Abstract
The domestication of plants and animals has resulted in one of the most significant cultural and socio-economical transitions in human history. Domestication of animals, including human-supervised reproduction, largely uncoupled particular animal species from their natural, evolutionary history driven by environmental and ecological factors. The primary motivations for domesticating animals were, and still are, producing food and materials (e.g. meat, eggs, honey or milk products, wool, leather products, jewelry and medication products) to support plowing in agriculture or in transportation (e.g. horse, cattle, camel and llama) and to facilitate human activities (for hunting, rescuing, therapeutic aid, guarding behavior and protecting or just as a companion). In recent years, decoded genetic information from more than 40 domesticated animal species have become available; these studies have identified genes and mutations associated with specific physiological and behavioral traits contributing to the complex genetic background of animal domestication. These breeding-altered genomes provide insights into the regulation of different physiological areas, including information on links between e.g. endocrinology and behavior, with important pathophysiological implications (e.g. for obesity and cancer), extending the interest in domestication well beyond the field. Several genes that have undergone selection during domestication and breeding encode specific G protein-coupled receptors, a class of membrane-spanning receptors involved in the regulation of a number of overarching functions such as reproduction, development, body homeostasis, metabolism, stress responses, cognition, learning and memory. Here we summarize the available literature on variations in G protein-coupled receptors and their ligands and how these have contributed to animal domestication.

Abstract
The domestic pigs have been undergone intense selection pressures for these development of interested traits following domestication and modern breeding. This has altered many traits in most of pig breeds, such as growth rate, body weight, fertility, and immunity. Thus, the objectives of this study were to (1) detect these selection signatures and identify the candidate genes that show evidences of recent artificial selection at the level of whole genome, (2) be beneficial to understand the relationship between genomic structure and phenotypic diversity, and (3) highlight the key roles of these candidate genes in growth and development in the two breeds. The data consisted of total raw number of 345570 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 1200 individuals from the Chinese Landrace pigs (L, n = 600) and Yorkshire pigs (Y, n = 600). Based on these SNPs data, two complementary methods, population differentiation (Fst) and composite likelihood ratio test (CLR), were carried out to detect the selection signatures in this study. A total of 540 potential selection regions (50 kb) which contained 111 candidate genes were detected for Landrace-Yorkshire pair (L-Y) by Fst. In addition, 73 and 125 candidate genes were found for Landrace pigs and Yorkshire pigs by CLR test based on 321 and 628 potential selection regions, respectively. Some candidate genes are associated with important traits and signaling pathways including the ACACA, MECR, COL11A1, GHR, IGF1R, IGF2R, IFNG, and MTOR gene. The ACACA and MECR gene are related to fatty acid biosynthesis. The COL11A1 gene is essential for the development of the normal differentiation. The GHR, IGF1R, and IGF2R gene are significant candidate genes which play major roles in the growth and development in animals. The IFNG gene is associated with some aspects of immune response. The MTOR gene regulates many signaling pathways and signaling transduction pathway.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the relationships of five intragenic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers (protein kinase adenosine monophosphate-activated γ3 subunit [PRKAG3], fatty acid synthase [FASN], calpastatin [CAST], high mobility group AT-hook 1 [HMGA1], and melanocortin-4 receptor [MC4R]) and meat quality traits of Duroc breeding stocks in Korea. A total of 200 purebred Duroc gilts from 8 sires and 40 dams at 4 pig breeding farms from 2010 to 2011 reaching market weight (110 kg) were slaughtered and their carcasses were chilled overnight. Longissimus dorsi muscles were removed from the carcass after 24 h of slaughter and used to determine pork properties including carcass weight, backfat thickness, moisture, intramuscular fat, pH24h, shear force, redness, texture, and fatty acid composition. The PRKAG3, FASN, CAST, and MC4R gene SNPs were significantly associated with the meat quality traits (p<0.003). The meats of PRKAG3 (A 0.024/G 0.976) AA genotype had higher pH, redness and texture than those from PRKAG3 GG genotype. Meats of FASN (C 0.301/A 0.699) AA genotype had higher backfat thickness, texture, stearic acid, oleic acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid than FASN CC genotype. While the carcasses of CAST (A 0.373/G 0.627) AA genotype had thicker backfat, and lower shear force, palmitoleic acid and oleic acid content, they had higher stearic acid content than those from the CAST GG genotype. The MC4R (G 0.208/A 0.792) AA genotype were involved in increasing backfat thickness, carcass weight, moisture and saturated fatty acid content, and decreasing unsaturated fatty acid content in Duroc meat. These results indicated that the five SNP markers tested can be a help to select Duroc breed to improve carcass and meat quality properties in crossbred pigs.

Abstract
The Liangshan pig is a traditional Chinese small-sized breed; it has a relatively long feeding period and low meat production ability but superior meat quality. This study utilized three non-linear growth models (Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and logistic) to fit the growth curve of Liangshan pigs from an unselected, random-bred pig population and estimate the pigs most suitable slaughter weight. The growth development data at 20 time points of 275 Liangshan pigs (from birth to 250 d) were collected. To analyze the relative gene expression related to development, seven slaughter weight phases (50, 58, 66, 74, 82, 90, and 98 kg) (20 pigs per phase) were examined. We found that the Liangshan pig growth curve fit the typical S-curve well and that their growth turning point was 193.4 days at a weight of 62.5 kg, according to the best fit Von Bertalanffy model based on the goodness of fit criteria. Furthermore, we estimated that the most suitable slaughter weight was 62.5 to 74.9 kg based on the growth curve and the relative expression levels of growth-related genes.

Abstract
This study aimed to verify genetic relationships between fatty acid composition (FAC) and genotypes of several genes (FABP3, HMGA1, MC4R, IGF2, and FABP4) using pig breeds. The effects of genetic variations on FAC of the longissimus muscle were statistically significant with additive and dominance effects. The polymorphisms of FABP3 and IGF2 had the largest effects on stearic (C18:0, P=0.009) and γ-linoleic (C18:3n6, P=0.039) acids, respectively, whereas HMGA1 and FABP4 did not show significances. The analysis revealed that MC4R was significantly associated with palmitoleic acid (C16:ln7) and MUFA. Allele frequencies of the genes examined in this analysis were significantly skewed or fixed in the Korean native pig (KNP), whereas the allele frequencies of the crossbreds tended to fall between those of the purebreds except that HMGA1 and FABP4 had approximately the same allele frequencies with Duroc and KNP, respectively. The polymorphisms found in this study could be used as genetic markers in breeding programs to simultaneously change proportions of fatty acids in muscle tissues.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in candidate genes for meat quality using a custom 96-SNP panel (Illumina Vera Code GoldenGate Assay) on 15 traits collected from 400 commercial pigs. Meat quality measurements included muscle pH, color (L*, a* and b*), drip loss, cooking loss, peak shear force and six sensory traits including appearance (outside and inside), tenderness, juiciness, flavor and overall liking as well as carcass weight and probe yield. Thirty-five SNPs with minor allele frequencies > 0.10 remained for the multimarker association using the GLM procedure of sas 9.2. Results showed that 20 SNPs were significantly associated with at least one of the traits with either additive or dominance or both effects (P < 0.05). Among these significant SNPs, five of them in ADIPOQ, FTO, TNF, LEPR and AMPD1 had an effect on more than three traits simultaneously; those in MC4R, CAST, DGAT1 and MYF6 had an effect on two traits, while the others were associated with one trait. The results suggest that these markers could be incorporated into commercial pigs for marker-assisted selection and breeding programs for carcass and meat quality trait improvement.

Abstract
The melanocortin receptor gene family consists of five single-exon members, which are located on autosomes. Three genes (MC2R, MC4R and MC5R) are syntenic in the human, mouse, cattle and dog genomes, while in the pig, the syntenic group comprises MC1R, MC2R and MC5R. Two genes (MC1R and MC4R) have been extensively studied due to their function in melanogenesis (MC1R) and energy control (MC4R). Conservative organisation of these genes in five mammalian species (human, mouse, cattle, pig and dog), in terms of the encoded amino acid sequence, is higher in the case of MC4R compared to MC1R. Polymorphisms of these two genes are responsible or associated with variation of pigmentation (MC1R) and adipose tissue deposition (MC4R). Polymorphic variants in MC1R, causing coat colour variation, were described in humans and domestic mammals (cattle, horse, pig, sheep, dog), as well as farm red and arctic foxes. The MC4R gene is very polymorphic in humans and it is well known that some variants cause monogenic obesity or significantly contribute to the development of polygenic obesity. Such relationships are not so evident in domestic mammals; however, at least one missense substitution (298Asp > Asn) in the porcine MC4R significantly contributes, at least in some breeds, to fat tissue accumulation, feed conversion ratio and daily weight gain. Knowledge on the phenotypic effects of polymorphisms of MC2R, MC3R and MC5R in domestic mammals is scarce, probably due to the small number of reports addressing these genes. Thus, further studies focused on these genes should be undertaken.

Abstract
We evaluated multiple effects of genetic variations of five candidate loci (LEP, LEPR, MC4R, PIK3C3 and VRTN) on four production traits (average daily weight gain (ADG); backfat thickness (BFT); loin eye muscle area (EMA); and intramuscular fat content (IMF)) in a closed nucleus herd of pure Duroc pigs. Polymorphisms in LEPR, MC4R and PIK3C3 had significant single gene effects on ADG and BFT. The additive genetic variance in ADG and BFT (16.99% and 22.51%, respectively) was explained by genetic effects of these three loci. No correlations were observed between the LEP genotype and production traits in this study. Although we detected marginally epistatic interactions between LEPR and PIK3C3 on the eye muscle area, there were no significant epistatic effects on any traits among all loci pairs. These results suggest that LEPR, MC4R, PIK3C3 and VRTN may independently influence growth rate and fat deposition. Furthermore, the statistical models for predicting the breeding values of each trait had the lowest Akaike's information criterion values when considering the effect of the MC4R, LEPR, PIK3C3 and VRTN genotype simultaneously. These results suggest that LEPR, MC4R, PIK3C3 and VRTN are useful markers for accurately predicting breeding values in Duroc pigs.

Abstract
Melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) has an important role in the regulation of energy homeostasis in both mammals and fish. In this study, MC4R was characterized in S. prenanti (Schizothorax prenanti) and designated as SpMC4R. SpMC4R cDNA is composed of 1004 nucleotides with a 978 nucleotide open reading frame encoding a protein of 326 amino acids. The SpMC4R contained predicted regions that were structural features of MCR subtypes of vertebrates. In addition, phylogenetic analyses suggested that S. prenanti MC4R was closely related to fish MC4Rs. The SpMC4R mRNA was detected in embryos at developmental stages. Further, its mRNA was detectable in unfertilized eggs. Using real-time RT-PCR, MC4R is widely expressed, with highest levels of expression in brain and ovary. An experiment was conducted to determine the expression profile of MC4R during short-term and long-term fasting of the brain. The expression level of MC4R in unfed fish was significantly increased at 6, 9 and 24h post-fasting (hpf) and 14days fasting than in fed fish, this suggests that MC4R is conserved peptide that might be involved in the regulation of food intake and other physiological function in S. prenanti.

Abstract
In this study, we characterized the neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA in snakeskin gourami (Trichogaster pectoralis) (TpNPY). TpNPY displayed characteristics typical of previously reported NPYs, and it exhibited a high degree of homology with the NPY proteins of other vertebrates. A phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that TpNPY was closely related to the NPYs found in the acanthomorpha and salmoniformes fish species. TpNPY was found to be ubiquitously expressed in all brain regions when assessed by real-time RT-PCR and in situ hybridization. In addition, a graded expression level of TpNPY was observed in peripheral tissues; for example, a moderate level of TpNPY was found in the gills, liver, kidney, stomach, intestine, spleen and gonads, while a low level of TpNPY was found in the muscle. The change in expression of TpNPY with respect to daily feeding habits was investigated in distinct brain regions, including the telencephalon, mesencephalon, metencephalon, and diencephalon. Fluctuations in the expression level of TpNPY were observed for a 24h post-prandial period. Except for the telencephalon, a reduction in TpNPY expression was found after a meal, while a peak level of TpNPY was observed 1h before the scheduled breakfast. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between TpNPY and TpMC4R in the telencephalon and diencephalon throughout the circadian feeding cycle, which suggests that there is a connection between the function of NPY and the melanocortin system for the regulation of daily feeding. Fish brains were incubated with an MC4R antagonist (i.e., HS024), and the expression of TpNPY and TpMC4R was measured. Interestingly, there was a significant relationship between the expression of TpNPY and TpMC4R under the effects of HS024, which demonstrates that there are interactions between MC4R and NPY, particularly in a hyperphagic state.

Abstract
Phenotypic information about several pig meat quality traits on 334 Large White × Meishan F2 pigs was collected. Effects of the association of the FokI variants in the seventh intron of the skeletal muscle glycogen synthase (GYS1) gene and the PstI variants in the ninth intron of the palmitoyl acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1) gene on the meat quality traits were examined on all pigs. The FokI variants of the GYS1 gene showed significant effects on pH of m. semipinalis capitis (P < 0.05). Linkage analysis indicated that the peak of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) curve was located around this marker for pH, but it did not reach significance (P > 0.05). The results may be due to several reasons such as linkage disequilibrium to the causal mutations, the limited number of animals or balance of another QTL or marker with negative effects. Significant effects of PstI variants of ACOX1 gene were also found on meat colour value and meat marbling score of both m. longissimus dorsi and m. biceps femoris (P < 0.05). Dominant effects for the affected traits at those two loci were significant except for meat marbling score of m. biceps femoris (P < 0.05). The results of this study give us some evidence for the potential of those dominant markers used in the marker-assisted selection of crossbreeding of the Large White pig sire lines and Meishan-derived synthetic dam lines.

Abstract
This study reviews the factors of pig production that impact the quality of dry-cured ham. When processing is standardized, the quality of the final dry-cured product is primarily determined by the quality of the meat before curing (green ham). This has been defined as the aptitude for seasoning and is determined by the green ham weight, adipose tissue quantity and quality, meat physico-chemical properties and the absence of visual defects. Various ante-mortem factors including pig age and weight, genetic type, diet, feeding strategy and slaughter conditions determine green ham properties such as the dynamics of water loss, salt intake and, as a consequence, proteolysis and lipolysis. Muscle conditions (pH, salt concentration, water content and availability, temperature) influence enzymatic activity and development of characteristic texture and flavor. Generally, hams of older and heavier pigs present better seasoning aptitude because of higher adiposity. Adiposity is also positively correlated with fat saturation, which is desired to avoid rancidity and oiliness. The fatty acid profile of tissue lipids can be manipulated by diet composition. Feeding strategy affects tissue accretion and protein turnover, thus directly impacting proteolysis. With respect to the impact of pig genotype on dry-cured ham quality, local breeds are generally considered more suitable for producing quality dry hams; however, the majority of dry-cured hams on the market today are from modern pig breeds raised in conventional systems, providing lean hams. The importance of all these factors of pig production is discussed and synthesized, with an emphasis on the main difficulties encountered in dry-cured ham production.

Abstract
The current study was conducted in a swine breed (Iberian pig) with a genotype that predisposed the pig to obesity. The aim of the study was to determine the morphological, metabolomic and endocrine features of early conceptuses and to elucidate how placental gene expression (related to placentation, angiogenesis and fetal nutrition), maternal hormones and the metabolome affect the fetal environment and fetal growth. Conceptus viability and growth were found to be related to maternal endocrine (plasma progesterone levels) and metabolic features (plasma levels of leptin, cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c and triglycerides). These features were related to the placental expression of the vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and leptin (LEP) genes, the placental efficiency and, thus, the nutrition and the metabolism of the fetus (availability of glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol, as HDL-c). Viability of conceptuses in females with evidence of dyslipidemia (low plasma levels of total cholesterol due to low HDL-c concentration but high levels of triglycerides) was diminished. The availability of nutrients and metabolic substrates to the conceptus was also affected in females with higher fat deposition and evidence of dyslipidemia. In conclusion, the conceptus viability and growth appear to be strongly related to maternal metabolic features and, thus, affected in females with alterations in lipid metabolism.

Abstract
The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) gene codes for a G protein transmembrane receptor playing an important role in energy homeostasis control. In pig a single nucleotide polymorphism c.1426G>A has been identified and associated to average daily gain, feed intake and fatness traits but a lack of agreement on the effects of the gene on carcass traits in different breeds comes out from many studies. In the present study the c.1426G>A polymorphism is analysed in two Italian pig breeds, Large White and Duroc to study the association of the MC4R gene with some carcass traits. The results show that the c.1426G>A polymorphism affects daily gain, feed conversion ratio and ham weight in both breeds, lean cuts in the Italian Duroc and backfat thickness in the Italian Large White. The presence of MC4R mRNA transcript in different porcine tissues was analysed.

Abstract

In addition, phylogenetic analyses showed that TpMC4R were in MC4R orthologues and closely related to piscine MC4Rs. The TpMC4R transcripts were detected in embryos at all developmental stages. Further, its mRNA was detectable in unfertilized eggs, suggesting that TpMC4R could be classified as maternal mRNA. Using real-time RT-PCR, graded expression at each central and peripheral tissue was demonstrated. Localization of TpMC4R expression in the brain was performed by in situ hybridization. An experiment was conducted to determine the expression profile of TpMC4R during daily feeding in each region of the brain. Fish were fed twice a day at 10:00 and 16:00, and the level of TpMC4R expression was analyzed at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00. The expression level of TpMC4R was significantly reduced at 15:00 compared to that at all previous times (9:00, 11:00 and 13:00). Moreover, significantly higher expression levels of TpMC4R were observed at 18- and 24-h fasting periods. The finding of variation in MC4R expression level during daily feeding and fasting period revealed some direct and/or indirect relations of the MC4R expression to circadian feeding rhythm and short-term food deprivation in fish.

Abstract
The association of the porcine Pitx2c gene with meat quality traits was investigated in the present study. A total of eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were found. Allele frequencies of four SNPs were further detected in four commercial breeds and eight Chinese indigenous breeds. Single SNP and meat quality associations were analyzed in a Yorkshire×Meishan F(2) population. The SNPs c.474C>T (P<0.01) and c.636C>T (P<0.05) showed a significant association with meat color (MCV1). The SNPs c.*37G>A and c.*47G>A were significantly associated with drip loss rate (DLR), water holding capacity (WHC) and meat color value (MCV1) consistently (P<0.05). Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis revealed that the adjacent SNPs were in LD. Two major haplotypes were identified, and association analysis between haplotype combinations and meat quality indicated that the presence of two copies of haplotype 1 -CCGG- may improve meat quality.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate possible differences in follicle and oocyte developmental competence after gonadotrophin treatment in sows of obese and lean genotypes. METHODS Follicle dynamics, ovulation rate and oocyte developmental competence to embryo were compared between females, of obese (n = 7) and lean genotypes (n = 10), treated with 1,250 I.U. of eCG and 500 I.U. of hCG. RESULTS The obese genotype showed lower numbers of follicles growing to preovulatory stages (12.4 ± 1.8 vs 18.6 ± 1.0, P < 0.05), of corpora lutea (16.0 ± 0.9 vs 23.5 ± 0.9, P < 0.05), and of recovered oocytes/embryos (8.0 ± 1.3 vs 12.9 ± 0.9, P < 0.05). Thereafter, embryo viability rates also decreased when compared to lean genotypes (62.5 vs 77.6%, P < 0.05). DISCUSSION To our knowledge, this is the first study analyzing the effect of obese genotypes on the ovarian response to exogenous gonadotrophins in a non-rodent animal model, the pig. A lower efficiency of gonadotrophin treatments for stimulation of follicle development and induction of ovulation was observed.

Abstract
MC4R belongs to a seven-transmembrane G-protein-coupled receptor which may regulate body composition and insulin action. Many mutations in the MC4R gene are associated with obesity, energy expenditure and serum triglyceride levels in human and animals. Six mutations in the MC4R gene were identified in our study (-293C>G, -193A>T, -192T>G, -129A>G, -84T>C and 1,069C>G). The -129A>G was significantly associated with live weight (LW) (P < 0.05), Cattle with the genotypes AG and GG had higher LW than genotype AA. The 1,069C>G was significantly associated with LW, carcass weight (CW), backfat thickness and marbling score (MS). Cattle with the genotype GG had higher LW, CW and MS than genotype CC; Cattle with the genotypes GG and CG had higher MS than CC. The results suggested that -129A>G and 1,069C>G SNP of the MC4R gene may be useful as a genetic marker for carcass and meat quality traits in Qinchuan cattle.

Abstract
Melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) is one of five G-protein-coupled receptors binding melanocortins that is implicated in the control of feeding behavior and energy homeostasis. Six cattle populations (n = 594), including four Chinese indigenous breeds, Chinese Holstein, and a meat type breed (Angus), were used to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms in 5'-untranslated region of MC4R gene by means of PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing. Four linked SNPs (g.[-293C>G; -193A>T; -192T>G; -129A>G]) were identified. The g.-293C>G and g.-129A>G could be genotyped with a PCR-RFLP using TaiI in three combined genotypes (AA, AB and BB). The two linked SNPs were associated with body weight and daily gain in Nanyang aged 6 months (P < 0.05), but they had no significant effect on body weight and daily gain in Nanyang aged 24 months (P > 0.05).

Abstract
Solute carrier family 27 (fatty acid transporter), member 4 (SLC27A4) is a fatty acyl-CoA synthetase producing very long chain fatty acid-CoA for lipid metabolic pathways, suggesting that the SLC27A4 gene is a potential candidate gene for traits related to fat deposition in animals. This study was conducted to sequence the genomic region from exon 6 to 12 of porcine SLC27A4 and detect polymorphisms by comparative sequencing. In silico mapping assigned SLC27A4 gene between gene COQ4 (coenzyme Q4 homolog) and URM1 (ubiquitin related modifier 1 homolog) on pig chromosome 1q24-q2.12 where significant QTL affecting backfat depth had previously been identified. Thirty six putative sites of variation were detected, of which 31 polymorphisms including 28 SNPs and 3 indels were located in the intronic region, and 5 in the exonic regions. The g.1777G>A (EU703769) in intron 8 was confirmed by PCR-RFLP using HpaII restriction enzyme and further genotyped in four Chinese native pig breeds (Meishan, Erhualian, Tongcheng and Qingping) and three western meat-type pig breeds (Duroc, Large White and Landrace). Allele G was exclusively present in Tongcheng and Qingping pigs and predominant in the other pig populations analyzed. Significant differences of backfat at rump, body weight at birth and average daily gain on weaning between the AG and GG genotype were observed in Landrace pig population (P < 0.05).

Abstract
Multiple genomic scans have identified QTL for backfat deposition across the porcine genome. The objective of this study was to detect SNP and genomic regions associated with ultrasonic backfat. A total of 74 SNP across 5 chromosomes (SSC 1, 3, 7, 8, and 10) were selected based on their proximity to backfat QTL or to QTL for other traits of interest in the experimental population. Gilts were also genotyped for a SNP thought to influence backfat in the thyroxine-binding globulin gene (TBG) on SSC X. Genotypic data were collected on 298 gilts, divided between the F8 and F10 generations of the US Meat Animal Research Center Meishan resource population (composition, one-quarter Meishan). Backfat depths were recorded by ultrasound from 3 locations along the back at approximately 210 and 235 d of age in the F8 and F10 generations, respectively. Ultrasound measures were averaged for association analyses. Regressors for additive, dominant, and parent-of-origin effects of each SNP were calculated using genotypic probabilities computed by allelic peeling algorithms in GenoProb. The association model included the fixed effects of scan date and TBG genotype, the covariates of weight and SNP regressors, and random additive polygenic effects to account for genetic similarities between animals not explained by known genotypes. Variance components for polygenic effects and error were estimated using MTDFREML. Initially, each SNP was fitted (once with and once without parent-of-origin effects) separately due to potential multi-collinearity between regressions of closely linked markers. To form a final model, all significant SNP across chromosomes were included in a common model and were individually removed in successive iterations based on their significance. Across all analyses, TBG was significant, with an additive effect of approximately 1.2 to 1.6 mm of backfat. Three SNP on SSC3 remained in the final model even though few studies have identified QTL for backfat on this chromosome. Two of these SNP exhibited irregular parent-of-origin effects and may not have been detected in other genome scans. One significant SNP on SSC7 remained in the final, backward-selected model; the estimated effect of this marker was similar in magnitude and direction to previously identified QTL. This SNP can potentially be used to introgress the leaner Meishan allele into commercial swine populations.
