Perfluoroalkyl acids on suspended particles: Significant transport pathways in surface runoff, surface waters, and subsurface soils

Release of perfluoroalkyl acids from sediments under the effects of the discharge ratio and flow flux at a Y-shaped confluence

The sediments in riverine environments contain notably high concentrations of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), which may be released into the water body under different hydrodynamic forces, such as those occurring at Y-shaped confluences. The release of PFAAs may pose a significant risk to the surrounding aquatic ecosystems. However, our understanding of the release and transport of PFAAs from sediments at Y-shaped confluences remains unclear. Thus, in this study, we performed a series of flume experiments to explore the effects of discharge ratio and total flow flux on the release and redistribution of PFAAs. The results indicated that these two parameters significantly affected the hydrodynamic features of confluences and the water physicochemical parameters. PFAA concentrations in the dissolved phase and suspended particulate matter (SPM) rose significantly as the discharge ratio and total flow flux increased. The dissolved phase was the predominant loading form of PFAAs, with short-chain PFAAs being the main kind, while long-chain PFAAs were dominant in the SPM. The spatial distribution pattern of PFAAs in sediments at the confluence exhibited a high degree of correspondence with hydrodynamic zones. The separation zone and maximum velocity zone were consistent with sediment regions with low and high capacities to release PFAAs, respectively. The patterns of variation in PFAA distribution were comparable to those observed in hydrodynamic zones as the discharge ratio and total flow flux varied. Furthermore, these two parameters altered the partitioning behaviors of PFAAs; specifically, the PFAAs in sediments tended to be released into the pore-water, while the liberated PFAAs tended to attach to SPM. Linear regression and correlation analyses suggested that the stream-wise and vertical flow velocity components near the sediment-water interface were the primary contributors to sediment suspension and PFAA exchange between the water column and pore-water. These findings will help us to understand the patterns of PFAA release in sediments at Y-shaped confluences and assist in the management of PFAA-contaminated sediments at these locations.

Innovative Techniques for Combating a Common Enemy Forever Chemicals: A Comprehensive Approach to Mitigating Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Contamination

The pervasive presence of per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," in water systems poses a significant threat to both the environment and public health. PFAS are persistent organic pollutants that are incredibly resistant to degradation and have a tendency to accumulate in the environment, resulting in long-term contamination issues. This comprehensive review delves into the primary impacts of PFAS on both the environment and human health while also delving into advanced techniques aimed at addressing these concerns. The focus is on exploring the efficacy, practicality, and sustainability of these methods. The review outlines several key methods, such as advanced oxidation processes, novel materials adsorption, bioremediation, membrane filtration, and in-situ chemical oxidation, and evaluates their effectiveness in addressing PFAS contamination. By conducting a comparative analysis of these techniques, the study aims to provide a thorough understanding of current PFAS remediation technologies, as well as offer insights into integrated approaches for managing these persistent pollutants effectively. While acknowledging the high efficiency of adsorption and membrane filtration in reducing persistent organic pollutants due to their relatively low cost, versatility, and wide applicability, the review suggests that the integration of these methods could result in an overall enhancement of removal performance. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need for researcher attention in key areas and underscores the necessity of collaboration between researchers, industry, and regulatory authorities to address this complex challenge.

Layer-specific mechanisms of perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) transport and partition in estuarine environments: Unveiling the depth-dependent differences

Understanding of characteristics and transport of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in heterogeneous estuarine environments is limited. Furthermore, the role of suspended particles (SPS) in different layers remains unclear. This study explores the multiphase distribution process and mechanism of PFAAs controlled by SPS across surface and bottom layers in five small estuaries. Peaks in PFAA concentrations are consistently observed at strongly stratified sites. Concentrations of the PFAAs in both surface and bottom SPS decreased as the degree of mixing increased from strongly stratified levels to well-mixed levels. The water-SPS partitioning of some short-chain PFAAs (PFBS, PFHxA, and PFHpA) is influenced by environmental factors (pH, depth, temperature, and salinity) due to electrostatic interactions, while the sorption of some long-chain PFAAs (PFOA, PFOS, and PFNA) is controlled by SPS and dissolved organic carbon (OC), driven by hydrophobic interactions. Additionally, SPS dominates OC transport in estuarine systems, except in sandy sediment environments. SPS plays a dominant role in PFAA partitioning in both surface and bottom water-SPS systems (p < 0.05), and salinity only significantly affects PFBS in bottom layer (p < 0.01). These findings are critical for understanding the drivers of PFAA partitioning and the roles of SPS in different layers, underscoring the necessity of considering particle-associated PFAA fractions in future coastal environmental management.

Influence of soil composition and environmental factors on the adsorption of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: A review

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have garnered considerable scientific and regulatory scrutiny due to their widespread distribution across environments and their potential toxicological impacts on human health. The pedosphere serves as a vital reservoir for these chemicals, significantly determining their environmental trajectory and chemical transformations. This study offers a comprehensive synthesis of the current understanding regarding the adsorption mechanics of PFASs in soil matrices. Due to their unique molecular structure, PFASs predominantly engage in hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions during soil adsorption. This work thoroughly evaluates the influence of various factors on adsorption efficiency, including soil properties, molecular characteristics of PFASs, and the prevailing environmental conditions. The complex nature of soil environments complicates isolating individual impacts on PFAS behavior, necessitating an integrated approach to understanding their environmental destinies better. Through this exploration, we seek to clarify the complex interplay of factors that modulate the adsorption of PFASs in soils, highlighting the urgent need for future research to disentangle the intricate and combined effects that control the environmental behavior of PFAS compounds.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation and trophic dynamics of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in two tropical freshwater lakes

We have investigated the occurrence, distribution, and biomagnification of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in two tropical lakes (Asejire and Eleyele) of Southwestern Nigeria, with contrasting urban intensities. Over an 8-month period, we sampled sediment and fish species (Clarias gariepinus: CIG; Oreochromis niloticus: ON; Coptodon guineensis: CG; Sarotherodon melanotheron: SM) across trophic levels, and analyzed various PFAS congeners, in addition to a select group of toxicological responses. While herbivores (SM) and benthic omnivores (CIG) at Asejire exhibited elevated levels of PFBS and PFOS, the pelagic omnivores (ON) showed a dominance of PFOS, PFDA, PFHxDA and EtFOSE in the muscle. At the Eleyele urban lake, PFAS patterns was dominated by PFBS, EtFOSE, PFPeS, PFOcDA and PFOS in the herbivores (SM, CG), EtFOSE, PFOS and PFBS in the pelagic omnivore (ON) and benthic omnivore (ClG). The estimated biomagnification factor (BMF) analysis for both lakes indicated trophic level increase of PFOS, PFUnA and PFDA at the suburban lake, while PFOS and EtFOSE biomagnified at the urban lake. We detected the occurrence of diSAMPAP and 9CL-PF3ONS, novel compounds not commonly reported, in PFAS studies at both lakes. The studied toxicological responses varied across trophic groups in both lakes with probable modulations by environmental conditions, trophic structure, and relative PFAS exposures in the lakes. The present study documents, for the first time in Nigeria, or any other African country, the role of urbanization on contaminant load into the environment and their implications for contaminant dynamics within the ecosystem and for aquatic food safety.

Aquatic macroinvertebrate community responses to pollution of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): Can we define threshold body burdens?

The pollution of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic environments is a worldwide concern of which the ecological impact is still not well understood. Especially field-based effect studies in aquatic ecosystems are generally lacking, creating a knowledge gap that goes along with monitoring and regulatory challenges. Therefore, this study examined if bioaccumulated PFAS concentrations could be related to ecological responses assessed by changes in the macroinvertebrate community structure. In addition, threshold body burdens that are protective of ecological damage were estimated. Aquatic macroinvertebrates were sampled in 30 streams across Flanders (Belgium) and 28 PFAS target analytes were measured in three resident taxa (Gammarus sp., Asellus sp. and Chironomus sp.) and translocated zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha). The macroinvertebrate community structure was assessed by calculating the Multimetric Macroinvertebrate Index Flanders (MMIF). Primarily long-chain perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) were detected in both resident taxa (passive biomonitoring) and zebra mussels (active biomonitoring). Based on a 90th quantile regression model, safe threshold body burdens could be calculated for PFTeDA (7.1 ng/g ww) and ΣPFAS (2264 ng/g ww) in Gammarus sp. and for PFOA (5.5 ng/g ww), PFDoDA (1.7 ng/g ww), PFTrDA (0.51 ng/g ww), PFTeDA (2.4 ng/g ww), PFOS (644 ng/g ww) and ΣPFAS (133 ng/g ww) in zebra mussel. An additional threshold value was calculated for most compounds and species using the 95th percentile method. However, although these estimated thresholds are pertinent and indicative, regulatory applicability requires further lines of evidence and validation. Nevertheless, this study offers first-time evidence of associations between accumulated PFAS concentrations in invertebrates and a reduced ecological water quality in terms of macroinvertebrate community structure and highlights the potential of Gammarus sp. and zebra mussels to serve as reliable PFAS biomonitoring species.

Resilience of stormwater biofilters following the deposition of wildfire residues: Implication on downstream water quality management in wildfire-prone regions

Stormwater treatment systems such as biofilters could intercept and remove pollutants from contaminated runoff in wildfire-affected areas, ensuring the protection of water quality downstream. However, the deposition of wildfire residues such as ash and black carbon onto biofilters could potentially impair their stormwater treatment functions. Yet, whether and how wildfire residue deposition could affect biofilter functions is unknown. This study examines the impact of wildfire residue deposition on biofilter infiltration and pollutant removal capacities. Exposure to wildfire residues decreased the infiltration capacity based on the amount of wildfire deposited. Wildfire residues accumulated at the top layer of the biofilter, forming a cake layer, but scraping this layer restored the infiltration capacity. While the deposition of wildfire residues slightly changed the pore water geochemistry, it did not significantly alter the removal of metals and E. coli. Although wildfire residues leached some metals into pore water within the simulated root zone, the leached metals were effectively removed by the compost present in the filter media. Collectively, these results indicate that biofilters downstream of wildfire-prone areas could remain resilient or functional and protect downstream water quality if deposited ash is periodically scraped to restore any loss of infiltration capacity following wildfire residue deposition.

Are Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) suitable as biomonitor or bioindicator of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous in the environment. In Flanders, the bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms is currently being monitored using European perch and European eel. Since both are native species, there is an ethical need to search for other suitable biomonitors. This study aims to investigate whether the invasive Chinese mitten crab could be used in biomonitoring programs by assessing PFAS accumulation in hepatopancreas, muscle tissue, and carapace. Furthermore, we correlated accumulated concentrations to those in the local abiotic environment. Concentrations in the crabs (highest average ∑PFAS concentration of 688 ± 505 ng/g ww) were often higher than those in crab species from other regions across the globe, confirming that Flanders is highly polluted with PFAS. Concentrations in the crabs did not reflect those in the abiotic environment. This implies that biomonitoring is necessary to investigate the impact of PFAS pollution on organisms in aquatic ecosystems, as important data is missing when only the abiotic environment is monitored. The accumulation profiles differed between the invasive crab and the native European perch and European eel, potentially due to a different ecology and trophic position. Since all three species provide complementary information on the PFAS pollution, a multi-species approach in biomonitoring is recommended. Overall, our results show that the crabs can be used as biomonitor, but more information is necessary to confirm their suitability as bioindicator.

Interactions between MPs and PFASs in aquatic environments: A dual-character situation

Microplastics (MPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have drawn great attention as emerging threats to aquatic ecosystems. Although the literature to study the MPs and PFASs alone has grown significantly, our knowledge of the overlap and interactions between the two contaminations is scarce due to the unawareness of it. Actually, numerous human activities can simultaneously release MPs and PFASs, and the co-sources of the two are common, meaning that they have a greater potential for interactions. The direct interaction lies in the PFASs adsorption by MPs in water with integrated mechanisms including electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, plus many influence factors. In addition, the existence and transportation of MPs and PFASs in the aquatic environment have been identified. MPs and PFASs can be ingested by aquatic organisms and cause more serious combined toxicity than exposure alone. Finally, curbing strategies of MPs and PFASs are overviewed. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be an effective place to remove MPs from wastewater, while they are also an important point source of MPs pollution in water bodies. Although adsorption has proven to be a successful curbing method for PFASs, more technological advancements are required for field application. It is expected that this review can help revealing the unheeded relationship and interaction between MPs and PFASs in aquatic environments, thus assisting the further investigations of both MPs and PFASs as a whole.

Do drinking water treatment residuals underperform in the presence of compost in stormwater media filters?

Drinking water treatment residuals (WTR), a waste-derived product, are often recommended to use as an amendment in stormwater biofilters to enhance their capacity to remove phosphate and microbial pollutants. However, their efficacy has been assumed to remain high in the presence of compost, one of the most common amendments used in biofilters. This study tests the validity of that assumption by comparing the removal capacities of WTR-amended biofilters with and without the presence of compost. Our results show that amending sand with WTR increased E. coli removal by at least 1-log, but the addition of compost in the sand-WTR media lowered the removal capacity by 13 %. Similarly, the addition of WTR to sand improved phosphate removal to nearly 1177 %, but the removal decreased slightly by 8 % when adding compost to the media. The results confirmed that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leached from the compost could compete for adsorption sites for bacteria and phosphate, thereby lowering WTR's adsorption capacity based on the amount of DOC adsorbed on WTR. Collectively, these results indicate that the stormwater treatment industry should avoid mixing compost with WTR to get the maximum benefits of WTR for bacterial removal and improve the performance lifetime of WTR-amended biofilters.

Source, transport, and fate of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in turbid bay environments: Significant roles of suspended sediment and water column stratification

The coastal area was the major region receiving pollution from land-based sources into the sea. Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in famous bays had aroused wide concern, but the importance of underdeveloped or small bays with notable levels of PFAAs were often neglected. Moreover, the roles of suspended sediment (SPS) and water column stratification on PFAA behaviors were unclear. In this study, PFAAs distribution in multiphase-multilayer in four underdeveloped bays (two urban bays and two island bays) were investigated. The urban bays not only had higher PFAA contamination but also posed a greater threat of short-chain PFAAs in water-SPS-sediment system than the island bays. The major source of PFAAs in water and SPS was domestic sewage in urban bays and was rainfall-runoff in island bays. Water column stratification with higher PFAA partition in water-SPS system in the surface layer than in the bottom layer was only found in the urban bays due to the higher human activity intensity. These provided new perspectives for managing emerging contaminants and establishing water quality criteria in the turbid coastal environment. The key role of SPS as a carrier offered possibilities to accurately differentiate the effects of dissolved and particulate PFAAs on bioavailability.

Emerging environmental health risks associated with the land application of biosolids: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Over 40% of the six million dry metric tons of sewage sludge, often referred to as biosolids, produced annually in the United States is land applied. Biosolids serve as a sink for emerging pollutants which can be toxic and persist in the environment, yet their fate after land application and their impacts on human health have not been well studied. These gaps in our understanding are exacerbated by the absence of systematic monitoring programs and defined standards for human health protection.

METHODS

The purpose of this paper is to call critical attention to the knowledge gaps that currently exist regarding emerging pollutants in biosolids and to underscore the need for evidence-based testing standards and regulatory frameworks for human health protection when biosolids are land applied. A scoping review methodology was used to identify research conducted within the last decade, current regulatory standards, and government publications regarding emerging pollutants in land applied biosolids.

RESULTS

Current research indicates that persistent organic compounds, or emerging pollutants, found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products, microplastics, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have the potential to contaminate ground and surface water, and the uptake of these substances from soil amended by the land application of biosolids can result in contamination of food sources. Advanced technologies to remove these contaminants from wastewater treatment plant influent, effluent, and biosolids destined for land application along with tools to detect and quantify emerging pollutants are critical for human health protection.

CONCLUSIONS

To address these current risks, there needs to be a significant investment in ongoing research and infrastructure support for advancements in wastewater treatment; expanded manufacture and use of sustainable products; increased public communication of the risks associated with overuse of pharmaceuticals and plastics; and development and implementation of regulations that are protective of health and the environment.

A State-of-the-Science Review of Interactions of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) with Renal Transporters in Health and Disease: Implications for Population Variability in PFAS Toxicokinetics

BACKGROUND

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous in the environment and have been shown to cause various adverse health impacts. In animals, sex- and species-specific differences in PFAS elimination half-lives have been linked to the activity of kidney transporters. However, PFAS molecular interactions with kidney transporters are still not fully understood. Moreover, the impact of kidney disease on PFAS elimination remains unclear.

OBJECTIVES

This state-of-the-science review integrated current knowledge to assess how changes in kidney function and transporter expression from health to disease could affect PFAS toxicokinetics and identified priority research gaps that should be addressed to advance knowledge.

METHODS

We searched for studies that measured PFAS uptake by kidney transporters, quantified transporter-level changes associated with kidney disease status, and developed PFAS pharmacokinetic models. We then used two databases to identify untested kidney transporters that have the potential for PFAS transport based on their endogenous substrates. Finally, we used an existing pharmacokinetic model for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in male rats to explore the influence of transporter expression levels, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and serum albumin on serum half-lives.

RESULTS

The literature search identified nine human and eight rat kidney transporters that were previously investigated for their ability to transport PFAS, as well as seven human and three rat transporters that were confirmed to transport specific PFAS. We proposed a candidate list of seven untested kidney transporters with the potential for PFAS transport. Model results indicated PFOA toxicokinetics were more influenced by changes in GFR than in transporter expression.

DISCUSSION

Studies on additional transporters, particularly efflux transporters, and on more PFAS, especially current-use PFAS, are needed to better cover the role of transporters across the PFAS class. Remaining research gaps in transporter expression changes in specific kidney disease states could limit the effectiveness of risk assessment and prevent identification of vulnerable populations. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP11885.

A systematic review on distribution, sources and sorption of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in soil and their plant uptake

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are ubiquitous in environment, which have attracted increasing concerns in recent years. This study collected the data on PFAAs concentrations in 1042 soil samples from 15 countries and comprehensively reviewed the spatial distribution, sources, sorption mechanisms of PFAAs in soil and their plant uptake. PFAAs are widely detected in soils from many countries worldwide and their distribution is related to the emission of the fluorine-containing organic industry. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are found to be the predominant PFAAs in soil. Industrial emission is the main source of PFAAs contributing 49.9% of the total concentrations of PFAAs (Ʃ PFAAs) in soil, followed by activated sludge treated by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) (19.9%) and irrigation of effluents from WWTPs, usage of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFFs) and leaching of leachate from landfill (30.2%). The adsorption of PFAAs by soil is mainly influenced by soil pH, ionic strength, soil organic matter and minerals. The concentrations of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) in soil are negatively correlated with the length of carbon chain, log K_ow, and log K_oc. The carbon chain lengths of PFAAs are negatively correlated with the root-soil concentration factors (RCFs) and shoot-soil concentration factors (SCFs). The uptake of PFAAs by plant is influenced by physicochemical properties of PFAAs, plant physiology and soil environment. Further studies should be conducted to make up the inadequacy of existing knowledge on the behavior and fate of PFAAs in soil-plant system.

Different Sources, Fractionation, and Migration of Legacy and Novel Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances between Greenhouse and Open-Field Soils

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely present in agricultural soils, but their sources and fate in greenhouse soils remain unclear. In this study, the sources, fractionation, and migration of PFASs were compared in the greenhouse and open-field soils of the Fen-Wei Plain, China. The total concentrations of PFASs (Σ₁₇PFAS) were comparable in the greenhouse and open-field soils but with different profiles. Detrended correspondence and correlation analyses indicated that dry deposition was an important source of PFASs in the open-field soils, whereas surface water had a notable contribution to the greenhouse soils due to more frequent irrigation. The PFASs in the soils were mainly present in water-soluble fraction (F1). The F1 proportions of short-chain and long-chain PFASs were negatively correlated with the anion exchange capacity (AEC) and organic carbon content (f_oc) in soil, respectively, with that of short-chain PFASs being higher than long-chain ones. The AEC was significantly higher while f_oc was lower in the greenhouse soil than the open-field soil, leading to lower proportions of F1 for short-chain PFASs while higher for long-chain ones in the greenhouse soil. Frequent irrigation and elevated temperatures promoted the migration of PFASs in greenhouse soil; thus, the Σ₁₇PFAS and F1 exhibited an increasing trend with soil depth.

Occurrence, spatial heterogeneity, and risk assessment of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in the major rivers of the Tibetan Plateau

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is home to the headwaters of major rivers in Asia, yet their water quality security on a large spatial scale is scarcely studied, especially in regard to emerging organic pollutants. In this study, a systematic field campaign was carried out along Yarlung Tsangpo River, Nu River, Lancang River and Jinsha River, and 13 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) were analyzed. The total concentrations of PFAAs in the river waters of the TP were in the range of 0.58-7.46 ng/L, containing a high proportion of perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) with average values of 56.7 %. Elevated PFAA loadings were found for the midstream of Yarlung Tsangpo River in central Tibet. Geodetector results indicated that precipitation, solar radiation and vegetation type were the top three influential factors contributing to the observed spatial heterogeneity. When interactions with human activities were taken into account, the explanatory power was significantly enhanced and rose above 0.70, highlighting the increased risks for TP rivers from the combined effects of natural environments and anthropogenic activities. Risk assessments suggest a low risk is posed to the alpine aquatic ecosystems and human health. The discharge fluxes of PFAAs via riverine export were estimated at 94-425 kg/year, which is one to two orders of magnitude lower than their mass loadings in major rivers worldwide. Our study underlined the need for further attention to the increased risk of water resource quality on the central TP in the context of long-range transport, increased cryosphere melting and local emission.

Per- and Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances in Runoff and Leaching from AFFF-Contaminated Soils: a Rainfall Simulation Study

The mobilization and transport of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) via surface runoff (runoff) from aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF)-contaminated soils during rainfall, flooding, or irrigation has not been thoroughly evaluated, and the effectiveness of carbonaceous sorbents in limiting PFASs in runoff is similarly unquantified. Here, laboratory-scale rainfall simulations evaluate PFAS losses in runoff and in leaching to groundwater (leachate) from AFFF-contaminated soils varying in texture, PFAS composition and concentration, and remediation treatment. Leaching dominated PFAS losses in soils with a concentration of ∑PFAS = 0.2-2 mg/kg. However, with higher soil PFAS concentrations (∑PFAS = 31 mg/kg), leachate volumes were negligible and runoff dominated losses. The concentration and variety of PFASs were far greater in leachates regardless of the initial concentrations in soil. Losses of PFASs were dependent on the C-chain length for leachates and more on the initial concentration in soil for runoff. Suspended materials did not meaningfully contribute to runoff losses. While concentrations of most PFASs declined significantly after the first rainfall event, desorption and transport in both runoff and leachates persisted over several rainfall events. Finally, results showed that sorption to AC mostly occurred during, not prior to, rainfall events and that 1% w/w AC substantially reduced losses in runoff and leachates from all soils.

Pollutant source or sink? Adsorption and mobilization of PFOS and PFOA from sediments in a large shallow lake with extended reed belt

In this study, we i) assessed the occurrence of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) in sediments, pore water, and bulk water from three different areas in Lake Neusiedl, Austria, and ii) investigated mechanisms regulating adsorption and remobilization of these substances under different conditions via multiple lab-scale experiments. The adsorption capacity was mainly influenced by sediments' organic matter content, oxide composition, and pre-loading. Results suggest that a further increase of PFAS-concentrations in the open lake can be partly buffered by sediment transport to the littoral zone and adsorption to sediments in the extended reed belt. But, under current conditions, the conducted experiments revealed a real risk for mobilization of PFOS and PFOA from reed belt sediments that may lead to their transport back into the lake. The amount of desorbed PFAS is primarily dependent on water/sediment- or pore water/water-ratios and the concentration gradient. In contrast, water matrix characteristics and oxygen levels played a minor role in partitioning. The highest risk for remobilizing PFOS and PFOA was observed in experiments with sediments taken near the only major tributary to the lake (river Wulka), which had the highest pre-loading. The following management advice for water transport between high and low polluted areas can be derived based on the results. First, to reduce emissions into Lake waters from polluted tributaries like the Wulka river, we recommend diffuse pathways through the reed belt in the lake's littoral to reduce pollutant transport into the Lake and avoid high local sediment loadings. Second, water exchange with dried-up areas with probable higher loadings should be carefully handled and monitored to avoid critical back transport in the open lake. And third, general work in the reed belt or generally in the reed should be accompanied by monitoring to prevent uncontrolled remobilization in the future.

PFOS Mass Flux Reduction/Mass Removal: Impacts of a Lower-Permeability Sand Lens within Otherwise Homogeneous Systems

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is one of the most common per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and is a significant risk driver for these emerging contaminants of concern. A series of two-dimensional flow cell experiments was conducted to investigate the impact of flow field heterogeneity on the transport, attenuation, and mass removal of PFOS. A simplified model heterogeneous system was employed consisting of a lower-permeability fine sand lens placed within a higher-permeability coarse sand matrix. Three nonreactive tracers with different aqueous diffusion coefficients, sodium chloride, pentafluorobenzoic acid, and β-cyclodextrin, were used to characterize the influence of diffusive mass transfer on transport and for comparison to PFOS results. The results confirm that the attenuation and subsequent mass removal of the nonreactive tracers and PFOS were influenced by mass transfer between the hydraulically less accessible zone and the coarser matrix (i.e., back diffusion). A mathematical model was used to simulate flow and transport, with the values for all input parameters determined independently. The model predictions provided good matches to the measured breakthrough curves, as well as to plots of reductions in mass flux as a function of mass removed. These results reveal the importance of molecular diffusion and pore water velocity variability even for systems with relatively minor hydraulic conductivity heterogeneity. The impacts of the diffusive mass transfer limitation were quantified using an empirical function relating reductions in contaminant mass flux (MFR) to mass removal (MR). Multi-step regression was used to quantify the nonlinear, multi-stage MFR/MR behavior observed for the heterogeneous experiments. The MFR/MR function adequately reproduced the measured data, which suggests that the MFR/MR approach can be used to evaluate PFOS removal from heterogeneous media.

Linking microbiomes with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in soil ecosystems: Microbial community assembly, stability, and trophic phylosymbiosis

Microbiomes are vital in promoting nutrient cycling and plant growth in soil ecosystems. However, microbiomes face adverse effects from multiple persistent pollutants, including per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). PFASs threaten the fertility and health of soil ecosystems, yet the response of microbial community stability and trophic transfer efficiencies to PFASs is still poorly understood. This study explored the spatial patterns of PFASs in topsoil environments from the West Taihu Lake Basin of China and links their presence to soil microbial community stability at compositional and functional levels. Our results revealed that PFBA (13.87%), PFTrDA (11.63%), PFDoA (11.02%), PFOA (10.99%), and PFOS (10.39%) contributed the most to the spatial occurrence of PFASs. Soil properties, including salinity (14.47%), uniformity (9.68%), dissolved inorganic carbon (8.62%), and clay content (8.18%), affected PFASs distribution the most. In soil microbiomes, eukaryotic taxa had wider niche breadths and stronger community stability than prokaryotes when exposed to PFASs (p < 0.05). The presence of PFBA and PFHpA inhibited the functional stability of archaeal and bacterial communities (p < 0.05). PFBA and PFPeA reduced the structural stability of heterotrophic bacteria and Myxobacteria, respectively (p < 0.05). Based on null modeling, PFPeA significantly regulated the assembly processes of most microbial sub-communities (p < 0.01). The trophic transferring efficiencies of autotrophic bacteria to metazoan organisms were directly stimulated by PFASs (p < 0.05), and the potential trophic transferring efficiencies of methanogenic archaea to protozoa were inhibited by PFASs (p < 0.05). This study highlighted the potential contributions of PFASs to soil microbial community stability and food webs during ecological soil management.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in groundwater from a contaminated site in the North China Plain: Occurrence, source apportionment, and health risk assessment

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are manmade chemicals that have wide industrial and commercial application. However, little research has been carried out on PFASs pollution in groundwater from a previously contaminated site. Here, we investigated 43 PFASs in a monitoring campaign from two different aquifers in the North China Plain. Our results revealed that total PFASs concentrations (∑₄₃PFASs) ranged from 0.22 to 3,776.76 ng/L, with no spatial or compositional differences. Moreover, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluoroheptane sulfonate (PFHpS) were the dominant pollutants with mean concentrations of 177.33 ng/L and 51 ng/L, respectively. ∑₄₃PFAS decreased with well depth due to the adsorption of PFASs to the aquifer materials. Water temperature, total organic carbon, dissolved oxygen, and total phosphorus concentrations were correlated to the PFAS concentrations. Principal component analysis indicated that the main sources of PFASs in groundwater were untreated industrial discharge, untreated domestic wastewater, food packaging, aqueous film forming foams and metal plating, and surface runoff, which overlapped with the industries that previously existed in a nearby city. Human health risks from drinking contaminated groundwater were low to the local residents, with children aged 1-2 years being the most sensitive group. One specific site with a high PFOA concentration was of concern, as it was several orders higher than the 70 ng/L recommended by US Environmental Protection Agency health advisory. This study provided baseline data for PFASs in a previously-contaminated site, which will help in the development of effective strategies for controlling PFASs pollution in the North China Plain.

Removal of perfluoroalkyl acids and dynamic succession of biofilm microbial communities in the decomposition process of emergent macrophytes in wetlands

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are emerging contaminants that pose significant environmental and health concerns. Water-sediment-macrophyte residue systems were established to clarify the removal efficiency of PFAAs, explore possible removal pathways, and profile the dynamic succession of biofilm microbial communities in the decomposition process. These systems were fortified with 12 PFAAs at three concentration levels. Iris pseudacorus and Alisma orientale were selected as the decomposing emergent macrophytes. The removal rates in the treatments with residues of I. pseudacorus (IP) and A. orientale (AO) were 34.4% to 88.9% and 36.5% to 89.9%, respectively, which were higher than those in the control groups (CG) (30.3% to 86.9%), suggesting that decomposition could alter the removal of PFAAs. Sediment made the greatest contributions (preloaded 14.5% to 77.8% of PFAAs in IP, 14.3% to 78.2% in AO, and 27.4% to 71.9% in CG). PFAAs could also be removed by macrophyte residue sorption (0.0190% to 13.0% in IP and 0.016% to 15.6% in AO) and bioaccumulation of residual biofilm (the contributions of biofilm microbes and their extracellular polymeric substances were 0.0110% to 3.93% and 0.918% to 34.4%, respectively, in IP and 0.0141% to 4.65% and 1.49% to 34.1%, respectively, in AO). Significant correlations were observed between sediment/residue adsorption and bioaccumulation of biofilm microbes, and were significantly correlated with perfluoroalkyl chain length (p < 0.05). The dynamic succession of residual biofilm microbial communities was investigated. The largest difference was found at the preliminary stage. The most similar communities were found in AO on day 70 (with specific genera Macellibacteroides and WCHB1-32) and in IP on day 35 (with specific genera Aeromonas and Flavobacterium). This study is useful to understand the removal of PFAAs during the decomposition process, providing further assistance in removing PFAAs during the life cycle of macrophytes in wetlands.

Microplastics retained in stormwater control measures: Where do they come from and where do they go?

Stormwater control measures (SCM) can remove and accumulate microplastics and may serve as a long-term source of microplastics for groundwater pollution because of their potential for downward mobility in subsurface. Furthermore, the number of microplastics accumulated in SCM may have been underestimated as the calculation typically only accounts for microplastics accumulated via episodic stormwater loading and ignores microplastic accumuation via continuous atmospheric deposition. To evaluate the source pathways of accumulated microplastics and their potential for downward mobility to groundwater, we analyzed spatial distributions of microplastics above ground on the canopy around SCM and below ground in the subsurface in and outside the boundaries of fourteen SCM in Los Angeles. Using an exponential model, we link subsurface retardation of microplastics to the median particle size of soil (D₅₀) and land use. Despite receiving significantly more stormwater, microplastic concentrations in SCM at surface depth or subsurface depth were not significantly different from the concentration at the same depth outside the SCM. Similar concentration in and outside of SCM indicates that stormwater is not the sole source of microplastics accumulated in SCM. The high concentration of microplastics on leaves of vegetation in SCM confirms that the contribution of atmospheric deposition is significant. Within and outside the SCM boundary, microplastics are removed within the top 5 cm of the subsurface, and their concentration decreases exponentially with depth, indicating limited potential for groundwater pollution from the microplastics accumulated in SCM. Outside the SCM boundary, the subsurface retardation coefficient decreases with increases in D₅₀, indicating straining of microplastics as the dominant removal mechanism. Inside the boundary of SCM, however, the retardation coefficient was independent of D₅₀, implying that microplastics could have either moved deeper into the filter layer in SCM or that compost, mulch, or organic amendments used in the filter media were pre-contaminated with microplastics. Overall, these results provide insights on microplastics source, accumulation, and downward mobility in SCM.

Three-dimensional spatial distribution of legacy and novel poly/perfluoroalkyl substances in the Tibetan Plateau soil: Implications for transport and sources

Driven by increasingly stringent regulations on the legacy poly/perfluoroalkyl (PFASs), a variety of fluorinated alternatives have emerged on the market. Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays an important role in accumulation of organic pollutants due to its high altitude and wet deposition. In this study, the occurrence, spatial distribution and sources of PFASs in the TP soils were investigated. The total concentrations of PFASs ranged from 0.814-4.51 ng/g in the TP soils, with the identification of a variety of novel PFASs, including fluorotelomer sulfonates (FTSs), chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (Cl-PFESAs), and hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) homologues. Generally, the PFAS concentrations exhibited an increase trend from the west to east, and gradually increased with the altitude increasing, suggesting the impacts of human activities and mountain cold-trapping. The PFASs decreased with the increase of soil depth, but at different extents, which were related to their occurrence time, interactions with organic matters, and microbial transformation in soil. Most of the PFASs were present as free fractions in soil, particularly for the short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), implying that they were liable to be accumulated in organisms and transport to groundwater. Multiple source apportionment analyses indicated that PFASs in the soil of TP were not only derived from the local pollution, but also from the atmospheric migration influenced by Indian Monsoon and westerly winds.

Unveiling the extent of salinization to delineate the potential submarine groundwater discharge zones along the North-western coast of India

The North-West coast of India was notable for the urbanization and semiarid climate, particularly the Gujarat coastal region which was facing water crises and aquifer salinization issue. Under the light of these critical issues, the present study investigates the sources of aquifer salinization and probable location of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) using an integrated approach of major ion chemistry, statistical techniques, and isotopic signature of groundwater (GW). The evolution of GW reveals that water facies changes from Ca²⁺-Mg²⁺-Cl^- to Na⁺-Cl type from the south Gujarat towards the Gulf of Khambhat. Log-normal distribution of Cl^- and NO₃^- divulges that different pollution sources influence the GW quality. Statistical findings supplemented with Isotopic signatures, ionic ratios and cross plots identified four classes of GW, which varies with degree of anthropogenic and seawater influences. Results suggested that seawater intrusion heavily influences 42% of the total GW samples, whereas 58% samples showed the probability of SGD. The study recommends the feasible locations of check dams as a remedial measure for controlling the salinization of coastal aquifer.
