Abstract
OBJECTIVES Anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as cognitive dysfunctions, improve with abstinence in individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUD), but less is known about psychotic features. The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychosis proneness in a sample of individuals with severe AUD and potential changes after alcohol withdrawal. METHOD An observational study was conducted, assessing prospectively Peter's Delusional Inventory scale (PDI); anxiety and depression symptoms by MADRS and cognitive functioning by the MoCA at entry in daycare hospital (D0) and after 30 days (D30). Individuals with schizophrenia, chronic delusional disorder and bipolar disorder were excluded. Wilcoxon tests were used to evaluate the evolution between D0 and D30, and linear regressions were conducted to test the association between delta PDI and the variables that could be potential confounders. RESULTS Forty individuals (72% males) with a mean age of 50 ± 9 years old and AUD evolved for 15 ± 11 years were included. After one month, PDI score decreased significantly (p = .001), and several biological and clinical parameters improved significantly with abstinence or consumption reduction: GGT (p = .003), MoCA (p < .001), MADRS (p = .047). CONCLUSION We observed a decrease in delusional thinking along abstinence and/or consumption reduction. To our knowledge, this is the first research to study psychosis proneness evolution in patients with severe AUD. Replications are required in independent samples with larger sample size.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some individuals may manifest psychotic symptoms that do not fulfill the requisite clinical criteria for a formal diagnosis of psychosis. The assessment of susceptibility to delusions, encompassing both clinical and non-clinical cohorts, frequently makes use of the Peters et al. Delusions Inventory (PDI-40). This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Persian version of Peters et al. Delusions Inventory (PDI-40) in Iranian non-clinical and clinical samples. METHODS The present study employed a cross-sectional, correlational design in 2020. A total of 1402 Iranian participants were recruited for the study, which consisted of three distinct stages. The first stage involved an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) conducted on a non-clinical sample of 512 participants. The second stage comprising different non-clinical sample 764 participants to perform a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). In the third stage, a clinical sample of 126 psychotic patients was compared to a non-clinical sample. All participants completed the PDI-40, the Community Assessment of Psychotic Experiences (CAPE-42), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). The internal structure of PDI-40 was examined through the analysis of its factor structure using LISREL 8.8. RESULTS The EFA analysis unveiled nine components within Persian version of PDI-40. The CFA analysis demonstrated an excellent fit of the nine-factor structure of Persian PDI-40 to the data. The total score exhibited high internal reliability, as indicated by Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.92. Moreover, Persian PDI-40 exhibited satisfactory evidence of convergent validity, as significant correlations were observed between dimensions of PDI-40 and subscales of CAPE-42 and DASS-21. Lastly, findings indicated that psychotic participants scored higher than non-clinical participants in all components of the PDI-40(p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Persian version of the PDI-40 demonstrates strong reliability and validity for assessing delusion proneness in both non-clinical and clinical samples in Iran. The observed distinctions between psychotic and non-clinical participants underscore its potential as a valuable tool for discerning delusion proneness in diverse contexts.

Abstract
PURPOSE We sought to measure the prevalence of psychotic symptoms (PSs) and psychotic disorders (PDs) in a sample of men entering jail and to compare these prevalences with those observed in the general population. We also aimed to explore the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with PSs and PDs. METHODS The Mental Health in the Prison Population (MHPP) survey interviewed 630 incarcerated men upon admission to jail, using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. We looked for associations between sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and the presence of lifetime PSs and PDs in the MHPP and Mental Health in the General Population (MHGP) surveys, which used the same methodology to collect data from the jail and general populations of the same geographical area. RESULTS A higher proportion of PSs without PDs was found in the MHGP group (25.3% vs. 17.8%, p < 0.001), whereas a higher prevalence of PDs was found in the MHPP group (7.0% vs. 2.6%, p < 0.001). The multivariable model indicated that subjects who were single or separated/divorced/widowed and had a history of trauma exposure were at joint risk of PSs and PDs, whereas entering jail was not associated with either PSs or PDs after adjustment for all covariates. CONCLUSION The present study shows that PDs, but not PSs, are more prevalent in men entering jail than in the general population. This overrepresentation could be further explained by the exposure to vulnerability factors found in this population rather than by any specificity related to entering jail.

Abstract
Psychotic experiences (PE), below the threshold of psychotic disorder, are common in the general population. PE are associated with risk behaviors such as suicidality, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and substance use. However, PE as specific or causal phenomena of these risk behaviors are still debated. We aimed to examine the longitudinal trajectories of PE from preadolescence to adolescence and their associated risk behaviors in adolescence. A total of 1138 adolescents from the Copenhagen Child Cohort 2000 were assessed for PE and risk behaviors (NSSI, suicide ideation and -attempts and substance use) at age 11 and 16 years, along with measures of general psychopathology and depressive symptoms specifically. Self-reported impact of general psychopathology tended to be associated with more PE persistence. PE were associated with all risk behaviors in cross section at both follow-ups. Persistent PE from ages 11 to 16 and incident PE at age 16 were associated with risk behaviors at age 16, whereas remitting PE from age 11 to 16 were not. After adjustment for co-occurring depressive symptoms and general psychopathology, all associations were markedly reduced. After exclusion of preadolescents who already had expressed risk behavior at age 11, PE in preadolescence did not stand out as an independent predictor of incident adolescent risk behaviors. The current study suggests that PE in preadolescence and adolescence may not play a direct causal role regarding NSSI, suicidality, and substance use. However, PE are still useful clinical markers of severity of psychopathology and associated risk behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Remarkably little is known about drug use during imprisonment, including whether it represents a continuation of pre-incarceration drug use, or whether prison is also a setting for drug use initiation. This paper aims to describe drug use among people in prison in Norway and investigate risk factors associated with in-prison drug use. METHODS We used data from the Norwegian Offender Mental Health and Addiction (NorMA) Study, a cross-sectional survey of 1499 individuals in Norwegian prisons. Respondents reported on drug use (narcotics and non-prescribed medications) both before and during imprisonment. We used multivariate logistic regression to investigate the associations between drug use in prison and demographics, previous drug use, mental health, and criminal activity. RESULTS Sixty-five percent of respondents reported lifetime drug use, and about 50% reported daily use of drugs during the 6 months before incarceration. Thirty-five percent reported ever using drugs in prison, but initiation of drug used during incarceration was uncommon. In a multivariate model, factors independently associated with drug use in prison included lifetime number of drugs used (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.17; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12-1.23; p < 0.001), daily drug use in the 6 months before imprisonment (aOR = 7.12; 95%CI 3.99-12.70; p < 0.001), and being intoxicated while committing the crime related to current imprisonment (aOR = 2.13; 95%CI 1.13-4.03; p = 0.020). CONCLUSIONS In-prison drug use is independently associated with high-risk drug use before imprisonment. To reduce drug use in prison, correctional services must systematically screen for pre-prison drug use and offer effective drug treatment for those in need.

Abstract
GABA plays a critical role in brain reward pathways via projecting signals from the ventral tegmental area to the nucleus accumbens. Activation of the reward circuitry by abused drugs induces abnormalities of GABA neurotransmission. Recent studies have indicated the involvement of GABAergic genes in the mechanism of drug dependence and its consequences. The aim of this paper is to provide a brief review of association studies of GABA-related genes with drug dependence. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes involved in GABA neurotransmission such as GABA receptor genes (GABR, GABBR), and glutamic acid decarboxylase genes (GAD) are the focus of this review as potential risk factors for drug dependence and its consequence psychosis.

Abstract
Multiple studies provide evidence to support dysfunction of glutamate neurotransmission in the pathogenesis of drug dependence. Pharmacogenetic investigation of glutamate-related genes has provided further support for the involvement of this neurotransmitter in the risk of, and consequences of, drug abuse and dependence. This paper aims to provide a brief review of these association studies. Findings involving single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in glutamate receptor genes (GRIN, GRIA) and glutamate transporter genes (SLC1A, SLC17A) are reviewed as potential risk factors. As yet a clear perspective of the functional consequences and interactions of the various reported findings is lacking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kratom is a traditional medicinal herb widely used in Malaysia and Thailand. Despite its widespread use and statements by regulatory agencies on the potential for kratom-associated psychosis, there is little data regarding the prevalence of psychotic symptoms among kratom users. This study investigated the prevalence of psychosis among kratom users, described psychotic symptomatology and severity, while examining associations between kratom use characteristics and the occurrence of psychotic symptoms. METHODS This cross-sectional clinical survey recruited 150 regular kratom users. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition (DSM-V) diagnostic criteria were used to evaluate psychotic symptomatology among kratom users, and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was used to assess the severity of psychiatric symptoms. Chi-square tests with Yate's correction were performed to determine the association between kratom use characteristics and the occurrence of psychotic symptoms among kratom users in this study. RESULTS Six out of 150 kratom users (4%) presented with any psychotic symptoms. The psychotic symptoms reported were positive symptoms and thought alienation, with a mean BPRS score of 33 (i.e., mild severity). Variables related to kratom use (such as intake of kratom with diphenhydramine, duration of kratom use, and quantity and frequency of daily kratom use) were not associated with the occurrence of psychotic symptoms among kratom users. CONCLUSION Although psychotic symptoms could occur among regular kratom users, they were rare and not significantly associated with kratom use characteristics. We found no evidence of elevated psychosis among regular users.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of psychotic-like experiences (PLE) in general population is moderately high (5%-8%), although the prevalence of psychotic disorder is considerably low (˂1%). Amid the urgency to understand the underlying factors of psychotic disorder and PLE, most research tend to focus on genetic factors. However, numerous recent works suggested increasing importance of non-genetic factors. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of PLE and any psychosocial variables that contribute to any occurrence of PLE among adolescent in Jakarta. METHODS This is a school based cross-sectional study that was carried out in early 2017. A total sample of 623 high school students from five schools in Jakarta were selected by using multistage random sampling. Psychotic experience was measured using Psychotic-Like Experiences Questionnaire. Multiple psychosocial variables proposed as predictor model for PLE were examined using multivariate regression. RESULTS Our final result showed 20.6% prevalence of PLE among high school students in Jakarta. The proposed psychosocial risk model (consisting of violence exposure, parental communication pattern, peer and conduct problems, social comparison, parental attachment, loneliness, and bullying) contributed to explain 16.3% of the occurrence of PLE (R square: .163). DISCUSSION The prevalence of PLE in this population was considerably high. Cultural factors such as paranormal beliefs are assumed to contribute to the high prevalence of PLE among high school students. The quite low contribution score of psychosocial model proposed in predicting the phenomenon of PLE shows that further research is needed to explore more variables that can be better predictors of PLE.

Abstract
Psychotic experiences (PEs), including hallucination- and delusion-like experiences, are robustly associated with self-injurious thoughts and behaviours (SITB) in the general population. However, it remains unclear as to why there is an association. The purpose of this systematic review was to elucidate the role of other factors that influence the association between PEs and SITB and, in doing so, highlight potential mechanisms underlying the relationship. A search of electronic international databases was undertaken, including PubMed, PsycINFO and EMBASE, and eligible studies were grouped according to seven confounder categories: sociodemographics, mental disorders, alcohol and substance use, environmental, psychological, intervention and family history/genetic factors. The systematic search strategy identified 41 publications reporting on 1 39 427 participants from 16 different countries. In the majority of studies, where adjustment for other variables occurred, the association between PEs and SITB persisted, suggesting PEs have an independent role. Common mental disorders, psychological distress and negative environmental exposures explained a substantial amount of the variance and therefore need to be considered as potential underlying mechanisms. There was high variability in the variables adjusted for in these studies, and so the question still remains as to whether the association between PEs and self-harm/suicidality can be attributed (fully or in part) to confounding and mediating factors or directly causal mechanisms. Regardless of causality, the now extensive literature reporting an association between these two clinical phenomena supports the broad usefulness of PEs as an indicator of risk for SITB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neither environmental nor genetic factors are sufficient to predict the transdiagnostic expression of psychosis. Therefore, analysis of gene-environment interactions may be productive. OBJECTIVE A meta-analysis was performed using papers investigating the interaction between cannabis use and catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) polymorphism Val158Met (COMTVal158Met). DATA SOURCES PubMed, Embase, PsychInfo. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA All observational studies assessing the interaction between COMTVal158Met and cannabis with any psychosis or psychotic symptoms measure as an outcome. STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS METHODS A meta-analysis was performed using the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines and forest plots were generated. Thirteen articles met the selection criteria: 7 clinical studies using a case-only design, 3 clinical studies with a dichotomous outcome, and 3 studies analysing a continuous outcome of psychotic symptoms below the threshold of psychotic disorder. The three study types were analysed separately. Validity of the included studies was assessed using "A Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool: for Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions". RESULTS For case-only studies, a significant interaction was found between cannabis use and COMTVal158Met, with an OR of 1.45 (95% Confidence Interval = 1.05-2.00; Met/Met as the risk genotype). However, there was no evidence for interaction in either the studies including dichotomous outcomes (B = -0.51, 95% Confidence Interval -1.72, 0.70) or the studies including continuous outcomes (B = -0.04 95% Confidence Interval -0.16-0.08). LIMITATION A substantial part of the included studies used the case-only design, which has lower validity and tends to overestimate true effects. CONCLUSION The interaction term between cannabis use and COMTVal158Met was only statistically significant in the case-only studies, but not in studies using other clinical or non-clinical psychosis outcomes. Future additional high quality studies might change current perspectives, yet currently evidence for the interaction remains unconvincing.
