Abstract
Adsorption process plays an important role in the remediation of heavy metals (HMs) from wastewater. A laboratory trial was conducted to investigate effective parameters for improving the bio-adsorption removal of HMs. SEM, EDX, BET, and FTIR techniques were applied to characterize the calcined layer double hydroxide (Cal-LDH), pectin (PC), and Cal-LDH-PC composite prepared from Licorice pomace. The adsorption of zinc (Zn) cadmium, nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) onto the most efficient sorbent was investigated using RSM methodology with operational factors such as concentration, reaction time, sorbent dose, and pH. The results related to FTIR showed that Cal-LDH-PC had the highest number of functional groups. Based on the SEM results Cal-LDH had a low surface area (9.36 m2 g-1) and a small pore size (9.22 nm). After the modification process (Cal-LDH-PC), the values of surface area and pore size increased by 13-fold (120 m2 g-1) and 1.5-fold (18 nm), respectively. Cal-LDH had high adsorption performance, more cavities, stability, various functional groups, and excessive carbon and oxygen content, which make it efficient and powerful in removing HMs from wastewater. The optimal condition for achieving the removal efficiency (RE%) values of metals was determined to be 80.79 mg L-1, 100 min, 0.167 g L-1, and 9 for concentration, reaction time, sorbent dose, and pH, respectively. Maximum adsorption capacity and RE (%) were 300 mg g-1 and 99% for Zn. According to the results concentration had a major impact on RE% (except for Ni), while for Ni, adsorbent dose had the most significant impact. The present study introduced Cal-LDH-PC prepared from Licorice pomace as a capable, useful and economical sorbent for HMs removal from polluted environments. Taguchi's statistical method is distinguished as an economic method with easier interpretation, while the RSM approach is more accurate, and it can also check the interaction of parameters.

Abstract
Increasing world population, urbanization, and industrialization have led to an increase in demand in production and consumption, resulting in an increase in industrial solid wastes and pollutant levels in water. These two main consequences have become global problems. The high Si and Al content of solid wastes suggests that they can be used as raw materials for the synthesis of zeolites. In this context, when the literature studies conducted to obtain synthetic zeolites are evaluated, it is seen that hydrothermal synthesis method is generally used. In order to improve the performance of the hydrothermal synthesis method in terms of energy cost, synthesis time, and even product quality, additional methods such as alkaline fusion, ultrasonic effect, and microwave support have been developed. The zeolites synthesized by different techniques exhibit superior properties such as high surface area and well-defined pore sizes, thermal stability, high cation exchange capacity, high regeneration ability, and catalytic activity. Due to these specific properties, zeolites are recognized as one of the most effective methods for the removal of pollutants. The toxic properties of heavy metals and dyes in water and their carcinogenic effects in long-term exposure pose a serious risk to living organisms. Therefore, they should be treated at specified levels before discharge to the environment. In this review study, processes including different methods developed for the production of zeolites from industrial solid wastes were evaluated. Studies using synthetic zeolites for the removal of high levels of health and environmental risks such as heavy metals and dyes are reviewed. In addition, EPMA, SEM, EDX, FTIR, BET, AFM, and 29Si and 27Al NMR techniques, which are characterization methods of synthetic zeolites, are presented and the cation exchange capacity, thermodynamics of adsorption, effect of temperature, and pH are investigated. It is expected that energy consumption can be reduced by large-scale applications of alternative techniques developed for zeolite synthesis and their introduction into the industry. It is envisaged that zeolites synthesized by utilizing wastes will be effective in obtaining a green technology. The use of synthesized zeolites in a wide variety of applications, especially in environmental problems, holds great promise.

Abstract
Over the past decade, multilayered graphene oxide (GO) membranes have emerged as promising candidates for desalination applications. Despite their potential, a comprehensive understanding of separation mechanisms remains elusive due to the intricate morphology and structural arrangement of interlayer galleries. Moreover, a critical concern of multilayered GO membranes is their susceptibility to swelling within aqueous environments, which hinders their practical implementation. Therefore, this study introduces cation intercalation within GO laminates to elucidate the underlying factors governing swelling behavior and subsequently mitigate it. Moreover, this study performed nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations on the cation (Mg2+ or K+)-intercalated lamellar and nonlamellar GO membranes to understand the effect of the arrangement of GO sheets on the retention time of intercalated cations within GO layers, water permeance, and salt rejection mechanism in the reverse osmosis process using cation-intercalated GO membranes. Our results highlight that lamellar GO membranes exhibit higher water permeance, attributed to their well-defined interlayer gallery structure. On the other hand, nonlamellar GO membranes display superior salt rejection due to their complex interlayer gallery structure that impedes salt permeation. Moreover, the structural complexity of nonlamellar GO membranes contributes to greater stability by retention of the more intercalated cations for a longer time within the layers. Furthermore, it is observed that a higher percentage of Mg2+ cations remained inside the GO laminates as compared to K+ cations, hence resulting in the greater stability of the Mg2+-intercalated GO membrane in the aqueous environment.

Abstract
Improving the desalination performance of membranes is always in the spotlight of scientific research; however, Janus channels with polarized surface charge as nanofiltration membranes are still unexplored. In this work, using molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that Janus graphene oxide (GO) channels with appropriate geometry and surface charge can serve as highly efficient nanofiltration membranes. We observe that the water permeability of symmetric Janus GO channels is significantly superior to that of asymmetric channels without sacrificing much ion rejection, owing to weakened ion blockage and electrostatic effects. Furthermore, in symmetric Janus GO channels, the transport of water and ions is sensitive to the charge polarity of the channel inner surface, which is realized by tuning the ratio of cationic and anionic functionalization. Specifically, with the increase in cationic functionalization, the water flux decreases monotonously, while ion rejection displays an interesting maximum behavior that indicates desalination optimization. Moreover, the trade-off between water permeability and ion rejection suggests that the Janus GO channels have an excellent desalination potential and are highly tunable according to the specific water treatment requirements. Our work sheds light on the key role of channel geometry and charge polarity in the desalination performance of Janus GO channels, which paves the way for the design of novel desalination devices.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) membranes are known to have a complex morphology that depends on the degree of oxidation of the graphene flake and the membrane preparation technique. In this study, using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the mechanism of swelling of GO membranes exposed to different relative humidity (RH) values and show how this is intimately related to the graphene surface chemistry. We show that the structure of the GO membrane changes while the membrane adsorbs water from the environment and that graphene oxide flakes become charged as the membrane is loaded with water and swells. A detailed comparison between simulation and experimental adsorption data reveals that the flake surface charge drives the water adsorption mechanism at low RH when the membrane topology is still disordered and the internal pores are small and asymmetric. As the membrane is exposed to higher RH (80%), the flake acquires more surface charge as more oxide groups deprotonate, and the pores grow in size, yet maintain their disordered geometry. Only for very high relative humidity (98%) does the membrane undergo structural changes. At this level of humidity, the pores in the membrane become slit-like but the flake surface charge remains constant. Our results unveil a very complex mechanism of swelling and show that a single molecular model cannot fully capture the ever-changing chemistry and morphology of the membrane as it swells. Our computational procedure provides the first atomically resolved insight into the GO membrane structure of experimental samples.

Abstract
Membrane-based purification of therapeutic agents has recently attracted global attention as a promising replacement for conventional techniques like distillation and pervaporation. Despite the conduction of different investigations, development of more research about the operational feasibility of using polymeric membranes to separate the detrimental impurities of molecular entities is of great importance. The focus of this paper is to develop a numerical strategy based on multiple machine learning methods to predict the concentration distribution of solute through a membrane-based separation process. Two inputs are being analyzed in this study, specifically r and z. Furthermore, the single target output is C, and the number of data points exceeds 8000. To analyze and model the data for this study, we used the Adaboost (Adaptive Boosting) model over three different base learners (K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Linear Regression (LR), and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR)). In the process of hyper-parameter optimization for models, the BA optimization algorithm applied on the adaptive boosted models. Finally, Boosted KNN, Boosted LR, and Boosted GPR have scores of 0.9853, 0.8751, and 0.9793 in terms of R2 metric. Based on the recent fact and other analyses, boosted KNN model is introduced as the most appropriate model of this research. The error rates for this model are 2.073 × 101 and 1.06 × 10-2 in terms of MAE and MAPE metrics.

Abstract
As a basic building block of graphene-based materials, graphene oxide (GO) plays an important role in scientific research and industrial applications. At present, numerous methods have been employed to synthesize GO, there are still some issues that need to be solved, thus it is of importance to develop a green, safe and low-cost GO preparation method. Herein, a green, safe and fast method was designed to prepare GO, namely, graphite powder was firstly oxidized in a dilute sulfuric acid solution (H2SO4, 6 mol/L) with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 30 wt%) as oxidant, and then exfoliated to GO by ultrasonic treatment in water. In this process, H2O2 was the only oxidant, and no other oxidants were used, thus the explosive nature of GO preparation reaction in the conventional methods could be completely eliminated. This method has other advantages such as green, fast, low-cost and no Mn-based residues. The experimental results confirm that obtained GO with oxygen-containing groups has better adsorption property compared to the graphite powder. As adsorbent, GO can remove methylene blue (50 mg/L) and Cd2+ (56.2 mg/L) from water with removal capacity of 23.8 mg/g and 24.7 mg/g, respectively. It provides a green, fast and low-cost method to prepare GO for some applications such as adsorbent.
