MIL series of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as novel adsorbents for heavy metals in water: A review

Dual magnetization and amination of cellulosic chains for the efficient adsorption of heavy metals

Compounds functionalized with hydroxyl and amino groups were found to have good potential for the adsorption of different ions. In this work, a new system of cellulosic chains was amended with amine substitutions and bonded to a magnetic core of NiFe2O4@SiO2 to form NiFe2O4@SiO2-cellulose-NH2 system. The prepared sample showed suitable magnetic separation and was characterized via XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDS, and TGA-DTA analyses. The adsorption potential of NiFe2O4@SiO2-cellulose-NH2 system has been investigated on the heavy metals (Cd, Ni, and Pb) removal from a synthetic wastewater environment. The results show that the magnetic property created by the magnetic core increased the recycling potential of the adsorbent and the magnetic core has a positive effect on the absorption potential of the polymer. The adsorption removal of Cd(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II) ions was studied using NiFe2O4@SiO2-cellulose-NH2 systems in different pH, temperatures, metal ion concentrations, and adsorbent dosages. The maximum adsorption capacities of single heavy metal ions were obtained as 406.44 mg/g (for Cd(II) ions), 411.63 mg/g (for Ni(II) ions), and 414.68 mg/g (for Pb(II) ions) under optimized conditions as pH = 6.5, ion concentration: 500 mg/L, adsorbent dosage: 1.2 g/L and room temperature.

Enhancing Photoreduction of Cr(VI) through a Multivalent Manganese(II)-Organic Framework Incorporating Anthracene Moieties

Exploiting a photocatalyst with high stability and excellent activity for Cr(VI) reduction under mild conditions is crucial yet challenging. Herein, the rigid aromatic multicarboxylate ligand with chromophore anthracene was selected to coordinate with multivalent metal ion manganese and to obtain a stable two-dimensional (2D) Mn-based metal-organic framework (MOF), LCUH-120, which can efficiently and quickly convert Cr(VI) into Cr(III) under light without the need for any additional photosensitizer. The efficient photosensitive anthracene group serves as a photosensitizer center and multivalent Mn(II) ion as a photocatalyst center in LCUH-120, and the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) can be realized completely in just 40 min. Specifically, the rate constant (k) and reduction rate of the Cr(VI) photocatalytic reaction can be high up to 0.134 min-1 and 2.50 mgCr(VI) g-1cata min-1 in an acidic environment (pH = 2), respectively. Compared to our previously reported three-dimensional (3D) Sm-MOF, LCUH-120 exhibits a significantly higher catalytic reaction rate, which might be ascribed to the fact that the photocatalyst center Mn node can improve the rate of electron transfer and promote the separation of holes and photogenerated electrons. In an acidic environment, the reaction mechanism can be verified through various contrast experiments and theoretical simulations.

Advanced materials for micro/nanorobotics

Autonomous micro/nanorobots capable of performing programmed missions are at the forefront of next-generation micromachinery. These small robotic systems are predominantly constructed using functional components sourced from micro- and nanoscale materials; therefore, combining them with various advanced materials represents a pivotal direction toward achieving a higher level of intelligence and multifunctionality. This review provides a comprehensive overview of advanced materials for innovative micro/nanorobotics, focusing on the five families of materials that have witnessed the most rapid advancements over the last decade: two-dimensional materials, metal-organic frameworks, semiconductors, polymers, and biological cells. Their unique physicochemical, mechanical, optical, and biological properties have been integrated into micro/nanorobots to achieve greater maneuverability, programmability, intelligence, and multifunctionality in collective behaviors. The design and fabrication methods for hybrid robotic systems are discussed based on the material categories. In addition, their promising potential for powering motion and/or (multi-)functionality is described and the fundamental principles underlying them are explained. Finally, their extensive use in a variety of applications, including environmental remediation, (bio)sensing, therapeutics, etc., and remaining challenges and perspectives for future research are discussed.

Efficient Nickel and Cobalt Recovery by Metal-Organic Framework-Based Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMM-MOFs)

Green energy transition has supposed to give a huge boost to the electric vehicle rechargeable battery market. This has generated a compelling demand for raw materials, such as cobalt and nickel, which are key common constituents in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their existing mining protocols and the concentrated localization of such ores have made cobalt and nickel mineral conundrums, and their supplies experience shortages, which threaten to slow the progress of the renewable energy transition. Aiming to contribute to the sustainable recycling of these valuable metals from LIBs and wastewater, in this work, we explore the use of four mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) embedding different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., MIL-53(Al), MIL-53(Fe), MIL-101(Fe), and {SrIICuII 6[(S,S)-serimox]3(OH)2(H2O)}·39H2O (SrCu 6 Ser) in polyether sulfone (PES), for the recovery of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) metal cations from mixed cobalt-nickel aqueous solutions containing common interfering ions. Whereas the neat PES membrane slightly contributes to the adsorption of metal ions, showing reduced removal efficiency values of 10.2 and 9.5% for Ni(II) and Co(II), respectively, the inclusion of MOFs in the polymeric matrix substantially improves the adsorption performances. The four MOF@PES MMMs efficiently remove these metals from water, with MIL-53(Al)@PES being the one that presents better performance, with a removal efficiency up to 95% of Ni(II) and Co(II). Remarkably, SrCu 6 Ser@PES exhibits outstanding selectivity toward cobalt(II) cations compared to of nickel(II) ones, with removal efficiencies of 63.7 and 15.1% for Co(II) and Ni(II), respectively. Overall, the remarkable efficiencies, versatility, high environmental robustness, and cost-effective synthesis shown by this family of MOF@PES MMMs situate them among the best adsorbents for the extraction of this kind of contaminants.

Tuning strategies of MIL metal organic frameworks for adsorptive removal of formaldehyde in air

Materials Institute Lavoisier (MIL) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are known for their potential to adsorb gaseous organic pollutants. This study explores the synergistic effects between the selection of central metals (e.g., titanium, iron, and aluminum) and the incorporation of -NH2 groups in terms of adsorption efficiency against gaseous formaldehyde (FA). A group of the pristine MIL MOFs is synthesized using three different metals (i.e., titanium, iron, and aluminum) and terephthalic acid along with their NH2 derivatives using 2-aminoterephthalic acid. Among the pristine forms, MIL-125(Ti) achieves the highest FA adsorption capacity (Q) of 26.96 mg g-1 and a partition coefficient (PC) of 0.0898 mol kg-1 Pa-1. Further, amination significantly improves the FA adsorption potential of NH2-MIL-125(Ti) with a Q value of 91.22 mg g-1 (PC = 0.3038 mol kg-1 Pa-1). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy reveals that the FA adsorption of plain MILs should be governed primarily by physisorption. In contrast, FA adsorption of NH2-MILs appears to be regulated by both physisorption and chemisorption, while the latter being affected mainly through FA-NH2 interactions (Schiff base reactions). These findings provide valuable insights into the utility of aminated MIL sorbents, possibly toward the efficient management of indoor air quality.

Magnetic materials as adsorbents for the pre-concentration and separation of active ingredients from herbal medicine

Herbal medicine (HM) is crucial in disease management and contains complex compounds with few active pharmacological ingredients, presenting challenges in quality control of raw materials and formulations. Effective separation, identification, and analysis of active components are vital for HM efficacy. Traditional methods like liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction are time-consuming and environmentally concerning, with limitations such as sorbent issues, pressure, and clogging. Magnetic solid-phase extraction uses magnetic sorbents for targeted analyte separation and enrichment, offering rapid, pressure-free separation. However, inorganic magnetic particles' aggregation and oxidation, as well as lack of selectivity, have led to the use of various coatings and modifications to enhance specificity and selectivity for complex herbal samples. This review delves into magnetic composites in HM pretreatment, specifically focusing on encapsulated or modified magnetic nanoparticles and materials like silica, ionic liquids, graphene family derivatives, carbon nanotubes, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and molecularly imprinted polymers.

Effects of Fe(II) bio-oxidation rate and alkali control on schwertmannite microstructure and adsorption of oxyanions: Characteristics, performance and mechanism

Schwertmannite has attracted increasing interest for its excellent sorption of oxyanions such as AsO43-, CrO42-, and Sb(OH)6-. Controlling biomineralization by adjusting the Fe(II) oxidation rate and implementing alkali control can enhance the yield and adsorption performance of schwertmannite. However, the adsorption improvement mechanism is still unclear. The morphology, crystallinity, specific surface area (SSA) and oxyanion adsorption of schwertmannite synthesized with alkali control of solution pH and different Fe(II) oxidation rates were analyzed in this study. The differences in the adsorption mechanisms of As(V), Cr(VI) and Sb(V) on schwertmannite obtained under different synthesis conditions were also studied. Reducing the Fe(II) oxidation rate or maintaining the solution pH through alkali control significantly increased the SSA of schwertmannite and the proportion of outer-sphere sulfate. Alkali-controlled schwertmannite (Sch-C) exhibited superior As(V) and Sb(V) adsorption performance and slightly greater Cr(VI) adsorption than non-alkali-controlled schwertmannite. The As(V) and Sb(V) adsorption capacities of Sch-C greatly improved because the ultra-high SSA increased the surface hydroxyl content and reduced the passivation effect of amorphous precipitates on the mineral surface, allowing continuous sulfate exchange at inner mineral sites. An increased surface hydroxyl content had little effect on Cr(VI) adsorption, but an increased proportion of outer-sphere sulfate caused a slight increase in Cr(VI) adsorption. Sb(V) has a stronger hydroxyl exchange ability than As(V), but due to its octahedral structure, it exchanges only with outer-sphere sulfate on schwertmannite and hardly exchanges with inner-sphere sulfate.

Simple synthesis of peanut shell-like MoCoFe-HO@CoMo-LDH for efficient alkaline oxygen evolution reaction

Due to the depletion of fossil energy on earth, it is crucial to develop resource rich and efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we synthesized an efficient and economical electrocatalyst using a simple self-assembly strategy. Firstly, rod-shaped MIL-88A was synthesized by hydrothermal method. Then, the surface of MIL-88A was functionalized and encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) by hydrothermal method. The combination of MIL-88A and ZIF-67 resulted in a slight ion-exchange reaction between Co2+ and the surface of MIL-88A to generate CoFe-LDH@ZIF-67 core-shell structure. Afterwards, in the presence of Mo6+, ZIF-67 was converted into CoMo-nanocages through ion-exchange reactions, forming a core-shell structure of MoCoFe hydr (oxy) oxide@CoMo-LDH (MoCoFe-HO@CoMo-LDH). Due to the advantages of core-shell structure and composition, this material exhibits excellent OER characteristics, with a small Tafel slope (45.11 mV dec-1) and low overpotential (324 mV) at 10 mA cm-2. It exhibits good stability in alkaline media. This research work provides a novel approach for the development of efficient and economical non-precious metal electrocatalysts.

Fe-based MOFs as promising adsorbents and photocatalysts for re-use water contained arsenic: Strategies and challenges

Arsenic (As) contaminated water, especially groundwater reservoirs, is a major issue worldwide owing to its hazardous consequences on human health and the global environment issues. Also, irrigating agricultural fields with As-contaminated water not only produces an accumulation of As in the soil but also compromises food safety due to As entering into agricultural products. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop an efficient method for As removal in water. Fe-based MOFs have attained special attention due to their low toxicity, high water stability, better physical and chemical properties, and high abundance of iron. The arsenic species removal by Fe-MOF follows the adsorption and oxidation mechanism where As (III) converts into As (V). Moreover, the adsorption mechanism is facilitated by electrostatic interactions, H-bonding, acid-base interaction, hydrophobic interactions, van der Waals forces, π-π stacking interactions, and coordinative bindings responsible for Fe-O-As bond generation. This review thoroughly recapitulates and analyses recent advancements in the facile synthesis and potential application of Fe-based MOF adsorbents for the elimination of As ions. The most commonly employed hydro/solvothermal, ultrasonic, microwave-assisted, mechanochemical, and electrochemical synthesis for Fe-MOF has been discussed along with their adsorptive and oxidative mechanisms involved in arsenic removal. The effects of factors like pH and coexisting ions have also been discussed. Lastly, the article also proposed the prospects for developing the application of Fe-based MOF in treating As-contaminated water.

Modification strategies for semiconductor metal oxide nanomaterials applied to chemiresistive NOx gas sensors: A review

Semiconductor metal oxides (SMOs) nanomaterials are a category of sensing materials that are widely applied to chemiresistive NOx gas sensors. However, there is much space to improve the sensing performance of SMOs nanomaterials. Therefore, how to improve the sensing performance of SMOs nanomaterials for NOx gases has always attracted the interest of researchers. Up to now, there are few reviews focus on the modification strategies of SMOs which applied to NOx gas sensors. In order to compensate for the limitation, this review summarizes the existing modification strategies of SMOs, hoping to provide researchers a view of the research progress in this filed as comprehensive as possible. This review focuses on the progress of the modification of SMOs nanomaterials for chemiresistive NOx (NO, NO2) gas sensors, including the morphology modulation of SMOs, compositing SMOs, loading noble metals, doping metal ions, compositing with carbon nanomaterials, compositing with biomass template, and compositing with MXene, MOFs, conducting polymers. The mechanism of each strategy to enhance the NOx sensing performance of SMOs-based nanomaterials is also discussed and summarized. In addition, the limitations of some of the modification strategies and ways to address them are discussed. Finally, future perspectives for SMOs-based NOx gas sensors are also discussed.

Sensing lead ions in water: a comprehensive review on strategies and sensor materials

It is well-known fact that elevated lead ions (Pb2+), the third most toxic among heavy metal ions in aqueous systems, pose a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems when they exceed permissible limits. Pb2+ is commonly found in industrial waste and fertilizers, contaminating water sources and subsequently entering the human body, causing various adverse health conditions. Unlike being expelled, Pb2+ accumulates within the body, posing potential health risks. The harmful impact of presence of Pb2+ in water have prompted researchers to diligently work toward maintaining water quality. Recognizing the importance of Pb2+, this review article makes a sincere and effective effort to address the issues associated with Pb2+. This overview article gives insights into various sensing approaches to detect Pb2+ in water using different sensing materials, including 2-dimensional materials, thiols, quantum dots, and polymers. Herein, different sensing approaches such as electrochemical, optical, field effect transistor-based, micro-electromechanical system-based, and chemi resistive are thoroughly explained. Field effect transistor-based and chemiresistive work on similar principles and are compared on the basis of their fabrication processes and sensing capabilities. In conclusion, future directions for chemiresistive sensors in Pb2+ detection are proposed, emphasizing their simplicity, portability, straightforward functionality, and ease of fabrication. Notably, it sheds light on various thiol and ligand compounds and coupling strategies utilized in Pb2+ detection. This comprehensive study is expected to benefit individuals engaged in Pb2+ detection.

A new thiacalix[4]arene-based metal-organic framework as an efficient electrochemical sensor for trace detection of Cd2+ and Pb2

Heavy metal ions (HMIs) can lead to serious harm to human health and ecological environment. Thus, developing an efficient detection method for HMIs is extremely necessary. Herein, a new thiacalix[4]arene-based metal-organic framework (MOF) [Co2(L1)(TPA)2]·DMA·3CH3OH·H2O (Co-LTPA) (L1 = thiacalix[4]arene-based ligand and H2TPA = terephthalic acid) was successfully synthesized. The electrochemical detection platform (Co-LTPA/GCE) was acquired, and Co-LTPA/GCE featured ultrasensitive detection of HMIs with greatly low limits of detection (LODs) of 0.119 nM for Cd2+ and 0.279 nM for Pb2+ as well as wide linear ranges of 0.08-5.8 μM for Cd2+ and 0.01-6.0 μM for Pb2+. More importantly, the Co-LTPA/GCE sensor was employed to detect foods (milk, honey and orange juice) and water samples (tap water, lake water and drinking water) with satisfactory recoveries, proving the sensor reliability in practical applications. This work provided an example that the functional electrochemical Co-LTPA/GCE sensor was employed for Cd2+ and Pb2+ detection.

Facile synthesis of TiO2@ZnO nanoparticles for enhanced removal of methyl orange and indigo carmine dyes: Adsorption, kinetics

Water pollution represents one of the most important problems affecting the health of living organisms, so it was necessary to work on the formation of active materials to get rid of pollutants. In this study, Titanium dioxide (TiO2) doping Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposites were produced via simple sonication method at 500 Hz in ethanol medium. At different weight concentrations (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 %). The morphology, structure configuration, chemical bonding, crystalline phase, and surface properties of obtained nanocomposites were characterized via FESEM, BET, XRD, XPS, RAMAN and FTIR instrumentation. The nanocomposites were employed as an adsorbent to eliminate the methyl orange (MO) and Indigo Carmine (IC) dyes from an aqueous solution. Batch removal experiments revealed that the elimination of MO and IC dyes by the TiZnO surface was pH and doping Ti concentration-dependent, with maximum removal occurring at pH = 7 for MO and pH = 3 for IC contaminants at 10 % doping Ti concentration (Ti (10 %)@ZnO). Langmuir model fit the absorptive removal of MO and IC dyes into the Ti (10 %)@ZnO surface well. The maximal removal capacity of Ti (10 %)@ZnO nanocomposite was found to be 994.24 mg. g-1 for MO and 305.39 mg. g-1 for IC. The Ti (10 %)@ZnO nanocomposite showed remarkable high stability towards the removal of both dyes through consecutive four cycles.

Research progress in the detection of trace heavy metal ions in food samples

Food safety is the basis for ensuring human survival and development. The threat of heavy metal ions to food safety has become a social concern with the rapid growth of the economy and the accompanying environmental pollution. Some heavy metal ions are highly toxic even at trace levels and pose significant health risks to humans. Therefore, ultrasensitive detection of heavy metal ions in food samples is important. In this mini-review, recent advances in the analytical methods based on nanomaterials for detecting trace heavy metal ions in food samples are summarized in three categories: electrochemical, colorimetric, and fluorescent methods. We present the features and sensing mechanisms of these three methods, along with typical examples to illustrate their application in the detection of heavy metal ions in foods. This mini-review ends with a discussion of current challenges and future prospects of these approaches for sensing heavy metal ions. The review will help readers understand the principles of these methods, thereby promoting the development of new analytical methods for the detection of heavy metal ions in food samples.

Influence of Pressure and Temperature on the Flexible Behavior of Iron-Based MIL-53 with the CO2 Host: A Comprehensive Experimental and DFT Study

This research focuses on developing MIL-53-type compounds with Fe obtained with ligands derived from PET waste, followed by the controlled addition of hydrofluoric acid (HF). Incorporating HF into the MOF structure induced substantial changes in the material textural properties, resulting in a significant change in CO2 adsorption. Furthermore, a distinctive structural alteration (breathing effect) was observed in the CO2 isotherms at different temperatures; these structural changes have not been observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) because this characterization has been performed at room temperature, whereas the adsorption experiments were conducted at 260, 273, and 303 K and different pressures. Subsequently, DFT studies were performed to investigate the CO2-filling mechanisms and elucidate the material respiration effect. This approach offers promising opportunities for sustainable materials with improved gas adsorption properties.

One-step synthesis of a core-shell structured biochar using algae (Chlorella) powder and ferric sulfate for immobilizing Hg(II)

Mercury (Hg) pollution poses a significant environmental challenge. One promising method for its removal is the sorption of mercuric ions using biochar. FeS-doped biochar (FBC) exhibits effective mercury adsorption, however may release excess iron into the surrounding water. To address this issue, a novel magnetic pyrrhotite/magnetite-doped biochar with a core-shell structure was synthesized for the adsorption of 2-valent mercury (Hg(II)). The proposed synthesis process involved the use of algae powder and ferric sulfate in a one-step method. By varying the ratio of ferric sulfate and alga powder (within the range of 0.18 - 2.5) had a notable impact on the composition of FBC. As the ferric sulfate content increased, the FBC exhibited a higher concentration of oxygen-containing groups. To assess the adsorption capacity, Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to the experimental data. The most effective adsorption was achieved with FBC-4, reaching a maximum capacity (Qm) of 95.51 mg/g. In particular, at low Hg(II) concentrations, FBC-5 demonstrated the ability to reduce Hg(II) concentrations to less than 0.05 mg/L within 30 min. Additionally, the stability of FBC was confirmed within the pH range of 3.8 - 7.2. The study also introduced a model to analyze the adsorption preference for different Hg(II) species. Calomel was identified in the mercury saturated FBC, whereas the core-shell structure exhibited excellent conductivity, which most likely contributed to the minimal release of iron. In summary, this research presents a novel and promising method for synthesizing core-shell structured biochar and provides a novel approach to explore the adsorption contribution of different metal species.

Heavy metal sequestration from wastewater by metal-organic frameworks: a state-of-the-art review of recent progress

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater due to their tunable structures, high surface areas, and exceptional adsorption capacities. This review meticulously examines and summarizes recent advancements in producing and utilizing MOF-based adsorbents for sequestering heavy metal ions from water. It begins by outlining and contrasting commonly employed methods for synthesizing MOFs, such as solvothermal, microwave, electrochemical, ultrasonic, and mechanochemical. Rather than delving into the specifics of adsorption process parameters, the focus shifts to analyzing the adsorption capabilities and underlying mechanisms against critical metal(loid) ions like chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury under various environmental conditions. Additionally, this article discusses strategies to optimize MOF performance, scale-up production, and address environmental implications. The comprehensive review aims to enhance the understanding of MOF-based adsorption for heavy metal remediation and stimulate further research in this critical field. In brief, this review article presents a comprehensive overview of the contemporary information on MOFs as an effective adsorbent and the challenges being faced by these adsorbents for heavy metal mitigation (including stability, cost, environmental issues, and optimization), targeting to develop a vital reference for future MOF research.

Innovative recovery of matrix layered double hydroxide from simulated acid mine wastewater for the removal of copper and cadmium from wastewater

This study innovatively added biochar to optimize regulation in the neutralization process of simulated acid mine drainage (AMD) and recovered a new type of matrix layered double hydroxides (MLDH), which can be used to remove copper (Cu(II)) and cadmium (Cd(II)) from wastewater. A series of batch experiments show that MLDH with strong selective removal ability of Cu(II) and Cd(II) can be successfully obtained by adding biochar (BC) at pH = 5 end in the neutralization process. Kinetic and isotherm modeling studies indicated that the removal of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by the MLDH was a chemical multilayer adsorption process. The removal mechanism of Cu(II) and Cd(II) was further analyzed through related characterization analysis with contribution rate calculation: the removal rates of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by ion exchange were 42.7% and 26%, while that by precipitation were 34.5% and 49.9%, respectively. This study can provide a theoretical reference and experimental basis for the recovery and utilization of valuable by-products in AMD and the treatment of heavy metal wastewater.

Progress in the Elimination of Organic Contaminants in Wastewater by Activation Persulfate over Iron-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The release of organic contaminants has grown to be a major environmental concern and a threat to the ecology of water bodies. Persulfate-based Advanced Oxidation Technology (PAOT) is effective at eliminating hazardous pollutants and has an extensive spectrum of applications. Iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) and their derivatives have exhibited great advantages in activating persulfate for wastewater treatment. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of recent research progress on the significant potential of Fe-MOFs for removing antibiotics, organic dyes, phenols, and other contaminants from aqueous environments. Firstly, multiple approaches for preparing Fe-MOFs, including the MIL and ZIF series were introduced. Subsequently, removal performance of pollutants such as antibiotics of sulfonamides and tetracyclines (TC), organic dyes of rhodamine B (RhB) and acid orange 7 (AO7), phenols of phenol and bisphenol A (BPA) by various Fe-MOFs was compared. Finally, different degradation mechanisms, encompassing free radical degradation pathways and non-free radical degradation pathways were elucidated. This review explores the synthesis methods of Fe-MOFs and their application in removing organic pollutants from water bodies, providing insights for further refining the preparation of Fe-MOFs.

Comparative study of efficiencies of purification of cadmium contaminated irrigation water by different purification systems

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice threats food safety and human health. Control of Cd pollution has become an urgent need. Most existing studies on heavy metal pollution control have focused on industrial wastewater and few on irrigation water. Some researchers have found ecological ditches, plant ponds and constructed wetlands have the potential of treating heavy metal contaminated irrigation water, but they examined only one of the methods and the validity needs to be verified by field studies. Our study has filled the gap by combining the methods and using field experiments. We examined efficiencies of removal of Cadmium from irrigation water by 14 different combinations of ecological ditches, plant ponds, and constructed wetlands using field experiments. The effects of the purification on Cd concentration in paddy soil and rice grains were also examined. Results showed that there were significant differences among efficiencies of purification of Cd contaminated irrigation water using different systems and that pH, chemical form of Cd in irrigation water, vegetation coverage and biomass of aquatic plants significantly affect the efficiency. Of the 14 purification systems, seven resulted in the concentration of Cd in the effluent water meeting the National Standard for Irrigation Water Quality (GB5084-2021) for all days of the experiment period. The highest amount and rate of Cd removal were achieved by the combination of two-stage ecological ditch, two-stage plant pond, and one-stage constructed wetland, while the highest removal amount and rate per 100 m2 was achieved by the combination of one-stage plant pond and one-stage constructed wetland. Considering purification efficiency, area of coverage, and cost of construction and maintenance, we suggest that combination of plant pond and constructed wetland be a priority choice for purification of Cd pollution in irrigation water. Compared to the control data collected from rice grain and paddy soil irrigated by unpurified water, Cd concentration in rice grain and paddy soil irrigated by purified water declined by 5.08-19.42 % and 30.93-77.15 % respectively. All results showed that removal of Cd contamination from irrigation water effectively controlled cadmium pollution in rice grain and paddy soil. Our study not only contributes to pollution control practice, but also warrants further investigation of the mechanisms of how the treatment systems work. The most efficient method we identified could be applied locally, regionally and in areas of similar topography, climate, soil, vegetation, agriculture, and heavy metal pollution.

Education robot object detection with a brain-inspired approach integrating Faster R-CNN, YOLOv3, and semi-supervised learning

The development of education robots has brought tremendous potential and opportunities to the field of education. These intelligent machines can interact with students in classrooms and learning environments, providing personalized educational support. To enable education robots to fulfill their roles, they require accurate object detection capabilities to perceive and understand the surrounding environment of students, identify targets, and interact with them. Object detection in complex environments remains challenging, as classrooms or learning scenarios involve various objects, backgrounds, and lighting conditions. Improving the accuracy and efficiency of object detection is crucial for the development of education robots. This paper introduces the progress of an education robot's object detection based on a brain-inspired heuristic method, which integrates Faster R-CNN, YOLOv3, and semi-supervised learning. By combining the strengths of these three techniques, we can improve the accuracy and efficiency of object detection in education robot systems. In this work, we integrate two popular object detection algorithms: Faster R-CNN and YOLOv3. We conduct a series of experiments on the task of education robot object detection. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed optimization algorithm significantly outperforms individual algorithms in terms of accuracy and real-time performance. Moreover, through semi-supervised learning, we achieve better performance with fewer labeled samples. This will provide education robots with more accurate perception capabilities, enabling better interaction with students and delivering personalized educational experiences. It will drive the development of the field of education robots, offering innovative and personalized solutions for education.

Polymeric Materials in Speciation Analysis Based on Solid-Phase Extraction

Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure. This review presents an update on the application of polymeric materials in solid-phase extraction used in nonchromatographic methods for speciation analysis.

Polyethylenimine Grafted onto Nano-NiFe2O4@SiO2 for the Removal of CrO42-, Ni2+, and Pb2+ Ions from Aqueous Solutions

Polyethyleneimine (PEI) has been reported to have good potential for the adsorption of metal ions. In this work, PEI was covalently bound to NiFe2O4@SiO2 nanoparticles to form the new adsorbent NiFe2O4@SiO2-PEI. The material allowed for magnetic separation and was characterized via powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), showing the pattern of the NiFe2O4 core and an amorphous shell. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed irregular shaped particles with sizes ranging from 50 to 100 nm, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) showed high C and N contents of 36 and 39%, respectively. This large amount of PEI in the materials was confirmed by thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), showing a mass loss of about 80%. Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed characteristic resonances of PEI dominating the spectrum. The adsorption of CrO42-, Ni2+, and Pb2+ ions from aqueous solutions was studied at different pH, temperatures, metal ion concentrations, and adsorbent dosages. The maximum adsorption capacities of 149.3, 156.7, and 161.3 mg/g were obtained for CrO42-, Ni2+, and Pb2+, respectively, under optimum conditions using 0.075 g of the adsorbent material at a 250 mg/L ion concentration, pH = 6.5, and room temperature.

Thiol-Functionalized MIL-100(Fe)/Device for the Removal of Heavy Metals in Water

The preparation of a functional device based on a functionalized MIL-100(Fe) metal-organic framework for the solid-phase extraction of heavy metals is reported. By a simple and easy straightforward grafting procedure, a thiol-functionalized MIL-100(Fe) material (MIL-100(Fe)-SH) with a S/Fe ratio of 0.80 and a surface area of 840 m2 g-1 was obtained. MIL-100(Fe)-SH exhibited a higher Hg(II) extraction (96 ± 5%) than that of MIL-100(Fe) (78 ± 4%) due to the interaction between thiol groups and Hg(II) ions. For practical applications, the obtained MIL-100(Fe)-SH was integrated by a simple method to a 3D printed support based on a matrix of interconnected cubes using poly(vinylidene fluoride) as binder, obtaining a functional device that simultaneously acts as stirrer and sorbent. The developed device showed high efficiency for the removal of Hg(II), good reusability, and excellent performance for the simultaneous preconcentration and further detection and quantification of Hg(II), Pb(II), and As(V) in tap, well, and lake water samples.

Advances, challenges, and prospects in microalgal-bacterial symbiosis system treating heavy metal wastewater

Heavy metal (HM) pollution, particularly in its ionic form in water bodies, is a chronic issue threatening environmental security and human health. The microalgal-bacterial symbiosis (MABS) system, as the basis of water ecosystems, has the potential to treat HM wastewater in a sustainable manner, with the advantages of environmental friendliness and carbon sequestration. However, the differences between laboratory studies and engineering practices, including the complexity of pollutant compositions and extreme environmental conditions, limit the applications of the MABS system. Additionally, the biomass from the MABS system containing HMs requires further disposal or recycling. This review summarized the recent advances of the MABS system treating HM wastewater, including key mechanisms, influence factors related to HM removal, and the tolerance threshold values of the MABS system to HM toxicity. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects of the MABS system in treating actual HM wastewater are analyzed and discussed, and suggestions for biochar preparation from the MABS biomass containing HMs are provided. This review provides a reference point for the MABS system treating HM wastewater and the corresponding challenges faced by future engineering practices.

In-situ integrated electrodes of FeM-MIL-88/CP for simultaneous ultra-sensitive detection of dopamine and acetaminophen based on crystal engineering strategy

Designing and exploiting integrated electrodes is the current inevitable trend to realize the sustainable development of electrochemical sensors. In this work, a series of integrated electrodes prepared by in situ growing the second metal ion-modulated FeM-MIL-88 (M = Mn, Co and Ni) on carbon paper (CP) (FeM-MIL-88/CP) were constructed as the electrochemical sensing platforms for the simultaneous detection of dopamine (DA) and acetaminophen (AC). Among them, FeMn-MIL-88/CP exhibited the best sensing behaviors and achieved the trace detection for DA and AC owing to synergistic catalysis between Fe3+, Mn2+ and CP. The electrochemical sensor based on FeMn-MIL-88/CP showed ultra-high sensitivities of 2.85 and 7.46 μA μM-1 cm-2 and extremely low detection limits of 0.082 and 0.015 μM for DA and AC, respectively. The FeMn-MIL-88/CP also exhibited outstanding anti-interference ability, repeatability and stability, and satisfactory results were also obtained in the detection of actual samples. The mechanism of Mn2+ modulation on the electrocatalytic activity of FeMn-MIL-88/CP towards DA and AC was revealed for the first time through the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Good adsorption energy and rapid electron transfer worked synergistically to improve the sensing performances of DA and AC. This work not only provided a high-performance integrated electrode for the sensing field, but also demonstrated the influencing factors of electrochemical sensing at the molecular levels, laying a theoretical foundation for the sustainable development of subsequent electrochemical sensing.

Superior Removal of Vanadium(V) from Simulated Groundwater with a Fe-Based Metal-Organic Framework Immobilized on Cotton Fibers

A suitable adsorbent is essential in the process of removing hazardous vanadium(V) from actual groundwater. In this work, MIL-88A(Fe)/cotton (MC) was employed to eliminate V(V) from simulated vanadium-contaminated groundwater. The findings demonstrated that MC exhibited an exceptional performance in removing V(V), displaying a maximum adsorption capacity of 218.71 mg g-1. MC exhibits great promise as an adsorbent for V(V) elimination in an extensive pH range spanning 3 to 11. Even in the presence of high levels of competing ions such as Cl-, NO3-, and SO42-, MC demonstrated remarkable specificity in adsorbing V(V). The results of column experiments and co-occurring ions influence tests indicate that MC is a potential candidate for effectively treating actual vanadium-contaminated groundwater. The effluent could meet the vanadium content restriction of 50 μg L-1 required in China's drinking water sources. Regeneration of MC can be performed easily without experiencing significant capacity loss. The results obtained from this research indicate the promising potential of MC in mitigating vanadium pollution.

Two 3D Ln(III)-MOFs Based on Phosphineoxide Ligand: Synthesis, Structure Luminescent and Photocatalytic Properties

Two new 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) ZZUT1 and ZZUT2 were prepared through the reaction of tris-(4-carboxylphenyl) phosphineoxide (H3TPO) ligand with nitrate of neodymium and praseodymium by solvothermal method. The structure, fluorescence and photocatalytic properties of ZZUT1 and ZZUT2 were studied. The crystalline structure of two 3D Ln(III)-MOFs both exhibit triclinic system and P-1 space group. The results of fluorescence analysis showed that two 3D Ln(III)-MOFs could selectively recognize acetone molecule through the fluorescence quenching mechanism. Meanwhile, ZZUT1 and ZZUT2 showed good adsorption and degradation ability on organic dye methylene blue (MB) in photocatalytic condition, and the degradation efficiency can reach to more than 90%.

Current status and prospects of MIL-based MOF materials for biomedicine applications

This article mainly reviews the biomedicine applications of two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe). These MOFs have advantages such as high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, and chemical stability, which make them widely used in drug delivery systems. The article first introduces the properties of these two materials and then discusses their applications in drug transport, antibacterial therapy, and cancer treatment. In cancer treatment, drug delivery systems based on MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe) have made significant progress in chemotherapy (CT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), immunotherapy (IT), nano-enzyme therapy, and related combined therapy. Overall, these MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe) materials have tremendous potential and diverse applications in the field of biomedicine.

State-of-the-art adsorption and adsorptive filtration based technologies for the removal of trace elements: A critical review

Water and wastewater are contaminated with various types of trace elements that are released from industrial activities. Their presence, at concentrations above the permissible limit, will cause severe negative impacts on human health and the environment. Due to their cost-effectiveness, simple design, high efficiency, and selectivity, adsorption, and adsorptive filtration are techniques that have received lots of attention as compared to other water treatment techniques. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies help to understand the mechanisms of adsorption and adsorption rates, which can be used to develop and optimize different adsorbents. This state-of-the-art review provides and combines the advancements in different conventional and advanced adsorbents, biosorbents, and adsorptive membranes for the removal of trace elements from water streams. Herein, this review discusses the sources of different trace elements and their impact on human health. The review also covers the adsorption technique with a focus on various advanced adsorbents, their adsorption capacities, and adsorption isotherm modeling in detail. In addition, biosorption is critically discussed together with its mechanisms and biosorption isotherms. In the end, the application of various advanced adsorptive membranes is discussed and their comparison with adsorbents and biosorbents is systematically presented.

Enabling simultaneous valorization of tannery effluent and waste plastic via sustainable preparation of Cr-BDC MOFs for water adsorption

Advanced materials undergo a complex and lengthy process of maturation for scaling up and deployment, mainly due to the high cost of their precursors. Therefore, it is highly desirable to fabricate highly valuable advanced porous solid-state materials, with proven applicability, by sustainably combining organic and inorganic waste materials as precursors. This study successfully demonstrates the preparation of Cr-terephthalate Metal-Organic Frameworks (Cr-BDC MOFs) by combining metal salt and organic linker extracted from tannery effluent and waste plastic bottles. The waste from tanneries was used as the source of Cr(III), while terephthalic acid was obtained from the alkaline hydrolysis of plastic bottles. Appropriate extraction and assembly processes led to the functional Cr-BDC MOFs, MIL-101(Cr) and MIL-53(Cr). The prepared MOFs showed similar properties (surface area, hydrolytic and thermal stability, and water adsorption performance) to similar MOFs synthesized from pure commercial-grade precursors, as confirmed by N2 sorption, XRD, TGA, and water adsorption experiments. The advancements made in this study represent significant progress in overcoming the bottleneck of MOF production cost efficiency via applying sustainability principles and pave the way for easy scaling-up and maturation of MOF-based processes, for air dehumidification and water harvesting as a case study.

Eu3+ functionalized metal-organic framework for selective monitoring of emerging environmental pollutants non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as a new water pollutant emerging in recent years, has potential hazards to the environment. The difficult degradation characteristics of NSAIDs lead to long-term accumulation in the natural environment, which will inevitably cause incalculable damage to human health. In this work, for practical application considerations, MIL-53(Al) type MOF [Al(OH)(TDC)]‧1.5H₂O‧0.7DMF (MIL-53-TDC, TDC = 2,5-thiophene dicarboxylic acid) with good water stability is selected as the sensing main body. The ligand TDC was chosen for two reasons: one is as an antenna ligand, which can sensitize Eu³⁺ ions to emit characteristic fluorescence; the other is as binding site that the sulfur atoms on the thiophene ring can introduce Eu³⁺ ions through coordination. Thus, Eu³⁺ functionalized MIL-53-TDC hybrid materials (Eu@MIL-53-TDC) were developed as a fluorescence sensor for the detection of two kinds of NSAIDs, S-ibuprofen (S-IBP) and diclofenac (DCF). The concentration range of S-IBP and DCF detected by the prepared sensors is 0.001-0.07 mM (LOD = 0.5 μM) and 0.0005-0.1 mM (LOD = 0.2 μM), respectively. Moreover, this sensor not only can achieve rapid (3 min) and sensitive analysis of these two NSAIDs but also has a satisfactory recovery for the detection of S-IBP and DCF in serum and tap water.

An Eco-Friendly Adsorbent Based on Bacterial Cellulose and Vermiculite Composite for Efficient Removal of Methylene Blue and Sulfanilamide

In this work, a novel composite of bacterial cellulose (BC) and expanded vermiculite (EVMT) composite was used to adsorb dyes and antibiotics. The pure BC and BC/EVMT composite were characterized using SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS and TGA. The BC/EVMT composite exhibited a microporous structure, providing abundant adsorption sites for target pollutants. The adsorption performance of the BC/EVMT composite was investigated for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and sulfanilamide (SA) from an aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of BC/ENVMT for MB increased with increasing pH, while the adsorption capacity for SA decreased with increasing pH. The equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. As a result, the adsorption of MB and SA by the BC/EVMT composite was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm well, indicating a monolayer adsorption process on a homogeneous surface. The maximum adsorption capacity of the BC/EVMT composite was found to be 92.16 mg/g for MB and 71.53 mg/g for SA, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of both MB and SA on the BC/EVMT composite showed significant characteristics of a pseudo-second-order model. Considering the low cost and high efficiency of BC/EVMT, it is expected to be a promising adsorbent for the removal of dyes and antibiotics from wastewater. Thus, it can serve as a valuable tool in sewage treatment to improve water quality and reduce environmental pollution.

MIL-101(Fe) based biomass as permeable reactive barrier applied to EK-PRB remediation of antimony contaminated soil

Numerous studies have demonstrated that electrokinetic-permeable reactive barrier (EK-PRB) can be used for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils, and their remediation efficiency is mainly determined by the filler material selected. By growing MIL-101(Fe) in situ on hollow loofah fiber (HLF), a novel material entitled HLF@MIL-101(Fe) was developed. The morphological characteristics and loading conditions were investigated, the adsorption characteristics were analyzed, and finally the synthesized composite material was applied to treat antimony-contaminated soil with EK-PRB as the reaction medium. The results show that MIL-101(Fe) is stably loaded on HLF. The adsorption capacity of Sb(III) can reach up to 82.31 mg g^-1, and the adsorption is in accordance with the quasi-secondary kinetic model, which indicates that chemisorption is dominant. The isothermal adsorption model indicates that the adsorption form of HLF@MIL-101(Fe) is mainly monolayer adsorption with more uniform adsorption binding energy. In the EK-PRB experiment, when ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is used as the cathodic electrolyte, it can effectively enhance the electromigration and electroosmotic effects, and the overall remediation efficiency of the soil is increased by 38.12% compared with the citric acid (CA) group. These demonstrate the feasibility of HLF@MIL-101(Fe) in collaboration with EK-PRB in the treatment of antimony-contaminated soil.

A novel Zn/Eu-MOF for the highly sensitive, reversible and visualized sensing of ofloxacin residues in pork, beef and fish

The study investigates a bimetallic organic framework (Zn/Eu-MOF) based fluorescent probe for visual detection of ofloxacin (OFL) in pork, beef and fish. The developed sensing probe recognizes OFL through internal filtration and cation-π interaction between OFL and Zn/Eu-MOF, resulting in a distinct color change from orange-red to light green. The content of OFL can be determined through RGB analysis by a mobile-phone. The developed sensing probe offers several advantages such as broad linear range (0.1 ∼ 80 μM), rapid response time (30 s), low detection line (0.44 μM). The effectiveness of the sensing probe can last for five rounds with good recovery. Moreover, the application of the sensing probe on pork, beef and fish samples are reliable, with recoveries ranging from 93.4 to 112.1%, and the relative standard deviations (RSD) within 1.17% to 2.06%. These results suggest that the developed sensing probe could have significant potential for practical on-site test in food.

Review of Synthesis and Separation Application of Metal-Organic Framework-Based Mixed-Matrix Membranes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials assembled from organic ligands and metallic secondary building blocks. Their special structural composition gives them the advantages of high porosity, high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, and good stability. MOF membranes and MOF-based mixed-matrix membranes prepared from MOF crystals have ultra-high porosity, uniform pore size, excellent adsorption properties, high selectivity, and high throughput, which contribute to their being widely used in separation fields. This review summarizes the synthesis methods of MOF membranes, including in situ growth, secondary growth, and electrochemical methods. Mixed-matrix membranes composed of Zeolite Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF), University of Oslo (UIO), and Materials of Institute Lavoisier (MIL) frameworks are introduced. In addition, the main applications of MOF membranes in lithium-sulfur battery separators, wastewater purification, seawater desalination, and gas separation are reviewed. Finally, we review the development prospects of MOF membranes for the large-scale application of MOF membranes in factories.

Constructing functional metal-organic frameworks by ligand design for environmental applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique physical and chemical properties are composed of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, including high porosity, large specific surface area, tunable structure and functionality, which have been widely used in chemical sensing, environmental remediation, and other fields. Organic ligands have a significant impact on the performance of MOFs. Selecting appropriate types, quantities and properties of ligands can well improve the overall performance of MOFs, which is one of the critical issues in the synthesis of MOFs. This article provides a comprehensive review of ligand design strategies for functional MOFs from the number of different types of organic ligands. Single-, dual- and multi-ligand design strategies are systematically presented. The latest advances of these functional MOFs in environmental applications, including pollutant sensing, pollutant separation, and pollutant degradation are further expounded. Furthermore, an outlook section of providing some insights on the future research problems and prospects of functional MOFs is highlighted with the purpose of conquering current restrictions by exploring more innovative approaches.

Synthesis of a new magnetic metal organic framework based on nickel for extraction of carvacrol and thymol in thymus and savory samples and analyzed with gas chromatography

The present research aims at reporting a new sorbent, a magnetic nano scale metal-organic framework (MOF), based on nickel acetate and 6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine. The prepared sorbent was used to extract carvacrol and thymol using an ultrasonic-assisted dispersive micro solid phase extraction (UA-DμSPE) method. The structure of the metal organic framework was studied by applying scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The effects of various parameters such as ionic strength of sample solution, amount of sorbent (mg), volume of eluent solvent (μL), vortex and ultrasonic times (min) were optimized. Under optimal conditions, the analytes resulted in determination coefficients (R ²) of 0.9985 and 0.9967 in the concentration range 0.01-2 μg mL^-1, and in limits of detection of 0.0025 and 0.0028 μg mL^-1. Significantly, this method can be successfully applied in order to determine the target analytes in spiked real samples. Notably, the relative mean recoveries range from 94.5 to 105.7%.

Electrodeposition of Ag/ZIF-8-Modified Membrane for Water Remediation

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based membranes have been widely used in gas and liquid separation due to their porous structures and tunable compositions. Depending on the guest components, heterostructured MOFs can exhibit multiple functions. In the present work, we report a facile and rapid preparation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and silver nanoparticle incorporated ZIF-8 (Ag/ZIF-8)-based membranes on stainless-steel mesh (SSM) through a "green" electrodeposition method. The SSM was first coated with a Zn-plated layer which contains mainly zinc hydroxide nitrate (Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O) with a "leaf-like" morphology, providing anchoring points for the deposition of ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8. It takes only 10 min to prepare a uniform coating of Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O in aqueous conditions without the use of a strong base; this is by far the most efficient way of making zinc hydroxide nitrate nanocrystals. Following a similar electrodeposition approach, ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM can be prepared within 20 min by applying a small current. The encapsulation of Ag does not alter the chemical composition nor the crystal structure of ZIF-8. The resulting ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM have been tested for their effectiveness for rhodamine B dye removal in a fast vacuum filtration setting. Additionally, growth of E. coli was significantly inhibited after overnight incubation with Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM. Overall, we demonstrate a fast synthesis procedure to make ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM membranes for organic dye removal with excellent antimicrobial activity.

A dual purpose aluminum-based metal organic framework for the removal of chloramphenicol from wastewater

The presence of antibiotics in the aquatic environment can cause significant environmental and human health problems even at trace concentrations. Conventional treatment systems alone are ineffective in removing these resistant antibiotics. To address this problem, oxidation and adsorption techniques were used to explore the removal of recalcitrant antibiotic chloramphenicol (CAP). An aluminum-based metal-organic framework (Al-MIL) with high surface area and extended porosity, was prepared and used both as adsorbent and catalyst for the oxidation of CAP. Characterization of the Al-MIL revealed a large surface area of 1137 m² g^-1, a homogeneous microporous structure, good crystallinity, and particle size in the range of 200-400 nm. Adsorption of CAP on Al-MIL achieved equilibrium after 1 h, reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 96.1 mg g^-1 at the optimum pH value of 5.3. The combination of adsorption and oxidation did not improve the % TOC reduction considerably, indicating an antagonistic rather than synergistic effect between the two processes. Oxidation alone in the presence of persulfate, achieved a % TOC reduction of 71% after 2 h, compared to 56% achieved by adsorption alone at the same duration. The optimum persulfate concentration was determined as 2.5 mM. The Al-MIL structure did not demonstrate any substantial deterioriation after six repeated runs, according to the reusability experiments.

MOFs and MOF-Derived Materials for Antibacterial Application

Bacterial infections pose a serious threat to people's health. Efforts are being made to develop antibacterial agents that can inhibit bacterial growth, prevent biofilm formation, and kill bacteria. In recent years, materials based on metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant attention for various antibacterial applications due to their high specific surface area, high enzyme-like activity, and continuous release of metal ions. This paper reviews the recent progress of MOFs as antibacterial agents, focusing on preparation methods, fundamental antibacterial mechanisms, and strategies to enhance their antibacterial effects. Finally, several prospects related to MOFs for antibacterial application are proposed, aiming to provide possible research directions in this field.

A comprehensive review of capacitive deionization technology with biochar-based electrodes: Biochar-based electrode preparation, deionization mechanism and applications

The recently developed techniques for desalination and wastewater treatment are costly and unsustainable. Therefore, a cost-effective and sustainable approach is essential to achieve desalination through wastewater treatment. Capacitive deionization (CDI), an electrochemical desalination technology, has been developed as a novel water treatment technology with great potential. The electrode material is one of the key factors that promotes the development of CDI technology and broadens the scope of CDI applications. Biochar-based electrode materials have attracted increasing attention from researchers because of their advantages, such as environmentally friendly, economical, and renewable properties. This paper reviews the methods for preparing biochar-based electrode materials and elaborates on the mechanism of CDI ion storage. We then summarize the applications of CDI technology in water treatment, analyze the mechanism of pollutant removal and resource recovery, and discuss the applicability of different CDI configurations, including hybrid CDI systems. In addition, the paper notes that environmentally friendly green activators that facilitate the development of pore structure should be developed more often to avoid the adverse environmental impact. The development of ion-selective electrode materials should be enhanced and it is necessary to comprehensively assess the impact of heteroatoms on selective ion removal and CDI performance. Electrooxidation of organic pollutants should be further promoted to achieve organic degradation by extending to redox reactions.
