Applications of metal organic frameworks in dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fascinating family of crystalline porous materials made up of metal clusters and organic linkers. In comparison with other porous materials, MOFs have unique characteristics including high surface area, homogeneous open cavities, and permanent high porosity with variable shapes and sizes. For these reasons, MOFs have recently been explored as sorbents in sample preparation by solid-phase extraction (SPE). However, SPE requires large amounts of sorbents and suffers from limited contact surfaces with analytes, which compromises extraction recovery and efficiency. Dispersive SPE (D-SPE) overcomes these limitations by dispersing the sorbents into the sample, which in turn increases contact with the analytes. Miniaturization of the microextraction procedure, particularly the amount of sorbent reduces the amount consumed of the organic solvent and shorten the time required to attain the equilibrium state. This may explain the reported high efficiency and applicability of MOFs in dispersive micro SPE (D-µ-SPE). This method retains all the advantages of solid phase extraction while also being simpler, faster, cheaper, and, in some cases, more effective in comparison with D-SPE. Besides, D-µ-SPE requires smaller amounts of the sorbents which reduces the overall cost, and the amount of waste generated from the analytical process. In this review, we discuss the applications of MOFs in D-µ-SPE of various analytes including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organic dyes from miscellaneous matrices including water samples, biological samples and food samples.

Advances in magnetic analytical extraction techniques for detecting antibiotic residues in edible samples

The widespread use of antibiotics in agricultural and animal husbandry to treat bacterial illnesses has resulted in a rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These bacteria can grow when antibiotic residues are present in food items, especially in edible animal products. As a result, it is crucial to monitor and regulate the amounts of antibiotics in food. Magnetic analytical extractions (MAEs) have emerged as a potential approach for extracting antibiotic residues from food using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). Recent improvements in MAEs have resulted in the emergence of novel MNPs with better selectivity and sensitivity for the extraction of antibiotic residues from food samples. Consequently, this review paper addresses current developments in MAE for extracting antibiotic residues from edible samples. It also provides a critical analysis of contemporary MAE practices. The current issues and potential future developments in this field are also discussed, thereby providing a framework for future study paths.

Advances in Aptamer-Based Conjugate Recognition Techniques for the Detection of Small Molecules in Food

Small molecules are significant risk factors for causing food safety issues, posing serious threats to human health. Sensitive screening for hazards is beneficial for enhancing public security. However, traditional detection methods are unable to meet the requirements for the field screening of small molecules. Therefore, it is necessary to develop applicable methods with high levels of sensitivity and specificity to identify the small molecules. Aptamers are short-chain nucleic acids that can specifically bind to small molecules. By utilizing aptamers to enhance the performance of recognition technology, it is possible to achieve high selectivity and sensitivity levels when detecting small molecules. There have been several varieties of aptamer target recognition techniques developed to improve the ability to detect small molecules in recent years. This review focuses on the principles of detection platforms, classifies the conjugating methods between small molecules and aptamers, summarizes advancements in aptamer-based conjugate recognition techniques for the detection of small molecules in food, and seeks to provide emerging powerful tools in the field of point-of-care diagnostics.

Cavitation-Effect-Based Treatments and Extractions for Superior Fruit and Milk Valorisation

Ultrasound generates cavities in liquids with high-energy behaviour due to large pressure variations, leading to (bio)chemical effects and material modification. Numerous cavity-based treatments in food processes have been reported, but the transition from research to industrial applications is hampered by specific engineering factors, such as the combination of several ultrasound sources, more powerful wave generators or tank geometry. The challenges and development of cavity-based treatments developed for the food industry are reviewed with examples limited to two representative raw materials (fruit and milk) with significantly different properties. Both active compound extraction and food processing techniques based on ultrasound are taken into consideration.

Fe3O4@Au-metal organic framework nanozyme with peroxidase-like activity and its application for colorimetric ascorbic acid detection

A free radical scavenging system based on Fe₃O₄@Au/MOF-ABTS˙⁺ has formed the basis of a novel method for the highly sensitive and specific spectrophotometric determination of ascorbic acid (AA). The Fe₃O₄@Au/MOF nanozyme with magnetic separation properties was effectively prepared and evaluated using an environmentally friendly technique. Nanomaterials have the advantages of superparamagnetism, biocompatibility, chemical stability, and enhanced synergistic peroxidase-like activity, which can be utilized in catalysis to oxidise the peroxidase substrate 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) into a green-colored product in the presence of H₂O₂. AA as an antioxidant has scavenging effects on ABTS radicals and can reduce green ABTS˙⁺ to uncolored ABTS^2-, contributing to a substantial reduction in green color. Based on such a premise, a highly selective and sensitive chromogenic sensing method depending on the peroxidase-like activity of the nanocomposites was developed in order to achieve the efficient detection of AA in real samples. Under optimum conditions, the proposed technique had a detection range of 0.001-0.1 mmol L^-1, a limit of detection of 0.098 μmol L^-1, and a detection time of only 30 seconds. The newly proposed colorimetric analysis method devoid of enzymes has broad application potential in the areas of quality control and quality and safety detection.

Polyoxometalate-based materials in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods: A review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as metal-oxide anions have exceptional properties like high negative charges, remarkable redox abilities, unique ligand properties and availability of organic grafting. Moreover, the amenability of POMs to modification with different materials makes them suitable as precursors to further obtain new composites. Due to their unique attributes, POMs and their composites have been utilized as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods, respectively. A survey of the recent progress and developments of POM-based materials in these methods is therefore desirable, and should be of great interest. In this review article, POM-based materials, their properties as well as their identification methods, and analytical applications as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts, and corresponding mechanisms of action, where relevant, are reviewed. Some current issues of the utilization of these materials and their future prospects in analytical chemistry are discussed.

A descriptive and comparative analysis on the adsorption of PPCPs by molecularly imprinted polymers

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have aroused great attention as a new material for the removal or detection of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). However, it is not clear about the superiority and deficiency of MIPs in the process of removing or detecting PPCPs. Herein, we evaluated the performance of MIPs in the aspects of adsorption capacity, binding affinity, adsorption rate, and compatibility to other techniques, and proposed ways to improve its performance. Without regard to the selectivity of MIPs, for the PPCPs adsorption, MIPs surprisingly did not always perform better than the conventional adsorbents (non-imprinted polymers, biochar, activated carbon and resin), indicating that MIPs should be used where selectivity is crucial, for example recovery of specific PPCPs in an environmental sample extraction process. Compared to the traditional solid-phase extraction for PPCPs detection pretreatment, the usage of MIPs as substitute extraction agents could obtain high selectivity of specific substance, due to the uniformity and effectiveness of the specific sites. A promising development in the future would be to combine other simple and rapid quantitative technologies, such as electro/photochemical sensor and catalytic degradation, to realize rapid and sensitive detection of trace PPCPs.

Critical review of solid phase extraction for multiresidue clean-up and pre-concentration of antibiotics from livestock and poultry manure

The release of antibiotics into the environment from agricultural industries has received tremendous attention in recent years. Nonpoint source contamination of the terrestrial environment by these compounds can result from fertilisation of agricultural soils with manure. The presence of antibiotics and their metabolites in manure may pose a threat to agro-ecosystems. This may result in the emergence of antibiotic resistance bacteria in humans through the food chain and this is a major concern globally at the moment. Therefore, monitoring of manure for antibiotic residues is of vital importance in order to assess the risks of environmental pollution to human health by these drugs. Several sample pre-treatment techniques have been developed for the extraction of antibiotic residues from complex matrices including manure over the years. Despite new developments in recent years in separation science where the common trend is miniaturisation and green approaches, solid-phase extraction is still the most widely used technique in the extraction of antibiotics from agricultural wastes such as manure. In view of this, the aim of this review was to give a critical overview of studies that have been conducted in the past 6 years on the extraction of antibiotic residues from manure employing solid-phase extraction based on Oasis HLB and Strata-X. Adsorption mechanisms of these sorbents were also briefly discussed.

Functional Hybrid Micro/Nanoentities Promote Agro-Food Safety Inspection

The rapid development of nanomaterials has provided a good theoretical basis and technical support to solve the problems of food safety inspection. The combination of functionalized composite nanomaterials and well-known detection methods is gradually applied to detect hazardous substances, such as chemical residues and toxins, in agricultural food products. This review concentrates on the latest agro-food safety inspection techniques and methodologies constructed with the assistance of new hybrid micro/nanoentities, such as molecular imprinting polymers integrated with quantum dots (MIPs@QDs), molecular imprinting polymers integrated with upconversion luminescent nanoparticles (MIPs@UCNPs), upconversion luminescent nanoparticles combined with metal-organic frameworks (UCNPs@MOFs), magnetic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs@Fe₃O₄), magnetic covalent-organic frameworks (Fe₃O₄@COFs), covalent-organic frameworks doped with quantum dots (COFs@QDs), nanobody-involved immunoassay for fast inspection, etc. The presented summary and discussion favor a relevant outlook for further integrating various disciplines, like material science, nanotechnology, and analytical methodology, for addressing new challenges that emerge in agro-food research fields.

A highly reproducible SERS sensor based on an Au nanoparticles/graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposite for label-free quantitative detection of antibiotics

Ampicillin and nitrofurantoin, as broad-spectrum antibiotics, are widely used in the prevention of animal diseases and to ensure livestock growth. Large amounts of antibiotic residues exist in animal-derived foods, affecting food quality and safety, causing adverse side effects, such as allergic and toxic reactions, and increasing bacterial resistance. A sensitive surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor is provided to detect low-concentration antibiotics (ampicillin and nitrofurantoin). The sensor is based on an Au nanoparticles/graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposite prepared by an in situ reduction method. The detection limits of ampicillin and nitrofurantoin are as low as 0.01 ng mL^-1 and 5 ng mL^-1, respectively. The relative spectral intensity of the nitrofurantoin characteristic peak has a good linear relationship with the concentration of nitrofurantoin in the range of 500 ng mL^-1 and 5 ng mL^-1 (R² = 0.99235). The structure also allows multi-sample measurement for a variety of antibiotics at the same time. The SERS sensor is easy to prepare, with high uniformity and reproducibility, and the sample does not require complex pretreatment and preparation. Sensitive and quantitative detection of antibiotics by the SERS sensor is of great interest in the fields of health care, food preparation, and environmental sampling.

Chemical Contamination Pathways and the Food Safety Implications along the Various Stages of Food Production: A Review

Historically, chemicals exceeding maximum allowable exposure levels have been disastrous to underdeveloped countries. The global food industry is primarily affected by toxic chemical substances because of natural and anthropogenic factors. Food safety is therefore threatened due to contamination by chemicals throughout the various stages of food production. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the form of pesticides and other chemical substances such as Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) have a widely documented negative impact due to their long-lasting effect on the environment. This present review focuses on the chemical contamination pathways along the various stages of food production until the food reaches the consumer. The contamination of food can stem from various sources such as the agricultural sector and pollution from industrialized regions through the air, water, and soil. Therefore, it is imperative to control the application of chemicals during food packaging, the application of pesticides, and antibiotics in the food industry to prevent undesired residues on foodstuffs. Ultimately, the protection of consumers from food-related chemical toxicity depends on stringent efforts from regulatory authorities both in developed and underdeveloped nations.

Synthesis of Magnetic Metal-Organic Frame Material and Its Application in Food Sample Preparation

A variety of contaminants in food is an important aspect affecting food safety. Due to the presence of its trace amounts and the complexity of food matrix, it is very difficult to effectively separate and accurately detect them. The magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites with different structures and functions provide a new choice for the purification of food matrix and enrichment of trace targets, thus providing a new direction for the development of new technologies in food safety detection with high sensitivity and efficiency. The MOF materials composed of inorganic subunits and organic ligands have the advantages of regular pore structure, large specific surface area and good stability, which have been thoroughly studied in the pretreatment of complex food samples. MMOF materials combined different MOF materials with various magnetic nanoparticles, adding magnetic characteristics to the advantages of MOF materials, which are in terms of material selectivity, biocompatibility, easy operation and repeatability. Combined with solid phase extraction (SPE) technique, MMOF materials have been widely used in the food pretreatment. This article introduced the new preparation strategies of different MMOF materials, systematically summarizes their applications as SPE adsorbents in the pretreatment of food contaminants and analyzes and prospects their future application prospects and development directions.

Application of sorptive micro-extraction techniques for the pre-concentration of antibiotic drug residues from food samples - a review

Antibiotic residues have become a major concern worldwide as food contaminants due to the risk that they may pose to human health. The presence of these residues in food is due to improper veterinary practices. Consequently, rapid and cost-effective clean-up methods prior to analysis for these residues in food matrices are increasingly becoming necessary in order to ensure food safety. Miniaturised extraction and pre-concentration techniques have been developed as alternatives to conventional extraction procedures in recent years. Furthermore, the current trends in analytical sample preparation favour extraction techniques that comply with the principles of green analytical chemistry. Solid phase micro-extraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, stir cake sorptive extraction and fabric phase sorptive extraction methods are very promising sorbent-based sorptive micro-extraction techniques, and they are compliant to the principles of green chemistry. This review critically discusses the application of these techniques in the extraction and pre-concentration of antibiotic residues from food samples in the years 2015 to 2020.

Recent Applications of Magnetic Nanoparticles in Food Analysis

Nanotechnology has become a topic of interest due to the outstanding advantages that the use of nanomaterials offers in many fields. Among them, magnetic nanoparticles (m-NPs) have been one of the most widely applied in recent years. In addition to the unique features of nanomaterials in general, which exclusively appear at nanoscale, these present magnetic or paramagnetic properties that result of great interest in many applications. In particular, in the area of food analysis, the use of these nanomaterials has undergone a considerable increase since they can be easily separated from the matrix in sorbent-based extractions, providing a considerable simplification of the procedures. This allows reducing cost and giving fast responses, which is essential in the food trade to guarantee consumer safety. These materials can also be easily tunable, providing higher selectivity. Moreover, their particular electrical, thermal and optical characteristics allow enhancing sensor signals, increasing the sensitivity of the approaches based on this type of device. The aim of this review article is to summarise the most remarkable applications of m-NPs in food analysis in the last five years (2016–2020) showing a general view of the use of such materials in the field.
