that the post-modification scheme was successfully achieved. The adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the removal performance of the Zr(NH2)-DMP towards Hg2+ under different influencing parameters. The maximum adsorption capacity of 389.4 mg/g was obtained, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 30 min at pH 6 at room temperature. Adsorption thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. The Zr(NH2)-DMP exhibited excellent selectivity for Hg2+, and also has the potential to remove Cu2+, Fe2+, and Zn2+ ions. The introduction of Cl- inhibited the removal of Hg2+ due to the formation of mercuric chlorides (removal efficiency reduced from 97.8 to 95.6%). The removal efficiency of up to 86.7% was obtained after four cycles. The Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second kinetic were more suitable for fitting the adsorption process of Hg2+ by Zr(NH2)-DMP. The main removal mechanism could be attributed to the chelation between Hg2+ (soft acid) and nitrogen/sulfur (soft base) elements. These findings convinced that the successful synthesis of Zr(NH2)-DMP provides an option for Hg2+ removal from wastewater.

Abstract
The pollution of Hg(II) and Ag(I) to water system exerts hazardous effect to aquatic ecosystem and public security. Simple strategy for constructing adsorbents to efficient remove them is greatly desired. Thus, a series of thiol and amino groups containing bifunctional polysilsesquioxanes (ASPSS) microspheres with adjustable porous structure and functional group content were synthesized by one-step feasible sol-gel process. The adsorption behavior and mechanism of ASPSS microspheres toward Hg(II) and Ag(I) was thoroughly determined. The maximum adsorption capacity of ASPSS for Hg(II) and Ag(I) are 4.32 and 3.86 mmol·g-1 under 25 ℃. The as-prepared ASPSS microspheres can 100% selectively capture Hg(II) with the coexisting of Mn(II), Co(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), Fe(III). And they can 100% adsorb Ag(I) with the presence of Cd(II), Pb(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II). Moreover, the ASPSS microspheres exhibit good removal efficiency for Hg(II) and Ag(I) from simulated industrial wastewater with the coexistence of multiple pollutants. Adsorption mechanism suggests the adsorption for Hg(II) and Ag(I) is the synergistic coordination effect of amino and thiol groups. The excellent adsorption selectivity for Hg(II) and Ag(I) is attributed to the super binding ability of these functional group. ASPSS microspheres also exhibit good regeneration ability and could be reused for removing Hg (II) and Ag(I) from aqueous solution with practical value.

Abstract
The challenge for simultaneous detection and removal of Hg2+ is the design of bifunctional materials bearing abundant accessible chelating sites with high affinity. Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are attracting more and more attention as potential bifunctional materials for Hg2+ detection due to their large specific surface area, ordered pores, and abundant chelating sites. Here, a new luminous S,N-rich COFBTT-AMPD based on hydrophilic block unit of 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AMPD) was constructed, which improved the solubility and affinity for Hg2+ greatly. Another S-rich fused-ring unit of benzotrithiophene tricarbalaldehyde (BTT) enhanced the conjugation of COFBTT-AMPD, and the methyl-rich chains block unit of AMPD effectively suppressed the aggregation-caused quenching. Thus, the COFBTT-AMPD emitted strong fluorescence at 546 nm in liquid and solid as well as different solvent with a wide pH range, which was used for the visual detection and removal of Hg2+ (detection limit: 2.6 nM, linear range: 8.6 × 10-3-20 μM, monolayer adsorption capacity: 476.19 mg g-1) successfully. COFBTT-AMPD-based fabric and light-emitting diode coatings were further constructed to realize the visual detection of Hg2+ vapor. The results reveal the potential of S,N-rich luminous COFBTT-AMPD for Hg2+ detection and remediation in the environment.

Abstract
Water supplies contaminated with heavy metals are a worldwide concern. MXenes have properties that make them attractive for the removal of metal ions from water. This work presents a simple one-step method of Ti3C2Tx carboxylation that involves the use of a chelating agent with a linear structure, providing strong carboxylic acid groups with high mobility. The carboxylation decreases the zeta-potential of Ti3C2Tx by ~16 to ~18 mV over a pH range of 2.0-8.5 and improves Ti3C2Tx stability in the presence of molecular oxygen. pH in the range of 2-6 has a negligible effect on the adsorption capacity of Ti3C2Tx and COOH-Ti3C2Tx. Compared to Ti3C2Tx, COOH-Ti3C2Tx has a slightly higher and much faster mercury uptake, and the concentration of mercury ions leached out from COOH-Ti3C2Tx is lower. For both Ti3C2Tx and COOH-Ti3C2Tx, the leached mercury ion concentration is far below the U.S.-EPA maximum level. At an initial Hg2+ concentration of 50 ppm and pH of 6, COOH-Ti3C2Tx has the equilibrium adsorption capacity of 499.7 mg/g and removes 95% of Hg2+ in less than 1 min. Moreover, it has an equilibrium time of 5 min, which is significantly shorter than that of Ti3C2Tx (~ 60 min). Finally, its mercury-ion uptake capacity is higher than commercially available adsorbents reported in the literature. Its mercury removal is mainly via chemisorption and monolayer adsorption.

Abstract
Although Tween-20 was used as an important catalyst to increase chalcopyrite bioleaching rate by acidophiles, the effect of Tween-20 on initial adhesion and biofilm development of acidophiles on chalcopyrite has not been explored until now. Herein, the role of Tween-20 in early attachment behaviors and biofilm development by Acidianus manzaensis strain YN-25 were investigated by adhesion experiments, adhesion force measurement, visualization of biofilm assays and a series of analyses including extended Derjaguin Landau Verwey Overbeek (DLVO) theory, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The bacterial adhesion experiments showed that 2 mg/L of Tween-20 increased the adhesion percentage (by 8%) of A. manzaensis YN-25. Tween-20 could promote the early adhesion of A. manzaensis YN-25 by changing the Lewis acid-base interaction and electrostatic force to increase total interaction energy and adhesion force. Besides, the functional groups on the surface of cells (carboxyl, hydroxyl and amino functional groups) contributed to the adhesion of A. manzaensis YN-25 on chalcopyrite. Furthermore, the promotion of biofilm formation by Tween-20 was mainly attributed to the reduction of S0 passivation layer formation and complexing more Fe3+ on chalcopyrite surface, contributing to the erosion of chalcopyrite and creating more corrosion pits. Live/dead staining showed low live/dead ratio (ranged from 0.35 to 1.32) during the biofilm development process. This report offers a better understanding of the effects of Tween-20 on attachment and biofilm development of acidophilic microorganisms and would lay a theoretical foundation for the better application of catalyst in bioleaching.

Abstract
For effective removal of cadmium (II) (Cd(II)) from polluted water, a magnetic adsorbent of Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell microspheres modified with methyl-protected thiol groups (Fe3O4@SiO2-SH-Protected) was synthesized and characterized by scanning electron, transmission electron, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies, as well as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. Characterization results showed that thiol groups on the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2 material were protected to avoid disulfide formation. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted by varying the contact time, initial pH, solid-liquid ratio, temperature, Cd(II) concentrations, and interfering cations. Fe3O4@SiO2-SH-Protected material exhibited much higher adsorption capacity than Unprotected forms and other adsorbents due to methyl group protection. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir fitting was 27.5 mg·g-1 (pH 7, 25 °C), and the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, and adsorption mainly dominated by film diffusion processes. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process was a spontaneous, endothermic, and positive entropic process. Cd(II)-loaded on the adsorbent was easily desorbed with 0.1 M HCl and the adsorbent stable in 0.1 M HCl for long times, showing good reusability and stability.
