Abstract
INTRODUCTION The risk of surgery and postoperative complications increases greatly in frail older patients with sarcopenia. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between myostatin (MSTN) levels and cognitive function and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in older patients undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy and to determine whether MSTN could be used to predict the risk of postoperative complications and cognitive impairment. METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College, China, between January 2023 and June 2023. The risk factors of PPCs and postoperative cognitive impairment were studied using backward stepwise logistic regression analysis. The independent factors were formed into a linear regression equation to construct a risk score model for each patient. The 122 patients who participated in the study were divided into two groups, a low-level group and a high-level group, based on an MSTN level cut-off; the preoperative MSTN cut-off values was 25.55 ng/mL for cognitive dysfunction and 22.29 ng/mL for PPCs. The PPCs and cognitive function of the groups were compared. RESULTS Preoperative MSTN was confirmed as a risk factor for postoperative cognitive dysfunction and PPCs. After surgery, the proportion of patients with cognitive impairment in the high-level group was significantly higher than in the low-level group (P < 0.001). In the high-level group, the incidence of respiratory tract infections was 17.9% higher (P = 0.021), hypoxaemia was 20.5% higher (P = 0.001) and respiratory failure was 14.4% higher (P = 0.012) than in the low-level group. In addition, a high level of MSTN increased the length of hospital stay (P < 0.001) and decreased the Barthel Index score (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The study findings suggest that MSTN could be used as an index to predict complications and cognitive impairment after thoracoscopic lobectomy in older patients with sarcopenia and to provide evidence for reducing postoperative cognitive impairment and PPCs.

Abstract
Background It is well-known that body composition metrics can influence the prognosis of various diseases. This study investigated how body composition metrics predict acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) prognosis, focusing on the ratio of visceral fat area (VFA) to subcutaneous fat area (SFA), SFA to standard body weight (SBW), VFA to SBW, and muscle area (MA) to SBW. These metrics were assessed at the level of the twelfth thoracic vertebra (T12 computed tomography [CT] level) to determine their correlation with the outcomes of ARDS. The goal was to utilize these findings to refine and personalize treatment strategies for ARDS. Methods Patients with ARDS admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) of three hospitals from January 2016 to July 2023 were enrolled in this study. Within 24 hours of ARDS onset, we obtained chest CT scans to measure subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, and muscle area at the T12 level. We then compared these ratios between survivors and non-survivors. Logistic regression was employed to identify prognostic risk factors. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was utilized to determine the optimal cutoff for predictors of in-hospital mortality. Based on this cutoff, patients with ARDS were stratified. To reduce confounding factors, 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was applied. We conducted analyses of clinical feature and prognostic differences pre- and post-PSM between the stratified groups. Additionally, Kaplan-Meier survival curves were generated to compare the survival outcomes of these groups. Results Of 258 patients with ARDS, 150 survived and 108 did not. Non-survivors had a higher VFA/SFA ratio (P <0.001) and lower SFA/SBW and MA/SBW ratios (both P <0.001). Key risk factors were high VFA/SFA ratio (OR=2.081; P=0.008), age, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II score, and lactate levels, while MA/SBW and albumin were protective. Patients with a VFA/SFA ratio ≥0.73 were associated with increased mortality, while those with an MA/SBW ratio >1.55 cm²/kg had lower mortality, both pre- and post-PSM (P=0.001 and P <0.001, respectively). Among 170 patients with pulmonary-origin ARDS, 87 survived and 83 did not. The non-survivor group showed a higher VFA/SFA ratio (P <0.001) and lower SFA/SBW and MA/SBW (P=0.003, P <0.001, respectively). Similar risk and protective factors were observed in this cohort. For VFA/SFA, a value above the cutoff of 1.01 predicted higher mortality, while an MA/SBW value below the cutoff of 1.48 cm²/kg was associated with increased mortality (both P <0.001 pre-/post-PSM). Conclusions Among all patients with ARDS, the VFA to SFA ratio, MA to SBW ratio at the T12 level, age, APACHE II score, and lactate levels emerged as independent risk factors for mortality.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia, common in the elderly, often linked to chronic diseases, correlates with inflammation.The association between SII and mortality in sarcopenia patients is underexplored, this study investigates this relationship in a U.S. adult cohort. Methods We analyzed 1999-2018 NHANES data, focusing on 2,974 adults with sarcopenia. Mortality outcomes were determined by linking to National Death Index (NDI) records up to December 31, 2019. Using a weighted sampling design, participants were grouped into three groups by the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII). We used Cox regression models, adjusting for demographic and clinical variables, to explore SII's association with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in sarcopenia, performing sensitivity analyses for robustness. Results Over a median follow-up of 9.2 years, 829 deaths occurred. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed significant survival differences across SII groups. The highest SII group showed higher hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause and cause-specific mortality in both crude and adjusted models. The highest SII group had a higher HR for all-cause(1.57, 1.25-1.98), cardiovascular(1.61, 1.00-2.58), cancer(2.13, 1.32-3.44), and respiratory disease mortality(3.21, 1.66-6.19) in fully adjusted models. Subgroup analyses revealed SII's association with all-cause mortality across various demographics, including age, gender, and presence of diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Sensitivity analyses, excluding participants with cardiovascular diseases, those who died within two years of follow-up, or those under 45 years of age, largely reflected these results, with the highest SII group consistently demonstrating higher HRs for all types of mortality in both unadjusted and adjusted models. Conclusion Our study is the first to demonstrate a significant relationship between SII and increased mortality risks in a sarcopenia population.

Abstract
AIMS Many recent studies related to cancer surgery have reported that sarcopenia influences mortality in surgical patients. However, few comprehensive studies have examined the associations between sarcopenia and short- and long-term surgical outcomes of metastatic cancer, especially breast cancer with brain metastasis. In the present study, we investigated the association between sarcopenia and mortality in patients who underwent gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for brain metastasis with breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study analysed 157 patients who underwent GKRS for brain metastasis with breast cancer between January 2014 and December 2018. A Cox regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the association between sarcopenia and mortality at 90 days, 180 days, 1 year, 3 years and the overall period. RESULTS In the Cox regression analysis, sarcopenia was significantly associated with high 90-day mortality (adjusted hazard ratio 3.46, 95% confidence interval 1.24-9.67, P = 0.018), 180-day mortality (adjusted hazard ratio 2.67, 95% confidence interval 1.37-5.22, P = 0.004), 1-year mortality (adjusted hazard ratio 2.39, 95% confidence interval 1.42-4.02, P = 0.001), 3-year mortality (adjusted hazard ratio 2.39, 95% confidence interval 1.53-3.74, P < 0.001) and overall mortality (adjusted hazard ratio 2.11, 95% confidence interval 1.37-3.26, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Sarcopenia could be a risk factor for short- and long-term mortality in patients undergoing GKRS for brain metastasis from breast cancer.

Abstract
This study will address the prevalence of pre-therapeutic sarcopenia (PS) and its clinical impact during cancer treatment among adult cancer patients ≥ 18 years of age. A meta-analysis (MA) with random-effect models was performed via a MEDLINE systematic review, according to the PRISMA statement, focusing on articles published before February 2022 that reported observational studies and clinical trials on the prevalence of PS and the following outcomes: overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), post-operative complications (POC), toxicities (TOX), and nosocomial infections (NI). A total of 65,936 patients (mean age: 45.7-85 y) with various cancer sites and extensions and various treatment modes were included. Mainly defined by CT scan-based loss of muscle mass only, the pooled prevalence of PS was 38.0%. The pooled relative risks were 1.97, 1.76, 2.70, 1.47, and 1.76 for OS, PFS, POC, TOX, and NI, respectively (moderate-to-high heterogeneity, I2: 58-85%). Consensus-based algorithm definitions of sarcopenia, integrating low muscle mass and low levels of muscular strength and/or physical performance, lowered the prevalence (22%) and heterogeneity (I2 < 50%). They also increased the predictive values with RRs ranging from 2.31 (OS) to 3.52 (POC). PS among cancer patients is prevalent and strongly associated with poor outcomes during cancer treatment, especially when considering a consensus-based algorithm approach.

Assessment of Functional and Nutritional Status and Skeletal Muscle Mass for the Prognosis of Critically Ill Solid Cancer Patients. Cancers (Basel) 2022; 14:cancers14235870. Abstract
Simple and accessible prognostic factors are paramount for solid cancer patients experiencing life-threatening complications. The aim of this study is to appraise the impact of functional and nutritional status and skeletal muscle mass in this population. We conducted a retrospective (2007−2020) single-center study by enrolling adult patients with solid cancers requiring unplanned ICU admission. Performance status, body weight, and albumin level were collected at ICU admission and over six months. Skeletal muscle mass was assessed at ICU admission by measuring muscle areas normalized by height (SMI). Four-hundred and sixty-two patients were analyzed, mainly with gastro-intestinal (34.8%) and lung (29.9%) neoplasms. Moreover, 92.8% of men and 67.3% of women were deemed cachectic. In the multivariate analysis, performance status at ICU admission (CSH 1.74 [1.27−2.39], p < 0.001) and the six month increase in albumin level (CSH 0.38 [0.16−0.87], p = 0.02) were independent predictors of ICU mortality. In the subgroup of mechanically ventilated patients, the psoas SMI was independently associated with ICU mortality (CSH 0.82 [0.67−0.98], p = 0.04). Among the 368 ICU-survivors, the performance status at ICU admission (CSH 1.34 [1.14−1.59], p < 0.001) and the six-month weight loss (CSH 1.33 [1.17−2.99], p = 0.01) were associated with a one-year mortality rate. Most cancer patients displayed cachexia at ICU admission. Time courses of nutritional parameters may aid the prediction of short- and long-term outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Sarcopenia, defined as the loss of muscle mass and function, is known to cause adverse health outcomes. The purpose of this umbrella review was to integrate published systematic reviews and meta-analyses exploring sarcopenia and lung cancer to provide comprehensive knowledge on their relationship. METHODS Eligible studies were searched from scientific databases until June 28, 2022. Critical appraisal was performed using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2. The impact of sarcopenia on the pathophysiology, prevalence, and prognosis of lung cancer is summarized at the level of systematic reviews or meta-analyses. RESULTS Fourteen reviews and meta-analyses were conducted. The methodological quality was high for one review, low for nine, and critically low for four. The most common standard for diagnosing sarcopenia in the lung cancer population is computed tomography (CT) to measure the skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebra (L3). Sarcopenia was highly prevalent among patients with lung cancer, with a pooled prevalence ranging from 42.8% to 45.0%. The association between sarcopenia and increased postoperative complications and decreased disease control rates with immune checkpoint inhibitors has been demonstrated. Mortality was significantly higher in sarcopenic patients than in non-sarcopenic patients with lung cancer, regardless of the stage of disease or type of treatment. CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenia is a poor prognostic factor for lung cancer. Future studies are necessary to clarify the pathophysiology of sarcopenia and develop effective interventions for sarcopenia in patients with lung cancer.

Abstract
β-Hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), a metabolite of leucine, is known to increase muscle mass and strength. However, the effect of perioperative HMB supplementation in liver surgery is unclear. Moreover, the impact of HMB on the skeletal muscle fiber type also remains unclear. We investigated the impact of HMB on the body composition and skeletal muscle fiber type in sarcopenic rats undergoing major hepatectomy. Nine-week-old male F344/NSlc rats were maintained in hindlimb suspension (HLS) and were forcedly supplemented with HMB calcium salt (HMB-Ca, 0.58 g/kg×2 times) or distilled water in addition to free feeding. After 2 wk of HLS, the rats underwent 70% hepatectomy and were sacrificed 3 d after surgery. Body composition factors and the proportion of slow-twitch fibers in hindlimb muscles were evaluated. HMB maintained the body composition and hindlimb force and acted against their deterioration in sarcopenic rats, exerting a particular effect on lean mass weight, which was significant. In the histological study, HMB significantly increased the proportion of slow-twitch fibers in the soleus (p=0.044) and plantaris (p=0.001) of sarcopenic rats. HMB ameliorated deterioration of the body composition and increased the proportion of slow-twitch fibers in sarcopenic rats undergoing major hepatectomy.

Abstract
Purpose: The effect of sarcopenia on the survival of patients with type 2 diabetes remains unclear. Therefore, we designed a propensity score-matched population-based cohort study to compare the patients with diabetes with or without sarcopenia. Patients and Methods: We included patients with type 2 diabetes and categorized them into two groups according to whether they had sarcopenia and compared their survival; patients in the groups were matched at a ratio of 1:2. Results: The matching process yielded a final cohort of 201,698 patients (132,805 and 68,893 in the sarcopenia and nonsarcopenia diabetes groups, respectively) who were eligible for further analysis. According to both univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs; 95% confidence interval [CI]) of all-cause death for the sarcopenia diabetes group compared with the control group: 1.35 (1.33−1.38; p < 0.001). The aHRs (95% CIs) of all-cause death for those aged 41−50, 51−60, and >60 years (compared with those aged ≤40 years) were 1.53 (1.48−1.60), 2.61 (2.52−2.72), and 6.21 (5.99−6.45), respectively. The aHR (95% CI) of all-cause death for the male patients compared with the female patients was 1.56 (1.54−1.60). The aHRs (95% CIs) of all-cause death for those with adapted Diabetes Complications Severity Index (aDCSI) scores of 1, 2, 3, 4, and ≥5 (compared with an aDCSI score of 0) were 1.01 (1.00−1.14), 1.38 (1.35−1.42), 1.58 (1.54−1.63), and 2.23 (2.14−2.33), respectively. Conclusion: Patients with type 2 diabetes and sarcopenia had higher mortality than did those without sarcopenia.

Abstract
Sarcopenia, also known as muscle decay, is associated with high morbidity among surgical patients. It is highly correlated with adverse clinical outcomes, such as increased postoperative complications, prolonged hospital stay, and increased mortality. Computed tomography (CT) is one of the main methods for diagnosing sarcopenia, which has the advantages of intuitiveness, rapidity, and accuracy. Clinical studies have shown that CT-defined sarcopenia can help predict the clinical outcomes and prognosis of surgical patients and provide an important reference for the formulation of antitumor treatment protocols. In recent years, some scholars have tried to construct an intelligent CT-based diagnostic model, which is expected to improve the diagnostic efficiency and establish standardized diagnostic criteria for CT-defined sarcopenia. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the understanding of the diagnosis of sarcopenia and its potential prognostic value in surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We evaluated the prognostic value of Sarcopenia, low precardial adipose-tissue (PAT), and high tumor-volume in the outcome of surgically-treated pleural mesothelioma (PM). METHODS From 2005 to 2020, consecutive surgically-treated PM-patients having a pre-operative computed tomography (CT) scan were retrospectively included. Sarcopenia was assessed by CT-based parameters measured at the level of the fifth thoracic vertebra (TH5) by excluding fatty-infiltration based on CT-attenuation. The findings were stratified for gender, and a threshold of the 33rd percentile was set to define sarcopenia. Additionally, tumor volume as well as PAT were measured. The findings were correlated with progression-free survival and long-term mortality. RESULTS Two-hundred-seventy-eight PM-patients (252 male; 70.2 ± 9 years) were included. The mean progression-free survival was 18.6 ± 12.2 months, and the mean survival time was 23.3 ± 24 months. Progression was associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (p = <0.001), tumor-stage (p = 0.001), and type of surgery (p = 0.026). Three-year mortality was associated with higher patient age (p = 0.005), presence of COPD (p < 0.001), higher tumor-stage (p = 0.015), and higher tumor-volume (p < 0.001). Kaplan-Meier statistics showed that sarcopenic patients have a higher three-year mortality (p = 0.002). While there was a negative correlation of progression-free survival and mortality with tumor volume (r = 0.281, p = 0.001 and r = -0.240, p < 0.001; respectively), a correlation with PAT could only be shown for epithelioid PM (p = 0.040). CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenia as well as tumor volume are associated with long-term mortality in surgically treated PM-patients. Further, while there was a negative correlation of progression-free survival and mortality with tumor volume, a correlation with PAT could only be shown for epithelioid PM.

Abstract
In this review, we discuss the pathophysiologic and management aspects of acute sarcopenia in relation to SARS-CoV-2 infection. COVID-19 is as a multi-organ infectious disease characterized by a severe inflammatory and highly catabolic status, influencing the deep changes in the body build, especially the amount, structure, and function of skeletal muscles which would amount to acutely developed sarcopenia. Acute sarcopenia may largely impact patients’ in-hospital prognosis as well as the vulnerability to the post-COVID-19 functional and physical deterioration. The individual outcome of the COVID-19 and the degree of muscle mass and functional loss may be influenced by multiple factors, including the patient’s general pre-infection medical and functional condition, especially in older adults. This paper gathers the information about how the SARS-CoV-2 hyper-inflammatory involvement exacerbates the immunosenescence process, enhances the endothelial damage, and due to mitochondrial dysfunction and autophagy, induces myofibrillar breakdown and muscle degradation. The aftermath of these acute and complex immunological SARS-CoV-2-related phenomena, augmented by anosmia, ageusia and altered microbiota may lead to decreased food intake and exacerbated catabolism. Moreover, the imposed physical inactivity, lock-down, quarantine or acute hospitalization with bedrest would intensify the acute sarcopenia process. All these deleterious mechanisms must be swiftly put to a check by a multidisciplinary approach including nutritional support, early physical as well cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation, and psychological support and cognitive training. The proposed holistic and early management of COVID-19 patients appears essential to minimize the disastrous functional outcomes of this disease and allow avoiding the long COVID-19 syndrome.

Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia describes a generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, or function. Determined by measuring the total psoas muscle area (tPMA) on cross-sectional imaging, sarcopenia is an independent marker for poor post-surgical outcomes in adults and children. Children with cancer are at high risk for sarcopenia due to immobility, chemotherapy, and cachexia. We hypothesize that sarcopenic children with neuroblastoma are at higher risk for poor post-operative outcomes. Patients and Methods: Retrospective analysis of children with neuroblastoma ages 1-15 years who were treated at our hospital from 2008 to 2016 with follow-up through March 2021. Psoas muscle area (PMA) was measured from cross-sectional images, using computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans at lumbar disc levels L3-4 and L4-5. tPMA is the sum of the left and right PMA. Z-scores were calculated using age- and gender-specific reference values. Sarcopenia was defined as a tPMA z-score below -2. A correlation of tPMA z-scores and sarcopenia with clinical variables and outcome was performed. Results: One hundred and sixty-four children with workup for neuroblastoma were identified, and 101 children fulfilled inclusion criteria for further analysis, with a mean age of 3.92 years (SD 2.71 years). Mean tPMA z-score at L4-5 was -2.37 (SD 1.02). Correlation of tPMA z-score at L4-5 with weight-for-age z-score was moderate (r = 0.54; 95% CI, 0.38, 0.66). No association between sarcopenia and short-term outcome was observed. Sarcopenia had a sensitivity of 0.82 (95% CI, 0.62-0.93) and a specificity of 0.48 (95% CI 0.36-0.61) in predicting 5-year survival. In a multiple regression analysis, pre-operative sarcopenia, pre-operative chemotherapy in the NB2004 high-risk group, unfavorable tumor histology, and age at diagnosis were associated with 5-year survival after surgery, with hazard ratios of 4.18 (95% CI 1.01-17.26), 2.46 (95% CI 1.02-5.92), 2.39 (95% CI 1.03-5.54), and 1.01 (95% CI 1.00-1.03), respectively. Conclusion: In this study, the majority of children had low tPMA z-scores and sarcopenia was a risk factor for decreased 5-year survival in children with neuroblastoma. Therefore, we suggest measuring the tPMA from pre-surgical cross-sectional imaging as a biomarker for additional risk stratification in children with neuroblastoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) can be assessed by imaging modalities and is associated with several clinically relevant factors in critically ill patients. Our aim was to establish the effect of computed tomography (CT)-defined LSMM on short-term mortality in critically ill patients based on a large patient sample. METHODS The MedLine library and the Cochrane and SCOPUS databases were screened for associations between CT-defined LSMM and short-term mortality in critically ill patients up to May 2021. The primary endpoint of the systematic review was the odds ratio of sarcopenia on mortality. In total, nine studies were selected as suitable for the analysis and included into the present analysis. RESULTS The studies included a total of 1563 critically ill patients with different underlying diagnoses. The pooled overall prevalence of LSMM was 50.9%. The pooled odds ratio for the effect of sarcopenia on short-term mortality was 2.78 (95% confidence interval, 2.05-3.75). CONCLUSIONS CT-defined LSMM is highly prevalent in critically ill patients, has a relevant effect on short-term mortality, and should be included as a relevant prognostic biomarker in clinical routines.

Impact of Sarcopenia on Acute Kidney Injury after Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Surgery: A Propensity Matching Analysis. Nutrients 2021; 13:nu13072212. Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia contributes to increased morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). However, few reports have demonstrated whether sarcopenia would affect the development of postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in these patients. This study aimed to examine whether sarcopenia is associated with AKI and morbidity and mortality after infrarenal AAA operation. Methods: We retrospectively analysed 379 patients who underwent infrarenal AAA surgery. The diagnosis of sarcopenia was performed using the skeletal muscle index, which was calculated from axial computed tomography at the level of L3. The patients were separated into those with sarcopenia (n = 104) and those without sarcopenia (n = 275). We applied multivariable and Cox regression analyses to evaluate the risk factors for AKI and overall mortality. A propensity score matching (PSM) evaluation was done to assess the postoperative results. Results: The incidence of AKI was greater in sarcopenia than non-sarcopenia group before (34.6% vs. 15.3%; p < 0.001) and after the PSM analysis (34.6% vs. 15.4%; p = 0.002). Multivariable analysis revealed sarcopenia to be associated with AKI before (p = 0.010) and after PSM (p = 0.016). Sarcopenia was also associated with overall mortality before (p = 0.048) and after PSM (p = 0.032). A Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that overall mortality was elevated patients with sarcopenia before and after PSM than in those without (log-rank test, p < 0.001, p = 0.022). Conclusions: Sarcopenia was associated with increased postoperative AKI incidence and overall mortality among individuals who underwent infrarenal AAA operation.

Abstract
There is no standardization in methods to assess sarcopenia; in particular the prognostic significance of muscular fatty infiltration in lung cancer patients undergoing surgery has not been evaluated so far. We thus performed several computed tomography (CT)-based morphometric measurements of sarcopenia in 238 consecutive non-small cell lung-cancer patients undergoing pneumonectomy from 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2015. Sarcopenia was assessed by the following CT-based parameters: cross-sectional total psoas area (TPA), cross-sectional total muscle area (TMA), and total parietal muscle area (TPMA), defined as TMA without TPA. Measures were performed at the level of the third lumbar vertebra and were obtained for the entire muscle surface, as well as by excluding fatty infiltration based on CT attenuation. Findings were stratified for gender, and a threshold of the 33rd percentile was set to define sarcopenia. Furthermore, we assessed the possibility of being sarcopenic at both the TPA and TPMA level, or not, by taking into account of not fatty infiltration. Five-year survival was 39.1% for the whole population. Lower TPA, TMA, and TPA were associated with lower survival at univariate analysis; taking into account muscular fatty infiltration did not result in more powerful discrimination. Being sarcopenic at both psoas and parietal muscle level had the optimum discriminating power. At the multivariable analysis, being sarcopenic at both psoas and parietal muscles (considering the whole muscle areas, including muscular fat), male sex, increasing age, and tumor stage, as well as Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), were independently associated with worse long-term outcomes. We conclude that sarcopenia is a powerful negative prognostic factor in patients with lung cancer treated by pneumonectomy.
