A review of recent developments in the application of nanostructures for sperm cryopreservation

In the 1970s, sperm cryopreservation was presented as a unique route to fertility preservation. The ability to cryopreserve sperm from all species is challenging. The sperm cryopreservation process encompasses various cellular stresses such as increased osmotic pressure, ice crystal formation, and thermal shock, therefore decreasing the quality of sperm. The nanostructures due to their inherent features such as reactivity, high uptake, active surface area, and antioxidant activity, have contributed to modifying freezing protocols. In this review, the current state of the art with regards to emerging applications of nanotechnology in sperm cryopreservation are reviewed, some of the most promising advances are summarized, and the limitations and advantages are comprehensively discussed.

Molecular Pathways of Genistein Activity in Breast Cancer Cells

The most common malignancy in women is breast cancer. During the development of cancer, oncogenic transcription factors facilitate the overproduction of inflammatory cytokines and cell adhesion molecules. Antiapoptotic proteins are markedly upregulated in cancer cells, which promotes tumor development, metastasis, and cell survival. Promising findings have been found in studies on the cell cycle-mediated apoptosis pathway for medication development and treatment. Dietary phytoconstituents have been studied in great detail for their potential to prevent cancer by triggering the body's defense mechanisms. The underlying mechanisms of action may be clarified by considering the role of polyphenols in important cancer signaling pathways. Phenolic acids, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, lignans, lignins, naphthoquinones, anthraquinones, xanthones, and stilbenes are examples of natural chemicals that are being studied for potential anticancer drugs. These substances are also vital for signaling pathways. This review focuses on innovations in the study of polyphenol genistein's effects on breast cancer cells and presents integrated chemical biology methods to harness mechanisms of action for important therapeutic advances.

From nature to nanomedicine: bioengineered metallic nanoparticles bridge the gap for medical applications

The escalating global challenge of antimicrobial resistance demands innovative approaches. This review delves into the current status and future prospects of bioengineered metallic nanoparticles derived from natural sources as potent antimicrobial agents. The unique attributes of metallic nanoparticles and the abundance of natural resources have sparked a burgeoning field of research in combating microbial infections. A systematic review of the literature was conducted, encompassing a wide range of studies investigating the synthesis, characterization, and antimicrobial mechanisms of bioengineered metallic nanoparticles. Databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Springer, Taylor & Francis online and OpenAthen were extensively searched to compile a comprehensive overview of the topic. The synthesis methods, including green and sustainable approaches, were examined, as were the diverse biological sources used in nanoparticle fabrication. The amalgamation of metallic nanoparticles and natural products has yielded promising antimicrobial agents. Their multifaceted mechanisms, including membrane disruption, oxidative stress induction, and enzyme inhibition, render them effective against various pathogens, including drug-resistant strains. Moreover, the potential for targeted drug delivery systems using these nanoparticles has opened new avenues for personalized medicine. Bioengineered metallic nanoparticles derived from natural sources represent a dynamic frontier in the battle against microbial infections. The current status of research underscores their remarkable antimicrobial efficacy and multifaceted mechanisms of action. Future prospects are bright, with opportunities for scalability and cost-effectiveness through sustainable synthesis methods. However, addressing toxicity, regulatory hurdles, and environmental considerations remains crucial. In conclusion, this review highlights the evolving landscape of bioengineered metallic nanoparticles, offering valuable insights into their current status and their potential to revolutionize antimicrobial therapy in the future.

Fabrication of biodegradable and antibacterial films of chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone containing Eucalyptus citriodora extracts

The main objective of this work is to develop biodegradable active films through the combination of the extracts with different solvents sourced from Eucalyptus citriodora leaves, with films made of chitosan (Cs) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Chromatographic profiling investigations were carried out to examine the antibacterial characteristics of E. citriodora extracts before their direct incorporation into the polymer films. At this point, the potent antimicrobial properties of the phenol compounds and bioactive components demonstrated an antibacterial activity that was particularly noticeable at a hexane resolution. Different morphological characteristics were seen on films made from these solvent extracts, such as Cs/PVP-AE, Cs/PVP-EAE, and Cs/PVP-HE, when scanning electron microscopy was used. Numerous other outcomes of all the interactions between the extract particles and the film were shown by the pores defined by the Cs/PVP film's porous nature. The addition of the extracts, either alone or in combination, greatly enhanced the Cs/NC/PVP films' mechanical characteristics. It has also been shown that adding plant extracts greatly increased the antibacterial activity of these films. These findings reveal that Cs/PVP films loaded with extract may be utilized as more environmentally acceptable substitutes for possible food packaging application by increasing shelf life of food products.

Influence of Carboxymethyl Cellulose on the Green Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Using Gliricidia sepium and Petiveria alliacea Extracts: Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Effect Evaluation

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized and stabilized using ecological strategies: the extracts of the leaves of the plants Gliricidia sepium (GS) and Petiveria alliacea (PA) reduced the metallic Au ions to AuNPs. The AuNPs were analyzed as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for pyridoxine detection (vitamin B6). UV-vis spectroscopy was carried out to assess the stability of the AuNPs. As a result, absorption bands around 530 and 540 nm were obtained for AuNPs-PA and AuNPs-GS, respectively. Both cases associated it with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). In the final stage of the synthesis, to stabilize the AuNPs, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was added; however, LSPR bands do not exhibit bathochromic or hypsochromic shifts with the addition of CMC. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs show relatively spherical morphologies; the particle diameters were detected around 7.7 and 12.7 nm for AuNPs-PA and AuNPs-GS, respectively. The nanomaterials were evaluated as SERS substrates on pyridoxine, revealing an intensification in the vibrational mode centered at 688 cm-1 associated with the pyridinic ring. Complementarily, different density functional theory functionals were included to obtain molecular descriptors on the Aun-cluster-pyridoxine interaction to study the SERS behavior.

Antioxidant activity and efficacy of Garcinia kola (bitter kola) oil on pathogenic and alteration microorganisms of attiéké

Attiéké, the most widely consumed cassava product in Côte d'Ivoire, has a short shelf life. This is largely due to microbial contamination. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the antioxidant activity and effectiveness of Garcinia kola seed oil against pathogenic and spoilage strains of attiéké. This was possible through an extraction of Garcinia kola oil by maceration in hexane. The antimicrobial activity of the oil was assessed using an agar diffusion method. The antioxidant activity of Garcinia kola oil was assessed using the DiPhenyl Picryl Hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging test and the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) test. Garcinia kola oil showed significant antioxidant potential. A high percentage of DPPH radical inhibition was observed, with an IC50 of 2.57 mg/mL. Iron-reducing power was highest when the oil was used at a concentration of 100 %. Garcinia kola oil was able to inhibit the bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli at a concentration of 100, 50 and 25 % respectively from 22 ± 0.05 to 16 ± 0.00 mm and 20 ± 0.05 to 14 ± 0.08 mm and Salmonella typhimurium (12 ± 00 mm) at a concentration of 100 %. Candida albicans (20 ± 0.07 to 18 ± 0.01 mm), Aspergillus flavus (28 ± 1.41 to 16 ± 0.00 mm) and Aspergillus niger (21 ± 1.01 to 15 ± 0.02) were inhibited at concentrations ranging from 100 to 12.5 %. Bacillus cereus, on the other hand, was resistant to Garcinia kola oil. Based on the findings of this study, Garcinia kola seed oil could be used to extend the shelf life of attiéké.

GC-MS, quantum mechanics calculation and the antifungal activity of river red gum essential oil when applied to four natural textiles

The most important uses of old fabrics include clothing, mummification, and bookbinding. However, because they are predominantly constructed of natural materials, they are particularly susceptible to physical and chemical deterioration brought on by fungi. The treatments that are typically used to preserve old textiles focus on the use of synthetic fungicides, which have the potential to be dangerous for both human health and the environment. Essential oils (EOs), which are safe for the environment and have no negative effects on human health, have been widely advocated as an alternative to conventional antifungals. Four natural fabrics-linen, cotton, wool, and silk-were utilized in the current work. The extracted EO from leaves of river red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.) were prepared at 125, 250, and 500 µL/L. Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium culmorum and Aspergillus niger were inoculated separately into the treated four fabrics with the EO at concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 µL/L or the main compounds (spathulenol and eucalyptol) at the concentrations of 6, 12, 25, and 50 µL/L and were then compared to the un-treated samples. GC-MS was used to analyze the EO chemical composition, while visual observations and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) were used to study the fungal growth inhibition. Spathulenol (26.56%), eucalyptol (14.91%), and p-cymene (12.40%) were the principal chemical components found in E. camaldulensis EO by GC-MS. Spathulenol molecule displayed the highest electrostatic potential (ESP) compared with the other primary compound, as calculated by quantum mechanics. In the untreated textile samples, SEM analysis revealed substantial proliferation of hyphae from A. flavus, F. culmorum, and A. niger. The fungal growth was completely inhibited at a concentration of 500 µL/L from the EO. Both eucalyptol and spathulenol completely inhibited the formation of the fungal spores at a concentration of 50 µL/L, although eucalyptol was more effective than spathulenol across the board for all four textiles. The results support E. camaldulensis EO functionalized textiles as an effective active antifungal agent.

Productivity and Phytochemicals of Asclepias curassavica in Response to Compost and Silver Nanoparticles Application: HPLC Analysis and Antibacterial Activity of Extracts

The application of compost and metallic nanoparticles has a significant impact on the productivity and chemical composition of horticulture plants. In two subsequent growing seasons, 2020 and 2021, the productivity of Asclepias curassavica L. plants treated with various concentrations of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and compost was assessed. In the pot experiments, the soil was amended with 25% or 50% compost, and the plants were sprayed with 10, 20, and 30 mg/L of AgNPs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize AgNPs. The TEM measurements of AgNPs showed that the particles had spherical forms and ranged in size from roughly 5 to 16 nm. Leaf methanol extracts (LMEs) were prepared from the treated plants and assayed against the growth of two soft rot bacteria, Dickeya solani and Pectobacterium atrosepticum. The maximum plant height, diameter, number of branches/plant, total fresh weight (g), total dry weight (g), and leaf area (cm²) was recorded when levels of 25% compost + AgNPs 20 mg/L, 25% compost, or 50% + AgNPs 20 mg/L, 25% compost + AgNPs 30 mg/L or 50% compost + AgNPs 20 mg/L, 50% compost + AgNPs 20 mg/L, 50% compost + AgNPs 30 or 20 mg/L, and 25% compost + AgNPs 30 mg/L, respectively, were applied. The plants treated with 25% or 50% compost + 30 mg/L AgNPs showed a high chlorophyll content, while the plants treated with 50% compost + AgNPs 30 mg/L or 20 mg/L showed the highest extract percentages. The highest inhibition zones (IZs), 2.43 and 2.2 cm, against the growth of D. solani were observed in the LMEs (4000 mg/L) extracted from the plants treated with compost (v/v) + AgNPs (mg/L) at the levels of 50% + 30 and 25% + 30, respectively. The highest IZs, 2.76 and 2.73 cm, against the growth of P. atrosepticum were observed in the LMEs (4000 mg/L) extracted from the plants treated at the levels of 50% + 30 and 25% + 30, respectively. Several phenolic compounds such as syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, cinnamic acid, ellagic acid, caffeic acid, benzoic acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid, salicylic acid, pyrogallol, and catechol, as well as flavonoid compounds such as 7-hydroxyflavone, naringin, rutin, apigenin, quercetin, kaempferol, luteolin, hesperidin, catechin, and chrysoeriol, were identified in the LMEs as analyzed by HPLC with different concentrations according to the treatment of compost + AgNPs used for the plants. In conclusion, the specific criteria that were utilized to measure the growth of A. curassavica revealed the novelty of compost and AgNPs combination treatments, particularly at a concentration of 50% compost + AgNPs 30 mg/L or 20 mg/L, which is better for the growth and phytochemical production of A. curassavica in the field.

Nanofabrication synthesis and its role in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulant activities of AgNPs synthesized by Mangifera indica bark extract

The bio-based nanoparticles synthesis and assessment of their potential biomedical applications related research is rapidly emerging. The ability of an aqueous ethanolic bark extract of Mangifera indica to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as well as its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities were investigated in this study. Interestingly, the bark extract effectively synthesized the AgNPs, including an absorbance peak at 412 nm and sizes ranging from 56 to 89 nm. The Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed that the presence of most essential functional groups belongs to the most bioactive compounds. Synthesized AgNPs showed fine antibacterial activity against the Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) causing bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus at 50 μg mL^-1 concentrations. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of AgNPs against these pathogens were found as 12.5 ± 0.8 & 13 ± 0.6, 13.6 ± 0.5 & 14 ± 0.7, 11.5 ± 0.3 & 11.5 ± 0.4, 13 ± 0.8 & 13 ± 0.7, and 11.8 ± 0.4 & 12 ± 0.8 μg mL^-1 respectively. Interestingly, this AgNPs also possesses outstanding anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities as studied against the egg albumin denaturation (85%) inhibition and MCF 7 (Michigan Cancer Foundation-7: breast cancer cells) cell line (cytotoxicity: 80.1%) at 50 μg mL^-1 concentration. Similarly at 50 μg mL^-1 concentration showed 75% of DPPH radical scavenging potential. These activities were dose dependent, and the findings suggest that the M. indica bark aqueous ethanolic extract synthesized AgNPs can be used as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer agents after in-vivo testing.

Untargeted Metabolomics Analysis of the Orchid Species Oncidium sotoanum Reveals the Presence of Rare Bioactive C-Diglycosylated Chrysin Derivatives

Plants are valuable sources of secondary metabolites with pharmaceutical properties, but only a small proportion of plant life has been actively exploited for medicinal purposes to date. Underexplored plant species are therefore likely to contain novel bioactive compounds. In this study, we investigated the content of secondary metabolites in the flowers, leaves and pseudobulbs of the orchid Oncidium sotoanum using an untargeted metabolomics approach. We observed the strong accumulation of C-diglycosylated chrysin derivatives, which are rarely found in nature. Further characterization revealed evidence of antioxidant activity (FRAP and DPPH assays) and potential activity against neurodegenerative disorders (MAO-B inhibition assay) depending on the specific molecular structure of the metabolites. Natural product bioprospecting in underexplored plant species based on untargeted metabolomics can therefore help to identify novel chemical structures with diverse pharmaceutical properties.

Arctium lappa (Burdock): Insights from ethnopharmacology potential, chemical constituents, clinical studies, pharmacological utility and nanomedicine

Arctium lappa L. is a medicinal edible homologous plant, commonly known as burdock or bardana, which belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is widely distributed throughout Northern Asia, Europe, and North America and has been utilized for hundreds of years. The roots, fruits, seeds, and leaves of A. lappa have been extensively used in traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). A. lappa has attracted a great deal of attention due to its possession of highly recognized bioactive metabolites with significant therapeutic potential. Numerous pharmacological effects have been demonstrated in vitro and in vivo by A. lappa and its bioactive metabolites, including antimicrobial, anti-obesity, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-allergic, antiviral, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective activities. Additionally, A. lappa has demonstrated considerable clinical efficacies and valuable applications in nanomedicine. Collectively, this review covers the properties of A. lappa and its bioactive metabolites, ethnopharmacology aspects, pharmacological effects, clinical trials, and applications in the field of nanomedicine. Hence, a significant attention should be paid to clinical trials and industrial applications of this plant with particular emphasis, on drug discovery and nanotechnology.

Oil mediated green synthesis of nano silver in the presence of surfactants for catalytic and food preservation application

The present study details the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using clove oil as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Cationic, anionic, nonionic and zwitterionic surfactants were introduced to study the change in size, shape, and morphology of nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were characterized using different techniques. The nanoparticles had shown specific surface Plasmon resonance band with absorbance between 380 and 385 nm. The X-ray diffraction study revealed that the nanoparticles are composed of spherical cubic crystals with average size between 136 and 180 nm while Dynamic Laser scattering (DLS) studies revealed an effective diameter of 82 nm and polydispersity index of 0.005. Thermogravimetric analysis suggested that the particles are stable even at 600 °C. All the samples presented good antibacterial and antifungal efficacies against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia and Candida albicans and good catalytic activities for the degradation of fast green and Allura red dyes. Further, thin edible films of the nanoparticles were prepared using sodium alginate for food preservation. The films were coated on fruits and vegetables for extending their shelf life to cope with demand and supply gap.

Antifungal activity, mechanical properties, and accuracy of three-dimensionally printed denture base with microencapsulated phytochemicals on varying post-polymerization time

BACKGROUND

Studies on the antifungal activity, flexural strength, Vickers hardness, and intaglio surface trueness of three-dimensionally printed (3DP) denture bases with microencapsulated phytochemicals with respect to changes in post-polymerization time (PPT) are lacking.

METHODS

Specimens of various shapes and dimensions were fabricated with a 3DP denture base resin mixed with 5 wt% phytoncide-filled microcapsules. Each specimen was subjected to different PPT protocols of 5, 10, 20, and 30 min. Specimens without microcapsules with 5-min PPT were used as the negative control group. Cell colonies were counted to evaluate antifungal activity. Three-point bending and Vickers hardness tests were performed to measure the flexural strengths and hardness of the specimens. Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry was used to inspect the degree of conversion (DC). The intaglio surface trueness was measured using root-mean-square estimates calculated by superimposition analysis. A non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test or one-way analysis of variance was performed (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The specimens with microcapsules and 10-min PPT showed the highest antifungal activity among the tested groups. Compared with the positive control group (5-min PPT), the specimens with PPTs of 10 min or longer showed significantly higher mean flexural strength, higher DC, greater hardness, and better trueness (all, P < 0.05). Except for the difference in antifungal activity, no statistically significant differences were detected between the specimens subjected to 10-, 20-, and 30-min PPT.

CONCLUSION

The 3DP denture base filled with microencapsulated phytoncide showed different antifungal activity and physical properties on changing PPT. The 3DP denture base containing phytoncide-filled microcapsules at 5 wt% concentration and subjected to 10-min PPT exhibited sufficient antifungal activity as well as mechanical properties and accuracy within clinical acceptance.

Urtica dioica and Dodonaea viscosa leaf extracts as eco-friendly bioagents against Alternaria alternata isolate TAA-05 from tomato plant

One of the tomato’s acutely devastating diseases is Alternaria leaf spot, lowering worldwide tomato production. In this study, one fungal isolate was isolated from tomatoes and was assigned to Alternaria alternata TAA-05 upon morphological and molecular analysis of the ITS region and 18SrRNA, endoPG, Alt a1, and gapdh genes. Also, Urtica dioica and Dodonaea viscosa methanol leaf extracts (MLEs) were utilized as antifungal agents in vitro and compared to Ridomil, a reference chemical fungicide. The in vitro antifungal activity results revealed that Ridomil (2000 µg/mL) showed the highest fungal growth inhibition (FGI) against A. alternata (96.29%). Moderate activity was found against A. alternata by D. viscosa and U. dioica MLEs (2000 µg/mL), with an FGI value of 56.67 and 54.81%, respectively. The abundance of flavonoid and phenolic components were identified by HPLC analysis in the two plant extracts. The flavonoid compounds, including hesperidin, quercetin, and rutin were identified using HPLC in D. viscosa MLE with concentrations of 11.56, 10.04, and 5.14 µg/mL of extract and in U. dioica MLE with concentrations of 12.45, 9.21, and 5.23 µg/mL, respectively. α-Tocopherol and syringic acid, were also identified in D. viscosa MLE with concentrations of 26.13 and 13.69 µg/mL, and in U. dioica MLE, with values of 21.12 and 18.33 µg/mL, respectively. Finally, the bioactivity of plant extracts suggests that they play a crucial role as antifungal agents against A. alternata. Some phenolic chemicals, including coumaric acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and α-tocopherol, have shown that they may be utilized as environmentally friendly fungicidal compounds.

Inhibition of Bacterial Adhesion and Biofilm Formation by Seed-Derived Ethanol Extracts from Persea americana Mill

The increase in antibiotic resistance demands innovative strategies to combat microorganisms. The current study evaluated the antibacterial and antivirulence effects of ethanol extracts from Persea americana seeds obtained by the Soxhlet (SE) and maceration (MaE) methods. The UHPLC-DAD-QTOF analysis showed mainly the presence of polyphenols and neolignan. Ethanol extracts were not cytotoxic to mammalian cells (CC50 > 500 µg/mL) and displayed a moderate antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (IC50 = 87 and 187 µg/mL) and Staphylococcus aureus (IC50 = 144 and 159 µg/mL). Interestingly, no antibacterial activity was found against Escherichia coli. SE and MaE extracts were also able to significantly reduce the bacterial adhesion to A549 lung epithelial cells. Additionally, both extracts inhibited the biofilm growth at 24 h and facilitated the release of internal cell components in P. aeruginosa, which might be associated with cell membrane destabilization. Real-time PCR and agarose electrophoresis gel analysis indicated that avocado seed ethanol extracts (64 µg/mL) downregulated virulence-related factors such as mexT and lasA genes. Our results support the potential of bioproducts from P. americana seeds as anti-adhesive and anti-biofilm agents.

Photosynthetic Pigments and Biochemical Response of Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) to Plant-Derived Extracts, Microbial, and Potassium Silicate as Biostimulants Under Greenhouse Conditions

There are many technological innovations in the field of agriculture to improve the sustainability of farmed products by reducing the chemicals used. Uses of biostimulants such as plant extracts or microorganisms are a promising process that increases plant growth and the efficient use of available soil resources. To determine the effects of some biostimulants' treatments on the photosynthetic pigments and biochemicals composition of zucchini plants, two experiments were conducted in 2019 and 2020 under greenhouse conditions. In this work, the effects of beneficial microbes (Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens), as well as three extracts from Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaf extract (LE), Citrus sinensis LE, and Ficus benghalensis fruit extract (FE) with potassium silicate (K₂SiO₃) on productivity and biochemical composition of zucchini fruits, were assessed as biostimulants. The results showed that E. camaldulensis LE (4,000 mg/L) + K₂SiO₃ (500 mg/L) and T. viride (10⁶ spore/ml) + K₂SiO₃ (500 mg/L) gave the highest significance yield of zucchini fruits. Furthermore, the total reading response of chlorophylls and carotenoids was significantly affected by biostimulants' treatments. The combination of K₂SiO₃ with E. camaldulensis LE increased the DPPH scavenging activity and the total phenolic content of zucchini fruits, in both experiments. However, the spraying with K₂SiO₃ did not observe any effects on the total flavonoid content of zucchini fruits. Several phenolic compounds were identified via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) from the methanol extracts of zucchini fruits such as syringic acid, eugenol, caffeic acid, pyrogallol, gallic acid, ascorbic acid, ferulic acid, α-tocopherol, and ellagic acid. The main elemental content (C and O) analyzed via energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) of leaves was affected by the application of biostimulants. The success of this work could lead to the development of cheap and easily available safe biostimulants for enhancing the productivity and biochemical of zucchini plants.

Investigation of ellagic acid rich-berry extracts directed silver nanoparticles synthesis and their antimicrobial properties with potential mechanisms towards Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans

The essential goals of this present study are to elucidate the formation mechanism of ellagic acid rich-blackberry, BBE, (Rubus fruticosus L.) and raspberry, RBE, (Rubus idaeus L.) extracts directed silver nanoparticles and to investigate thier antimicrobial properties towards model dental pathogens E. faecalis and C. albicans compared to BBE, RBE, NaOCl, CHX and EDTA. Both %5 w/w of BBE and RBE reacted with 5 mM Ag ⁺ ions at room temperature (25 °C) under mild-stirring, the formation of BBE and RBE directed b@Ag NP and r@Ag NP was monitored over time by using an Uv-vis spectrophotometer. Both b@Ag and r@Ag NPs were also complementarily characterized with SEM and FT-IR. In terms of the antimicrobial studies, b@Ag NP, r@Ag NP, %5 BBE and RBE, 5 mM AgNO₃, %5 NaOCl, %1,5 CHX and %15 EDTA were separately incubated with E. faecalis and C. albicans suspensions. The results were evaluated with student t-test using GraphPad Prism 8.0.1 statistical software (P < 0.05). While formation of b@Ag NP was confirmed with characteristic absorbance at ~435 nm in 20 min (min) of incubation, r@Ag NP did not give absorbance till 80 min owing to concentration of ellagic acid acted as a reducing and stabilizng agent for formation of the Ag NPs. Intrestingly, 50 ppm r@Ag NP inactivated ∼89% and ∼99% of E. faecalis and C. albicans cell, respectively, ∼25% and ∼40% cell inactivations for E. faecalis and C. albicans were observed respectively with 50 ppm b@Ag NP. We showed that 50 ppm r@Ag NP has effective antimicrobial property as much as mostly used %5 NaOCl and %1,5 CHX solutions.

An Overview of the Beneficial Role of Antioxidants in the Treatment of Nanoparticle-Induced Toxicities

Nanoparticles (NPs) are used in many products and materials for humans such as electronics, in medicine for drug delivery, as biosensors, in biotechnology, and in agriculture, as ingredients in cosmetics and food supplements. Besides that, NPs may display potentially hazardous properties on human health and the environment as a consequence of their abundant use in life nowadays. Hence, there is increased interest of researchers to provide possible therapeutic agents or dietary supplements for the amelioration of NP-induced toxicity. This review summarizes the new findings in the research of the use of antioxidants as supplements for the prevention and alleviation of harmful effects caused by exposure of organisms to NPs. Also, mechanisms involved in the formation of NP-induced oxidative stress and protective mechanisms using different antioxidant substances have also been elaborated. This review also highlights the potential of naturally occurring antioxidants for the enhancement of the antioxidant defense systems in the prevention and mitigation of organism damage caused by NP-induced oxidative stress. Based on the presented results of the most recent studies, it may be concluded that the role of antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of nanoparticle-induced toxicity is unimpeachable. This is particularly important in terms of oxidative stress suppression.

Natural Plant Extracts and Microbial Antagonists to Control Fungal Pathogens and Improve the Productivity of Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) In Vitro and in Greenhouse

Background: Natural plant extracts and microbial antagonists have the potential for use in increasing the fungal resistance and productivity of horticulture plants. Methods: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of both natural plant extracts and microbial antagonists as a biotical control of some fungal pathogens, i.e., Fusarium ssp., Exserohilum ssp. and Nigrospora ssp., along with improving the growth and productivity performance of zucchini under greenhouse conditions. Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaf extract (LE), Citrus sinensis LE, Ficus benghalensis fruit extract (FE), and two microbial antagonists Pseudomonas fluorescens (accession no. MW647093) and Trichoderma viride (accession no. MW647090) were tested under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Through morphological characteristics and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, Fusarium solani (accession no. MW947256), F. oxysporum (accession no. MW947254), Exserohilum rostratum (accession no. MW947255), and Nigrospora lacticolonia (accession no. MW947253) were identified. HPLC analysis was used for the identification of phenolic compounds (PCs) and flavonoid compounds (FCs) in the extracts. Results: The highest inhibition percentage of fungal growth (IPFG) against F. oxysporum was obtained with P. fluorescens, T. viride, and E. camaldulensis LE (4000 mg/L); F. solani with P. fluorescens, T. viride, and C. sinensis LE (4000 mg/L); Exserohilum rostratum with P. fluorescens, Ficus benghalensis FE (4000 mg/L) and E. camaldulensis LE (4000 mg/L), and N. lacticolonia with P. fluorescens. Using HPLC analysis, the abundant PCs in E. camaldulensis LE were pyrogallol, and caffeic acid, those in C. sinensis LE were syringic acid and ferulic acid, and those in F. benghalensis FE were gallic acid and syringic acid. In addition, the abundant FCs in E. camaldulensis LE were kaempferol, and naringin, those in C. sinensis LE were hesperidin and quercetin, and those in F. benghalensis FE were kaempferol and quercetin. Under greenhouse experiments, T. viride and E. camaldulensis LE (4000 mg/L) followed by P. fluorescens + T. viride treatments gave the best results of zucchini plants in terms of leaf area, fruits number per plant, yield per plant, and total yield (marketable and non-marketable). Conclusions: Plant extracts and bioagents can be used to control some zucchini fungal pathogens and increase the productivity performance of zucchini plants.

Moringa oleifera seeds-removed ripened pods as alternative for papersheet production: antimicrobial activity and their phytoconstituents profile using HPLC

In the present study, and for the waste valorization, Moringa oleifera seeds-removed ripened pods (SRRP) were used for papersheet production and for the extraction of bioactive compounds. Fibers were characterized by SEM–EDX patterns, while the phytoconstituents in ethanol extract was analyzed by HPLC. The inhibition percentage of fungal mycelial growth (IFMG) of the treated Melia azedarach wood with M. oleifera SRRP extract at the concentrations of 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 µg/mL against the growth of Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium culmorum was calculated and compared with fluconazole (25 µg). The produced papersheet was treated with the ethanol extract (4000, 2000, and 1000 µg/mL) and assayed for its antibacterial activity against Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Erwinia amylovora, and Pectobacterium atrosepticum by measuring the inhibition zones and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). According to chemical analysis of M. oleifera SRRP, benzene:alcohol extractives, holocellulose, lignin, and ash contents were 7.56, 64.94, 25.66 and 1.53%, respectively, while for the produced unbleached pulp, the screen pulp yield and the Kappa number were 39% and 25, respectively. The produced papersheet showed tensile index, tear index, burst index, and double fold number values of 58.8 N m/g, 3.38 mN m²/g, 3.86 kPa m²/g, and 10.66, respectively. SEM examination showed that the average fiber diameter was 16.39 µm, and the mass average of for elemental composition of C and O by EDX were, 44.21%, and 55.79%, respectively. The main phytoconstituents in the extract (mg/100 g extract) by HPLC were vanillic acid (5053.49), benzoic acid (262.98), naringenin (133.02), chlorogenic acid (66.16), and myricetin (56.27). After 14 days of incubation, M. oleifera SRRP extract-wood treated showed good IFMG against R. solani (36.88%) and F. culmorum (51.66%) compared to fluconazole, where it observed 42.96% and 53.70%, respectively. Moderate to significant antibacterial activity was found, where the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were 500, 650, and 250 µg/mL against the growth of A. tumefaciens, E. amylovora, and P. atrosepticum respectively, which were lower than the positive control used (Tobramycin 10 µg/disc). In conclusion, M. oleifera SRRP showed promising properties as a raw material for pulp and paper production as well as for the extraction of bioactive compounds.

Insecticidal Activity of Lemongrass Essential Oil as an Eco-Friendly Agent against the Black Cutworm Agrotis ipsilon (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract

Background: The destructive insect pest Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a polyphagous species targeting many economically important plants. The extensive and arbitrary use of insecticides has resulted in the build-up of insecticide resistance and pesticide residues accumulating in food. Therefore, it is becoming evident that alternative pest management tools are needed to reduce risks to humans, the environment, and non-target organisms, and at the same time, they should be used in field application at the lowest cost. Methods: In view of this objective, the present study demonstrates the toxicity of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf) essential oil (EO), against the black cutworm A. ipsilon under controlled laboratory conditions in terms of measuring the activity of peroxidase and detoxification enzymes. The chemical components of the EO were analyzed using GC–MS. Results: The results show that after 96 h post treatment, the LC₁₅ and LC₅₀ values were 427.67 and 2623.06 mg/L, respectively, of C. citratus EO on second-instar larvae of A. ipsilon. A slight significance in elongation of the larval duration with LC₁₅ and LC₅₀ value was found with control. By GC–MS analysis, the main compounds identified in the EO were α-citral and β-citral with percentages of 35.91%, and 35%, respectively. The oxidative stress indicates a significant increase in CAT and lipid peroxidase enzyme activity after 96 h post treatment at the LC₁₅ and LC₅₀. Conversely, the detoxification enzyme activity shows an inhibition of CarE and GST enzymes of larvae exposed to LC₁₅ and LC₅₀ values in response to C. citratus EO. Conclusions: The present data show that lemongrass EO has insecticidal activity against the black cutworm, A. ipsilon.
