Abstract
Kyphosis produces abnormal posture and reduced body balance in the elderly. Elastic tape may be useful at improving kyphotic posture and body balance. This study aims to evaluate the effects of elastic taping on kyphosis and body balance in the elderly. Ten elderly participants with degenerative kyphotic posture were recruited and randomly assigned to two groups (back taped with stretched elastic tape for 15 min and back taped with non-stretched elastic tape for 15 min). After a 1-h washout period, the groups were swapped over to receive the other intervention. The outcomes measured after each taping technique were Cobb's angle measurement by inclinometer, perceived pain, and balance measurements by single leg stance test, time up and go test, center of gravity alignment (COG) and modified clinical test of sensory interaction on balance test (mCTSIB). There was a significant reduction in kyphotic angle and back pain in both the stretched and non-stretched taping groups (p < 0.05). We also found both taping techniques significantly reduced sway velocity on a foam surface with eyes closed and open (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference between taping groups for kyphotic angle, pain reduction or balance. The application of 15 min of stretched and non-stretched elastic tape in the elderly reduced kyphotic angle, back pain, and sway velocity while standing on foam surface in the mCTSIB test. If these changes persist over the long term (days and weeks) taping may be a useful intervention for elderly patients with kyphosis.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Hallux valgus is one of the most common chronic foot complaints, with prevalences of over 23% in adults and up to 35.7% in older adults. However, the prevalence is only 3.5% in adolescents. The pathological causes and pathophysiology of hallux valgus are well-known in various studies and reports. A change in the position of the sesamoid bone under the metatarsal bone of the first toe is known to be the cause of the initial pathophysiology. Purpose: The relationships between the changes in the location of the sesamoid bone and each radiologically measured angle and joint congruency in the hallux valgus remain as yet unknown. Therefore, this study investigated the relationships of sesamoid bone subluxation with the hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, and metatarsophalangeal joint congruency in hallux valgus patients. The goal is to know the hallux valgus angle, the intermetatarsal angle, and metatarsophalangeal joint congruency's correlation with hallux valgus severity and prognosis by revealing the relationship between each measured value and sesamoid bone subluxation. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 205 hallux valgus patients who underwent radiographic evaluation and subsequent hallux valgus correction surgery in our orthopedic clinic between March 2015 and February 2020. Sesamoid subluxation was assessed using a new five-grade scale on foot radiographs, and other radiologic measurements were assessed, such as hallux valgus angle, the intermetatarsal angle, distal metatarsal articular angle, joint congruency, etc. Conclusions: Measurements of the hallux valgus angle, interphalangeal angle, and joint congruency exhibited high interobserver and intraobserver reliabilities in this study. They also showed correlations with sesamoid subluxation grade.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the temporomandibular disorder (TMD) prevalence in female students and to assess its association with oral parafunctions, neck pain, and function. METHODS One hundred forty-four participants were included. The severity of TMD was assessed with Fonseca's Anamnestic Index (FAI). The oral parafunctions were self-reported with the Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC). Neck pain and neck function were recorded with the Core Outcome Measure Index (COMI). The Spearman correlation analysis was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Seventy participants (48.6%) had mild TMD. All participants had a positive OBC score, which indicated an oral parafunction. A moderate correlation between TMD and oral parafunctions (p < 0.001) was detected. DISCUSSION TMD is common in female healthcare students, and its presence is associated with oral parafunctions, neck pain, and function. It is recommended to evaluate oral health habits and neck pain and function in females with TMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hallux valgus (HV) is a foot deformity characterized by lateral deviation of the big toe and medial deviation of the first metatarsal. RESEARCH QUESTION This study aimed to shed light on the treatment effects of different interventions and surgical procedures for HV deformity to determine the effectiveness of gait biomechanics correction. METHODS English-language searches of the electronic databases were conducted in the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Gait biomechanics evaluation before and after conservative or operative treatments was essential for inclusion in this review. Methodological quality was assessed by the Institute of Health Economics (IHE) quality appraisal tool. All pooled analysis was based on the random-effects model. RESULTS Twenty-five articles (1003 participants) were identified in this review. Three studies chose conservative therapies for HV deformity, incorporating foot orthotics and minimalist running intervention, and surgeries were performed in twenty-two studies. For the pressure parameter alteration under the hallux, the effect size (ES) in the conservative treatment subgroup was - 0.95 with 95%CI [- 1.69, - 0.21]. It demonstrated a moderate ES of - 0.44% and 95%CI [- 0.81, - 0.07] in the surgery subgroup. The five operations' peak pressure alteration under the hallux demonstrated a moderate ES of - 0.45% and 95%CI [- 0.54, - 0.36]. SIGNIFICANCE Both non-operative and operative treatments could achieve the forefoot pressure redistribution, decreasing loading beneath the hallux and first metatarsal regions,However, the treatment effects of surgeries were not very robust. The percutaneous DSTR-Akin technique is recommended as an adequate operative treatment, with a large ES and moderate heterogeneity. The negative gait return effect should be noticed while using Scarf osteotomy, despite positive clinical and radiographic outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hallux valgus (HV) is a very common foot deformity involving lateral deviation of the hallux and medial deviation of the first metatarsal head. OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of HV night splinting, exercise and electrotherapy on the HV angle, and foot-specific health-related quality of life. METHODS Sixty women (120 feet) with bilateral HV deformity were randomly assigned to one of three groups - an HV night splint (SP) group, an exercise (EX) group, and a high-voltage galvanic stimulation (HVPGS) (EL) group. The patients in SP group used the HV night splints while resting or sleeping for at least 8 h a day and the patients in the EX group performed exercises 3-4 times a day with 10 repetitions for the duration of the one-month treatment period. Twenty-minute HVPGS was applied in total over three weekly sessions for four weeks in EL group. Angular degrees (hallux interphalangeal angle (HIPA), HV angle (HVA), and intermetatarsal angle (IMA)) were determined before (t0) and three months after treatment (t2). Foot-specific quality of life was assessed using the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOFQ) at t0, after one month (t1), and at t2. RESULTS All groups exhibited significant changes in the HIPA, HVA, and IMA angles and outcome measures (p ≤ 0.001). Decreases in the HIPA and IMA angles, and MOFQ-Pain subscale scores, were higher in the SP group than in the other two groups (p < 0.05). IMA angle at t2, MOFQ-Walking score at t1 and t2 and MOFQ-Pain subscale score at t1 were lower in the SP group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The SP group exhibited more positive effects in the parameters measured than the other two groups. A combination of these conservative treatment approaches may be more beneficial to improve HV symptoms with longer follow-up periods. CLINICALTRIALS. GOV IDENTIFIER NCT04393545.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hallux valgus (HV) is one of the most common deformities of the foot, and it causes great difficulties for the patients. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the effects of different rigid taping techniques on HV angle, foot motor performance, balance and walking parameters. METHODS Twenty-two voluntary individuals (12 males, 10 females) with flexible HV deformities between 18 and 35 years of age were included in the study. All measurements were done before and after placebo, athletic and Mulligan tapings were applied. After a three-day interval, new taping was applied on the same subject. HV angle was measured by goniometer. Foot motor performance (single leg heel rise test), balance (unilateral stance, limits of stability, sensory integration of balance) and temporospatial parameters of gait (step length, stride length, step width, foot angle and cadence) were evaluated. RESULTS HV angles were reduced in all taping groups (p< 0.05). The Mulligan taping method was the most effective method in reducing HV angle. Foot motor performance was not affected by any type of taping (p> 0.05). Athletic taping increased step length and step width but reduced foot angle and cadence. The Mulligan taping increased cadence and reduced foot angle (p< 0.01). Both taping methods did not affect the postural stability and fall risk (p> 0.05). Stability limits were increased in Mulligan taping group (p< 0.05). CONCLUSION It can be concluded that Mulligan taping method may be an alternative treatment method for HV rehabilitation especially as it increased the limits of stability and maintaining the balance. Mulligan method is more effective than athletic taping in terms of reducing instant HV angle.

Abstract
Falls present a tremendous challenge to health care systems. This article reviews the literature from the previous 5 years (2014-2019) in terms of methods to assess fall risk and potential steps that can be taken to reduce fall risk for patients visiting podiatric clinics. With regard to assessing fall risk, we discuss the role of a thorough medical history and podiatric assessments of foot problems and deformities that can be performed in the clinic. With regard to fall prevention we consider the role of shoe modification, exercise, pain relief, surgical interventions, and referrals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of the present study was to determine the short and medium effects of dry needling (DN) on myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) in individuals with symptomatic hallux valgus (SHV). METHODS A total of 30 female volunteers, aged 25-60, with hallux valgus (HV) were randomly divided into two groups: DN group (n = 15) and control group (n = 15) who received sham dry needling. The outcome measures were pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale, VAS), Foot Function Index (FFI), hallux valgus angle (HVA), and first metatarsophalangeal joint radiography. RESULTS At the end of the intervention, the HVA showed a significant decrease in the case group (P < 0.001); however, statistically no significant difference was found in the pain intensity and foot function between the two groups (P > 0.05). These findings were maintained for a week and a month during follow-ups. CONCLUSION According to the findings, dry needling can be recommended for improving first metatarsophalangeal joint alignment in the mild to moderate SHV individuals.

Abstract
Hallux valgus is a common condition estimated to affect as many as 23% of adults. The condition is associated with a variety of debilitating symptoms leading to significant morbidity and quality of life issues. Proper evaluation of this deformity and the timely management of its symptoms can improve hallux valgus-related symptomatology and quality of life. The most commonly used and readily reproduced measurements for assessing hallux valgus are the inter-metatarsal angle and the hallux valgus angle. These angles are helpful for choosing and planning surgical intervention for patients who fail initial conservative measures with distal osteotomies reserved for mild or moderate hallux valgus and proximal osteotomies indicated for more moderate to severe deformities. After reading this review article, readers will gain knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of hallux valgus, measurement parameters, and treatment strategies with representative case examples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many surgical procedures have been described for hallux valgus. Evidence provided by the current literature on the different procedures is, however, poor. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of HV surgery in Finland between 1997 and 2014 and to find out whether changes in operation techniques of HV have occurred during the study period. METHODS The study included all adult patients (≥18 years) who underwent primary HV operation. Patients were included into study if they had been operated with a diagnosis of HV (ICD-10 code M20.1). The data were collected by the Finnish National Hospital Discharge Register (NHDR). RESULTS The total incidence of primary HV operations was 66.7 per 100,000 person-years in 1997 and 41.4 per 100,000 person-years in 2014. The incidence of arthroplasty operations of the MTP-1 joint decreased while at the same time the incidence of the MTP-1 joint arthrodesis and TMT-1 arthrodesis increased. The gender difference (13% men, 87% women) is consistent with previous studies. CONCLUSION This study shows a significant decreasing trend of HV operations in Finland between 1997 and 2014. During the study period, the incidence of MTP I joint arthroplasty decreased, and since 2005 the incidence of MT-1-osteotomies has almost halved. At the same time, the incidence of MTP-1 joint arthrodesis increased by over 1000% and TMT-1 joint arthrodesis by nearly 2000%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Deformity of the first ray in hallux valgus patient has been deemed to mainly contribute to instability of the metatarsophalangeal joint. However, it is not clear whether the fixation of the distal osteotomy fragment and transposition of the sesamoid represent the best method for hallux valgus treatment. The aim of this study was to examine how postoperative hallux valgus osteotomy affects the stability of the first ray. METHODS To accurately investigate the biomechanical behavior of the first ray in pre-/postoperative hallux valgus patients, we described the relative displacement and stress distribution of the first metatarsal bone and sesamoid by imageology, test measurement and foot finite element model. FINDINGS Compared with the preoperative hallux valgus, the plantar pressure decreased by 47.8% and was redistributed on second metatarsal region. The peak stress and relative displacement of the distal osteotomy fragment increased by +55.7% and -59.9%, respectively. The movement of this component shifted toward the positive sagittal axis direction. In addition, the relative displacement of sesamoid decreased by 87.4% (0.18 mm) in vertical axis direction and the stress was also redistributed on medial and lateral region. Moreover, the strain of the medial main ligament was more favorable to reconstruct function of the first ray. INTERPRETATION The findings showed that the osteotomy method was helpful for stability of the first ray. This would provide the stability suggestions for postoperative hallux valgus fixation and guide further rehabilitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Taping is an effective temporary therapy for improving hallux valgus (HV) in adults. Although HV has been demonstrated to impair postural balance, there is a lack of information about how corrective taping affects balance and gait patterns in adults with HV deformity. METHODS Eighteen middle-aged female patients (average age, 53.5 years) with HV were included. Corrective tape was applied to correct HV angulation. A series of balance and gait stability tests were performed before applying tape and 1 hour after the tape was applied with a Balance Master computerized posturography device. The study involved the following tests: modified clinical test of sensory interaction and balance (mCTSIB), unilateral stance (US), limit of stability (LoS), step up/over (SUO), and walk across (WA) tests. RESULTS No significant difference was found between the no-tape and taped condition in the static balance mCTSIB and US tests ( P > .05). The taping intervention resulted in significant improvement in the dynamic balance measures for the LoS test's backward reaction time and left maximum excursion ( P < .05), a significantly higher impact index bilaterally in the SUO assessment ( P < .05), and an increase in step width mean and variability in the WA test ( P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Taping for correcting HV angulation had negative acute effects on dynamic balance in the SUO and WA tests and positive effects in the LoS test. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Corrective taping, although a form of conservative treatment for hallux valgus, has been insufficiently studied in terms of effects on balance. Our results show that taping, as an acute effect, may impair balance in middle-aged adults when walking or ascending and descending stairs.

Abstract
Synopsis Hallux valgus is a progressive deformity of the first metatarsophalangeal joint that changes the anatomy and biomechanics of the foot. To date, surgery is the only treatment to correct this deformity, though the recurrence rate is as high as 15%. This clinical commentary provides instruction in a strengthening approach for treatment of hallux valgus deformity, by addressing the moment actions of 5 muscles identified as having the ability to counter the hallux valgus process. Unlike surgery, muscle strengthening does not correct the deformity, but, instead, reduces the pain and associated gait impairments that affect the mobility of people who live with the disorder. This review is organized in 4 parts. Part 1 defines the terms of foot motion and posture. Part 2 details the anatomy and biomechanics, and describes how the foot is changed with deformity. Part 3 details the muscles targeted for strengthening; the intrinsics being the abductor hallucis, adductor hallucis, and the flexor hallucis brevis; the extrinsics being the tibialis posterior and fibularis longus. Part 4 instructs the exercise and reviews the related literature. Instructions are given for the short-foot, the toe-spread-out, and the heel-raise exercises. The routine may be performed by almost anyone at home and may be adopted into physical therapist practice, with intent to strengthen the foot muscles as an adjunct to almost any protocol of care, but especially for the treatment of hallux valgus deformity.
