Progress and perspectives in PTFE membrane: Preparation, modification, and applications

Electron irradiation enhanced wear resistance and hardness of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

The surface of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) bulk materials was modified by irradiation at high temperatures using a 1.2 MeV electron beam. The mass wear rate was decreased from 2.5 × 10-6 g N-1 m-1 to 0.08 × 10-6 g N-1 m-1, and the hardness was increased from 33.2 MPa to 93.9 MPa. The yield strength was increased from 12.1 MPa to 25.8 MPa and Young's modulus was enhanced from 101 MPa to 261 MPa. The use of electron beam irradiation on PTFE at high temperature is an effective modification method to significantly improve its wear resistance and hardness, and increase the elastic response range of PTFE. The chemical reaction induced by electron irradiation at high temperature changes the molecular structure of the PTFE bulk material from highly linear to a network, thus improving the surface mechanical properties of PTFE.

Compound Absorption in Polymer Devices Impairs the Translatability of Preclinical Safety Assessments

Organotypic and microphysiological systems (MPS) that can emulate the molecular phenotype and function of human tissues, such as liver, are increasingly used in preclinical drug development. However, despite their improved predictivity, drug development success rates have remained low with most compounds failing in clinical phases despite promising preclinical data. Here, it is tested whether absorption of small molecules to polymers commonly used for MPS fabrication can impact preclinical pharmacological and toxicological assessments and contribute to the high clinical failure rates. To this end, identical devices are fabricated from eight different MPS polymers and absorption of prototypic compounds with different physicochemical properties are analyzed. It is found that overall absorption is primarily driven by compound hydrophobicity and the number of rotatable bonds. However, absorption can differ by >1000-fold between polymers with polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) being most absorptive, whereas polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and thiol-ene epoxy (TEE) absorbed the least. Strikingly, organotypic primary human liver cultures successfully flagged hydrophobic hepatotoxins in lowly absorbing TEE devices at therapeutically relevant concentrations, whereas isogenic cultures in PDMS devices are resistant, resulting in false negative safety signals. Combined, these results can guide the selection of MPS materials and facilitate the development of preclinical assays with improved translatability.

Advanced membrane-based electrode engineering toward efficient and durable water electrolysis and cost-effective seawater electrolysis in membrane electrolyzers

Researchers have been seeking for the most technically-economical water electrolysis technology for entering the next-stage of industrial amplification for large-scale green hydrogen production. Various membrane-based electrolyzers have been developed to improve electric-efficiency, reduce the use of precious metals, enhance stability, and possibly realize direct seawater electrolysis. While electrode engineering is the key to approaching these goals by bridging the gap between catalysts design and electrolyzers development, nevertheless, as an emerging field, has not yet been systematically analyzed. Herein, this review is organized to comprehensively discuss the recent progresses of electrode engineering that have been made toward advanced membrane-based electrolyzers. For the commercialized or near-commercialized membrane electrolyzer technologies, the electrode material design principles are interpreted and the interface engineering that have been put forward to improve catalytic sites utilization and reduce precious metal loading is summarized. Given the pressing issues of electrolyzer cost reduction and efficiency improvement, the electrode structure engineering toward applying precious metal free electrocatalysts is highlighted and sufficient accessible sites within the thick catalyst layers with rational electrode architectures and effective ions/mass transport interfaces are enabled. In addition, this review also discusses the innovative ways as proposed to break the barriers of current membrane electrolyzers, including the adjustments of electrode reaction environment, and the feasible cell-voltage-breakdown strategies for durable direct seawater electrolysis. Hopefully, this review may provide insightful information of membrane-based electrode engineering and inspire the future development of advanced membrane electrolyzer technologies for cost-effective green hydrogen production.

A Comparative Analysis of Pervaporation and Membrane Distillation Techniques for Desalination Utilising the Sweeping Air Methodology with Novel and Economical Pervaporation Membranes

This study used the sweeping air approach to conduct a comparative analysis of pervaporation (PV) and membrane distillation (MD) in the context of desalinating saline/hypersaline water. An experimental setup of the sweeping air arrangement was designed and built at a laboratory size to conduct the research. The desalination process using PV used innovatively designed cellulose acetate (CA) membranes specifically adapted for this purpose. Conversely, in the studies involving MD, hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes were utilised. CA membranes were fabricated in our laboratory using the phase inversion approach. The physicochemical characteristics of the membranes were assessed using many methodologies, including FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle measurement, and water uptake analysis. This facilitated a more comprehensive comprehension of the impact of the alkaline treatment on these features. The variables that were examined included the kind of membrane, the pore size of the PTFE membrane, the composition of the casting solution of CA, the concentration of the feed solution, the temperature of the feed, and the temperature of the condenser cooling water. The morphologies of the membranes were examined using SEM. The study's findings indicated that the use of MD resulted in a greater flow and a remarkable percentage of salt rejection (% SR). Furthermore, it was observed that the flux was positively correlated with the feed temperature, while it exhibited an inverse relationship with the cooling water temperature. Moreover, it was observed that the impact of the pore size of the PTFE membrane on the desalination process was found to be minimal. The most optimal outcomes obtained were 13.35 kg/m2 h with a percentage salt rejection (% SR) of 99.86, and 17.96 kg/m2 h with a % SR of 99.83 at a temperature of 70 °C, while using MD and PV technologies, respectively. Furthermore, both methods demonstrated the capability to desalinate very salty solutions with a salinity level of up to 160 g/L, thereby yielding potable water in a single step.

Leveraging the Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Process to Create Regenerative Biocidal ePTFE Membranes

The utilization of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment for modifying substrate surfaces constitutes an easy and simple approach with a potential for diverse applications. This technique was used to modify the surface of a commercial porous expanded poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (ePTFE) film with either dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) or (trimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate chloride (TMAEMA) monomers, aiming to obtain antibacterial ePTFE. Physicochemical analyses of the membranes revealed that DBD successfully enhanced the surface energy and surface charge of the membranes while maintaining high porosity (>75%) and large pore size (>1.0 μm). Evaluation of the bacteria killing-releasing (K-R) function revealed that both DMAEMA and TMAEMA endowed ePTFE with the ability to kill Escherichia coli bacteria. However, only TMAEMA-grafted ePTFE allowed for the release of dead bacteria from the surface upon washing with sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) saline solution, owing to its cationic charge derived from the quaternary amine. Washing with SHMP disturbed the electrostatic force between the polymer brushes and dead bacteria, which caused the release of the dead bacteria. Lastly, dead-end bacteria filtration showed that the TMAEMA-grafted ePTFE was able to kill 99.78% of the bacteria, while approximately 61.55% of bacteria were killed upon contact. The present findings support the feasibility of using DBD plasma treatment for designing surfaces that target bacteria and aid in the containment of disease-causing pathogens.

Scalable Fabrication of Nacre-Structured Graphene/Polytetrafluoroethylene Films for Outstanding EMI Shielding Under Extreme Environment

In this work, inspired by the great advantage of the unique "brick-mortar" layered structure as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials, a multifunctional flexible graphene nanosheets (GNS)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite film with excellent EMI shielding effects, impressive Joule heating performance, and light-to-heat conversion efficiency is fabricated based on the self-emulsifying process of PTFE. Both PTFE microspheres and nanofibers are employed together for the first time as "sand and cement" to build unique nacre-structured EMI shielding materials. Such configuration can obviously enhance the adhesion of composites and improve their mechanical property for the application under extreme environment. Moreover, the simple and effective repetitive roll pressing method can be used for the scalable production in industrialization. The GNS/PTFE composite film shows a high EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 50.85 dB. Furthermore, it has a high thermal conductivity of 16.54 W (m K)-1 , good flexibility, and recyclable properties. The excellent fire-resistant and hydrophobic properties of GNS/PTFE film also ensure its reliability and safety in practical application. In conclusion, the GNS/PTFE film demonstrates the potential for industrial manufacturing, and outstanding EMI shielding performance with high stability and durability, which has a broad application prospect for electronic devices in practical extreme outdoor environments.

Enhanced Anti-Wetting Methods of Hydrophobic Membrane for Membrane Distillation

Increasing issues of hydrophobic membrane wetting occur in the membrane distillation (MD) process, stimulating the research on enhanced anti-wetting methods for membrane materials. In recent years, surface structural construction (i.e., constructing reentrant-like structures), surface chemical modification (i.e., coating organofluorides), and their combination have significantly improved the anti-wetting properties of the hydrophobic membranes. Besides, these methods change the MD performance (i.e., increased/decreased vapor flux and increased salt rejection). This review first introduces the characterization parameters of wettability and the fundamental principles of membrane surface wetting. Then it summarizes the enhanced anti-wetting methods, the related principles, and most importantly, the anti-wetting properties of the resultant membranes. Next, the MD performance of hydrophobic membranes prepared by different enhanced anti-wetting methods is discussed in desalinating different feeds. Finally, facile and reproducible strategies are aspired for the robust MD membrane in the future.

Double-Layer ePTFE-Reinforced Membrane Electrode Assemblies Prepared by a Reverse Membrane Deposition Process for High-Performance and Durable Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

To promote further commercialization of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, developing a novel preparation method for high-performance and durable membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) is imperative. In this study, we adopt the reverse membrane deposition process and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) reinforcing technology to optimize the interface combination and durability of MEAs simultaneously for the preparation of novel MEAs with double-layer ePTFE reinforcement skeletons (DR-MEA). With the wet-contact between the liquid ionomer solution and porous catalyst layers (CLs), a tight 3D PEM/CL interface is formed in the DR-MEA. Based on this enhanced PEM/CL interface combination, the DR-MEA exhibits a significantly increased electrochemical surface area, reduced interfacial resistance, and improved power performance compared with a conventional MEA (C-MEA) based on a catalyst-coated membrane method. Furthermore, with the reinforcement of double-layer ePTFE skeletons and the support of rigid electrodes for the membranes, the DR-MEA demonstrates less mechanical degradation than the C-MEA after wet/dry cycle test, reflected in lower increase in hydrogen crossover current, interfacial resistance, and charge-transfer resistance and reduced power performance attenuation. With less mechanical degradation, the DR-MEA therefore shows less chemical degradation than the C-MEA after an open-circuit voltage durability test.

Biaxial stretching of polytetrafluoroethylene in industrial scale to fabricate medical ePTFE membrane with node-fibril microstructure

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) is promising in biomedical fields such as covered stents and plastic surgery owing to its excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, ePTFE material prepared by the traditional biaxial stretching process is with thicker middle and thinner sides due to the bowing effect, which poses a major problem in industrial-scale fabrication. To solve this problem, we design an olive-shaped winding roller to provide the middle part of the ePTFE tape with a greater longitudinal stretching amplitude than the two sides, so as to make up for the excessive longitudinal retraction tendency of the middle part when it is transversely stretched. The as-fabricated ePTFE membrane has, as designed, uniform thickness and node-fibril microstructure. In addition, we examine the effects of mass ratio of lubricant to PTFE powder, biaxial stretching ratio and sintering temperature on the performance of the resultant ePTFE membranes. Particularly, the relation between the internal microstructure of the ePTFE membrane and its mechanical properties is revealed. Besides stable mechanical properties, the sintered ePTFE membrane exhibits satisfactory biological properties. We make a series of biological assessments including in vitro hemolysis, coagulation, bacterial reverse mutation and in vivo thrombosis, intracutaneous reactivity test, pyrogen test and subchronic systemic toxicity test; all of the results meet the relevant international standards. The muscle implantation of the sintered ePTFE membrane into rabbits indicates acceptable inflammatory reactions of our sintered ePTFE membrane fabricated on industrial scale. Such a medical-grade raw material with the unique physical form and condensed-state microstructure is expected to afford an inert biomaterial potentially for stent-graft membrane.

A Novel Packaging of the MEMS Gas Sensors Used for Harsh Outdoor and Human Exhale Sampling Applications

Dust or condensed water present in harsh outdoor or high-humidity human breath samples are one of the key sources that cause false detection in Micro Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) gas sensors. This paper proposes a novel packaging mechanism for MEMS gas sensors that utilizes a self-anchoring mechanism to embed a hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filter into the upper cover of the gas sensor packaging. This approach is distinct from the current method of external pasting. The proposed packaging mechanism is successfully demonstrated in this study. The test results indicate that the innovative packaging with the PTFE filter reduced the average response value of the sensor to the humidity range of 75~95% RH by 60.6% compared to the packaging without the PTFE filter. Additionally, the packaging passed the High-Accelerated Temperature and Humidity Stress (HAST) reliability test. With a similar sensing mechanism, the proposed packaging embedded with a PTFE filter can be further employed for the application of exhalation-related, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), breath screening.

Effect of Oxyfluorination of PFA-Coated Metal Mesh with Superhydrophobic Properties on the Filtration Performance of SiO2 Microparticles

Recently, semiconductor wastewater treatment has received much attention due to the emergence of environmental issues. Acid-resistant coatings are essential for metal prefilters used in semiconductor wastewater treatment. Perfluoroalkoxy alkane is mainly used as an acid-resistant coating agent, since PFA has inherent superhydrophobicity, water permeability is lowered. To solve this problem, the surface of the PFA-coated metal mesh was treated via an oxyfluorination method in which an injected mixed gas of fluorine and oxygen reacted with the surface functional groups. Surface analysis, water contact angle measurement, and water permeability tests were performed on the surface-treated PFA-coated mesh. Consequently, the superhydrophobic surface was effectively converted to a hydrophobic surface as the PFA coating layer was surface-modified with C-O-OH functional groups via the oxyfluorination reaction. As a result of using simulation solutions that float silica particles of various sizes, the permeability and particle removal rate of the surface-modified PFA-coated stainless-steel mesh were improved compared to those before surface modification. Therefore, the oxyfluorination treatment used in this study was suitable for improving the filtration performance of SiO2 microparticles in the PFA-coated stainless-steel mesh.

Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene Membranes for Vascular Stent Coating: Manufacturing, Biomedical and Surgical Applications, Innovations and Case Reports

Coated stents are defined as innovative stents surrounded by a thin polymer membrane based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)useful in the treatment of numerous vascular pathologies. Endovascular methodology involves the use of such devices to restore blood flow in small-, medium- and large-calibre arteries, both centrally and peripherally. These membranes cross the stent struts and act as a physical barrier to block the growth of intimal tissue in the lumen, preventing so-called intimal hyperplasia and late stent thrombosis. PTFE for vascular applications is known as expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) and it can be rolled up to form a thin multilayer membrane expandable by 4 to 5 times its original diameter. This membrane plays an important role in initiating the restenotic process because wrapped graft stent could be used as the treatment option for trauma devices during emergency situations and to treat a number of pathological vascular disease. In this review, we will investigate the multidisciplinary techniques used for the production of e-PTFE membranes, the advantages and disadvantages of their use, the innovations and the results in biomedical and surgery field when used to cover graft stents.

The Use of Collagen-Based Materials in Bone Tissue Engineering

Synthetic bone substitute materials (BSMs) are becoming the general trend, replacing autologous grafting for bone tissue engineering (BTE) in orthopedic research and clinical practice. As the main component of bone matrix, collagen type I has played a critical role in the construction of ideal synthetic BSMs for decades. Significant strides have been made in the field of collagen research, including the exploration of various collagen types, structures, and sources, the optimization of preparation techniques, modification technologies, and the manufacture of various collagen-based materials. However, the poor mechanical properties, fast degradation, and lack of osteoconductive activity of collagen-based materials caused inefficient bone replacement and limited their translation into clinical reality. In the area of BTE, so far, attempts have focused on the preparation of collagen-based biomimetic BSMs, along with other inorganic materials and bioactive substances. By reviewing the approved products on the market, this manuscript updates the latest applications of collagen-based materials in bone regeneration and highlights the potential for further development in the field of BTE over the next ten years.

Formation of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) from thermolysis of Teflon model compound

It has been widely postulated that thermal degradation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE; commercially known as Teflon) under the presence of moisture presents a likely source for the formation of the notorious perfluorocarboxylic acids (CF₃(CF₂)_nCO(OH) PFCAs) and perfluorinated aldehydes (CF₃(CF₂)_nCO(F/H). Thus, deployment of objects laden with Teflon at the peak of their thermal stability may contribute to the atmospheric budget of PFCAs. However, the underlying mechanism remains largely speculative. This study reports potential energy surfaces for reactions that govern oxidative transformation of n-C₈F₁₈ (as a model compound of PTFE) into tridecafluoroheptanoyl fluoride and perfluoroheptanoic acid. Central to computed pathways are dissociative addition reactions of water over the carbonyl group and elimination of hydroperoxyl radicals. Facile activation enthalpies are encountered in the involved steps. Our analysis discloses that formation of the building monomer C₂F₄ should be suppressed under thermolysis oxidation conditions at which synthesis of trifluoroacetic acids is preferred. Constructed kinetic model illustrates a near-complete conversion of the PTFE model compound into perfluorocarboxylic acids (CF₃(CF₂)_nCO(OH) and perfluorinated aldehydes. Outcomes from this study should be instrumental in providing a better understanding of the likely contribution of fluoropolymers in the observed environmental loads of perfluorocarboxylic acids.

3D printing titanium dioxide-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (TiO2-ABS) composite membrane for efficient oil/water separation

The oily water treatment is becoming one of the hottest topics due to that increase of offshore oil transportation and the various accident oil leakages. In this study, a functional TiO₂-ABS composite membrane was generated through the three-dimensional (3D) printing strategy for the first time and was conducted to simulated oily water treatment. The TiO₂-ABS composite membrane demonstrated a significant promotion in hydrophilicity and oleophobicity which were evidenced by the water contact angle of 14.8° and the underwater oil contact angle of 144.7°, respectively. The optimal modified membrane had both exceedingly high flux (1.8 × 10⁵ L m^-2·h^-1) and oil rejection rate (99.5%). Moreover, the results of filtration cycles of 10 days and extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory demonstrated that the modified membranes took possession of excellent stability and antifouling property. What was more, the TiO₂-ABS composite membrane revealed over 99% rejection to all five types of oil/water systems. The interestingly experimental results indicated that the prepared membrane possessed a broad development trend and application prospect in the field of oily water treatment.

Wettability Studies of Capillary PTFE Membranes Applied for Membrane Distillation

In the present study, the membrane distillation (MD) process was studied with the use of commercial polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) capillary membranes. For this purpose, both solutions with NaCl concentrations up to 300 g/L and brines contaminated with oil (70-120 mg/L) were used as feeds. The membrane's wetting resistance was tested by conducting long-term experiments for over 3500 h. Using detailed studies, it has been shown that increasing the salt concentration from 35 to 300 g/L resulted in a 50% reduction in the permeate flux. Nevertheless, the membranes retained 100% of the salt rejection after 2000 h of the module's operation. Moreover, it has been found that performing the MD process with brines contaminated with oil (120 mg/L) led to the wetting of some membranes pores, which it turn resulted in an increase in the distillate's conductivity to 450 µS/cm after 700 h running the process. The mechanism of pore wetting by oil droplets adsorbed on the membrane's surface was presented. Finally, the proposed method of membrane cleaning with the use of a solvent allowed restoring the initial MD module's performance. Consequently, both the permeate flux and distillate conductivity were stable during the MD of the feed containing 35 g/L of NaCl over the next 280 h.

New Materials and Phenomena in Membrane Distillation

In recent decades, membrane-based processes have been extensively applied to a wide range of industrial processes, including gas separation, food industry, drug purification, and wastewater treatment. Membrane distillation is a thermally driven separation process, in which only vapour molecules transfer through a microporous hydrophobic membrane. At the operational level, the performance of membrane distillation is negatively affected by wetting and temperature polarization phenomena. In order to overcome these issues, advanced membranes have been developed in recent years. This review, which focuses specifically on membrane distillation presents the basic concepts associated with the mass and heat transfer through hydrophobic membranes, membrane properties, and advances in membrane materials. Photothermal materials for solar-driven membrane distillation applications are also presented and discussed.

Property investigation for high-Performance Polyimides fabricated via compression molding in solid-like state

A compacted body was fabricated by pulverulent polyimide (PI) block copolymers using solid-like state compression molding (SCM) technique. Polymer heated to solid-like state, i.e. the high-elastic non-melting state above the glass transition temperature ( Tg) and well below melting temperature, could achieve plasticity due to dramatic decreases in elastic modulus. Tensile properties were taken as response values, and the results of single-factor experiments indicated that molding temperature was the dominant parameter on mechanical performances, followed by molding pressure and holding time. Within this context, the SCM process possesses a longer processing time window whereas the processing temperature is narrow. The manufacturing defects induced by inappropriate processing conditions also hurt the tribological performance of PIs. Particles in a solid-like state could coalesce tightly only by exerting both high temperature and pressure in the SCM process. Thermoforming mechanism examined by atomic-scale molecular dynamics simulation indicated that non-bonding interaction forces, especially van der Waals forces play a key role in fusing among polymeric particles. This study is devoted to establishing the interdependence of structure-formability-property for high-temperature polymers that are not melt processible.

Fluoropolymer Membranes for Membrane Distillation and Membrane Crystallization

Fluoropolymer membranes are applied in membrane operations such as membrane distillation and membrane crystallization where hydrophobic porous membranes act as a physical barrier separating two phases. Due to their hydrophobic nature, only gaseous molecules are allowed to pass through the membrane and are collected on the permeate side, while the aqueous solution cannot penetrate. However, these two processes suffer problems such as membrane wetting, fouling or scaling. Membrane wetting is a common and undesired phenomenon, which is caused by the loss of hydrophobicity of the porous membrane employed. This greatly affects the mass transfer efficiency and separation efficiency. Simultaneously, membrane fouling occurs, along with membrane wetting and scaling, which greatly reduces the lifespan of the membranes. Therefore, strategies to improve the hydrophobicity of membranes have been widely investigated by researchers. In this direction, hydrophobic fluoropolymer membrane materials are employed more and more for membrane distillation and membrane crystallization thanks to their high chemical and thermal resistance. This paper summarizes different preparation methods of these fluoropolymer membrane, such as non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS), thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS), vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS), etc. Hydrophobic modification methods, including surface coating, surface grafting and blending, etc., are also introduced. Moreover, the research advances on the application of less toxic solvents for preparing these membranes are herein reviewed. This review aims to provide guidance to researchers for their future membrane development in membrane distillation and membrane crystallization, using fluoropolymer materials.

Development and Performance Evaluation of Polytetrafluoroethylene-Membrane-Based Automotive Cabin Air Filter

A high-efficiency, long-life cabin filter unit is required for the effective purification of the air inside a vehicle. However, conventional cabin air filters that utilize electrostatic effects are less efficient and less effective owing to environmental factors. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes exhibit a high porosity and surface-to-surface dust-removal performance, and maintain a stable pressure drop, indicating their good potential as filter materials. Therefore, in this study, the use of PTFE membranes for the fabrication of automobile filters and the filtration performance of the filters were examined. To this end, first, the properties of PTFE membranes mainly used in HEPA air conditioning filters and those of membranes used as vehicle cabin filters were compared. Next, the thickness, weight, stiffness, pore size, and filtration performance characteristics of filter media fabricated by blending melt-blown (MB) nonwoven, PTFE membranes, and supporting nonwoven into a total filtration layer were compared and analyzed. Lastly, the environmental change durability performance of the automobile cabin filter based on PTFE membrane and the results of the test after the installation of the filter in a vehicle were demonstrated.

Barrier Membranes for Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR): A Focus on Recent Advances in Collagen Membranes

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) has become a clinically standard modality for the treatment of localized jawbone defects. Barrier membranes play an important role in this process by preventing soft tissue invasion outgoing from the mucosa and creating an underlying space to support bone growth. Different membrane types provide different biological mechanisms due to their different origins, preparation methods and structures. Among them, collagen membranes have attracted great interest due to their excellent biological properties and desired bone regeneration results to non-absorbable membranes even without a second surgery for removal. This work provides a comparative summary of common barrier membranes used in GBR, focusing on recent advances in collagen membranes and their biological mechanisms. In conclusion, the review article highlights the biological and regenerative properties of currently available barrier membranes with a particular focus on bioresorbable collagen-based materials. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of these biomaterials are highlighted, and possible improvements for future material developments are summarized.

Biocompatible curcumin coupled nanofibrous membrane for pathogens sterilization and isolation

Airborne transmission of pathogens is the most probable cause for the spread of respiratory diseases, which can be intercepted by personal protective equipment such as masks. In this study, an efficient antiviral personal protective filter was fabricated by coupling the biocompatible curcumin (CCM) with nanofibrous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. The CCM extracted from plants was first dissolved in acidified ethanol at a certain pH and temperature to optimize its loading concentration, antiviral activation, and binding forces on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) support to form a pre-filtration layer at the front section of the filter. Ultrathin PTFE membrane was then fabricated on the antibacterial-antiviral PET support (A-A PET) by controllable heating lamination. This functional layer of the filter exhibits good gas permeance (3423.6 m³/(m²·h·kPa)) and ultrafine particles rejection rate (>98.79%). Moreover, the obtained A-A filter exhibit a high antibacterial rate against a variety of bacteria (E. coli, B. subtilis, A. niger, and Penicillium were 99.84%, 99.02%, 93.60%, 95.23%, respectively). Forthwith virucidal (SARS-CoV-2) efficiency of the A-A filter can reach 99.90% for 5 min. The filter shows good stability after 10 heating cycles, demonstrating its reusability.

Self-assembly, alignment, and patterning of metal nanowires

Armed with the merits of one-dimensional nanostructures (flexibility, high aspect ratio, and anisotropy) and metals (high conductivity, plasmonic properties, and catalytic activity), metal nanowires (MNWs) have stood out as a new class of nanomaterials in the last two decades. They are envisaged to expedite significantly and even revolutionize a broad spectrum of applications related to display, sensing, energy, plasmonics, photonics, and catalysis. Compared with disordered MNWs, well-organized MNWs would not only enhance the intrinsic physical and chemical properties, but also create new functions and sophisticated architectures of optoelectronic devices. This paper presents a comprehensive review of assembly strategies of MNWs, including self-assembly for specific structures, alignment for anisotropic constructions, and patterning for precise configurations. The technical processes, underlying mechanisms, performance indicators, and representative applications of these strategies are described and discussed to inspire further innovation in assembly techniques and guide the fabrication of optoelectrical devices. Finally, a perspective on the critical challenges and future opportunities of MNW assembly is provided.

Colloidal nanomaterials for water quality improvement and monitoring

Water is the most important resource for all kind forms of live. It is a vital resource distributed unequally across different regions of the globe, with populations already living with water scarcity, a situation that is spreading due to the impact of climate change. The reversal of this tendency and the mitigation of its disastrous consequences is a global challenge posed to Humanity, with the scientific community assuming a major obligation for providing solutions based on scientific knowledge. This article reviews literature concerning the development of nanomaterials for water purification technologies, including collaborative scientific research carried out in our laboratory (nanoLAB@UA) framed by the general activities carried out at the CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials. Our research carried out in this specific context has been mainly focused on the synthesis and surface chemical modification of nanomaterials, typically of a colloidal nature, as well as on the evaluation of the relevant properties that arise from the envisaged applications of the materials. As such, the research reviewed here has been guided along three thematic lines: 1) magnetic nanosorbents for water treatment technologies, namely by using biocomposites and graphite-like nanoplatelets; 2) nanocomposites for photocatalysis (e.g., TiO2/Fe3O4 and POM supported graphene oxide photocatalysts; photoactive membranes) and 3) nanostructured substrates for contaminant detection using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), namely polymers loaded with Ag/Au colloids and magneto-plasmonic nanostructures. This research is motivated by the firm believe that these nanomaterials have potential for contributing to the solution of environmental problems and, conversely, will not be part of the problem. Therefore, assessment of the impact of nanoengineered materials on eco-systems is important and research in this area has also been developed by collaborative projects involving experts in nanotoxicity. The above topics are reviewed here by presenting a brief conceptual framework together with illustrative case studies, in some cases with original research results, mainly focusing on the chemistry of the nanomaterials investigated for target applications. Finally, near-future developments in this research area are put in perspective, forecasting realistic solutions for the application of colloidal nanoparticles in water cleaning technologies.

Membranes for Oil/Water Separation: A Review

Recent advancements in separation and membrane technologies have shown a great potential in removing oil from wastewaters effectively. In addition, the capabilities have improved to fabricate membranes with tunable properties in terms of their wettability, permeability, antifouling, and mechanical properties that govern the treatment of oily wastewaters. Herein, authors have critically reviewed the literature on membrane technology for oil/water separation with a specific focus on: 1) membrane properties and characterization, 2) development of various materials (e.g., organic, inorganic, and hybrid membranes, and innovative materials), 3) membranes design (e.g., mixed matrix nanocomposite and multilayers), and 4) membrane fabrication techniques and surface modification techniques. The current challenges and future research directions in materials and fabrication techniques for membrane technology applications in oil/water separation are also highlighted. Thus, this review provides helpful guidance toward finding more effective, practical, and scalable solutions to tackle environmental pollution by oils.

Simulation Study on the Screening of Hydrophobic Surface Materials for Pipeline Drag Reduction Based on Adsorption Properties

Hydrophobic surface drag reduction techniques are effective in reducing the frictional resistance of fluids, the adsorption of liquid molecules on hydrophobic surfaces can reflect the resistance to fluid flow through such solid surfaces. Based on molecular simulation technology, we investigate the adsorption characteristics of water molecules on hydrophobic surfaces to achieve rapid screening of hydrophobic materials in fire-fighting water supply systems. The Monte Carlo method was used to simulate the adsorption process of polymers and to analyze the effects of temperature and fixed adsorption quantity. Contact angle tests were also done to verify polymer hydrophobicity. The isothermal adsorption heat, water molecule distribution, and energy distribution were studied by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods. Then, adsorption localization simulations and electrostatic potential distributions were used to predict possible adsorption sites on hydrophobic surfaces and single-molecule chains. Finally, the interaction energy, diffusion coefficient, and free volume were investigated to explain the adsorption mechanism at the molecular level. Simulation results show that, overall, PTFE was more hydrophobic and PES was more hydrophilic and at 298 K, the number of adsorbed water molecules was ranked as follows: PTFE < PVDF < PVC < PMMA < PPS < CSM < BD-HDI < BD-MDI < BD-TDI < PES. Furthermore, PTFE, PVDF, PVC, PES, and PPS have more stable adsorption configurations on the (0 -1 0) surface. According to the findings, hydrogen bonding dominates the interaction between water molecules and hydrophilic polymers, whereas π-π interactions increase water molecules' diffusion resistance in polymers with benzene rings. In addition, PES contains many sulfone groups and ether bonds, which disorganize the chain arrangement to provide more free volume, whereas the water adsorption rate of PTFE is reduced because its molecular chains are less convoluted and more organized.

Thin-Film Composite Membranes with a Carbon Nanotube Interlayer for Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Compared to the traditional chemical-crosslinking-based polymer, the porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate is considered to be an excellent support for the fabrication of thin-film composite (TFC) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes. However, the low surface energy and chemical inertness of PTFE membranes presented major challenges for fabricating a polyamide active layer on its surface via interfacial polymerization (IP). In this study, a triple-layered TFC OSN membrane was fabricated via IP, which consisted of a PA top layer on a carbon nanotube (CNT) interlayer covering the macroporous PTFE substrate. The defect-free formation and cross-linking degree of the PA layer can be improved by controlling the CNT deposition amount to achieve a good OSN performance. This new TFC OSN membrane exhibited a high dye rejection (the rejection of Bright blue B > 97%) and a moderate and stable methanol permeated flux of approximately 8.0 L m−2 h−1 bar−1. Moreover, this TFC OSN membrane also exhibited an excellent solvent resistance to various organic solvents and long-term stability during a continuous OSN process.

Properties and Fabrication of Waterborne Polyurethane Superhydrophobic Conductive Composites with Coupling Agent-Modified Fillers

The addition of abundant fillers to obtain conductive and superhydrophobic waterborne polyurethane (WPU) composites generally results in increased interfaces in the composites, leading to reduced adhesion and poor corrosion resistance. Fillers such as Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were first treated by a coupling agent to reduce the contents of the fillers. Thus, in this work, WPU superhydrophobic conductive composites were prepared using electrostatic spraying (EsS). The polar groups (-OH and -COOH, etc.) on the WPU, PTFE, and MWCNTs were reacted with the coupling agent, making the WPU, PTFE, and MWCNTs become crosslinked together. Thus, the uniformity of the coating was improved and its curing interfaces were reduced, causing enhanced corrosion resistance. The dehydration reaction that occurred between the silane coupling agent and the polar surface of Fe formed -NH2 groups, increasing the adhesion of the coating to the steel substrate and then solving the problems of low adhesion, easy delamination, and exfoliation. With the increased content of the modified fillers, the conductivity and hydrophobic property of the composite were amplified, and its corrosion resistance and adhesion were first strengthened and then declined. The composite with the WPU, PTFE, MWCNTs, and KH-550 at a mass ratio of 7:1.5:0.1:0.032 held excellent properties; its volume resistivity and WCA were 1.5 × 104 Ω·cm and 155°, respectively. Compared with the pure WPU coating, its adhesive and anticorrosive properties were both better. This provides a foundation for the fabrication and application of anticorrosive and conductive waterborne composites.

Microfiltration Membranes for the Removal of Bisphenol A from Aqueous Solution: Adsorption Behavior and Mechanism

This study mainly investigated the adsorption behavior and mechanism of microfiltration membranes (MFMs) with different physiochemical properties (polyamide (PA), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), nitrocellulose (NC), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)) for bisphenol A (BPA). According to the adsorption isotherm and kinetic, the maximum adsorption capacity of these MFMs was PA (161.29 mg/g) > PVDF (80.00 mg/g) > NC (18.02 mg/g) > PTFE (1.56 mg/g), and the adsorption rate was PVDF (K1 = 2.373 h−1) > PA (K1 = 1.739 h−1) > NC (K1 = 1.086 h−1). The site energy distribution analysis showed that PA MFMs had the greatest adsorption sites, followed by PVDF and NC MFMs. The study of the adsorption mechanism suggested that the hydrophilic microdomain and hydrophobic microdomain had a micro-separation for PA and PVDF, which resulted in a higher adsorption capacity of PA and PVDF MFMs. The hydrophilic microdomain providing hydrogen bonding sites and the hydrophobic microdomain providing hydrophobic interaction, play a synergetic role in improving the BPA adsorption. Due to the hydrogen bonding force being greater than the hydrophobic force, more hydrogen bonding sites on the hydrophobic surface resulted in a higher adsorption capacity, but the hydrophobic interaction contributed to improving the adsorption rate. Therefore, the distribution of the hydrophilic microdomain and hydrophobic microdomain on MFMs can influence the adsorption capacity and the adsorption rate for BPA or its analogues. These consequences provide a novel insight for better understanding the adsorption behavior and mechanism on MFMs.

The advent of thermoplasmonic membrane distillation

Freshwater scarcity is a vital societal challenge related to climate change, population pressure, and agricultural and industrial demands. Therefore, sustainable desalination/purification of salty/contaminated water for human uses is particularly relevant. Membrane distillation is an emerging hybrid thermal-membrane technology with the potential to overcome the drawbacks of conventional desalination by a synergic exploitation of the water-energy nexus. Although membrane distillation is considered a green technology, efficient heat management remains a critical concern affecting the cost of the process and hindering its viability at large scale. A multidisciplinary approach that involves materials chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials and polymer science is required to solve this problem. The combination of solar energy with membrane distillation is considered a potentially feasible low-cost approach for providing high-quality freshwater with a low carbon footprint. In particular, recent discoveries about efficient light-to-heat conversion in nanomaterials have opened unprecedented perspectives for the implementation of sunlight-based renewable energy in membrane distillation. The integration of nanofillers enabling photothermal effects into membranes has been demonstrated to be able to significantly enhance the energy efficiency without impacting on economic costs. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview on the state of the art, the opportunities, open challenges and pitfalls of the emerging field of solar-driven membrane distillation. We also assess the peculiar physicochemical properties and synthesis scalability of photothermal materials, as well as the strategies for their integration into polymeric nanocomposite membranes enabling efficient light-to-heat conversion and freshwater.

Improving the measurement of total dissolved sulfide in natural waters: A new on-site flow injection analysis method

Total dissolved sulfide (TDS) plays multiple important roles in the aquatic environments. However, the determination of trace levels of TDS in natural waters is challenging because TDS is vulnerable to oxidation and volatilization. In this study, a fully automated flow injection analysis spectrophotometric system, incorporating a hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) and a long path length liquid waveguide capillary cell, was fabricated to facilitate the on-site measurement of trace TDS in natural waters. The HFMC was used for matrix separation and analyte preconcentration. The measurement was based on the reaction of sulfide and N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine in the presence of FeCl₃ under acidic conditions to yield methylene blue (MB). The proposed method was highly sensitive, with detection and quantification limits of 0.57 and 1.90 nmol L^-1, respectively. The linear working range was from 1.90 to 150 nmol L^-1, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9995. The repeatability, expressed as the relative standard deviation, was less than 0.86% (n = 15) and the recoveries varied from 76.2 ± 0.1% to 103.9 ± 0.6% (n = 3) for spiked samples. This method was applied to conduct a field analysis of TDS in a reservoir, giving results aligned with those obtained using a standard MB method. This work demonstrates that the new method for determining TDS was effective for both laboratory analysis and on-site measurement.

Controlled Thin Polydimethylsiloxane Membrane with Small and Large Micropores for Enhanced Attachment and Detachment of the Cell Sheet

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes can allow the precise control of well-defined micropore generation. A PDMS solution was mixed with a Rushton impeller to generate a large number of microbubbles. The mixed solution was spin-coated on silicon wafer to control the membrane thickness. The microbubbles caused the generation of a large number of small and large micropores in the PDMS membranes with decreased membrane thickness. The morphology of the thinner porous PDMS membrane induced higher values of roughness, Young’s modulus, contact angle, and air permeability. At day 7, the viability of cells on the porous PDMS membranes fabricated at the spin-coating speed of 5000 rpm was the highest (more than 98%) due to their internal networking structure and surface properties. These characteristics closely correlated with the increased formation of actin stress fibers and migration of keratinocyte cells, resulting in enhanced physical connection of actin stress fibers of neighboring cells throughout the discontinuous adherent junctions. The intact detachment of a cell sheet attached to a porous PDMS membrane was demonstrated. Therefore, PDMS has a great potential for enhancing the formation of cell sheets in regenerative medicine.

Construction of ultrasmooth PTFE membrane for preventing bacterial adhesion and cholestasis

Bacterial adhesion and bile sludge accumulation can increase the risk of complications such as stent restenosis after biliary stent implantation. Compared with active and passive antimicrobial surfaces, a significant advantage of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) is their recoverable anti-adhesive properties. According to the mechanism of SLIPSs and the application environments of the biliary system, a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) electrospun fibrous membrane-impregnated silicone-oil system was developed to construct an ultrasmooth surface. Experimental results indicated that a PTFE SLIPS with 350 cSt of silicone oil had an extremely small roll angle (< 5°) and a high slip rate (4.8 ± 0.1 mm/s) and maintained excellent sliding stability after 7 d of immersion in model bile system. Thus, it can inhibit the adhesion of proteins, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and bile sludge. Moreover, when human fibroblasts were cultured on the PTFE SLIPS, it exhibited good cytocompatibility. Therefore, the proposed ultrasmooth PTFE membranes provide a promising alternative for biliary system to prevent bacterial adhesion and bile sludge accumulation.

Recent Progress Regarding Materials and Structures of Triboelectric Nanogenerators for AR and VR

With the continuous advancement in technology, electronic products used in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have gradually entered the public eye. As a result, the power supplies of these electronic devices have attracted more attention from scientists. Compared to traditional power sources, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are gradually being used for energy harvesting in self-powered sensing technology such as wearable flexible electronics, including AR and VR devices due to their small size, high conversion efficiency, and low energy consumption. As a result, TENGs are the most popular power supplies for AR and VR products. This article first summarizes the working mode and basic theory of TENGs, then reviews the TENG modules used in AR and VR devices, and finally summarizes the material selection and design methods used for TENG preparation. The friction layer of the TENG can be made of a variety of materials such as polymers, metals, and inorganic materials, and among these, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are the most popular materials. To improve TENG performance, the friction layer material must be suitable. Therefore, for different application scenarios, the design methods of the TENG play an important role in its performance, and a reasonable selection of preparation materials and design methods can greatly improve the work efficiency of the TENG. Lastly, we summarize the current research status of nanogenerators, analyze and suggest future application fields, and summarize the main points of material selection.

Recent Progress in Protective Membranes Fabricated via Electrospinning: Advanced Materials, Biomimetic Structures, and Functional Applications

Electrospinning is a significant micro/nanofiber processing technology and has been rapidly developing in the past 2 decades. It has several applications, including advanced sensing, intelligent manufacturing, and high-efficiency catalysis. Here, multifunctional protective membranes fabricated via electrospinning in terms of novel material design, construction of novel structures, and various protection requirements in different environments are reviewed. To achieve excellent comprehensive properties, such as, high water vapor transmission, high hydrostatic pressure, optimal mechanical property, and air permeability, combinations of novel materials containing nondegradable/degradable materials and functional structures inspired by nature have been investigated for decades. Currently, research is mainly focused on conventional protective membranes with multifunctional properties, such as, anti-UV, antibacterial, and electromagnetic-shielding functions. However, important aspects, such as, the properties of electrospun monofilaments, development of "green electrospinning solutions" with high solid content, and approaches for enhancing adhesion between hydrophilic and hydrophobic layers are not considered. Based on this systematic review, the development of electrospinning for protective membranes is discussed, the existing gaps in research are discussed, and solutions for the development of technology are proposed. This review will assist in promoting the diversified development of protective membranes and is of great significance for fabricating advanced materials for intelligent protection.

High-performance photocatalytic membranes for water purification in relation to environmental and operational parameters

Growing technologies, increasing population and environmental pollution lead to severe contamination of water and require advanced water treatment technologies. These aspects lead to the need to purify water with advanced smart materials. This paper reviews the recent advances (during the last 5 years) in photocatalytic composite membranes used for water treatment. For this purpose, the authors have reviewed the main materials used in the development of (photocatalytic membranes) PMs, environmental and operational factors affecting the performance of photocatalytic membranes, and the latest developments and applications of PMs in water purifications. The composite photocatalytic membranes show good performance in the removal and degradation of pollutants from water.

Recent Progress in Microfiltration/Ultrafiltration Membranes for Separation of Oil and Water Emulsions

Oily wastewater has become one of the leading causes of environmental pollution. A massive quantity of oily wastewater is released from industries, oil spills, and routine activities, endangering the ecosystem's sustainability. Due to the enormous negative impact, researchers put strenuous efforts into developing a sustainable solution to treat oily wastewater. Microfiltration/ultrafiltration membranes are considered an efficient solution to treat oily wastewater due to their low cost, small footprint, facile operation, and high separation efficiencies. However, membranes severely fouled during the separation process due to oil's adsorption and cake layer formation, which shortens the membranes' life. This review has critically discussed the microfiltration/ultrafiltration membrane synthesizing methods and their emulsion's separation performance. In the end, key challenges and their possible solutions are highlighted to provide future direction to synthesize next-generation membranes.
