Abstract
Riverine fish in densely populated areas is constantly exposed to wastewater-borne contaminants from effluent discharges. These can enter the organism through the skin, gills or by ingestion. Whereas most studies assessing the contaminant burden in exposed fish have focused either on muscle or a limited set of tissues. Here we set out to generate a more comprehensive overview of the distribution of pollutants across tissues by analyzing a panel of matrices including liver, kidney, skin, brain, muscle, heart, plasma and bile. To achieve a broad analyte coverage with a minimal bias towards a specific contaminant class, sample extracts from four fish species were analyzed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) - high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for the presence of 600 wastewater-borne pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) with known environmental relevance in river water through a suspect-screening analysis. A total of 30 compounds were detected by suspect screening in at least one of the analyzed tissues with a clear prevalence of antidepressants. Of these, 15 were detected at confidence level 2.a (Schymanski scale), and 15 were detected at confidence level 1 following confirmation with authentic standards, which furthermore enabled their quantification. The detected PhACs confirmed with level 1 of confidence included acridone, acetaminophen, caffeine, clarithromycin, codeine, diazepam, diltiazem, fluoxetine, ketoprofen, loratadine, metoprolol, sertraline, sotalol, trimethoprim, and venlafaxine. Among these substances, sertraline stood out as it displayed the highest detection frequency. The values of tissue partition coefficients for sertraline in the liver, kidney, brain and muscle were correlated with its physicochemical properties. Based on inter-matrix comparison of detection frequencies, liver, kidney, skin and heart should be included in the biomonitoring studies of PhACs in riverine fish.

Abstract
The novel dual-emission carbon dots (DECDs) for highly selective and sensitive recognition of chlortetracycline (CTC) and cell imaging were synthesized successfully by one-step synthesis. The obtained DECDs possessed two fluorescence peaks (345 nm and 450 nm) and showed specific response to CTC, resulting in a decrease in fluorescence intensity at 345 nm, a blue shift, and an increase in fluorescence intensity at 450 nm. The obtained DECDs exhibited highly selective response to CTC and not to its analogues, such as tetracycline, doxycycline, and oxytetracycline. Thus, an excellent ratiometric probe for the detection of CTC was fabricated successfully and used for the detection of CTC in real samples with the detection limit (LOD) of 16.45 nM. More importantly, the DECDs were used for quantitative detection of CTC in living cells, which demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and broad prospects in biomedicine application. Finally, the excellent selectivity of DECDs toward CTC was attributed to the FRET mechanism and the formation of complexes.

Abstract
In the last decades an increasing number of studies has been published concerning contamination of aquatic ecosystems with pharmaceuticals. Yet, the distribution of these chemical compounds in aquatic environments raises many questions and uncertainties. Data on the presence of selected pharmaceuticals in the same water bodies varies significantly between different studies. Therefore, since early 1990 s, wild organisms have been used in research on environmental contamination with pharmaceuticals. Indeed, pharmaceutical levels measured in biological matrices may better reflect their overall presence in the aquatic environments as such levels include not only direct exposure of a given organisms to a specific pollutant but also processes such as bioaccumulation and biomagnification. In the present paper, data concerning occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic biota was reviewed. So far, pharmaceuticals have been studied mainly in fish and molluscs, with only a few papers available on crustaceans and macroalgae. The most commonly found pharmaceuticals both in freshwater and marine organisms are antibiotics, antidepressants and NSAIDS while there is no information about the presence of anticancer drugs in aquatic organisms. Furthermore, only single studies were conducted in Africa and Australia. Hence, systematization of up-to-date knowledge, the main aim of this review, is needed for further research targeting.

Abstract
Antibiotics are extensively used to treat human and animal diseases and are especially used in animal production to promote the growth performance of livestock and aquatic animals. Sulphonamides, as important drugs for aquatic animals, are often used in aquaculture to prevent and treat diseases. However, various antibiotics found in the aquatic environment exhibit varying degrees of toxicity to aquatic organisms. Antibiotics in wastewater produced in industrial and agricultural processes are not thoroughly removed by sewage treatment and are released into water, which results in varying degrees of pollution of the surrounding water environment, forcing people to pay attention towards the ecosystem. Several studies have investigated the impact of antibiotics on aquatic organisms in water environment; however, only a few studies have investigated the underlying mechanism. Antibiotics persisting in an aquatic environment for a long time can cause genotoxicity and histopathological changes in various aquatic organisms. Therefore, this paper reviews the sources of antibiotics in aquatic environment, the pollution status of sulfonamides in aquatic environment at home and abroad, and focuses on the research status of ecotoxicological effects of sulfonamides on aquatic organisms. Because there are not only antibiotic pollution, but also many other pollutants, such as heavy metals, micro plastics and other chemicals, it will be a challenge to determine the combined effects of antibiotics or other pollutants on aquatic organisms in future environmental toxicity studies. Sulphonamides are ubiquitously detected in the water environment. Sulfamethoxazole is one of the least efficient antibiotics removed in wastewater treatment plants. Interaction of sulphonamides with other antibiotics needs more attention. Multigeneration studies related to the water environment are needed.

Abstract
Simple Summary In recent years, the use of antibiotics has increased worldwide in both human and veterinary fields. This led to them accumulating in the environment to such an extent that they are actually included in the category of contaminants of emerging concern. For this reason, many of them have been included in monitoring lists of potential pollutants by competent authorities in order to limit their concentration in surface waters and to determine the risk to the aquatic environments. From this perspective, the aim of this review is to update and discuss the available data on antibiotic residues, using bivalves as biomonitoring organisms. Bivalves are good candidate for this purpose, being globally present in large and accessible populations, sedentary and able to accumulate several xenobiotics thanks to their large filtration capacity. The current research indicates that antibiotics’ presence in bivalves has been investigated along European, American and Asian coasts. Except for tetracycline, determined at high concentration in the North Adriatic Sea, all antibiotics residues in bivalves were under the maximum residual limit established by the competent authorities. Nevertheless, further investigations are necessary in order to prevent antimicrobial resistance, preserve the environment from antibiotic pollution and monitor the associated risk for animals and humans. Abstract Antibiotics are used for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes in both human and veterinary medicine and as growth promoting agents in farms and aquaculture. They can accumulate in environmental matrices and in the food chain, causing adverse effects in humans and animals including the development of antibiotic resistance. This review aims to update and discuss the available data on antibiotic residues, using bivalves as biomonitoring organisms. The current research indicates that antibiotics’ presence in bivalves has been investigated along European, American and Asian coasts, with the majority of studies reported for the last. Several classes of antibiotics have been detected, with a higher frequency of detection reported for macrolides, sulfonamides and quinolones. The highest concentration was instead reported for tetracyclines in bivalves collected in the North Adriatic Sea. Only oxytetracycline levels detected in this latter site exceeded the maximum residual limit established by the competent authorities. Moreover, the risk that can be derived from bivalve consumption, calculated considering the highest concentrations of antibiotics residues reported in the analyzed studies, is actually negligible. Nevertheless, further supervisions are needed in order to preserve the environment from antibiotic pollution, prevent the development of antimicrobial resistance and reduce the health risk derived from seafood consumption.

Abstract
In this work, a simple and fast analytical method based on a self-weighted alternating trilinear decomposition (SWATLD) algorithm coupled with excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence was developed for the simultaneous determination of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) illegally added to health products. With the second-order advantage, the proposed method obtained satisfactory results in the presence of peak overlap and unknown interferences. The analysis time for a single sample is only 0.8 minutes. The average spiked recoveries of SMZ and TMP in three health product spiked samples were in the range of 91.0-106.2% and 86.8-107.8%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were lower than 8.6%. In addition, verification parameters including sensitivity (SEN), selectivity (SEL), the limit of detection (LOD), the limit of quantification (LOQ), intra-day precision, and inter-day precision were calculated, and the results show that the proposed method is feasible. The quantitative results of the proposed method were further confirmed by the LC-MS/MS method, which proved that the proposed method was efficient and green for drug-abuse monitoring of SMZ and TMP in health products.

Abstract
Sulphonamides (SAs) are widely used in animal husbandry. In our work, based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes, a novel residue method was developed for highly sensitive and determination trace levels of sulfamethoxazole, acetyl sulfamethoxazole and aditoprim in edible swine tissues by LC-MS/MS with magnetic solid-phase extraction. The samples were extracted using 2% ammoniated acetonitrile and purified by magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE). Under the optimal conditions, good linearity was obtained ranging from 5 to 160 μg kg-1. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 2 μg kg-1 and 5 μg kg-1 respectively. The average recoveries were 73.9-94.8% at different spiking levels. The inter-day RSDs were 6.2-10.7% and the intra-day RSDs were 2.4-5.4%. MSPE based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes was a simple and efficient method to enrich and separate the analyses and could be successfully applied for extraction of sulfamethoxazole, acetyl sulfamethoxazole and aditoprim residues in swine tissues.

Abstract
In this work, eight plants of Juncus sp. and ten of Salicornia europaea were used for an uptake assay of pharmaceuticals (flumequine, cirpofloxacin, enrofloxacin, carbamazepine, diclofenac and ibuprofen) by irrigation at three concentration levels: 10 ng mL-1 (low level); 700 ng mL-1 (medium level) and 10 μg mL-1 (high level). Two plants irrigated with pharmaceutical-free water were set up as controls. For each level, two plants were watered every day with 50 mL (Juncus sp.) and every two days with 20 mL (Salicornia europaea) of aqueous solutions containing all the analytes at the described concentrations. Plants irrigated at 10 μg mL-1 were significantly the most affected, whereas the rest of the plants remained, in general, largely displayed no apparent physiological effects throughout the 30 days (Juncus sp.) and 21 days (Salicornia europaea) assays. Leaves and stems were cut every seven days and roots were collected at the end of the assay. The samples were lyophilized, submitted to a microwave assisted extraction using 5 mL of acetonitrile:water mixture (1:1, v/v) and they were analyzed (in triplicate) in a liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry instrument. Most of the analytes were quantified in many of the samples corresponding to the three exposure levels with the highest concentrations obtained at high exposure levels. Ibuprofen was not detected in any sample and enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and diclofenac were not detected in the samples from Salicornia europaea.

Abstract
The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in aquatic biota has been received much less attention than their presence in surface or waste water, and it was not until the mid-2000s, this gap started to be addressed. Here, we present SQUEEZe (Solid-liQuid Ultrasound Extraction with QuE Z-Sep/C18 as dispersive clean-up): a fast method for analysis of the trace 47 PhACs in fish muscle. Compared to our previously reported method [1], it offers alternatives with improvements in recoveries, number of analytes, sample volume and solvent used. The key aspects of this method are:•The ultrasound extraction was performed with acetonitrile/isopropanol 0.1% V/V formic acid. A clean-up step using QuE Z-Sep/C18 sorbents was employed to reduce lipid content of the extracts and further matrix effects in the detection of the analytes.•A HPLC separation with a Kinetex EVO C18 packed column in 11 min was optimized. MS and MS/MS data were collected using SWATH acquisition on the SCIEX X500R QTOF in (+)-ESI mode.•The method validated at 3 different concentrations levels: 5, 25 and 50 ng/g fish. It presented good intraday/interday reproducibility and absolute recoveries ≥ 60% for majority of analytes in composite homogenate muscle matrix of Squalius cephalus.•10 out 47 compounds were detected in fish samples.

Abstract
The abundant use of antibiotics leads to antibiotic residues in frequently consumed foods. Residual antibiotics in food may have adverse effects on humans by directly causing disease via low-dose exposure and indirect harm via antibiotic resistance. However, the current methods for antibiotic extraction and analysis in food have not yet formed a uniform standard, and only a few data exist regarding the residual antibiotic condition in various types of foods. Hence, we review the literature since 2008 to summarize analytical methods and residue status of antibiotics in food. Then, we discuss the causes of antibiotic residues in food and the possible hazards to human health. We hope that the joint efforts of the scientific community and political circles will lead to the formation of a unified standard for the extraction and analysis of antibiotics in food, to allow for comprehensive monitoring of residual antibiotics and ensure human health.

Abstract
In the present study, a multi-class multi-residue method for the simultaneous detection and determination of antibiotics in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was developed and validated. The method based on UHPLC-MS/MS proved to be a rapid, highly selective and sensitive tool, requiring minimum sample preparation, for screening and detection of 47 compounds from eight different classes. The validation was performed according to EU regulation 2002/657/EC, proving the method's suitability for application in routine analysis. The method was applied to the analysis of 30 samples of farmed European sea bass purchased in different supermarkets in Portugal. Antibacterial residues were detected in 6 of the 30 analysed samples, namely enrofloxacin and oxytetracycline, in concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 12 µg kg-1.

Abstract
This study aimed at developing an analytical method for the extraction and quantification of 21 pharmaceutical actives compounds (PhACs) present in fish muscle. Using Norwegian Atlantic salmon as matrix, two extraction methods for PhACs were tested: ultrasound extraction (USE) using methanol (MeOH), acetonitrile (MeCN) or a mixture of MeCN:MeOH (1:1, v/v) as extracting solvents, and QuEChERS method using three different extraction salts. After selecting QuEChERS Original as extracting method of the analytes, three different clean-up methods were evaluated with respect to their efficiency to remove coextracted fat and lipids such as Enhanced Matrix Removal (EMR) and HLB prime. The dispersive-SPE EMR yielded the best recoveries for 21 of 27 analytes. PhACs were quantified by UPLC-MS/MS using SWATH acquisition mode. The method was validated in terms of recoveries, accuracy, linearity, precision, matrix effects at three levels of concentration: 25, 200 and 500 ng g-1 dw of fish muscle. For the majority of the analytes the recoveries were over 70%. Finally, the validated method was applied to natural riverine fish from the Evrotas river (Greece) and the Adige river (Italy) with positive findings for acetaminophen, propranolol, and venlafaxine reaching concentrations as high as 80 ng g-1 of muscle.

Abstract
Pharmaceuticals have been considered 'contaminants of emerging concern' for more than 20 years. In that time, many laboratory studies have sought to identify hazard and assess risk in the aquatic environment, whilst field studies have searched for targeted candidates and occurrence trends using advanced analytical techniques. However, a lack of a systematic approach to the detection and quantification of pharmaceuticals has provided a fragmented literature of serendipitous approaches. Evaluation of the extent of the risk for the plethora of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals available requires the reliable measurement of trace levels of contaminants across different environmental compartments (water, sediment, biota - of which biota has been largely neglected). The focus on pharmaceutical concentrations in surface waters and other exposure media have therefore limited both the characterisation of the exposome in aquatic wildlife and the understanding of cause and effect relationships. Here, we compile the current analytical approaches and available occurrence and accumulation data in biota to review the current state of research in the field. Our analysis provides evidence in support of the 'Matthew Effect' and raises critical questions about the use of targeted analyte lists for biomonitoring. We provide six recommendations to stimulate and improve future research avenues.

Abstract
A procedure based on microwave assisted extraction for the determination of 6 pharmaceuticals in samples of Lavandula dentata, Salicornia ramosissima and Juncus sp. by liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF/MS) was optimized and validated. Best results were obtained using microwave assisted extraction of 1.0g of homogeneous lyophilized samples and 5mL of a mixture ACN:H2O (1:1 v/v) as extracting solvent. Analytical recoveries ranged from 60 to 107% with relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 15%. Limits of quantitation (LOQ) for the 6 pharmaceuticals flumequine (FLM), carbamazepine (CBZ), ciprofloxacin (CPR), enrofloxacin (ENR), diclofenac (DCL), and ibuprofen (IBU) were in the range 20.8-125ngg-1. The method was satisfactory applied for an uptake study in Lavandula dentata samples finding quantifying concentrations of FLM and CBZ in roots, leaf and stem.

Abstract
A novel pretreatment method involving microwave-assisted extraction and solid-phase purification combined with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (MAE-SPP-DLLME) followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was established for the simultaneous determination of six antibacterial pharmaceuticals including metronidazole, tinidazole, chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol, malachite green and crystal violet. The conditions of MAE were optimized using an orthogonal design and the optimal conditions were found to be 8mL for acetonitrile, 50°C for 5min. Then, neutral alumina column was employed in the solid-phase purification. Finally, the critical parameters affecting DLLME, including selection of extraction and dispersive solvent, adjustment of pH, salt concentration, extraction time, were investigated by single factor study. Under optimum conditions, good linearities (r>0.9991) and satisfied recoveries (Recoveries>87.0%, relative standard deviation (RSD)<6.3%) were observed for all of the target analytes. The limits of detection and quantification were 4.54-101.3pgkg(-1) and 18.02-349.1pgkg(-1), respectively. Intra-day and inter-day RSDs were all lower than 3.6%. An obvious reduction in matrix effect was observed by this method compared with microwave assisted extraction followed by purification. The established method was sensitive, rapid, accurate and employable to simultaneously determine target analytes in farmed fish, river fish and marine fish.

Abstract
In the present research, a combined extraction method of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) in conjunction with solid phase extraction (SPE) was applied to isolation and enrichment of selected drugs (metoprolol, ticlopidine, propranolol, carbamazepine, naproxen, acenocumarol, diclofenac, ibuprofen) from fish tissues. The extracted analytes were separated and determined by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (UHPLC-UV) technique. The selectivity of the developed UHPLC-UV method was confirmed by comparison with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) analysis. The important parameters, such as composition of type and pH of extraction solvent, solid/liquid rate volume of extraction solvent and number of extraction cycles were studied. The ultrasonic parameters, such as time, power and temperature of the process were optimized by using a half-fraction factorial central composite design (CCD). The mixture of 10 mL of methanol and 7 mL of water (pH 2.2) (three times) was chosen for the extraction of selected drug from fish tissues. The results showed that the highest recoveries of analytes were obtained with an extraction temperature of 40°C, ultrasonic power of 300 W, extraction time of 30 min. Under the optimal conditions, the linearity of method was 0.12-5.00 μg/g. The determination coefficients (R(2)) were from 0.979 to 0.998. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) for the extracted compounds were 0.04-0.17 μg/g and 0.12-0.50 μg/g, respectively. The recoveries were between 85.5% and 115.8%.

Abstract
A new high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS) method was developed for a simultaneous multi-residue analysis of 22 sulfonamides (SAs) and their metabolites in edible animal (pig, beef, sheep and chicken) tissues. Sample preparation was optimized on the basis of the "QuEChERS" protocol. The analytes were identified using their LC retention times and accurate mass; the identification was further confirmed by multi-stage high mass accuracy (<5ppm) mass spectrometry. The performance of the method was evaluated according to the EU guidelines for the validation of screening methods for the analysis of veterinary drugs residues. Acceptable values were obtained for: linearity (R(2)<0.99), limit of detection (LOD, 3-26μg/kg), limit of quantification (LOQ, 11-88μg/kg), accuracy (recovery 88-112%), intra- and inter-day precision 1-14 and 1-17%, respectively, decision limit (CCα) and detection capability (CCβ) around the maximum residue limits (MRL) of SAs (100μg/kg). The method was validated by analysis of a reference material FAPAS-02188 "Pig kidney" with ǀ Z-scoreǀ<0.63. The method was applied to various matrices (kidney, liver, muscle) originated from pig, beef, sheep, and chicken) allowing the simultaneous quantification of target sulfonamides at concentration levels above the MRL/2 and the identification of untargeted compounds such as N(4)-acetyl metabolites using multi-stage high mass accuracy mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Sulphonamides and chloramphenicol antibiotics were analysed by using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in sea and farmed prawn (Penaeus monodon) samples obtained from the coastal region of southern India during 2011-2012. Average recoveries were 77-99% and precision was between 1% and 8%. The results revealed that in sea prawn samples neither of the two antibiotics was detected, but in farmed samples from coastal Andhra Pradesh some sulphonamides were detected in a concentration range greater than the maximum residual limit as set by Council Directive 2377/90 EC.

Abstract
The presence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment is an ever-increasing issue of concern as they are specifically designed to target specific metabolic and molecular pathways in organisms, and they may have the potential for unintended effects on nontarget species. Information on the presence of pharmaceuticals in biota is still scarce, but the scientific literature on the subject has established the possibility of bioaccumulation in exposed aquatic organisms through other environmental compartments. However, few studies have correlated both bioaccumulation of pharmaceutical compounds and the consequent effects. Analytical methodology to detect pharmaceuticals at trace quantities in biota has advanced significantly in the last few years. Nonetheless, there are still unresolved analytical challenges associated with the complexity of biological matrices, which require exhaustive extraction and purification steps, and highly sensitive and selective detection techniques. This review presents the trends in the analysis of pharmaceuticals in aquatic organisms in the last decade, recent data about the occurrence of these compounds in natural biota, and the environmental implications that chronic exposure could have on aquatic wildlife.

Abstract
Using fish serum albumin (FSA) as the model protein, molecular fluorescence spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were applied to study the effect of protein on the extraction of fluoroquinolone (FQ) residues in fish meat. There was a strong interaction between FQs and protein through hydrogen bonds, which could be broken as protein degenerated with 60-100% (v/v) acetonitrile acid solution, and FQs bound with protein were released in various degrees. On the basis of the results, a novel sample preparation procedure loosely based on QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) methodology was developed for the determination of FQ residues in fish muscle samples, using 90% (v/v) acetonitrile acid solution as the extractant, combined with a dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) cleanup step. Mean recoveries of four FQs from spiked samples at a concentration range of 50-200 ng g(-1) were 73.3-95.9% with relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 10.7%.
