Abstract
Warfarin (WA), the most prescribed oral anticoagulant in patients with atrial fibrillation, is widely utilized for the treatment of various diseases, such as vascular disorders, venous thrombosis, and atrial fibrillation. However, its abnormal concentration is linked to a variety of disorders and diseases, namely bleeding while brushing teeth, skin tissue issues, hair loss, and chest pain. Therefore, WA monitoring in blood serum is vital due to its narrow therapeutic window. Accordingly, WA determination has been conducted using various methods, such as high-performance liquid chromatography, fluorescent, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and electrochemical methods. Electrochemical methods have received considerable attention due to their outstanding selectivity, remarkable sensitivity, great time efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Herein, a comprehensive literature survey on electrochemical methods for determining WA is presented. This review discusses the development of various chemically modified electrodes (CMEs). These CMEs, such as multi-wall carbon nanotubes, molecularly imprinted polymers, metal oxide nanoparticles, and polymer nanocomposites, owing to their morphology and structure, high selectivity, high conductivity, and high volume/area ratio, are designed to overcome the limitations of bare electrodes, which include reduced electrocatalytic activity, slower electron transfer rates, and poor sensitivity. Also, this review presents the advantages and disadvantages of various modified electrodes applied in WA detection.

Abstract
Detecting warfarin levels in the blood is of critical importance in anticoagulant therapy because it is imperative that the concentration of the drug is maintained within a specific range. In this paper, we present a proof-of-concept of a novel sensing device based on ion-selective electrode (ISE) technology for the direct detection of warfarin in blood samples without any sample pretreatment. We used tetradodecylammonium chloride (TDDA) as an ion-exchanger to fabricate an ion-selective membrane. The ISE we developed showed high sensitivity, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.25 × 10−7 M and 1.4 × 10−5 M for detecting warfarin in buffer and blood, respectively. The sensor also exhibited promising selectivity in identifying the presence of various ions including chloride and salicylate, the most abundant ions in blood with a calibration slope of 58.8 mV/dec. We envision combining the ISE with a microfluidic system and a simple potentiometer to produce a sensitive, selective, and portable point-of-care testing device for monitoring the level of warfarin in patients’ blood during treatment.

Quantification and Classification of Diclofenac Sodium Content in Dispersed Commercially Available Tablets by Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared Spectroscopy and Multivariate Data Analysis. PHARMACEUTICALS (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2021; 14:ph14050440. Abstract
A new methodology, based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy equipped with an attenuated total reflectance accessory (ATR FT-IR), was developed for the determination of diclofenac sodium (DS) in dispersed commercially available tablets using chemometric tools such as partial least squares (PLS) coupled with discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The results of PLS-DA depicted a perfect classification of the tablets into three different groups based on their DS concentrations, while the developed model with PLS had a sufficiently low root mean square error (RMSE) for the prediction of the samples’ concentration (~5%) and therefore can be practically used for any tablet with an unknown concentration of DS. Comparison with ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) spectrophotometry as the reference method revealed no significant difference between the two methods. The proposed methodology exhibited satisfactory results in terms of both accuracy and precision while being rapid, simple and of low cost.

Abstract
An optoelectronic flow-through detector for active ingredients determination in pharmaceutical formulations is explained. Two consecutive compact photodetector's devices operating according to light-emitting diodes-solar cells concept where the LEDs acting as a light source and solar cells for measuring the attenuated light of the incident light at 180˚ have been developed. The turbidimetric detector, fabricated of ten light-emitting diodes and five solar cells only, integrated with a glass flow cell has been easily adapted in flow injection analysis manifold system. For active ingredients determination, the developed detector was successfully utilized for the development and validation of an analytical method for warfarin determination in pure and pharmaceutical preparations. The developed method is based on the forming of a white, turbid product as a result of a reaction between the warfarin and semicarbazide which was used as an oxidizing agent. The developed flow-through detector system is semi mechanized, economic in materials consumption, easy to operate and characterized by excellent analytical results. Both developed analytical devices used in two channels flow injection system allow for turbidimetric measurements of warfarin in 0.9-154 μg ml-1 and 123-1600 μg ml-1 ranges of concentration, with limits of detections 0.73 μg ml-1 and 24.66 μg ml-1 for photodetectors 1& 2 respectively. The turbidity measurement procedure for the current flow system offers to conduct 60 tests per hour of the warfarin which is the most needs of quality control analysis in industrial applications. To ensure the analytical usefulness of the flow system, the warfarin has been analyzed in the real samples with a fully acceptable agreement and a correlation between the results offered by the developed flow system and the official method.

Abstract
This paper presents the results of the research on the influence of catalytic activity of iron(II) octacarboxyphthalocyanines (FePcOC) on the transformation of diclofenac (DCF) which is the most popular anti-inflammatory analgesic. Diclofenac poses a serious threat to the natural environment. The paper demonstrates that diclofenac, in the presence a monomeric form of iron octacarboxyphthalocyanine and hydroxyl radicals (HO•) (from H2O2), undergoes a transformation into diclofenac-2,5-iminoquinone (DCF-2,5-IQ), causing distinct changes in the UV-Vis absorption spectrum. In the presence of iron octacarboxyphthalocyanine and H2O2, the previously colourless diclofenac solution becomes intense orange. As a result, a new band at approx. 450 nm appears in the absorption spectrum. HPLC analysis has shown that the concentration of diclofenac decreases with time. TD-DFT calculations using the CAM-B3LYP/6-31+G (d, p) method have been conducted to confirm experimental data concerning the formation of a new band at λmax = 450 nm.

Abstract
Background:
Diclofenac is a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Recent
studies have shown that frequent consumption of this drug in high concentrations can cause heart diseases,
so strict control of diclofenac’s quantity in commercial drugs is necessary. This paper presents
the development of an optimized voltammetric methodology for the quantification of diclofenac,
which offers some advantages over other electrochemical and accepted methods.
Objective:
Optimize with a Box-Behnken design the differential pulse voltammetry parameters towards
the quantification of diclofenac in pharmaceutical samples.
Methods:
Diclofenac behavior in the working electrode was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, in order
to stablish the best conditions for diclofenac’s quantification. A Box-Behnken design was then used to
optimize the differential pulse voltammetry parameters and stablish the analytical behavior of the proposed
methodology. Commercial tablets were prepared for analysis according to the Pharmacopeia,
the DPV optimized methodology was used to quantify diclofenac in the samples, and the results were
statistically compared with those obtained with the official methodology.
Results:
After optimization, the analytical parameters found were: correlation coefficient of 0.998, detection
limit of 0.001 µM, quantification limit of 0.0033 µM and sensitivity of 0.299 µA.µM-1. The
statistical analysis showed there were no significant differences between the results obtained with the
proposed methodology and those obtained with the official methodology.
Conclusion:
The statistical analysis showed that the proposed methodology is as reliable as the official
spectrophotometric one for the quantification of diclofenac in commercial drugs, with very competitive
analytical parameters, and even better to others found with more complex electrodes.

Abstract
A diclofenac (DCF)-imprinted polymer, composed of polyaniline, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and triphenylamine, as cross linker, was synthetized. This composite was identified by using SEM and FT-IR techniques. The prepared DCF-imprinted polymer (MIP) was used for modification of carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) to fabricate a selective DCF electrochemical sensor. Electrochemical behavior of DCF on the investigated sensor and the optimization of the parameters affecting the DCF determination were screened by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The cyclic voltammogram of DCF showed an anodic peak current at about 0.5 V (vs. SCE). The calibration curve for DCF determination was obtained by applying the investigated sensor as working electrode in differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). A linear increase in the anodic peak current was observed in the range 5-80 mg L-1 of DCF. The corresponding limit of detection was calculated to be 1.1 mg L-1. The relative standard deviations of the inter- and intra-day analysis of DCF presented by the method were found to be as 2.43% and 2.47%, respectively. The selectivity of the investigated sensor was evaluated by its use for determination of DCF in the binary solutions containing DCF/glucose, DCF/urea and DCF/ascorbic acid. It was shown that the fabricated electrode can be successfully used for analysis of DCF in pharmaceutical and urine samples.

Abstract
New methods for water treatment are required as a result from an increasing awareness in the reduction of the pollution impact in the environment. In the perspective of the photo-oxidation of organic pollutants present in water, the principal incentive for the preparation of heterogeneous photocatalysts is their easy recovery from the reaction mixture, which allows their reuse in successive runs, minimizing the loss of their original photocatalytic properties. Different types of supports can be used in the immobilization of photoactive species, such as porphyrins (Pors) and phthalocyanines (Pcs). This mini-review will consider the different methodologies for the immobilization of Pors and Pcs and their photocatalytic performance in the photodegradation of organic pollutants in water, addressing also their recycling ability in successive water treatments.

Abstract
<p>This article describes a differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) method for the determination of diclofenac in pharmaceutical preparations and human serum. The proposed method was based on electro-oxidation of diclofenac at platinum electrode in 0.1 M TBAClO4/acetonitrile solution. The well-defined two oxidation peaks were observed at 0.87 and 1.27 V, respectively. Calibration curves that obtained by using current values measured for second peak were linear over the concentration range of 1.5-17.5 μg mL-1and 2-20 μg mL-1 in supporting electrolyte and serum, respectively. Precision and accuracy were also checked in all media. Intra- and inter-day precision values for diclofenac were less than 3.87, and accuracy (relative error) was better than 4.12%. The method developed in this study is accurate, precise and can be easily applied to Diclomec, Dicloflam and Voltaren tablets as pharmaceutical preparation. In addition, the proposed technique was successfully applied to spiked human serum samples. No electro-active interferences from the endogenous substances were found in human serum.</p>

Abstract
Four simple, specific, accurate and precise spectrophotometric methods are developed and validated for simultaneous determination of cinnarizine (CIN) and dimenhydrinate (DIM) in a binary mixture with overlapping spectra, without preliminary separation. The first method is dual wavelength spectrophotometry (DW), the second is a ratio difference spectrophotometric one (RD) which measures the difference in amplitudes between 250 and 270 nm of ratio spectrum, the third one is novel constant center spectrophotometric method (CC) and the fourth method is mean centering of ratio spectra (MCR). The calibration curve is linear over the concentration range of 4-20 and 10-45 μg/ml for CIN and DIM, respectively. These methods are tested by analyzing synthetic mixtures of the above drugs and they are applied to commercial pharmaceutical preparation of the subjected drugs. The validity of results was assessed by applying standard addition technique. The results obtained were found to agree statistically with those obtained by a reported method, showing no significant difference with respect to accuracy and precision.

The linearity was established over the concentration range of 5–35 μg/mL for LSV and 0.25–5 μg/mL for GC–MS method. The intra- and inter-day relative standard deviation (RSD) was less than 4.39% and 4.62% for LSV and GC–MS, respectively. Limits of quantification (LOQ) were determined as 4.8 and 0.15 μg/mL for LSV and GC–MS, respectively. No interference was found from tablet excipients at the selected assay conditions. The methods were applied for the quality control of commercial diclofenac dosage forms to quantify the drug and to check the formulation content uniformity.

Abstract
Poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) is the most common polymer matrix used in the fabrication of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). However, the surfaces of PVC-based sensors have been reported to show membrane instability. In an attempt to overcome this limitation, here we developed two alternative methods for the preparation of highly stable and robust ion-selective sensors. These platforms are based on the selective electropolymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), where the sulfur atoms contained in the polymer covalently interact with the gold electrode, also permitting controlled selective attachment on a miniaturized electrode in an array format. This platform sensor was improved with the crosslinking of the membrane compounds with poly(ethyleneglycol) diglycidyl ether (PEG), thus also increasing the biocompatibility of the sensor. The resulting ISE membranes showed faster signal stabilization of the sensor response compared with that of the PVC matrix and also better reproducibility and stability, thus making these platforms highly suitable candidates for the manufacture of robust implantable sensors.

Abstract
A simple high-performance liquid chromatographic method for simultaneous determination of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), sorbic acid, and diclofenac sodium was developed and validated. Separation was achieved on a C(18) column (10 cm×4.6 mm) using gradient elution. The mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile-ammonium dihydrogen phosphate buffer solution (0.01 M, pH=2.5, containing 0.8% tetra-n-butyl ammonium hydroxide). The detector wavelength was set at 254 nm. Under these conditions, separation of three compounds was achieved in less than 10 min. The effect of two metal salts and metal concentration on peak area of EDTA was investigated. The pH effect on retention of EDTA and sorbic acid was studied. The method showed linearity for EDTA, sorbic acid, and diclofenac in the ranges of 2.5-100.0, 5.0-200.0, and 20.0-120.0 μg/mL, respectively. The within- and between-day relative standard deviations ranged from 0.52 to 1.94%, 0.50 to 1.34%, and 0.78 to 1.67% for EDTA, sorbic acid, and diclofenac, respectively. The recovery of EDTA, sorbic acid, and diclofenac from pharmaceutical preparation ranged from 96.0-102.0%, 99.7-101.5%, to 97.0-102.5%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about simultaneous determination of EDTA, sorbic acid, and diclofenac.

Abstract
Porphyrazines possessing non-coordinating alkyl (propyl) and aralkyl (4-tert-butylphenyl) groups in the periphery were studied as optical sensors for a set of mono-, di- and trivalent cations. Investigated porphyrazines in the UV-Vis monitored titrations revealed significant responses towards aluminium and gallium cations, unlike other metal ions studied. Additionally, porphyrazine possessing 4-tert-butylphenyl peripheral substituents showed sensor property towards ruthenium cation and was chosen for further investigation. The presence of isosbestic points in absorption spectra for its titration with aluminium, gallium and ruthenium cations, accompanied by a linear Benesi-Hildebrand plot, proved complex formation. The continuous variation method was used to determine binding stoichiometry in 1:1 porphyrazine-metal ratio. X-Ray studies and density functional theory calculations were employed to investigate octa(4-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrazine structure. The results helped to explain the observed selectivity towards certain ions. Interaction between ion and porphyrazine meso nitrogen in a Lewis acid-Lewis base manner is proposed.

Abstract
Two manganese(III) porphyrins: manganese(III) tetraphenylporphyrin chloride and manganese(III)-tetrakis(3-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin chloride were tested as ionophores for the construction of new diclofenac-selective electrodes. The electroactive material was incorporated either in PVC or a sol-gel matrix. The effect of different plasticizers and additives (anionic and cationic) on the potentiometric response was studied. The best results were obtained for the PVC membrane plasticized with dioctylphtalate and having sodium tetraphenylborate as a lipophilic anionic additive incorporated. The sensor response was linear in the concentration range 3 × 10(-6) - 1 × 10(-2) M with a slope of -59.7 mV/dec diclofenac, a detection limit of 1.5 × 10(-6) M and very good selectivity coefficients. It was used for the determination of diclofenac in pharmaceutical preparations, by direct potentiometry. The results were compared with those obtained by the HPLC reference method and a good agreement was found between the two methods.

Abstract
A new detection technique called Fast Fourier Transform Square-Wave Voltammetry (FFT SWV) is based on measurements of electrode admittance as a function of potential. The response of the detector (microelectrode), which is generated by a redox processes, is fast, which makes the method suitable for most applications involving flowing electrolytes. The carbon paste electrode was modified by nanostructures to improve sensitivity. Synthesized dysprosium nanowires provide a more effective nanotube-like surface [1-4] so they are good candidates for use as a modifier for electrochemical reactions. The redox properties of diclofenac were used for its determination in human serum and urine samples. The support electrolyte that provided a more defined and intense peak current for diclofenac determination was a 0.05 mol L(-1) acetate buffer pH = 4.0. The drug presented an irreversible oxidation peak at 850 mV vs. Ag/AgCl on a modified nanowire carbon paste electrode which produced high current and reduced the oxidation potential by about 100 mV. Furthermore, the signal-to-noise ratio was significantly increased by application of a discrete Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method, background subtraction and two-dimensional integration of the electrode response over a selected potential range and time window. To obtain the much sensivity the effective parameters such as frequency, amplitude and pH was optimized. As a result, C(DL) of 2.0 × 10(-9) M and an LOQ of 5.0 × 10(-9) M were found for the determination for diclofenac. A good recovery was obtained for assay spiked urine samples and a good quantification of diclofenac was achieved in a commercial formulation.

Abstract
The construction and electrochemical response characteristics of a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane selective electrode for the determination of sulpiride (SPD) are described. The sensing membrane comprised an ion-exchanger formed between the protonated drug and tetraphenylborate (TPB(-)) in a plasticized PVC matrix. The influence of membrane composition on the electrode response was studied. The electrode showed a fast, stable and Nernstian response over a sulpiride concentration range (1 × 10(-4) - 1 × 10(-2) M) with a mean slope of 58.4 ± 0.9 mV dec(-1) of concentration, a mean detection limit of 4.2 × 10(-5) ± 1.2 × 10(-5) M, a wide working pH range (2 - 8) and a fast response time (< 15 s). The electrode showed good selectivity towards sulpiride with respect to some inorganic and organic compounds. When the electrode was applied to the determination of sulpiride in pharmaceuticals and human urine, a high percentage of recovery was attained with no need for sample pretreatment procedures because of the lack of interfering matrix effects.

Abstract
A trazodone-selective electrode for application in pharmaceutical quality control and urine analysis was developed. The electrode is based on incorporation of a trazodone-tetraphenylborate ion exchanger in a poly(vinyl chloride) membrane. The electrode showed a fast, stable and Nernstian response over a wide trazodone concentration range (5 x 10(-5)-1 x 10(-2) M) with a mean slope of 59.3 +/- 0.9 mV/dec of concentration, a mean detection limit of 1.8 x 10(-5) +/- 2.2 x 10(-6) M, a wide working pH range (5-7.5) and a fast response time (less than 20 s). The electrode also showed good accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility and selectivity with respect to some inorganic and organic compounds, including the main trazodone metabolite. The electrode provided good analytical results in the determination of trazodone in pharmaceuticals and spiked urine samples; no extraction steps were necessary. Dissolution testing of trazodone tablets, in different conditions of pH and particle size, based on a direct potentiometric determination with the new selective electrode is presented as well.

Abstract
The FT-Raman quantification of diclofenac sodium in tablets and capsules was performed with the help of the partial least squares (PLS), principal component regression (PCR) and counter-propagation artificial neural networks (CP-ANN) methods. For the analysed tablets, calibration models were built using unnormalised spectra and spectra normalised by the intensity of a selected band of an internal standard. Different pre-processing methods were applied for the capsules. To compare the predictive ability of the models, the relative standard errors of prediction (RSEP) were calculated. The 5 x 5 CP-ANN and PLS methods gave models of comparable quality, which were usually more efficient than the PCR ones. The RSEP error values for the tablets were in the range of 2.4-3.8% for the calibration and 2.6-3.5% for the validation data sets and for the three procedures applied. For capsules, the RSEP errors were in the range of 0.8-1.9% and 1.4-1.7% for the calibration and validation samples, respectively. Five commercial products containing 25, 50 or 75 mg of diclofenac sodium per tablet/capsule were quantified. Concentrations found from the Raman data analysis agree with the results of the reference analysis and correlate strongly with the declared values with the recovery of 99.5-101.3%, 99.7-102.0% and 99.9-101.2% for the PLS, PCR and CP-ANN methods, respectively. The proposed procedure can be a fast and convenient alternative to the standard pharmacopoeial methods of diclofenac sodium quantification in solid dosage forms.

Abstract
AbstractThe potentiometric response characteristics of a diclofenac selective electrode, based on ion association in different plasticizers, were compared. The sensitivity, working range, detection limit and selectivity of membrane sensors demonstrated significant dependence on the type of plasticizers. The potentiometric unit presented a linear response toward diclofenac concentrations between 1 × 10−5 − 5 × 10−2 mol L−1, with slopes of approximately 60 mV dec−1, and exhibited a response time of 3 s. The potentiometric analysis of sodium diclofenac in pharmaceutical formulations was perfomed by the membrane electrode proposed and compared with the results of potentiometric titration given by the Pharmacopoeia of Ukraine.

Abstract
Lanthanum hydroxide nanowires modified carbon paste electrode (LNW/CPE) exhibiting an electrocatalytic response toward the oxidation of mefenamic acid (MFA) is described. The catalytic action of the LNW/CPE on the oxidation of MFA via one-electron and one-proton transfer is attributed to the formation of the porous construction and the increase of efficient surface of the electrode due to the adulteration of LNW with carbon powders. Using the LNW/CPE, a linear sweep voltammetric method for the determination of MFA and other drugs with diphenylamine parent is proposed. A linear range of 2.0 x 10(-11) to 4.0 x 10(-9)mol L(-1) is obtained along with a detection limit of 6.0 x 10(-12)mol L(-1).
