Synthesis of hollow structured PtNi/Pt core/shell and Pt-only nanoparticles via galvanic displacement and selective etching for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Interface engineering of three-phase nickel-cobalt sulfide/nickel phosphide/iron phosphide heterostructure for enhanced water splitting and urea electrolysis

Rational designing efficient transition metal-based multifunctional electrocatalysts is highly desirable for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water cracking. Herein, a self-supported three-phase heterostructure electrocatalyst of nickel-cobalt sulfide/nickel phosphide/iron phosphide (CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2) was prepared by a two-step gas-phase sulfurization/phosphorization strategy. The heterostructure in CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2 provides a favorable interfacial environment for electron transfer and synergistic interaction of multiphase active components, while the introduced electronegative P/S not only serves as a carrier for proton capture in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process but also promotes the metal-electron outflow, which in turn accelerates the generation of high-valent Ni3+ species to enhance the catalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). As expected, CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2 reveals excellent multifunctional electrocatalytic properties. An overpotential of 35/215 mV is required to reach 10 mA cm-2 for HER/OER. More encouragingly, a current of 100 mA cm-2 requires only 1.36 V for UOR with CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2 as anode, which is much lower as compared to the OER (1.50 V). Besides, a two-electrode water/urea electrolyzer assembled based on CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2 has a voltage of only 1.59/1.48 V when the system reaches 50 mA cm-2. This work provides a new idea for the design of energy-efficient water/urea-assisted water-splitting multifunctional catalysts with multi-component heterostructure synergistic interface engineering.

Synergistic enhancement of Zn-air battery performance via integration of Ni-doped cobalt sulfide nanoparticles within N, S-doped carbon matrix

Exploring precious metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for the practical application of rechargeable Zn-air battery (ZAB). Herein, Ni-doped Co9S8 nanoparticles embedded in a defect-rich N, S co-doped carbon matrix (d-NixCo9-xS8@NSC) are synthesized via a facile pyrolysis and acid treatment process. The introduction of abundant defects in both the carbon matrix and metal sulfide provides numerous active sites and significantly enhances the electrocatalytic performances for both the ORR and OER. d-NixCo9-xS8@NSC exhibits a superior half-wave potential of 0.841 V vs. RHE for the ORR and delivers a low overpotential of 0.329 V at 10 mA cm-2 for the OER. Additionally, Zn-air secondary battery using d-NixCo9-xS8@NSC as the air cathode displays a higher specific capacity of 734 mAh gZn-1 and a peak power density of 148.03 mW cm-2 compared to those of state-of-the-art Pt/C-RuO2 (673 mAh gZn-1 and 136.9 mW cm-2, respectively). These findings underscore the potential of d-NixCo9-xS8@NSC as a high-performance electrocatalyst for secondary ZABs, offering new perspectives on the design of efficient noble metal-free electrocatalysts for future energy storage and conversion applications.

Applications of hollow nanostructures in water treatment considering organic, inorganic, and bacterial pollutants

One of the major issues of modern society is water contamination with different organic, inorganic, and contaminants bacteria. Finding cost-effective and efficient materials and methods for water treatment and environment remediation is among the scientists' most important considerations. Hollow-structured nanomaterials, including hollow fiber membranes, hollow spheres, hollow nanoboxes, etc., have shown an exciting capability for wastewater refinement approaches, including membrane technology, adsorption, and photocatalytic procedure due to their extremely high specific surface area, high porosity, unique morphology, and low density. Diverse hollow nanostructures could potentially eliminate organic contaminants, including dyes, antibiotics, oil/water emulsions, pesticides, and other phenolic compounds, inorganic pollutants, such as heavy metal ions, salts, phosphate, bromate, and other ions, and bacteria contaminations. Here, a comprehensive overview of hollow nanostructures' fabrication and modification, water contaminant classification, and recent studies in the water treatment field using hollow-structured nanomaterials with a comparative attitude have been provided, indicating the privilege abd detriments of this class of nanomaterials. Eventually, the future outlook of employing hollow nanomaterials in water refinery systems and the upcoming challenges arising in scaling up are also propounded.

PtCu/Pt core/atomic-layer shell hollow octahedra for oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation electrocatalysis

Engineering effective bifunctional electrocatalysts that outperform the benchmark Pt/C for direct methanol proton exchange membrane fuel cells is desired and challenging. Here, we designed H-PtCu/PtL OH catalysts with a sub-nanometer Pt(111) shell layer featuring Cu- and Co-vacancies, which exhibited high activity in acidic oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reactions.

Ultrasound-assisted preparation of PdCo bimetallic nanoparticles loaded on beta zeolite for efficient catalytic hydrogen production from dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole

Research and development of high-performance catalysts is a key technology to realize hydrogen energy storage and transportation based on liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Co/beta was prepared using beta zeolite as a carrier via an electrostatic adsorption (ESA)-chemical reduction method, and it was used as the template and reducing agent to prepare bimetallic catalysts via an ultrasonic assisted galvanic replacement process (UGR). The fabricated PdCo/beta were characterized by TEM, XPS, FT-IR, XRD, H2-TPR, and H2-TPD. It was shown that the ultrafine PdCo nanoparticles (NPs) are evenly distributed on the surface of the beta zeolite. There is electron transfer between metal NPs and strong-metal-support-interaction (SMSI), which results in highly efficient catalytic dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NEC) dehydrogenation performance of PdCo bimetallic catalysts. The dehydrogenation efficiency reached 100 % in 4 h at 180 °C and 95.3 % in 6 h at 160 °C. The TOF of 146.22 min-1 is 7 times that of Pd/beta. The apparent activation energy of the reaction is 66.6 kJ/mol, which is much lower than that of Pd/beta. Under the action of ultrasonic waves, the galvanic replacement reaction is accelerated, and the intermetal and metal-carrier interactions are enhanced, which improves the catalytic reaction performance.

Oxygen Plasma Induced Nanochannels for Creating Bimetallic Hollow Nanocrystals

Platinum-based metal catalysts are considered excellent converters in various catalytic reactions, particularly in fuel cell applications. The atomic structure at the nanocrystal surface and the metal interface both influence the catalytic performance, controlling the efficiency of the electrochemical reactions. Here we report the synthesis of Ag/Pt and Ag/Pd core/shell nanocrystals and insight into the formation mechanism of these bimetallic core/shell nanocrystals when undergoing oxygen plasma treatment. We carefully designed the oxidation treatment that determines the structural and compositional evolution. The accelerated oxidation-triggered diffusion of Ag toward the outer metal shell leads to the Kirkendall effect. After prolonged oxygen plasma treatment, most core/shell nanocrystals evolve into hollow spheres. At the same time, a minor fraction of the metal remains unchanged with a well-protected Ag core and a monocrystalline Pt or Pd shell. We hypothesize that the O2 plasma disturbs the Pt or Pd shell surface and introduces active O species that react with the diffused Ag from the inside out. Based on EDX elemental mapping, combined with several electron microscopic techniques, we deduced the formation mechanism of the hollow structures to be as follows: (I) the oxidation of Ag within the Pt or Pd lattice causes a disrupted crystal lattice of Pt or Pd; (II) nanochannels arise at the defect locations on the Pt or Pd shell; (III) the remaining Ag atoms pass through these nanochannels and leave a hollow crystal behind. Our findings deepen the understanding of interface dynamics of bimetallic nanostructured catalysts under an oxidative environment and unveil an alternative approach for catalyst pretreatment.

The Effect of Pretreatment on a PtCu/C Catalyst's Structure and Functional Characteristics

This research focuses on studying the effects of various pretreatment types on a PtCu/C catalyst synthesized by the co-deposition of metal precursors. The treatment in a 1 M HNO₃ solution for 1 h is shown to result in a slight increase in activity in the oxygen electroreduction reaction (both the mass activity and specific activity calculated for the value of the electrochemically active surface area). The sample obtained after the thermal treatment, which is carried out at 350 °C under an argon atmosphere for 1 h, demonstrates 1.7 times higher specific activity than the sample before the treatment. The durability testing results obtained by the stress testing method in a potential range of 0.6-1.4 V during 2000 cycles show that the PtCu/C catalysts after both the acid treatment and the thermal treatment are characterized by higher residual activity than the sample in the "as-prepared" state.

Electrochemical Activation and Its Prolonged Effect on the Durability of Bimetallic Pt-Based Electrocatalysts for PEMFCs

The present study, concerned with high-performance ORR catalysts, may be a valuable resource for a wide range of researchers within the fields of nanomaterials, electrocatalysis, and hydrogen energy. The objects of the research are electrocatalysts based on platinum–copper nanoparticles with onion-like and solid-solution structures. To evaluate the functional characteristics of the catalysts, the XRD, XRF, TEM, HAADF-STEM, and EDX methods, as well as the voltammetry method on a rotating disk electrode have been used. This work draws the attention of researchers to the significance of applying a protocol of electrochemically activating bimetallic catalysts in terms of the study of their functional characteristics on the rotating disk electrode. The choice of the potential range during the pre-cycling stage has been shown to play a crucial role in maintaining the durability of the catalysts. The activation of the PtCu/C catalyst during cycling of up to 1.0 V allows for an increase in the durability of the catalysts with onion-like and solid-solution structures of nanoparticles by 28% and 23%, respectively, as compared with activation of up to 1.2 V.

Fabrication of Efficient Gold−Nickel-Supported Titania Nanotube Electrocatalysts for Sodium Borohydride−Hydrogen Peroxide Fuel Cells

Here we report the optimization of the fabrication conditions for AuNi bimetallic catalysts supported on self-ordered titania nanotube arrays (AuNi-TiO2ntb). A series of efficient AuNi-TiO2ntb catalysts with small amounts of Au in the range of 1.74 to 15.7 μgAu·cm−2 have been fabricated by anodization, electroless Ni plating, and galvanic displacement techniques. The electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts has been evaluated for BH4− ion oxidation in an alkaline medium using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The performance of a NaBH4-H2O2 fuel cell with Ni-TiO2ntb and AuNi-TiO2ntb anode catalysts has been investigated at different temperatures. It was found that the electrocatalytic activity of AuNi-TiO2ntbs catalysts was improved remarkably when the Ni layer of 100 and 400 nm was used for the deposition of Au crystallites. The Ni-TiO2ntb catalyst generates the maximum power density values of ca. 85–121 mW·cm−2 at a temperature of 25–55 °C, whereas the AuNi-TiO2ntb catalysts that have the Au loading of 3.07 and 15.7 μgAu·cm−2 achieve the power density values of ca. 104–147 and 119–170 mW·cm−2, respectively, at a temperature of 25–55 °C.

Architecture Evolution of Different Nanoparticles Types: Relationship between the Structure and Functional Properties of Catalysts for PEMFC

This review considers the features of the catalysts with different nanoparticle structures architecture transformation under the various pre-treatment types. Based on the results of the publications analysis, it can be concluded that the chemical or electrochemical activation of bimetallic catalysts has a significant effect on their composition, microstructure, and catalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction. The stage of electrochemical activation is recommended for use as a mandatory catalyst pre-treatment to obtain highly active de-alloyed materials. The literature is studied, which covers possible variants of the structural modification under the influence of thermal treatment under different processing conditions. Additionally, based on the literature data analysis, recommendations are given for the thermal treatment of catalysts alloyed with various d-metals.
