Multi-component assembly of luminescent rare earth hybrid materials

Three-Dimensional Bimetallic Ammonium K-Eu Nitrate with a Rare (6,6)-Connected Ion Topology Exhibiting Structural Phase Transition and Photoluminescence Properties

A K-Eu bimetallic ammonium metal-nitrate three-dimensional (3D) framework incorporating R-N-methyl-3-hydroxyquinuclidine, (RM3HQ)2KEu(NO3)6 (RM3HQ = R-N-methyl-3-hydroxyquinuclidine, 1), was characterized and reported. Distinguishing from the former hybrid rare-earth double perovskites, 1 adopts a mixed corner- and face-sharing K+/Eu3+-centered polyhedral connectivity to form a 3D inorganic framework, showing a rare (6, 6)-connected ion topology with a 66 framework. Notably, 1 exhibits clear phase transition, and the switchable thermodynamic behavior is confirmed by variable-temperature dielectric measurements and second-harmonic generation response. Moreover, 1 also shows photoluminescence properties. The activator Eu3+ plays a crucial role in this process, leading to a significant narrow emission at 592 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 20.76%. The fluorescence lifetime (FLT) of 1 is 4.32 ms. This finding enriches the bimetallic hybrid system for potential electronic and/or luminescence applications.

Near-Infrared-Responsive Rare Earth Nanoparticles for Optical Imaging and Wireless Phototherapy

Near-infrared (NIR) light is well-suited for the optical imaging and wireless phototherapy of malignant diseases because of its deep tissue penetration, low autofluorescence, weak tissue scattering, and non-invasiveness. Rare earth nanoparticles (RENPs) are promising NIR-responsive materials, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties. The 4f electron subshell of lanthanides, the main group of rare earth elements, has rich energy-level structures. This facilitates broad-spectrum light-to-light conversion and the conversion of light to other forms of energy, such as thermal and chemical energies. In addition, the abundant loadable and modifiable sites on the surface offer favorable conditions for the functional expansion of RENPs. In this review, the authors systematically discuss the main processes and mechanisms underlying the response of RENPs to NIR light and summarize recent advances in their applications in optical imaging, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, photoimmunotherapy, optogenetics, and light-responsive drug release. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for the application of RENPs in optical imaging and wireless phototherapy under NIR activation are considered.

Preparation and application of carbon quantum dot fluorescent probes combined with rare earth ions

Globally, antibiotic abuse, organic contamination, and excessive heavy metal ion pollution pose serious threats to human health. In this case, ratiometric fluorescent probes can eliminate the errors caused by environmental factors and provide more accurate detection results than single-emission intensity nanoprobes. Accordingly, based on the excellent biocompatibility and abundant surface functional groups of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and the properties of large Stokes shifts and narrow emission bands of rare earth ions (RE3+), RE-CQD fluorescent probes have attracted widespread attention. Herein, firstly we review the combination of carbon quantum dots with rare earth ions (rare earth complexes) using various functionalization approaches to improve the defects of rare earth complexes and realize the functionalization of carbon quantum dots and their applications in many fields, such as biology and environmental science. In addition, we classify the methods for the synthesis of RE-CQD hybrids into three groups according to the different binding modes of the RE and CQDs, including doping, covalent grafting, and direct coordination. The excellent properties of these fluorescent probes are also briefly described. Finally, a comprehensive overview of the important applications of RE-CQD fluorescent probes in the fields of public safety sensing, chemical sensing, biomedical sensing, temperature sensing, and pH sensing is presented. In this review, the recent research progress in the field of ratiometric fluorescence sensing based on carbon quantum dots and rare earth ions is summarized and an outlook on the future development of RE-CQD fluorescent probes regarding their construction and potential applications is provided.

Influence of the Anionic Zinc-Adeninate Metal-Organic Framework Structure on the Luminescent Detection of Rare Earth Ions in Aqueous Streams

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical to numerous technologies; however, a combination of increasing demand, environmental concerns, and monopolistic marketplace conditions has spurred interest in boosting the domestic REE production from sources such as coal utilization byproducts. The economic viability of this approach requires rapid, inexpensive, and sensitive analytical techniques capable of characterizing the REE content during resource exploration and downstream REE processing (e.g., analyzing REE separation, concentration, and purification production steps). Luminescence-based sensors are attractive because many REEs may be sensitized to produce element-specific emission. Hence, a single material may simultaneously detect and distinguish multiple REEs. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can sensitize multiple REEs, but their viability has been hindered by sensitivity and selectivity challenges. Understanding how the MOF structure impacts the REE sensing efficacy is critical to the rational design of new sensors. Here, we evaluate the sensing performance of seven different anionic zinc-adeninate MOFs with different organic linkers and/or structures for the visible-emitting REEs Tb, Dy, Sm, and Eu. The choice of a linker determines which REEs are sensitized and significantly influences their sensitivity and selectivity against competing species (here, Fe(II) and HCl). For a given linker, structural changes to the MOF can further fine-tune the performance. The MOFs produce some of the lowest detection limits (sub-10 ppb for Tb) reported for the aqueous sensitization-based REE detection. Importantly, the most selective MOFs demonstrated the ability to sensitize the REE signal at sub-ppm levels in a REE-spiked acid mine drainage matrix, highlighting their potential for use in real-world sensing applications.

Series of Highly Luminescent Macrocyclic Sm(III) Complexes: Functional Group Modifications Together with Luminescence Performances in Solid-State, Solution, and Doped Poly(methylmethacrylate) Film

Here, we report our trials to regulate the luminescence performance of the macrocyclic samarium(III) complex and prepare four excellent luminescent Sm(III) complex-doped poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) composites. Four 23-membered [1 + 1] Schiff-base macrocyclic mononuclear Sm(III) complexes, Sm-2 _a -Sm-2 _d , originating from dialdehydes with different pendant arms and 1,2-bis(2-aminoethoxy)ethane, have been constructed by the template method. Crystal structures reveal that every Sm(III) ion with the coordination geometry of a distorted bicapped square antiprism is capsulated by the macrocyclic cavity environment forming the "lasso-type" protection. Relative photophysical properties of macrocyclic Sm(III) complexes are carefully investigated in solid-state, methanol solution, and doped PMMA film, and all these show characteristic emissions of the Sm(III) ion associated with satisfactory lifetimes and quantum yields in all media, which could be comparable to reported outstanding examples. Especially, the luminescence performance for this type of Sm(III) complex could be regulated in the solid state by the use of different functional groups in the pendant arm while it is not achieved in solution and the doped PMMA composite. High emitting and air-stable plastic materials could be obtained when these Sm(III) complexes are doped in PMMA with 0.1 wt % mixing ratio, and the corresponding maximum lifetime and quantum yield are 61.2 μs and 0.63% in the case of complex Sm-2 _a , respectively. We believe that these highly luminescent "lasso-type" Sm(III) complexes and doped PMMA composites are valuable references in the design of luminescent lanthanide(III) hybrid materials.
