Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of cognitive function on suicidal tendency in patients with schizophrenia is still inconclusive. This study aimed to explore the effect of cognitive impairment on suicidal tendency in schizophrenia patients and the risk factors of suicidal tendency in schizophrenia patients with cognitive impairment. METHODS A total of 988 subjects were recruited for this study and finally 517 patients were included in the statistical analysis. Sociodemographic information was collected for each subject. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess patients' cognitive functioning. In addition, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) positive subscale, Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSI) were used to assess psychotic symptoms, severity of insomnia, and intensity of suicidal ideation, respectively. RESULTS Schizophrenia patients with cognitive dysfunction were significantly less likely to develop suicidal tendencies than those without cognitive dysfunction (P < 0.05, OR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.39-0.81). In patients with cognitive impairment, those with suicidal tendency had substantially higher scores on BSI, ISI, EC, PD, IRI, F1, and PANSS positive subscale, and took more types of antipsychotic drugs than those without suicidal tendency (all P < 0.05), and the results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that, PANSS positive subscale score (B = 0.06, p = 0.04, OR = 1.07, 95%CI: 1.00-1.13) was a risk factor for suicidal tendencies. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that schizophrenia patients with cognitive dysfunction are significantly less likely to develop suicidal tendencies. Moreover, positive symptom is a risk factor for suicidal tendencies in schizophrenia patients with cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
Persons diagnosed with schizophrenia (SCZ) or bipolar I disorder (BPI) are at high risk for self-injurious behavior, suicidal ideation, and suicidal behaviors (SB). Characterizing associations between diagnosed health problems, prior pharmacological treatments, and polygenic scores (PGS) has potential to inform risk stratification. We examined self-reported SB and ideation using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) among 3,942 SCZ and 5,414 BPI patients receiving care within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). These cross-sectional data were integrated with electronic health records (EHRs), and compared across lifetime diagnoses, treatment histories, follow-up screenings, and mortality data. PGS were constructed using available genomic data for related traits. Genome-wide association studies were performed to identify and prioritize specific loci. Only 20% of the veterans who reported SB had a corroborating ICD-9/10 EHR code. Among those without prior SB, more than 20% reported new-onset SB at follow-up. SB were associated with a range of additional clinical diagnoses, and with treatment with specific classes of psychotropic medications (e.g., antidepressants, antipsychotics, etc.). PGS for externalizing behaviors, smoking initiation, suicide attempt, and major depressive disorder were associated with SB. The GWAS for SB yielded no significant loci. Among individuals with a diagnosed mental illness, self-reported SB were strongly associated with clinical variables across several EHR domains. Analyses point to sequelae of substance-related and psychiatric comorbidities as strong correlates of prior and subsequent SB. Nonetheless, past SB was frequently not documented in health records, underscoring the value of regular screening with direct, in-person assessments, especially among high-risk individuals.

Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SZ) are associated with higher odds of suicide attempt (SA). In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of BD and SZ genetic liabilities on SA, also considering the contribution of behavioral traits, socioeconomic factors, and substance use disorders. Leveraging large-scale genome-wide association data from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) and the UK Biobank (UKB), we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the putative causal effect of BD (41,917 cases, 371,549 controls) and SZ (53,386 cases, 77,258 controls) on SA (26,590 cases, 492,022 controls). Then, we assessed the putative causal effect of BD and SZ on behavioral traits, socioeconomic factors, and substance use disorders. Considering the associations identified, we evaluated the direct causal effect of behavioral traits, socioeconomic factors, and substance use disorders on SA using a multivariable MR approach. The genetic liabilities to BD and SZ were associated with higher odds of SA (BD odds ratio (OR) = 1.24, p = 3.88 × 10-12; SZ OR = 1.09, p = 2.44 × 10-20). However, while the effect of mental distress (OR = 1.17, p = 1.02 × 10-4) and risk-taking (OR = 1.52, p = 0.028) on SA was independent of SZ genetic liability, the BD-SA relationship appeared to account for the effect of these risk factors. Similarly, the association with loneliness on SA was null after accounting for the effect of SZ genetic liability. These findings highlight the complex interplay between genetic risk of psychiatric disorders and behavioral traits in the context of SA, suggesting the need for a comprehensive mental health assessment for high-risk individuals.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with suicidal ideation in schizophrenia patients in China using decision tree and logistic regression models. From October 2020 to March 2022, patients with schizophrenia were chosen from Chifeng Anding Hospital and Daqing Third Hospital in Heilongjiang Province. A total of 300 patients with schizophrenia who met the inclusion criteria were investigated by questionnaire. The questionnaire covered general data, suicidal ideation, childhood trauma, social support, depressive symptoms and psychological resilience. Logistic regression analysis revealed that childhood trauma and depressive symptoms were risk factors for suicidal ideation in schizophrenia (OR = 2.330, 95%CI: 1.177 ~ 4.614; OR = 10.619, 95%CI: 5.199 ~ 21.688), while psychological resilience was a protective factor for suicidal ideation in schizophrenia (OR = 0.173, 95%CI: 0.073 ~ 0.409). The results of the decision tree model analysis demonstrated that depressive symptoms, psychological resilience and childhood trauma were influential factors for suicidal ideation in patients with schizophrenia (p < 0.05). The area under the ROC for the logistic regression model and the decision tree model were 0.868 (95% CI: 0.821 ~ 0.916) and 0.863 (95% CI: 0.814 ~ 0.912) respectively, indicating excellent accuracy of the models. Meanwhile, the logistic regression model had a sensitivity of 0.834 and a specificity of 0.743 when the Youden index was at its maximum. The decision tree model had a sensitivity of 0.768 and a specificity of 0.8. Decision trees in combination with logistic regression models are of high value in the study of factors influencing suicidal ideation in schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
AIM People with serious mental illness (SMI) are at an increased risk for suicide. Social approach and avoidance motivations are linked to social functioning, and social isolation is a risk factor for suicide. This study uses ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to understand social approach and avoidance motivations in relation to symptoms and suicidal ideation (SI). METHODS Participants (N = 128) diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or a mood disorder with psychotic features completed assessments of SI and symptoms at baseline. They completed EMA surveys 3×/day for 10 days. EMA surveys included questions about approach and avoidance motivations and psychotic symptoms. Participants were split into four groups based on the median scores of approach and avoidance. RESULTS Participants with SI at baseline had higher mean social avoidance motivation, t(126) = 2.84, p = .003, and lower mean social approach motivation, t(126) = -2.44, p = .008, than participants without baseline SI. Greater baseline positive symptoms were related to greater mean avoidance, r = .231, p = .009, but not approach motivation. The low approach/high avoidance group had significantly higher current SI than those with high approach/low avoidance (p < .001). Overall, the low approach/high avoidance group reported more EMA-measured voices than the low approach/low avoidance group (p < .001) and the high approach/low avoidance group (p < .001). Similarly, the low approach/high avoidance group reported more EMA-measured suspiciousness than the low approach/low avoidance (p < .001) and the high approach/low avoidance groups (p < .001). CONCLUSION The results of this study point to the role of social approach and avoidance motivations in relation to SI and psychotic symptoms. Clinically, exposure therapies and cognitive behavioral therapies may help to address these social approach and avoidance processes linked to SI.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Models of affect, like the tripartite model, suggest that positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) are independent between subjects and negatively correlated within. Correlations may differ in bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia. Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and clinical ratings, this secondary analysis evaluated the tripartite model by examining PA and NA. Two hundred eighty-one participants with BD or a psychotic disorder completed 30 days of EMA of PA and NA, and clinical raters assessed depression. PA and NA were more related between subjects and less related within subjects among participants with schizophrenia. In BD, lower momentary PA was positively associated with clinical ratings of depression, although greater momentary NA was not significantly associated with clinical ratings. In schizophrenia, the inverse was found. These results suggest that the tripartite model was not confirmed in people with schizophrenia or BD. However, PA and NA manifested associations in BD that were more congruent with population studies than in schizophrenia. These findings may have implications for clinical interventions targeting depression, PA, and NA in these populations.

Abstract
Objective Persons diagnosed with schizophrenia (SCZ) or bipolar I disorder (BPI) are at high risk for self-injurious behavior, suicidal ideation, and suicidal behaviors (SB). Characterizing associations between diagnosed mental and physical health problems, prior pharmacological treatments, and aggregate genetic factors has potential to inform risk stratification and mitigation strategies. Methods In this study of 3,942 SCZ and 5,414 BPI patients receiving VA care, self-reported SB and ideation were assessed using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). These cross-sectional data were integrated with electronic health records (EHR), and compared by lifetime diagnoses, treatment histories, follow-up screenings, and mortality data. Polygenic scores (PGS) for traits related to psychiatric disorders, substance use, and cognition were constructed using available genomic data, and exploratory genome-wide association studies were performed to identify and prioritize specific loci. Results Only 20% of veterans who self-reported SB had a corroborating ICD-9/10 code in their EHR; and among those who denied prior behaviors, more than 20% reported new-onset SB at follow-up. SB were associated with a range of psychiatric and non-psychiatric diagnoses, and with treatment with specific classes of psychotropic medications (e.g., antidepressants, antipsychotics, etc.). PGS for externalizing behaviors, smoking, suicide attempt, and major depressive disorder were also associated with attempt and ideation. Conclusions Among individuals with a diagnosed mental illness, a GWAS for SB did not yield any significant loci. Self-reported SB were strongly associated with clinical variables across several EHR domains. Overall, clinical and polygenic analyses point to sequelae of substance-use related behaviors and other psychiatric comorbidities as strong correlates of prior and subsequent SB. Nonetheless, past SB was frequently not documented in clinical settings, underscoring the value of regular screening based on direct, in-person assessments, especially among high-risk individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Veterans are at increased risk for exposure to trauma, developing serious mental illnesses, and death by suicide. History of trauma correlates with worsening outcomes in patients with bipolar disorder. This study investigated associations between trauma exposure (type and timing) and suicide attempt in Veterans with bipolar disorder. METHODS One hundred six Veterans with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and 815 Veterans with no psychiatric history (age rage = 20-72 years old) completed a clinical questionnaire, the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation, and the Traumatic Live Events Questionnaire. Multinomial logistic regressions investigated correlations between diagnosis, time of trauma (before, during, or after the military), trauma type (attack, illness, accident, child violence, child sexual abuse, and adult sexual abuse), and suicide attempt. RESULTS Seventy-five Veterans with bipolar disorder had comorbid PTSD. Controlling for PTSD, Veterans with bipolar disorder had a higher prevalence of trauma including physical assault [odds ratio (OR) = 2.85; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.39-5.86] and child sexual trauma (OR = 2.89; CI = 1.38-6.05). Veterans with bipolar disorder who endorsed previous suicide attempts (n = 42) had significantly higher levels of exposure to childhood trauma (OR = 5.69; CI = 1.84-17.62). CONCLUSIONS Results support incorporating history of previous trauma exposure when assessing Veterans at risk for bipolar disorder. Especially, trauma characterized as attack and childhood sexual abuse. Particular attention should be given to Veterans with bipolar disorder and exposure to trauma during childhood, which may be associated with increased risk of suicidality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in people with schizophrenia. Identifying risk factors for suicide in schizophrenia is therefore an important clinical and research priority. METHOD A cross-sectional secondary analysis was conducted on the DNA Polymorphisms in Mental Illness Study (DPIM) data. Suicidality data was extracted, and the number of positive and negative symptoms were established for a total of 1494 participants. Logistic and negative binomial regression analyses were conducted to assess for associations between positive or negative symptoms and suicidal ideation, attempt, or number of attempts, whilst adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS Negative symptoms were associated with a reduction in the risk of suicidal ideation (odds ratio [OR]: 0.83; 95 % CI: 0.75-0.91) and suicide attempt (OR: 0.79; 95 % CI: 0.71-0.88) after adjusting for age and sex. Positive symptoms were associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation (OR: 1.06; 95 % CI: 1.03-1.09), suicide attempt (OR: 1.04; 95 % CI: 1.00-1.07) and number of suicide attempts (incidence rate ratio [IRR]: 1.05; 95 % CI: 1.01-1.08). Further adjusting for depressive symptoms slightly increased the magnitude of associations with negative symptoms but attenuated associations between positive symptoms and suicidality to the null. CONCLUSIONS Negative symptoms are associated with a reduced risk of suicidality, whilst positive symptoms are associated with an increased risk of suicidality. Depressive symptoms may confound or mediate these associations.

Patient Journey of Veterans with Schizophrenia: An Analysis of Treatment Patterns, Healthcare Resource Utilization and Costs. Adv Ther 2022; 39:1199-1214. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Little is known about the burden of schizophrenia among United States veterans early after diagnosis. This retrospective study describes treatment patterns, healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and healthcare costs among veterans with a recent schizophrenia diagnosis. METHODS Adults with a schizophrenia diagnosis recorded between 1 April 2014 and 31 December 2017 and no history of schizophrenia over the preceding 12 months were identified from a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) database. Continuous enrollment in the VHA was required for ≥ 12 months before and after the index date when the first schizophrenia diagnosis code was identified. Baseline characteristics and follow-up treatment patterns, HRU and costs were examined descriptively. RESULTS The study population (20,389 patients) had a high baseline mental health comorbidity burden. Despite a schizophrenia diagnosis, 32.1% of patients received no antipsychotic medication during the follow-up period. Among those with ≥ 1 antipsychotic prescription fill, 64.0% received ≥ 1 oral antipsychotic (OAP) therapy and 11.6% received ≥ 1 long-acting injectable (LAI). A delay was observed between diagnosis and treatment for both OAPs (39.0 ± 67.2 days) and LAIs (69.4 ± 96.2 days). Adherence to therapy (defined as proportion of days covered ≥ 80%) was greater with LAIs (34.5%) vs OAPs (27.3%). Inpatient stays were reported for 33.8% of patients during the 12-month follow-up period, and 5.5% of patients had readmissions. All-cause inpatient stay costs with 12-month follow-up equaled $7999 per patient per year. CONCLUSIONS These data indicate that pharmacotherapy after a recent diagnosis of schizophrenia in the VHA system is suboptimal, and that these patients face a considerable burden in terms of hospitalization, other HRU, and healthcare costs.

Abstract
Depressive symptoms are frequent clinical manifestations in patients with schizophrenia. Decreased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been shown to be involved in the development of depressive symptoms. However, the detailed molecular mechanism of BDNF in the depressive symptoms of schizophrenia patients remains to be fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the role of BDNF in the depressive symptoms in drug-naïve first-episode (DNFE) patients with schizophrenia and whether BDNF levels were associated with the improvement of depressive symptoms after olanzapine treatment. 50 DNFE schizophrenia patients and 55 healthy controls were recruited, and their serum BDNF levels were compared. All patients were treated with olanzapine monotherapy for 12 weeks, and 45 patients completed the trial. The serum BDNF levels and depressive symptoms were measured again at follow-up. We found that DNFE patients had lower BDNF levels, compared to controls. Last observation carried forward (LOCF) analysis was used for patients who dropped out after the second month, and 50 patients were included in the statistical analysis with LOCF. After 12 weeks of treatment with olanzapine, BDNF levels were significantly increased and depressive symptoms were significantly decreased. Correlation analysis showed that the change of BDNF levels after treatment was correlated with the change of HAMD total score from baseline. Further regression analysis showed that the change in BDNF levels was an independent predictor for the improvement in depressive symptoms, after controlling age, BMI change and the decrease of PANSS total score. However, the baseline BDNF levels were not associated with an improvement in depressive symptoms in patients. Our findings reveal that olanzapine treatment can increase BDNF levels and improve depressive symptoms in schizophrenia patients. Moreover, the changes in serum BDNF levels were related to the improvement in depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Suicide is currently among the leading causes of death among individuals with schizophrenia. Reducing mortality from suicide remains a major clinical challenge in the care of veterans with schizophrenia. There is a need to increase our understanding of what elevates suicide risk in veterans with schizophrenia as a first step towards the future development of suicide prevention interventions. This study compared demographic and clinical features of military veterans with schizophrenia with vs. without suicidality to determine specific risk factors for suicidality. The sample consisted of two groups of veterans with schizophrenia: suicide ideators and/or attempters (SIA) and individuals without a history of suicidal ideation or attempts (no-SIA). Participants were interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Axis I disorders (SCID-I), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for Schizophrenia (PANSS), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), and Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ). In bivariate analyses, the PANSS-Positive Symptom scores, PANSS-General Psychopathology scores, HDRS total score, HDRS-Paranoid symptoms item score, and SPQ total scores were higher among SIA compared with no-SIA patients. In this unique clinical sample of veterans with schizophrenia, SIA patients were more likely to have mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and/or alcohol use disorder in comparison to the no-SIA group. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the HDRS total score and presence/absence of comorbid mood disorder drive the difference between the groups. These results indicate that suicide risk assessment in veterans with schizophrenia should include identifying individuals with comorbid mood disorders/symptoms, PTSD, alcohol use disorder, marked positive symptoms, and schizotypal features.

Abstract
AIM Suicidal thoughts and behaviours are prevalent in individuals with schizophrenia. However, research examining the prevalence and predictors of suicidality and self-harm in participants at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P) is limited and mostly focuses on help-seeking participants recruited through clinical pathways. The current study sought to assess the prevalence of suicidality and self-harm and identify predictors of current suicidal ideation in community-recruited CHR-P participants. METHODS Data were available for 130 CHR-P participants, 15 participants with first-episode psychosis (FEP), 47 participants not fulfilling CHR-P criteria (CHR-Ns) and 53 healthy controls. Current and lifetime suicidality and self-harm were assessed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States (CAARMS). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine predictors of current suicidal ideation in the CHR-P group. RESULTS A considerable proportion of CHR-P participants disclosed current suicidal ideation (34.6%). Overall, FEP individuals were at greatest risk, with considerably high prevalence rates for current suicidal ideation (73.3%), lifetime self-harm behaviour (60.0%) and lifetime suicide attempt (60.0%). In the CHR-P sample, current suicidal ideation was predicted by lifetime suicide attempts, lower CAARMS severity, impaired social functioning and greater comorbidity. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that suicidality and self-harm are highly prevalent in community-recruited CHR-P and FEP individuals. Accordingly, these results highlight the importance of further research into the determinants of suicidality and self-harm during at-risk and early stages of psychosis, and the implementation of intervention strategies to reduce adverse outcomes in these populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicide is a major but preventable public health problem in the world. Mental disorders are related to suicide, and can predict suicidal ideation (SI). This study aims to compare the differences in the prevalence and risk factors of SI among patients with five types of mental disorders. METHODS This study involved adult inpatients with five types of mental disorders in Beijing Anding Hospital. Text mining was used to extract information from the electronic medical records. We performed the Pearson's Chi-square analysis and multivariable unconditional logistic regression to filter factors to assess odds of SI for each type of mental disorders. RESULTS Of the 21,287 participants included, 2,619 had experienced SI. For both sexes, the highest risk of SI was found for patients with recurrent depressive disorder (OR = 7.096; P <.001), followed by patients with depressive episode and bipolar affective disorder when comparing with those with substance use disorder. Gender, age, occupation, drinking, single child, personal relationship, family history of mental disorder, family history of suicide and psychological trauma were associated with SI after adjusting for confounding factors, but the risk factors and their effects in each type were different. LIMITATIONS The clear causal associations between mental disorders and SI cannot be elucidated. In addition, the ability to study the predictors of SI is constrained by the fact that the sample excluded people who completed suicide. CONCLUSIONS SI is common and distinct strategies should be taken in suicide prevention for patients with different types of mental disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Personalization of psychiatric treatment includes treatment of symptoms, cognition and functional deficits, suicide, and medical co-morbidities. VA Collaborative Study 572 examined a large sample of male and female veterans with schizophrenia (n=3,942) and with bipolar disorder (n=5,414) with phenotyping and genomic analyses. We present the results to date and future directions. METHODS All veterans received a structured diagnostic interview and assessments of suicidal ideation and behavior, PTSD, and health. Veterans with schizophrenia were assessed for negative symptoms and lifetime depression. All were assessed with a cognitive and functional capacity assessment. Data for genome wide association studies were collected. Controls came from the VA Million Veteran Program. RESULTS Suicidal ideation or behavior was present in 66%. Cognitive and functional deficits were consistent with previous studies. 40% of the veterans with schizophrenia had a lifetime major depressive episode and PTSD was present in over 30%. Polygenic risk score (PRS) analyses indicated that cognitive and functional deficits overlapped with PRS for cognition, education, and intelligence in the general population and PRS for suicidal ideation and behavior correlated with previous PRS for depression and suicidal ideation and behavior, as did the PRS for PTSD. DISCUSSION Results to date provide directions for personalization of treatment in SMI, veterans with SMI, and veterans in general. The results of the genomic analyses suggest that cognitive deficits in SMI may be associated with general population features. Upcoming genomic analyses will reexamine the issues above, as well as genomic factors associated with smoking, substance abuse, negative symptoms, and treatment response.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Disability is common in bipolar disorder (BD) and predicted by persistent sadness. We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine daily activities in people with BD and schizophrenia. We classified activities as productive, unproductive, or passive recreation, relating them to momentary sadness, location, and social context. METHODS 71 people with BD and 102 people with schizophrenia were sampled 3 times/day for 30 days with an EMA survey. Each survey asked where they were, with whom, what they were doing, and if they were sad. RESULTS People with BD were home more than 50% of the time. There were no differences in prevalence of activity types across diagnoses. People with BD were less likely to report only one activity since the prior survey, but the most surveys still reported only one. For both groups, sadness and being home and alone since the last survey was associated with less productive activity and more passive recreation. CONCLUSIONS Participants with BD and schizophrenia manifested high levels of unproductive and passive activities, predicted by momentary sadness. These activity patterns are consistent with descriptions of avolition and they minimally differentiated people with BD and schizophrenia. Previous reports of negative symptoms in BD may have been identifying these behaviors.

Abstract
Background Schizophrenia is considered to occur due to both environmental and genetic factors. Depressive symptoms and apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene polymorphisms are involved in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. However, the effect of APOE gene polymorphism on depressive symptoms has never been investigated among Chinese elderly schizophrenia patients. Objective This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the effect of APOE gene polymorphism on blood lipid metabolism and depressive symptoms among elderly schizophrenia patients. Method A total of 301 elderly schizophrenia patients (161 males, age ranges from 60 to 92 years, with an average age of 67.31 ± 6.667) were included in the study. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). APOE gene polymorphisms were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Correlations between GDS and serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels with APOE genotypes were assessed. Results The concentration of LDL in the APOE E2 group was significantly lower than those in the APOE E3 and APOE E4 groups, and the GDS scores in the APOE E2 and APOE E3 groups were higher than those in the APOE E4 group. Using partial correlation analysis and controlling the duration of disease and hyperlipidemia, we found that GDS scores were significantly correlated with LDL (r = −0.179, p = 0.025). Conclusions The APOE E2 genotype is associated with more depressive symptoms and lower serum LDL in elderly Chinese schizophrenia patients, and there is a negative correlation between depressive symptoms and LDL.

Abstract
The current study aims to compare the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) between patients with schizophrenia and non-psychiatric control group, and to analyze the association of having suffered multiple ACEs with clinical symptoms of schizophrenia and suicidal behavior. A multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted across three facilities in Buenos Aires, Argentina. One-hundred patients with schizophrenia and 50 healthy subjects were assessed with the Adverse Childhood Experiences questionnaire (ACE-Q), the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). We observed that the prevalence of at least one ACE in schizophrenic patients was almost double in comparison with the non-psychiatric control group. Multiple ACEs were associated with persistent auditory hallucinations and lower negative symptoms in both sexes. Higher frequency of death ideation and a higher number of suicide attempts were reported among women. The strength of this study is the possibility of comparing the presence of ACEs between schizophrenic patients and non-psychiatric control using the same questionnaire in an under-reported sample of low socio-economic patients assisted in public hospitals. A limitation is that the history of ACEs relied on the retrospective assessment of childhood experiences, and adults could over-report ACEs because of recall bias.

Abstract
It has been reported that decision making is impaired in suicide attempters. Decision making is a complex process and little is known about its different components. Yet, this information would help to understand the functioning of suicidal minds. In this study, the Prospect Valence-Learning (PVL) computational model was applied to the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) to investigate and compare decision-making components in patients with affective disorder and with/without history of suicide attempts and in healthy controls. To this aim, 116 inpatients with current major depressive episode (among whom 62 suicide attempters) and 38 healthy controls were recruited. Decision-making performance was measured using the IGT. The Bayesian computational PVL model was applied to compare the feedback sensitivity, loss aversion, learning/memory, and choice consistency components of decision making in the different groups. Depressive symptomatology was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory short form (BDI-SF). The total IGT net score and the loss aversion and learning/memory scores were lower in suicide attempters than in healthy controls. The choice consistency score was low in all patients (with/without suicide history) compared with healthy controls. Moreover, patients with high BDI score showed a positive relationship between the choice consistency score and suicide attempt. These findings suggest that decision-making impairment in depressed patients with and without suicidal history might be the result of underlying problems in feedback processing and task learning, which influence the building of long-term strategies. All these impairments should be targeted in therapeutic strategies for suicidal patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We compared male and female American veterans with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder regarding clinical characteristics associated with lifetime suicidal ideation and behavior. Subsequent mortality, including death by suicide, was also assessed. METHODS Data from questionnaires and face-to-face evaluations were collected during 2011-2014 from 8,049 male and 1,290 female veterans with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. In addition to comparing male-female characteristics, Cox regression models-adjusted for demographic information, medical-psychiatric comorbidities, and self-reported suicidal ideation and behavior-were used to examine gender differences in associations of putative risk factors with suicide-specific and all-cause mortality during up to six years of follow-up. RESULTS Women overall were younger, more likely to report a history of suicidal behavior, less likely to be substance abusers, and had lower overall mortality during follow-up. Among women only, psychiatric comorbidity was paradoxically associated with lower all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR]=0.53, 95% CI, 0.29-0.96, p = 0.037 for 1 disorder vs. none; HR=0.44, 95% CI, 0.25-0.77, p = 0.004 for ≥2 disorders vs. none). Suicide-specific mortality involved relatively few events, but crude rates were an order of magnitude higher than in the U.S. general and overall veteran populations. LIMITATIONS Incomplete cause-of-death information and low statistical power for male-female comparisons regarding mortality. CONCLUSIONS Female veterans with SMI differed from females in the general population by having a higher risk of suicide attempts. They also had more lifetime suicide attempts than male veterans with same diagnoses. These differences should inform public policy and clinical planning.

Abstract
The aims of the present study were to investigate the dimensions of childhood trauma (CT) in patients with schizophrenia, and to predict suicidal risk (e.g., current suicidal ideation and lifetime suicide attempts) by CT dimensions and clinical factors (positive and negative symptoms and depression). Eighty-two inpatients with schizophrenia completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI); they were also administered the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).The presence of lifetime suicide attempts was assessed by structured diagnostic clinical interview. Patients with lifetime suicide attempts scored higher on sexual abuse than those without attempts after controlling for depression severity. Patients with high suicidal risk had higher scores on physical neglect than those without high risk after controlling for depression severity. Patients with high CT had higher scores on negative and positive symptoms, current suicidal ideation, and depression than those with low CT. Logistic regression analyses indicated that sexual abuse was a unique predictor of lifetime suicide attempts, and that physical neglect and depression were unique predictors of current suicidal ideation. These findings indicate that patients with schizophrenia who have experienced CT may be at increased risk for suicide.

Abstract
The present study aimed to assess the associations of early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and clinical factors (hypomanic/manic and depressive symptoms) with suicidal risk (current suicidal ideation and lifetime suicide attempts) in inpatients with bipolar disorder (BD). One hundred inpatients with BD completed the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF), the Bipolar Depression Rating Scale (BDRS), the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI). 59% of patients had lifetime suicide attempts and 59% showed high suicidal risk (BSSI ≥ 6). BD patients with lifetime suicide attempts had higher scores on the entitlement and social isolation schemas, depression, and hypomanic/manic symptoms than those without such attempts. Patients with high suicidal risk had higher levels of depressive and hypomanic/manic symptoms as well as some EMSs than those without high suicidal risk. Logistic regression analyses revealed that hypomanic/manic symptoms as well as the entitlement and defectiveness schemas were significantly associated with current suicidal ideation. Also, the entitlement and social isolation schemas were associated with lifetime suicide attempts. These results suggest that the entitlement, social isolation, and defectiveness schemas may relate to suicidal risk in patients with BD.

Abstract
Despite recent research acknowledging social cognition as an important feature of interpersonal functioning in schizophrenia, little work has evaluated the role of social cognition in suicidal ideation and behavior in psychosis. In a short-term longitudinal study, we evaluated the association between concurrent and near term suicidal ideation with social cognition, including emotion recognition and related biases (ER-40; BLERT), attribution biases (AIHQ), and evaluations of trustworthiness (trustworthiness task) in a sample of 179 outpatients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Adjusting for severity of positive and general mental health symptoms, greater reactivity to extreme stimuli (trustworthiness measure), BLERT negative affect accuracy, and AIHQ Blame Scores were associated with suicidal ideation at baseline. AIHQ Blame Scores also longitudinally predicted the presence of ideation 2 weeks later and were highest among participants with ideation across the two time points. The present findings provide support that biased interpretations, and, concurrently with ideation, reactivity and selective accuracy to negative stimuli, are associated with suicidal ideation in schizophrenia. Further understanding the role of social cognitive ability and biases on suicidal ideation could contribute to the understanding of social cognition as a treatment target in prevention of suicidal behavior in schizophrenia.
