Abstract
BACKGROUND Low back pain (LBP) is the leading global cause of years lived with disability. Of the biopsychosocial domains of health, social determinants of LBP remain under-researched. Socioeconomic status (SES) may be associated with the onset of new LBP or outcomes of acute LBP, with educational attainment (EA) being a key component of SES. The association between EA and LBP has yet to be the subject of a dedicated review and meta-analysis. PURPOSE To review evidence of the association between EA and a) onset or b) outcomes of acute and subacute LBP in the adult general population and to conduct statistical pooling of data where possible. METHODS An electronic search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and ProQuest from inception to 2nd November 2023 including reference lists to identify relevant prospective studies. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Quality in Prognostic Studies (QUIPS) tool. Where adequate data were available, estimates were pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis. Overall evidence for each outcome was graded using an adapted GRADE. RESULTS After screening 8498 studies, 29 were included in the review. Study confounding and attrition were common biases. Data from 19 studies were statistically pooled to explore EA as a predictor of new LBP onset or as prognostic for outcomes of acute or subacute LBP. Pooled results showed no association between EA and the onset of new LBP (OR: 0.927, 95%CI: 0.747 to 1.150; I2 = 0%). For predicting outcomes of acute LBP, compared to those with no more than secondary-level education, post-secondary education or higher was associated with better outcomes of pain (OR: 0.538, 95%CI: 0.432 to 0.671; I2 = 35%) or disability (OR: 0.565, 95%CI: 0.420 to 0.759; I2 = 44%). High heterogeneity (I2>80%) prevented meaningful pooling of estimates for subacute LBP outcomes. CONCLUSION We found no consistent evidence that lower EA increases the risk of LBP onset. Lower EA shows a consistent association with worse LBP outcomes measured at least 3 months later after acute onset with inconclusive findings in subacute LBP. Causation cannot be supported owing to study designs. High-quality research is needed on potential mechanisms to explain these effects.

Abstract
Scholars of social determinants of health have long been interested in how parent's and own education influence health. However, the differing effects of parent's and own education on health-that is, for what socioeconomic group education conveys health benefits-are relatively less studied. Using multilevel marginal structural models, we estimate the heterogeneous effects of parent's and own education over the life course on two health measures. Our analysis considers both parent's and respondent's pre-education covariates, such as childhood health and socioeconomic conditions. We find that the protective effects of college completion against negative health outcomes are remarkably similar regardless of parent's (measured by father's or mother's) education. Meanwhile, parent's education has a larger effect when the average educational level is low in the population. Our results also reveal distinct life course patterns between health measures. We conclude by discussing the implications of our study for understanding the education-health relationship.

Abstract
Current studies have indicated that the number of individuals living with pain has risen in recent years, with nearly half of all adults in some countries living with some form of pain. Such trends have prompted researchers to explore differences in pain across different sociodemographic groups, with a dominant focus on educational attainment. However, much of the studies fail to consider the confounding role of early life characteristics, such as family background. Using data on over 400,000 individuals from the UK Biobank, we look at how educational attainment is associated with nine different domains of pain (headache, facial, neck, back, hip, knee, stomach, all over, and no pain). Ultimately, we find that compared to those with no educational credentials, education is associated with anywhere between a 0.1-15% change in the likelihood of reporting pain, depending on pain type and education level, with the greatest change occurring in those with the highest level. Yet, when accounting for family background characteristics in the form of sibling fixed effects, nearly all relationships between education and pain fell by either 50% or were eliminated. We ultimately conclude that failure to consider early life characteristics, such as family background characteristics may lead to inflated estimates of pain, and that future research should delve into early life exposures and their influence on pain in adulthood.

Abstract
Objectives: This study examines whether perceived neighborhood characteristics relate to pain outcomes among middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Data were from the Health and Retirement Study (2006-2014; n = 18,814). Perceived neighborhood characteristics were physical disorder, social cohesion, safety, and social ties. We fitted adjusted generalized estimating equation models to evaluate prevalence, incidence, and recovery of moderate-to-severe limiting pain 2 years later. Results: The mean age of our sample was 65.3 years; 54.6% were female and 24.2% reported moderate-to-severe limiting pain at baseline. Positive neighborhood characteristics were associated with low prevalence (e.g., prevalence ratio [PR]: .71 for disorder) and reduced incidence (e.g., PR: .63 for disorder) of moderate-to-severe limiting pain. Positive neighborhood characteristics were associated with a high recovery rate from moderate-to-severe limiting pain (e.g., PR = 1.15 for safety), though the 95% CIs for disorder and cohesion crossed the null. Discussion: Neighborhood characteristics may be important determinants in predicting pain in later life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain is a significant global public health concern, particularly among individuals aged 45 and above. Its impact on the overall lifestyle of the individuals varies depending on the affected anatomical parts. Despite its widespread impact, there is limited awareness of the attributes of pain, making effective pain management challenging, particularly in India. This study aims to estimate the prevalence and variation in pain in different anatomical sites among middle-aged and older adults in India. METHODS A cross-sectional design was employed, utilising data from the first wave of the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI), 2017-2018. The age-sex adjusted prevalence of pain by anatomical sites (the back, joints, and ankles) was estimated using a multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS 47% of individuals aged 45 years and above reported joint pain, 31% reported back pain and 20% suffered from ankle or foot pain. The prevalence of pain at all the anatomical sites increased with age and was reported higher among females. Relative to respondents aged 45-59 years, those aged 75 years and older exhibited a 41% higher likelihood of experiencing back pain (AOR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.19-1.67), a 67% higher likelihood of joint pain (AOR: 1.67, 95% CI: 1.49-1.89), and a 32% higher likelihood of ankle/foot pain (AOR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.16-1.50). In comparison to males, females had a 56% higher likelihood of encountering back pain (AOR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.40-1.74), a 38% higher likelihood of joint pain (AOR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.27-1.50), and a 35% higher likelihood of ankle/foot pain (AOR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.17-1.57). We also found significant regional variations in pain prevalence, with higher rates in the mountainous regions of India. CONCLUSION This research highlights the high burden of pain in major anatomical sites among middle-aged and older adults in India and emphasises the need for increased awareness and effective pain management strategies.

Abstract
The antinociceptive effect of BoNT-A have been well documented in animal studies; however, results of few but well-designed randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials about BoNT-A efficacy in masticatory myofascial pain (MFP) are inconsistent. Therefore, the present randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of BoNT-A in patients with refractory MFP. Twenty-eight patients with pain reduction of less than 30% despite conservative treatment and with an average pain intensity of > 50 mm on the visual analogue scale (VAS) participated. Patients were randomly assigned to receive a total of 80 U of BoNT-A or saline solution (SS) injected into the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles. Pain intensity (VAS), quantitative sensory testing (QST), conditioned pain modulation (CPM), and psychosocial status were examined. Follow-up was performed at 1 and 6 months. For repeated-measure comparisons between evaluation times, Friedman test with Bonferroni correction was used for pain and somatosensory variables and the Wilcoxon test for the psychosocial variables. The Mann-Whitney test was used for all comparisons between groups. The BoNT-A group had a significant decrease in pain intensity at follow-ups compared with the SS group (p < 0.001). QST assessment revealed higher pressure pain threshold values in the masseter muscle for BoNT-A group compared to SS (p < 0.03) at all follow-ups. No differences were found for mechanical pain threshold and wind-up ratio values (p > 0.05) in the entire study. The BoNT-A group presented the most efficient CPM effect (p < 0.03) only at the 1 month follow-up in the masseter muscle. There was a significant time effect for BoNT-A in all psychosocial variables (p < 0.05) and a drug effect in the Central Sensitization Inventory (p < 0.01), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (p < 0.004), and Healthy Survey 36 (p < 0.05) at 6 months follow-up. The study demonstrates that a single injection-session of BoNT-A has positive effects on the hall pain spectrum of patients with refractory masticatory myofascial pain.

Abstract
The literature on Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) incidence commonly reports sociodemographic factors such as gender and age. However, the role and prevalence of other sociodemographic factors in TMD are not well defined. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to report the prevalence of sociodemographic factors in TMD patients. A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed and Web of Science databases to identify clinical trials in adult populations, using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) or the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) and reporting sociodemographic data in TMD patients. Twenty-seven studies meeting the criteria were included in this review. The most commonly reported sociodemographic factors assessed in the included studies were age, race, education, job, income, and marital status. TMD prevalence was observed to be higher among younger and divorced individuals among the included studies. However, conflicting results were found for education level, and employment was not considered a risk factor for TMD. Although this review has methodological limitations, it suggests an association between TMD incidence and certain sociodemographic factors; nevertheless, further studies are needed to establish this relationship more conclusively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of the study were to (1) describe types of pain in cancer patients, (2) examine the predictors and consequences of pain, (3) investigate the association between type of pain and survival, and (4) examine potential biological mediators of pain and survival. METHODS This was a secondary analysis of baseline data from patients diagnosed with cancer. Patients answered questionnaires that assessed sociodemographic characteristics, pain, depression, sleep, and fatigue. Blood was collected and cytokine assays were performed. Analysis of variance, Kaplan-Meier, and Cox regression survival analyses were used to test the aims. RESULTS Of the 779 patients diagnosed with cancer, the mean age was 63.5 years, 57.8% male, and 90.6% White. Of those who reported pain (total 70.3%), 46.5% stated their pain was cancer-related while 53.5% stated their pain was non-cancer-related. While both cancer and non-cancer-related pain was associated with depressive symptoms, fatigue, and sleep duration, those with cancer-related pain had significantly higher rates of depressive symptoms (F(1,516) = 21.217, p < 0.001) and fatigue (F(1,516) = 30.973, p < 0.001) but not poorer sleep (F(1,497) = 0.597, p = 0.440). After adjusting for sociodemographic, disease-related characteristics, depression, sleep duration, and morphine milligram equivalent, patient reports of cancer-related pain were significantly associated with poorer survival (HR = 0.646, 95% CI = 0.459-0.910, p = 0.012) compared to those with non-cancer-related pain, which was not associated with survival (HR = 1.022, 95% CI = 0.737-1.418, p = 0.896). Cytokines did not significantly mediate the link between pain and survival. CONCLUSION While nearly half of the pain reported was cancer-related, both types of pain resulted in greater symptom burden, but only cancer-related pain was associated with survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare pain intensity among individuals with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), other systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs), and without rheumatic disease (wAIDs). METHODS Data were collected from the COVID-19 Vaccination in Autoimmune Diseases (COVAD) study, an international cross-sectional online survey, from December 2020 to August 2021. Pain experienced in the preceding week was assessed using numeral rating scale (NRS). We performed a negative binomial regression analysis to assess pain in IIMs subtypes and whether demographics, disease activity, general health status, and physical function had an impact on pain scores. RESULTS Of 6988 participants included, 15.1% had IIMs, 27.9% had other AIRDs, and 57.0% were wAIDs. The median pain NRS in patients with IIMs, other AIRDs, and wAIDs were 2.0 (interquartile range [IQR] = 1.0-5.0), 3.0 (IQR = 1.0-6.0), and 1.0 (IQR = 0-2.0), respectively (P < 0.001). Regression analysis adjusted for gender, age, and ethnicity revealed that overlap myositis and antisynthetase syndrome had the highest pain (NRS = 4.0, 95% CI = 3.5-4.5, and NRS = 3.6, 95% CI = 3.1-4.1, respectively). An additional association between pain and poor functional status was observed in all groups. Female gender was associated with higher pain scores in almost all scenarios. Increasing age was associated with higher pain NRS scores in some scenarios of disease activity, and Asian and Hispanic ethnicities had reduced pain scores in some functional status scenarios. CONCLUSION Patients with IIMs reported higher pain levels than wAIDs, but less than patients with other AIRDs. Pain is a disabling manifestation of IIMs and is associated with a poor functional status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study computes years and proportion of life that older adults living in the United States can expect to live pain-free and in different pain states, by age, sex, and level of education. The analysis addresses challenges related to dynamics and mortality selection when studying associations between education and pain in older populations. METHODS Data are from National Health and Aging Trends Study, 2011-2020. The sample contains 10,180 respondents who are age 65 and older. Pain expectancy estimates are computed using the Interpolated Markov Chain software that applies probability transitions to multistate life tables. RESULTS Those with higher educational levels expect not only a longer life but also a higher proportion of life without pain. For example, a 65-year-old female with less than high school education expects 18.1 years in total and 5.8 years, or 32% of life, without pain compared with 23.7 years in total with 10.7 years, or 45% of life without pain if she completed college. The education gradient in pain expectancies is more salient for females than males and narrows at the oldest ages. There is no educational disparity in the percent of life with nonlimiting pain. DISCUSSION Education promotes longer life and more pain-free years, but the specific degree of improvement by education varies across demographic groups. More research is needed to explain associations between education and more and less severe and limiting aspects of pain.

Prevalence of pain and its treatment among older adults in India: a nationally representative population-based study. Pain 2023; 164:336-348. Abstract
ABSTRACT There were no estimates of the prevalence of pain and its treatment in the older population of India obtained from face-to-face interviews with a nationally representative sample. We addressed this evidence gap by using data on 63,931 individuals aged 45 years and older from the 2017/2018 Longitudinal Ageing Study in India. We identified pain from an affirmative response to the question: Are you often troubled by pain? We also identified those who reported pain that limited usual activities and who received treatment for pain. We estimated age- and sex-adjusted prevalence of pain, pain limiting usual activity and treatment, and compared these estimates across states and sociodemographic groups. We used a multivariable probit model to estimate full adjusted differences in the probability of each outcome across states and sociodemographic groups. We estimated that 36.6% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 35.3-37.8) of older adults in India were often troubled by pain and 25.2% (95% CI: 24.2-26.1) experienced pain limiting usual activity. We estimated that 73.3% (95% CI: 71.9-74.6) of those often troubled by pain and 76.4% (95% CI: 74.9-78.0) of those with pain that limited usual activity received treatment. There was large variation in each outcome across states. Fully adjusted prevalence of pain and pain limiting usual activity were higher among individuals who were female, older, less educated, rural residents, and poorer. Prevalence of treatment among those troubled by pain was lower among socially disadvantaged groups.

Abstract
Objective The present study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of pain among ageing adults in Thailand. Methods Cross-sectional and longitudinal data were analysed from two consecutive national waves of the Health, Aging, and Retirement in Thailand (HART) study in 2015 and 2017. The dependent variable pain was defined as moderate or severe pain in any of the 13 areas of the body over the past month. Independent variables included sociodemographic factors, health risk behaviour, physical and mental health conditions, and healthcare utilization. Results The baseline or cross-sectional sample consisted of 5,616 participants (≥45 years), and the follow-up or incident sample consisted of 2,305 participants. The proportion of pain in the cross-sectional/baseline sample was 36.0%, and in the incident/follow-up sample 39.9%. In the cross-sectional/baseline multivariable model, poor self-reported mental health, sleep problem, arthritis or rheumatism, brain disease and/or psychiatric problems, lung disease, use of hospital in-patient, conventional out-patient, and traditional medicine practitioners were positively associated with pain. In the incident/follow-up multivariable model, older age, Buddhist religion, class I obesity, poor self-reported mental health, hospital in-patient, private clinic out-patient, and use of a practitioner of traditional medicine were positively associated with pain. Male sex and higher education were negatively associated with both cross-sectional and incident pain. Conclusions More than one-third of older adults in Thailand had past month moderate or severe pain. Risk factors of pain from cross-sectional and/or incident analysis included older age, female sex, lower education, obesity, poor self-reported mental health, sleep problem, arthritis or rheumatism, brain disease and/or psychiatric problems, lung disease, and conventional and traditional healthcare utilization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the influence of chronic pain on functionality and its consequences on work and patient income. METHODS A total of 103 patients from the Multidisciplinary Pain Center of the Clinics Hospital of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais were interviewed between January 2020 and June 2021, applying questionnaires on mobile devices. Socioeconomic data, multidimensional characterization of pain, and instruments for assessing pain functionality and intensity were analyzed. Pain intensity was categorized as mild, moderate, or intense for comparative analysis. Ordinal logistic regression was used to identify risk factors and variables that jointly influence the outcome of pain intensity. RESULTS The patients had a median age of 55 years, were predominantly female, married or in a stable relationship, white race, and completed high school. The median family income was R$2,200. Most patients were retired due to disability and pain-related causes. Functionality analysis showed severe disability directly associated with pain intensity. The financial impacts observed were correlated with the pain intensity of the patients. Age was a risk factor for pain intensity, while sex, family income, and duration of pain served as protective factors. CONCLUSION Chronic pain was associated with severe disability, decreased productivity, and exit from the labor market, with a negative impact on financial condition. Age, sex, family income, and duration of pain were directly associated with pain intensity.

Abstract
Pain epidemiologists have, thus far, devoted scant attention to geospatial analyses of pain. Both cross-national and, especially, subnational variation in pain have been understudied, even though geographic comparisons could shed light on social factors that increase or mitigate pain. This study presents the first comparative analysis of pain in the U.S. and Canada, comparing the countries in aggregate, while also analyzing variation across states and provinces. Analyses are based on cross-sectional data collected in 2020 from U.S. and Canadian adults 18 years and older (N = 4,113). The focal pain measure is a product of pain frequency and pain interference. We use decomposition and regression analyses to link socioeconomic characteristics and pain, and inverse-distance weighting spatial interpolation to map pain levels. We find significantly and substantially higher pain in the U.S. than in Canada. The difference is partly linked to Americans' worse economic conditions. Additionally, we find significant pain variability within the U.S. and Canada. U.S. states in the Deep South, Appalachia, and parts of the West stand out as pain 'hotspots' with particularly high pain levels. Overall, our findings identify areas with a high need for pain prevention and management; they also urge further scholarship on geographic factors as important covariates in population pain. PERSPECTIVE: This study documents the high pain burden in the U.S. versus Canada, and points to states in the Deep South, Appalachia, and parts of the West as having particularly high pain burden. The findings identify geographic areas with a high need for pain prevention and management.

Abstract
Background Back pain is a common event in the general German population, but little is known about pain prevalence among occupational therapists (OT). Objective The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of pain and associated factors in German OTs. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey study. The prevalence of acute, chronic, and recurrent pain was calculated, and factors associated with chronic and recurrent pain were identified using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 444 OTs (89.41% female) with a mean age of 37.78 (SD = 11.63) years were included into the final analysis. Prevalence of acute pain was 3.83% (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 2.25%; 6.06%), of chronic pain 15.54% (95% CI: 12.30%; 19.25%), and of recurrent pain 43.02% (95% CI: 38.36%; 47.77%). The most frequently affected pain site was the lumbar spine. Significantly associated with chronic pain was the level of depression (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.05 [95% CI 1.00; 1.10]; p ≤ 0.042) of study participants. Recurrent pain was significantly associated with a standing working position, working in geriatrics, stress level, and the level of graduation in multivariate analysis. Conclusion This study estimated the prevalence of pain and identified factors associated with chronic and recurrent pain in participating OTs. To provide prevention measures and to identify more factors, further studies should be conducted.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Previous literature on race/ethnicity and pain has rarely included all major US racial groups or examined the sensitivity of findings to different pain operationalizations. Using data from the 2010 to 2018 National Health Interview Surveys on adults 18 years or older (N = 273,972), we calculated the weighted prevalence of 6 definitions of pain to provide a detailed description of chronic pain in White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and multiracial groups. We also estimated modified Poisson models to obtain relative disparities, net of demographic and socioeconomic (SES) factors including educational attainment, family income, and home ownership; finally, we calculated average predicted probabilities to show prevalence disparities in absolute terms. We found that Asian Americans showed the lowest pain prevalence across all pain definitions and model specifications. By contrast, Native American and multiracial adults had the highest pain prevalence. This excess pain was due to the lower SES among Native Americans but remained significant and unexplained among multiracial adults. The pain prevalence in White, Black, and Hispanic adults fell in between the 2 extremes. In this trio, Hispanics showed the lowest prevalence, an advantage not attributable to immigrant status or SES. Although most previous research focuses on Black-White comparisons, these 2 groups differ relatively little. Blacks report lower prevalence of less severe pain definitions than Whites but slightly higher prevalence of severe pain. Net of SES, however, Blacks experienced significantly lower pain across all definitions. Overall, racial disparities are larger than previously recognized once all major racial groups are included, and these disparities are largely consistent across different operationalizations of pain.

OBJECTIVES Pain, distress, and depression are predictors of posttrauma pain and recovery. We hypothesized that pretrauma characteristics of the person could predict posttrauma severity and recovery. METHODS Sex, age, body mass index, income, education level, employment status, pre-existing chronic pain or psychopathology, and recent life stressors were collected from adults with acute musculoskeletal trauma through self-report. In study 1 (cross-sectional, n=128), pain severity was captured using the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), distress through the Traumatic Injuries Distress Scale (TIDS) and depression through the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). In study 2 (longitudinal, n=112) recovery was predicted using scores on the Satisfaction and Recovery Index (SRI) and differences within and between classes were compared with identify pre-existing predictors of posttrauma recovery. RESULTS Through bivariate, linear and nonlinear, and regression analyses, 8.4% (BPI) to 42.9% (PHQ-9) of variance in acute-stage predictors of chronicity was explainable through variables knowable before injury. In study 2 (longitudinal), latent growth curve analysis identified 3 meaningful SRI trajectories over 12 months. Trajectory 1 (start satisfied, stay satisfied [51%]) was identifiable by lower TIDS, BPI, and PHQ-9 scores, higher household income and less likely psychiatric comorbidity. The other 2 trajectories (start dissatisfied, stay dissatisfied [29%] versus start dissatisfied, become satisfied [20%]) were similar across most variables at baseline save for the "become satisfied" group being mean 10 years older and entering the study with a worse (lower) SRI score. DISCUSSION The results indicate that 3 commonly reported predictors of chronic musculoskeletal pain (BPI, TIDS, PHQ-9) could be predicted by variables not related to the injurious event itself. The 3-trajectory recovery model mirrors other prior research in the field, though 2 trajectories look very similar at baseline despite very different 12-month outcomes. Researchers are encouraged to design studies that integrate, rather than exclude, the pre-existing variables described here.

Abstract
Purpose As an adipocyte-secreted hormone, resistin is linked to inflammation, insulin resistance and atherosclerosis. Currently, resistin is proposed as a novel biomarker for postoperative pain intensity. However, due to the various types of surgery and limited numbers of studies, previous conclusions should be validated. This study aimed to explore the effect of resistin polymorphism (rs3745367) on pain thresholds and sufentanil consumption in gastric cancer patients. Patients and Methods A total of 148 gastric cancer patients enrolled in this study had their pain thresholds measured before surgery. After the exclusion of 16 patients, the characteristics of demography and clinic, numerical rating scale (NRS) and sufentanil consumption of 132 patients were recorded. Rs3745367 of resistin was identified by Sanger sequencing. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed for sufentanil consumption and mechanical pain threshold. Results The distributions of the GG, AG, and AA genotypes of rs3745367 among the participants were 54 (40.9%), 65 (49.2%), and 13 (9.9%), respectively. The mechanical pain threshold (P=0.04) and postoperative sufentanil consumption in the 1st 24 h (P=0.03) were significantly different among GG, AG, and AA genotype carriers. There was no significant difference among the three genotypes for the heat pain threshold and cold pain threshold. Regarding the NRS, no statistically significant difference among the three different genotypes was found 24 h postoperatively. Conclusion Rs3745367 of resistin is associated with the mechanical pain threshold and postoperative sufentanil consumption in gastric cancer patients. Patients with the AA genotype of rs3745367 present an increased mechanical pain threshold and decreased postoperative sufentanil consumption.

Abstract
Although physical pain lies at the intersection of biology and social conditions, a sociology of pain is still in its infancy. We seek to show how physical and psychological pain are jointly parts of a common expression of despair, particularly in relation to mortality. Using the 2002-2014 National Health Interview Survey Linked Mortality Files (N = 228,098), we explore sociodemographic differences in the intersection of physical and psychological pain (referred to as the "pain-distress nexus") and its relationship to mortality among adults ages 25 to 64. Results from regression and event history models reveal that differences are large for the combination of the two, pointing to an overlooked aspect of health disparities. The combination of both high distress and high pain is most prevalent and most strongly predictive of mortality among socioeconomically disadvantaged, non-Hispanic whites. These patterns have several implications that medical sociology is well positioned to address.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the prevalence of chronic pain and its risk factors in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS A total of 145 patients diagnosed with OSA were consecutively recruited from the Sleep Medicine Center in West China Hospital. All patients were divided into two groups including OSA with and without chronic pain. They were assessed the subjective sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Insomnia Severity Index), objective sleep (polysomnography), mood symptoms (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale), and pain characteristics (Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire). Demographic, clinical, subjective and objective sleep parameters were compared between OSA patients with and without chronic pain. Binary logistic regression models and linear regression models were used to examine the risk factors of chronic pain in OSA. RESULTS Fifty-five (37.9%) patients with OSA were diagnosed with chronic pain. There were more severe subjective sleep disruption and symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients with chronic pain compared to those without chronic pain. After controlling for potential confounders, poor subjective sleep quality and severe insomnia and mood disorders (all ps < 0.05), but not objective sleep fragmentation or nocturnal hypoxemia (all ps > 0.05) were associated with the increased risk of pain and pain intensity, respectively. CONCLUSION More than one-third of patients with OSA had chronic pain. Subjective sleep disruption and mood disorders are the risk factors of chronic pain in OSA. Our findings suggest that subjective sleep quality should be valued highly in the relationship between OSA and pain.

Abstract
This study builds on a growing body of literature analyzing the education-health gradient across detailed educational categories, which documents that US working-age adults who attended college but did not earn a bachelor's degree report equal or worse health than adults with a high school diploma. This is known as the "anomaly" in the education-health gradient. The purpose of this study is to test whether this pattern extends to measures of serious psychological distress (SPD) and individual symptoms by using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS, 1997-2018) and a series of logistic regression models. We find that the anomaly in the education-health gradient is present for a summary measure of SPD as well as for five of the six symptoms that make up this measure. The exception was reporting feeling sad most or all the time during the last month, where adults with "some college" were found to have lower odds than those with a high school diploma. Further stratified analysis by sex revealed that this result for feeling sad was driven by women. In terms of associate degrees, our models show that adults with a vocational/technical associate degree have statically similar odds of SPD and reporting four out of six symptoms (exceptions were feeling hopeless and sadness), while those with an academic associate degree have significantly lower odds in all outcomes. The robustness of the models used is supported by an extensive sensitivity analysis. Overall, we find evidence of the anomaly in the education-health gradient in SPD and individual symptoms of psychological distress at the sub-baccalaureate level, adding to previous studies that document the anomaly in markers of physiological dysregulation, health conditions, vision problems, functional limitations, and pain.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Pain is a major health problem among U.S. young adults. The passage of the Affordable Care Act's young adult mandate in 2010 allowed individuals to remain on their parents' health insurance until age 26. Although studies have documented the positive effects of this mandate on various health outcomes, less is known about its association with self-reported pain among young adults. Using the 2002 to 2018 National Health Interview Survey (N = 48,053) and a difference-in-differences approach, we compared the probabilities of reporting pain at 5 sites (low back, joint, neck, headache/migraine, and facial/jaw) and the number of pain sites between mandate eligible (ages 20-25) and ineligible (ages 26-30) adults before and after the mandate. In fully adjusted models, the mandate was associated with a decline of 2 percentage points in the probability of reporting pain at any site (marginal effect, -0.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.05 to -0.002; weighted sample proportion, 0.37) and in the number of pain sites (coefficient, -0.07; 95% CI, -0.11 to -0.01; weighted sample average, 0.62). These results were primarily driven by the association between the mandate and the probability of reporting low back pain (marginal effect, -0.03; 95% CI, -0.05 to -0.01; weighted sample proportion, 0.20). Additional analyses revealed that the mandate was associated with improvements in access to care and reductions in risk factors for pain-including chronic conditions and risky health behaviors. To the extent that the results are generalizable to other health insurance programs, removing financial barriers to medical care may help reduce pain prevalence.

Abstract
Chronic pain is a common, costly, and consequential health problem. However, despite some important analytic contributions, sociological research on pain has not yet coalesced into a unified subfield. We present three interrelated bodies of evidence and illustrative new empirical findings using 2010 to 2018 National Health Interview Survey data to argue that pain should have a central role in sociological investigations of health. Specifically, we contend that (1) pain is a sensitive barometer of population health and well-being, (2) pain is emblematic of many contested and/or chronic conditions, and (3) pain and pain treatment reflect and have wide-ranging implications for public policy. Overall, whether pain is analyzed quantitatively or qualitatively-focusing on its distribution in the population, its social causes and consequences, or its subjective meanings for individuals-pain reflects social conditions, sociopolitical context, and health-related beliefs of a society. Pain is thus an important frontier for future sociological research.

Abstract
Determining long-term trends in chronic pain prevalence is critical for evaluating and shaping U.S. health policies, but little research has examined such trends. This study (1) provides estimates of pain trends among U.S. adults across major population groups; (2) tests whether sociodemographic disparities in pain have widened or narrowed over time; and (3) examines socioeconomic, behavioral, psychological, and medical correlates of pain trends. Regression and decomposition analyses of joint, low back, neck, facial/jaw pain, and headache/migraine using the 2002-2018 National Health Interview Survey for adults aged 25-84 (N = 441,707) assess the trends and their correlates. We find extensive escalation of pain prevalence in all population subgroups: overall, reports of pain in at least one site increased by 10%, representing an additional 10.5 million adults experiencing pain. Socioeconomic disparities in pain are widening over time, and psychological distress and health behaviors are among the salient correlates of the trends. This study thus comprehensively documents rising pain prevalence among Americans across the adult life span and highlights socioeconomic, behavioral, and psychological factors as important correlates of the trends. Chronic pain is an important dimension of population health, and demographic research should include it when studying health and health disparities.
