Zn-based metal organic framework-covalent organic framework composites for trace lead extraction and fluorescence detection of TNP

Preparation of MIL-101(Cr)-NH2@TAPB-DVA-COF based membrane solid-phase extraction for efficient enrichment and sensitive determination of trace aromatic disinfection by-products in juice drinks

Aromatic disinfection by-products (DBPs) have garnered considerable interest in recent years for their potential carcinogenicity. However, efficient separation and enrichment of DBPs in complex samples is a challenge due to the extremely low content of aromatic DBPs and the complexity of sample matrices. In this study, a MIL-101(Cr)-NH2@TAPB-DVA-COF hybrid material was prepared as the enrichment medium of membrane solid-phase extraction (M-SPE) to efficiently determine trace emerging aromatic DBPs. This medium exhibited excellent enrichment capacity and selectivity for aromatic DBPs because of the strong hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions. An efficient analytical method for five aromatic DBPs in juice drinks was successfully established by use of this hybrid material as the enrichment medium for M-SPE in combination with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The limits of detection of the established method were from 0.50 to 3.00 ng/L. Moreover, the method had been successfully used in real juice drinks to determine trace five aromatic DBPs with the spiked recoveries ranging from 84.1% to 125%. The method possessed high analytical sensitivity and accuracy for these five aromatic DBPs in juice drinks with the aid of the efficient M-SPE technology proposed.

Electropolymerization of Preferred-Oriented Conjugated Microporous Polymer Films for Enhanced Fluorescent Sensing

High-quality conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) films with orientation and controlled structure are extremely desired for applications. Here, we report the effective construction of CMP 3D composite films (pZn/PTPCz) with a controlled porosity structure and preferred orientation using the template-assisted electropolymerization (EP) approach for the first time. The structure of pZn/PTPCz composite thin films and nitrophenol sensing performance were thoroughly studied. When compared to the control CMP film made on flat indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates, the as-prepared pZn/PTPCz composite films showed significantly enhanced fluorescent intensity and much better sensing performance for the model explosive. This was attributed to the metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) of porous nanostructured zinc (pZn) and the additional macroporosity of the pZn/PTPCz composite films. This work provides a feasible approach for creating oriented 3D CMP-based thin films for advanced applications.

AIE/AEE tripodal PEGyl-melphalan supramolecules and detection of trinitrophenol in water

Herein, the design of a novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE) supramolecular fluorescence sensor (TA-PEGn) based on a tridentate melphalan derivative and three different molecular weight PEGs is presented. The three TA-PEGn sensors could self-assemble into a supramolecular system in water and show sensitive and selective responses toward trinitrophenol.

A novel deep eutectic solvent modified magnetic covalent organic framework for the selective separation and determination of trace copper ion in medicinal plants and environmental samples

BACKGROUND

Pretreatment techniques should be introduced before metal ion determination because there is very low content of heavy metals in Chinese medicinal plants and environmental samples. Magnetic dispersive micro solid phase extraction (MDMSPE) has been widely used for the separation and adsorption of heavy metal pollutants in medicinal plants and environmental samples. However, the majority of MDMSPE adsorbents have certain drawbacks, including low selectivity, poor anti-interference ability, and small adsorption capacity. Therefore, modifying currently available adsorption materials has gained attention in research.

RESULTS

In this study, a novel adsorbent MCOF-DES based on a magnetic covalent organic framework (MCOF) modified by a new deep eutectic solvent (DES) was synthesized for the first time and used as an adsorbent of MDMSPE. The MDMSPE was combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for selective separation, enrichment, and accurate determination of trace copper ion (Cu2+) in medicinal plants and environmental samples. Various characterization results show the successful preparation of new MCOF-DES. Under the optimal conditions, the enrichment factor (EF) of Cu2+ was 30, the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.16 μg L-1, and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 0.54 μg L-1. The results for the determination of Cu2+ were highly consistent with those of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), which verified the accuracy and reliability of the method.

SIGNIFICANCE

The established method based on a new adsorption material MCOF-DES has achieved the selective separation and determination of trace Cu2+ in medicinal and edible homologous medicinal materials (Phyllanthus emblica Linn.) and environmental samples (soil and water), which provides a promising, selective, and sensitive approach for the determination of trace Cu2+ in other real samples.

Laser-Driven Rapid Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Investigation of UV-NIR Optical Absorption, Luminescence, Photocatalytic Degradation, and Gas and Ion Adsorption Properties

In this study, we designed a platform based on a laser-driven approach for fast, efficient, and controllable MOF synthesis. The laser irradiation method was performed for the first time to synthesize Zn-based MOFs in record production time (approximately one hour) compared to all known MOF production methods with comparable morphology. In addition to well-known structural properties, we revealed that the obtained ZnMOFs have a novel optical response, including photoluminescence behavior in the visible range with nanosecond relaxation time, which is also supported by first-principles calculations. Additionally, photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue with ZnMOF was achieved, degrading the 10 ppm methylene blue (MB) solution 83% during 1 min of irradiation time. The application of laser technology can inspire the development of a novel and competent platform for a fast MOF fabrication process and extend the possible applications of MOFs to miniaturized optoelectronic and photonic devices.

Interfacial chemistries in metal-organic framework (MOF)/covalent-organic framework (COF) hybrids

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been attracting tremendous attention in various applications due to their unique structural properties. Recent interest has been focused on their combination as hybrids to enable the engineering of new classes of frameworks with complementary properties. This review gives a comprehensive summary on the interfacial chemistries in MOF/COF hybrids, which play critical roles in their hybridization. The challenges and perspectives in the field of MOF/COF hybrids are also provided to inspire more efforts in diversifying this hybrid family and their cross-disciplinary applications.

The covalent organic framework based nylon membrane extraction coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS for highly efficiency determination of hexabromocyclododecanes in environmental water

Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) have given their adverse effects on environment and human health, and highly sensitive analysis of HBCDs in water is urgent. In this study, a new method for the determination of trace HBCDs in water was established by covalent organic framework (COF) based nylon membrane extraction (ME) coupled with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The COF had been self-assembled onto the nylon membrane in a gentle strategy to fabricate COF nylon membrane. Several important ME parameters including the dosage of COF, pH, eluent condition and salinity were systematically investigated. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.011-0.014 and 0.038-0.047 ng/L for three HBCDs, respectively. The linear ranges were from 0.04 to 20 ng/L, and the relative standard deviations were 5.7-17.8 % (intra-day) and 5.2-14.1 % (inter-day). In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations on adsorption energy proved that the introduction of halogen bond (XB) made a key contribution to high extraction efficiency and excellent selectivity of COF nylon membrane for HBCDs. The 500 mL of samples, including tap water and reservoir water, could be extracted only in 23 min. The established method presented highly sensitive for ultra-trace analysis of HBCDs in environmental water.

Preparation of Eco-Friendly Chelating Resins and Their Applications for Water Treatment

In the present study, two chelating resins were prepared and used for simultaneous adsorption of toxic metal ions, i.e., Cr³⁺, Mn²⁺, Fe³⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺ (M^X+). In the first step, chelating resins were prepared starting with styrene-divinylbenzene resin, a strong basic anion exchanger Amberlite IRA 402(Cl^-) with two chelating agents, i.e., tartrazine (TAR) and amido black 10B (AB 10B). Key parameters such as contact time, pH, initial concentration, and stability were evaluated for the obtained chelating resins (IRA 402/TAR and IRA 402/AB 10B). The obtained chelating resins show excellent stability in 2M HCl, 2M NaOH, and also in ethanol (EtOH) medium. The stability of the chelating resins decreased when the combined mixture (2M HCl:EtOH = 2:1) was added. The above-mentioned aspect was more evident for IRA 402/TAR compared to IRA 402/AB 10B. Taking into account the higher stability of the IRA 402/TAR and IRA 402/AB 10B resins, in a second step, adsorption studies were carried out on complex acid effluents polluted with M^X+. The adsorption of M^X+ from an acidic aqueous medium on the chelating resins was evaluated using the ICP-MS method. The following affinity series under competitive analysis for IRA 402/TAR was obtained: Fe³⁺(44 µg/g) > Ni²⁺(39.8 µg/g) > Cd²⁺(34 µg/g) > Cr³⁺(33.2 µg/g) > Pb²⁺(32.7 µg/g) > Cu²⁺ (32.5 µg/g) > Mn²⁺(31 µg/g) > Co²⁺(29 µg/g) > Zn²⁺ (27.5 µg/g). While for IRA 402/AB 10B, the following behavior was observed: Fe³⁺(58 µg/g) > Ni²⁺(43.5 µg/g) > Cd²⁺(43 µg/g) > Cu²⁺(38 µg/g) > Cr³⁺(35 µg/g) > Pb²⁺(34.5 µg/g) > Co²⁺(32.8 µg/g) > Mn²⁺(33 µg/g) > Zn²⁺(32 µg/g), consistent with the decreasing affinity of M^X+ for chelate resin. The chelating resins were characterized using TG, FTIR, and SEM analysis. The obtained results showed that the chelating resins prepared have promising potential for wastewater treatment in the context of the circular economy approach.

ZnS:Eu @ZIF-8: Selective formation of ZnS:Eu QDs within a zinc methylimidazole framework for chemical sensing applications

Light harvesting based on a microporous zeolite imidazole backbone (MOF) has attracted considerable interest as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of analytes. In this work, we have prepared a novel complex containing quantum dots of doped rare earth elements by a one-pot method. to be applied to the fluorescence detection of pollution hazards. Because of the solid framework, the prepared ZnS:Eu@ZIF-8 composite shows desirable fluorescence properties. The selectivity and sensitivity of ZnS:Eu@ZIF -8 to TNP, which has a detection limit of 0.19 μmol/L, is further investigated and its sensing mechanism is discussed by means of fluorescence lifetime measurements in combination with emission and UV spectra. It should also be noted that this is the first doped quantum dot to be encapsulated in a MOF to be used for the potential detection of phenolic compounds in the aqueous environment, while the framework remains in place and no structural changes have occurred.

Chiral covalent organic framework-based open tubular capillary electrochromatography column for enantioseparation of selected amino acids and pesticides

A novel chiral covalent organic framework (CCOF) was synthesized with an imine covalent organic framework TpBD (synthesized via Schiff-base reaction between phloroglucinol (Tp) and benzidine (BD)) modified using (1S)-(+)-10-camphorsulfonyl chloride as chiral ligand by chemical bonding method for the first time, and was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, thermogravimetry analysis, and zeta-potential. The results revealed that the CCOF had good crystallinity, high specific surface area and good thermal stability. Then, the CCOF was employed as stationary phase in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) column (the CCOF-bonded OT-CEC column) for enantioseparation of 21 single chiral compounds (12 natural amino acids including acidic, neutral and basic, 9 pesticides including herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) and simultaneous enantioseparation of mixture amino acids and pesticides with similar structures or properties. Under the optimized CEC conditions, all the analytes reached the baseline separation with high resolutions of 1.67-25.93 and selectivity factors of 1.06-3.49 in 8 min. Finally, the reproducibility and stability of the CCOF-bonded OT-CEC column were measured. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) of retention time and separation efficiency were 0.58-4.57% and 1.85-4.98%, and not obviously changed after 150 runs. These results demonstrate that COFs-modified OT-CEC explore a promising method to separate chiral compounds.

Application of covalent organic frameworks and metal–organic frameworks nanomaterials in organic/inorganic pollutants removal from solutions through sorption-catalysis strategies

With the fast development of agriculture, industrialization and urbanization, large amounts of different (in)organic pollutants are inevitably discharged into the ecosystems. The efficient decontamination of the (in)organic contaminants is crucial to human health and ecosystem pollution remediation. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted multidisciplinary research interests because of their outstanding physicochemical properties like high stability, large surface areas, high sorption capacity or catalytic activity. In this review, we summarized the recent works about the elimination/extraction of organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, and radionuclides by MOFs and COFs nanomaterials through the sorption-catalytic degradation for organic chemicals and sorption-catalytic reduction-precipitation-extraction for metals or radionuclides. The interactions between the (in)organic pollutants and COFs/MOFs nanomaterials at the molecular level were discussed from the density functional theory calculation and spectroscopy analysis. The sorption of organic chemicals was mainly dominated by electrostatic attraction, π-π interaction, surface complexation and H-bonding interaction, whereas the sorption of radionuclides and metal ions was mainly attributed to surface complexation, ion exchange, reduction and incorporation reactions. The porous structures, surface functional groups, and active sites were important for the sorption ability and selectivity. The doping or co-doping of metal/nonmetal, or the incorporation with other materials could change the visible light harvest and the generation/separation of electrons/holes (e−/h+) pairs, thereby enhanced the photocatalytic activity. The challenges for the possible application of COFs/MOFs nanomaterials in the elimination of pollutants from water were described in the end.

Colorimetric aptasensor for fumonisin B1 detection based on the DNA tetrahedra-functionalized magnetic beads and DNA hydrogel-coated bimetallic MOFzyme

The toxicity and incidence of fumonisin B₁ (FB₁) pose a major challenge to public health and the environment, prompting the development of alternative quantitative strategies for FB₁. Herein, a colorimetric aptasensor was constructed based on DNA tetrahedra-functionalized magnetic beads (MBs) and DNA hydrogel-coated Mn-Zr bimetallic metal-organic frameworks-based nanozyme (MOFzyme). Initially, MBs functionalized by DNA tetrahedra demonstrated excellent capturing capability for FB₁. Along with the capture of FB₁, catalyst DNA (C) was released into the supernatant. Aided by fuel DNA (F), C can trigger continuous cleavage of the main chains and cross-linking points of the DNA hydrogel through an entropy-driven DNA circuit integrated into the hydrogel coating. Subsequently, the bimetallic MOFzyme encapsulated inside the DNA hydrogel was exposed and exerted its superb peroxidase-like activity, producing a colorimetric signal whose intensity was positively dependent on the amount of FB₁. The developed aptasensor exhibited good linearity in the range of 5 × 10^-4 to 50 ng mL^-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.38 pg mL^-1, and reasonable specificity in different matrices. Furthermore, the aptasensor was successfully applied to quantify FB₁ in actual samples with recoveries fell within 92.25 %- 108.00 %, showing its great potential in environmental monitoring and food safety.

Fully Flexible Covalent Organic Frameworks for Fluorescence Sensing 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol and p-Nitrophenol

Nitrophenols are important nitroaromatic compounds, both important environmental pollutants and dangerous explosives, posing a devastating danger and pollution threat to humans. It is vital to detect efficiently trace nitrophenols in the environment. In this contribution, a series of fully flexible cyclotriphosphazene-based COFs (FFCP COFs: HDADE, HBAPB, and HBPDA), prepared with both a flexible knot and flexible linkers of different lengths, were used for sensing 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) and p-nitrophenol (p-NP) in real time with excellent sensitivity and selectivity. The quenching constants of HDADE by TNP, HBAPB, and HBPDA by p-NP are 6.29 × 10⁴, 2.17 × 10⁵, and 2.48 × 10⁵ L·mol^-1, respectively. The LODs of TNP and p-NP are 1.19 × 10^-11, 6.91 × 10^-12, and 6.05 × 10^-12 mol·L^-1. Their sensitivities increase with the linker length, which is better than the corresponding COFs composed of rigid linkers. There is only a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism in the fluorescence quenching of HBPDA by p-NP. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of photoinduced charge transfer and resonance energy transfer exist in the fluorescence quenching of HDADE by TNP and the fluorescence quenching of HBAPB by p-NP.

Covalent organic framework-based porous materials for harmful gas purification

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with 2D or 3D networks are a class of novel porous crystalline materials, and have attracted more and more attention in the field of gas purification owing to their attractive physicochemical properties, such as high surface area, adjustable functionality and structure, low density, and high stability. However, few systematic reviews about the application statuses of COFs in gas purification are available, especially about non-CO₂ harmful gases. In this review, the recent progress of COFs about the capture, catalysis, and detection of common harmful gases (such as CO₂, NO_x, SO₂, H₂S, NH₃ and volatile pollutants) were comprehensively discussed. The design strategies of COF functional materials from porosity adjustment to surface functionalization (including bottom-up approach, post-synthetic approach, and blending with other materials) for certain application were summarized in detail. Furthermore, the faced challenges and future research directions of COFs in the harmful gas treatment were clearly proposed to inspire the development of COFs.

Machine learning-assisted array from fluorescent conjugated microporous polymers for multiple explosives recognition

The fluorescent properties of conjugated microporous polyphenylene (CMPs) were tuned through a wide range by inclusion of small amount of comonomer as chromophore in the network. The multi-color CMPs were used for explosives sensing and demonstrated broad sensitivity (ranging from -0.01888 μM^-1 to -0.00467 μM^-1) and LODs (ranging from 31.0 nM to 125.3 nM) against thirteen explosive compounds including nitroaromatics (NACs), nitramines (NAMs) and nitrogen-rich heterocycles (NRHCs). The CMPs were also developed as a sensor array for discrimination of thirteen explosives, specifically including NT, p-DNB, DNT, TNT, TNP, TNR, RDX, HMX, CL-20, FOX-7, NTO, DABT and DHT. By using classical statistical method "Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA)", the thirteen explosives at a fixed concentration were completely discriminated and unknown test samples were indentied with 88% classification accuracy. Moreover, explosives in different concentrations and the mixtures of explosives were also successfully classified. Compared with LDA, Machine Learning algorithms have significant advantages in analyzing the array-based sensing data. Different Machine Learning models for pattern recognition have also been implemented and discussed here and much higher accuracy (96% for "neural network") can be achieved in predicting unknown test samples after training.

Characteristic Synthesis of a Covalent Organic Framework and Its Application in Multifunctional Tumor Therapy

For decades, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted wide biomedical interest due to their unique properties including ease of synthesis, porosity, and adjustable biocompatibility. Versatile COFs can easily encapsulate various therapeutic drugs due to their extremely high payload and porosity. COFs with abundant functional groups can be surface-modified to achieve active targeting and enhance biocompatibility. In this paper, the latest developments of COFs in the biomedical field are summarized. First, the classification and synthesis of COFs are discussed. Cancer diagnosis and treatment based on COFs are studied, and the advantages and limitations of each method are discussed. Second, the specific preparation methods to obtain specific therapeutic properties are summarized. Finally, based on the combination and modification of COFs with various components, this review system summarizes different combination therapies. In addition, the main challenges faced in COF research and prospects for applying COFs to cancer diagnosis and treatment are evaluated. This review provides enlightening insights into the interdisciplinary research on COFs and applications in biomedicine, which highlight the great expectations for their further clinical transformation.

Design of terbium (III)-functionalized covalent organic framework as a selective and sensitive turn-on fluorescent switch for ochratoxin A monitoring

For the first time, we develop a terbium (III)-functionalized covalent organic framework named Dpy-NhBt-COF@Tb³⁺, through anchoring Tb³⁺ onto a two-dimensional imine COF (Dpy-NhBt-COF), as the selective and sensitive turn-on fluorescent switch for ochratoxin A (OTA) monitoring. Of particular significance, Tb³⁺ actually plays two roles during sensing process: the specific response signal, and exclusive recognition sites for OTA, while Dpy-NhBt-COF acts as the protector for Tb³⁺. The sensing process involves the replacement of coordinated water molecules from Tb³⁺ by OTA and the energy transfer from OTA to Tb³⁺ centers, resulting in remarkable fluorescence emergence of Tb³⁺. The stabilization of Tb³⁺ via coordination with bipyridine of Dpy-NhBt-COF not only reduces the nonselective binding of naturally occurring ligands, but also avoids the non-radiative quenching caused by solvents molecules. As a sensing platform, Dpy-NhBt-COF@Tb³⁺ possesses noticeable selectivity and high sensitivity toward OTA with an ultralow detection limit of 13.5 nM and rapid response of 10 s. Taken together, our work not only demonstrates great prospect of Tb³⁺-functionalized COF for OTA detection, but also provides a potential way to explore other functionalized materials as promising sensors for other targets.

Visual Hg(II) sensing in aqueous solution via a new 2,5-Bis(4-pyridyl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole-based fluorescence coordination polymer

A new fluorescence coordination polymer [Zn(Py₂TTz)(5-OH-IPA)]_n (1) (Py₂TTz = 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole, 5-OH-IPA = 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid dianion) was synthesized, which exhibited the characteristics of fluorescence quenching and bathochromic shift toward Hg(II) in aqueous solution at pH 7.00. Mechanism study showed that the interactions between Hg(II) ions and Py₂TTz ligands in 1 were responsible for the fluorescence emission change. Thanks to the specific interactions between 1 and Hg(II), excellent selectivity was achieved both in aqueous solution and in solid test paper. The detection limit of 1 for Hg(II) sensing was 125.76 nmol L^-1 and a linear rang was 1.00-10.00 μmol L^-1. More importantly, satisfactory recovery and accuracy of 1 for Hg(II) sensing were also obtained in buffer-free real water samples.

MOF/COF hybrids as next generation materials for energy and biomedical applications

The rapid increase in the number and variety of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has led to groundbreaking applications in the field of materials science and engineering. New MOF/COF hybrids combine the outstanding features of MOF and COF structures, such as high crystallinities, large surface areas, high porosities, the ability to decorate the structures with functional groups, and improved chemical and mechanical stabilities. These new hybrid materials offer promising performances for a wide range of applications including catalysis, energy storage, gas separation, and nanomedicine. In this highlight, we discuss the recent advancements of MOF/COF hybrids as next generation materials for energy and biomedical applications with a special focus on the use of computational tools to address the opportunities and challenges of using MOF/COF hybrids for various applications.

Amino-functionalized Cu metal-organic framework nanosheets as fluorescent probes for detecting TNP

Here, we report a simple and benign method to successfully fabricate amino-functionalized Cu metal-organic framework (NH₂-Cu-MOF) nanosheets. After synthesizing Cu₂O nanocubes, they were mixed with organic ligand 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH₂BDC) solution at room temperature for 4 hours to form NH₂-Cu-MOF nanosheets. Interestingly, the prepared NH₂-Cu-MOF nanosheets have ultra-thin thickness, directional growth characteristics and excellent crystallinity. Moreover, such nanosheets showed high-intensity and high-stability fluorescence emission under excitation. As TNP in water can quench the fluorescence emission of the fluorescent probe, the NH₂-Cu-MOF nanosheet fluorescent probe was established for detecting TNP in water with high sensitivity and selectivity, which is very useful for assessing the environmental quality and safety of water bodies. Finally, the probe was used to detect TNP in actual samples with good recovery rate.

The influence of modified molecular (D/L-serine) chirality on the theragnostics of PAMAM-based nanomedicine for acute kidney injury

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a severe clinical disease with extremely high morbidity and mortality. It is challenging to find a simple method for early detection of AKI and monitoring the treatment results. Renal tubular damage and inflammation are early events in AKI. Renal tubular damage is conducive to the accumulation of small-sized nanoparticles in the kidney, and inflammation is related to the excessive production of H₂O₂. Recent studies proved that chiral molecule modification of nanomaterials is a powerful strategy to regulate their biodistribution. Thus, L-serine and D-serine modified poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers were synthesized and used as fluorescent probe (NPSH) carriers to obtain L-SPH and D-SPH, respectively. D-SPH has a strong accumulation capability in the kidney of AKI mice. Then, the H₂O₂ fluorescent probe can detect the excessively produced H₂O₂ to generate fluorescence to diagnose AKI. Subsequently, the anti-inflammatory drug manganese pentacarbonyl bromide (CORM) was loaded in D-SPH to obtain D-SPHC with AKI theragnostic functions. Simultaneously, the D-SPHC fluorescence signal intensity change during the treatment can be used to monitor the recovery process. This study is the first report of chiral materials used in the diagnosis and treatment of AKI.

Hybrid Porous Crystalline Materials from Metal Organic Frameworks and Covalent Organic Frameworks

Two frontier crystalline porous framework materials, namely, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been widely explored owing to their outstanding physicochemical properties. While each type of framework has its own intrinsic advantages and shortcomings for specific applications, combining the complementary properties of the two materials allows the engineering of new classes of hybrid porous crystalline materials with properties superior to the individual components. Since the first report of MOF/COF hybrid in 2016, it has rapidly evolved as a novel platform for diverse applications. The state-of-art advances in the various synthetic approaches of MOF/COF hybrids are hereby summarized, together with their applications in different areas. Perspectives on the main challenges and future opportunities are also offered in order to inspire a multidisciplinary effort toward the further development of chemically diverse, multi-functional hybrid porous crystalline materials.

Highly-Efficient Sulfonated UiO-66(Zr) Optical Fiber for Rapid Detection of Trace Levels of Pb2

Lead detection for biological environments, aqueous resources, and medicinal compounds, rely mainly on either utilizing bulky lab equipment such as ICP-OES or ready-made sensors, which are based on colorimetry with some limitations including selectivity and low interference. Remote, rapid and efficient detection of heavy metals in aqueous solutions at ppm and sub-ppm levels have faced significant challenges that requires novel compounds with such ability. Here, a UiO-66(Zr) metal-organic framework (MOF) functionalized with SO3H group (SO3H-UiO-66(Zr)) is deposited on the end-face of an optical fiber to detect lead cations (Pb2+) in water at 25.2, 43.5 and 64.0 ppm levels. The SO3H-UiO-66(Zr) system provides a Fabry–Perot sensor by which the lead ions are detected rapidly (milliseconds) at 25.2 ppm aqueous solution reflecting in the wavelength shifts in interference spectrum. The proposed removal mechanism is based on the adsorption of [Pb(OH2)6]2+ in water on SO3H-UiO-66(Zr) due to a strong affinity between functionalized MOF and lead. This is the first work that advances a multi-purpose optical fiber-coated functional MOF as an on-site remote chemical sensor for rapid detection of lead cations at extremely low concentrations in an aqueous system.
